A benefit dinner is scheduled Sept. 19 to benefit the Border family – Justin (from left), Owen, 8, Nathan, 5, and the late Jessica. The family was involved in a car crash in Beloit on June 13 that killed Jessica Border and left Owen Border with a head injury that requires ongoing medical attention.

hawn Panyk is connecting his faith with his finances by having a spaghetti dinner benefit for a friend whose wife was killed and son was hospitalized after a car crash in Rock County in June. Through his membership in Thrivent Financial, Panyk, a member of The River church in Delavan, is using the company’s Action Teams program to raise funds for the medical care of his friend’s son. Panyk befriended Justin Border, of Lake Geneva, about three years ago in a gaming group. Border’s eventual wife, Jessica –“Jessie” – also participated in the group and became a friend of Panyk’s. On June 13, the couple and Border’s 5- and 8-yearold sons from a previous marriage were driving north on Interstate 43 in Beloit when Justin Border stopped to help a disabled vehicle that was in the center of the northbound lanes facing south, according to a Janesville Gazette article. Another vehicle, a minivan, had already stopped at the scene to offer assistance. As Border was stopped with the vehicle’s hazard lights on behind the minivan, a semi truck hit the disabled vehicle that was in the roadway, according to the article, apparently slamming it into the minivan and Border’s vehicle. Border reported blacking out at that point, and a passenger in the minivan reported the van being struck from behind. A 20-year-old Janesville woman, who was driving

the disabled vehicle, was arrested for drunken driving and charged with homicide by intoxicated driving in Rock County Circuit Court. Jessie Border, 26, died as a result of the crash, and both children were injured. The younger boy, Nathan, broke his arm, and the older boy, Owen, suffered a head injury and remains under medical care, Panyk said. • SEE RAISE

corporate taxes, said Josh Duesterbeck, a consultant with the company. Because Thrivent is a non-profit organization, it doesn’t pay corporate taxes and instead those funds go back to the members to be used in the community – often to churches or other charitable organizations. Members can use either a $250 gift card or 50 t-shirts to promote or raise funds for an organization or cause of their choice. Thrivent is a national organization of Christians that helps its members be wise with money and live generously, according to the organization whose theme is “connecting faith and finances for good.” Thrivent has local offices in Delavan, 1407 Racine St., Unit E., and Burlington, 400 N. Pine Street. “We connect people’s faith to their finances,” Duesterbeck said. The company implemented action teams a few years ago. An action teams is a volunteer program available to Thrivent members focused on getting a team together in service. The program allows Thrivent members to live generously and take action on a cause they are passionate about. Members bring together a volunteer team of family, friends and neighbors to conduct one-time fundraisers, service activities or educational events. Members can visit thrivent.com/ action team to get information or apply for a project. They will need to log in with their thrivent.com user name and

Justin Border is a veteran having served five years in the U.S. Marines and is a Badger High School graduate, Panyk said. He described Jessie as “den motherish” and said both were “such quality people.” Panyk decided to use his twice-yearly opportunity as a Thrivent Financial member to form an Action Team to raise money for Owen’s care. The program gives Panyk $250 to use as seed money to conduct the fundraiser. As it turned out, members of Panyk’s team donated most of the items needed for the event, and Panyk will use the $250 to promote the event. Although the major items were donated without the seed money, Panyk said if not for the jump-start from Thrivent, he wouldn’t have had the courage to tackle the endeavor. Panyk hopes to draw 400 people to the

The $250 can’t simply be gifted or granted, it must be used to kick start the project. “The idea is to multiply itself,” Duesterbeck said. Members can lead up to two projects per year.

Brick Street Market opens in ‘new digs’

Three storefronts combine for new, larger cheese store, cafe By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

Brick Street Market staff recently put the final touches on its new building at 116 E. Walworth Ave., Delavan, and reopened in late July. “We are thrilled to be nearly done with the final cleaning stages,” owner Laura Jacobs Welch said before re-opening July 27 a few doors down from the former smaller store. “I am thrilled with the new facility and proud for us to be in or new home.” Welch said the construction phase took longer than she anticipated. Three separate stores at 108, 110 and 116 E. Walworth Ave. were connected and renovated into the new Brick Street Market. Reconstruction of the 101-yearold Van Velzer building required removing layers of flooring and wall coverings to reveal original historic materials. The lunch menu at Brick Street will remain the same in the initial phase but the store will add items as it “gets cozy in our new digs,” Welch said. The store will be open seven days a

week initially with Sunday and Monday hours added for the summer. Early week hours will be shorter and earlier and late-week hours will be longer and later, Welch said. Store hours are 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday and 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday. Employee Kellie Laurson will join the store’s staff full-time, and Michelle Morgan, Welch’s daughter, will return to the staff. Brick Street Market opened its doors in July of 2008. Cheese cases are stocked year-round with small, farmstead cheese from Wisconsin and around the globe. The market holds special events year round, including the First Friday Art Preview. from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on the first Friday of each month and wine and cheese tastings and classes. The market also hosts private birthday parties, book clubs, after-hours social gatherings and card clubs. Evenings and weekends bookings are available. Trends turn to COZY and COMFORTABLE fall entertaining

As the glorious days of summer slip into crisp evenings, the changing colors trigger a transition in seasonal décor. “There’s an exciting mix of texture and color in fall fashion that’s extending into home decorating,” says designer Julie Robbins. “As for tabletop, a big trend this season is blending patterns

you wouldn’t ordinarily put on the same table. For example, paring a very exotic or modern pattern, like an animal print or an architectural design with a mainstream vintage Americana pattern such as Fiesta, or maybe mixing a polka dot pattern with fine china. It’s unexpected, but it really works.” As home decor changes with fall trends, so is the way many entertain. Gatherings lean toward relaxed, cozy evenings making memories with friends and family; a respite before the upcoming busy holiday season. “My favorite autumn get-togethers are around the fireplace with homemade chili and cornbread - a very casual, blue jean kind of thing and that’s a big trend for fall entertaining,” Robbins says. “People are paring back and looking for ways to entertain that don’t mean setting a table for 12. This ranges from baby boomers looking to downsize to millennials who want substance over flash. It’s earthy and simple.” Robbins says fall root vegetables and apples coming into season signal a time for cool weather dishes and the tableware that goes with it, such as soup bowls and mugs. Canapé plates and individual dip bowls are perfect for tailgating and outdoor finger food buffets around a bonfire or fire pit, because these smaller pieces give guests the freedom to mingle. Another great tip, when moving your entertaining out of the dining room: think about the space you’re going to use, then

brainstorm innovative ways to repurpose things from your table. “I like to fill pitchers with flowers or fall foliage to create gorgeous accents that can be used outdoors or anywhere around the house,” says Replacements’ Product Marketing Manager, Keith Winkler. “It’s easy to turn a serving tray into a unique center piece by placing small mums, pansies or other fall potted plants in a nice

arrangement on the tray. You can turn wine glasses upside down and place candles on the base to create unique holders. The possibilities are endless.” Repurposing is more than fun and functional – these new uses also make great conversation starters. Robbins plans on posting fall entertaining and decorating ideas on Replacements’ Facebook page throughout the autumn months. (BPT)

Composer gives clown song to city Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra announces invitation to Europe By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

An area composer and pianist gave the City of Delavan the gift of song – literally. Matthew Hollingsworth, of Janesville, who was a guess artist with the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra at the Phoenix Park Bandshell on July 25, dedicated and relinquished his property rights to an original song he composed for the city about its clowns and circus history. Hollingsworth has composed several major pieces, said Greg Roy, business manager for the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra. He composed the background music for “Wisconsin From the Air,” a video featuring aerial views of Wisconsin’s attractions; a Super Bowl comercial for T Mobile that featured Kim Kardashian; and a Subway restaurant commercial, Roy said. He’s quite busy, and he’s quite good,” he said. In honor of Delavan, Roy said, Hollingsworth composed some specific clown music, dedicated it to Delavan clowns and history of the circus and presented a certificate to Mayor Mel Nieuwenhuis on Saturday. The certificate says the song is dedicated to the City of Delavan and relinquishes property rights of the original material, giving the song to the city as a gift, Roy said. “He took it upon himself to do that, and we’re very, very pleased that he did that,” he said. Saturday’s concert by the Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra from Beloit was dedicating to Jim Santy, and was coupled with Brick Street Market’s wine and cheese pairing in Phoenix Park. The concert was the orchestra’s first appearance, but second attempt, in Delavan, Roy said. Last year’s scheduled event was cancelled because of tornadoes that rolled through the area, he said. “We’re very excited about being there,” Roy said before the show. The Beloit-based group hoped to draw a Chicago crowd to Delavan and made a major announcement at the show: “We’ve just been invited as an orchestra to play in Europe,” Roy said. Roy said the invitation could have major implications on the orchestra and the area’s tourism and music opportunities. He said chamber members could make connections in Europe that lead to drawing international music students to the area and becoming an international music center. “What we would like to see and hope is this international aspect would open us up to have an international music festival,” Roy said. The Turtle Creek Chamber Orchestra is in its fourth season and has about 20 members from Madison, Fort Atkinson, Brodhead, Delavan, Milwaukee and other communities in southeast Wisconsin. Alonzo Ortiz, a Delavan-Darien High School graduate who received a scholarship from the orchestra’s foundation, was a guest pianist with the group Saturday. “He’s just a phenomenal young man on the piano,” Roy said. He said the orchestra plays a smattering of classical music, patriotic-themed songs and movie soundtrack hits. “We’re not a typical classical orchestra. We’re a pops. We want people to enjoy themselves. We all wear t-shirts. We don’t wear white shirts and ties,” he said. The group plays only strings – no brass and no woodwinds. “You’d be amazed at the sound,” he said. “We’re hoping to come back year after year and continue to play before the people of Delavan.”

Don’t let the end of summer pass you by. With fall almost here, finish off the summer season by creating a few new traditions.

Make the most of

THE END OF SUMMER

The clock is ticking on the sunniest season. With the end of summer drawing near, considering switching things up to help you make the most of every day.

Be your own bartender That new neighborhood hot spot where everyone knows your name? Your patio. Try experimenting with frosty, whole-fruit drinks recipes like margaritas and adult smoothies, but watch the sugar if the party gets too steamy. “During a season with high temperatures, you want to stick with bright, refreshing flavors,” says Tom Macy, bartender and co-owner of Clover Club. “Stay away from stronger, spirit-forward cocktails and go for drinks with fresh-squeezed juice and crisp, seasonal fruits and vegetables. Something that will help you cool down without getting you in over your head.” Macy suggests trying out one of his newest creations – the Jalapeño Cucumber Margarita, which includes; jalapeño tequila, fresh lime juice, simple syrup, ice, freshly cut cucumber slices with the optional addition of cilantro. For the full recipe, visit TomMacy.com. Redefine vacation beard For the gentleman, along with the summer getaway comes the vacation beard. Understandable, as who wants to shave when there are sights to be seen and adventures to be had? It’s easy to come back to civilization with a beard looking a little weary instead of worldly. That’s no

problem – these furry celebrations of off-the-clock leisure can become your canvas. “Going on, or returning from vacation is the perfect time to switch up your look,” says Christopher Hunt, Editor-at-Large at AskMen. “If you let your facial hair run wild while you had a few days off – all the better – now you have something to play with. Shape it into a sharp goatee or trim it down into a classic, timeless scruffy look. Or shave it all off and start over. You can head into work feeling fresh.” Hunt suggests trying out the new BIC Flex 5 Razor because it has a “Balancing Sphere” that gives better shave control. Its precision edging blade is useful in difficult spots, such as under the nose and around the sideburns. “It’s all about creating a definition for whatever unique facial hair style you choose, with the right tool for the job,” he says. Make workouts fun Think of the days when you wanted to stay outside all day, running around and playing games. Why not combine friendly competition with your workouts? Find a park and invite friends or coworkers for an old-fashioned game of “capture the flag.” It’s a fun way to increase heart rates. Once you’re done, invite your thirsty crew home to check out your bartending skills. For more lifestyle tips from Macy and Hunt, visit www.BicFlexRazors.com. (STATEPOINT)
