HOW TO FIND THE RIGHT

wedding vendors

Weddings are a careful balance of many elements that culminate on one special day. Making all of the components of a wedding come together seamlessly requires a well-organized bride and groom and the cooperation of professional wedding vendors who understand their unique roles. Vendors, including florists, transportation companies, musicians, and dressmakers are essential to a successful wedding. Competent wedding vendors will remove much of the worry and work from a couple’s shoulders. But not every couple ends up with topnotch wedding vendors. Research, planning and verifying references are some ways to ensure your vendors make your wedding day that much more enjoyable.

Seek recommendations from trusted friends and family members Talk to friends and family members whose insight you value about which wedding vendors they used. If you attend a wedding or another party and find the flowers or the music particularly well done, ask for the name of the florist or band. Word-of-mouth advertisement is a great way to find quality-wedding vendors who will help make your dream wedding a reality. Consult with a wedding planner If budget allows, work with a wedding planner. He or she will have an extensive list of wedding vendors you can contact. A wedding planner wants the job to get done right and efficiently, and many wedding planners have already vetted and verified certain vendors as quality workers. Always ask for references and don’t ignore them Busy wedding vendors should provide you with a list of names of satisfied customers. Talk with couples who used the vendors’ services in the past and ask the questions that are most important to your decisionmaking process. Unbiased feedback also may be available through online review sites, but direct contact with references may make you feel more comfortable. If a vendor fails to provide references, this should raise suspicions about the person’s reliability. Deposits should be a fraction of the total price Avoid wedding vendors who insist on d see VENDORS on page 6 BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2015

d VENDORS from page 5

hefty deposits. A deposit is a good-faith agreement to hold the date of the wedding, and it should be a small percentage of the overall cost of the services. Do not pay balances too far in advance Many wedding vendors require the balance be paid on the day of the wedding or shortly before. Good vendors realize couples will not want to pay the tally until they have received the products or services they signed up for. A photographer may ask for the final payment when albums are delivered. The exception may be a caterer or reception site that needs the funds to order food and beverages a few weeks in advance. Paying off a vendor too early means you run the risk of that vendor having your money and then not coming through on the wedding day. It’s difficult to track down a person for a refund, plus you’re left with finding a replacement at the last minute. Contracts are your friends Every agreement should be in writing. You have a better chance of fighting for a refund or restitution in court when you have a contract in writing. Consider wedding insurance Even the best-laid plans can go awry on a wedding day. Anything from freak weather events to illness to vendor absences can wreak havoc. The Better Business Bureau advises purchasing wedding insurance to protect yourself when weddings are especially costly. Such insurance may cover vendors who fail to show up, cancellations, inclement weather, military deployment, medical emergencies, and travel delays. With wedding insurance, you won’t lose money if plans change. A basic insurance policy that covers loss of photos, videos, attire, presents, rings, and deposits usually costs between $155 and $550, depending on the amount of coverage you want. (METRO CREATIVE)

Shabby chic Three secrets to creating the wedding of your dreams

Wedding trends come and go, driven by many cultural influences, but few are as enduring and romantic as shabby chic/ shabby glam. With its perfect combination of elegance and softness, bright sparkles and gentle hues, a shabby chic wedding complements the individuality and beauty of brides of every age and walk of life. And, thanks to many rental stores increasing their inventory of shabby chic items, it’s also one of the easiest and most fun wedding themes to create. Vintage wedding gowns, repurposed items and a wide inventory of thematic rental items can all work together to create a shabby chic wedding that is unique, memorable and affordable. You can visit RentalHQ.com to find your local American Rental Association member store that will help you with your

individual needs. To create a wedding theme that is the perfect marriage of shabby and glam follow these three simple steps: Flowers and lace are the perfect marriage Lace isn’t just for your wedding gown and flowers aren’t just for your bouquet. Touches of lace added throughout the ceremony and reception underscore the air of nostalgic elegance that’s essential to shabby chic. This can be as easy as adding lace touches to wedding invitations or using pieces of lace as placemats or coasters on reception tables. Or, it can be as grand as a lace tent liner that evokes a romantic, bygone era. Florals are key to creating a shabby chic look. Whether the bride and groom stand beneath a bower of pastel blooms

while exchanging vows, or floral accents throughout the bride’s couture, flowers and floral patterns lend romance and grace to every aspect of a shabby chic wedding. Light the way Light plays an important role in any shabby chic themed event. For weddings, vintage-looking chandeliers, candelabras and hurricane lamps act both as decorative items and sources of romantic light. It’s easy to add thematic lighting to any wedding, even if your reception will be in an ordinary hall or tent. Rental companies offer an array of lighting options that can be temporarily outfitted to any venue. Adorn tables with classic silver candelabra or add a d see SHABBY CHIC on page 8 BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2015

stunning crystal chandelier to an outdoor tent. You can find a variety of lighting options on RentalHQ. com. Many rental stores have increased their inventory of shabby chic decor items to meet brides’ demands, so renting can give you access to greater variety. Plus, you’ll reap the cost savings of renting versus buying. Layers of texture The pleasing union of diverse colors and textures is at the heart of a shabby chic wedding. Soft colors are the perfect foil for sparkles, and distressed wood complements the beauty of aged metals like silver and pewter. All these elements come together to evoke the grace and comfort of bygone times. Look for creative ways to harmoniously incorporate these touches into your wedding. For example, display your wedding cake, adorned with real flowers, atop a rustic wooden table. Decorate an antique metal birdcage with lace and ribbon and use it as a holder where reception guests can deposit cards for the bride and groom. Add petite crystal and pearl accents to bouquets and centerpieces. For a rustic food table, rent wooden barrels, top with an aged wooden plank, and present food on vintage serving plates. Finally, look for inspiration online. Resources like Pinterest, Etsy and TheKnot yield a wealth of ideas, and you can browse photos of other weddings and bridal creations to find the perfect look for your shabby chic wedding. (BPT)

The perfect fit

Finding the right look for the wedding dress is crucial Few wardrobe decisions are scrutinized as much as a bride-to-be’s choice of wedding gown. Finding the perfect gown that flatters the future bride’s figure while stunning her guests and soon-to-be husband is a labor of love for many brides. The Bridal Association of America estimates a bride-to-be will spend between $1,500 and $2,000 total on her gown, veil and accessories. Brides often spend months, if not years, shopping for the right gown. Finding the right gown means having an understanding of what silhouettes are available and what flatters certain body types. After all, you want to look like the best version of yourself when getting married. Here is a look of some of the common types of gown silhouettes and why choosing this shape might be right for you.

Ballgown

A ballgown dress is truly a classic style, evoking images of fairy tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt – typically poofed-up by crinoline – will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ballgown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures.

A-line

Another silhouette very forgiving or appropriate for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses should be the goto style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips to form the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favorite among brides.

Trumpet

Women who prefer something a little more form-fitting may select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted through the body and then the gown flares out at midthigh level. Women with taught stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to select something else.

Mermaid

A bit more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown.

Modified A-line

A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much. But it does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures.

Tea length

Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor can opt for a tea length dress, on which the skirt generally falls

between the ankle and the knee.

Sheath

Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success. Although a bride may have a wedding gown style in mind, it is a good idea to try on a number of different silhouettes to find the one that is most flattering. Bridal salon employees are usually well-versed in matching body type to a gown and can prove invaluable when selecting a dress. (METRO CREATIVE)

Make your ‘I DO’ last forever In between the guest list, the flowers and the perfect three-tier cake, it can be hard to find time to shop for your wedding rings. However, it is important to remember that most of the wedding details are fleeting and gone after a few hours of enjoyment, while your rings are enjoyed forever. Jewelry and style expert Michael O’Connor has a few tips that are sure to help you find matrimonial bliss when it comes to ring selection: Create a budget There are many details to consider when planning a wedding that can quickly drain your budget. It is important to set aside money for a lifelong symbol like your wedding bands. Not sure how much to budget? Consider that in 2006, couples spent an average of $2,079 on wedding bands, according to the CN American Wedding Study. And since the age-old rule for purchasing an engagement ring is to spend two months salary, plan to spend one month’s salary for the two wedding bands. Check out the “Budget

Calculator” at www.TheKnot.com. Shop together It is a good idea to shop for rings together. In fact, 80 percent of couples do, which isn’t a surprise since your rings, which don’t have to match, should reflect your personal styles and tastes. Plan ahead Don’t wait until the last minute to go shopping for your wedding bands, they’re simply too important. Plan to start shopping for your rings six months prior to your “I do’s.” Invest in quality Because you want your ring to last a lifetime, it is important to put thought into the quality of metal you choose. Platinum 950 is the most durable precious metal and will last a lifetime. It’s 30 times more rare than gold, and for wedding bands set with diamonds, its natural whiteness will ensure the diamonds sparkle and stay secure. Responsibilities vary

FOR WEDDING PARTY PARTICIPANTS

When asked to play a role in the wedding of a friend or family member, most people are honored and willing to do whatever it takes. That willingness to be helpful is often a blessing, as wedding party participants each have their own unique responsibilities. Maid of honor and best man The maid of honor and best man are counterparts in the wedding. The bride and groom’s right hand woman and man, respectively, the maid of honor and best man are often siblings or very close friends of the bride or groom. Though their responsibilities are similar, the maid of honor and best man don’t have completely identical roles. The maid of honor might have the most responsibilities of anyone aside from the bride and groom. The maid of honor will help the bride shop for her dress and must also plan the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. The maid of honor’s duties also extend to the wedding day itself, when she will be expected to help the bride get dressed and toast the new bride at the reception that night. The best man’s role includes organizing the bachelor party and toasting the groom at the reception. The best man also plays a logistical role, organizing the newlyweds’

transportation to the airport the morning after the wedding as well as organizing the groomsmen’s gift to the couple.

The ring bearer is a boy and carries a pillow with the rings sewn on it during the wedding procession.

Bridesmaids and groomsmen The role of the bridesmaids and groomsmen are similar. Bridesmaids and groomsmen are often the siblings or close friends of the bride and groom, and they accompany each other down the aisle during the wedding procession. Typically, the role of bridesmaid and groomsmen is to offer any assistance in making the ceremony go smoothly. Groomsmen may act as ushers, while bridesmaids might help address wedding invitations and choose vendors for the ceremony and reception. How involved the bridesmaids and groomsmen become is often contingent on how close they live to the bride and groom and how much help is needed the day of the ceremony.

Parents The bride and groom’s parents play the role of hosts. The tradition of the bride’s parents paying for the wedding entirely by themselves has largely fallen by the wayside thanks to the escalating costs of throwing a wedding. However, if the bride’s parents are footing the bill, then they will typically act as hosts of the wedding. In that instance, the groom’s parents will host the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. During the ceremony, the bride is most often walked down the aisle by her father, though some brides choose to have both parents included in the walk down the aisle. The groom’s parents will often walk down the aisle ahead of the procession and take their seats. The parents may also play a role in the months leading up to the wedding. For instance, the mother of the bride might help plan the bridal shower, while the father of the groom might help plan any activities, such as a golf outing, for the groomsmen and additional friends of the groom a day or two before the wedding.

Flower girl and ring bearer The flower girl and the ring bearer are typically very young members of the family, such as very young siblings or a niece or nephew of the bride or groom. The flower girl will carry a basket of flowers during the wedding procession, often tossing flower petals on the ground to signify the bride’s entrance.

Simple solutions to save on your wedding C

ouples in the midst of planning a wedding often find themselves overwhelmed by the cost of such a meaningful yet expensive undertaking. The average wedding is as expensive as a new car or a down payment on a new house, so it’s no surprise many couples experience sticker shock when they first begin to negotiate with vendors. But as shocking as the cost of saying “I do” in front of family and friends can be, there are some tried-and-true ways to drastically reduce that cost without making the big day any less special.

Guests Many couples save the most money by reducing the number of

people they invite to their wedding. Couples who come from large families may not be able to cut family members from their guest lists without causing a significant stir, so such men and women can look for other areas to trim. Professional colleagues and old acquaintances who you no longer keep in touch with are unlikely to be offended if they don’t make the cut, and removing them from the guest list can save couples substantial amounts of money.

Venue Perhaps no element of wedding planning is more open to

negotiation than the venue where the reception will take place. Many couples now choose venues that can host both the wedding d see SIMPLE SOLUTIONS on page 14

How to throw a successful

outdoor wedding

Outdoor weddings are romantic when done right, and a growing number of couples are exchanging vows amid an expansive garden or with the splendor of the pounding surf providing a picturesque backdrop. If Mother Nature cooperates, outdoor weddings can go smoothly. But even if the weather does not cooperate, there still are ways couples can enjoy a memorable ceremony. Preparation and planning help keep outdoor weddings moving along. Weather can be unpredictable and unforgiving, so it is always best to account for various scenarios. The following are some tips to consider.

Keep wind in mind A stiff breeze can upset tents and wreak havoc on hairstyles. Be sure everything outdoors is properly secured and weighed down. Avoid light fabrics on a wedding gown that will get swept away by wind. A short, blusher veil may be more appropriate than a sweeping train. Couples should advise their hairstylists that they will be getting married outdoors, and looks should be well secured by bobby pins and gel to keep hair in place. Stick to real dishes for food service, as plastic or lightweight materials may get blown away.

Be mindful of hot weather Many outdoor weddings occur when temperatures are at their warmest. As anyone who has had to sit outdoors in the blazing sun for an extended period of time can attest, it can grow quite uncomfortable, especially when everyone is dressed to the nines. Advise guests in advance that the wedding will be taking place outdoors and to dress accordingly. Arrange to have shaded areas for guests who may struggle with the heat. Keep chilled bottled water nearby so guests can stay cool and refreshed. Ask the officiant to keep the ceremony brief so that guests are not melting away in their seats.

Check for power sources Choose a wedding location with easily accessible power outlets. Guests will certainly want to hear the vows, and that may require the use of microphones and a sound system. Having power available also makes it easier for bands and musicians to set up their equipment for an outdoor reception. If the wedding will be stretching into the evening hours, electricity will be needed to power supplemental lighting that illuminates the festivities. Ensure accessibility Outdoor terrain can prove tricky, especially

for older guests or those with mobility issues. When scouting locations, select a wheelchairaccessible spot that can be easily traversed. Understand that turf can become waterlogged and challenging to walk over should it rain the day of the wedding or prior. Plastic or fabric runners may make things easier. Also, choose a location that isn’t too far off the beaten path. It should be close enough to a parking lot and not require guests to have to take an extended hike through nature. Face away from the sun Glares can make it difficult for guests to see the ceremony. Be sure to arrange seats so that guests do not have to look into the sun. This is best achieved by having the sun behind everyone for the ceremony. It also ensures that you won’t end up with washedout photos or pictures of everyone squinting. Ensure food is properly chilled or heated Dining outdoors means keeping food safety in mind. Food that is supposed to be kept cool should remain on ice or be refrigerated until served. Hot foods should d see OUTDOOR WEDDING on page 14

and the reception, and that can save couples the cost of booking two separate locations and transporting out-of-town guests from one location to another. Venues are typically open to negotiation with regard to the price per person for the reception, and few will not have some wiggle room built into their initial quote. If young children and teenagers will be attending the wedding, negotiate lower rates for their meals, as they won’t be drinking alcohol and therefore won’t cost the venue as much as adult guests.

cities, are more expensive than others. Couples who come from small towns may benefit from tying the knot close to home, as vendors tend to charge less the further they are from large metropolises. Waterfront venues, regardless of which city they happen to be in, also tend to be more expensive than venues with less impressive surroundings. Couples willing to sacrifice city lights and breathtaking views of the water are likely to find more affordable venues for ceremonies and receptions.

peaks, which is generally considered the months of May and June and then also late-September into October, can expect to pay substantially more than couples willing to get married at other times of the year. Couples also can save money by choosing to get married on Friday or Sunday nights or Saturday afternoon, when many venues charge considerably less per person than they do on Saturday night, which remains the most popular night of the week to get married. The cost of a wedding is considerable, but couples can cut those costs in several ways if they’re willing to be flexible and negotiate with vendors. (METRO CREATIVE)

remain hot. Food in chafing dishes or served buffet-style also should be protected from insects. Improper handling of food can result in foodborne illnesses. No one wants to remember a wedding for intestinal discomfort. Use fresh flowers in potted plants Cut flowers tend to wilt prematurely in hot weather. Rather than waste money and beautiful flowers, choose potted plants that

will thrive if well tended. Guests can then take the plants home and continue to cherish the wedding long after it is over. Budget for a tent It is always better to have a contingency plan. Even if you have your heart set on an outdoor wedding have a backup plan in place if the weather is uncooperative. A tent with surrounding sidewalls may be sufficient. Otherwise, determine if there is an indoor location that can be kept on standby.

When you’re ready for something remarkable...

Mix up the candles Intersperse citronella candles with the decorative ones to help keep bugs at bay. You can also consider placing small bottles of insect repellent on the tables. Guests will appreciate the gesture when biting flies or mosquitoes want to join in the fun. Make sure Mother Nature doesn’t rain on your outdoor wedding. Plan for all the possibilities so that an outdoor ceremony or reception goes as smoothly as possible. (METRO CREATIVE)

Unexpected ways to make your destination wedding unforgettable Wedding planning season is in full swing and trend forecasts show more brides selecting destination weddings than ever before. Not only are destination weddings an affordable alternative to massive traditional weddings of past generations, they also make it easy for couples to create a customizable wedding that perfectly suits their personalities. If you think a destination wedding might be right for you, these ideas for creating an incredibly distinctive event are sure to inspire. Unique ceremony locations A beach is typically the top choice for destination weddings because it gives guests a vacation setting to enjoy before, during and after your big day. Keep in mind, just because you select a beach locale doesn’t mean you must have a seaside ceremony. Myrtle Beach, S.C., is a top location for destination weddings, but there are countless gardens, pergolas and fountains couples can choose as the backdrop for their vows. Standout accommodations Big weddings are becoming a thing of

the past – consider intimate spaces that bring guests together in an incredible setting instead. For example, the Bridge at North Beach Plantation in Myrtle Beach is a luxury penthouse suspended within the bridge that connects the two towers at the 4-Diamond Resort. With seven bedrooms, seven and a half baths, a media room and sweeping views of the ocean, everyone is sure to enjoy their time together to the fullest.

in a memorable keepsake. For example, some artists specialize in painting live events – you could hire one to capture the magic of the gathering. Guests will love watching the painting evolve throughout the night, and you’ll get a special piece of art you can display at home.

Hand-painted cakes One of the hottest new wedding trends is hand-painted cakes where a master baker uses artistry to create beautiful patterns and floral designs on fondant and other types of frosting. Cake artist Heidi Vukov of Croissants, Myrtle Beach, works closely with brides planning destination weddings to ensure their hand-painted cake is perfect for their big day. It’s a refreshing approach to classic wedding cake styles, and it is sure to impress guests.

Localized gift bags Although the ceremony may be intimate, guests will likely be traveling from all over the country. Start the experience right by creating localized gift bags that can be placed in rooms to greet your guests upon their arrival. Instead of typical gift-bag goodies like mints and water, delight guests with locally sourced items like chocolates or lotion from the resident boutique. Live artists Want to make your reception one of a kind? Hire a local artist to capture the moment

Reception surprises Unexpected surprises tied to the couple’s personality can make a magical day that much more memorable. For example, if you met d see DESTINATION on page 16

your beloved at a concert or your spouse has a special love for Adele, Bruce Springsteen or Elvis, hire a celebrity lookalike from a local theater to make a surprise appearance. Memorable thank-you gift Forget the box of candy almonds! Your guests came from across the country, so thank them with a special gift. Look no further than the local culture for inspiration. For example, the Gullah people local to the Myrtle Beach area weave gorgeous sweet grass baskets in traditional designs, a perfect gift for wedding guests. Another fun option would be to gift locally made hammocks, such as those from Pawley’s Island Hammocks. Remember, it’s your wedding and you should make it your own. A destination event is sure to leave a lasting impression on you and your guests for years to come. (BPT)

How to decide between a band or DJ Few things set the tone for a wedding ceremony and reception better than music. Music establishes ambience and serves to transition guests through the various components of the day. Music is played in various ways throughout a wedding. For example, the wedding ceremony may be accompanied by a pianist or violinist, while music during the reception is usually provided by a band or DJ. The decision of whether to hire a band or DJ often comes down to personal preference and budget. The following are some things couples should consider as they make their decision to go with a band or DJ. Band Live musicians spend years honing their crafts, and watching a band play at a wedding reception can be akin to attending a concert. A live band can bring with it a sense of sophistication. Performers can tone the music to the crowd and improvise if necessary to meet the needs of the room. A good bandleader also will serve as a master of ceremonies at the reception. Many wedding bands can competently play songs from various genres of music, while some are especially skilled at recreating the sound of a particular group. Bands tend to be more expensive than DJs, and that’s something couples must factor into their budgets if they prefer a band to a DJ. DJ The DJ is one of the first vendors people think of when they envision a wedding reception. Perhaps because they are less expensive, DJs tend to be more popular than bands among today’s couples. DJs are advantageous for various reasons. Thanks to the accessibility of digital music, DJs can often procure just about any song a couple desires for the reception. That’s a significant benefit for couples that want to hear the original versions of their favorite songs, and not a band’s take on those songs. DJs also can read the crowd and make adjustments to the music at any time. If a particular genre is not working, DJs can easily transition to another type of music to get guests back on their feet. That’s not always possible for bands whose repertoire is exclusive to a particular genre. Many DJs also blend songs seamlessly and may incorporate lights and other effects into their performances, which can encourage guests to loosen up and hit the dance floor.

DJs also tend to travel with less equipment than bands, so they will take up less space in a party room. No matter which road a couple chooses to travel, it’s a good idea to listen to a DJ or band perform in a live situation before making a final decision. Couples also should confirm that the performers they meet or audition will

be the ones who will perform at their weddings. Make sure this is written into your contract. Couples should provide a list of songs they want to hear well in advance of their wedding day. This affords a DJ ample time to find each song or bands to learn the songs before the big day arrives. (METRO CREATIVE)

The best shot

How to find the right wedding photographer Long after the final toast has been made or the last couple has left the dance floor, wedding photos will help couples relive the wonderful memories of their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers realize the important role photography plays in a wedding. Photos are how couples document their nuptials, and the right photographer can make all the difference. The following tips can help guarantee a successful wedding shoot and beautiful photos to recall the best moments of the day. Seek referrals There are scores of wedding photographers, and some are better than others. Word of mouth from other couples can help. Referrals can offer insight into a photographer’s personality and his or her abilities to work with the wedding party and guests throughout the day. Communication is key An important component of wedding photography actually starts well before the wedding day. The way a photographer communicates with you about your wishes and desired shots is very important, as this is when to discuss specific shots you want taken during the ceremony, such as whether the bride wants to be seen and pose with the groom prior to tying the knot. In addition, this is a great time for the photographer to get familiar with each venue’s rules regarding vendors. Choose a photographer who is confident and firm A good photographer will be able to direct photo subjects and get everyone to participate and in line. Brides and grooms likely won’t want to handle such tasks on their own, so a confident and firm yet cordial photographer can be an invaluable asset. Prepare a shoot list Meet with the photographer before the wedding and provide a list of all the shots you absolutely need to get. This way the photographer can plan for these as well as capture the candid moments throughout the day. Discuss a backup plan with the photographer

18

BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2015

Mishaps happen, even on the most carefully planned wedding day. Discuss what the photographer does to safeguard your digital photo files. Are they backed-up to a cloud or a secured offsite server? Does the photographer bring along a second camera in case the primary one has a malfunction? What happens if he or she is ill on the day of the wedding? How is a replacement chosen? Understanding how the photographer adapts to unforeseen situations can make you feel more confident in choosing one photographer instead of another. The camera gear should also have adequate memory to store all of the photos, and a few backup batteries can’t hurt, either. Consider hiring a photographer’s assistant or second shooter The photographer is less likely to miss a shot or fail to capture various perspectives of the wedding if he or she works with

a partner. While one photographer is doing close-up portraits, the other may be capturing candid moments from onlookers from another angle. Know what each package includes The photographer should clearly spell out which items and services are included as part of the contract. There should be no surprises when it’s time to pay the balance of the photographer’s fees, so go over each itemized detail to be sure the package in your contract is the one you really want. Get to know the photographer as a person It can be difficult to loosen up in front of the lens, particularly if you do not have a good rapport with the photographer. Do not judge the photographer on his or her body of work alone. You will likely grow more comfortable with the photographer if you get to know him or her in the months leading up to your wedding. (METRO CREATIVE)

Factors to consider when choosing

a wedding photography package

Couples must make a host of important decisions when planning their weddings. Some decisions, such as choosing a venue to host the reception, require more effort and research on the part of couples than others. One decision that couples must make carefully concerns the photography package they choose for their ceremonies and receptions. Wedding photographers play a big role on a couple’s big day, and it’s important that men and women about to tie the knot consider a host of factors before choosing the men or women they will ultimately task with visually documenting their wedding days.

If the engagement photo shoot is on your list of needs, then look for an agency that provides such services as part of its packages or agencies willing to include the engagement photo shoot for free or for an added fee.

Party size The number of people on the guest list should factor into your choice of wedding photographer. If your guest list is especially large, then you might want to consider hiring two or more photographers to document the day. Many agencies offer separate packages for couples who want one photographer and couples who prefer two or more photographers, so it pays to examine the Engagement photo shoot price differences between such packages to Couples who want to do an engagement see if more than one photographer can fit photo shoot may want to negotiate such a into your budget. Couples with relatively shoot into their photography package. Some small guests lists can typically get by with agencies include engagement shoots in their just a single photographer to document their packages while others do not. ceremonies and receptions.

Travel When discussing a wedding photography package, ask how much travel is included in the package. This is important for couples whose ceremonies are in a separate location from their receptions. If the distance between the ceremony site and the reception venue is considerable, you may have to pay extra for the photographer to travel between both sites. While a reasonable amount of travel is typically included in a photography package, it’s best that you confirm this prior to signing an agreement. Videography Many photography agencies also offer videography services in some of their wedding packages. Videography can be a great way for couples to document their wedding days, and it can be fun for couples to watch their wedding videos with their families down the road. (METRO CREATIVE)

Five expert tips for a fivestar wedding experience The average couple shells out nearly $27,000 just to say their “I do’s,” according to a recent survey. That doesn’t include the cost of the honeymoon, either. If you’re spending that kind of money, shouldn’t your unforgettable wedding be a five-star event? “It’s possible to plan a wedding with five-star touches at nearly any budget level,” says Jenna Check, wedding specialist at The American Club Resort in Kohler, Wis., one of just 36 hotels and resorts worldwide to earn both the Forbes Five-Star Award and the AAA FiveDiamond designation. Consider these wedding ideas from the wedding planning pros at The American Club Resort:

Not sure what to do with the leftover cake? Freeze the top layer to be thawed and eaten on your first anniversary, or serve the extra cake the following day at a giftopening party.

As your wedding day approaches, arrange a massage and spa time for yourself and your attendants. “A massage for the bride is not just a luxury,” Kolb says. “It’s a tried-and-true way of calming nerves prior to your special day.”

3

– Guys, and grooms, need a break, too. Brides aren’t the only ones who can feel stressed before the wedding day. Bridegrooms and groomsmen can also benefit from some relaxation. If you’re doing a destination wedding, take advantage of recreational opportunities like golf to help bond and decompress. “Enjoy everything at a leisurely pace,” advises Ed Elsner, tournament coordinator at Whistling Straits and Blackwolf Run. “Play the day before the wedding, not on the wedding day, so that you don’t stress yourself with conflicting responsibilities. d see FIVE TIPS on page 22 BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2015

4

– Personalize everything, including your drinks. Personalization is a popular trend in weddings, and it touches every aspect of your day, from the colors you choose for your bouquet and bridesmaid gowns, to the hors d’oeuvres and entrees served at the reception. Don’t forget to personalize your drink selection, too. Missy Dortman, director of meetings and events, says her team often receives requests from couples to create a personalized cocktail for their weddings. “We try to incorporate something special from their courting, such as the drink the bride might have enjoyed on their first date, a drink they always share, or something that pays homage to the color of the attendants’ dresses,” Dortman says. “One fun couple named Brad and Alexandra chose to serve

Brandy Alexanders.”

– Variety is the spice of life - and it makes for great pictures, too. Photos of your wedding will be the tangible memory of your big day, so it’s important to keep in mind how they’ll look when you’re choosing your wedding venue, says Christine Loose, resident manager for the American Club and Inn on Woodlake. Look for venues that offer a variety of picture settings, from a beautifully landscaped garden setting to an elegant courtyard to a paved lane for carriage rides. “Your wedding is one of the most important days of your life, with memories and photos you’ll look back on forever,” Check says. “With creativity, planning and the right venue, you can ensure your big day is a five-star experience for everyone – especially you!” To learn more about the American Club Resort, visit www.AmericanClub.com. Hidden expenses that can sink your wedding budget I

n the days of yore, the responsibility of paying for a wedding fell to the bride’s parents. But that tradition has largely fallen by the wayside in recent years, when more and more couples have used their own savings to finance their weddings. Few couples enter the process of planning their weddings unaware of just how expensive weddings can get, but costs can easily begin to escalate if couples are not careful. Couples know that certain wedding expenses, such as the cost of booking a reception hall, will eat up a large portion of their budgets. But there are some hidden expenses that couples must build into their budgets to avoid finding themselves in debt as they walk down the aisle as husband and wife.

traditional paper invitations, which include return envelopes that tradition suggests, should also be stamped. Save-the-date cards have grown in popularity as well, and these cards must also be stamped and mailed. Depending on the size of your guest list, postage can cost several hundred dollars before you mail your last invitation. And don’t forget to save some money for postage to mail thank-you cards once the big day has come and gone. Overtime Overtime fees for reception hall staff and additional outside vendors are typically written into contracts, but few couples imagine needing more than the

predetermined allotment of time noted in their contracts. But it’s better to be safe than sorry, as unanticipated events such as a misplaced wedding license or heavy traffic on the way to the venue can force the party to start late and thus extend past its deadline. Set aside some money for overtime so you don’t find yourselves scrounging for dollars or charging the extra few hundred dollars on your credit cards. Weddings are expensive, and even more so when hidden fees start to make their presence felt. Couples who build such fees into their budgets will find it easier to avoid breaking the bank than those who don’t. (METRO CREATIVE)

Taxes Sales tax might not seem so significant when you’re buying everyday items, but the taxes add up quickly when paying for a wedding. Depending on where you live, state and local sales tax can exceed nine percent in the U.S., and some Canadians pay as much as 15 percent in combined sales taxes depending on where they live. Before signing contracts with any vendors, couples should get the price including sales tax written into their contracts, as failing to do so may result in a several thousand dollar surprise when the time to pay up arrives. Gratuities Gratuities are another potentially hefty expense that often takes engaged couples by surprise as they start to plan their weddings. Some reception halls build gratuities for staff into their estimates, and these tips for the staff can be as high as 25 percent at some venues. But even if gratuities for reception hall staff are already accounted for, don’t forget to include tips for additional vendors the day of the wedding. Couples may be expected to tip the florist, photographer, band or DJ and even the reception hall maître d’ if his or her gratuity is not included in the aforementioned staff tip. Brides-to-be typically tip their hairstylist and makeup artist on the day of the wedding as well. Postage Couples who plan to invite guests via email or online invitations can skirt the cost of postage. But many couples still prefer BRIDAL GUIDE • SPRING/SUMMER 2015

party After the

Seven tips for a great honeymoon A couple’s honeymoon is their first real chance to relax and unwind after the hustle and bustle of wedding planning. Couples who want to make sure their first getaway as husband and wife goes off without a hitch might want to heed the following advice. Start saving early Honeymoons are expensive, so to afford the vacation of your dreams it’s wise to begin saving for the honeymoon as early as possible. It may be well worth it to compromise and make sacrifices in other areas to ensure you have enough funds for your dream honeymoon getaway. Do not expect cash gifts at your wedding to pay for your trip. If you do, you may be sorely disappointed when the time comes to take off. Read online reviews Online reviews can paint an accurate picture of a potential honeymoon destination. Look at vacationer-supplied photographs to see how the accommodations match up to the

resort’s own marketing materials. You don’t want too many surprises, such as service fees, dirty rooms or a lack of beach amenities, to ruin your trip. Plan at least one exciting outing While on your honeymoon, be sure to go on at least one adventure. Try an activity you have never done before, such as snorkeling, traveling a zip line or swimming with stingrays. Pack early After a long wedding day and reception spent dancing into the wee hours of the morning, you probably do not want to spend time packing. Pack your suitcases and travel essentials in advance of your wedding day so you have more time to sleep in before you depart for the airport. Also, remember not to over-pack. You want to have room for d see HONEYMOON on page 26

Did you know? There are various theories as to the origin of the word “honeymoon.” One such theory suggests the word traces its origins to the Old English phrase “hony moone,” which suggests the honeymoon was initially steeped in cynicism. “Hony” is a reference to honey and, the theory suggests, refers to the strong feelings of affection and sweetness newly married couples harbor and display for each other. However, “moone” is a reference to how fleeting this period of time is and how it is likely to change as quickly as the moon changes. One rosier theory as to the origin of the word “honeymoon” suggests the word dates back to the fifth century, when calendars were based on the moon cycle. During this period, newly married couples drank mead (which accounts for the “honey”) throughout their first month of marriage (or for a full cycle of the moon), as mead was a beverage many believed to be an aphrodisiac. options, including a blend-andgo smoothie cup. Use the S55 to make breakfast smoothies in the morning, salad dressing for lunch, soup for dinner, and even dips and drinks for last minute entertaining. Multi-taskers Pots and pans are a registry staple, but you should also add specialty cookware and bake ware, such as a roasting pan, rectangular baker or covered baking dish. Choosing oven-to-table pieces makes it easy to go straight from cooking to presentation, all in one dish that works for both tasks. Many of these dishes also include lids for easily storing leftovers. By asking for a set that comes with multiple pieces, you’ll be ready to create brunch casseroles, lasagna

for dinner and a warm bread pudding for dessert. Backyard barbecues An outdoor grill can help set the scene for family gatherings, tailgate parties or just relaxing with friends. Decide if you prefer gas, which offers easy operation and cleanup, or charcoal, which many barbecue connoisseurs say provides a more intense, grilled flavor. Also, think about extra features you may want, such as a built-in thermometer, side burners, shelves or tool hooks. Don’t forget skewers, cooking utensils such as spatulas, tongs and grill forks, as well as other accessories like a grill mitt, grill basket or pizza pan. Be sure to consider space as well. If you live in an apartment, you may opt for a smaller grill or one that hooks directly on your balcony.

the souvenirs you purchase along the way. Enjoy your surroundings Put down the smartphone or tablet enough to truly enjoy your surroundings. A honeymoon is an opportunity to relax, and that may not be possible if you’re tied to your devices. Friends at home can wait for your status updates and wedding pictures. Splurge on something expensive Whether it’s an ultra-fancy dinner or an exotic souvenir, indulge. Leave your itinerary open After scores of wedding appointments and watching the clock, it’s nice to fly by the seat of your pants. (METRO CREATIVE)

Serve in style Be ready for dinner parties with formal dinnerware and crystal stemware. Select timeless patterns that will look fresh and inviting on your table for years to come. Add a pop of color and personality with low-cost, on-trend accent pieces, such as chargers or a coffee or teapot. Register for a few different types of glasses including water goblets, wine glasses and stem less or highball glasses, depending on your drink of choice. Experts recommend requesting eight to 12 place settings, but you may want more if you plan to host large events. Unconventional tools Once you’ve got the basics covered, consider some outof-the-box kitchen items. Keep

recipes handy by registering for a cutting board that has place for a tablet. For easy entertaining, a slate cheese board enables you to write the name of each cheese or appetizer right on the board. Or, pick one with a hidden drawer for knives and storage. Friends and family often like to give a signature gift that will make you think of them each time you use it. If you need extra advice on what to choose for your registry, don’t hesitate to ask a consultant at your local department store or download checklists from popular wedding websites and blogs. Creating a wedding registry is often the first step toward building your home as a married couple, so get the right items to make it a happy one.
