While the area is perhaps best known for its lakes, the large amount of land that has been retained for outdoor recreational activities also draws vacationers.

One of these areas is the Chain O’ Lakes State Park which is bordered by Wilmot Road and Highway 173 between Antioch and Richmond.

In 1946 the State of Illinois purchased 840 acres of undeveloped land to form the Chain O’ Lakes State Park. The land was adjacent to the original Chain O’ Lakes Conservation Camp which became the Chain O’ Lakes Conservation Area in 1930.

This land was incorporated into the state park in 1957.

Further growth occurred in 1969 when the Department of Conservation purchased the Stevens Farm. The Stevens family had a history of ownership dating back to 1843 when it was received by the family under a land grant.

Today the state park, which borders three lakes of the Chain O’ Lakes – Lake Catch all the

Marie, Nippersink Lake, Grass Lake – and the Fox River consists of 2,793 acres with an adjoining 3,230 acre conservation area.

In addition there is a 44-acre lake within the park’s boundaries.

This park offers a wide variety of outdoor activities.

From the open lands to the canopies formed by the trees, the beauty of nature comes to the forefront during a drive along the park’s picturesque, winding roads.

A favorite park activity is camping.

Camping at Chain O’ Lakes can be as rustic or as high-end as one wishes. The park provides a Class A campground with 150 sites. This area includes flush toilets, electricity and shower facilities. For the more adventurous there are 3 Class B campgrounds with an additional 87 sites, which have fewer amenities.

The park also offers Rent a Camp units which provide a tent or cabin and the basics to get novice campers through their first experience.

Even for those who are not interested in sleeping in the park, there are many daytime activities. Bring a boat and launch Fall 2016

There is no cost to launch a boat at Chain O’ Lakes State Park. The park borders three of the chain’s lakes and the Fox River and also has a 44-acre lake within its boundaries.

There is no charge to use the boat launch but for those planning to enter the lakes in the Chain, the Fox Waterway Management Agency charges a user fee. Stickers are available for purchase at the park concession near the boat launch.

Canoes and kayaks are available to rent in Catfish Cove adjacent to the concession stand.

There are four trails for walking, hiking, or bicycling. Each is less than two miles in length. The trails are lined with a variety of trees including oak, hickory, cherry, birch, sumac and spruce. While bicycle riding is allowed on the trail, riders are cautioned to be wary of hikers.

Visitors will also likely encounter wildlife, from nesting birds in the native prairies to a variety of woodland animals including deer, rabbits, ground squirrels, chipmunks, mink.

More than 200 species of birds have been identified in the park. Visitors are invited to pick up a checklist in the office to tally how many can be discovered.

The park offers seven picnic areas, which are set off the road. They are complete with tables, grills, water fountains and toilets. Several of the areas have playground equipment. Three of the picnic areas have shelters and can be reserved for a family reunion or other group picnics.

One of the unique amenities found in the park is the riding stable. Here horses can be rented for a guided ride through the park. Wagon rides can be arranged for groups with advance notice. The horse rental concession is open daily from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

The Pike Marsh North picnic area has a special ¼-mile hiking trail that is accessible by people with disabilities.

When the temperature falls, ice skating and ice fishing are popular activities. When snow is sufficient, the trails are open for cross country skiers.

The park is open seven days a week from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. in summer and from 8 a.m. to sunset in winter.

Local Yacht Club has a proud history

In the late 1800s, visions of boats sailing across the lakes of the Chain O’ Lakes, with their white sails billowing, were a common sight. The speed of the boats was dependent on both the strength and the direction of the winds and the skill of the sailor manipulating the sails.

Sailors were kindred spirits so it was not surprising that many of these groups, often weekend sailors, who came to their summer homes on the chain, would form sailing or yacht clubs. These clubs became centers of sailing competition and social activities.

One of the very active Yacht Clubs was the Pistakee Yacht Club founded in 1897 by a group of Pistakee residents headed by Henry L. Hertz. The Hertz home located on a section of Pistakee Lake known as Pistakee Bay became the center of yachting activities including races.

When formally incorporated in 1899, 86 members officially joined paying a $5 initiation fee and $5 annual dues. Since

the majority of members were officials of Cook County, it is not surprising that winter membership and director’s meetings were held in Chicago usually at the Union or LaSalle Hotels.

A clubhouse became the next item on the yacht club’s agenda. On a piece of property – which today is still the home of the Pistakee Yacht Club – owned by Mary P. Hertz, wife of Henry, a clubhouse was built. It was used as a social gathering place in the summer including a dance pavilion where members and their spouses would gather after a day on the water. In the winter, it stored members’ sailboats.

Fundraisers such as dances and men’s smokers, popular in the early 1900s, helped pay off the club’s debt. In spite of fundraising efforts the club still owed the Hertz family for the purchase of the land.

A Pistakee County Fair was held on Aug. 24, 1910, on the Yacht Club’s grounds to raise the funds needed. It included wrestling matches, dice games and slot machines. Dog shows and cattle and fish exhibits were present to entertain the fairgoers. The fair raised $2,500, Catch all the

The prosperity of the club was short lived as interest in sailing decreased during World War I and the clubhouse fell into disrepair.

After the return of soldiers from the war, interest in sailing resumed and the yacht club again grew and prospered.

The Pistakee Yacht Club was a charter member of the Inland Lake Yachting Association, which was formed in 1898.

Together with 16 yacht clubs from Illinois and Wisconsin they formed the group of original members. The association set rules and standards for races and even designated that only one yacht per member club could be entered in the annual association regatta, causing a break in its membership and the formation of a new organization, the Northwestern Yachting Association, in 1908. Some of the clubs, including the Pistakee Yacht Club, maintained membership in both associations.

hat today is known as Fox Lake has evolved from the area that was once part of the Wisconsin Glacier. The village itself has developed on a piece of land originally known as Nippersink Point and is surrounded by three of the major lakes of the Chain O’ Lakes – Fox, Nippersink, and Pistakee.

Although first explored in the 17th Century by French explorers Marquette and Joliet, growth did not occur in the area until the late 1800s. The lack of roads discouraged the arrival of visitors and possible residents.

With the arrival of the train to McHenry in 1854, it became much easier. Travelers would arrive in McHenry, be transported from the train station to the banks of the Fox River, where steam launches, such as the Gladene, would transfer them to the Lakes.

Some visitors came to see the lotus beds in Grass Lake and others headed for the various lakes along the chain to enjoy their days on the water.

Fish and waterfowl were plentiful in the Chain O’ Lakes in those days and just as the semi nomadic Native American tribes, who lived in the area, the new visitors spent their days hunting and fishing. It was not long before visitors began to engage in other waterfront activities such as sailing, and swimming.

Since Dreams for Kids partnered with the Twin Lakes Aquanuts in an Adaptive Ski program 16 years ago, the annual event has opened windows of opportunity for children with special needs, and continued to grow entering its 17th year this summer.

About 150 children and their families attended the event held on Lake Mary, in Twin Lakes, Wis., July 28.

Dreams for Kids, an organization founded in 1989 by Tom Tuohy, looks to brighten the lives of children struggling with a variety of disabilities.

“In the first year, we had one event and one activity,” said Tuohy. “This year, we had fishing, kayaking and canoeing.”

The program, he added, helps not only children with special needs, but entire families.

“It has evolved over the years and it has brought more young people into it,” Tuohy said. “It is giving them more opportunities.”

According to Dave Lawless, Director of Extreme Recess, about 55 of the 150 were Catch all the

children with special needs.

Family involvement has made dreams possible for the children.

“It gives those something they have never experienced before and with their families,” Tuohy said. “This changes their lives, we have been told by families that this moment has been magical.”

Benefits extend beyond children and their families, but also to members of the Aquanuts squad, including incoming Wilmot Union High School senior Jenna Meyer.

Meyer, an Aquanut for about 12 years, states the expressions on the faces of special needs children and their families are rewarding enough.

“Seeing the people and the smile on their faces – they don’t get to experience something like this,” Meyer said. “Seeing how happy they are feels really good.”

The adaptive ski event extends beyond Lake Mary, however, fostering long-term friendships and academic improvement in the classroom.

“For those that have come back, their grades have gone up, and made friends for the first time,” Tuohy said.

each weekend members of the local yacht clubs participated in the regattas held at the local clubs. Regattas are composed of a series of boat races. A special Regatta called the Blue Chip Regatta was started at the Pistakee Yacht Club in 1960, the work of member John Loose. The Blue Chip was originally limited to the very best boaters in their class based on current season’s performance. The Blue Chip Regatta continues to be held each year, but is no longer held at Pistakee but at the Pewaukee Yacht Club in Wisconsin.

Life on Pistakee during the 1950s and ’60s included sailing and other water activities during the day and dinners and dances at the yacht club in the evening. Just as today in the Chain O’ Lakes community, lake activities dominated the summer.

Today there are fewer white sails seen on the Chain O’ Lakes than before as speedboats have become more popular. But not everyone has given up on sailboats. For years the yacht club held a sailing school to introduce children and other adults to the sport.

While not officially a part of the yacht club, the school came about thanks to several members who were concerned at the decreasing interest in sailing. The Community Sailing School of Pistakee offers instruction in sailing to children and adults. With new equipment and competent instructors, the sailing school holds classes at the Pistakee Yacht Club.

Today the Pistakee Yacht Club continues to stand on the shores of Pistakee although membership is much smaller than in days of old. It is no longer the hub of weekend races but perhaps with the sailing school encouraging more new sailors to the sport interest in sailing on Pistakee will grow.

When a small station was built on the eastern section of Nippersink Point, even more visitors had easier access to the Chain O’ Lakes area. Fox Lake quickly became the center for the vacationing public.

Cabins were built along the shores of the lakes to house the visitors who arrived for the summer to enjoy a respite from the hot and crowded city of Chicago. Some arrived for the day or the weekend and others spent the whole summer. The village is said to have had about 50 hotels at its peak to house the visitors.

VILLAGE INCORPORATES

The Village of Fox Lake was incorporated on Dec. 15, 1906. The road to incorporation was led by the resort owners of the area. At this time the lakes area was known for unlicensed gambling and alcohol sales. The Lake County leaders who were known to live mostly in the more populated areas of the county along Lake Michigan, ordered raids resulting in fines to the resorts which benefitted the county coffers.

After incorporation the new government did not place many restrictions on the resorts and gambling flourished along with disregard for the prohibition of liquor. Summer visitors enjoyed these activities along with swimming and boating on the lakes. It is estimated that the summer population of the area was as high as 20,000.

There was a constant war between mafia groups to control the alcohol and gambling trades and many Chicago gangsters were spotted in the Chain O’ Lakes area. On June 1, 1930, three men known to be anti-Capone were killed by a spray of machine gun fire at the Manning Hotel. Al Capone is

said to have spent his time in the area especially at the Mineola Hotel.

According to the U.S. Census Bureau, Fox Lake had a permanent population of 400 residents in 1910.

Year-round population remained low through the 1920s. The population surged in the 1930s to 880. Many people were forced to turn their summer cottages into year-round homes as they lost their city homes and jobs due to the Great Depression. By 1940 the permanent population of Fox Lake had dropped to 110 as many of the men left to fight World War II.

A SECOND BOOM

After the end of World War II, the returning servicemen found Fox Lake to be a place where they could purchase affordable housing. With train transportation to Chicago and the improvement of roads in the area, Fox Lake became a commuter community for families. Highway 12 became the major highway through Fox Lake. By 1950 the permanent population had grown to 2,288.

Today Fox Lake is known as the heart of the Chain O’ Lakes. It is a vibrant community of over 10,000 permanent residents and an influx of summertime visitors enjoying the pleasure of the lakes. More than 28,000 boats are registered on the Chain making boat traffic, especially on weekends, very busy.

The downtown area of Fox Lake includes restaurants accessible by boat or automobile, shopping, movie theaters and it is home of many boat sales and service venues.

The downtown railroad station provides fast transportation from Fox Lake to Chicago.

Fox Lake has maintained its place as the “Heart of the Chain O’ Lakes” as it has grown along Nippersink Point.

Park visitors asked to remove trash, stay on trails, refrain from defacing natural features

The Illinois Department of Natural Resources is appealing to Illinois State Park visitors to help park staff keep our parks clean and protect their unique natural features. Illinois State Parks receive millions of visits each year, and those visitors can tax the natural resources found within our parks and stretch park staff to the limit.

Park visitors carrying water bottles, drink cups, food or other items should pack out those items when leaving the park as trash barrels are generally not available on trails. Diapers and other waste should be disposed of properly.

“Our Illinois State Parks are economic drivers for the communities they serve,” said DNR Director Wayne Rosenthal. “Please help us maintain them for future generations by removing your trash, staying on trails and not defacing natural features.”

A new attraction tucked away on 75 acres just outside of Lake Geneva is taking the idea of a traditional zoo and flipping it on its head.

Safari Lake Geneva Founder and Owner “Jungle” Jay Christie said the idea is to let the animals run free, while in a sense, “confining” their human visitors.

Christie previously served as the Racine Zoological Society president and CEO for more than 16 years, stepping away in 2014 to pursue his dream of starting a safari park.

aboard a wagon and are taken on an hour long tour of the property, giving them an up close and personal view, not to mention several close encounters and opportunities to feed the different species of animals that roam freely around the property.

While the park features about a dozen different species of animals, representing five of the world’s continents, Christie said the plan is to have more than six-dozen species, representing six continents.

“We probably won’t have Antarctica represented any time soon,” Christie joked.

All species at Safari Lake Geneva are herbivores, meaning they do not eat meat and are grazing animals.

“So, we haven’t replicated the full circle of life that you’d maybe see on a real African safari, but we think that we can make up for it by the fact that you get to approach these animals much closer than you would on any safari,” he said.

Christie said animals at the park have come from licensed zoological facilities and institutions from western Wisconsin and eastern Minnesota, meaning Wisconsin winters isn’t something the animals have never experienced.

Currently, and likely for the short to medium term according to Christie, the park’s largest animal is the Bull American Bison, which roamed American prairies 200 years ago. The park’s first animal, which arrived Catch all the

about four months ago, was an African Bullfrog.

“It all started with a frog,” Christie said.

Other species at this time include Nilgai Antelope, Watusi – a longhorned cattle native to Africa – Alpacas, Ostriches and Zebras, which had not yet been integrated with the rest of the animals as of last Friday, though Christie said they hope to soon.

Visitors to Safari Lake Geneva begin their journey at the reception area, from which they are led into an area styled like an African corral, where Christie said they will eventually be able to mingle with a variety of smaller animals that can be approached on foot, such as goats. The area also features a presentation stage where staff can bring out smaller animals that wouldn’t be practical to have running around for meet and greets.

From there, visitors climb aboard their tour through the property, which Christie said is devoted to the preservation of both rare and endangered species.

While the attraction features only a basic tour of the property at this time, Christie said there are plenty of ideas in the works to make the safari park even better for the future.

• SAFARI PARK from page 15 A seven-figure project at this time, likely eight-figures in the long run, Christie said what the park offers right now is really kind of just “the tip of ice berg.” Christie and his staff made 60 different site visits, primarily in Kenosha and Walworth counties, before settling on the Bloomfield property.

Tours at Safari Lake Geneva are by reservation only, which according to Christie provides visitors with a premium experience, eliminating long waits in lines and allowing them to arrive just in time for their tour. Of course, he said guests are allowed to arrive a little early or stay for a bit after their tour and mingle with animals in the corral.

Tours run daily, weather permitting, with the first tour leaving at 10 a.m. and the last at 5 p.m. The park will remain open through Oct. 31. In the event of inclement weather, tours can be rescheduled provided visitors contact the safari park prior to their scheduled tour.

Tours cost $24.95 for adults 16 and older, $14.95 for children between the ages of 3 and 15, and free for children 2 and younger.

Wisconsinites are lucky enough to live in a climate where winter sports play an important role in outdoor recreation. But, winter sports have their own set of safety risks.

In fact, nearly 50,000 children were treated in emergency departments in 2013 for injuries related to skiing, snowboarding and sledding. Learning about the risks and using proper safety equipment can help keep kids safe and having fun. The following is information provided by the Kohl’s Cares Grow Safe and Healthy Program that outlines some of these risks and proper equipment to help stay injury free.

Skiing

Downhill skiing is one of the most popular winter sports, but one that does carry risk of injury. Many injuries are the result of falls and collisions with stationery objects. Deaths are caused by injuries to the head and neck.

Here are a few tips to stay safe: • Always wear a winter helmet when skiing – rent or buy one that allows space for goggles and ventilation when skiing; • Rent or buy skis that are appropriate to the size and ability of the child, and have skis fitted by a professional; • Prevent leg injuries by checking to make sure bindings release when your child falls; • Make sure boots are comfortable, fit

properly and are snugly buckled to give proper foot and ankle support; and • Goggles are best to protect your eyes from harmful rays, cold, branches and other hazards.

Snowboarding

Snowboarding is the fastest growing winter sport in the United States. Injuries related to snowboarding are often to the upper extremities and ankles. Follow these tips for a safer experience: • Always wear a winter helmet when snowboarding; • All-mountain snowboards are best for beginners – a board’s length should be appropriate for the child’s height and ability; • Boots should be specific to snowboarding and laced tightly to provide proper foot and ankle support – do not use hiking or snow boots; • Broken wrists are common snowboard injuries. Wrist guards help protect from these injuries if a child falls; and • Goggles are best for overall eye protection.

Sledding

Anywhere there is a snowy hillside, you are likely to find people sledding. Injuries from sledding are common, and are most often caused by collisions with other

Injuries include: head and chest trauma, fractures and organ injury.

More than 30 percent of children hospitalized for a sledding injury suffered serious head injuries. Always wear a winter helmet when sledding.

The safest sleds are ones that can be steered by riders and have brakes. Tubes, saucers and toboggans cannot be steered and are harder to control. Good sleds are generally inexpensive and worth the investment.

Choose a safe hill with a long, flat area at the bottom for kids to glide and stop. Avoid hills that are too steep, end near a street or parking lot, pond, fences or other hazards.

Wear layers of warm winter clothing, but leave the scarf at home. Scarves can get caught in a sled and cause choking or strangulation.

Unintentional or accidental injury remains the leading cause of death in children ages 18 and younger in the United States. Stage Stop gets ready to re-open Jan. 15 extends legacy to 169 years Jason Arndt

ustomers of Wilmot Stage Stop can rejoice after the owners of the historic restaurant announced a Jan. 15, 2017, reopening date.

The 168-year-old restaurant at highways C and W in Wilmot, Wis., shut its doors July 29 in a stunning move. The owners cited extenuating circumstances involving management and staff turnover.

“The management changed hands over the years resulting in significant emotional instability for us, our employees, and customers,” the owner stated in an online post. “This situation left no alternative other than to close the doors immediately.”

Less than 24 hours later, owners Ron and Nancy Hackett conveyed via social media they had a change of heart, expressing gratitude to loyal customers for offering support.

“We sincerely apologize to all as we stop, reflect and re-evaluate,” the Hacketts said on the Stage Stop Facebook page July 30. “The overwhelming support that we have received the last two days is both heartwarming and inspiring. We now look forward to re-establishing our legacy.”

The legacy will continue, when they open their doors Jan. 15, the same opening date used by fourth-generation owners Rolland and Marian Winn.

“We are excited to announce the Wilmot Stage Stop re-opening date,” an Aug. 17 Facebook post stated. “The family has decided to let history repeat itself with our opening date.”

While the Hacketts prepare the historic three-story building, consisting of a restaurant and hoards of historic artifacts, customers can start submitting reservations Dec. 1.

Restaurant hours are Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 5 to 10 p.m., Fridays from 5 to 11 p.m. and 4 to 11 p.m. on Saturdays.

The business, considered the longest running tap in Wisconsin, has stayed within the same family for seven generations.

Since they opened in 1868, most of the building has remained unchanged, including the third floor where the owners have a hotel historically preserved to reflect the 1800’s.

“We look forward to continuing the family legacy as we enter our 169th year of business with all of you!” the post states.

This winter, when chairlifts begin to turn at Wilmot Mountain, skiers and snowboarders will be able to enjoy the $13 million worth of improvements made this summer by new owner Vail Resorts.

Marking the most significant one-time influx of capital improvements in Wilmot Mountain’s 79-year history, Vail Resorts is ensuring that the entire guest experience is re-imagined for the upcoming season, from new lifts and restaurants to expanded snowmaking and an enhanced beginner area and terrain park.

For $609, the Vail Resorts’ Epic Local Pass not only provides unlimited access all winter at Wilmot Mountain, but also at nine world-class resorts like Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge in Colorado, and Park City in Utah. However that price was only guaranteed until Sept. 5 and may have changed.

“Chicago and Milwaukee area skiers and snowboarders are the big winners this winter with a completely re-imagined experience at Wilmot Mountain and access to the most iconic mountain resorts out West,” said Taylor Ogilvie, general manager at Wilmot Mountain. “The Epic Local Pass is similarly priced to what Wilmot-only passes were in the past, plus it grants skiers access to world-class Fall 2016

skiing at Vail Resorts’ nine iconic western resorts, including Vail, Beaver Creek and Breckenridge in Colorado, and Park City in Utah.”

Vail Resorts has been busy this summer with $13 million in capital improvements at Wilmot Mountain that will encompass every aspect of the guest experience, from the terrain and lifts, to base area facilities and snowmaking technology.

The improvements currently underway to upgrade and modernize Wilmot Mountain include:

New lifts Three new four-person chairlifts are currently replacing existing lifts. Towers and chairs have arrived from Colorado and all tower and terminal footings have been poured. The towers are currently being erected and terminal steel is arriving at the resort daily.

These three new chairs, combined with a new high-speed rope tow in the terrain park and two new surface conveyor lifts in the beginner area, will increase uphill capacity by up to 45 percent, allowing skiers and snowboarders more time on the slopes.

Base area transformation The entire base lodge is being transformed, including the addition of 400 seats and upgrading the mountain dining offerings to accommodate more guests. In addition, the facility will be modernized to offer seating for families, groups and adults, including a new bar and Wi-Fi throughout the facility.

The Iron Kettle restaurant will be completely redesigned and will include a new lounge where parents will be able to watch their children ski and snowboard and enjoy a full-service bar and food service in an energized, yet comfortable, setting.

Fox Lake-Grant Township museum is a tangible link to the past Sandra Landen Machaj

History and heritage are important to any community. For many areas, especially for smaller communities, finding and preserving that history is often difficult.

Raising funds to establish a museum and finding enough volunteers to collect, research, catalogue and display the memorabilia is often a massive undertaking. As time moves forward, older members of the community often downsize and discard pertinent historical memorabilia. Some pass away before sharing their oral histories of earlier times.

It is often one or two people in the community who become concerned with the possibility of losing the community’s history and they begin to collect memorabilia from residents, often storing it in their own homes. The Fox Lake-Grant Township Historical Society was formed in this manner.

In the early days, Ruth Sutton was

one of those who worked with others to collect materials important to the history of the area. Their work culminated in the formation of the Fox Lake Area Historical Society in 1997. The name was later changed to the Fox Lake-Grant Township Historical Society.

The society’s goal was stated as “To research and preserve the history of the Village of Fox Lake, Grant Township, and adjacent Chain of Lakes areas of Lake and McHenry Counties in northeastern Illinois.” Organizers originally displayed their collections in a room at the Community Center in Fox Lake.

A museum is born

In 2003, an opportunity arrived when they were offered the former Grant Township Hall, which had been built in 1904. It was donated to the society by Grant Township with the stipulation that it would be used as a museum. And so it was.

On a recent afternoon, Society Vice President Ken Buchardt and Corresponding Secretary Virginia Sayles shared the history of their society and museum. While from the outside the museum appears as a somewhat plain, unassuming white building, once inside visitors find it is bursting with historical vignettes that bring the area’s history to life.

The building has been divided into themed displays including memorabilia from several local businesses. One prominent display is that of the Miller’s Drive In, the local Dog and Suds so popular in the 1950s and ’60s with both families and teenagers.

A mural by artist Cindy Yount graces the wall of one of the display rooms. The mural depicts the history of the area from its early inhabitants, the native Americans, through settlers developing farms and the growth of the Chain O’ Lakes as a recreational area spurred by the arrival of the train in Fox Lake in 1901.

In addition to compiling historical items for display, the society is involved in compiling histories of the families and early businesses of the area. Buchardt and Sayles expressed pride in the library with its many archival works including yearbooks from Grant Community High School since 1930. Photos and tapes

about local history, and census reports are available for research.

In the past, the museum has sponsored history programs for schools, scout troops and other organizations such as the Chamber of Commerce. Society members have also participated in producing a public access cable TV program focused on the history of the Fox Lake Volunteer Fire Department. They have organized historical displays in various community centers.

Each year the third-grade classes from Gavin Elementary School visit the museum and take a walk through the history of the area. Power Point programs have been presented at the library. The society currently has six Power Point programs including ones on hotels and resorts and others relating life in 1963 in Fox Lake

and a look at Dollar Lake to the Lakeland Plaza.

The museum is currently raffling an American Girl Doll. Three prizes will be awarded. The first prize will be the doll, second and third prizes will be American Girl Doll accessories. Tickets are available at the museum for $5 each. The raffle will be held Nov. 19 at the Historical Society meeting.

The society and museum welcomes both visitors and new members.

More than four miles of new snowmaking pipe and 56 new snowmaking guns have been ordered, including 30 low-energy fan tower guns, six portable fan guns and 20 air-water guns which will complement the refurbishment of existing snowmaking equipment.

Additionally, the snowmaking pump station will be modernized to increase water flow capacity, including a 500 horse-power variable frequency pump. To date, 75 percent of the snowmaking pipe has been installed and the new snowmaking guns have arrived, with the tower guns currently going up.

The learning terrain has been completely re-graded to be more accessible for teaching beginners and two new surface conveyor lifts will be arriving shortly for installation. Construction is also progressing on a dedicated and state-ofthe-art children’s ski and snowboard center adjacent to the learning terrain at the base of the ski area, featuring a playful open space for kids along with their own lunch and break room.

A new expanded terrain park will offer unique and innovative features designed and created by terrain park staff at Vail Resorts’ western resorts, as well as the addition of a new high-speed rope tow to enable skiers and snowboarders to spend more time in the terrain park. All grading of the terrain park is complete and the tow rope will be arriving at Wilmot for installation soon.

A brush with the big leagues Local baseball teams got a taste of the major leagues

“Take me out to the ball game,” written in 1906 continues to be sung at every major league and many minor league baseball games.

It was written by Jack Norworth and Albert von Tilzer and is the third most frequently sung song in the United States after “Happy Birthday” and “The Star Spangled Banner.” It is most popular as the seventh inning stretch song and has been sung by popular singers with great voices and some not so great singers.

Just as the song is so popular, so too is the game of baseball.

Baseball, which has been around since the early 1839s, is played and enjoyed by young and old alike. The major leagues began with eight teams in 1876 and now consist of 30 teams. But it isn’t only the major leagues that attract baseball players. Since the 1800s, local teams have played for their communities and worked hard to become the champion of their local league.

While baseball players dream of actually securing a spot on a major league roster, for most of them it remains a dream. In spite

Playing for pride

From the late 1800s, the local teams in Lake and McHenry counties were very active. They competed against each other hoping to win the first place trophy in their leagues. Community pride was at stake. Some players from the local high schools did make it to the major leagues. Some of them only lasted a short time in the majors but others were well known for their accomplishments in the majors.

Here are a few local players who made it to the majors.

• Chuck Hiller from Johnsburg had an outstanding career in the majors. As a member of the 1962 New York Giants, Hiller made history by becoming the first National League player to hit a grand slam home run in the World Series. This allowed the Giants to beat the Yankees 7-3 and win the World Series.

• Billy and Bobby Klaus were professional baseball players from Fox Lake. Billy played in the major leagues from 1952 to 1963, playing for several teams in his 11-year career. He batted left handed and threw right handed.

His brother, Bobby, had a much shorter major league career, playing for only two years, 1964 to 1965.

• Eric Eckenstahler was born in Waukegan but attended high school in Antioch.

After attending Illinois State University, he was drafted by the Detroit Tigers and played 27 games for the team in 2002 and 2003.

of being a player on a major league team, did have some experience against the major leaguers. They participated in a game with major league players thanks to a man who owned a summer home along the Fox River.

Well known in the baseball world as both a player and a team owner, Charles Comiskey was just as well known in the Chain O’ Lakes area as he was to his team, the Chicago White Sox. Thanks to Comiskey, a game was arranged for the McHenry White Sox to play against the Chicago White Sox in McHenry.

Legend has it that the Chicago team arrived by train early in the morning of Sept. 9, 1914, and were taken out to Pistakee Bay by boat – perhaps to tire the pro team out before the big game.

The Chicago White Sox in spite of their busy day won the game 13-1. There actually may have been more than one game played on various dates as the McHenry Plaindealer, the local newspaper, reported one in 1916.

The McHenry White Sox were not the only local team to play the Chicago White Sox. On Oct. 2, 1929, 250 spectators gathered in the Johnsburg Ball Park and paid $1 per person to watch the Chicago White Sox take on the McHenry County Champions, Johnsburg. Unfortunately, for the Johnsburg team, the Chicago White Sox won.

While none of these local players made it to the big leagues, they always remembered their games with the Chicago White Sox as one of the most exciting games in their playing days.
