‘FAB LAB’ coming to D-DHS next school year The drive to provide more outstanding opportunities for science, technology, engineering and math training for DelavanDarien students has reached its next phase. With support from community partners, the district will create the Comet Creations Fab Lab in the high school’s technical education department. A Fab Lab is an area meant for learning and innovation where students, and eventually community members, can fabricate, experiment, create, mentor and invent. The lab will have the latest high-tech equipment including three-dimensional printers, vinyl cutters and laser engravers. “Students get to experience learning and applying knowledge to real-life challenges,” said Cindy Yager, director of careers and
occupations for D-DHS. “Kids get excited about this kind of technology because the connection to the real world and life after graduation is huge.” Over summer, a workspace in an existing D-DHS computer lab will be retrofitted to house the equipment. Technology teachers at D-DHS will receive training, and the equipment should be ready to use by the fall semester in such courses as engineering design and development, principles of engineering, auto computer-assisted design and introduction to engineering design. “We’re not talking about far-out stuff here. We’re talking about reality,” D-DHS technology teacher Mike Fellin said. “We are giving students the tools they need to be trained to do many jobs after they graduate
Senior swimmers receive academic all-state awards Delavan-Darien High School senior swimmers Justin Brown and Tim Clark were selected as Wisconsin Interscholastic Swim Coaches Association academic all-state award winners. To qualify, swimmers must be in senior standing, have had a grade point average of 3.5 or above every semester, and have been a varsity swimmer for a minimum of two years and on the school’s swim team for three years.

high school or from a technical college. And students in some of these classes, which are through the Project Lead The Way curriculum, can receive college credits here at D-DHS. “The jobs are out there and we want to help provide skilled, job-ready adults to keep our community, state and country strong. The Fab Lab will really be a benefit to many students. We’re excited to see the interest level in technical education courses growing here at D-DHS. ” Once the Fab Lab is set up, students will begin making their own projects and help other entrepreneurs from the community get theirs off the ground. “In our first year, we’re mainly going to have it open to students and eventually introduce it to the community for their use through the students and their instructors,” Yeager said. “Students and instructors will be able to ‘quote’ the work a community member needs done based on the time and material costs to create a prototype or product for them based on submitted designs. That way, the lab becomes more self-sufficient.” Students receive tremendous skills training in Fab Labs, from the engineering and math behind product development, to the business training related to quoting work, making deadlines and working with customers, Yager said. The Fab Lab will also be used by other curricular areas at D-DHS, she said. Art students could find creative uses for 3-D models and laser-etched pieces. Social studies students can study economics behind a product going from an idea to a massproduced consumable good. Biology students can model cells, molecules or even parts of the human body with 3-D printers, Yager said. The Fab Lab could eventually open up for more direct community use. “The opportunities are endless and we are very excited to offer this Fab Lab opportunity to our students and community members,” Yager said. “The anticipation is certainly growing in our building to see it come to fruition.”
FOUNDATION GRANT
To support the ongoing development of the Fab Lab and overall improvement of the technology education department at DDHS, district officials are setting up a “foundation grant” structure, Yager said. The grant format is based on sponsorships from community partners. In exchange for monetary, equipment or in-kind donations, donors receive various benefits and recognition depending on their level of contribution. Yager said foundation grant programs have experienced success across the state and nation. Like members of the supporting Career and Technical Education Support Committee, local businesses often support technology education in schools because it helps improve the school-to-work pipeline for student graduates who are ready for the workforce. Funds from the work and through foundation grant supporters will allow the Fab Lab to continue to grow and provide additional equipment that will expand learning opportunities for students, Yager said. Any individuals or corporations interested in becoming a partner in the Delavan-Darien Comet Creations Fab Lab project should contact Yager at (262) 728-2642 Ext. 4402, or cyager@ ddschools.org. Various sponsorship levels – from $0 to $500 “friend” giving up to $15,000-plus platinum level sponsors – are available and include various benefits to the donor such as recognition on promotional materials and equipment.
PROGRAM NEEDS
The following “wish list” of items will be added to the Fab Lab as additional funding becomes available: Laser engraver, 3-D printers, 3-D mill, pick-and-place robot, Solidworks software license, storage cabinets, work tables, drill press, band saw, drills, specialty tools, tool storage, shop vacs, stools, whiteboards, computers and classroom upgrades.

Top 10 D-DHS seniors honored
The 26th annual Southern Lakes Conference Academic Top 10 banquet was held on April 19 in Waterford at the Cotton Exchange II. The top 10 academically ranked seniors from each of the eight member schools of the Southern Lakes Conference – Delavan-Darien, Badger,
Burlington, Waterford, Elkhorn, Westosha Central, Union Grove and Wilmot Union – were honored. The top 10 seniors from DelavanDarien High School are Helen Bourgeois, Adam Drefs, Maxwell Grover, Sarah Hardwick, Katherine Jones, Amanda Lee, Priya Patel, Andrew
Pierson, Marguerite Sirkman and Dana Truckenbrod. Each of the seniors received a commemorative plaque for his or her achievements. Delavan-Darien School District Superintendent Robert Crist and D-DHS Principal Mike Kolff accompanied the seniors at the banquet.
A commencement ceremony will take place for the Delavan-Darien High School Class of 2015 at 6:30 p.m. June 11. Weather permitting, the ceremony will be outside at Borg Memorial Stadium. Gates will open at 5 p.m. for anyone who wants to arrive early. Guests might wish to bring a visor or hat with brim to shield their eyes from the setting sun. If the ceremony is moved indoors to the D-DHS east gym, doors will open at 5:30 p.m. Indoor seating is limited and each graduate will receive six tickets for the ceremony with the opportunity to request more tickets at graduation rehearsal if any remain available. The ceremony will be broadcast live in the D-DHS auditorium for overflow crowds. The decision on location will be made by 3 p.m. June 9. It will be announced at the rehearsal.
D-DHS home to soccer state champions once again A highlight of the Class of 2015’s senior year is the return of the state championship soccer title to Delavan-Darien High School. After 14 years, D-DHS is once again the top soccer team in the state. On Nov. 1, D-DHS defeated Mount Horeb 3-1 at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee to earn the WIAA Division 3 title. The last time the Comets won a state championship was 2000, when they were the Division 2 champion. D-DHS was the Division 2 runner up in 1994, 1996, 1998 and 2005. The team finished the season 23-2-2 and had two of the most prolific goal scorers in the state in Juan “Chuy” Rocha (55 goals, most in state, most points in state with 127) and Tigrio Huerta (33 goals, seventh in state, 32 assists, most in state, and third-most points in state, 98). To earn the state title, the Comets had the toughest road of any team in the Division 3 bracket. D-DHS, the No. 4-ranked team at the end of the season in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association poll, first had to defeat East Troy in the regional semifinal. The Comets won that game 10-0. The next three matches were the tough ones. In the regional final, D-DHS defeated No. 3-ranked
St. Anthony 4-1. The Comets scored a sectional semifinal win over No. 2 Catholic Memorial 4-3. In the state qualifying sectional, D-DHS got past No. 1-ranked Grafton 6-2. At state on Oct. 30, D-DHS beat Rice Lake in the semifinals, also by a 6-2 margin. Lastly, in the finals, the high-octane offense of the Comets was too much for the defensiveminded Mount Horeb squad, which hadn’t allowed a goal in the entire post season. The Vikings (14-6-4) only had three games all season where they gave up two or more goals, and they had 12 shutouts, including playoffs. Chuy Rocha got the scoring started with an unassisted goal in the 21st minute. Tigrio Huerta then had possibly the tournament’s biggest highlight reel goal when he scored on a header less than two minutes later. Saul Rivera sent a 40-yard pass off a free kick toward the goal, and Huerta headed it in just in front of the outstretched arms of the Mount Horeb keeper. Jose Lemus finished off the scoring for the Comets in the 34th minute off an assist from Jason Cano. Mt. Horeb scored the game’s final goal in the 43rd minute following a rebound off a corner kick.
