Ladies ON THE Links A new take on the play date at Geneva National
Girls’ night out has a whole new swing to it at Geneva National. Fondly known as Ladies on the Links, this sporty social hour brings together women of all golfing abilities Thursday nights in the summer. “If you’ve ever wanted to try golf or just want to do something different with your friends, this is the place,” Geneva National teaching professional Heidi Haas said. “You get to spend a relaxing hour-and-a-half with friends in a beautiful setting doing exercise that doesn’t feel like exercise.” The evening warms up with 30 minutes of yoga to get your golf muscles in the groove while enhancing your range of motion and flexibility. Then, depending on the day, the group moves over to the range to practice driving, chipping, and other fundamentals. The rest of the time is spent out on the course and then to the terrace for drinks.
“Ladies on the Links is for all levels – from the beginner to the advanced player. And it doesn’t matter if you can’t make it every week, because Heidi works on a different stroke each week,” golfer Cindy Hill said. “You get a lot of opportunity to drill that stroke – whether it’s driving or chipping – so that when you get out and play the game, the pro tips are still fresh in your mind.” Since coming to Geneva National two years ago, Haas has extended the program’ season to accommodate increasing golfer-girl demand. Even better, she’s picked up on a family trend: more moms putting around with their daughters. “How awesome is it to be able to spend a couple of hours unplugged with your daughter,” Haas said. “Being outdoors is not a new concept for this, but golf itself provides the perfect platform to reconnect. People forget about that.” Home to the power deal,
the greens are also known to be a place of business and networking. “Golf is so relational – you can play it with your family and friends as well as your colleagues,” Haas said. “Golf is a culture and lifestyle. And it’s a perfect sport for women because you can own it – the game is up to you and the choices you make.” Another – albeit a tad trivial and a lot trendy – reason to play is that women’s golf apparel has really teed it up a notch. Just take a peek at Geneva National’s pro shop, outfitted to the nines with fashion-forward skorts, golf dresses, and fitted tops. “There are no more boxy golf shirts,” Haas said. Not to worry if you’ve not geared up, Haas added, as most women wear athletic apparel and either golf or tennis shoes. (Hint: Just avoid denim.) Geneva National also has spare clubs for the ultra-amateur.
Open to the public, Ladies on the Links runs every Thursday (except July 25) through Aug. 13. A $30 fee per date includes teaching, greens fees, cart, practice balls and two post-play drinks in the clubhouse. Simply make a reservation with Haas and pay in the pro shop before the 5:30-7 p.m. girls’ night
begins. For more information, ping Haas at hhaas@gnresort.com or call her at (262) 245-7000, ext. 521. Geneva National Resort is at 1221 Geneva National Ave. South in Lake Geneva. For more information, visit genevanationalresort.com.

Take the Lake Geneva walking tour Legends and Landmarks: A Walking Tour of Lake Geneva will be offered at 6:30 p.m. Thursdays through Aug. 20. The tours, which begin June 18, gather in front of and depart from the Riviera building at 812 Wrigley Drive. Cost is $8 per person or $15 for two people. The walking tour of downtown Lake Geneva and the historic Maple Park neighborhood was developed by the staff of Black Point Estate and in conjunction with the Lake Geneva Preservation Commission and the Geneva Lake Museum. The 90-minute guided tour will cover about 1 1/2 miles. “The tour will focus on not only the architecture but many of the colorful personalities and events that make Lake Geneva a special place,” said Dave Desimone, director of Black Point Estate. “For a town of this size, the diversity and quality of architecture is truly impressive. This tour will help to highlight some of it.” Heritage tourism is one of the fastest-growing segments in the tourism industry, Desimone said. Lake Geneva is graced with many beautiful buildings as well as a colorful and interesting past. The goal of the tour is to help bring the city’s cultural heritage to light, he said. “With that in mind, we’ve tried to develop a tour that appeals to both local citizens and tourists,” Desimone said. On the tour, participants will learn which buildings were designed by famous architects, which have a colorful past and which significant structures were lost to neglect or the wrecking ball. Tickets can be purchased in advance by calling Black Point Estate at (262) 248-1888 or purchased the day of the tour directly from the tour guide.

HUNT CLUB receives TripAdvisor
CERTIFICATE OF EXCELLENCE
For the second year in a row, Geneva National Resort’s Hunt Club Steakhouse has garnered the TripAdvisor certificate of Excellence. “I’m continually impressed with the way our culinary and service teams consistently deliver a first-class dining experience, never slowing in their pursuit to improve upon taste and presentation that is already exceptional,” said Hunt Club manager Martha Militello. “We are so grateful to our customers for recognizing the passion we put into each dish and for taking the time to share their impressions. For us, there is no greater seal of approval than being recognized by our customers.”
The rustic steakhouse is lodged in the historic Crane mansion. It has received 2014 and 2015 TripAdvisor accolades, eight Wine Spectator awards and an Open Table Diners’ Choice award. According to TripAdvisor, travelers come to the website to plan and book the perfect trip, and the certificate of eExcellence celebrates establishments, like the Hunt Club Steakhouse, that deliver spot-on service and stellar customer reviews. Among the posts on TripAdvisor are: “I love the ambience in The Hunt Club! When my girlfriends asked me where I wanted to go for my birthday celebration, I
didn’t even hesitate. We are always treated special.” “Make the Hunt Club a stop after golf for a great martini and an excellent meal. The decor is upscale casual and the hamburger with truffle fries is out of this world. From appetizer to dessert, this venue does not disappoint.” “Outstanding service from the minute we arrived. Food was phenomenal and the wine list was unbelievable! It was by far my best birthday dinner I’ve ever had, and I can’t wait to go back again! “Wonderful steak, excellent service and great views. Don’t miss the shrimp cocktail! Perfect romantic evening. Enjoy!”
“When you step out of your vehicle you will notice the peaceful escape from other busy restaurants. The wine was wonderfully suggested and served. My ribeye was the best I’ve had to this day, full of flavor that melts in your mouth. No need to ask for any steak sauce, because you would miss the skill that was placed into each piece of meat.” To view the Hunt Club’s seasonal menu or make reservations, call (262) 245.7200 or visit genevanationalresort.com. Motorists can access the Hunt Club Steakhouse via the entrance to Geneva National by turning right at the business center and following the frontage road.
Geneva National opens banquet room
Geneva National Golf Club this month will unveil its 4,900-square-foot, fully renovated Legends Room overlooking the resort’s fairways and Lake Como. The room is used for off-site meetings, wedding ceremonies and receptions and other private gatherings. The renovation increases seating to 160 guests and offers a mid-sized room option in addition to the club’s Lake Geneva Room for up to 120 guests and its grand ballroom, which seats more than 300. The stand-alone event space was designed by Beloit-based Corporate Contractors Inc. and features an exposed brick wall, white-washed tin ceiling, oiled bronze chandeliers and sconces, and textured charcoal-toned carpet accented by an oak entryway. Enlarged floor-to-ceiling windows frame the 18th hole of the resort’s Arnold Palmer course and offer southeastern exposure. “We already had the best banquet views in the area,” said Stacey Syverson, membership director at Geneva National. “So our goal was to further set ourselves apart by offering the most uniquely modern interior in the Lake Geneva area.” Syverson said the room’s fresh take and neutral palette meets the needs of today’s bride, complementing any celebration’s color scheme while reflecting the lush feel of the verdant and wooded Wisconsin countryside. The men’s and women’s lounges also were restored with glass mosaic backsplashes and granite countertops and a separate bridal suite with an elongated white stone vanity, mirrors, a sideboard for mimosas and catered treats, seating and a flat screen television. In addition, doors on both sides of the suite open with secure keypads to be used by the bride and wedding coordinator. “We were thrilled to partner with Geneva National on the vivid transformation of the Legend’s Room,” said Julia Randles, architectural designer at Corporate Contractors. “The space was completely restyled, combining old world charm with modern trends, resulting in a special events venue like no other.” The Legends Room is named for Geneva National’s architects, legendary golf masters Arnold Palmer, Gary Player and Lee Trevino, who each designed 18 holes for an opportunity to play three champion-built courses at one resort. More information about the Legends Room can be obtained by calling the Geneva National’s sales team at (262) 245-7046.

Boating on E10
Good news about your fun on the water There are more than 12 million recreational boats in the United States. If you are a boat owner, it can be smooth sailing if you take care of the motor and follow the proper guidance when it comes to fuel. While many boaters have heard warnings that ethanol cannot be used in boat engines, nothing could be farther from the truth. A 10 percent ethanol mix (E10), which is used in almost all transportation fuel nationwide, can be safely used in marine engines today, including two-stroke engines, four-stroke engines, inboard motors and outboard motors. In fact, a 10 percent ethanol mix has been approved for years by marine engine manufacturers such as Honda, Kawasaki, Mercury Marine, OMC (Johnson/ Evinrude), Pleasurecraft, Tigershark (Artco), Tracker and Yamaha. “There is a myth out there that 10 percent ethanol is not good for marine engines, but we have been operating for over 20 years and have not had any issues with it whatsoever … There are absolutely no problems running on 10 percent ethanol,” Vernon Barfield, former Technical Chairman and Vice President of the National Boat Racing Association, said. What about E15? Boaters should remember that although E10 is fine for marine engines, E15 is not approved for use in boats. E15 is approved by the Environmental Protection Agency only for use in flex-fuel vehicles and vehicles model year 2001 and newer. If you have any questions or concerns about what fuel to put in your boat, consult your owner’s manual or contact your engine manufacturer. Ethanol is a high-octane fuel additive that gives your engine a boost on the water and helps achieve optimal engine performance. It also helps reduce emissions and keeps lakes and rivers clean for future boating adventures. In addition, there are other ways to keep your engine going strong. For example, you should always check the engine before going out on the water for any water contamination and ensure your engine has a tight-fitting cap. Engines respond poorly to water no matter what type of fuel goes into your tank. Also, keep up with routine maintenance and ensure that the boat is properly stored in winter. For more information, visit www.EthanolRFA.org. (NAPS)

With the plethora of lakes in the area, boating is a popular summertime activity. It’s not necessary to own a boat to enjoy the lakes; there are rental sites available. If new to the boating world, however, it’s a good idea to take a Department of Natural Resources approved boating course.
Summer like a celebrity Four easy ways to go boating
Perusing social media or flipping through a magazine, it’s common to see famous faces like George Clooney or Taylor Swift cruising around on fancy boats, but guess what? You don’t have to be rich and famous to enjoy boating. Get your feet wet this summer just like the stars without breaking the bank. The National Marine Manufacturers Association reports 71 percent of boat owners have an annual household income of less than $100,000. That means boating is more accessible than you may think – just ask the 87.3 million Americans who go boating each year. “It’s a common misperception that boating is mega yachting, but that’s not the case – 95 percent of the 12 million boats on the water in the U.S. are under 26 feet in length,” says Carl Blackwell, president of Discover Boating. “Whether it’s fishing, wakesurfing, sailing, riding personal watercraft or cruising – there are ways for everyone to go boating on a budget and make memories out on the water.” Whether you’re planning a vacation or looking for a new hobby close to home, Discover Boating has insider tips for getting on the water: Test the waters Rental options can be found on most waterways and provide access to a variety of boat types on an hourly or daily basis. Rental outfitters provide a tutorial on how to operate the boat, safety instructions and suggestions on where to go. New to market are peer-to-peer rentals that go directly through boat owners and can include captains for hire and insurance.
