Former Delavanite finds home for model collection Janesville man’s replicas of Frank Lloyd Wright buildings will be kept at SC Johnson

Ron Olsen, of Janesville, builds a model of the Hall House in Ann Arbor, Mich., – a building Wright designed in 1957 that was never built.
Ron Olsen, 76, formerly of Delavan, is a retired architectural draftsman who turned his career into a hobby when he retired. Olsen, now of Janesville, has been making models of Frank Lloyd Wright homes for about 11 years and has found a home for his collection at the SC Johnson facility in Racine. “I am thrilled,” Olsen said about having his work displayed at Fortaleza Hall. “I couldn’t have picked a better place.” Olsen, who retired from Hufcor in Janesville, said he made some models while he was still working. Once he was retired, Olsen’s wife, Judy, told him he needed to find something do during the winter months. She suggested making models of Wright buildings because she knew Olsen was a fan of Wright. Olsen said he enjoyed making the models and has completed 30 of them, 24 of which will go on display in Racine sometime in the spring. Olsen has been married to Judy since 1961. Both are graduates of Delavan High School. They have three sons and four grandchildren, and Olsen says he still has several friends in the Delavan area. Olsen said he has been a fan of Wright architecture since he was in high school and that only intensified after he started working in the field in
Janesville. Olsen said he read several books about Wright and became a great admirer of his work. Wright was born in Wisconsin and was an architect, interior designer, writer, educator and lecturer. He designed more than 1,000 buildings, more than 500 of which were actually built. Wright was known for designing buildings that fit in well with their surroundings and were environmentally friendly. In 1991, the American Institute of Architects recognized Wright as the greatest American architect of all time. “A lot of his work was in earth tones, and he made his buildings fit in the site,” Olsen said. “You are very aware when you see one of them.” Olsen said Wright was very innovative and much of what he designed was well ahead of its time. Olsen’s collection has been stored in boxes in a drafting room in his basement for years. Olsen said he has been searching for a more appropriate home for them for more than three years. “They need to be seen,” he said. “They need to be out where people can appreciate them.” Olsen speculated each model could be worth up to $1,000 and each one replicates a Wright project in great detail. Olsen said the Falling Water home in Pennsylvania and the Romeo and Juliet Windmill in Spring Green are two of the more famous Wright
structures he has built models of. Olsen said he found quite a lot of interest in the collection, but it took awhile to find a home that offered everything Olsen desired – a place that was accessible to the public and a place where the collection would be well cared for and protected. Olsen’s collection was part of the Wright and Like Tour in Racine in June. Racine is the home of the SC Johnson facility, which includes two buildings Wright designed. Olsen said Fortaleza Hall will take over the collection for a oneyear temporary display beginning this spring, then the collection will be put on permanent display in the Frank Lloyd Wright Library on the SC Johnson campus. Fortaleza Hall is named after two expeditions the Johnson family made to Fortaleza, Brazil, in 1935 and 1998. A replica of the twin-engine S-38 amphibian plane that Sam Johnson flew to Brazil in 1998 is on display at the heart of the building. According to SC Johnson’s website, world-renowned architect Norman Foster designed the building itself as a contemporary partner to the Wright-designed buildings on the campus. “It is an ideal spot for them,” Olsen said about the new home for his models. “They provide tours, so thousands of people will see them each year.”

Officer retires after 26 years with department
• EARLY SPRING 2017 • PAGE 7
By Michael S. Hoey CORRESPONDENT
The Delavan Common Council honored City of Delavan Police Officer Allyn Hackett on Jan. 27 for his 26 years of service to the community. Hackett retired in early January. Police Chief Tim O’Neill said Hackett dedicated his entire life to law enforcement, serving in Whitewater before coming to Delavan. Hackett also served the Delavan Fire Department and fell off a ladder while on a call resulting in a serious injury. O’Neill said that was an example of the physical dedication to the city Hackett showed, but there were many other ways he showed his dedication as well. O’Neill said he and Hackett came up together in the department, both working the 3 to 11 p.m. shift at the same time – a shift during which new officers learn a lot. O’Neill said Hackett spent much of his career patrolling the east side of the city back when the dog track was still open and was drawing thousands of people, and Lake Lawn could have about 1,000 people on its grounds. O’Neill said that area had a lot of activity, but the department knew Hackett could handle it, and he found his niche out there. “He took care of things and didn’t need supervision,” O’Neill said. “We should have five more just like him.” O’Neill said Hackett fit well in the Delavan community and his entire family and extended family is dedicated to public service. Hackett was also the type of officer who initiated things. Hackett volunteered to become a warrant officer and settled hundreds of warrant issues without confrontations. He also volunteered to work in the Read-Along program in the elementary schools, particularly Darien Elementary School, where O’Neill joked there should be a bust of him. Hackett said he appreciated O’Neill and former Police Chief Larry Malsch giving him a chance in 1991. He said over the years, he has been sworn at, kicked, punched, knocked down, had a couch and a table thrown on him and fallen into Lake Comus, and yet he already misses the job and the people he worked with. “The city should be proud of the police department and every other department in the city,” Hackett said. “I don’t think the citizens realize what they have here since they don’t have to deal with them on a daily basis.” Hackett said the decision to retire was difficult but he knew it was time. He said one of his biggest regrets was not volunteering in the schools sooner in his career. “That was the best part of my career.”

Jean Kruzan, Lois Stritt, Dale Bradley and Ryan Schroeder pose with 100-year old wallpaper behind them and a lifeboat from a frigate ship that Stritt received as a gift 20 years ago. She started displaying it in the store in June, and it will continue to be displayed after the “facelift.”
Bradley’s to get ‘facelift’ By Michael S. Hoey CORRESPONDENT
If loyal customers or other downtown business owners feared Bradley’s Department Store was closing recently, they had nothing to fear. The signs that went up in the windows were to announce that Bradley’s is getting a “facelift” – the first of its kind in more than 50 years. Lois Stritt, who has owned Bradley’s for seven years, is excited about what the new space will look like and the effect it will have on her business. “I was so happy – it’s unbelievable,” Stritt said about her reaction to building owner Dale Bradley’s plans. “It was getting tired looking,” Stritt said. She said the building hasn’t been remodeled in at least half a century since. “Lois sells some real nice stuff, but your first instinct when you come in might be to walk right back out,” said Bradle, who is no relation to the building’s namesake. “We’re going to fix that.” Bradley purchased the building four years ago from Bill and Diane McCoy, who owned the building for more than 50 years. He lives in Wadsworth, Ill., just south of the Illinois border north of Gurnee. He said he has a lot of history in southern Wisconsin and in Delavan. Bradley said he isn’t gaining any money from the project. In fact, he is paying $50,000 for the first stage and more for a second stage possibly next fall or winter. He also said he even lowered Stritt’s rent when he took over the building. “I want to see her stay in business as long as she can,” Bradley said. Bradley said some people have questioned why he should care about a business in Delavan so much when he doesn’t even live in the community. He said the answer is simple – if Bradley’s closed, he would own an empty building.
“It’s a silly thing to do to some,” he said, “but I have gotten to know Lois and the ladies (who work in the store) and wanted to put some money into it.” Jean Kruzan, of J. Kruzan Construction and Remodeling in Lake Geneva, is the contractor for the project and she said seeing a building owner get along so well with and be so interested in the business of a tenant is great. “It’s nice to see that relationship,” she said. “It is unique that he wants to invest not only in the building but also her store.” Kruzan said she has fallen in love with the building and loves seeing what is behind the walls once the work begins. Already several great antiques were discovered in the basement, some of which belong to McCoy, and one of the exposed walls revealed wallpaper that appears to be more than 100 years old. Stritt said she and her husband, Jack, were set to purchase the store from the McCoys seven years ago after Jack’s retirement. At first Stritt, who said she had never had a job before, asked about working at the store. By Jan. 2, 2010, McCoy was ready to move on, put the building and store up for sale and he gave her the first opportunity to buy. Stritt and her husband decided to purchase the store only but Jack died before the final deal was done. Stritt pushed forward and says today the store is her life and her love. She joked that it is her grandbaby because she never had any real grandchildren. Bradley purchased the building four years ago and said he thought Stritt was probably nervous some rich jerk from Chicago was going to come in and throw her out. He said that was never his intention. He is content to leave her alone to do what she does well. Bradley recently decided it was time to put some money into the building.
Stage One of the project involves gutting the west side of the store and adding new dressing rooms, carpet, shelving, clothes racks, paint and lighting. Work began the first weekend in February and should be completed by late March. Stage Two will involve the east side of the store and might be completed in the fall or next winter. Bradley said he did not want to disrupt the business of the store during peak sales times. He said this time of year is typically the slowest and that is why it was chosen for the project. The only exterior work that will be done is new windows. Bradley said he thinks the exterior still looks pretty good and he likes the Bradley’s sign. Bradley said one of the reasons he purchased the building was because it shared his last name and his father enjoyed shopping at Bradley’s when he was young. Kruzan said the nostalgia and history of the building will be preserved. “It will have a 2017 look with a historic feel,” she said. Kruzan said she found some old cash registers she plans to resurface and use in the store and a second-level antique display area. Some antiques will adorn the walls and be for sale as well. A wall dedicated to Bradley’s memorabilia will be near the front entrance. “When you walk in you will get the feel of a store that puts the customer first,” Kruzan said. She said the 165-yearold store has a well-kept, polished, traditional feel to it that will be preserved. Stritt said she has heard so many stories from customers over the years and so many customers have become friends along the way. She said one young man came in not long ago and said the place smelled just like when his parents brought him in to shop years ago. Stritt apologized, but the young man said there was nothing to apologize for because the smell brought back great memories.
