EXTERIOR Homeowners should make sure their roof is in good repair before winter hits with its full force. The attic is one of the best places to spot problems and much safer than climbing a ladder to view the roof from the top.

Clues in the attic Pre-winter roof checkups made easy
Your attic could save you from breaking your neck this autumn. Got your attention, huh? Seriously, this is one of the two times each year when homeowners are supposed to check the health of their roofs. (Among other reasons, because they’re key to a home’s energy efficiency.) But who wants to be climbing a ladder 25 feet or so into the sky when the weather is turning sharply

colder and nastier? That’s where your attic comes in. According to Jason Joplin, program manager of the Center for the Advancement of Roofing Excellence, that space you’re probably using mainly for storage can substitute, as a fallback, for the eyeball roof check normally recommended to be done every prewinter and spring. “Roofs actually create an insulated barrier that helps trap heat inside, and most attic spaces are located right below them,” says Joplin. “That makes them perfect for spotting potential problem areas and damage without worrying about falling off a ladder.” Here’s what to look for while up there: • Water leaks – As sure as Tom Brady will never be a favorite among
Deflategated Indianapolis Colts fans, it will soon storm. And when it does, shine a flashlight up in the attic to check not only for dripping water and condensation, but also for water stains on the ceiling, walls and floors. All signal that H2O is finding its way beneath your roof’s shingles or behind its flashings. • Ventilation – “Think of the attic as the lungs of the house,” advises Joplin. “It has to be able to breathe in order to function properly.” Which is to say, vents stuffed with debris need to be cleared. • Animal damage – You know those “If you see something, say something” homeland security ads? Well, to avoid the havoc refuge-seeking birds, bats, squirrels and raccoons can create, warning bells should likewise sound – followed by a call to a pest-control pro

– if you spot any of these telltale signs: nests, droppings and gnawed wood, wires or insulations. • Structural problems – The mere hint of a sagging roof – look up for this one – could indicate potential structural weakness requiring professional repair. And if prolonging your roof’s life is your goal, experts say it pays to consult a professional roofing contractor who’s insured and uses quality materials like the new triple-layer line of Glenwood Shingles – the thickest of its kind, with an authentic wood-shake look – from GAF, North America’s largest roofing manufacturer. conserve water as well as make tasks in and around the sink easier. The spray wand features Reflex technology, which allows for easy and secure docking of the wand. 3. Get smart with heating. You may think your old thermostat is doing just fine, but the truth is a new one can save you up to 12 percent on heating and 15 percent on cooling, according to The Nest. The Nest Thermostat is a new-age way to conserve resources through its ability to learn your schedule and teach you how to save through notifications. In turn, it’ll save you money, since you’ll be heating and cooling your home only when necessary. 4. Water heater cool down. The furnace isn’t the only place to save by turning down the temperature. Many water heaters are set to 140 degrees, which can actually be dangerous and cause scalding. Simply lowering the temperature 20 degrees can save you $36 to $61 annually, according to the U.S. Department of Energy. This will also slow mineral buildup and corrosion in the water heater and pipes, saving significant money in the long run by preserving the life of your unit.

Cooler temperatures signal it’s time to switch gears and prepare your home for the approaching winter. A few modifications can go a long way - here are four key projects to winterize your abode, help you stay warm and save money this coming season and beyond. 1. Stop letting money slip through the cracks. An easy way to winterize and keep heat in is to find drafts and seal them. In fact, drafts can waste five to 30 percent of a home’s energy usage according to the U.S. Department of Energy. Keep drafts at bay by simply placing a rolled bath towel under doors and seal gaps in windows with caulk, or apply weather stripping or window winterizing film to keep the warm air from escaping. Can’t find the drafts? Simply run your finger around edges of windows and doors to feel where air is leaking; or use a flashlight to see where light passes through. 2. Save water year-round. The kitchen is one of the hardest working areas in the house, and installing a low-flow faucet can help cut back on your water bills. Choose an option with a pulldown spray wand, like the Kendall kitchen faucet from Moen, that helps

Home for the holidays Quick, inexpensive ways to give your house a holiday facelift
A seasonal home makeover doesn’t need to cost a fortune or be difficult to execute. Quick, easy and innovative ideas, can give your home the holiday flair needed to celebrate the season. “Seasonal décor updates should jive with your home’s style, while also adding something extra to the mix,” says Eric Cohler, who has been listed as a top international designer by House Beautiful and Elle Décor magazines. “Keep it easy though, so that when the season is over, you won’t end up with a lack of motivation to refresh, and a space that feels passé.” To add wintry elements to your home without completely revamping your interior, consider these ideas: Rotating gallery A digital photo display is the easiest way to showcase seasonably suitable photos of friends and family. In winter, that means images from your greatest holiday parties, school pageants and winter vacations. Consider rotating the artwork displayed in your home to highlight seasonal colors. Whether you want to get traditional or focus on winter’s natural hues, this task won’t take long to do and will have a big impact on the look and feel of each room. Pops of color “With relatively little effort, you can add bright, bold colors to your home by swapping out the knobs and handles on your cabinets, credenzas and other furniture,” says Cohler. Seasonal sets of cabinet hardware can keep the look fresh in your home. All you need is a screwdriver and a few hours. A free web-based application, Splash by Amerock, offers a new interactive design and shopping experience by allowing you to truly customize hardware for cabinets and furniture. The interactive site and first of its kind product line allows you to test various colors and shapes of cabinetry hardware and view the different looks on different style and color cabinets. From kitchens to bathrooms to bedrooms and living areas, you can make your rooms pop with bold colors. Think reds and greens for Christmas or silver and white for a cool winter feel. Hardware is easy to swap out and you can give your home a fun, fresh fall makeover inexpensively and without much hassle. To check out 20 unique color options, visit www.Amerock.com. Curtains Another easy way to make a quick look-and-feel change to a room is by swapping out curtains. It’s a great way to customize a space to better fit the mood of the season. What’s more -- a quarterly rotation of window treatments presents a muchneeded opportunity for a good cleaning. Be sure to store freshly laundered linens in a sealed bag so they don’t collect dust. When they make their appearance the following year, they will be vibrant and fresh. (STATEPOINT)

Proper media room lighting creates an enhanced TV viewing experience. Adding layers of lighting allows for more control on the amount and quality of light in the room.
How to choose the
perfect lighting for a media room
Now that football season is underway, it’s time to make sure your media room is up to the task of hosting fans and providing the best atmosphere for cheering on your team. The American Lighting Association offers great play-by-play tips to effectively light your media room. Reduce glare Brent Protzman, manager of energy information and analytics for Lutron Electronics Company Inc., says Lutron conducts extensive research to determine how lighting and shading controls influence visual entertainment. That’s because some people like to check their fantasy football teams or catch highlights on their laptops, tablets or smartphones while still watching the game on TV. Protzman says, “Glare from the amount of daylight can be overwhelming on these devices. The trick is to lower shades and dim overhead lights to make it easier to do tasks.” Joe Rey-Barreau, an education consultant for the ALA and an associate professor at the University of Kentucky’s School of Interiors and College of Design says, “Using different lighting layers is always the best option for media rooms. A single lighting layer could be fixtures that are of the same type. For example,” he explains, “one layer could be recessed lighting in the media room, another layer could be wall sconces, a third layer could be an integrated
architectural lighting system such as a cove or niche.” Adding three layers of light, along with dimmers, gives homeowners the maximum level of control over their lighting, which effectively illuminates the room without too much glare. Dim the lights Light fixtures such as pendants and glass globes tend to create bright spots in a room, which can be problematic for viewing television screens with direct glare and reflections on the glass. To create the perfect viewing atmosphere, Protzman suggests dimming light fixtures to a very low level. “Your eyes will be able to quickly adjust and adapt to the changes in light levels,” he says. According to Protzman, people tend to perceive smaller decreases in light level than what really changes. This means if you dim a light by what seems to be 30 percent in brightness, you will actually reduce the light level by as much as 90 percent. Not only do light dimmers allow you to create a media space to your liking, but, as an added bonus, they save energy as well. To receive the best product selection and professional expertise, visit your local ALA-member retailer for media room lighting options. Simple tips to creating a room that’s truly ‘you’ with paint color When it comes to transforming your home with design and paint projects, selecting paint color is easier than you think; and with a few expert tips and simple steps, you’ll gain the confidence needed to transform your home with colors that reflect both your personality and lifestyle.

look at the other paint colors in your home. A balanced color scheme that seamlessly connects one space to the next creates a sense of continuity and harmony throughout the home. Choose between three and five favorite colors and then alternate between rooms. Perhaps the ceiling color in one room becomes an accent wall in another.
Setting the stage Before heading to the paint aisle, consider the mood and functionality of the room you are looking to transform. Are you seeking a restful and calming haven in the bedroom? Do you prefer a sociable and stimulating environment in the dining area? Maybe it’s a combination of both in the living room? Understanding the purpose of the room – both in the mood it conveys and the function it serves – will help you hone in on colors that are best suited for it. If you aren’t sure, you can start by looking for a favorite item in the room – a piece of furniture, a rug or beloved artwork – to use as the centerpiece to build around. This item provides a potential starting point to help determine the color palette or hues to work with. And don’t forget to take a step back and
Selecting the color Color expert Sue Wadden explains that color selection is a very personal choice but there is also a method to picking the color that fits best with the mood, tone and function of a room. Here is her take on the most popular paint color groups: • Red is viewed as an exciting, vibrant color with a passionate feel. The deepest reds, such as burgundy and maroon, give a feeling of richness – excellent for bringing out the competitive spirit in a game room. • Orange radiates cheerfulness and boldness but can still be subdued and calming. A vibrant orange fills a space, such as a dining room, with energy and a sunny disposition while a softer orange brings a feeling of

From the ground up Where new floors come from is as important as how they look
Some learned the hard way that just because a new floor looks good and the price was right it might not be the best option for you and your family. Where a floor comes from, the company that manufactures the floor, and the retailer that sells and installs it are critical considerations when it’s time to buy new floors. Consider the expense and the impact installing new floors will have on you and your family. We all know by now that being an informed consumer is essential. Working with credible companies that always have your back – from the decision process to years after your installation – will make the process as smooth as possible. Your first task when buying new floors is to be informed and prepared. Even before you seek the store, you should get a sense of what types of flooring would suit you and your family best. Remember, your floor not only has to look good and feel comfortable, it has to be able to take whatever you, your kids, pets and guests care to dish out for years on end.
Do you want a floor that stands up to heavy traffic? Is easy to clean? Warms the room? Blends well with walls and furniture? How much space do you have? What’s your budget? Once you consider these questions, a flooring professional will walk you through the remaining steps to find the best floor to suit you and your family. For help finding a reputable flooring store in your area, check out www. wfca.org, which offers a database of certified flooring retailers across the country. Once you identify a few local stores, check out their reviews on Yelp and Angie’s List. Read the customer testimonials to help make your selection. Another great resource is friends and colleagues who have had new floors installed – find out about their experiences, the good and the bad. The flooring dealer you select should be dialed into your tastes and needs. Stores that sell a variety of goods for the home – tools, plants, groceries and so on – likely will not have the range of products and prices and the in-depth flooring
knowledge that you can find in a specialty store. You also can’t count on finding the same sales associate when you go back for more information or with an issue. Specialty flooring retailers are professionally trained and specialize in just one thing – flooring. Salespeople in these stores make it their business to know the qualities and characteristics of flooring products, as well as the latest styles, colors, trends and proper installation techniques. There may even be interior designers affiliated with the store who can help you find the floor that’s best for your home. Independent flooring retailers invest in continuing education to keep themselves at the forward edge of the industry’s technologies and fashions. They know which manufacturers they can rely on to bring you quality products. They can guide you step by step to get the most out of each square foot of flooring. Since their business is dependent on it, an independent retailer selling flooring

Everything including the kitchen sink 5 high-impact renovation projects for DIYers Do-it-yourselfers are generally a “cando” bunch, willing to tackle just about any home-renovation project – except perhaps installing a new kitchen sink. But with the right innovative product and a little selfconfidence, it’s possible to get fabulous results for kitchen projects that you never thought you could do yourself – even installing a new, stainless-steel kitchen sink. Kitchen sink replacement Both utilitarian and a vital design element, the kitchen sink is one project that many DIYers hesitate to take on. Properly mounting a traditional sink requires precisely positioning and securing a number of clips – while twisting like a contortionist in the cabinet under the sink. A first-time DIYer could invest hours
of time and frustration in getting the placement just right. Enter the first-of-its kind FrankeUSA Fast-In Quick Install System. The system uses special pre-attached clips that allow homeowners to simply drop the sink into place from above the countertop. Because the clips are already in perfect position to secure the sink to the countertop, no special tools are required for the top-mount installation. Once the sink is in place, the DIYer simply presses down until the Fast-In clips click into position. The 18-gauge stainless steel sink is classically styled, offering two generously sized 9-inch-deep basins and a universal four-hole configuration for a faucet, spray and accessories. The sink’s narrow center divider, unique slim-rim design and extradeep ledges provide ample work space,

Kitchen redesign doesn’t have to be difficult or costly. Some of the most attractive and effective upgrades are actually the easiest for DIYers – and the most rewarding.
while helping keep water in the sink and off countertops. The system works with laminate, tile and solid-surface countertops. Learn more at www.frankeusa.com. Cabinet refurbishment Replacing cabinets can be costly and
time-consuming. Hanging them requires accurate measuring, proficiency with a level, a keen eye and a steady hand. But rather than hanging new cabinets, it’s possible to upgrade the ones you have, create a fresh look and improve their efficiency.

Kitchen Mart explains bathtub materials The endless remodeling options available to homeowners are a source of both excitement and challenges. In the bathroom, homeowners can custom select flooring, fixtures, counters, walls, sinks, lighting, showerheads, and more. One choice that may require professional guidance is the bathtub material – a decision that is often overlooked until all the options are presented. “People are usually surprised by how many types of bathtubs there are,” said Matt Godfread, designer with Wisconsin Kitchen Mart. “There are positives and negatives for each bathtub material, so we help homeowners narrow it down to the one that’s right for their needs and their style.” Before the bathtub is chosen, he urges homeowners to consider a few things. “What are the exact dimensions of the space where the tub is going?” he asked. “How will it be installed – free-standing, under-mounted, drop-in, or alcove style? Do you want room left around the tub for a tiled ledge?” Sorting out the size and position details ahead of time will help to narrow down the best bathtub material for the job. Godfread offered the pros and cons of the three most common bathtub material options. Fiberglass Reinforced Plastic is made of layers of fiberglass coated with resin. Pros – “It’s the least expensive bathtub material and pretty easy to install,” he said. FRP, which is lightweight and available in multiple sizes and shapes, is able to have the finish repaired if damaged.
FILE PHOTO Homes & Design
The options when choosing a bathtub are almost endless.
Cons – These tubs are thin and less durable. “FRP has a short life, typically less than 10 years,” he said, noting that the finish has a tendency to fade, scratch, and sometimes crack. The surface is susceptible to mold and stains. Acrylic tubs are fiberglass under colored acrylic. Pros – Acrylic tubs are lightweight and, like FRP, the finish can be repaired if needed. There are many shape, size, and
color choices. They’re stronger than FRP tubs and more resistant to chemicals and mildew. “Acrylic can last 30 years if you maintain it,” he said. Cons – These bathtubs cost about twice as much as FRP and enameled steel. Over time, the finish can get discolored or scratched if not maintained properly. Cast Iron tubs are solid iron coated with a thick layer of enamel. Pros – “It’s the most durable tub
available. If you want a tub that will last forever without chips or scratches, this is it,” Godfread said. Cast iron comes in many colors, resists chemicals, and retains heat. Cons – In addition to being one of the most expensive tubs on the market, cast iron is extremely heavy. “There’s some extra labor involved. We may need to add extra reinforcement to your floor.” According to Godfread, there are several less common options also available. “Solid surface materials are durable and do a good job retaining heat. They come in a lot of nice colors and sizes too.” Being relatively new in the bathtub market, though, solid surface bathtubs have a long lead-time to get, and they’re a heavier and more expensive option. Likewise, cultured marble and customordered natural stone materials are durable but expensive. “The more custom you go with the material, the more maintenance you’ll probably have,” he said. A bathtub can even come in certain types of wood if the homeowner is willing to maintain it. What are the ideal price, maintenance, size, and shape? “Try it out,” Godfread said. “Sit or lay in different tubs before you buy. Bigger and more expensive aren’t necessarily better. Choose a tub that’s the right shape for your bathroom, but also the right shape and contour for your comfort.” For more information, visit Wisconsin Kitchen Mart’s showroom, 3601 W. Wisconsin Ave., or call (414) 342-3300 or visit WisconsinKitchenMart.com.

• PAINT COLOR Continued from Page 6 warmth and coziness to a living room. • Yellow is a warm and inviting color that brings a sense of optimism and joy to the space it inhabits. Softer yellow tones convey happiness while giving the room a sophisticated and timeless look. Brighter shades have the ability to fill virtually any room in the house with a feeling of bliss. • Cool earthen tones of green add a splash of nature to the room, giving it a sense of comfort and harmony. When looking to create an atmosphere that is both soothing and sunny, try incorporating several shades of green. • Lighter shades of blue evoke feelings of serenity and comfort when used in the bedroom. These calming tones make for a relaxing way to end the day and a great way to encourage a restful night’s sleep. Brighter hues bring warmth and a sunny temperament to the room. • Purple is a versatile color that anchors a space but also compliments the
use of neutrals and patterns. It conveys a feeling of luxury and refinement while still giving the room a fresh, soft look. • Similar to green, brown is associated with nature. This relaxed neutral is a great color to incorporate into spaces in the home that are for both living and working. Darker hues look sophisticated and stylish while lighter shades give the space a warm and modern vibe. • Gray is an elegant neutral that provides depth when paired with subtle accent colors. It evokes feelings of sophistication and airiness to create a haven of relaxation and calm. Test-drive color choice Once you have chosen your preferred colors, Wadden recommends sampling the colors at home in various stages of light. Lighting is one of the most essential factors when selecting paint color. Natural daylight shows the truest hue, while
incandescent lighting brings out warm tones and yellows and fluorescent lighting casts cooler, bluer tones. The easiest way to test how light affects color is to simply tape the color chip on a wall that sees both natural and artificial light. Or for a more effective analysis, get small paint samples of each color, such as Dutch Boy Platinum Interior Color Samples or Dutch Boy Twist & Try, and apply large swatches directly on the wall. Watch the color over the course of several days. Fluctuations in natural light can vary from sunny skies to cloudy days. Time of day is really important as well – color that looks bright and cheery in the morning can appear duller at nighttime. Gauging number of gallons Once you are confident in your color choice, the next step is to find out how much paint you’ll need to paint the room. DutchBoy.com has an easy-to-follow
paint calculator for both interior and exterior paint projects. Simply enter the dimensions of your room along with the number of windows and doors and the calculator will tell you how much paint is needed to complete this project. Consider the number of coats needed for each job and factor that in as well. Be sure to reference the paint label for square foot coverage. No matter what you are looking for, Dutch Boy has a great number of color choices that run the spectrum. And with a new website that features everything from inspiration to color advice and painting tips, possibilities of designing and creating a room that’s truly “you” are limitless. Check out the store locator on DutchBoy. com to find a nearby retailer. For additional painting tips, color advice and project ideas, visit www. dutchboy.com. (NAPS)
• FLOORS Continued from Page 7 exclusively tends to be invested in having happy, satisfied customers and so is likely to stock the brands that best provide value and customer satisfaction over the long term. Plus, they’ll be there to answer any questions you may have when the floor is installed – or even years later. After all, repeat customers and word of mouth are how they stay in business.
When you’ve found the right floor for your home as well as the store you want to work with, one last step may help you save a little more time, trouble and money. Ask your retailer these questions and make sure you are happy with the responses: Do you offer warranties and guarantee customer satisfaction with the end result? Who will be responsible for
the flooring installation? Is the installer’s work 100 percent covered by the store? Will you be provided with and given final approval of a complete budget with a thorough breakdown of all costs including fees and services? Get the name and contact information of someone at the store whom you can reach in case of an emergency after hours
or on the weekend. And lastly, find out whom to reach out to at the store if there is a problem down the road. Don’t forget quiet when shopping for a gas furnace
No question about it – comfort is top of mind when homeowners are in the market for a new gas furnace. Everyone wants to be warm and cozy when outdoor temperatures begin to fall, and they want that comfort delivered quietly. That’s why it’s important to add quiet operation to your list of requirements as you shop for a new furnace. Several factors affect the noise level of a gas furnace, beginning with the unit’s efficiency rating. In the case of gas furnaces, efficiency is expressed as an annual fuel utilization efficiency rating. AFUE ratings range between a minimum of 80 percent to a maximum of 98.5 percent and represent the
ratio of fuel that is converted into usable heat. In other words, the highest-performing furnace converts 98.5 percent of its fuel into heat. The remaining 1.5 percent is lost through the exhaust. Generally speaking, the more efficient a furnace is, the quieter it operates. Single-stage, two-stage or modulating technology also impacts furnace sound levels. Traditional single-stage gas furnaces operate much like a lightbulb – they are either on or off. This can create highly noticeable fluctuations in temperature and sound in your home, as the unit turns on and off frequently.
Two-stage gas furnaces offer an intermediate level of performance. Operation varies between first and second stage based on demand, resulting in fewer stops and starts and quieter operation, especially when the unit is running at the lower first stage. Modulating gas furnaces maintain an ideal temperature by modulating heating levels in small increments. Comfort is dramatically increased as the furnace adjusts its level of operation up or down to offset the rate at which heat leaves your home. At the same time, operation is considerably quieter – in the case of variable-speed models, as much as 24 times less noisy than
conventional furnaces. Finally, the size of ductwork can impact sound levels. So when you select a furnace, be certain your ductwork is large enough to accommodate the airflow (measured in cubic feet per minute, or cfm) the furnace pushes. Ductwork that is too small can result in whistling sounds throughout the system. To help, the Champion brand from Johnson Controls offers a variety of gas furnaces to meet your heating needs comfortably and quietly. To learn more, visit www. championhomecomfort.com.
backsplash. Depending on your design goals and the level of difficulty you’re comfortable with, you could choose to install ceramic or glass tile (which is moderately challenging). Or you might opt for self-adhesive vinyl tiles that mimic the look of tin or copper. Look to online resources like Pinterest for inspiration.
selection of off-the-shelf organizers. For example: • Rollout organizers go easily into lower cabinets and hold lids, bakeware and serving dishes. • Pullout mesh drawers make it easy to organize and access cleaning products below the sink. • Turntables fit easily into upper cabinets and allow you to find spices quickly. • Undershelf baskets expand your storage area and put frequently used items at your fingertips. • Gravity-feed can racks – like the soup displays in the grocery store – help keep pantries organized.

• HIGH-IMPACT Continued from Page 8 If your cabinets are in good shape but just look dated, cosmetic fixes are easy. Paint or refinish them in a hue that fits your design vision, and replace older hardware with contemporary designs. It’s easy to replace doors that are damaged or too shabby to repair; home-improvement stores now offer cabinet refacing materials, a variety of door styles, and tips for DIYers who want to swap out cabinet doors.
you can still refresh your counters. Laminate is one of the most common and cheapest materials for countertops. It’s also the material that’s easiest to make look like something expensive and professionally installed, such as granite, concrete or marble. You can find a number of kits that provide all the materials and instructions you need to refinish laminate countertops for a whole new look.
Countertop refresh Installing new countertops is also a significant job that many homeowners choose to leave to professionals. However, if you don’t have the budget to pay someone to install new countertops for you, and don’t have the skills to do it yourself,
Beautiful backsplashes A great backsplash creates a visual focal point in the kitchen. It is also functional, protecting walls from stovetop splatters. You might think something that looks that good requires professional installation, but it’s actually easy to create a beautiful
