Use this convenient list to figure out the costs involved in planning your special day.

Six tips With everything that goes into your wedding day, those once-in-a-lifetime moments will go by in a blur, which is why hiring a professional wedding photographer is a must. After all, the last thing you should be worrying about is whether your photographer will be able to capture your big day. The key? Prepare yourself so that you can accurately evaluate the “right” photographer for you. “The best photographer will take the time to build a rapport with you and use his or her experience and creativity to capture the mood, personality, ambiance and even the geography of your wedding,” says PPA (Professional Photographers of America) photographer Berit Bizjak. “The finest wedding photography is more than a series of still pictures. It’s physical poetry – it tells the story of the day and

for planning your wedding photos like a pro

portrays the essence of both people and place.” To this end, PPA, the largest international nonprofit association created by professional photographers, has taken the guesswork out of the process by offering six tips to help you plan your wedding photos like a pro. Book far in advance The best photographers get booked quickly – sometimes as much as a year in advance – so don’t wait until the last minute to book your photographer. Show them the money Now is not the time to skimp on your photo budget. Call around and get a price range for services, and remember – after the cake is long gone, and the dress is stored away, your wedding photos will be the only things left to share and enjoy for years to

come, so don’t cut too many corners on your photography budget – you’ll end up regretting it. Make sure your photographer is a real pro Only hire someone who has liability insurance, experience taking the style of photos you want, backup equipment and a plan for when things go south. Ideally, he or she is a PPA photographer. PPA photographers do more than just snap pictures. They have the technical expertise and artistry to make you look your best and bring your vision to life. They also abide by a strict code of ethics that makes a real difference. Request to see a full gallery of real weddings Look at full wedding coverage (not just a small selection of each wedding’s best moments) to see a photographer’s true style and get a sense of how he or she might tell your “story.” Do you prefer more artistic or traditional poses? Would you rather have a photojournalist approach or a mix of all styles? Work with your photographer to create a detailed shot list PPA wedding photographers can also help you create that shot list, as they know what key moments tell a wedding story and can prepare for those. But talk about your must-haves, and walk through the entire program with your photographer ahead of time. Share your expectations ahead of time to ensure that he or she captures the key shots, while remaining attentive and available to catch the best candid moments. Plan your post-wedding photo strategy ahead of time Almost as soon as the festivities are over, you’ll be eager to look at the photos so you can relive your big day over and over again. Ask your photographer for teasers or a “sneak peek” and a timeline for when the rest of the pictures will be available. Will they give you an online gallery for family and friends to choose the images they want? Again, knowing these things ahead of time will make things easy on the back end, sparing you any heartache. Get more tips like these, and prepare for the best wedding at photos</a at PPA.com/SeeTheDifference/ Wedding.

Responsibilities vary for wedding party participants When asked to play a role in the wedding of a friend or family member, most people are honored and willing to do whatever it takes. That willingness to be helpful is often a blessing, as wedding party participants each have their own unique responsibilities.

Maid of honor and best man The maid of honor and best man are counterparts in the wedding. The bride and groom’s right hand woman and man, respectively, the maid of honor and best man are often siblings or very close friends of the bride or groom. Though their responsibilities are similar, the maid of honor and best man don’t have completely identical roles. The maid of honor might have the most responsibilities of anyone aside from the bride and groom. The maid of honor will help the bride shop for her dress and must also plan the bridal shower and the bachelorette party. The maid of honor’s duties also extend to the wedding day itself, when she will be expected to help

the bride get dressed and toast the new bride at the reception that night. The best man’s role includes organizing the bachelor party and toasting the groom at the reception. The best man also plays a logistical role, organizing the newlyweds’ transportation to the airport the morning after the wedding as well as organizing the groomsmen’s gift to the couple. Bridesmaids and groomsmen The role of the bridesmaids and groomsmen are similar. Bridesmaids and groomsmen are often the siblings or close friends of the bride and groom, and they accompany each other down the aisle during the wedding procession. Typically, the role of bridesmaid and groomsmen is to offer any assistance in making the ceremony go smoothly. Groomsmen may act as ushers, while bridesmaids might help address wedding invitations and choose vendors for the ceremony and reception. How involved the bridesmaids and groomsmen become is often contingent on how close they live to the bride and groom and how much help is needed the day of the ceremony. Flower girl and ring bearer The flower girl and the ring bearer are typically very young members of the family, such as very young siblings or a niece or nephew of the bride or groom. The flower girl will carry a basket of flowers during the wedding procession, often tossing flower petals on the ground to signify the bride’s entrance. The ring bearer is a boy and carries a pillow with the rings sewn on it during the wedding procession.

Parents The bride and groom’s parents play the role of hosts. The tradition of the bride’s parents paying for the wedding entirely by themselves has largely fallen by the wayside thanks to the escalating costs of throwing a wedding. However, if the bride’s parents are footing the bill, then they will typically act as hosts of the wedding. In that instance, the groom’s parents will host the rehearsal dinner the night before the wedding. During the ceremony, the bride is most often walked down the aisle by her father, though some brides choose to have both parents included in the walk down the aisle. The groom’s parents will often walk down the aisle ahead of the procession and take their seats. The parents may also play a role in the months leading up to the wedding. For instance, the mother of the bride might help plan the bridal shower, while the father of the groom might help plan any activities, such as a golf outing, for the groomsmen and additional friends of the groom a day or two before the wedding.

Five trendy

wedding registry gift ideas for casual lifestyles While your wedding should be the happiest day of your life, it can also be the happiest day for your kitchen. With a well-planned registry, you’ll be enjoying the fun, creativity and bonding of cooking together at home for years to come – from leisurely weekend breakfasts to romantic dinners and toasts to cap off the day. A wedding registry should reflect how you really live. Not everyone focuses their social life on formal dinner parties with the kind of fine china, silverware and crystal found on traditional wedding gift lists. Today’s registries reflect current lifestyles with new twists and trends. “Wedding registries are trending toward more casual, hip and high-tech kitchenware, such as nonstick woks instead of chafing dishes and iced tea makers instead of tea pots,” says Peter Giannetti, editor-in-chief of HomeWorld Business. “Also, registries are not as bride-centric as they used to be. With both brides and grooms involved, gifts such as high-tech coffee centers and growlers for craft beer are becoming more popular.” Selecting gifts at a variety of price points is both good etiquette and good strategy. Big-ticket items give guests the opportunity for a grand gesture, and they also make great group gifts. Be sure to include moderately priced items that are CONTINUED ON PAGE

The perfect fit

Finding the right look for the wedding dress is crucial

Few wardrobe decisions are scrutinized as much as a bride-to-be’s choice of wedding gown. Finding the perfect gown that flatters the future bride’s figure while stunning her guests and soon-to-be husband is a labor of love for many brides. The Bridal Association of America estimates a bride-to-be will spend between $1,500 and $2,000 total on her gown, veil and accessories. Brides often spend months, if not years, shopping for the right gown. Finding the right gown means having an understanding of what silhouettes are available and what flatters certain body types. After all, you want to look like the best version of yourself when getting married. Here is a look of some of the common types of gown silhouettes and why choosing this shape might be right for you.

Ballgown

A ballgown dress is truly a classic style, evoking images of fairy tale princesses. With a fitted bodice and full skirt that flairs at the waist, this silhouette is usually good for all body types. Because the full skirt – typically poofed-up by crinoline – will hide the hips and thighs, women with a pear shape might gravitate toward this style. The ballgown style may not be ideal for petite women, as the skirt may overwhelm their figures.

A-line

Another silhouette very forgiving or appropriate for many body types is the A-line gown. A-line cut dresses should be the goto style for anyone looking to minimize perceived flaws. The cut of the dress will fit to the waist and gradually fan out from the hips to form the outline of an uppercase “A.” When in doubt, A-line gowns are classic and sensible and a favorite among brides.

Trumpet

Women who prefer something a little more form-fitting may select a trumpet silhouette. This dress is fitted through the body and then the gown flares out at midthigh level. Women with taught stomachs and hourglass figures can benefit from this style gown, but those who do not want anything tight in the hips and thighs will want to CONTINUED ON PAGE

select something else.

Mermaid

A bit more fitted than the trumpet, this silhouette is close to the body from the chest down to the knee. The skirt then flares out slightly by the knee. Tall, thin women generally look best in this type of gown.

Modified A-line

A balance between a traditional A-line and a more fitted gown, the modified A-line does not flare out as much. But it does flare out enough from the waist to hide areas around the hips and thighs. This is another good choice for a wide array of figures.

Tea length

Brides who do not want a gown that reaches the floor can opt for a tea length dress, on which the skirt generally falls between the ankle and the knee.

Sheath

Lean brides who want simplicity in their gowns can opt for a sheath silhouette. The narrow shape of the gown from the neckline to the hem will definitely accentuate the body shape. Therefore, women who are shy may want to select a different option. Petite women who may be overwhelmed by more fabric can usually wear a sheath gown with success. Although a bride may have a wedding gown style in mind, it is a good idea to try on a number of different silhouettes to find the one that is most flattering. Bridal salon employees are usually well-versed in matching body type to a gown and can prove invaluable when selecting a dress.

Tips for trying on wedding gowns Many brides-to-be look forward to the day when they visit a bridal salon and are able to try on gowns for the first time. There are certain tips that can make the day go much more smoothly and potentially reduce the amount of time it may take to find the perfect gown. • Wear a supportive, well-constructed strapless bra or corset in your correct size. If you will be wearing a petticoat, also have the right size available. • Go without face makeup when trying on gowns so they remain clean. • Try to wear your hair similar to the style you have in mind for your wedding. • Note that the size of the wedding gown you will wear is typically one to two sizes larger than your day-to-day clothes. Proper measurements can be matched to designers’ size charts. • It’s best to limit the number of people with whom you shop to one or two trusted friends or family members. An entourage can be confusing. • It’s always better to order a slightly larger gown and leave room for alterations if you are between sizes. (METRO CREATIVE)

tep into the Treasure Hut just northeast of Delavan and enter a wondrous array of floral delights and an unusual selection of gift items. This award-winning shop has been the go-to place for brides and grooms from the Southern Wisconsin and Northern Illinois areas since it opened in 1969. Owned by husband and wife event planners Kevin and Stacy Hermann, The Treasure Hut features the kind of expertise and customer service only a second-generation business can offer. Weddings are just the apex of the special celebrations at which this couple and their

staff excel. “No project is too big or too little,” Kevin said. “We do it all. You’ve got to have so many choices to please everyone – not every place can offer that. This is beyond what a normal florist shop would (offer).” “Simple or complex, we have everything needed for the wedding ceremony, and then for the reception,” Stacy added. The Hermanns maintain a seasonally stocked greenhouse and a large storage building for everything associated with their business. Typically, Stacy takes care of the weddings, and Kevin decorates everything from parties to corporate gatherings, to lavish Christmas displays at resorts such as Lake Lawn Lodge. The Hermanns also have a small shop specializing in giftware that serves as Stacy’s special meeting and planning area for brides on Broad Street in Lake Geneva. It is at the same site where the sister store of the original Treasure Hut served customers for many years. The Lake Geneva shop shares space with another business called Good Vibes.

A family business Kevin Herrmann’s father, Richard, and his wife, Jean, started the Delavan floral business in 1969.

“He had worked for several shops in Milwaukee during high school,” Stacy said. “It got into his blood.” When the time came to put down their own business roots, Richard and Jean decided not to open a florist shop in Milwaukee. That market was already too crowded for their tastes. They began looking for a potential property that would allow for both expansion and storage, while giving them the creative elbowroom they craved. While investigating Delavan, the couple discovered the Nieman Greenhouse near the corner of Highway 11 and Mound Road for sale. They bought it. “There was room for both of them to create here,” Stacy explained. The location is close enough to Milwaukee and Chicago to attract big corporate clients, at the same time showing individuals the couples’ unusual depth of decorating expertise. It was perfect: the original shop, greenhouse, and storage areas are still viable parts of The Treasure Hut. Richard and Jean became well known as florists, hired by resorts such as The Abbey for holiday decor, and as event decorators for parties, weddings, funerals, birthdays, and other memorable occasions. Richard and Jean brought their son Kevin up in the business. “I started working here when I was old enough to sweep up, water the plants, and make little things,” Kevin explained. “When I started driving, I delivered flowers.” He counts 1994 as the year he started formally working with The Treasure Hut. The fun really started for Kevin when he became skilled enough to help his father with Richard’s creative seasonal animated displays that were always in demand. “We’ve done huge moving snowmen and nutcrackers,” Kevin said. “Really huge –the snowman’s hat and head were over six feet tall. We’ve done enormous Christmas trees, flying witches for Halloween – you name it, we’ve probably done it.”

Treasure Hut’s reputation extends north past Milwaukee and south into Chicago for such displays. Kevin and his team are kept very busy, especially during holidays. Stacy also began working for the business during 1994. When Richard and Jean decided to retire in 2004, Kevin and Stacy bought the business and continued it with the same quality and dedication to customer service as Kevin’s father and mother. And their reputation since has increased because of their attention to detail and their creativity. The Treasure Hut specializes in weddings. “Most of my brides come from Illinois, particularly the Chicago area,” Stacy said. “Many of their families or their friends have second homes or cabins in this area. They know about our great prices and good service.” Putting together textures and colors into harmonious blends and listening to what brides want are two of Stacy’s strong points. “Sometimes they bring in big binders full of ideas they want for their wedding,” she said. Stacy knows how to narrow down the “I wants” to fit the budget, and still provide plenty of special bang for the available bucks. “Receptions have gotten more complex because people spend more time there than at the wedding itself,” Stacy said. “During some

ceremonies, the wedding party and their guests spend about 45 minutes in the sanctuary. Then they spend hours at the reception.” Decorating for those receptions has become equally as important as decorating the area where the wedding takes place. It’s no wonder brides and grooms are ordering more flowers and decorative items for post-wedding festivities.

Creative with colors

When asked what’s new in nuptial details, Stacy considered before replying, “Color themes. Color is primary now. Often there are three or four colors that come together. And there’s lots more thought put into weddings. We can incorporate the brides’ and/or groom’s favorite things, such as golf tees – one of our brides was a golf pro, and the tees were important to her. “We’ve made table arrangements with lemons, with fruit such as apples, with peacock feathers and, for a 1920s theme, ostrich feathers,” Stacy smiled, remembering. “We even had one bride who was allergic to flowers. We used candlelight, branches, and lots of nonfloral items. We’ve also done a Wisconsin nature wedding.” (An excellent picture of their rustic decorating theme for this nuptial is on The Treasure Hut’s website.)

“The most dangerous thing we’ve ever hung as decoration for a wedding is a big chandelier with lights and flowers, including strands of orchids hanging from it,” Kevin said. “That’s also the most unusual thing we’ve designed so far. It was used in a reception held in the Pavilion tent at The Abbey.” For another wedding, Stacy and Kevin came up with more unique decorations, including boxes full of greenery hung from the ceiling. Anything a bride or groom can imagine at their wedding or reception can be designed by the talented team from The Treasure Hut. Currently, the most popular flowers for weddings are hydrangeas. “They’ve got big, beautiful blooms,” Stacy said. “Roses are still a favored choice, especially the English Garden or cabbage rose.” Those are rounded blooms with so many petals the flower appears almost like a fat cabbage, hence the odd nickname. “And they smell good, too,” Kevin added. “Not like those roses that look pretty, but have had the scent bred out of them.” Stacy gets requests to use special fabrics on a regular basis. “Yards of tulle or chiffon draped from pillars, arches, gazebos, and ceilings is very popular right now.” The fabric softens the surrounding light, and makes everything appear richer and more magical. Special lighting is also

popular as an accent on tables, up walls, and across ceilings. “We can put color-themed floral sprays on wedding cakes, too,” Stacy said. “They’re really beautiful.” These can be added to a plain confection, or used in association with frosting decorations. The result is spectacular. The live blooms bring an additional dimension to a typical brides’ or groom’s cake. Stacy has some sound advice for prospective brides. “Plan your wedding, but don’t overthink it. You need to have fun, too.” Kevin added, “And don’t think there has to be a perfect match for a certain color, such as the mother of the bride’s dress. Sometimes a color that blends is better.”

Handling the hassle

The serene atmosphere of The Treasure Hut changes into one of controlled tension during preparation for a wedding or decorating assignments. “Our jobs make us work nights, weekends, and holidays,” Kevin said. “Many of our biggest projects come at times when other people are on vacation. It’s part of the business.” The Treasure Hut also offers CONTINUED ON PAGE

That’s why we need such a large storage area.” She can also take care of printing wedding invitations, coordinated reply cards and thankyou notes. When these two say they can accomplish nearly everything associated with a wedding but the special clothing, the catering, and getting everyone to the ceremony on time, they mean it. Using Stacy’s and Kevin’s expertise can take a lot of the pressure off a soonto-be-wedded couple. Nowhere in the shop is it obvious that The Treasure Hut has won several awards. If hung on the walls, they’d probably be nearly obscured by greenery and gift items. Being given the Bride’s Choice Award, and the Couples Choice Award from the Weddingwire network isn’t very important to Kevin and Stacy. They also have received national recognition for excellence in party planning and event decoration. What is important to this couple is their relationship with their customers, demonstrated by their exemplary customer service, and the creativity that highlights everything they do. They’re also one of the few local shops listed as a representative for both Teleflora and FTD. “We’re starting our son in the business,” Kevin said. Logan is 11. He takes care of some sweeping and watering plants in the greenhouse. “Who knows,” Stacy said, “perhaps some day we’ll have a third generation at The Treasure Hut.” This business may look small, and it’s in what may seem to some an out-of-the-way location. But the owners’ hearts and talents are as huge as the animated decorations they devise. “We’re always ready for new and fun challenges,” Kevin stated. “We’re always searching the market for new ‘wow’ items to use at weddings and parties,” Stacy added. “Just call us with questions.” The Treasure Hut maintains a website at www.treasurehut. com, and is also on Facebook, Weddingwire, and other social media. Seating

YOUR WEDDING GUESTS Weddings are filled with many emotions – happiness, excitement and anticipation, to name a few. With all of the positive emotions a wedding may drum up, in the mix there may be a few negative ones, including feelings of being overwhelmed at all the details that need to be completed on a deadline. One aspect of wedding planning that tends to send people into panic is wedding reception-seating arrangements. The thought of having 200 friends and family members together under one roof – and then attempting to seat them next to an acceptable group of people – can cause some couples to hyperventilate. Every family has its ups and downs, and there are certain people who get along well and a few who clash. Ensuring that a wedding is memorable for all the right reasons (and not for the brawl at table three) is why seating arrangements are so important. Many couples can use a little advice when seating guests, while others would love another person to handle the seating arrangements for them. Here are some guidelines for setting up reception seating arrangements: • Place yourselves as well as the bridal party, at a separate table that is in a prime location in the room. Be sure to allow the spouses or dates of bridal party members at the same table so couples remain together. • Some couples choose to seat both sets of parents at one table together – the parents table. Grandparents may also be seated at this table, depending on the number of people each table can accommodate. • If children under the age of seven are invited, they should be seated with their parents. Children between ages seven and 14 can be seated at a separate kids’ table. • Be mindful of guests with disabilities or mobility issues. Seat them close to the door, bathrooms or food station.

• Instead of separating the bride and the groom’s family to separate sides, intermingle the tables to promote conversation. • Consider arranging guests by common interests at each table, seating business associates or parents’ friends together. • Take into consideration people who have relationship rifts and try to seat them separately. But don’t stress about this too much because it won’t be possible to

accommodate everyone. You’ll have to hope that at your wedding a certain level of decorum will preside. • It’s not unheard of to let guests seat themselves. This takes the pressure of finding a seat for everyone off of you as a couple and enables you to think about the other tasks at hand. This can take place at a buffet wedding or a smaller affair.

What a bride wants

Relaxation and sophistication favored choices for bachelorette parties As a rite of passage, the bachelorette party has long gotten a bum rap. Stereotypes persist of the bride’s nightbefore-the-wedding gathering as a ladiesonly version of the raucous bachelor party. Yet the truth is, a growing number of brides crave a tasteful, relaxing and deeply personal send-off for their single days. In fact, a relaxing getaway ranked high as an ideal bachelorette party for 59 percent of brides-to-be in the Ultimate Bridesmaids Census. Sixty-seven percent wanted dinner, dancing and time spent with their closest friends, and 23 percent wanted something non-traditional that really reflected their personal interests. “Bachelorette parties are as unique as the women they celebrate,” says Michael Belot, general manager of Destination Kohler – home to AAA five-diamond and

Forbes five-star hotel that hosts scores of brides, bridesmaids and weddings each year. “We’re seeing an emphasis on relaxation for the bride and companionship with her friends in today’s bachelorette parties. Brides want to spend their special night – and often an entire weekend – in a soothing, stress-free atmosphere before the hectic pace of their wedding day.” So what are the things that brides and bridesmaids tell the Destination Kohler team they must have for their bachelorette soirees? Belot points to five in-demand elements. Spa time Whether it’s a group mani-pedi, a yoga class or a lunch of delicious, healthful spa cuisine, bachelorette groups crave

spa time. Parties are looking for spas that offer a comprehensive list of salon services, familiar and new massages and body treatments, and easy access to luxury accommodations. For example, at Destination Kohler, bachelorette groups often book rooms in the Carriage House, which is located above the Forbes five-star Kohler Waters Spa. Participants can spend the day in their spa robes if they choose. “Kohler Waters Spa is by far the most popular request and activity among bachelorette parties, and is often the center of the trip,” says Garrett Mersberger, manager of Kohler Waters Spas. Playing to this trend, many resorts have created female-centric spa packages CONTINUED ON PAGE

BACHELORETTE PARTIES like the Girls Getaway. Great food Forget the pigs in a blanket, deviled eggs and other de rigueur finger foods long associated with bridal showers. Modern bachelorette groups are looking for dining options that are luxurious and delicious, or that accommodate lifestyle needs such as gluten-free or low-calorie diets. Spa fare often fits well with this preference. Resorts with multiple dining options afford bachelorette guests the opportunity to dine lightly for lunch and then enjoy a more indulgent dinner. Bonding activities Hitting the bar and dancing the night away are no longer the only bonding activities for bachelorette groups. From yoga classes and golf outings to wine and chocolate pairings, brides-to-be are looking for more diverse, sophisticated

activities they can do with their girlfriends. A location “away from it all” Nearly a third of respondents in the Bridesmaid Census said they didn’t want to go crazy for a bachelorette party, they just wanted to enjoy time with their friends. Perhaps it’s because their lives are about to change dramatically. Maybe it’s a need to reaffirm the girlfriend bond that has seen them through life’s ups and downs to reach this happy point in their lives. Whatever their reasons, a growing number of brides are looking for a bachelorette experience that transports them and their closest friends far away from their daily routines. Some fulfill this wish by choosing a resort location far from home. Others may choose accommodations that are more intimate. At Destination Kohler,

19

bachelorette parties can also opt to stay at Sandhill, the resort’s luxury private cabin that sits on 350 natural acres just a 10-minute drive from the resort. Personalization Twenty-three percent of surveyed brides said they wanted a bachelorette party that was deeply personal and tailored to their individual tastes and interests. For some, that’s a spa experience. For others, a golf getaway. Even when they’ve booked a bachelorette package, brides and their bridesmaids are looking for ways the resort can customize their experience. Add-ons are popular, from spa treatments to wine tastings. Bachelorette party experiences are becoming as individual as the brides they celebrate, Belot notes. “Brides are not cookie cutter, so their bachelorette parties shouldn’t be either.”

Wedding favors and gifts

everyone can feel good about You faithfully recycle at home, use a refillable BPA-free water bottle and charge your smartphone with a solar recharger. When it’s time to choose wedding favors for your own nuptials, or a gift for someone else’s wedding, do you find environmental awareness taking a backseat to style? It doesn’t have to. It’s possible to give wedding favors and gifts that are natural, responsible and useful – items that everyone can feel good about giving and receiving. Kitchen-related products commonly appear on many wedding registry lists, and creative couples often distribute small pieces of kitchenware as favors to their guests. For gifts that are sustainable, creative and practical, look beyond the pots, pans and dishes to the food itself. Food-inspired wedding gifts Many newly married couples will be setting up their homes together for the first time. They may already have the basics, but you can help them round out their kitchen with some useful utensils they may not have realized they need. For example, every cook can benefit from a well-stocked spice rack. Purchase an attractive spice rack and fill it with sustainably sourced, natural spices like those from Frontier Co-op. Choose basic spices like versatile organic basil, cinnamon, and garlic, then add in some

exotic options such as garam masala (an allpurpose Indian spice), Himalayan pink salt or black sesame seed. Making pizza at home can be a fun, easy meal for busy newlyweds. Put together a pizza-making kit, complete with a quality pizza cutter, a pizza stone for baking, a wedge of Parmesan, some baking yeast, and pizza seasonings like oregano, basil and garlic powder. Place everything in a basket and complete the gift with a book of pizza recipes. Gardening is a popular activity, and if your newlywed friends will be trying their hand at it, they may find themselves with lots of leftover produce. Giving canning supplies, as a wedding gift can be a great way to encourage their love of growing their own produce, while helping ensure nothing goes to waste. Fill a canning pot with supplies like canning funnels and jars, and canning and pickling spices like bay leaves, peppercorns, celery seed, cumin, dill, mustard and salt, or even a Pickling Spice Blend. Wedding favors they’ll savor If you’re planning your own wedding, food favors can excite guests and fulfill your desire to be eco-friendly and creative. Tea is a soothing and sophisticated beverage that can make a great wedding favor. Simply purchase heart-shaped tea infusers and fill them with a variety of

loose teas, such as chamomile, peppermint, Darjeeling, Earl Grey, or black, green or white teas. Accent the favor with a ribbon in your wedding colors. Pepper is a ubiquitous seasoning in numerous cuisines from around the world. For a useful, welcome wedding favor that will expand guest’s culinary knowledge, why not give different gourmet peppers of the world? Peppercorns come in a variety of shades and heat levels – and even shapes. Present guests with a small peppermill and a selection of gourmet peppercorns. Grilling is a great American past time. If your wedding will take place in spring or summer, grilling spices and seasoning blends can be a fun wedding favor that will turn into your guest’s go-to item when they grill. Look for a variety of seasonings that work with steaks, fish, fowl and even vegetables. Choose organic seasonings from purveyors like Frontier Co-op, which practices sustainable sourcing, so that you know you’re giving guests quality, organic seasonings. Organic, sustainably sourced food gifts can be creative, fun and useful wedding favors and gifts – and a great way to show Mother Nature some love while you’re celebrating your own love story. To learn more about sustainably sourced spices and seasonings, visit www. frontiercoop.com.

Swiss Maid Bakeries create edible works of art By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

Cake has been known to be a part of wedding celebrations from as far back as the Roman Empire and possibly even earlier. These early versions of the wedding cake were not the beautifully crafted cakes that we find today but more basic bread cakes that were broken over the bride’s head to ensure a happy marriage and fertility. In 17th century England, the wedding cake became a sweet pie, such as quince, where the bride would hide a glass ring. The bridesmaids would each have a piece of the pie and whoever found the ring was said to be the next to marry – much as today’s custom of catching the bouquet. In the 19th century, Queen Victoria was reported to have a cake exquisitely decorated more in the style of cakes we see today. Hers however, was said to weigh 300 pounds. Today wedding cakes are a work of art individually crafted and designed to enhance the style of the wedding or the interests of the couple being married. A recent afternoon visit with Laura Stricker of Swiss Maid Bakeries provided quite an education in modern cake making. Swiss Maid has two locations: 104 E. Brainard St., Harvard, Ill.; and 122 N. Benton St., (on the square) in Woodstock, Ill.. The Swiss Maid Bakeries have a long tradition of authentic European style pastries, breads, desserts and unique and elegant wedding cakes. Their history in the baking business in the United States, goes back to the 1920s when two families from Switzerland opened bakeries near North Avenue in Chicago. The two families, the Planzers and the Strickers, would become more intertwined in the following years. In 1943, the Stricker family moved to Harvard and CONTINUED ON PAGE

purchased a bakery from R.J. Keeley. Six years later the Plazners purchased the bakery from the Strickers. One year later the families were united when their children, Shirley and Tony, married. It was Tony and Shirley Stricker who took over the bakery from the Planzers and named it Swiss Maid Bakery. They worked at the bakery for 20 years encouraging its growth. Their sons Kurt, Paul, and Eric became the owners of the bakery in 1987 but their partnership was short lived. Kurt left the business to pursue another career in 1999 and Eric passed away unexpectedly in 2005, leaving Paul to carry on. He was not to be alone for long as his son Jeremy attended Scottsdale Culinary Institute and returned to join the family business, making five generations of Stricker bakers. Paul’s other children have also worked at the bakery in various jobs. Wedding cake 101 Back in the mid 1900s, wedding cakes were pretty standard. Two, three, or four round tiers, depending on the size of the wedding with colored flowers made of icing to match the bridal party’s color scheme. A bride and groom – usually of plastic in those early days – adorned the top of the cake. “Today’s wedding cakes are unique and original. Anything goes,” said Laura Stricker. Laura is Paul’s wife and has been an active partner in running the Woodstock retail store and serving as wedding cake consultant for more than nine years. Laura went on to explain that wedding cakes are as unique as the couple marrying. “We have designed cakes that express interests of the couple, such as a Harley Davidson motif, a sand castle, and even a dragon,” Laura said. “If you have a photo of what you would like, bring it in and we can make it.” Wedding cakes can be round or square or a combination of round and square layers to give the cake its own unique look. Swiss Maid Bakery uses only quality ingredients for baking and decorating. Each cake is decorated with butter cream frosting, which not only looks good but also tastes good. Some bakers use fondant because it holds up well for late pictures but it just isn’t tasty. The cake itself can be any flavor and the fillings come in many different flavors. “Today one of the most popular looks is shabby chic and vintage,” Laura said. “The vintage-looking scrolls on the cake paired with an unusual decorative accent like burlap. Others prefer the opposite look, a cake with lots of bling.” Whatever the desired style, Swiss Maid can create the cake of your dreams. Choices galore There are many choices today for topping the cake. Fresh flowers can decorate the

entire cake. They may be cascading down a single side or placed intermittently around the cake. Some prefer flowers on the top of the cake and some prefer a traditional cake topper of the bride and groom. If the choice is the latter, there are many different styles of the bride and groom cake toppers to fit different styles. Elegant or whimsical there is one that will please you. Groom’s cakes were popular in the mid 1900s and have again returned. Many people likely recall weddings in the 80s where the groom’s cake was always chocolate while the wedding cake was white. Today either cake can be any flavor. Groom’s cakes are again popular and can be made in a whimsical manner perhaps with the logo of his favorite sports team or automobile. Swiss Maid offers quality chocolate butter cream, plain butter cream, butter cream flavored with one of their 14 different flavors or ganache. The cakes will be accented with butter cream flowers, sugar flowers, or fresh flowers.

All of the baking is handled at the Harvard facility where the ovens are working 24 hours a day. The decorating is the work of two long-time employees, Terri and Sharon, who have over 25 years experience in the field. Their creativity and fine attention to detail can be seen in the finished products. Today’s wedding cake is not the only eye catching sweet at many of today’s weddings. Cupcake towers, filled with fancy cupcakes, displayed on a tiered pedestal are making an appearance at many weddings. The towers are often the highlight of the sweets table with other items displayed around its base. The elegant sweets table filled with decorated cookies, cake pops, mini desserts, pretzel rods and mini turtle candies all made in house are beautifully displayed and quickly eaten. Cookies come in many shapes but the favorite wedding cookies are the ones in the shapes of a bridal dress and the tuxedoCONTINUED ON PAGE

baked goods. Swiss Maid is also active in the community. Each day as the bakery closes, they donate all of that day’s baked goods that have not sold, to various charitable groups in the area. These include the Woodstock Bible Church, community outreach programs, military groups, food pantries, and other groups in need. For those who are not in the market for a wedding cake, there is still reason to visit Swiss Maid Bakeries. The business carries a full line of European pastries, cakes, Danish tortes, pies, and cookies. And don’t forget the breads – sixgrain, rye, white and a variety of others make even choosing a loaf of bread difficult. Swiss Maid is well known for its apple strudel. It is served in some local restaurants. Those who visit Swiss Maid often find it difficult to leave with just one item. It may take a while to choose from the great variety of freshly baked items. How to find a

L•I•M•O•U•S•I•N•E Every bride and groom will need his and her transportation from home to the wedding ceremony and reception. Although there are several options to get couples to and fro, many choose a limousine or another fancy rental car as the preferred mode of travel. It may seem like little work goes into renting a limo. Though transportation might be one of the more hands-off components of wedding planning, that does not make it any less important. After all, if something goes awry, you can be left stranded with no manner of getting to the wedding. It is important for you to get the best service and the right vehicle for the occasion, which requires some comparison shopping. The car service also will need some information from you. Here’s how to start. Initially, seek word-of-mouth recommendations, which can be the best way to narrow down potential limo companies. Ask others which business they used for their special events – be it weddings, proms, Sweet 16 parties or other important events. If you work at a company that often relies on hired cars for business meetings or transportation to the airport, you may already be familiar with a reliable service – and they might be familiar with you. Not all limousine services are the same. Price should not be your only method of comparison. Much like a hotel room or a meal at a restaurant, there may be different levels of service among companies. It’s important to compare apples to apples. Figure out a package that will work for you, including size of car, duration of time and any other special features, such as a stocked bar, and then compare this package among the different limo companies you’re considering. The right vehicle also can make all the difference – and may help you narrow down your choices among companies. For instance, a business might not have the model you want or that vehicle isn’t available the day of your wedding. Also, be sure there will be enough room and if there is trunk space for luggage for honeymoon essentials. Check whether there are certain add-ons, such as fuel surcharges or tolls that are not factored into the base price. Honeymooners

ARE OPTING FOR THE ROMANCE, ADVENTURE OF CRUISES There are 2.5 million weddings in the United States each year, and the wedding business is a $40 billion annual industry, including the ceremony, reception, bachelor (-ette) parties and honeymoon. Increasingly, newlyweds are opting for a cruise for a cost-effective and carefree honeymoon. About 5,000 weddings and vow renewals happen on cruises every year, and cruises now account for 15 percent of all honeymoons. The inclusive nature of a cruise is a leading factor in the decision. A cruise provides a week of great food, pampering and entertainment for about $2,500 or less per person. Most newlyweds say they prefer a week in a fun and sun destination.

That makes cruises doubly attractive, since they visit several ports and offer a selection of shore tours. Though the Hawaiian Islands remain the all-time favorite honeymoon destination, many newlyweds are choosing cruises in the Mediterranean and the Caribbean. And there’s no more romantic way to experience the wonders of the Mediterranean or Caribbean than a weeklong voyage aboard a tall ship. Star Clippers’ three sailing ships only carry up to 170 or 227 guests, and visit some of the world’s most exotic destinations. Aboard Star Clippers, newlyweds can experience the luxury of a private yacht while sailing to smaller lesser-known destinations big cruise ships can’t visit.

Star Clippers’ relaxed yet elegant shipboard atmosphere is the perfect antidote to months of wedding planning. Yet, the emphasis on beach time and water sports, and the array of softadventure excursions offered provide opportunities for couples to share new experiences as they start their life together. Whether it’s a fabulous honeymoon sailing through the Greek Isles, a barefoot wedding set on a Caribbean beach or a sunset vow-renewal ceremony performed by a ship’s captain, Star Clippers offers the romance of a true sailing experience. Simple savings

Money-saving wedding-planning tips for any budget Weddings can be expensive, and most brides and grooms need to establish a budget before they start planning the wedding so they can afford to get hitched. Many couples are now getting married later in life and paying most or all of the costs themselves, so it’s important to start budgeting sooner than later. The following tips will help you and your fiancé keep your costs down so you can stay within your wedding budget. They cover everything from the moment when you say, “Yes” to the second you say, “I do.” Set a long engagement There are benefits to having an engagement of a year or longer. First, it allows you to spread costs over several paychecks. For example, if you get engaged this spring, you can choose one month to put a down payment on the reception hall, and another month for purchasing the wedding dress and renting the tuxedo. A third month

could be used for purchasing honeymoon trip tickets, and a fourth month for the photographer’s down payment. During your engagement you can also start putting money into a savings account so you aren’t strapped for cash immediately following your wedding. Combine your resources A couple living in the same household can save hundreds of dollars monthly by combining expenses related to rent/ mortgage, utilities, groceries and even transportation. If you recently became engaged and are considering moving in together, calculate how much money you’ll be saving so you can apply those savings toward your wedding budget. During the moving process, you can save additional money. For example, when you combine your households, will you need two sets of dishes and furniture? Probably not. Perhaps you can even host a garage sale to sell the items you don’t

TAX TIPS for newly married couples In most parts of the country, the months of June, August, September and October are the most popular for weddings. Whether recently married or anxiously counting the days until you tie the knot, there are some important tax implications that you and your spouse can’t afford to overlook. “In between the flurry of wedding planning, dress shopping and bridal showers, few engaged couples stop to think about how getting married will affect their income taxes,” explained TaxAct spokesperson, Shaunna Morgan. “While it’s important to understand the tax consequences, keep in mind that you can still do your own taxes. TaxAct, a leading DIY tax solution, asks simple questions about life events like marriage to guide you through the tax implications and help you get all of your deductions to maximize your refund.”

Name changes Your name(s) and Social Security number(s) are critical elements of your tax return. Both identifiers must exactly match the information the Social Security Administration has on file. That means if you legally change your name after you get married, the SSA needs to know about it. To get a Social Security card with your new name, you’ll need to provide proof of identity, such as a marriage certificate, fill out an application and either mail it or deliver it in person to your local SSA office. You’ll want to do this long before you file your income tax return. New address If you’re moving, remember to report your new address to the Internal Revenue Service. The fastest way to make the

change is to complete Form 8822 available on the agency website at www.irs.gov. New filing status Once you’ve said, “I do,” you’ll have the option to claim one of two filing statuses on your tax return – married filing jointly or married filing separately. If you and your spouse each earn an income, you might consider running the numbers to determine if you have a lower combined tax by filing one way versus the other. Some tax software packages do the calculations for you so it’s easier to make an informed decision when selecting a filing status. TaxAct Deluxe, for example, gives users a Joint vs. Separate Analysis report that does all the calculations so you can see your estimated refund amounts CONTINUED ON PAGE

TAX TIPS for each filing status. For many couples, married filing jointly results in lower income tax liability. Keep in mind that no matter when in the year you get married, you are considered married for the full year. Even if your big day is Dec. 31, you will have a married status in the eyes of the IRS for the entirety of that tax year. Changing your tax withholding Any time you have a life change you should revisit your Form W-4. Getting married is definitely one of those times. If both you and your spouse work, you’ll likely have a higher combined income, which may put you into a higher tax

bracket. In order to ensure the right amount of tax is withheld from your paycheck, you’ll want to update your Form W-4 to ensure you aren’t having too much or too little tax withheld. Affordable Care Act premium tax credit If you or your spouse receive health insurance through a government-sponsored marketplace and receive advance payments of the premium tax credit to help offset the cost of your premiums, you’ll want to review your coverage after the wedding, and notify the marketplace of your newly married status.

Reporting this change will help you avoid having too much or too little premium assistance paid and ultimately, help you steer clear of owing additional money or getting a small refund when you file your taxes. If you elect to keep your coverage “as is,” separate from your spouse, or wish to add your spouse to your coverage, you should notify the marketplace of your special changes in coverage. If you elect to go under your spouse’s health plan, be sure to cancel your marketplace coverage. For more information about the tax impact of marriage, visit www.irs.gov and www.taxact.com/taxinfo.
