ne of the things I noticed when going through the submissions to the Community Guide photo contest was the focus on nature this year’s photographers had. From sprawling vistas of local prairies to stunning views of the area lakes to photos from the farm, this year’s entries paint a striking portrait of best East Troy in nature’s finest. It was a unique and interesting view of the area for the guide with many new photographers submitting photos. I liked their take on the local countryside and waterways. I especially enjoyed the winning photo on the cover this year. The historic downtown square in the Village of East Troy is the hub of this community, which hosts the popular local events from Memorial Day to the annual arrival of Santa and Mrs. Claus in December. But the little girl playing hide and seek in the winning photo made the judges in the office smile for its whimsical nature as we often watch children play in the square park from our office windows. In last year’s edition of the Community Guide, I noted how the downtown square was undergoing a revitalization and that has continued through 2015. Some of the buildings on the square have received a

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS Area residents were offered the chance to show their version of East Troy through the lens of their cameras in the eighth annual East Troy Times Community Guide photography competition. This year, five photographers submitted more than a dozen photos to share with the East Troy community. Three residents received top honors – Wendy Graf, Logan Fitch and Kim Berger. Several of the photographers who submitted photos this year were new to the publication and even included a student from East Troy High School. The East Troy Times wants to thank each of them for sharing their art. Winners were selected on originality, subject matter, visual appeal and connection to East Troy. facelift and one was even torn down to make room for a new structure. I look forward to seeing what the square will look like next year when I write this. I’ve grown to love the Tri-Troy area as I’ve served as its editor for the past two years and watching the community grow has been a pleasure. The local municipalities, School District and East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce have set their sights on the future and exciting things have been happening. One of the things that always amazes me about East Troy is how much support the local non-profit organizations receive from the community. Woman’s Club Arts and Crafts Fair would never happen. There a sense of pride in the East Troy community that translates to the local events, which continue to grow and flourish in the welcoming atmosphere. If you’re not involved in the community in some way, I urge you to consider joining one of the local clubs or organizations. Whether you volunteer with the scouts or the schools or food pantry, run for a board position or help out at church, every minute spent serving others helps build the community. It can also be a lot of fun. What better way to spend the Fourth of July than at the annual festival with friends and family, or have an ear of corn down on the square over the Memorial Day weekend. There’s a reason the crowds flock to East Troy for these events. Get out and join the fun.
