The answer to overcoming color cowardice in home decorating:
more natural light Have you ever picked a paint color you loved in the store, only to hate it when it’s on the walls at home? Or purchased throw pillows that you thought would be delightful on your neutral-hued couch, only to decide they look positively garish there? In both cases, you loved the colors when you first saw them, so what happened between the store and home? The problem is simple – the light changed. Every color looks different depending on the type of light by which you view it. You probably first viewed that ultimately disappointing paint color and throw pillows under fluorescent light bulbs in the store. When you got home, your light bulbs are all old-fashioned incandescent

bulbs or (if you’re eco-minded) compact fluorescent lights (CFLs). This effect is one reason why so many people hesitate to decorate with rich, dark or vibrant colors in their home, opting instead to stick with neutrals. While neutral tones can be a wonderful background that allows the beauty of a home’s architectural bones to shine through, decorating with neutrals atop neutrals can leave a room looking bland and lifeless. Your neutral background still needs pops of color, and wouldn’t you secretly love to have a dark plum wall or two in your dining room or hot pink accents in the family room? How can you make the most of color
in your home while minimizing the risk of disappointment? The solution is as simple as the problem – decorate your home with natural light. Daylight contains all the colors in the visible spectrum, so hues of every depth and saturation always look their best in natural light. That’s because the essence of that color is already present in natural light, whereas certain colors dominate different types of artificial light. For example, LEDs are highly energy efficient, but blue is the dominant shade in most LEDs. Halogens emit more light in red wavelengths, while fluorescent bulbs are heavier with green light.

How hot technologies can
improve your kitchen Modern technology is improving every facet of our lives and the kitchen is no exception. By carefully outfitting your kitchen, your appliances can be safer, more efficient and give you versatility and precision as a home chef. One technology, which has been popular in Europe for years, but is still relatively new to the U.S., is induction cooking, which uses electromagnetic energy to heat foods quickly and precisely. Like a gas burner, an induction cooktop or rangetop surface can handle the rapid shifts in heat settings required in a busy kitchen. And because the burner does not heat unless cookware is detected, ventilation can operate more efficiently. Other efficiencies in induction cooking are exemplified in such appliances as the new 36-inch Induction 5-Zone Cooktop from Verona, which includes a fast boil setting for rapid cooking as well as a low power setting for delicate meals. A pan detection system saves energy by sensing the size and shape of cookware and intelligently heating only the needed cooking area. Features like a residual heat indicator and an automatic shut-off in case of spillage make cooking with this induction cooktop safer, too. The brand also makes a 30inch induction cooktop and 30-inch induction range. More information can be found at VeronaAppliances.com. “Because induction cooking offers the most direct heat transfer of any cooking surface and features unprecedented safety benefits, it’s become the modern standard for kitchens today,” says Melissa Haber, director of sales and marketing for EuroChef USA. Consumers looking to upgrade their kitchens in the future will enjoy even more choices, as new induction ranges are introduced, such as 36-inch and 40-inch ILVE ranges, which offer a wealth of features like a rotisserie, warming drawer, power boost burners and a multifunction convection oven. To learn more about the brand and its current 30-inch induction range visit ilveappliances.com.
If you are still cooking with old school appliances in your kitchen, you may be working harder than you need to be. When making an upgrade, consider the latest cooking technologies.

•NATURAL LIGHT – from page 3 Only natural light perfectly blends all colors in a pleasing balance. Chances are good, if you just reposition those couch pillows slightly to capture the light from the living room skylight you’ll love the color again. Bringing more color-friendly natural light into your home can be as basic or as grand as you wish. Simply opening blinds and drapes can alter how colors look in a room. Or, if you want to maximize natural light with a tactic that’s also a stunning design element, try installing skylights. Skylights like those from Velux America can admit ample natural light into your home, enhancing not only the colors of your home decor, but your mood as well. Place a remote-controlled, solarpowered fresh-air skylight in a kitchen or bath and you may feel more comfortable taking a bold color risk, plus you can reap the benefits of passive ventilation. The skylights carry a no-leak warranty and close automatically in case of rain. Add solar-powered blinds, and it’s easy to give a room a whole new look simply by closing or opening the blinds. What’s
more, light blocking or light filtering blinds – available in a variety of designer colors and patterns – further enhance the Energy Star-qualified skylights’ energy efficiency. Dorian Lytle, the architect for the 2014 Coastal Living Magazine Show House in Coronado, California, specified solar-powered fresh-air skylights for that home. “One of the big reasons was for natural light,” he says. “I like the way skylights will bring natural light in from above. Ventilation was another reason. If you have the opportunity to strategically place skylights in your home, they will make a world of difference. Skylights are a terrific and easy way to bring natural light and ventilation into a home.” Installing the latest solar-powered fresh-air skylights with solar blinds, both of which are operated by programmable remote control, can qualify you for a 30 percent federal tax credit on the products as well as installation costs – and you can spend the savings on bold, intoxicating color executed with confidence. Award-winning interior designer reveals 5 ways to a must-have media room
It’s hard to believe that at one time, Americans watched television by huddling around a small box with poor picture quality and sound. Even nicer televisions were tucked in the corner of living rooms where noise from the kitchen, kids running around the house and other distractions constantly interfered. How we watch television and movies at home has greatly changed in the past decade. Today’s consumer-grade audiovisual technology is a full-body, multi-sensory experience. The sound, visuals and comfortable seating achieved in home theaters rival, and sometimes exceed, that of movie theaters. Media rooms are no longer the luxury of the wealthy. They have become a standard in many middle class households throughout the country, and are on the top of the list for many people remodeling their homes. Today, the media room has become a multipurpose space where families can watch a movie together, kids can play their video games or friends can
congregate to watch the big game. Whatever your interest, a newly renovated media room can provide the right space for your gathering. But to achieve the ultimate experience, there’s more than just the latest digital gadgets and comfy seating to consider. To design the proper media room, TV personality and award-winning interior designer Anitra Mecadon offers the following tips: START AT THE STUDS You’ll probably spend the majority of your time deciding what kind of screen and speaker components to install, but no matter how cutting edge your audiovisual equipment is, you have to properly house it in order to realize its full potential. For this, your media room needs the right walls. Just like Ultra High Definition technology represents how far televisions have come, PURPLE SoundBreak XP drywall made by National Gypsum represents how far drywall technology has advanced. This revolutionary drywall reduces the noise heard between rooms.
This means you won’t be disturbed by the dishwasher or washing machine while watching your favorite movies. And likewise, people in other rooms won’t hear those powerful speakers. Hire an expert. Even if you’re savvy with electronics and have set up speakers and receivers in the past, play it safe and hire an expert to properly install all the components in your media room. You might need more powerful circuits installed, or an expert’s touch to perfectly balance and sync the sound between your television, speaker and receiver. Plus, they’ll know how to conceal wires and give your room that clean look. PROTECT YOUR INVESTMENT Many media rooms are in a basement where mold and moisture are a constant threat. The space needs to remain dry to provide a healthy environment. To keep your family and valuable electronics safe, it’s a wise idea to put up drywall that can actively guard against these dangers.
PURPLE XP drywall made by National Gypsum is mold and moisture resistant, providing added protection for your investment. BUY A TELEVISION Because you want more of a movie theater feel, you may be tempted to buy a projector and a screen. But most people who do this end up replacing it with a television. Why? A high resolution smart TV ultimately provides more clarity, better picture and 3D. Make sure you have the right lighting. From color-changing LED lightbulbs to dimmers on sound bars, there is no end to how creative you can get with the lighting in your media room. No matter what you do, be sure you can control the light in order to accommodate a variety of situations: dark for the dramatic scenes and just enough light for when the pizza arrives. To learn more, visit www. askforpurple.com.
(BPT)
To really achieve the full effect that a modern media room can offer, tear down the walls and start at the studs. The right drywall is as important as the right speaker.

Three DIY ways to improve your home Wi-Fi
INTERIOR
You don’t need an expert to tell you – America is hooked on the internet. Just try to think of the last day you didn’t use the web in some way. But you probably don’t think much about the main way the internet is delivered – through Wi-Fi. It powers your computer at work – as well as the Facebook feed you’re discreetly checking under your desk. At home, it’s the new electricity. Netflix, Hulu, and Pandora rely on it. It powers activities on your smartphone, unless you want to rack up a huge data bill from your carrier. Wi-Fi runs the kids’ Xbox and maybe even your thermostat and security camera – these days, almost every device in the home is thirsty for Wi-Fi. When you do think about Wi-Fi, it’s usually because it’s not working – and driving you nuts. Before investing in a more expensive internet package or living with buffering videos and router resets, here are three do–it–yourself ways to improve your home Wi-Fi:
MOVE YOUR ROUTER
If you have rooms that don’t have access to the internet – dead zones – first try moving your router to a more central location in the home. Because routers have a limited range, it’s important that your router is in a central area. If you can’t move the router to a different location, try elevating it on a table or shelf to spread the signal more efficiently. Large metal appliances, like refrigerators, and electronics that emit radio waves, like microwaves, can interfere with your network’s signal. Keeping the router out of places like the kitchen can help bolster the range and speed of your Wi-Fi.
UPGRADE TO A MESH NETWORK
Most households rely on a single router. But with the steep increase in home internet usage, one Wi-Fi router may not be adequate to support all the devices connected to it. A San Francisco company, eero, was the first to bring a mesh Wi-Fi system into the home. eero – which is about as simple as anything gets in the tech world – works by swapping out your current router, plugging a single eero into your modem, then placing additional eeros throughout the house. The devices work together to create a wireless mesh network that delivers fast, reliable Wi-Fi to every room. Their mesh technology ensures people are getting the same internet speeds they’re paying for throughout the entire home, instead of just near wherever their cable pipe comes in. eero is quick to set up and makes it easy for people to manage their networks through a smartphone app. The app allows you to monitor your internet network from afar and invite guests to join the network via a text message. Parents can even assign schedules for when devices can access Wi-Fi, making it easy to limit their kids’ internet usage.
UPDATE YOUR MODEM
An often overlooked device that may be throttling your Wi-Fi signal is the cable modem, the device that translates the data coming in through your cable pipe into a digital language your router can understand. Households should update their modems every three to five years. If yours is outdated, it could be impacting the quality of your signal and speed. Many people rent their modem from their internet service provider for $5 to $10 a month. Purchasing a new, updated modem usually costs $50 to $100, but you’ll save money on a rental fee while seeing major improvements to your Wi-Fi. (BPT)

For those looking to renovate, a fireplace presents an attractive choice – whether a sale is in the cards or you simply want to enhance appeal and comfort.
Renovating?
Why to consider a fireplace When considering home renovations, it’s important to be choosy, as some projects can end up costing you a pretty penny with little return on investment. Some fast facts can provide answers to this age-old consideration. Here are three compelling reasons to think fireplace. • A gas fireplace will add $2,950 to $5,900 to a home’s value, according to the “Marshall & Swift Residential Cost Handbook.” • New homebuyers rank fireplaces as the number one most desired decorative appearance product in a new home, according to the National Association of Home Builders.
• Today, homeowners have an opportunity to differentiate their homes with a fireplace in different ways. Both traditional and modern fireplaces are now offered with innovative technologies that push the boundaries of where fire can go and how it can look. Consider brands that designers, architects, builders, and remodelers trust, such as Heat & Glo, which leads the industry in design and innovative technology. More information about how a fireplace can improve home value and differentiate spaces is available at www. heatnglo.com.
Now that your kids have launched lives of their own, you may be considering how to maximize the extra space they left behind. Making renovations can be a fun way to turn their now-empty rooms into a useful and/or relaxing space for your own enjoyment. And your timing could be spot on – a recent survey found half of empty nesters of preretirement age are opting to stay in their family homes instead of downsizing. “Retirement isn’t all about being practical,” notes Ken Dychtwald of California-based consulting firm Age Wage. “More and more people are turning their empty nests into nurturing nests.”
Even better, with today’s easy-to-use construction tools, repurposing rooms can be stress-free and efficient. If you haven’t engaged in DIY projects lately, it’s worthwhile to check out some of the newest market innovations in saws, cordless drills, portable nailers and belt sanders. One of the most consumer-friendly is the RotoSaw+ with Dust Vault attachment from RotoZip that can effectively custom-cut a variety of materials (including drywall) while reducing the dust and debris that is sure to be produced by any great remodel project by 90 percent.

Separating fact from fiction A closer look at American hardwoods
As home improvement projects take center stage, the search is on for products that will enhance, rather than jeopardize the health and well-being of our families and loved ones. Products made from American hardwoods have been the natural choice for healthy home and work environments for generations. Today is no different. With so many options available in the current marketplace, Linda Jovanovich of the American Hardwood Information Center, www.HardwoodInfo.com, suggests a little more research, in order to separate product fact from fiction. “Health-conscious and environmentally responsible consumers are challenged to recognize products and materials that are both aesthetically appealing and safe,” she says. “I encourage taking a closer look at U.S. products – especially flooring and cabinetry, furniture and moulding – made from American hardwoods. They’re uniquely beautiful, safe and a friend to the environment. And they have the
credentials to prove it.”
Treasured for generations, and forever fresh
Enhancing our surroundings with products made from American hardwoods is a wise choice and a sound investment. In the kitchen or the bath, over the fireplace or on the floor, the sheer beauty, durability and timeless appeal of the products make a lasting statement everywhere. So paint it; stain it; repair it; refinish it; walk on it; restore it; love it; refresh it. The possibilities are endless.
Made in the USA
There is much to consider before making a purchase in today’s marketplace. What’s the product’s origin? Is it made of natural materials or is it a synthetic product steeped with chemicals and potential carcinogens? What health and/ or environmental implications will its manufacturing process have? In the United States, quality standards
and manufacturing practices are regulated and monitored by U.S. agencies and associations. Consumers can confidently choose products made from all natural American hardwoods knowing that the hardwood has been responsibly harvested and that manufacturing quality control standards have been met.
A friend to the environment
Flash back to seventh grade biology for a memory refresher about photosynthesis and long-term carbon sequestration. • Growing trees remove carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, separate the carbon and oxygen atoms, then return the oxygen to the air; and • They use just the right amount of carbon to grow trunk, branches and leaves, and store or sequester the unused carbon for the life of the tree or the products made thereof. That means using all natural American hardwoods for products like flooring and cabinetry, furniture and moulding
contributes to the long-term sequestration of carbon.
Sustainability
For centuries, products made from American hardwoods have been providing lasting beauty, warmth and functional value to our homes and countless structures everywhere. Future generations can expect the same. The U.S. Forest Service reports that the volume of hardwoods in American forests today is 131 percent greater than it was in 1953 because more than twice as much hardwood grows each year as is harvested. That’s sustainability in a nutshell. We are not running out of trees – hardwoods are an abundant, renewing and sustainable resource. Step into the world of American Hardwoods, www.HardwoodInfo.com, and take a closer look at the myriad of products made from this natural and healthy, uniquely beautiful, responsibly harvested and more-abundant-than-ever resource.

In a courtroom, if a judge exclaimed, “You’re out of order!” you’d know to shut up, but when your home is out of order, there’s no one to shout at you but the stuff that’s been left out all over the place. When your house is out of order, it causes you to be out of order. Clutter has a voice and it won’t shut up until you deal with it.

What to look for when buying a garage door for your home The most important factor that garage door buyers consider is not the price. That was the surprising result of a 2016 national survey completed in February. According to that study, the buyers’ most important consideration is appearance/curb appeal, followed by price, durability, low maintenance, warranty, and five other factors. “This survey underscores the key role that garage doors play in the appearance of today’s homes,” says Todd Thomas, managing director of the International Door Association. “Since garage doors command such a large area of the front of the typical home, homeowners are increasingly recognizing the powerful impact of an attractive garage door.” Latest census statistics The large area occupied by garage doors is getting even larger. In June, the U.S. Census Bureau reported that 24 percent of new singlefamily houses completed in 2015 had a three-car (or more) garage, the highest percentage ever. The Midwest region leads the country with 42 percent of new homes having at least a threecar garage. The larger the area, the larger the aesthetic impact. “Can you imagine how much it would cost to renovate 150 square feet of the front of your home?” Thomas asks. “With a new upscale garage door, you can get the project done professionally for less than $3,000.” The top upscale project The new 2016 Cost vs. Value Report from Remodeling Magazine also echoes the costeffectiveness of a new garage door. For the first time in the report’s history, an upscale garage door replacement earned the top spot in the rankings of all upscale projects studied. The report said that the purchase of an upscale garage door recoups 90 percent of its cost at resale, far above the second place project, which was a siding replacement at 78 percent. The average cost recouped for all 30 projects in the study was 64 percent. “More people are migrating to the quality doors,” says Wayne Pawlowski at Garage Door Guy in Barnegat, New Jersey. “No longer is it ‘What’s the cheapest you got?’ They would rather spend a few extra dollars and get a better door.” New designs, more choices Fortunately for the consumer, garage door manufacturers are now producing hundreds of stunning designs in steel, wood, aluminum and fiber-composite material. When combined with new colors, windows, insulation and decorative hardware options, the potential designs are almost limitless. “We have so many more attractive designs today than we had 20 years ago,” says Randy Oliver of Hollywood-Crawford Door, a long-time garage door dealer in San Antonio. “An upgraded door that takes advantage of all these optional features is surprisingly affordable.” Best buyer’s resource The key is to learn more about a garage door’s features and the design possibilities. in a new roof Between strong winds, heavy rains, and threats like fire and natural disaster, simply having a roof over one’s head is not always enough. When choosing a strong roof designed to protect your home and its occupants, here are some things to consider:
FIRE PREVENTION Real wood shake roofs can be extremely combustible and serve as kindling for wildfires. If you live in an area with even a remote possibility of wildfires, consider investing in a roof that resists flame spread. While no roof will resist a “ground up” fire that engulfs the entire home, polymer roofing tiles that are installed with proper underlayments can help protect a home from wind-driven embers that can ignite the roof. IMPACT RESISTANCE Whether you live in an area prone to direct or indirect threats of tornadoes or hurricanes, or you simply
live in a region that experiences strong storms, take note – flying debris associated with severe weather can become dangerous in high winds. Damage from airborne tree branches and flying loose items can be devastating to a roof not equipped for impact. Having a synthetic roof that has achieved the highest ratings on impact resistance tests can help protect your property. “Even if your roof has stood up to strong weather conditions in the past, it’s important to make sure it’s still in shape before the next round of bad weather hits,” says Mark Hansen, vice president of sales and marketing for DaVinci Roofscapes, which makes high-performing polymer roofing products that have achieved the highest grades possible on multiple industry tests. Examine the roof yourself or have a professional roofer assess for damage you may not be able to see from the ground. They can make repairs or recommend a new roof replacement.
DURABILITY No matter where you live, it’s important that roof tiles can handle wear and tear. Ideally, roof tiles should resist curling, fading, cracking, mold, algae, fungus and insects. Roofing products that come with a strong warranty can offer you peace of mind.
OTHER CONSIDERATIONS Protecting your home and family should be your number one consideration. Luckily, durable synthetic roofing options abound that offer the authentic look of real wood or slate beauty, as well as environmental sustainability. For the benefits of an eco-friendly roof, it’s a good idea to seek out products that are completely recyclable and meet standards set by organizations like the Cool Roof Rating Council and the U.S. Green Building Council. Your home exterior – •GARAGE DOOR how to select color Curb appeal does not happen by accident. From siding to trim to your home’s entry door, these components should not be considered individually, but as parts of a whole – especially when it comes to color, say experts. “It all starts with the roof,” says Kate Smith, a color trend forecaster with Sensational Color. “Colors should flow down the home exterior cohesively.” Smith recommends that when the main color of your home exterior is neutral, to add pops of color on the entry door and trim. The color of your roof should guide these decisions, as the right accents will bring the look together and complement the roof’s beauty. Smith recommends color selection tips and free resources that can be found at DaVinciRoofscapes.com.

homeowners with the task, garage door manufacturers have joined together to create a free consumer website (www.garagewownow.com) that contains dozens of photos of the latest garage doors from many manufacturers. The GarageWowNow site includes design tips, photos of
many openers and accessories, and several before-and-after garage door images that demonstrate how a door upgrade improves the appearance of the home. A dealer finder on the site leads you to a nearby qualified door dealer who can handle the project quickly, properly, and safely.
“I tell my customers that price should be a factor, but not the only factor,” says Oliver. “When customers realize the overall value of a better-made and better-looking garage door, they buy the better door almost every time.”

Five ways to turn your
deck from drab to fab Inspiring makeover ideas to add new life to ho-hum decks Is your deck living up to its full potential? It’s not too late to enjoy your deck again, here are five ways you can turn it from drab to fab: Clean before you dream Many decks can be restored to fab with a simple, routine cleaning. However, if you have a wood deck that’s been around for years, your boards are likely showing their age and it might be time for a total surface update. With many different materials to choose from, high-quality products that last – like ChoiceDek composite decking – can be a great alternative to wood. Many of these composite decking options can be easily cleaned with just soap, hot water and a soft bristle brush. Make room for more Increasing the size of your deck can
enhance its function and style. Extending the surface area into multiple levels creates unique vantage points into the rest of the yard and differentiates your space from the rest. If your deck feels too traditional, try adding some curves to its edges to personalize the space and fit your needs. Beautify borders If you have recently finished a deck addition or are able to buy decking boards to match your current deck, you can add built-in seating and privacy structures to define the boards of your outdoor space and bring your personality into the design. Adding various plants to provide colors along the border of the deck can also bring an inviting feel to the space. Lounge in style Sometimes the best way to bring life

Fall care for a healthier, better looking lawn As summer fades into fall it is time to help lawns recover from summer stress and prepare for the winter ahead. Continue to mow your lawn as long as it continues to grow. Grow cool season grasses like bluegrass, fescue and ryegrass By Melinda 2-1/2 to 3-1/2 inches tall. Myers Warm season grasses like bermudagrass, carpetgrass, CONTRIBUTOR centipedegrass and zoysia should be grown at 1 to 2 inches tall while St. Augustine should a bit higher, 2 to 3 inches, for best results. Taller grass is better able to compete with weeds. And there is no need to cut it shorter for the health of your lawn. Mow often, removing no more than one third the total height. Leave these short clippings on the lawn. They will quickly break down, adding organic matter, moisture and nutrients to the soil. And as you mow you can take care of all those fall leaves at the same time. Shred the fall leaves and allow them to remain on the lawn. As long as you can see the leaf blades through the shredded leaves your lawn will be fine. And just like the clippings, they add nutrients and organic matter to the soil. Fertilize your lawn with a low nitrogen, slow release fertilizer like Milorganite (milorganite.com). University research has shown that fall fertilization is the most beneficial practice for home lawns. Less disease problems and slower weed growth means your lawns – not the weeds and pests – benefit from the nutrients. Fall fertilization also helps lawns recover from the stresses of summer because it encourages deep roots and denser growth that can better compete with weeds and tolerate disease and insects. Those in colder regions growing cool weather bluegrass, fescue and perennial ryegrass should fertilize around Labor Day and sometime between Halloween and Thanksgiving, but before the ground freezes. Homeowners in warmer climates growing warm season grasses like centipede, Bermuda and zoysia should fertilize around Labor Day. Apply a low nitrogen slow release fertilizer then and in early October if overseeding the lawn. Make sure the last fall application is at least one month prior to the average first killing frost. Fertilizing later can result in winter damage. Weeds often gain a foothold in the lawn during the stressful summer months. A healthy lawn is the best defense. Even with proper care weeds can bully their way into the lawn. Try digging, root and all, to remove small populations of weeds. Weeding can be a great tension reducer and physical workout. If this isn’t possible, consider spot treating weeds or problem areas with a broadleaf weedkiller. Those looking for more organic options may want to try one

of the more eco-friendly products with the active ingredient Fehedta or Hedta. Whether using traditional or environmentally-friendly products read and follow label directions carefully. All these products are plant killers and can cause damage to other plants if not applied properly. Fall, when the lawn is actively growing, is the best time to core aerate or dethatch northern lawns suffering from thatch build up or compacted soil. Thatch is a layer of partially decomposed dead grass plants that prevents water and nutrients from reaching the grass roots. Use a dethatching machine to remove thatch layers greater than one half an inch. Or core aerate the lawn to create openings in the thatch layer and help reduce soil compaction to encourage root growth and allow water and nutrients to infiltrate the soil. Overseeding your lawn in the fall helps increase thickness and improves the overall health and appearance of the lawn. For best results, overseed directly after aerating. Begin implementing some of these strategies and soon you’ll be on your way to a healthier, better looking lawn for the coming growing season.

LAWN & GARDEN As every good realtor will tell you, curb appeal and making a good first impression are fundamental in selling your house at the price you want. Therefore, having a well-kept lawn is key to your home’s value.
The science of lawn care made simple America has home renovation fever. At one time, a handful of home improvement shows were on late at night or during the day, but now entire networks are dedicated to showcasing remodels, flips, additions and new constructions. The result is that more homeowners are ready to tear out the old and install maple cabinets, granite counters or marble bathtubs. Many undertake these renovations with the belief that it will increase their home’s value. But the simple fact is that large-scale projects often cost more than the value they add, and rarely do homeowners recoup their expenses. A far easier, less expensive and effective strategy is to focus on your lawn. Even if you’re not selling right now, a healthy lawn is a long-term investment that contributes to the overall value of your neighborhood and location. Science, simplified Those immaculate greens you see on golf courses or large estates are so pristine

partially due to engineering and a scientific understanding of the soil and how grass grows. People go to college to specifically study the science of lawn care. The good news is to get similar results you don’t need men in lab coats to study your lawn. The basis of the best-kept lawns in the world is the same as in your neighborhood – a lawnmower.
mowers, ones that mulch and ones that collect. Mulching, which leaves behind a finely chopped layer of grass, is ideal for areas suffering from droughts. The grass clippings not only aid in water conservation, but also fertilize the soil, leading to a greener, healthier lawn. These lawn mowers have a high cutting deck, which increases the airflow that helps to Types of lawn evenly distribute the clippings. The do-all solution There is a reason golf courses have a fleet of lawnmowers, as they require a special machine for each job, for many variants and terrain. Thankfully, consumers don’t need a garage full of lawn mowers. The Husqvarna LC221A lawn mower offers an all-in-one advantage that gives you the choice to mulch or to bag clippings. This allows people to adapt to environmental conditions, such as mowing a small yard or a farmyard, in a drought or after a rainfall. It also provides multiple options for leaf removal, which extends its value past the end of the usual mowing season. In essence, they’ll be able to maintain a lawn they’ll be proud of and, more importantly, adds value to their home.

Armed with the facts, homeowners should feel confident that switching to LED light bulbs will allow them to enjoy hassle-free lighting, see savings in their energy bill and create the right ambiance in the home.

See the light Get the real facts about LED bulbs
Light-emitting diode light bulbs have transformed home lighting since coming on the market. Despite proven benefits that far outweigh older lighting options, like incandescent and compact fluorescent light bulbs, many people remain hesitant to make the switch. It’s time to finally dispel some common LED myths and get the real facts about these light bulbs so you can choose the best lighting for your home. Myth: LED light bulbs aren’t worth the cost. Fact: LED light bulbs are now only a few dollars more than ordinary light bulbs; significant research and development from manufacturers like Philips Lighting has made LED light bulbs more affordable. Although the initial cost of an LED may be slightly higher than an incandescent light bulb, making the switch to LED lighting provides significant long-term savings. For
example, the Philips A19 LED with a warm glow dimming effect has an average lifetime of 25,000 hours. This means if you have a light bulb on for three hours per day, then it will be 20 years before you need to change it. Plus, LEDs use up to 90 percent less energy than ordinary light bulbs; replacing incandescent bulbs with LED lighting will reduce your energy bill. Myth: LED light bulbs are not bright enough. Fact: LEDs can emit the same amount of light as incandescent bulbs while using far less energy. Many consumers look at the wattage of a light bulb to determine its level of brightness, but wattage only measures how much energy a bulb uses. Light levels are measured in lumens. When you compare lumens, a 9.5-watt Philips LED bulb with a warm glow effect is as bright as a 60watt incandescent bulb - both emit
approximately 800 lumens. Myth: LED light bulbs need time to warm up. Fact: It’s a big misunderstanding that LED bulbs need time to warm up before they reach full brightness. While fluorescent or CFL bulbs come on slowly, LEDs are “instantly on” and immediately shine with their full light output. Myth: LED lighting can’t be controlled and dimmed. Fact: Unlike many CFL bulbs, most LED light bulbs are designed to easily dim. Dimmable LEDs can provide the right lighting for any mood or room in your home. For instance, the warm glow dimmable light effect in the Philips A19 LED allows light levels to gradually go from everyday functional lighting to a cozy, relaxing warm glow, replicating the effect of an incandescent bulb when dimmed.

DECOR
Weekend warrior ideas Take your home from boring to beautiful
It often feels like there aren’t enough hours in a day to accomplish chores; let alone home improvements. Luckily, several do-it-yourself projects can spiff up your space with little time and resources. To take your home from drab to fab, get started with these easy projects you can accomplish in one weekend. LAUNDRY ROOM FACELIFT The laundry room doesn’t have to be a dull, boring place. It can be comfortable and pleasant, while still highly functional. Incorporate new storage pieces and essentials, like hampers and drying racks to rid clutter. Consider installing a countertop above the washer and dryer – if you have side-by-side models – to create a smooth surface for folding and sorting. Also, keep detergent and fabric softener in glass dispensers for a more decorative look. Lastly, paint the space a pretty, soothing color to give the room a refreshed feel and make it feel larger. PAINT AN ACCENT WALL For an easy, inexpensive way to add drama to any room, paint an accent wall. Perfect for highlighting a focal point, such as a fireplace or shelving unit, an accent wall commands attention. According to celebrity designer Taniya Nayak, brightly colored walls or furniture, and bold, vibrant prints, are in style. So breathe new life into a room by incorporating these elements. The key to painting is all in preparation, including washing down walls and taping around windows and baseboards. One of the most important tools you’ll need is a premium painter’s tape, like FrogTape brand painter’s tape. Treated with PaintBlock Technology, FrogTape Multi-Surface and Delicate Surface painting tapes can be used on a variety of surfaces and deliver sharp paint lines for professionallooking results. ENLIVEN A BACKSPLASH In the kitchen, a few cans of paint will work wonders on walls, cabinets, a kitchen island and your backsplash. Paint your backsplash a solid color, use a stencil, or even create the look of faux tiles using painter’s tape. Consider the other colors in the room before settling on the perfect shade. If cabinets are dark, choose a lighter shade for the backsplash to keep the room from feeling too heavy. If you have white or light-colored cabinets, a bright or darker paint provides contrast. For the finish, opt for a glossy sheen, as it’s more durable and easily wipes clean. REJUVENATE FURNITURE There are many quick, inexpensive ways to rejuvenate existing furniture. Swap pieces around to instantly redefine the space. Plus, you can use this opportunity to thoroughly clean those tough-to-reach spots. A fresh coat of paint can also provide a powerful update to such furniture as stools, chairs, bookshelves and dressers. (STATEPOINT)

You don’t have to let paint drips on the floor detract from the beauty of new paint on your walls. Use masking tape and tarps to protect the areas not being painted.
FIVE HANDY POINTERS on painting your home
A fresh coat of paint can be one of the easiest and most inexpensive ways to update a home’s decor and value. With the right tools and tips, even first-time painters can learn to paint like a pro. Prep the area Remove furniture, wall hangings, and light switch and outlet covers. Protect floors from drips and spills with canvas sheeting. Apply painter’s tape along trim, molding and windows. Use a putty knife to ensure that tape is securely adhered around edges. Start with a clean slate For a truly professional look, start with a smooth, clean surface. Fill in nail holes and cracks with Spackle. Remove dust, dirt, grease, and glossy finishes with a nontoxic, trisodium phosphate substitute such as Mötsenböcker’s Lift Off All Surface Paint Prep. This not only makes your finished project look better, it helps the paint last longer. Use the right tools Before you apply your first coat, be sure you have all the right tools for the job. A nylon-polyester brush will work with nearly any type of latex paint. Rollers can be used to paint large surfaces such as walls. Look for a cover with a ½˝ to ¾˝ nap. Paint spills and drips are practically inevitable, but Mötsenböcker’s Lift Off Latex Based Paint Remover can be handy for easy cleanup.

An accent wall with bold designs can breathe new life into a room. It’s an easy and inexpensive way to brighten a room.
Brush up on good techniques Paint one wall at a time starting at the top so drips fall on unpainted areas. Brush on paint around trim and in the corners of walls. Use a paint roller for larger surfaces. Roll paint into a three-by-three-foot W pattern. Continue rolling until all sections are painted, adding fresh

paint to the roller as it dries. Most paints will require two coats and some darker shades may require three. Clean up Remove tape immediately after painting, before the wall dries, so fresh paint isn’t peeled off with it. Check for paint drips and spills on floors, hardware and furniture. Use a dry cloth to wipe wet paint from surfaces. Then apply a paint remover such as Mötsenböcker’s Lift Off to the surface. Gently agitate dried paint with a soft-bristle brush, then blot dry. REDUCE SEASONAL ALLERGIES and improve your home’s air quality Affecting almost 50 million people in the United States, seasonal allergies like hay fever primarily start to escalate as fall progresses, according to the American College of Allergy, Asthma and Immunology. Now is the perfect time to start to take measures to reduce and potentially eliminate additional airborne triggers, such as ragweed, which often worsen symptoms. Instead of moving to a new climate to avoid allergies, take a few quick and easy steps to significantly reduce indoor air pollutants. Manage your home’s cleanliness Even though it’s hard to defend against the pollen and other allergy spikes that occur during the changing of seasons, there are many different steps you can take in your home to limit the impact of airborne pollutants. Regulate dust Control dust mites by using anti-dust mite covers and washing sheets in hot water about once a week. Avoid smoke Avoid non-ventilated and smoky rooms that could increase nose, throat and eye irritation.
Improve the air inside your home As the weather continues to get colder around the country, people will be spending more time indoors with the windows closed. Lack of ventilation can often cause buildup of particles in the air.
If possible, keep pets off of furniture and out of the bedroom and bathroom to reduce the spread of their dander.
Filter first Help reduce these irritants by installing an AccuClean Whole-Home Filtration System from American Standard Heating and Air Conditioning. The revolutionary system is 100 times more effective than a standard 1-inch throwaway filter, removing up to 99.98 percent of allergens from the air. Control moisture Keeping your home’s humidity between 30-60 percent will help prevent the gathering of dust mites. Simple actions like turning on a fan when bathing or cooking, using a dehumidifier, and not overwatering plants are all quick ways to keep the humidity levels down. Cover up When tearing down or putting up drywall, ensure the room is sealed off from the rest of house by putting up plastic sheets over doors and closing vents. Sealing the room will minimize the

spread of dust and other particles from entering the rest of the home. Paint responsibly If you’re adding a splash of color to a room or simply restoring an old piece of future with a new paint job, select a low
VOC paint (VOCs are solvents that get released into the air as the paint dries). Breathing in high levels of VOCs can lead to worsened asthma symptoms, headaches, throat irritation and more, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission. (BPT)
