BURLINGTON HIGH SCHOOL VALEDICTORIAN
Memories to last a lifetime
Don’t be afraid to try new things
Ethan Safar is the Burlington High School Class of 2021 salutatorian. My fondest memories of high school divide into three separate categories. The first category includes all my favorite sports memories such as the Friday night lights football games and the playoff games for basketball. The next category encompasses the memories that were made through extracurriculars like FBLA state and the DRIVEN leadership program. Finally, the simplest yet some of the best memories involve all the day-today magic made within the classroom. My favorite class in high school was AP economics taught by Mr. Savaglia. The overall material of the class along with Mr. Savaglia’s personal touch made the class extremely enjoyable to me. The class that most surprised me was my junior year British Literature class taught by Ms. Jablonski. I didn’t think I would enjoy a class on the particular subject but I did. The most challenging aspect of my studies was transitioning to virtual learning and more independent modes of learning. I think the pandemic forced me to become more organized and taught me how to plan independently. I was the president of Burlington’s Future Business Leaders of America chapter. I was team captain of the football and basketball teams, and I ran track and field for numerous years. I was also a member of FFA, Academic Decathlon, DRIVEN, the National Honor society, and Best Buddies. My junior year I tore the anterior cruciate ligament in my knee and
Ethan Safar
underwent knee surgery. Initially, doctors told me that I wouldn’t be back in time for my senior football season. However, after months of rehab, I returned for the football season and was named first team All-Conference along with Academic All-State. I’m particularly proud of how I responded to adversity. After graduating high school, I will be attending Boston College where I will be studying finance and may potentially pursue a double major in another subject. My advice is short and sweet – Don’t pass up on opportunities presented to you and enjoy every moment of high school.
Cecelia Donegan is the Burlington High School Class of 2021 valedictorian. My best memories of high school are those spent with my classmates. Whether it be football games, interacting in class, or homecoming and prom, I loved being surrounded by my peers. I honestly enjoyed a variety of subjects – AP psychology and anatomy were by far my favorite, hence why I decided to double major in psychology and nursing next year. Mr. Everson taught anatomy, and was a constant inspiration, who showed me that long-lasting knowledge is best acquired through active, hands-on learning. The most challenging aspect was probably trying to balance school, work, and extracurriculars. I overcame this through planning out my time and communicating with my teachers. I was involved in a variety of activities. I was on the girls tennis team for all four years, and on varsity for three. I also was a part of DRIVEN, a community volunteer based program, along with National Honors Society. Some other activities I tried out throughout my high school career included forensics, student government, and Key Club. I am attending the University of Wisconsin-Madison next year. As of now, I am majoring in nursing and psychology in hopes of becoming a nurse practitioner. Although I love the medical field and would be proud to become a healthcare professional, I would truly just be happy to pursue any career in which I have the opportunity to help others and better their lives.
Cecelia Donegan
My advice for the incoming freshmen is to live in the moment. When you are a senior and looking back on those four years of high school, you are going to remember the friends you made, the laughs you had, and the teachers and peers that had an impact on you. School and grades are important, but in 10 years you won’t remember that you got that one A- or turned in a paper late. What you will remember are the clubs, the classes, the experiences that helped you grow and become the person you are now. So do not be afraid to try new things, join a sport or club that you may have never considered before, get to know your classmates, and just enjoy being in high school when you are in it.

Getting involved makes all the difference
Hard work and dedication pays off
Samantha Seib is the Catholic Central High School Class of 2021 salutatorian My best memories of high school were winning State my sophomore and senior years for volleyball and going to Kwik Trip before each home game with teammates. I especially enjoyed AP biology and honors anatomy and physiology as well as AP psychology because the teachers were invested in the classes and made the material easy to follow while still holding students to a high standard. The most challenging aspect of my studies is balancing school, work, and sports. I overcame the challenges by time management and finding the right balance
of what works best for me. I was involved in varsity volleyball, varsity soccer, student council, student ambassadors, National Honor Society and Key Club. I am proud of my success at balancing high school and club sports, a job, and academics all at the same time. I plan on attending Hope College in Holland, Michigan where I will also be playing volleyball. I am going to study biology and want to pursue a career in veterinary medicine. My advice is to get involved in as many activities as possible and take advantage of the time you have because high school goes by really fast.
Samantha Seib
Cara Marjorie Krien is the Catholic Central High School Class of 2021 valedictorian. Some of my best high school memories come from after volleyball games, when a big group of players and students would go get food, usually at Culver’s, and celebrate our win together. Another good memory for me was winning state volleyball this last year, after a crazy season full of new challenges. My top two favorite classes of high school are undoubtedly anatomy and physiology and AP psychology. I found the material covered in both fascinating, and I actually found myself looking forward to both classes this year. Part of the reason I enjoyed both classes so much was because they were taught by the two teachers that have inspired me the most. Both teachers put so much time and effort into their classes daily and genuinely want to see each of their students succeed. The most challenging aspect of my studies was adapting to online learning. Between online AP tests and ending junior year virtually, I had to figure out how to continue to be productive and keep my grades up without the typical structure of school. In high school, I was involved in both varsity volleyball and soccer. I was also a member of Student Council, National Honor Society, Key Club, and student ambassadors. This past year, I had the privilege of serving as Student Council president, NHS co-vice-president, and Key Club treasurer. The achievement I am most proud of is winning valedictorian. It was a
Cara Marjorie Krien culmination of all of my academic efforts throughout high school – the late nights, early mornings and all of the stressful hours in between. I am also proud of being selected as an honorable mention for the Metro Classic Conference Girls’ Volleyball AllConference Team this past season. My plan is to attend Villanova University and major in biology with a psychology minor, with the ultimate goal of becoming a pediatrician. My advice to freshmen is simple – get involved. Whether it’s sports, clubs, theater, or anything else, just find an activity to be a part of.
