here’s just something special about the tri-Troy area, which encompasses the Village and Town of East Troy and the Town of Troy. Rolling hills and green pastures make up most of the landscape, but when you come into the village, there are big-city amenities and major community events that attract visitors on a regular basis. East Troy is home to the Bluegrass Festival, Cycling Classic, Santa Train, Fourth of July parade and festival, two corn and brat roasts, Brewfest, community-wide rummage sale and new this year, the Sidewalk Chalk Art festival. These events bring thousands of visitors to the Village of East Troy each year, where community members and area businesses welcome them with open arms. East Troy’s historic downtown square with its pavilion and park hosts most of the village’s large events. The quaint hub of the area offers several specialty businesses. There’s a barber, several beauty shops, a coffeehouse, bed and breakfast, and several restaurants and bars for local and visitors to enjoy. Area dining establishments include LD’s BBQ, Roma’s Ristorante, Ivan’s on the Square, Princess Café, The Grist Mill, Dos Amigos, Gus’s Drive-In, Genoa Pizza and more. There’s also access to McDonald’s, Burger

King, Subway and Cousins. East Troy has its own airport and several international companies like Allan Integrated Control Systems and Wisconsin Oven Corp. Other attractions in the area include the East Troy Electric Railroad, Sky Knights Sport Parachute Club and Lounge and Lauber’s Old Fashion Ice Cream shop, where you can take a trip back in time and visit a soda fountain of yesteryear. The East Troy Area Chamber of Commerce is available to help residents and visitors alike with their local needs and the newspaper office is also on the downtown square. To contact the chamber, visit easttroy.org. To contact the newspaper, call (262) 642-7451. Another one of the area’s special places is Booth Lake Memorial Park, which is jointly owned by the three municipalities. Operation of the park is governed by the Booth Lake Memorial Park board, which consists of two representatives from each municipality. Use of the park is limited to the residents of the three communities. East Troy is a great place to live and play. Check it out!

Innkeepers Jane and Dave Moyer don’t allow children to stay at their East Troy bed and breakfast. But it’s not because they don’t like kids. It’s to offer couples a chance to get away, even if it’s just overnight. “We want to be the place where they can take a break,” Dave said. “We’re here for them to get a night away.” The beatifically decorated Victorian home on a sleepy, tree-lined street in the Village of East Troy is open year round and is a favorite spot for couples to escape to in the summer months. “It’s who we see the most,” Dave said. “We get business travelers, too, and often we’ll have four couples who rent all the rooms together so they can spend a weekend together visiting and catching up away from the kids.” The Moyers purchased the Pickwick Inn Bed and Breakfast about 12 years ago and said it’s been a joy welcoming guests into their home. “We bought this when our kids were all moving out on their own,” Dave said. “We’ve never really been empty nesters, we’ve had people staying with us all the time.” As the name implies, a night’s stay at the inn includes a full breakfast in the morning – something the Moyers take great pride and pleasure in providing. “It’s all homemade,” Dave said. “Everything’s from scratch and we’re always looking for new recipes and interesting things to serve. “And it’s always good, because if we don’t like it, we won’t serve it.” When the weather allows, breakfast is served on the inn’s screened front porch, which has a dining table and gathering area. “We try to give our guests a relaxing breakfast and we do it out here on the porch as much as we can,” Dave said. “People really enjoy being out here.” The Moyers said the thing they enjoy most about operating the bed and breakfast is meeting the interesting and friendly people who come to stay. And often return. “It’s always exciting to find out who they are, where they come from and why they’re here,” Jane said. Dave and Jane both commented on how much they enjoy breakfast with the guests and how surprising it’s been over the years that the meal goes as well as it does each time. “I think in all our 12 years of doing this, there have only been two times it was

uncomfortable,” Jane said. “It’s definitely surprising to see people who have never met before, sit down to breakfast and watch how they find common interests and get to know each other,” Dave agreed. “We’ve had people who have met here and exchanged contact information and have remained friends for years.” It’s that connection that brings people back, too,” Dave said. “It’s not a hotel and people who stay in a bed and breakfast are more respectful and polite and courteous,” Jane said. “And we have women business travelers who stay with us and have told us they feel safer here.” Dave said one of the special things in each room is the guest book, which is open for guests to sign or not sign as they choose. He said some of the stories that have resulted from people reading the entries and finding who has stayed in the room have been a bit remarkable. “We’ve had people who were reading through the book and found their neighbor stayed in that room a couple of years earlier,” he said. “And once we had an Irish recording artist stay in a room, and I didn’t really know who they were, but someone who stayed in the room shortly after that

read the entry and they knew who they were and all about them.”

About Pickwick Inn

The inn was built at the turn of the century and named after Charles Dickens’ Pickwick Papers. The rooms are named after four famous Victorian-era authors – Dickens, Louisa May Alcott, Agatha Christie and Arthur Conan Doyle. The Victorian home is filled with books and antiques and still has the original carriage house out back. “It was a bed and breakfast when we bought it and we kept the name because we liked it,” Dave said. “And we kept the room names, too, but we’ve completely redecorated everything.” All the rooms have en suite bathrooms and two of the rooms – Charles Dickens and Louisa May Alcott – have two-person whirlpool bathtubs. The whirlpool rooms cost $100 a night on weekdays and $125 a night on weekends during the season and the regular rooms cost $85 and $100 respectively. During the offseason, all rooms are $85 a night. Pickwick Inn Bed and Breakfast is at 2966 Union St., East Troy. For more information, call (262) 642-5529 or visit www.PickwickInn.com.

Our grocery store

BY Tracy EDITOR

Ouellette

For Frank Lueptow, owner of Frank’s Piggly Wiggly, there isn’t a big secret to the thriving business he’s seeing at his grocery stores in East Troy and Elkhorn – it’s just good, old-fashioned hard work delivered with a smile. “It’s the employees,” Lueptow said. “We try to hire the best people and pay them well. And we allow them to perform their jobs. We don’t get in their way.” Combine that philosophy with the highend goods at the stores and the end result is happy customers who spread the word about “their” grocery store. Lueptow said he doesn’t even consider his stores in competition with the area’s big box grocery stores and Walmart. “It’s our produce, our meat, our deli, our bakery – you can’t get those products at

Walmart and Woodman’s,” he said. “They don’t do that, it’s not the way they go to market.” But it has been for Frank and Stephanie Lueptow since they opened their first grocery store in Elkhorn in 1981 and was the driving force behind their expansion into East Troy in 2009 when they bought the old Mielke’s Sentry store and opened Frank’s County Market, which became Frank’s Piggly Wiggly in March 2011. “It’s the higher quality that draws the shoppers in,” Lueptow said. “And we listen to what they want. You have to listen to your customers or you’re out of business.” He said it’s been customer input that has driven many changes in his stores over the years and continues to do so. From adding more “grab-and-go” options in the deli, bakery and meat department to brightening up the interior décor with bold colors like lime green and red, it’s because the

customers have expressed a desire. The East Troy grocery store was remodeled this year and has new freezers, meat cases, produce cases, deli and bakery cases and a bright and colorful décor. The Lueptows also own Frank’s Liquor, which is next to their grocery store in Elkhorn. They employ almost 300 people between their three stores and have become community partners with many local nonprofit organizations, including area food pantries. “I love being a grocer,” Lueptow said. “I love the interaction with the people – the customers and employees – the community.” Frank’s Piggly Wiggly is open from 6 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in East Troy at 3238 W. Main St. and in Elkhorn at 58 W. Market St. For more information, visit frankspigglywiggly.com.

Nostalgia–the secret to barbershop’s success, owner says

BY Tracy Ouellette EDITOR

TRACY OUELLETTE Our Town

The Shave Shop owner Diane Lies shaves Brian Spinner, of East Troy, in the only chair in the shop, which she purchased from a retiring barber. The chair was made in 1941 and hasn’t been restored, just “lovingly cared for,” Lies said.

Lies said she has a lot of clients in the area, but she also has many clients who travel quite a distance to come to her shop. “I have clients from Kenosha, Milwaukee, Clinton – I have one woman who drives five hours to come here,” she said. The Shave Shop serves women and children, too. And while Lies doesn’t have many women on the books, she does see quite a few children. “I have grandpas right down to the grandkids in families,” she said. “They like the nostalgia of it. They remember going to the barber with their dad or grandpa and they want to have that.” Lies said she thinks one of the driving factors in her success is that people nowadays are looking for ways to unwind and relax. They want to take time away from electronic devices and remember the uncomplicated days of their childhood. “I schedule a full half hour for each of my clients so they don’t fell rushed,” she said. “I think sometimes they get uncomfortable when others are in the shop with them and I want them to have this time to themselves. “Every one gets the full service,” she continued. “I have the hot towels, give them massaging shampoos, a neck massage, it’s all about helping them relax – it’s an experience.”

Lies said she wants everyone who comes through her doors to know her shop is a place where they can slow down, disconnect and just relax for a while. “When you can take the time with them, you get to know every bit of them, you become part of their lives.” And Lies, who runs the shop by herself, said as much as she gives her clients, they give her back so much more. “They take care of me, and I’m so grateful for it. They bring me gifts like mustacheshaped earrings and old-fashioned razors to display. One customer even gave me an iPad,” she said. “Everyone asks if I’m going to add on another chair and barber and I tell them no. I’m not here to get rich; I’m here to be happy. And I am – so happy. “I have a sign in my shop that reads, Enter as Strangers – Leave as Friends, and it’s so true. I care about them so much. I love learning about their lives. I love my job.” The Shave Shop is at 2885 Main St. on the downtown square in East Troy. Hours of operation are Tuesday and Wednesday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., Thursday from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m., Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Saturday from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. For more information or to make an appointment, call (262) 684-5390, go to www.theshaveshop.com or find the shop on Facebook.

EAST TROY OUR TOWN 2016-17

t was about two years ago when single mother of three, Diane Lies, decided she wanted to open a barbershop. The 45-year-old licensed barber and cosmetologist from Walworth said she hadn’t cut hair in a couple of years, but wanted to get back into it because she saw how the industry was fading. “I saw the barbers getting older. They were retiring. They were dying off. I wanted to make sure it was still available,” Lies said. Lies, who had mentored under Delavan barber Ron Tesch at Ron’s Barber Shop about five years ago, has been a barber/ cosmetologist for 24 years and said she didn’t want to see the loss of something so dear to her. “It’s such a nostalgic thing,” she said. “It’s something passed down from generation to generation and it’s disappearing and I wanted to change that.” Lies said it wasn’t long after she made the decision to open a new barbershop that one of her friends suggested she consider East Troy for the location. Not long after that, another friend sent her a picture of the Barr Building on the downtown square. The Barr Building was rebuilt in 2014 after the former barbershop and apartments were heavily damaged in an April 26, 2013, fire which destroyed the corner building at 2877 Main St. “It happened so fast,” Lies said. “One day I said ‘I’m going to open a barbershop’ and three months later I was here. “After losing the barbershop on the square, there was a need for one here,” she continued. “It’s a great little space right on the square. It’s so easy and convenient.” Lies said there wasn’t much down time from when she set up the shop and opened the door until the clients began filling her books. “I had maybe one to two weeks where it was a little slow, but after that it just took off,” she said. In the 10 months since The Shave Shop opened, Lies went from having no clientele to having more than 700 customers who frequent her establishment. “I’ve been so blessed,” she said. “I’m so happy I chose East Troy. When they lost their barber there was a hole, when that pole started turning outside, they were so happy I was here.”
