Ehlen challenges herself in classroom, on track

Sibley will take his talents to Alabama By Jennifer Eisenbart EDITOR

The Burlington High School salutatorian of the Class of 2015 is Nathaniel Sibley. Sibley, the son of Jeff and Kim Sibley, will attend the University of Alabama in Tuscaloosa in the fall. “I received full tuition scholarship to go there, and I will have the opportunity to be in the honors college,” Sibley said. “With the honors college, I’ll be able to participate in (specific) community service projects.” Sibley has a 4.28 grade-point average. “I’ve always enjoyed reading and writing,” Sibley said. “When I was younger, I was good in school, and I liked it. I’ve always strived to do the best that I can.” Sibley has been involved with four years of cross country and basketball at BHS, as well as spending his freshman and sophomore years playing baseball and his junior and senior years

participating in track and field. He also took part in Academic Decathlon all four years, as well at Academic Bowl – similar to Academic Decathlon in that students test and compete against each other academically, but within the Southern Lakes Conference. Sibley said one of his favorite memories in high school was honoring Mark Taylor – the father of fellow senior Teagan Taylor – after Mark died of cancer in December of 2013. The basketball team honored Mark Taylor at a game. “The crowd was so packed,” he said “I hit a layup with like five seconds left, and we ended up winning by two. “It was a great game to be a part of.” Because BHS has co-valedictorians in Eric Beets and Brittany Ehlen, Sibley will not give a salutatorian speech. He will, however, participate in other parts of the ceremony.

Young pilot sees blue skies in his future By Jennifer Eisenbart EDITOR

The Burlington High School covaledictorian of the Class of 2015 is Eric Beets. Beets, the son of Scott and Melody Beets, plans to attend the University of Wisconsin-Madison, where he will major in computer science. “I’ve been interested in computers ever since I was little,” explained Beets. “It just seemed like the logical step. I haven’t decided what I want to do with it after college, but I think I’d like to go into web development.” Beets achieved a 4.31 grade-point average while at BHS. He has posted numerous A-plus grades throughout high school, and has taken advanced placement classes, including statistics and calculus. Beets has a number of extra-curricular activities, including three years with the BHS student leadership group DRIVEN.

The Burlington High School covaledictorian of the Class of 2015 is Brittany Ehlen. Ehlen, the daughter of John and Jennifer Ehlen, plans to attend the University of WisconsinPlatteville, where she will major in Brittany Ehlen engineering. “Mainly, just math and science, I became really interested in,” she said about choosing engineering. “Math just kind of comes easy to me, and science. I took AP chemistry and it was really challenging. “The challenge was fun for me,” she added. Ehlen compiled a 4.31 grade-point average while at BHS. She was a member of the track and field and cross country teams throughout high school. One of her best memories of high school was the girls cross country team qualifying for the WIAA Division 1 state meet as a junior. Burlington finished 18th as a team, and Ehlen was Burlington’s No. 3 runner with a time of 16 minutes, 10.32 seconds. “Our team was really close that year,” Ehlen explained. “Just making it as a team was a lot more worthwhile than making it as an individual.” What motivated her for long distance races throughout high school was the chance to be better. She said the sport requires “a lot of mental toughness.” “Just kind of wanting to be my best and challenging myself,” she said. “Just to go farther.” Ehlen was also a member of the Future Farmers of America and the National Honor Society while at BHS. She participated in Academic Decathlon, was a summer school aid at Waller School and participated in Life Teen Group and 4-H. Ehlen wants to speak about her – and her classmates’ – experiences in high school.
