Abbey to host vintage boat show The Geneva Lakes Antique and Classic Boat Show, featuring vintage watercrafts from around the country, will take place in Fontana on Sept. 26 and 27 with pre-events beginning Sept. 25. The event is presented by the Blackhawk Chapter of the Antique and Classic Boat Society and hosted by The Abbey Resort. Held annually in the harbor of the Abbey Marina on the western end of Geneva Lake, the boat show allows land lovers, enthusiastic boaters and everyone in between the opportunity to enjoy the event. While the majority of participating boats have a homeport registration in Wisconsin or Illinois, regular entries hail from as far away as Florida and California. Participating boats registered for the upcoming 2015 show include antique and classic runabouts, as well as utility, lapstrake, outboard and Streblow boats.
Music in the park
All registered classic and antique boats will be on display in the Abbey Marina from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. both days of the event. A parade of participating boats is scheduled for 4 p.m. Sept. 26. Viewing of the displays and the parade is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to attend to enjoy the boats, live music, food and local vendors. A favorite part of the show for many registrants is competing for awards, including Best Pre-War, Best PostWar, and Most Historic. Additionally, a People’s Choice Award as voted upon by attendees will be at 2 p.m. Sept. 27. Additional events including private tours, receptions, and an awards dinner are available for a fee through advance registration. YACHTING CHAMPIONSHIP takes place on Geneva Lake
World, national and collegiate sailing champions competed in various classes in the 2015 Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship on Geneva Lake from Aug. 19 to 23. Results of the races were not available at press time. The regatta was the first major event at the new Buddy Melges Sailing Center in Fontana and featured 650 sailors and 175 yachts. Fourteen Inland Lake Yachting Association Hall of Fame members were honored at the association’s regatta dinner Aug 21 including Buddy Melges. Racers competed on 38-foot A-Scow, 28-foot E-Scow, 20foot C-Scow, 16-foot MC-Scow and Melges 17-foot class racing sailboats for the 2015 Inland Lake Yachting Association Annual Championship top prizes. The championship regatta, first held in 1889, features some
of the fastest mono-hull sailboats in the world, raced by worldclass sailors from throughout the country competing for some of the most prestigious trophies in all of sports. The annual regatta was held at the United States’ newest sailing facility, the Buddy Melges Sailing Center, completed this spring on eight acres on Geneva Lake. There were 175 boats competing in five classes from 30 U.S. yacht clubs, as far away as New York and Florida. This was the 15th championship the Lake Geneva Yacht Club has hosted. Inland Lake Yachting Association Championship favorites included skippers Pat Hughes, Tom Burton and Rob Evans from the Minnetonka Yacht Club in the 20-boat A-Scow fleet. Hughes was the association’s A-Class 2012 winner, and Burton placed second in the 2014 Inland Lake Yacht Association A-Scow
competition. He and Evans are nine-time Inland Lake Yacht Association champions and collegiate champions from the University California-Irvine and University of Hawaii respectively. Evans is also a world champion in ice and snow kiting. Lake Geneva Yacht Club favorites in the A-Scow class included Vincent Porter, Tom Freytag and Terrence Blanchard. Porter is a six-time Inland Lake Yacht Association champion who won the 2014 A-Class championship. Freytag is the 2010 A-Scow National Champ, and Blanchard is the 2013 and 2011 association A-Scow champion. In the 55-boat E-Scow fleet, favorites competing from Lake Minnetonka were Chris Jewett, Tim Krech, Tom Burton and Erik Bowers. Jewett received National Collegiate Athletic Association All-America Honorable Mention at the University of Hawaii and
was the 2005 Inland Lake Yacht Association E-Class champion. Krech is a three-time association champion. Burton placed fourth in the 2014 association E-Scow competition, and Bowers is an NCAA collegiate sailor at the College of Charleston, S.C., a 2016 Olympic Trials Laser

Man organizes dinner to raise funds for family touched by tragedy By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
S
hawn Panyk is connecting his faith with his finances by having a spaghetti dinner benefit for a friend whose wife was killed and son was hospitalized after a car crash in Rock County in June. Through his membership in Thrivent Financial, Panyk, a member of The River church in Delavan, is using the company’s Action Teams program to raise funds for the medical care of his friend’s son. Panyk befriended Justin Border, of Lake Geneva, about three years ago in a gaming group. Border’s eventual wife, Jessica –“Jessie” – also participated in the group and became a friend of Panyk’s. On June 13, the couple and Border’s 5- and 8-year-old sons from a previous marriage were driving north on Interstate 43 in Beloit when Justin Border stopped to help a disabled vehicle that was in the center of the northbound lanes facing south, according to a Janesville Gazette article. Another vehicle, a minivan, had already stopped at the scene to offer assistance. As Border was stopped with the vehicle’s hazard lights on behind the minivan, a semi truck hit the disabled vehicle that was in the roadway, according to the article, apparently slamming it into the minivan and Border’s vehicle. Border reported blacking out at that point, and a passenger in the minivan reported the van being struck from behind. A 20-year-old Janesville woman, who was driving the disabled vehicle, was arrested for drunken driving and charged with homicide by intoxicated driving in Rock County Circuit Court. Jessie Border, 26, died as a result
of the crash, and both children were injured. The younger boy, Nathan, broke his arm, and the older boy, Owen, suffered a head injury and remains under medical care, Panyk said. Justin Border is a veteran having served five years in the U.S. Marines and is a Badger High School graduate, Panyk said. He described Jessie as “den motherish” and said both were “such quality people.” Panyk decided to use his twiceyearly opportunity as a Thrivent Financial member to form an Action Team to raise money for Owen’s care. The program gives Panyk $250 to use as seed money to conduct the fundraiser. As it turned out, members of Panyk’s team donated most of the items needed for the event, and Panyk will use the $250 to promote the event. Although the major items were donated without the seed money, Panyk said if not for the jump-start from Thrivent, he wouldn’t have had the courage to tackle the endeavor. Panyk hopes to draw 400 people to the spaghetti dinner at Immanuel Lutheran Church in Lake Geneva on Sept. 19. Immanuel Lutheran donated use of the space for the event, and another member of Panyk’s gaming group donated the food. The event will raise funds through admission to the dinner and a raffle and auction. Tickets are $12 for adults, $8 for children 4 to 12 years old and free for children 3 years old or younger. Serving times will be on the hour beginning at 3 p.m. with the last seating at 7 p.m. The event will include raffles and silent auctions, and anyone who buys tickets ahead of time will be entered to win an hourly door prize. Guests can visit the Border Family Benefit and Spaghetti Dinner page on Facebook or visit borderfamilybenefit. com for details.

A benefit dinner is scheduled Sept. 19 to benefit the Border family – Justin (from left), Owen, 8, Nathan, 5, and the late Jessica. The family was involved in a car crash in Beloit on June 13 that killed Jessica Border and left Owen Border with a head injury that requires ongoing medical attention.
THRIVENT FOCUSES ON FAITH AND FINANCES
Action teams allow members to live generously By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
Members of Thrivent Financial – people who purchase insurance from the non-profit organization or use its financial services – have the opportunity to use essentially “free money” to benefit the community or their church. Thrivent members can implement action plans using a portion of the premium they pay for insurance that would otherwise be used to pay corporate taxes, said Josh Duesterbeck, a consultant with the company. Because Thrivent is a non-profit organization, it doesn’t pay corporate taxes and instead those funds go back to the members to be used in the community – often to churches or other charitable organizations. Members can use either a $250 gift card or 50 t-shirts to promote or raise funds for an organization or cause of their choice. Thrivent is a national organization of Christians that helps its members be wise with money and live generously, according to the organization whose theme is
“connecting faith and finances for good.” Thrivent has local offices in Delavan, 1407 Racine St., Unit E., and Burlington, 400 N. Pine Street. “We connect people’s faith to their finances,” Duesterbeck said. The company implemented action teams a few years ago. An action teams is a volunteer program available to Thrivent members focused on getting a team together in service. The program allows Thrivent members to live generously and take action on a cause they are passionate about. Members bring together a volunteer team of family, friends and neighbors to conduct one-time fundraisers, service activities or educational events. Members can visit thrivent.com/ action team to get information or apply for a project. They will need to log in with their thrivent.com user name and password to access and complete the application. Applications should be made at least 21 days before the project so the company can deliver a Thrivent action kit to facilitate the project. Within three to five days, applicants receive an email notifying
them whether their projects are approved. If the project is approved, an applicant will receive a $250 Visa credit card intended as seed money. The idea is that money will be used to generate more funds toward the member’s cause, Duesterbeck said. The $250 can’t simply be gifted or granted, it must be used to kick start the project. “The idea is to multiply itself,” Duesterbeck said. Members can lead up to two projects per year.
