WELCOME TO

It is an exciting time for our city this year and the smell of chocolate is in full bloom. Nestle, celebrating their 50th anniversary in Burlington this year, is what inspired Burlington to become “Chocolate City USA.”

Another milestone to celebrate is the 30th anniversary of holding our annual Chocolate Festival! Who would have known when ChocolateFest was created that it would grow to be the largest festival for Racine County! The festival is not only a draw for counties around us, but many travel from afar for the taste of fine chocolate and fun for all ages. Changes throughout the years have made the festival better. The date the festival is held was changed to Memorial Day weekend to honor our veterans and allow an extra day for patrons to enjoy the festivities. Thank you to Sue Johnson, who is responsible for our Miss Burlington Area pageant. This pageant has been a huge success for young ladies to represent Burlington and also participate in the Miss Wisconsin pageant. Many volunteers have given tireless hours of their time to make this festival what it is today. All of this hard work and dedication pays off as the money raised goes right back into the Burlington community. Enjoy your time in Burlington and be sure to visit our local shops and restaurants!

Chocolate emerges as election year frontrunner

All you need to know about ChocolateFest~

Burlington is ready to celebrate its 30th ChocolateFest As Burlington’s ChocolateFest enters its 30th year, organizers can look back with nostalgia at how the annual event, held Memorial Day weekend, has evolved. There was a time when festival patrons had one question on their minds – “Where’s the chocolate?” Now, whenever organizers hear the question, they point emphatically to the Chocolate Experience tent rising prominently from the festival grounds on the north side of the city’s downtown. This year’s festival – with its election year theme: Vote for Chocolate – runs May 27 through 30. The Chocolate Experience tent – which is air-conditioned to guard against messy melts on hot days – is home to all things chocolate: from eating and carving contests to cooking demonstrations and a fashion show featuring clothing made from Nestle’ candy wrappers. It also houses a variety of vendors selling a

plethora of chocolate confections. For those who like to sample the treats, the festival offers an $8 Taster Ticket that can be redeemed for 12 chocolate samples inside the tent. And everyone passing through the tent has a chance to walk away with a complimentary, fresh-baked Nestle Tollhouse chocolate chip cookie. This year, the festival’s chocolate cooking contest takes on a new angle with teams of area high school students competing for top honors. The High School Culinary Challenge under the direction of Chef David Ross and Chef Alex Newman features teams competing for monetary prizes that will benefit their school’s ProStart programs. ProStart is a national program that introduces students to careers in the restaurant and food service industries. Four teams will compete on Friday evening, May 27, to reach the finals scheduled for Sunday, May 29. The tent will also host demonstrations from Dan Small, host of MPTV’s “Outdoor Wisconsin,” Chef Ross and Chef Kevin Rausch of Lake Lawn Resort, Delavan. But even the rare person who doesn’t love chocolate will find plenty of fun at ChocolateFest. Multiple stages offer nearly continuous entertainment – from the All-

American Lumberjack Show to live music performances by artists such as Bella Cain, The Britins and Chasin’ Mason – for all tastes. And if that’s not enough, consider some of the other events such as a Friday night fireworks display, the Jaycees arts and crafts fair and the community Memorial Day parade at 9 a.m. May 25.

A wild ride

As usual there will be plenty of fun for kids with the Burlington Rotary Carnival featuring North American Midway Entertainment, which is the largest – and many consider the best – traveling outdoor amusement park in the country. The carnival will again offer a Mega Pass, which includes gate admission and unlimited rides during the full run of the festival. The Mega Pass has a value of more than $200, but is sold for $75 until May 25 at Fox River State Bank and Richter’s Marketplace. The carnival also offers ride band tickets, which include unlimited rides during certain times of the festival. The ride band tickets cost $30 on the grounds, $25 in advance (May 2 through 25). Ride band times are: • Thursday, May 21, 5 p.m. to close. • Friday, May 27, 4 p.m. to close. • Saturday, May 23 & Sunday, May 24, 10 a.m. to close. • Monday, May 25 (noon-close) A new ride band ticket is needed for each day of the festival. For additional information on the festival, visit www. chocolatefest.com.

Community benefit

Perhaps the best part of ChocolateFest, according to organizers, is that all this fun generates money for community service. The festival is a major fundraiser for many of the area’s nonprofit organizations that provide the volunteer workforce for the festival. In recent years ChocolateFest generates nearly $100,000 annually for these groups, who, in turn, pour the money back into a variety of community programs and services. Since it’s inception, the festival has generated more than $2 SUBMITTED PHOTO Newspaper Name million for these charitable organizations. David Andrews carved this award-winning Chewbacca Sweet indeed! sculpture during last year’s ChocolateFest.

(Continued from page 5)

ENTERTAINMENT: This year’s main

stage headliners include: Bella Cain on Friday at 8:30 p.m.; The Now on Saturday at 8:30 p.m.; Chasin’ Mason on Sunday at 8:30 p.m.; HeartAche Tonight on Sunday at 3:30 p.m.

COST FOR OTHER ACTIVITIES:

In addition to the entrance ticket costs, there are activities that cost additional money. There is a large selection of food and other vendors (T-shirts, etc.) who charge for their fare. The festival also offers a carnival which charges for its rides. You may purchase a wristband to ride unlimited rides during certain time periods.

CARNIVAL RIDE BAND HOURS: (Tickets $25 in advance; $30 on site)

Thursday 5p.m. to close; Friday, 4 p.m. to close; Saturday and Sunday, 10 a.m. to close; Monday noon to close. Individual ride tickets will be for sale on the grounds during the carnival. A Mega Pass offering parking, admission and unlimited rides throughout the festival (over $200 value) is available for $75. The tickets are sold May 2-25 at Fox River State Bank or Richter’s Marketplace.

HOW MUCH TIME DO I NEED?

This all depends on what you chose to do when you get here. Many families return multiple days to see specific entertainment, enjoy carnival rides, and participate in the Chocolate Experience Tent activities.

WHO RUNS THE FESTIVAL:

Burlington’s ChocolateFest is run completely by volunteers. The volunteers work on behalf of non-profit organizations

to earn money for their organization. So, in that sense, dozens of non-profit organizations are represented at the festival. Our vendors and the carnival, however, represent themselves (and not our non-profit groups or the festival). The festival operations committee also consists of all volunteers.

NO CARRY-INS: Carry-ins are not allowed.

BATHROOMS: The festival has

portable toilets in various places around the grounds.

CARNIVAL RIDES: The festival includes the world’s largest traveling carnival – it is a set-up and take down operation. INFORMATION: See more at: www.
