When the weather warms up, it’s all about relaxing outdoors. But it’s possible you’ve neglected upkeep on your home’s outdoor spaces during the chilly months of winter. To enjoy yourself more this season, take time to spruce up your yard. Here are some quick tips.

EXTERIOR Safety tips for outdoor spaces Design the perfect deck Select the right garage door Manufactured stone tips

Page 5 Page 5 Page 15 Page 18

Do a survey Take a walk around the perimeter of your patio, deck and yard to survey what needs to be cleaned, repaired or replaced. Did potted plants and lawn ornaments survive the cooler months? Are outdoor light fixtures functioning? Are fallen branches littering the yard? Make a mental to-do list. Deep clean Like interior spaces, periodic deep cleans are necessary outdoors too. But don’t waste your leisure time. “With the right tools you can work smart, not hard,” said Jeff Devlin, host on a popular home improvement channel. “A heavyduty cleaner, such as Mean Green Degreaser, not only works indoors, but is ideal for my tough outdoor cleaning jobs.” Devlin recommends using the Super Strength multi-surface

formula – which is lab-tested to clean and remove grease, grime, mildew, dirt, and oil more effectively than its competitors – to clean and remove mildew from patios, outdoor furniture, concrete, composite and wood fences and siding, as well as to clean and degrease tools, lawn equipment and grills. Use it as a concentrated spray or diluted solution. Clean with a brush or sponge. “For your toughest jobs, add it to your pressure washer,” Devlin said. Helpful cleaning tips can be found at MeanGreenDegreaser. com. Routine maintenance Perform routine upkeep to keep items from falling into disrepair or becoming overgrown or unkempt. Sweep walkways and your deck regularly, especially if they are situated under trees. Promote a healthy lawn by mowing it regularly, never removing more than one-third of the grass blade. Keep gutters devoid of leaves and debris so that water does not collect in your yard or at the base of your home’s structure. Rinse patio furniture, umbrellas and awnings using water or a diluted cleaner.

Don’t skimp on safety when planning your deck Expert tips for creating a safe outdoor space

When dreaming of your at-home outdoor oasis, safety may not be top-of-mind. But when making decking decisions, a key element to enjoying your retreat for years to come is ensuring it is safe and structurally sound. The experts at Trex, the world’s No. 1 decking and railing brand and leader in high-performance, low-maintenance outdoor living products, offer the following tips for building a safe and worry-free deck. Know your codes Codes for building materials were established to help ensure quality and safety. The primary reference for deck requirements is the International Residential Code. Use this resource to confirm all your deck materials are code-compliant and deliver the highest levels of quality and peace of mind. For an easy guide, check out this Professional Deck Builder article written by a code official. Build a solid foundation The substructure is the foundation that supports your deck, not to mention your family and friends. Here, again, pressuretreated lumber can warp, rot, twist, split and decay over time. *From 2003-2007, more than 20,000 injuries resulted from a structural failure or collapse of decks with a wooden substructure. Designed specifically for the outdoors, Trex Elevations Steel Deck Framing System is the only steel-framing product in the U.S. to be deemed IRC compliant for exterior use. In addition to unmatched structural integrity, steel improves the overall aesthetics of a deck both above and below. Choose durable decking Decks are exposed to the elements 365 days a year, seven days a week, 24 hours a day. Over time, wood can begin to rot, crack and splinter, increasing the risks of injury and structural failure. To avoid these issues, consider a wood-alternative decking material, such as composite, which offers superior stability that won’t weaken under harsh weather or heavy foot traffic. Composite boards also deliver a smooth deck surface,

Get creative, but don’t let materials limit your design. By following manufacturer instructions, you can shape contemporary materials like composite decking into stunning curves that will have neighbors commenting on your deck for years to come.

Design the perfect deck 5 must-ask questions before you start

A backyard should be enjoyed to its fullest extent. But all too often, homes lack enticing outdoor living areas. One way to give your outdoor space a retreat is to add a new deck. A welldesigned deck can extend your living space, make your yard more functional and, best of all, provide a comfortable space for family and friends to enjoy the great outdoors. If you’re ready to build a new deck and turn your backyard into your favorite “room” in the house, here are five must-ask questions to help you design the perfect addition.

1. What do you want your deck to do?

FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

For maximum stability and longevity, opt for a steel substructure such as Trex Elevations Steel Deck Framing System.

A deck can boost the value of your yard, but only if it fits the way you live. So, before tackling a deck project, set aside time to think about how you plan to use your new space. Whether you’re designing a multi-level deck for entertaining or a small, peaceful getaway, a little forethought can go a long way to ensuring your deck suits your family’s lifestyle. For example, if outdoor entertaining is what your deck is all about, an expansive deck with multiple level changes, handrails and furniture can streamline traffic flow and define areas for eating, socializing and relaxing. If a peaceful deck-escape is more your style, a free-standing deck tucked into some foliage in your backyard with a screening

trellis and a water feature can create a perfectly restful retreat.

2. How will you access your deck? As you evaluate your deck’s function, keep transitions in mind. The easier your deck is to access, the more you’ll get out of it. Decks positioned near frequently used openings, such as the kitchen door, make it simple to travel from one area to the other and are perfect for entertaining. Additional pathway features, like decorative stones and ground lighting, can help guests transition smoothly between your deck and yard. If you have a raised or multi-level deck, be sure to think about stairs and railings. While these features make it safe to move between your house and backyard, they can also add visual distinction to your deck. Curved stairs, decked out walkways, backlit risers and decorative glass panels can all showcase your creativity while guiding visitors through outdoor living spaces. 3. Is your deck near water?

If you envision lounging waterside, now is the time to think about moisture-resistant decking.

How to get a

great lawn in less time

A stunning lawn is the trademark of most proud homeowners. After all, the front yard is the first thing visitors and passersby see. But achieving and maintaining the perfect landscape can be time consuming without the right tools. Want more of your weekends back? Experts say achieving professional-level results in less time starts with the equipment you use to do the job. Take stock of the tools in your garage or shed. Are they up to the task? If you’re spending too much time on the yard, it may be time to make some key upgrades. The right lawnmower, for example, “is not just an investment in the beauty of your property, it’s an investment in your quality of life,” says Judy Altmaier, general manager of Exmark, a leading manufacturer of mowers and other lawn equipment. “A faster mower means more free time, plain and simple.” With that principle in mind, here are a few insights about what to look for when replacing an older mower with a new, more efficient model. • Maneuverability – Between trees, flower beds and other landscape features, a mower should be easy to maneuver, so you can mow closer and spend less time with the trimmer. • Quality of cut – Not all mowers offer the same quality of cut. When choosing a new mower, take this factor into consideration, as well as the type of lawn and grass you have. • Durability – A durable mower will include features such as welded, fabricated cutting decks, commercial engines and heavy-duty welded, tubular steel unibody frames. For quick guidance, consider taking a cue from those who make a living by being more efficient in the yard – landscape professionals. “These days, it’s safe to say that zero-turn riding mowers have become the tool of choice among landscape professionals,” says Altmaier. Those from Exmark, for example, are available at various price points and offer great mower productivity, power and durability. For more information, visit www.Exmark.com. (STATEPOINT)

After months of winter weather, you’re ready to relax on your beautiful green lawn once again, and getting there is easier than you think.

you can do to improve the look of your lawn today You’ve waited all winter for the chance to transform your lawn from that drab, frozen tundra into the lush, green oasis you know it can be. But this transformation doesn’t happen overnight, and you can’t expect Mother Nature to take care of everything herself. Getting your dream yard is going to require a little work on your part, but the rewards are worth the efforts and as you’ll see, even the smallest changes can have a big impact. Follow each of the five simple tips below and you’ll be enjoying your yard all season long: Water more heavily, less often When it comes to watering your lawn, less is more, provided you’re talking about watering frequency and not water amount. Instead of several light sprinklings, give your lawn one thorough watering (about an inch a week) and you’ll ensure more of the water is absorbed by your lawn instead of being lost to evaporation.

FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

This season, give yourself more time and energy to enjoy the yard you so painstakingly maintain. Experts say achieving professional-level results in less time starts with the equipment you use to do the job.

Cut right, cut smart When it comes to lawn care, having the right mower makes all the difference. Husqvarna lawn mowers with high performance cutting decks will give superior cut quality and performance and most are capable of bagging, mulching or straight discharge. If your lawn is rough or hilly, a self-propelled drive system can take the work out of mowing. Some models now even have capability of fourwheel drive to further reduce effort.

Trim back overgrown trees and bushes The most beautiful yard in the world can be quickly overshadowed – literally and figuratively – by unkempt trees and bushes. How far you trim back your trees and bushes is a matter of preference, but any dead branches should be removed. After that, make sure you trim uniformly and clean up when you’re done to finish that polished look. Take the time to aerate One of the most effective ways to support new grass growth is to aerate your lawn. Using a mechanical or manual aerator, you can punch small holes in the soil, allowing much-needed water, air and nutrients to make it down to the root structure, supporting future grass development and long-term yard health. Get motivated to mulch Regular mulching reduces weeds while promoting the health and growth of your lawn by returning needed nutrients back to the soil. In addition, because mulch clippings are comprised of 85 percent water and just 5 percent nitrogen, leaving them on your lawn can satisfy as much as 25 percent of your fertilizer needs. So the next time you feel the need to bag, opt to mulch instead. Apply the tips above and you’ll be able to create the yard that’s perfect for everything you have planned for the season. Tips to make spring cleaning safer and easier If you love the results of spring cleaning, but not the process, it could be that the methods and tools you’re using to get the job done are making the work harder than it needs to be. To get your to-dos done with less effort, consider these tips.

Make it fun

Before you even get started, take steps to prepare yourself for an afternoon or day of chores. Turn on some music to motivate you. Open the windows to get some fresh air. Eat a solid meal so you’re fueled for the tasks at hand. You’ll already be in a much better mood.

Avoid harsh chemicals

One of the less savory aspects of cleaning can be the exposure of one’s eyes and skin to harsh and irritating chemical formulas. But it doesn’t have to be this way. In some cases, you can get the same results with natural alternatives and, at times, just water. For example, microfiber is designed to pick up and trap dust, dirt, fingerprints, and grime from furniture, woodwork, and cabinetry without scratching surfaces. Brands such as Casabella offer an array of cleaning supplies made of this material, including cloths, chenille mitts, mops and dusters, which offer deeper cleaning with just a little bit of water.

Avoid reaching

Cleaning can be a pain in the neck – and back, and everywhere else for that matter. Treat your cleaning like a workout. Stretch your neck, shoulders and torso beforehand. Also, look for implements that reach so you don’t have to. For example, a versatile tool like the Everywhere Duster, with its washable microfiber head, pivots to work in hard-to-reach nooks and crannies from floor to ceiling, such as window sills and molding.

Work smart

Mopping can be a tricky task when you’re using a conventional mop and bucket. Rather than push an everincreasingly dirty mop around your floors, seek out smart cleaning tools that work for you. A built-in washing spinner at the bottom of the bucket can help keep things cleaner as you go. For example, the Spin Cycle Mop features two spinning mechanisms – one to wash and one to dry – so you don’t drip dirty water on the floors that you’re attempting to clean. Use microfiber cloths and dusters that hold onto the dirt they gather so you don’t leave a trail of dust as you move from room to room. These materials are machine washable, so your postcleaning tasks are a cinch as well. For more cleaning tips, visit www.Casabella.com. (STATEPOINT)

Tips to spruce up for

less

SPRING IS A GREAT TIME TO GET ORGANIZED If you’re looking to make a big change around the house, tidying up can make all the difference. Spruce up your life – from your wardrobe to home décor – with these tips from the discount experts at Dollar General.

Audit your closet

Out with the old and in with the new. As the seasons change, it’s necessary to make room for a new wardrobe. First, go through your closet and select the items you haven’t worn lately and plan to either donate or give to a friend. Consider consigning high-quality garments. The money you earn can be put toward your wardrobe budget. Only after you’ve made space should you go shopping. You can search for new seasonal apparel without cluttering your house. Be sure to purchase items that are interchangeable, allowing you to mix and match outfits for different seasons, while saving space and money.

Home cleaning tips FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

The fresh feel that spring cleaning affords does not need to come at a great cost to your happiness. With a few tweaks to your routine, you can make it simpler and more enjoyable.

There’s such a rewarding feeling of accomplishment after cleaning a house from top to bottom. Instead of waiting to clean the entire house occasionally all at once, take the initiative of completing easy tasks on a more regular basis. The work will seem manageable and you’ll keep your home cleaner overall this way.

Here are a few easy tasks to help you get started: • Eliminate odors in your kitchen by setting a bowl of coffee grounds inside your fridge; • Clean your dishwasher by pouring white vinegar in the detergent dispenser and running a cycle; and • Absorb leaks and odors at the bottom of your trashcan by placing a handful of newspapers at the bottom.

Home décor and organization

Spruce up your house with a little décor. As you declutter and organize, have fun by selecting new throw pillows, blankets, colorful accessories and new pictures to place around the house. Simply rearranging your furniture can also change the mood of your space. A few small changes can make a big difference.

Digital coupons

Save on your sprucing by utilizing online digital coupons. Routinely check your favorite retail stores for hot deals on supplies for cleaning, decorating and organizing. One retailer making it easy to save on everyday items is Dollar General. Coupons are available at dg.com/coupons, and are a quick and easy way to save money on great products.

to your home

You may feel locked into the style you inherited when you purchased your house. But you have more power than you think to transform your reality home into your dream home. To make a big style impact, consider these upgrades and projects:

Stunning curb appeal

Don’t settle for a drab or standard home exterior, particularly when it comes to your roof. A beautiful, colorful update will enhance your home’s exterior design and boost curb appeal. For long-term durability, consider a polymer slate or shake roofing product, like those from DaVinci Roofscapes, which are offered in 50 standard colors and a variety of striking color blends. However, picking the right exterior color scheme and style can be daunting without guidance, say experts. “Many homeowners are afraid to shake things up with color because they don’t want to make a mistake,” says Kate Smith, a color trend forecaster with Sensational Color. Luckily, free resources can provide guidance and tips on understanding your home’s exterior features and how to play off them with color accents. For example, Smith has written a free 36-page guide, “FRESH Color Schemes for Your Home Exterior.” The guide explores color options for seven different home styles and eases the process of choosing color palettes to complement your home exterior. Painting a bedroom green can help create a calm, peaceful space. Gallery Green from Sherwin Williams pulls this room together in a fresh, colorful way.

to create the serene bedroom of your dreams As life gets busier, a bedroom becomes more than a sleeping space – it’s an escape to a calmer, more serene world that rests the mind as well as the body. To create your own in-house getaway, use these easy tips to “calmify” your bedroom and transform it into a more beautiful and restful retreat. Sink into some silence. Create white noise to block out sounds that disturb the solitude. Install a stylish ceiling fan with gently whirring blades to give the room a languid, tropical ambiance that will help you relax.

Paint the room green

FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

If you’re unsatisfied with your house, consider making key upgrades and replacements that will add elegance, beauty and a touch of your own personality.

Studies show green has a calming effect when used as a main color for decorating. A recent homeowner study conducted by Sherwin-Williams found that more than 60 percent of homeowners would consider adding shades of green into their home, with more than half saying they would use it to paint an entire room. “The color green is symbolic of balance, nature, spring and rebirth,” says Sue Wadden, director of color marketing at Sherwin-Williams. “Because it has such positive connections in the mind, I especially like to see Gallery Green (SW 0015) used in spaces seeking balance and harmony, such as bedrooms.”

Add fresh houseplants

Living things, like leafy or flowering plants, make a bedroom feel more down to earth. Visit

your local garden center and purchase a variety of houseplants, large or small, to freshen the air.

Fluff up your bedding

Give your bed a fresh new look and feel. Buy yourself some soft, cool white sheets. Add a featherlike, comfortable bedspread or quilt, and top it with multiple pillows of all shapes and sizes for a well-rested night’s sleep.

Lower the lighting

Adjusting the lighting can completely alter the atmosphere in a bedroom. Install a light dimmer or add a programmable timer that turns lights off and on automatically, to help lull you to sleep, yet brighten the room when it’s time to get up.

Dress the windows

Treat yourself to new window treatments. Add to the easy-breezy feel of the room by purchasing fresh, flowing curtains or sleek new blinds that can be easily adjusted to block out the daylight.

Simplify for serenity’s sake

Eliminate clutter to keep it out of sight – and out of mind. Add cabinetry with built-in organization features like drawer inserts. Add more shelving in the closet. Use baskets and pottery to keep small items contained. Having everything in its place will help you feel free to relax in your beautiful new bedroom.

features to bid farewell to forever. Your bathroom should be more than just a functional space; it should be an oasis from busy, stressful days. Whether you are looking for customary bathroom elements or a spa-like whirlpool system, seek out a collection, rather than a la carte replacements, to achieve a coordinated look. For example, the Affordable Style Designer Series suites from Mansfield Plumbing, come in a variety of unified traditional and modern designs. If you want a bit more from your bathroom, consider new products, such as the MicroDerm Therapeutic Bath, which silently infuses millions of oxygen-rich microbubbles into bathwater to relax, clean and exfoliate skin. A touch of elegance Give your interior spaces privacy and elegance by rethinking windows. In key rooms, consider replacing standard windows with privacy windows. Decorative glass windows add character to a space because they become the view. They serve as their own artwork for the room with the added benefit of providing privacy in the home. Those from Hy-Lite include square, geometric and oval shaped windows in both fixed and operable styles and in various sizes, so they can be used as a focal point in a room or to create a striking accent wall of windows. Create an eye-catching space in the kitchen with acrylic block windows, or complement your home’s architectural style with one of the fashionable silkscreened windows featured in their Home Designer Collection. If you’re unsatisfied with your house, consider making key upgrades and replacements that will add elegance, beauty and a touch of your own personality. (STATEPOINT)

You can select from a wide array of decking color combinations that complement indoor flooring options, including popular greys and rich dark browns. Or, use contrasting colors to balance your home’s exterior color scheme. If you love the look of wood but don’t want to deal with all the upkeep, look for modern composites that mimic the appearance of traditional wood decking. Their realistic wood grains blend beautifully into the landscape, and complement many of today’s exterior siding options.

5. Are you designing a curved deck?

If you’re still looking for a way to set your yard apart, consider incorporating curves into your deck design. Curves can add architectural interest by following the contours of your landscape, encircling hot tubs and pools, or contrasting the straight lines of your house.

GARDEN On the garden path

Plant a pollinator garden and enjoy the many benefits

Whether planting a garden, enjoying the beauty of your landscape or sitting down to a delicious meal, you have bees, butterflies and other pollinators to thank. These essential members of our ecosystem are responsible for much of the food and beauty we enjoy each day. Unfortunately pesticides and habitat loss are threatening their existence. There is something you can do to help. Turn your garden, backyard or balcony into a pollinator’s habitat. Plant a variety of flowering plants that provide nectar and pollen throughout the season. Planting masses of natives, herbs and other pollinator favorites like sedum, zinnias, alyssum, cosmos, and columbine will attract these beauties to your landscape. Include a variety of day and night blooming flowers in a variety of colors and shapes to support the widest range of pollinators. But don’t let a lack of space dissuade you; even a window box of flowers can help. Keep your plants healthy and blooming with proper care. Match the plants to the growing conditions, provide needed water and fertilize with an organic nitrogen fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite. com) when needed. You’ll promote slow steady plant growth that is less susceptible to drought and pests. Plus the slow release low nitrogen won’t interfere with flowering, which is essential to the health and well being of our pollinators. Supplement pollinators’ diets with a bit of rotten fruit. And be sure to provide trees, shrubs, parsley, dill and other plants that caterpillars, grubs and the immature stage of other pollinators prefer to feed upon. Put away the pesticides and tolerate a few holes

in the leaves of their favorite plants. With a diversity of plants you can easily overlook the temporary leaf damage. Plus, this is a small price to pay for all the benefits they bring to the garden. Provide pollinators with shelter from predators and the BY Melinda Myers weather. Include CONTRIBUTOR a variety of trees, shrubs and perennials. Leave patches of open soil for ground nesting bees and some leaf litter to shelter some butterflies, bumblebees and other pollinating insects. Supplement natural shelter with commercial or homemade nesting boxes. You’ll find do-it-yourself plans on the internet from various educational sources. Puddles, fountains, birdbaths and even a damp sponge can provide needed water. Include water features with sloping sides or add a few stones to create easier access. Or sink a shallow container of sand in the ground. Keep it damp and add a pinch of sea salt for the butterflies and bees. Maximize your efforts by teaming up with your neighbors. Together you can create a larger more diverse habitat that provides pollinators with the resources they need to thrive. Your efforts will be rewarded with greater harvests, beautiful flowers and colorful birds and butterflies visiting your garden.

Spring tips to attract beautiful birds to your yard When hosting neighbors and friends for spring gatherings, your thoughts may dwell on accommodating guests. But how often do you consider your animal visitors? “During spring, flocks of birds migrate and are looking for places to refuel and rest,” says Spencer Schock, founder of WindowAlert, makers of bird-friendly products for homes. “A few small tweaks to your yard, is like placing out a welcome mat.” Unfortunately, migration is not without peril or hardship, but Schock says turning your home into a refuge for birds can be fun and add beauty to your yard. “By making a few simple modifications to your yard and home, you can assist birds on their long journey,” says Schock. He offers these tips to keep feathered travelers safe during their migratory journey. Protect flight Millions of birds die annually by striking glass, making windows a hazard

to birds in flight. Try applying special decals that reflect ultraviolet sunlight to your home’s windows, particularly those windows that are highly reflective of open sky. The decals won’t affect your view because they’re virtually invisible to humans, but will help keep birds safe. For example, those from WindowAlert have patterns that give the appearance of slightly frosted translucent glass, but glow like a stoplight for birds. The brand also makes a high-tech liquid called WindowAlert UV Liquid, which can be applied between decals. Such ultraviolet decals have been scientifically proven to keep birds safer. A 2015 American Bird Conservancy Study found that the more WindowAlert decals that were applied to a piece of glass covering the departure point of a flight tunnel, the more birds avoided it (a net protected all the birds in the study from actually getting hurt, no matter where they chose to fly).

yard can help beautify it and give birds the energy needed to continue their flight. Remember though, bird strikes are often a problem near bird feeders, as feeding birds are easily frightened and are apt to take wild, evasive flight – position feeders closer than three feet or farther than 30 feet from windows. If your feeder is close to the window, birds fly away from the house. Believe it or not, the safest type of feeder is the kind that attach to the window itself.

Hybrids, heirlooms and GMOs explained If the terms “hybrid,” “heirloom” and “GMO” have you stumped, you’re not alone. When it comes to buying seeds and plants, there’s a lot of confusion, even among seasoned gardeners. Here are a few facts that may help.

modern era of tomato breeding. “Hybrids grow well coast to coast with stable and reliable traits across a multitude of growing environments. The dependability of flavor and garden performance is what makes them garden staples throughout the good – and the bad – growing seasons,” said Chelsey Fields, a horticulturist at Burpee. Heirlooms Unlike hybrid seeds that result from selective breeding, heirlooms are openpollinated varieties prized for having characteristics that haven’t changed over 50

Hybrids First things first: Hybrids are not the same thing as genetically modified organisms. Thanks to pollinators such as bees and butterflies moving pollen from plant to plant, hybrids occur naturally in nature. A hybrid is created when two different plant varieties of the same species are cross-pollinated. In the same way that dog breeders can cross a Labrador retriever and a poodle to create a soft, fluffy Labradoodle, gardeners can select parent plants that display particular traits to produce offspring that offer improved yield, size, hardiness, color, shape and taste. The process of selective breeding was pioneered by Gregor Mendel in the 19th century. When it was first used by horticulturists in the 20th century, it resulted in hybrid corn that produced higher yields. Since that point, breeders, researchers and inventive gardeners have been using the process of hybridization to produce fruits, vegetables and flowers with highly selective features. Seed producers such as W. Atlee Burpee & Co. used selective breeding to create iconic vegetables such as the “Big Boy” tomato, a hybrid that displayed such vigor and disease resistance that it shaped the

These garage doors successfully integrate colors and shapes that complement the home’s unique design features.

Expert tips Today’s garage doors come in so many different and attractive designs that the biggest challenge for homeowners is to find the right door that looks best with their home’s unique features. While it’s great to have options, sometimes too many options can be overwhelming. And a garage door purchase is an important one. In fact, an upscale garage door replacement ranked first out of 11 popular upscale projects in delivering the best value for the buck, according to the new 2016 Cost vs. Value Report. One reason for a garage door’s top value is its curb appeal. Since most garage doors face the front of the home, they have enormous impact on the home’s exterior appeal and its perceived value. This greatly increases the importance of choosing the right garage door design for your home. Here are a few tips from Kelly Roberson, a writer and project manager who has written about home design for a variety of publications including Better Homes and Gardens, Before & After, Kitchen Makeovers and many more. “The key to finding the right door design is found on the façade of your

April 2016

home,” she says. “Pick up on your home’s design elements and use them in your garage doors to create a really impactful sense of design cohesiveness.”

Color matching Roberson recommends paying attention to two key design elements in your home’s exterior: colors and shapes. Start with the colors of your home. Since garage doors are now available in hundreds of colors, you are likely to find a great door color that matches your home. “Color can feel overwhelming, particularly when you think about making a good curb appeal impression,” says Roberson. “An easy trick is to turn to the accent colors already on your home’s façade. Pick one and use it in your garage doors for overall balance and beauty.” Your home’s accent colors are often found on your shutters, your front door, or the trim on your home or window. If your home includes a multi-colored brick, look for a dominant or attractive color inside the brick. The color of the roof can also be a strong design element for the front view

for selecting the best garage door design for your home

of the home. It’s often a neutral color that presents a good choice for classic garage door colors. Note that you might be searching for two colors, not just one. Many new carriage house garage doors come in two tones that provide additional color-matching opportunities. “Most homes use three colors – a dominant color and two sub-colors that are used to a lesser degree,” says Roberson. “For your garage doors, try flopping that color scheme so that one of the sub-colors becomes the door’s dominant hue.” Shape matching After considering the right color, look at the shapes on your home, particularly those of your windows and the smaller windowpanes inside the windows. Garage doors typically contain two dominant shapes: one on the panels themselves and one in the windows. The challenge is to match the shapes on the home with the shapes on the door. “In the same way that accent colors provide color guidance, accent shapes – small windows, peaks on roofs – can give

you inspiration for shapes to repeat in your garage door,” says Roberson. Consider any arch shapes on your home, such as arched windows or arched entryways. Several garage door window designs include arched options that can closely match the arch shapes on your home. Some home exteriors contain dominant angles such as 45-degree angles from dormers or rakes. Since many garage door designs now include crossbucks, you might find success with a garage door that features crossbucks at the same angle. When browsing for door designs, try www.garagewownow.com. It’s a noncommercial site that contains photos of dozens of garage door designs from many manufacturers, along with a Dealer Locator to help you find a professional door dealer near you. “The key to choosing beautiful garage doors is to let your home be your guide. Build on the features you love the best, and choose a new garage door that integrates seamlessly,” says Roberson. “When you find the right match, you’ll smile with satisfaction every time you come home.”

6 kitchen and bath upgrades that are ‘the whole package’

Let’s face it – once you get past high school, the people who go farthest in life are the ones who are the “whole package,” those who balance style, good looks and brains. The same can be said of kitchen and bath upgrades. The ones that will stand the test of time – the ones you’ll love as much in five years as you do the day they’re installed – are the improvements that blend style and intelligence. Sure you might fall in love with that $5,000 built-in coffee maker, but are you going to adore it as much when you’re still paying for it five years from now? And when you sell your home one day, will buyers agree with you that it was worth giving up an entire walk-in closet to get five more square feet in the master bathroom? Great bathrooms and kitchens really do sell homes, so it makes sense to invest in upgrades that are the whole package. They look great, are stylish, functional and enjoyable, and will give you a decent return on your investment when it comes time to sell. Here are six kitchen and bathroom improvements that really are the total package: 1. Granite countertops Countertops are both a major design feature and a vital necessity in both kitchens and baths. New, quality countertops improve the appearance and function of either room. Of course, granite is still a top choice for kitchen counters but it also goes well in the bathroom, giving vanities a high-end look. A USA Today study found more than

half of buyers said they would pay more for a home with granite countertops. 2. Skylights Whether in a kitchen or bathroom,

adding solar-powered, fresh-air skylights will brighten the space with abundant daylight and freshen the air with natural ventilation that exhausts heat, humidity and odors. In baths, they also provide privacy. Energy Star-qualified no leak skylights like those from VELUX America can be operated by a touchpad programmable remote control, as can solar powered blinds in an array of designer colors and patterns, and are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit for the skylights, blinds and the cost of installation. Sun Tunnel tubular skylights make it possible to add natural light even in firstfloor kitchens or bathrooms where there is no direct roof access. To learn more, and to locate local dealers and certified installers, visit www.whyskylights.com. 3. Quality lighting Lighting is both a practical and design consideration for kitchens and bathrooms. In addition to natural light sources, such as skylights and windows, it’s a good investment to install upgraded light fixtures. You should have multiple layers of light, including overhead for both rooms, task lighting or under-the-cabinet lighting in kitchens, and vanity lighting in the bathroom. Your design options are vast, and upgrading your lighting can be both a design statement and an improvement that enhances livability.

4. Eco-friendly fixtures and appliances Energy Star-qualified solar powered fresh air skylights brighten your kitchen Of course you know new appliances and dining area while silently exhausting cooking odors. Energy efficient solar and fixtures can make kitchens and baths blinds allow you to adjust the light during the day and control heat gain or loss look more appealing to buyers, and more enjoyable for you while you live in your as well. FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

home. But their value will be even greater if you choose options that can also help reduce your water, sewer and utility bills. From low-flow showerheads and ultra-highefficiency toilets, to Energy Star-qualified dishwashers and refrigerators, eco-friendly fixtures and appliances are great design choices that will put money back in your pocket for years to come. 5. Tile Tile is a big win for both kitchens and baths. Replacing worn or dated tile in showers or bathroom floors improves the look and function of the room. In kitchens, adding a tile backsplash is an affordable way to make a design statement while protecting walls from cooking spatters. Tile can also serve as a countertop material in kitchens and baths, where design flexibility and durability are essential. 6. Organization and storage solutions From dishes, pots, pans and foodstuff in the kitchen, to towels and personal care items in the bathroom, you probably have a lot of stuff that needs to be stored in both rooms. So will future buyers! Adding cabinet and drawer organizers, as well as extra storage solutions, can make it easier for you to use both rooms. Plus, it will help reduce clutter, giving your kitchen and bath a more open, clean look. You don’t need a huge budget to make kitchen and bathroom upgrades that really are the whole package. Even a minor renovation in either room can have a big impact on your home’s livability, beauty and resale value.

A new remodeling trend IS ADDING RESALE VALUE TO HOMES

Whether you’re looking to sell your house or just want to make a smart update that’s worth your time and money, consider a design trend that is both attractive and proven to add value to your home – manufactured stone. “Manufactured stone is exploding in popularity, in both exteriors and interiors,” says Phil Wengerd, vice president of Market Strategies for ProVia, a leading manufacturer of home building products. The numbers agree. Manufactured stone veneer projects offer a 92.9 percent cost recovery, according to Remodeling Magazine’s Cost vs. Value Report, a detailed comparison of the average cost of remodeling projects with the value those projects retain at resale in 100 US markets. If you’re looking to make a home upgrade using manufactured stone, Wengerd says to consider the following trends:

The material features the look of smaller stones, providing an elegant natural look that’s versatile in both exterior and interior applications.

Exotic colors Color blends continue to feature earth shades, however, more reds, purples and burgundies are being mixed in to complement colors in carpet, walls or window treatments. To respond to the demand, brands like ProVia’s manufactured stone are adding new stone color options. FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

Versatile project ideas As technology has made manufactured stone more accessible to the masses, today it’s showing up on more than just a home’s exterior. In interior applications, stone adds a dramatic frame for kitchen stoves and islands, and is used around bathtubs to create a spa-like retreat. It’s also a popular choice for masonry surface application in finished basements or for stone fireplaces. For style and color inspiration, as well as free resources, visit provia.com/stone. The purpose of the Milwaukee NARI Foundation Scholarship is to assist students who are southeastern Wisconsin residents and plan to attend a Wisconsin institution, pursuing higher education for a career in the remodeling industry – including associated mechanical, technical, and creative sectors. The students must reside Dodge, Jefferson, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Sheboygan, Walworth, Washington or Waukesha counties. “A primary goal of the Milwaukee NARI Foundation is the expansion of the pipeline of proficient and skilled employees to secure a career in the home improvement and remodeling industry,” said Tom Callen, Milwaukee NARI Foundation president. “An

objective of the scholarship program is to find individuals that will complete a curriculum that leads them to enjoy many years of fulfilling work within the industry.” Completed applications, which can be accessed at www. MilwaukeeNARIFoundation.org, along with an essay, letters of recommendations, and college or post secondary acceptance letter, are due to the Milwaukee NARI Foundation, P.O. Box 26788, Wauwatosa, WI 53226, by June 1. Recipient(s) will be notified by July 1. Call (414) 771-4071 for additional information. The goal of the Milwaukee NARI Foundation is to promote public awareness of the home remodeling and improvement industry through educational programs and community activities and raise funds to support scholarships and grants to help encourage and train young people and displaced workers interested in the professional remodeling industry. To carry out its purpose, the Foundation expends funds for the refinement and/or expansion of existing Milwaukee NARI education programs, supports scholarships to assist professional training of individuals entering the home improvement and remodeling field, and embarks on activities judged necessary to insure an ample supply of professionally trained individuals. Through various special events, including the annual Home Improvement Show raffle, rummage sale, golf outing, and holiday party, plus member contributions, the foundation has provided more than $180,000 in scholarships, tools, and equipment for use by students and schools in southeastern Wisconsin. The foundation has endowments at both Milwaukee Area Technical College and Waukesha County Technical College. For more information, visit www. MilwaukeeNARIFoundation.org.

Save money year round with these lighting tips Making a few simple DIY changes to your home can help you decrease monthly costs and reduce the need for upkeep. Check out these five tips that can help you increase energy efficiency and save on home expenses year-round. Seal windows and doorways Your windows and doorways should be barriers to hot, humid heat in summer and chilly temperatures in winter. Sealing windows and doorways will help keep cold air in and hot air out, lowering energy bills. Make sure to use the appropriate binding component: caulk for more stationary applications and weather strips for movable parts. Install shades When temperatures rise, energy bills needn’t follow. You can stabilize temperatures in your house by raising and lowering your shades, so the sun keeps its heat to itself in warmer months and provides heating gratis when it’s cold out. Pay special attention to south- and east-facing windows, as they tend to get the majority of sunlight. Swap to LEDs Swap out traditional incandescent light bulbs with LEDs. This simple update will save on your electric bill and is better for the environment. For example, the inexpensive SYLVANIA 10-Year LED portfolio offers high-quality lighting for all around your home, inside and out. Compared to similar LED products, these can save you around 50 to 70 percent and they last up to 10 years, so you won’t have to replace them frequently as with old-fashioned bulbs. You can find the portfolio at major retailers nationwide and online. Unplug when not in use Some household appliances and electronics use energy even when they’re turned off or in standby mode. According to Energy.gov, unplugging unused electronics can save you as much as 10 percent on your electricity bill. Turn off the lights Create a personal habit of turning lights off when you leave a room. This contributes to savings in energy and costs over time. Lightify smart connected lighting from Osram Sylvania can be turned off wherever you are, via your mobile device, if you forget to do it at home. Pet owners need not forgo a clean and great-smelling home. There are many smart ways to limit stains, prevent accidents and make clean up easier when incidents occur.

How to keep floors in

tip-top shape

s t e p h t i w

Whether you share your home with dogs, cats, birds, turtles or anything in between, you are probably aware of the challenges of protecting and cleaning your floors. To make this chore as easy for you as it is for your non-pet parent peers, consider the following tips:

Pets in boots Outfitting pets with boots before going outside will protect their paws from pollutants, hot and cold surfaces, and potentially sharp items on the ground. It will also keep their feet and your floors cleaner. There are many brands and styles available, so shop around for a design that your pets will enjoy wearing. Post-walk clean up After walks or other trips outdoors, check your pet’s fur and feet. Keep a cloth by the door for a quick clean up before animals settle in and get cozy on carpets. This will make maintaining floors easier as you go.

FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

Seeing the light about saving energy at home can help you have more comfort at less cost.

Prevent accidents Prevent pooch accidents by getting your dog on a regular walk schedule. The knowledge that the next trip outdoors is on the horizon will make pets less likely to use the living room carpet as a toilet. If need be, you may want to consider employing a day-time dog walker to make trips outdoors a more regular occurrence. If you have litter box issues, keep the box clean to encourage dedicated use.

Regular visits to the veterinarian can help ensure there are no health issues at play.

Choose flooring wisely Until now, even the best prevention of stains and accidents has offered no guarantees. And shedding of fur, feathers and dander is hard to avoid. However, innovations in flooring are making it easier on those who love their pets but are not interested in forfeiting a clean, stain-free and odor-free home. Give yourself an advantage with a pet proof carpet, such as Mohawk’s SmartStrand Forever Clean carpet, which is designed to resist the challenges pets present. Compared to nylon carpet, which absorbs up to five percent of its weight in liquid, this alternative has zero percent moisture absorption to resist stains and eliminate any residue that can be left in the fiber, which can lead to a musty, dingy odor. (These features will also benefit those with kids.) It also offers a permanent spill and soil shield that makes cleanup of hair, soil and dander three times easier than with conventional carpeting. Protect floors financially Consider a pet-specific warranty for carpeting to better protect your investment. For example, Mohawk offers an All Pet Protection and Warranty on its SmartStrand Forever Clean carpeting, which is the only warranty of its kind that covers all pets and all accidents. SPRING HOME IMPROVEMENT

Purchasing specialized tools like the Ironton Rotary Hammer Drill allows you to do a specific task – like drilling through concrete – while avoiding the cost of hiring a contractor.

for breaking the DIY barrier

Whether inspired by countless cable shows or the desire to have the perfect kitchen, more Americans are doing their own home improvement projects. Laying hardwood floors, installing plumbing and replacing windows has become another DIY task like changing your oil. Consider these following tips in determining how to tackle your next job. Assess the job Define what you want to accomplish. Determine your timetable, budget and the project scale and scope. Match your tools from there. Research the project and tools Many people turn to professionals for jobs they could do themselves because they don’t know what tools they need. To avoid the high cost of hiring a professional, research tool reviews, equipment magazines and even retailer websites like Northern Tool + Equipment to help guide you with your tool selection.

One’s skill level also plays a factor when it comes time to choose a tool. A veteran DIYer might not need some tools someone performing a project for the first time might. Consider ROI Look in depth at the tool you need to buy and at the different brands on the market that fit for your budget. Private label brands often offer value. And instead of bouncing from one hardware store to the next, utilize product comparison tools online to compare and contrast product life, value, capabilities and quality to determine the best ROI. While DIY projects often save money, they also provide an enhanced pride in ownership associated with seeing your handiwork. With the right tools, you can tackle any home improvement project. Ultimately it’s the person who makes the tool, not vice versa. So grab your tool belt, slide on your work gloves and get it done.

Prepare your air conditioner for summer

Although the dog days of summer are months away, it’s never too soon to begin preparing for them. This includes taking a few simple steps to make sure your air-conditioning system is ready to properly cool your home. Begin by clearing the area around your outdoor compressor, removing leaves, twigs and other debris that may have accumulated over the winter. The space around and above the unit should be clear and uncluttered. Next, check the system’s filters, typically located along the return duct. Dirty filters can block airflow and reduce system efficiency, so it’s important to clean or replace them regularly, preferably every month when the system is operating. Holes or separated joints in the ductwork can also impact airflow and efficiency, so turn your system on and make sure air is flowing properly through the vents. If you suspect a leak in the ductwork, hire a professional to make the necessary repairs. Use this time to caulk and weather-strip around doors and windows. This often-overlooked step will help keep cool air inside your home during warm summer months and warm air outside. It’s also a good idea to add insulation around airconditioning ducts when they are located in unconditioned spaces, such as attics, crawl spaces and garages. Finally, contact a certified technician to do a preseason check of your system. An annual inspection should include the following: • Clean indoor and outdoor coils; • Check your system’s refrigerant charge and adjust it, if necessary, to meet manufacturer specifications; • Clean and adjust blower components to provide proper system airflow; • Lubricate all moving parts; • Inspect the condensate drain for clogs that can cause water damage, affect indoor humidity levels, and breed bacteria and mold; • Check thermostat settings and system controls to ensure proper and safe operation; • Tighten all electrical connections; and • Measure voltage and current on motors. Taking these steps to prepare your air conditioner for summer will also help to extend the life of your system and save you money by detecting small issues before they become major problems. Your home is your castle and you should feel safe and comfortable whenever you’re there so follow the tips above to improve the air quality in your home. And once you do, take a deep breath, you’ve earned it.

5to improve ways the air quality in your home

Before you take that next breath, do you know what’s in the air in your home? Sure there’s oxygen and carbon dioxide – that much you know – but it’s the things you don’t know about that should concern you. A quick test of your indoor air quality can unearth the presence of several, unwanted contaminants in your air, including volatile organic compounds (VOCs) like formaldehyde, allergens like dust mites, as well as mold and other particulates. This is the material you’re unknowingly breathing in every day. You can dramatically improve the air quality in your home by implementing these five tips: Keep the floors clean Many of the particulates and allergens found in your home’s air are kicked up from the floor as people or pets move about. Diligently cleaning the floors is a good way to minimize this concern. So whether your tool of choice is a vacuum, a mop or a broom, focus on the floors and your family will benefit.

FILE PHOTO Spring Home Improvement

It can be a cool idea to prepare your air-conditioning system before the hot weather sets in.

Build a wall against formaldehyde If you’re like most people, you spend about 90 percent of your time indoors and that choice exposes you to a greater risk of inhaling formaldehyde and getting sick. Most people associate formaldehyde with laboratories and mortuaries but there are actually many sources of the chemical in the average home including glue, particle board, plywood, paper product coatings and other household chemicals. Fortunately, you don’t have to suffer this drop in air quality, there are solutions to clean your air and remove formaldehyde. AirRenew with M2Tech uses an innovative patent pending technology to actively

clean your home’s air. This advanced drywall captures and transforms formaldehyde into inert compounds, and never re-emits them into the air, preserving your air quality. “Not only is it mold-resistant, it actually absorbs volatile organic compounds for up to 75 years,” contractor and home improvement expert Mike Holmes said. “This isn’t just about doing the basement; this should be the whole house.” Service the furnace Is your home’s furnace running optimally? If it’s not, it could be jeopardizing the quality of your air. Your furnace should be serviced annually by a trained technician to make sure it’s running properly. After that, it’s up to you to make sure the furnace filter is replaced every month. Set the first day of the month as your day to change your filter and you’ll never forget. Circulate fresh air This may not be doable on the coldest days of winter but during the other three seasons, try to have the windows open as much as possible. Even an hour or two of fresh air breezing through your home can dramatically improve your indoor air quality. Don’t smoke Among its many other negatives, nicotine use is the leading cause of lung cancer. If you’re a smoker, the deterioration of your home’s air quality is just one more reason to quit. Start your quit plan today and you’ll be breathing easier indoors and out. To learn more, visit CertainTeed.com/ (BPT) CleanTheAir.

to 100 years. They’re often specific to a particular area and therefore not widely adaptable. Also, unlike hybrids, their flowers and fruits tend to be less vigorous, making them more susceptible to diseases and adverse conditions. Many heirloom seeds were once available commercially and have been saved from extinction by dedicated gardeners who save fresh seeds every year. Genetically modified organisms GMOs are quite different from both hybrids and heirlooms. GMO seeds are the result of genetic engineering, the process Serving You For Over 50 Years

of altering a plant’s DNA in a laboratory setting. This often includes introducing genes from a different species to increase a plant’s resistance to disease or spoilage. It’s important to know GMOs are found only in commercially grown farm produce. Seeds or plants that might contain GMOs are not available to home gardeners in the United States. All of Burpee’s hybrid and heirloom seeds are non-GMO. The company has supplied American home gardeners with the highest-quality seeds since 1876.
