LOCAL PAIR PURCHASE TWIN LAKES WATERCRAFT RENTAL

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Whether someone is seeking an adventure or a simple afternoon out on the lake, Twin Lakes Boat Rental has an inventory to suit most needs, according to Dave Lang, a partner in the business. Twin Lakes Boat Rental, LLC, formerly Leslie’s Kayak and Paddleboard, has nearly 50 kayaks, paddleboards and about 20 boats available at two locations. “We got a little bit of everything going on,” said Lang, who operates the business with Ryan LaMeer. Lang, responsible for boat rentals, said the business offers 15 pontoon boats, three fishing boats and two family boats. The assortment, he said, includes a pontoon boat equipped with a Tiki bar and Yamaha surround sound stereo system. “It looks like a Tiki bar,” Lang said. “It has a Yamaha surround sound stereo system with subwoofers, it fits over 20 people.” That pontoon is ideal for bachelor parties, business parties, and like other boats offered by the company, it is petfriendly. “All of my boats have sun tops, an auxiliary input for music, so you can go out and enjoy a day on the lake,” Lang said. “They are all pet-friendly, we allow pets on everything here.” Cost to rent the Tiki Bar pontoon is $450 for four hours, and for the entire day, it increases to $600. If that is out of a customer’s price range, regular pontoons are rented at $400 for a full day and $250 for four hours. Meanwhile, for customers looking for an adventure on the lake, LaMeer has 20 kayaks and 25 paddleboards along with wave runners. For the first hour, the cost to rent a paddleboard or kayak is $20, but the rate

decreases to $15 the second hour. If users stay on the lake for three hours, it is an additional $10, followed by another $5 beyond the third hour. LaMeer, however, negotiates with renters who look to lease a kayak or paddleboard for several days. “We make better deals for multiple days, if you want to rent it for a month, or for a whole summer, we can come up with a fair price,” LaMeer said.

Change of ownership

About two months ago, LaMeer acquired Leslie’s Kayak and Paddleboard rental from Leslie DiCarlo, who was living in Illinois. “She was from Illinois, and it was kind of hard for her to keep coming back and forth,” LaMeer said. With the business change, LaMeer and Lang have two locations, one on East Lakeshore Drive and the other near Dock Hoppers Restaurant. “We just added a new location, this one right here,” LaMeer said at the Lakeshore Drive property. “The other is right in the heart of downtown Twin Lakes.” LaMeer, who grew up in Twin Lakes, said the business expansion further ignites his passion for the lake, where he sees his customers enjoying themselves. “I have always loved being on the water,” LaMeer said.

Paddle power:

By Christopher Bennett CORRESPONDENT

Combine the functional side of kayaking with the fun of surfing and you arrive at paddleboarding. Water enthusiasts from Bermuda to Lake Tahoe and all the way to England are taking note of the world’s fastest-growing aquatic recreation activity. Southeast Wisconsin is doing its part to help drive paddleboarding’s popularity. Paddleboards are available for rent on most area lakes, including Geneva Lake and each of the Twin Lakes in Western Kenosha County. According to various published reports paddleboarding’s origins can be traced to Hawaii, where the activity is known as “Hoe he’e nalu.” The Polynesians used stand-up paddleboards to travel between islands. The activity grew in popularity in the 1960s and again in the 2000s, when windsurfers on Maui took-up the sport. The trend spread to California and

eventually the rest of the country and the world. In 2010 the Stand Up Paddle Industry Association formed in Dana Point, Calif., which is centrally located between Los Angeles and San Diego. SUPIA markets itself as the trade organization of all standup paddle businesses.

A versatile option

During a 2016 interview, Michelle Peterson, of Fontana Paddle Company on Geneva Lake, said she rents-out eight paddleboards for every two kayaks when the weather is warm and the lake active. “For the person who just wants to be able to get out on the lake, it’s not nearly as intimidating,” Peterson said of paddleboarding. “They’re more versatile than a kayak.” Peterson said the paddleboard offers a different point of view of the water. She said she often sees people practicing yoga on paddleboards in the middle of Geneva Lake, and said there are paddleboards

Area embraces fastgrowing water activity

designed for activities such as fishing, cross fit, yoga and more. Boards designed for physical activity are wider, Peterson said. An average board is 28 to 32 inches wide. Boards designed for activities like exercise or fishing can be up to 36 inches wide. Racing boards are typically 24 to 26 inches wide.

Technique matters

Using a paddleboard is not as easy as hopping on and going about your merry way. Eventually it can be, but technique is important, especially for beginners. “When I look on the lake and see people paddling by – I see it all the time – half the people I see out there are holding the paddle backwards,” Peterson said. Peterson said if the balls of your feet hurt after paddleboarding, you used improper technique. “The biggest mistake they make is they paddle too far behind,” Peterson said. “You stroke from the front nose of the board to

the heel of your foot.” Stroking past the heel of your foot leads to pain in your feet. Peterson said the pain is because you instinctively dig-in with your feet to retain your balance. “On an easy day, take it out and paddle,” Peterson said. “If there’s no wind, you’re going to go forward. The added effort comes into play when conditions are not ideal, and you have winds and waves.” Peterson said she will not rent paddleboards without the user knowing what they are doing, and her staff will offer instruction to those new to the activity.

Precaution reigns

Safety must remain a concern when paddleboarding. You’re still on the water, and it is never wise to mess with the lake. Use a personal flotation device. Peterson said a light and a whistle are also good ideas. Peterson also said to only paddleboard when there is a combined temperature of 120 degrees between the air and water.

WITH PAINT AND SIP CLASSES

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Amanda Munsen is not just an owner of an art studio, but an artist herself, and wanted to share her passion with her hometown of Fox Lake, Ill. Munsen, who opened Studio 25 Art Creations last November, discovered her passion for art while attending the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse. “There was always something that I loved about art, teaching, and my love for Fox Lake, but that was not my initial mindset when going to La Crosse,” Munsen said. “But as all life discoveries happen, it took a few twists and turns in the road until I found what I truly wanted to do and what I wanted to bring to my hometown.” After she graduated from UW-La Crosse in 2013, she returned to Fox Lake, where she and her Studio 25 “team” started athome paint parties. Her team consists of parents, Cindy and Gordon, who have shown support for Munsen’s efforts to give back to the community. “Studio 25 is a very family-oriented art studio and I have been lucky enough to have my parents, family, and friends by my side through this new adventure I took on,” said Munsen, who reportedly has customers in the Southern Wisconsin region. Meanwhile, as her paint parties gained exposure, Munsen and her supportive team decided to open a permanent place on Nippersink Boulevard. Munsen, who offers classes tailored for the family, said paint and sip courses have been the largest draw. To attend paint and sip classes, students are required to have identification indicating they are 21 years old.

“We do the very popular and fun paint and sip parties!” Munsen said. “We can hold up to 35 people in our location, but we also occasionally travel.” She said the classes give adults freedom to express themselves through their artwork. “The paint and sip classes are definitely the hook for most people,” Munsen said. “I love it because it allows adults to enjoy themselves with friends and family in a

setting where you are creating and trying new things.” Although the classes are the most popular, Munsen also offers courses for grade-school children and teenagers, whom she hopes to inspire. “One of our main reasons on wanting to bring the studio into Fox Lake was to give teens and kids a place to explore the arts and their creative side,” she said. “Throughout the school year, we work

with the local middle schools and Grant Community High School to display student artwork.” Previously, she held a paint party for a Girl Scout troop, which delivered a presentation about entrepreneurship. “As of right now, we have public kid’s paint parties, which are for ages 8 to 12,” she said. “We also have teen paint nights every second Saturday of the month.” Munsen’s passion goes beyond the walls of Studio 25, however, with a Community Art Mosaic in the Village of Fox Lake. The Community Art Mosaic, a Fox Lake initiative, was created to bolster community involvement in the arts. “When the studio first came into Fox Lake we, Studio 25, were approached by the village with an idea on how to create a piece for the community while having the locals be involved as well,” Munsen said. “We plan on doing a new mosaic each year for the community. In fact, we just started working with the Village of Fox Lake with this year’s design ideas.” However, without her family, her vision and dedication to the community would not have occurred. “My family has always been a huge support system and I couldn’t imagine going on this journey without them,” she said. “As I was growing up, they always encouraged my passions and I wanted to give another place to let families have that outlet.” Munsen, who has yet to take her show to the communities in Racine, Kenosha and Walworth counties, is open to conveying artistic expression to new territories. “We are always open to new locations,” she said. “We love to spread the love of art wherever we can!”
