ChocolateFest

ChocolateFest is run by more than 750 volunteers. But the core group of people that work on the festival pretty much yearround is known as the ChocolateFest Operations Committee. This group consists of the directors of the Chocolate Experience Tent, entertainment, grounds, Marketing, operations, vendors, volunteers and many others. Their boundless energy has become synonymous with the spirit of ChocolateFest. The character of these people may be manifested in the great moments, but it is made in the small ones they do the other 51 weeks of the year. These people understand that enthusiasm is the best protection in any situation. Wholeheartedness is contagious. Give of yourself, if you wish to get it from others. For 29 years now, ChocolateFest has been a vital part of the Burlington community. Events like this don’t “just happen”. It takes people who understand that to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination and dedication. Is ChocolateFest successful? The answer is – ‘YES’’. It will be a success this year as it has been for the past 29 years because it is hugged by the faithful arms of volunteers.

– Mayor Bob Miller City of Burlington

Burlington set to celebrate everything chocolate

ED NADOLSKI ChocolateFest 2015

Chocolate sculptor Dave Andrews of Wauwatosa puts the finishing touches on his creation, dubbed “What a World” at Burlington’s 2014 ChocolateFest. The sculpture captures the Wicked Witch of the West from “The Wizard of Oz” as she’s melting and uttering her signature phrase. The sculpture was judged best among the four created during the festival.

fair and the community Memorial Day parade at 9 a.m. May 25. Carnival fun And, for the daredevils among us, there’s the Burlington Rotary Carnival featuring North American Midway Entertainment, which is the largest – and many consider the best – traveling outdoor amusement park in the country. The carnival will again offer a Mega Pass, which includes gate admission and unlimited rides during the full run of the festival. The Mega Pass has a value of $182, but is sold for $75 until May 20 at the Burlington Walgreens. The carnival also offers ride band tickets, which include unlimited rides during certain times of the festival. The ride band tickets cost $25 on the grounds, $20 in advance until May 20.

Ride band times are: • Thursday, May 21 (5 p.m. to close) • Saturday, May 23 and Sunday, May 24 (session 1: 10 a.m.-5 p.m. and session 2: 6 p.m.-close) • Monday, May 25 (noon to close) A new ride band ticket is needed for each session/time slot. It benefits the community So, what’s the best part of ChocolateFest? The festival is a major fundraiser for many of the area’s non-profit organizations that provide the volunteer workforce for the festival. In recent years ChocolateFest generates nearly $100,000 annually for these groups, who poured the money back into a variety of community program’s and services. Since it’s inception in 1989, the festival has generated more than $2 million for these charitable organizations.

chocolatefest 2015

Burlington is again poised to celebrate Wisconsin’s sweetest festival – ChocolateFest – over the Memorial Day weekend. The festival runs May 22-25 this year. The Chocolate Experience Tent will again be dedicated to the creamy confection with a plethora of vendors, contests and events. Among those are the Nestles chocolate bar eating contests and the chocolate sculpture contest. The popular Chef Meltdown competition returns along with chocolate cooking demonstrations, eating contests and the Chocolate Marketplace. Professional chef competition begins at 6 p.m. Friday, May 22 in Chocolate Experience tent featuring: • Chef Jeff Willis of B.J. Wentkers, Burlington. • Chef Michael Stigler of Thunder Bay Grille, Pewaukee. • Chef Thomas Cicero of Hometown Sausage Kitchen, East Troy. The emcee for the event is Tom Kief, host of the Morning Show on Kenosha’s WIIL 95.1, and the judges are celebrity Chef David Ross, Winner of 2014 ChocolateFest’s $1,000 MeltDown competition, and Chef Michael Lavin of Gooseberries Catering and Fresh Food Market, Burlington. But even the rare person who doesn’t love chocolate will find plenty of fun at ChocolateFest. Three stages offer nearly continuous entertainment – from the AllAmerican Lumberjack Show to live music performances by artists such as Bella Cain, Pat McCurdy and the popular Toys – for all tastes. This year’s festival features a Friday night performance from Burlington’s own Markstock. And if that’s not enough, consider some of the other events such as a Friday night fireworks display, the Jaycees arts and crafts

our Burlington area young women will vie for the title of Miss Burlington Area ChocolateFest 2016 Saturday, May 23, at 1 p.m. on the Wanasek Stage at ChocolateFest. Named the “sweetest pageant in the state” by Secretary of Tourism Stephanie Klett, this is the 31st year of the pageant. A local preliminary for Miss Wisconsin and Miss America, the Miss Burlington Area 2016 winner will compete next year at Miss Wisconsin for a chance to compete at Miss America. Miss BAC is a holdover pageant, meaning the winner completes her year-long reign before competing at Miss Wisconsin. Last year’s winner, Alexandria Knight, will compete at Miss Wisconsin in June. All competitors participate in five areas of competition: talent, presence and poise in evening gown, on-stage question, interview and lifestyle and fitness in swimwear. This year’s competitors: Haley Lynam, daughter of Julie and Brian Lynam of Racine. Lynam will play the violin for her talent presentation and has chosen “Autism Speaks” for her community service platform. She is a student at Marquette

University, where she hopes to pursue a doctorate in physical therapy. Stephanie Parco, daughter of Kevin and Beth Parco of Racine. Parco will dance for her talent presentation and has chosen “Creating Memories Through Wish of a Lifetime” as her community service platform. She is a student at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside, where she is a communications major. Amber Riley-Eckman, daughter of Tim Eckman and Rich and Suanne Riley of Waterford. Riley-Eckman will play the violin for her talent presentation and has chosen “Raise the Awareness of Pancreatic Cancer” for her community service platform. She hopes to become a respiratory therapist. Lauren Wolfson, daughter of Robert and Laura Wolfson of Waterford. Wolfson will sing for her talent presentation and has chosen “Mental Health Awareness” as her community service platform. She is a student at Carthage College pursing a Bachelor of the Arts degree in hopes of becoming a film actress. The mistress of ceremonies for the event is Miss BAC 2014 Ashely Monti, assisted by Miss BAC 2006 Caitlin Machol. Miss Racine 2015 Alyssa Bohm, Miss Milwaukee 2015 Haylee Bande and Monti will provide special

performances, as will Steppin’ Out, a local barbershop quartet. The winner of the pageant will receive a $500 scholarship from Miller Motors and North Shore Bank, a $50 cash award and the crown from Fluegge Optical, a sash from Machol, and flowers from Gia Bella in Burlington. The first runner-up will receive $100 from the City of Burlington, a $100 cash award from Fluegge Optical and a flower from the Pink Peony Floral Shoppe in Waterford. Each of the other contestants will receive a $50 cash award from Worldwide Limited LTD and a flower from the Pink Peony.
