SECOND PLACE ~

Kim Berger

3

East Troy resident Kim Berger took second with this fun photo of her son playing with one of his new calves at a farm on Bluff Road. The judges liked the interaction between man and beast.

East Troy

is a one-of-a-kind community ach year, when I sit down to write this introduction to the Community Guide, I’m reminded I’ve spent another year as an adopted member of the East Troy family. For the past three years, I’ve had the pleasure of getting to know the people of East Troy and all the wonderful things about the community. The photos in this year’s guide represent what a great place this is. From peaceful sunsets on Lake Beulah to the abundant nature to the village square, where so much fun happens, East Troy is a special place. As a cat owner myself, this year’s firstplace winner (see the cover) made me smile – catitude at it’s finest. Berger also took second place this year

with the above photo of her son and one of their cows. I found the glimpse into the East Troy farming life fascinating. I also enjoyed the photos submitted by Shirley Parsons this year, a newcomer to the contest. She brought them in to the office herself, asking if she could share them with the readers. Perennial contest entrant John Finney also provided several spectacular sunset photos from the lake and an adorable look at his dog. Last, but not least, Scott Owens sent in photos that offered a really different take on East Troy, bringing to life some of the area’s hot spots. The staff at the Times appreciates everyone’s efforts and beautiful photos. In the last couple editions of the

LIFE THROUGH THE LENS

Area residents were offered the chance to show their version of East Troy through the lens of their cameras in the ninth annual East Troy Times Community Guide photography competition. This year, four photographers submitted more than a dozen photos to share with the East Troy community. Two residents received top honors – Kim Berger and Scott Owens. The four photographers who submitted photos this year offer their unique take on life in East Troy and the beauty it has to offer. The East Troy Times wants to thank each of them for sharing their art. Winners were selected on originality, subject matter, visual appeal and connection to East Troy. The winning entries are featured throughout this publication.

East Troy’s Scott Owens was out riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle on Highway ES between East Troy and Elkhorn when he stopped to take this colorful photo of his ride. Owens said he loved the contrast of the blue sky and the tree colors. The judges did too.

Shirley Parsons, of East Troy, submitted this photo of the sun setting behind one of the trees in her backyard. The judges chose this for an honorable mention because of the beautiful colors and peaceful nature of the photo.

a CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 Community Guide, I’ve talked about how the downtown square is undergoing a revitalization, which continued throughout 2016. More buildings on the square have received a facelift and the one that was torn down has been replaced with a beautiful new three-story building. The square has become a fantastic representation of the area with an intriguing mix of businesses.

The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce pulled out all the stops this past year, expanding its events and making the East Troy square a destination with each and every one. The volunteers here have huge hearts and the local non-profit organizations benefit from all that love. Events like the annual Corn & Brat Roast, Community-wide Rummage Sale or the Holiday Help of East An annual publication of the Troy program would never East Troy Times happen without them. & Southern Lakes Newspapers If you’re not involved in the 2100 Church St., community in some way, I urge P.O. the local clubs or organizations. Whether you volunteer with the scouts or the schools or food pantry, run for a board position or help out at church, every minute spent serving others helps build the community. It can also be a lot of fun. What better way to spend the Fourth of July than at the annual festival with friends and family, or have an ear of corn down on the square over the Memorial Day weekend. There’s a reason the crowds flock to East Troy for these events. Join in on the fun!
