• LAKE COUNTY continued from page 11 LAKE COUNTRY FOREST PRESERVES

The Lake Country Forest Preserves have miles of hiking trails for the fall and come wintertime, the preserve hosts cross-county skiers and snowmobilers. Preserve cross-county ski trails are open 6:30 a.m. to sunset, daily. Extended hours are available during daylight savings time along solar lighted trails at Old School in Libertyville and along a section of the Millennium Trail in Wauconda. The illuminated trails and adjacent parking lots remain open after sunset until 9 p.m., daily, early November–early March. When conditions allow, skiers can use the dedicated equestrian trails at Lakewood and Raven Glen and most forest preserve hiking trails, except at the Ryerson Conservation Area in Riverwoods. A 4-inch snow base is required at Ryerson in order to protect sensitive habitat at this Illinois Dedicated Nature Preserve site. Groomed trails are available at the Lakewood Winter Sports Area, Old School, and along the Des Plaines River Trail between Old School and the Wright Woods Canoe Launch on Route 60. Grooming is typically done two days after a large snow. Embrace winter by snowmobiling scenic, snow-capped trails at forest preserves throughout Lake County. Snowmobilers can use nearly 24 miles of designated trails within the preserves, many of which connect to other area snowmobile trails. A 4-inch snow base and frozen ground are required to open snowmobile trails. These trails are groomed and patrolled by staff and volunteers. In many preserves, snowmobile trails are routed to protect wildlife and sensitive natural areas. Snowmobilers should use caution and watch for trail route signs along all preserve snowmobile trails.

When conditions allow, snowmobile trails are open 6:30 a.m. to 11 p.m., Sunday through Thursday; and 6:30 a.m. to midnight on Fridays and Saturdays. The following snowmobile trailer parking lots are open extended hours for snowmobilers; all other lots close at dusk: • Van Patten Woods Canoe Launch

When you hear the words ‘walking dead,’ you may think of AMC’s hit zombie show “The Walking Dead,” but you don’t have to lack a pulse or crave human flesh to go throughout your life like a zombie. The debilitating effects of depression assault 15 million Americans these days. By 2020, it’s estimated that depression will become the second most common health problem in the world. But depression isn’t the only issue preventing adults from feeling content each day – perhaps it’s a stagnant job, poor health, a loss of faith or countless other factors. Author, comedian and keynote speaker Ken Davis was a member of the walking dead for years before he realized he was living an unfulfilled life – mentally, physically and spiritually. “This idea of living fully alive is not some thrill-seeking quest. It doesn’t require leaping from an airplane or riding bicycles at breakneck speeds or jumping a log cabin on skis,” Davis said. “I’ve done all that. What I longed for was to experience that sense of adventure in my everyday life. Shouldn’t we feel some of the excitement that comes from jumping off a fifty-foot cliff when we jump out of bed?” Ideally, yes. But as adults get caught up in the stressors of daily life – work, commuting, bills – it’s easy to lose sight of the many components that interact to form a meaningful, healthy life. “The very nature of the words ‘fully alive’ implies completeness,” Davis says. “We are physical, social, mental and spiritual beings. To ignore any aspect of our humanity is to be only partially alive. I’m not interested in partial life any more than I’m interested in partial plates or premature death.” Davis shared his epiphany and desire to reinvigorate life in his newest book, “Fully Alive: A Journey That Will Change Your Life.” Here’s a snapshot of the advice Davis offers to his readers: kick guilt to the curb, and experience real freedom; be active for an hour a day, and find ways to push your body to its limit several times in that hour; develop spirituality in your life, whether through prayer, meditation, reading, connecting with nature or attending a religious service; and focus on positive behaviors and goals, not problems and fears. Spreading good news t

urn on the TV, go online or stream music, and it may seem like there is no place for faith in our culture. People – especially young people – will share just about any detail of their personal lives, except when it comes to their faith. Many are reluctant or even embarrassed to share how their faith makes them who they are. Despite this trend, there are tens of millions of Americans who still value their faith tremendously, and they want to make faith more visible. Thanks to a fastgrowing social media movement (www. FaithCounts.net) people, regardless of their religion, are openly celebrating their faith – because they believe faith is a very good thing. How does faith improve the quality of life? Here are a few ways: • Faith inspires, empowers and comforts billions of people the world over, and that makes people of faith happier; • People and organizations are motivated by their faith to help millions of people every single day, in soup kitchens, hospitals, schools and homeless shelters; • People of faith live longer; • People of faith are more engaged in civic life; • People of faith are more likely to be law-abiding citizens; • People of faith are more generous and charitable; and • Faith has the power to add deep spiritual meaning and help people survive the most challenging times. And last but not least, a basic teaching of every major world religion asks that

While young adults are willing to post almost any aspect of their life on social media nowadays, sharing one’s faith is something many shy away from.

we treat others as we ourselves would want to be treated. If more people followed this Golden Rule, that alone would be a positive influence on society. And that’s reason enough to promote the value of faith. What does the future hold for faith in America? Nobody knows for sure, but those who value their faith can help push back against current trends by visiting www. FaithCounts.net and sharing with friends.

Mars Cheese Castle has been a favorite of travelers since 1947

d

riving along Interstate 94 travelers BY Sandra cannot help but notice the towering Landen Machaj 80-foot-high sign announcing the CORRESPONDENT famous Mars Cheese Castle. Located at the intersection of I-94 and Highway 142, this exit off I-94 has been called by some as “the cheese interchange.” But it is not only for cheese that travelers and local residents stop, it is for everything Wisconsin. The Mars Cheese Castle has been a familiar sight since 1947 although it has changed in appearance over the years. It is here that families have stopped to purchase their favorite cheese to take home or to give as gifts when they arrive at their destination. Others stop to enjoy a lunch of one of the store’s famous cheese sandwiches. Mario and Martha Ventura opened Mars Cheese Castle in 1947

TIPS

w

hile summer is all about sun, beaches and being on the water, autumn brings new types of outdoor fun. Cooler weather and colorful landscapes attract many to enjoy the outdoors during the season. But after the summer sun fades, it’s important to make sure you’re fully prepared to take on the new season. If you’re a fall recreation enthusiast, take some time to create a checklist of the items you’ll need to take care of before you dash off on your autumn adventures. Whether you’re planning a fall camping trip or simply hanging around at home, this season can be a bit unpredictable. Stay safe, comfortable and productive during the fall with these helpful tips:

TO STAY SAFE THIS FALL

Make a plan Fall is a busy season for everyone, so take a moment to map out your weeks and create a solid plan. You’re much more likely to fit in all your fun fall activities when you plan them according to your to-do list. From yard work to hunting trips, make a rough plan so you know exactly what you have going on each week.

Do your research If you’re going out and about this fall, educate yourself and become familiar with the local area. This will help you be aware of any surprises that might come up including poisonous plants, dangerous animals and bugs. It’s always a good idea to take a map and compass along, even if you will mostly be using a smart phone.

Gear up Before the season begins, take inventory of all your recreational gear. Is there anything that needs replacing or repair? From camping

supplies to leaf blowers, check all your autumn materials. Consider some new equipment to enhance your fall activities, like a Polaris RANGER Utility Vehicle. A utility vehicle not only helps you transport your recreational gear, but will help you tackle tough jobs in your yard.

is fully stocked to enjoy fires well into season, especially as the weather starts to cool down. If you’re headed out camping, pack your own wood so you don’t have to risk skipping out on a warm, toasty fire.

Watch the weather

Even if you’re not a hunter, make yourself visible when you’re outside or in an area where hunters frequent. Wear colors that stand out like bright fluorescent red, orange and green. Stay away from earth or animal colored outerwear. Don’t forget to protect everyone with you, even your dog. Follow these tips and you’ll be on your way to a safe and memorable fall season, free of injury and full of enjoyment. For more fun recreational inspiration, visit: polaris.com.

Fall weather changes quickly and each day is different from the next. Always check the forecast before you go out. Don’t be fooled by warm weather, as it can turn chilly at a moment’s notice. Layering is your best bet to withstand the unpredictable fall temperatures.

Stock up on firewood Once autumn hits, dry firewood can become scarce. Make sure your collection

in an unused schoolhouse on Highway 41 near Kenosha. Business grew until 1957 when the schoolhouse burned down. They moved the business to a former gasoline station just to the south while they built a new building for the Mars Cheese Castle. Over the years the business had many additions, a lunch counter, a supper club, and even a motel. Business was good with returning customers and many new ones who found the store along the well-traveled route. Then progress interfered. The interstate was going to be expanded and a change in the entrance to the frontage road would necessitate moving the store. So once again the Mars Cheese Castle needed a new building. Negotiating with the state, the owners worked out a deal that provided property to build a new Cheese Castle very close to their previous location that could be reached by the frontage road. The 80-foot-tall sign was no longer within code but special legislation allowed the owners to retain it as a landmark. The new castle opened in March 2011. With its turret and the appearance of a drawbridge, visitors get the feeling they are entering a real castle. But the real draw is the products available inside especially the cheese.

Fall 2015

The cheese room contains many types of cheese. There is a counter that is strictly Wisconsin-made cheese and another that displays a wide selection of imported cheese. The clerks are there to help customers find the cheese they came for and to offer suggestions of new varieties. They offer tastes of almost any cheese. Many different cheeses are on display with samples available. Whether you prefer a hard cheese or soft, mild or sharp there is a seemingly endless combination of options. Cheese spreads, and cheese in the shape of a cow, the State of Wisconsin, and even a mug of beer are cute novelties to take home to friends. Off the cheese room is the bar, which – just as in the older versions of the Castle – maintains a Rathskeller look. Visitors may stop in for a beer or treat themselves to the signature drink, a Bloody Mary. Lunch and dinner are also available. While there are many selections, the sandwiches come highly recommended. The Reuben begins with fresh rye bread and is piled with corned beef then covered with Wisconsin Swiss Cheese, piled with sauerkraut and gently toasted until the cheese melts. The grilled ham and cheese is a favorite as is a plain grilled cheese.

The Castle also serves a Wisconsin favorite, the bratwurst. The brats are made for the Cheese Castle by Usinger, a leading Wisconsin sausage maker. The specially made brats are available for purchase to prepare at home. If that’s not enough, the Castle offers a bakery featuring special desserts and breads. The favorite is the cheddar bread, made with real cheddar cheese swirled into it. Looking for a traditional Wisconsin souvenir? There are a large variety of items on display. The traditional cheesehead hat, shirts, mugs, and items decorated with a cow motif are all waiting along with many other strictly Wisconsin items. The Mars Cheese Castle remains a family-run business into the third generation, with each family member contributing to its continued growth. According to their website “What would grandfather do?” remains a guide to their management style. Mars Cheese Castle is at 2800 W. Frontage Road, Kenosha. Hours are Monday through Wednesday 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. and Thursday through Sunday 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. The telephone number is (855) 352-6277 or visit them online at www. marscheese.com

FIVE OUTDOOR PROJECTS that will add value to your home

Everyone wants a great outdoor space, but backyard projects can be a lot of work – and in many cases, a lot of money. So it just makes sense to choose projects that will enhance your quality of living for summers to come as well as yield a great return on investment. Here, then, are five value-building outdoor projects that pay off in more ways than one. Add a wood deck Decks are great additions for multiple reasons. They expand your living space outside, creating a useful link between interior and exterior spaces. Wood decks also offer one of the highest returns on investment of any home improvement project. In fact, a wood deck will recoup more than 80 percent of its construction cost when you sell your home, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report. Composite decking, in comparison, comes up short in terms of ROI. A deck constructed of Western Red Cedar benefits from the lumber’s natural rot resistance, low maintenance requirements (you can stain it or let it weather naturally) and its inherent beauty. What’s more, Real Cedar lumber comes from certified sustainable forests, so you can feel good about your deck’s environmental impact. Visit www.realcedar.com to learn more. Update your landscape lighting Lighting outdoor areas once required lots of wiring and professional installation, but advances in solar lighting efficiency and brilliance have made landscape lighting easy. From uplights that illuminate trees and architectural features, to light strands that provide visual delineation of stairs and railings, a variety of solar lighting options are available. Installation is often as simple as putting a stake in the ground. Plus, it’s cost-effective. True, you may need to make an initial investment in quality solar lights, but you’ll save in the long run on electricity. Also, doesn’t the idea of a warmly lit backyard space just seem more inviting? Define your seating area Creating an outdoor room that feels like an extension of your home is a win-win. It increases the square footage of your living Fall 2015

space, which in turn, increases the value of your property. Of course, choosing the right material is paramount in terms of maximizing your investment. Whether you’re designing a fully loaded, outdoor kitchen/dining area or simply installing a pergola with some built-in benches, you need beautiful highperformance products. With that in mind, your best bet is a strong versatile wood such as Western Red Cedar. It’s pitch and resin-free, so it readily accepts and holds a variety of finishes. Or for an ultra-low maintenance option, you can let cedar weather naturally to a graceful silvery patina. Build a fire pit Right now, fire pits are the “hottest” thing in landscaping (pun intended). Landscape architects also cite a fire pit as an outdoor improvement that’s in high demand. That’s because they’re great for enhancing key areas and creating a sense of place, which in turn, adds value to your home. They can be both practical – warming an outdoor space on chilly fall evenings – and Catch all the

fun. Installing one is relatively easy, too. You can find plenty of design ideas, complete with building instructions, with a simple online search. Be sure to carefully consider where you locate your fire pit, keeping safety in mind. Incorporate raised planters Gardening is a popular outdoor pastime, and building raised planters or beds can make it easier to enjoy a variety of vegetables and flowers throughout the growing season. Planting in raised beds – instead of directly in the ground – affords you greater control over soil quality, moisture and pests. Plus, tending raised beds is easier on the back. For a longer-term investment, choose a durable, naturally rot-resistant material, such as Western Red Cedar. This will ensure your beds are in good shape from season to season. And according to many home renovation experts, it’s little landscaping touches like this that can add substantial value to your home. For more outdoor ideas, free building plans, and information on Western Red Cedar, visit www.realcedar.com. (BPT)

Fall 2015

HEAT YOUR HOME without wasting energy this season

If you’re interested in living a greener lifestyle, perhaps you’re already trying to reduce your energy usage as much as possible. Maybe you ride your bike to work, unplug your electronics when they’re not in use, use fans during warm weather and avoid wasting water. Saving energy can get more difficult, however, when the seasons change and colder weather sets in. Heat is a primary source of energy usage. In fact, research from Tulikivi, the world’s largest manufacturer of heat-retaining fireplaces, shows that 52 percent of a home’s annual energy consumption is allocated to heat. Now is the time to think about reducing your energy usage during the winter. Here are some ideas that will help you enjoy a warm, cozy home while saving both money and energy.

Heat more efficiently

A crackling fire makes for more than just a pleasurable experience; it can also be an energy-efficient heating source. Fireplaces from Tulikivi help heat your home long after the fire goes out. Tulikivi fireplaces are built from soapstone, which

has better thermal conductivity compared to other materials because of its dense structure and mineral composition. For homeowners, this means once you start a fire in your fireplace, the soapstone will store heat in its thermal mass, allowing a two-hour burn to radiate heat for up to 24 hours. This lets you enjoy the clean, comfortable, cost-saving warmth without using additional energy. You can learn more about Tulikivi, the recycled materials used in its manufacturing process, the clean combustion of its masonry heaters and its commitment to sustainability at Tulikivi.us.

Close the drafts

One of the best ways to improve your energy efficiency is to reduce your energy waste. Window cracks and door drafts allow warm air to escape, which means you’re leaking both energy and money. Seal those areas by using caulk to shore up any drafty windows and put plastic wrap over the window surface to keep out the chill. For the door jambs, you can purchase a door stopper to plug the gap or you can use a towel at the base to block the

opening. Try to close off the bottom of any exterior door, particularly the doors you seldom use.

Run efficiently

When you’re not using your fireplace, it’s good to know your backup heating options are operating efficiently. Have your furnace inspected routinely and make sure you change the filter each month. You should also invest in a smart thermostat. This technology allows you to set the temperature of your home for different times of the day so you can lower it when you’re sleeping or away. The calendar option means you can program your home’s temperatures ensuring you never waste energy. Although it’s still nice outside, colder temperatures are on their way. That doesn’t mean you have to sacrifice your green lifestyle when you cheeks turn red. By using the tips above, you’ll still enjoy the same warmth and comfort without the additional environmental impact. To learn more about Tulikivi, visit Tulikivi. us or find them on Facebook and Twitter. (BPT)

Homeowners looking to reduce heating costs this winter should start considering their options now, before the cold weather hits. A new fireplace might be the solution. FILE PHOTO Catch All the Action
