Four winter-blues-busting home improvement projects

Three percent of the U.S. population suffers from seasonal affective disorder every winter, according to Psychology Today. But you don’t have to be diagnosed with an actual disorder to suffer a bad case of the winter blues – it can happen to anyone. Since climate and environment have a lot to do with causing winter doldrums, you might find engaging in some home improvement projects can make you feel happier and healthier this winter. Freshening your space can feel good any time of year, but certain projects are perfectly aligned to give you a muchneeded mood boost when it turns cold or wet weather sets in. Here are four projects that not only can brighten your outlook they can also be good for your wallet: Install skylights Avoiding SAD is preferable to

treatment and skylights can help you maximize the amount of natural light that enters your home this winter. More natural light is good for you on many levels. Sunlight stimulates the body’s production of Vitamin D and increases the levels of serotonin in your brain; lower serotonin levels are thought to be associated with depression, lack of energy, elevated appetite and excessive sleepiness. What’s more, if you opt for Energy Star-qualified solar-powered fresh-air skylights, like those made by Velux America, you can also help improve indoor air quality. These skylights open, providing passive ventilation to allow stale indoor air to escape and fresh air to enter, and they close automatically in case of rain.

Skylights can also be good for your financial health. Solar powered skylights, along with solar powered blinds, as well as installation costs, are eligible for a 30 percent federal tax credit. Also, more natural light in your home on a dark winter day can help decrease your need for artificial lighting. And sunshine can help warm the interior of your home and support the work your furnace does to keep the house comfortable. Skylights can be installed in many areas of your home with kitchens and baths being among the most popular choices for more natural light, fresh air, and privacy. Even areas without direct roof access, like hallways and closets,

How to stay within your home improvement budget Home improvement projects range from smallscale undertakings that can be tackled in a single weekend to large remodels that can take several months to complete. While no two projects are the same, every home improvement project demands that homeowners dip into their pockets and spend some money. Much like the scale of projects varies greatly, so, too, do the financial commitments required of homeowners to make those projects a reality. But no matter the size of the project, homeowners can find ways to stretch their budgets without sacrificing the quality of their improvements.

mold inside the walls when you’re converting a basement, and it can cost a pretty penny to make that mold go away. If you go into the project expecting such hurdles, then the financial sting of addressing them won’t prove too great a burden. But if the mold catches you and your budget completely off guard, you might be forced to overextend that budget or make sacrifices elsewhere in order to complete the project. Build some contingency money, including permit and permit fees, into your home improvement project to safeguard against such unforeseen issues.

DO YOUR HOMEWORK

If you’re hiring a contractor, speak to him or her before signing a contract to see if there is anywhere you can pitch in to keep the labor costs low. You might be able to pitch in during the demolition phase, saving the cost of paying your contractor’s workers to tear down walls or remove debris you can just as easily remove yourself. Another way to pitch in is to do the end-of-day cleanup yourself. Any role you play with regard to labor will likely need to be negotiated upfront, but you can save yourself a substantial amount of money on labor if you’re willing to get your hands dirty.

Budget-friendly ProWood fencing is produced in several styles of convenient, prebuilt panels as well as individual fence pickets.

DETERMINE IF PIECEMEAL IS THE MOST AFFORDABLE OPTION

Are you afraid your chances to complete a DIY project this year are over because colder temperatures are coming? If you are, the good news is there’s no need to worry. You still have plenty of time to tackle that

Before you decide to make changes to your home, it’s best to first do some research into any potential projects you’re considering. Many homeowners have decided to dive into a project before they fully realize its scope and cost, and going in blind can bust a budget, turning what might have seemed like a relatively simple project into a money pit. Understanding just what a project entails and how much it’s likely to cost can give homeowners an idea of what they can afford and where they might be able to stretch their budgets. For example, if you want to replace your kitchen countertops but can’t afford engineered quartz countertops, you might be able to find a less expensive alternative, such as tile, that you like just as much. But it’s best to research such alternatives before you decide to replace your existing countertops. If you can’t find a less expensive alternative, you might want to postpone the project until you can grow your budget. But starting the project without first grasping its true cost is a recipe for disaster, so do your homework before you find your toolbox and start working.

BUILD UNFORESEEN EXPENSES INTO YOUR BUDGET

Another way to stay within your budget is to include budget-busting unforeseen expenses into the budget from the get-go. Whether you’re doing the project yourself or paying a contractor, nearly every home improvement project will present some unforeseen, and costly, hurdles. For example, you might find

GET TO WORK

Sometimes it makes sense to tackle one project at a time, while other times you might want to combine projects to save on the cost of materials. For instance, if your ultimate goal is to install wood flooring throughout your home, determine if it makes more financial sense to install the flooring all at once rather than doing one or two rooms at a time. You might save by buying all of your materials at once rather than buying a small amount of materials several times over the next several years. Home improvement projects often go a long way toward making a home more enjoyable for its owners and inhabitants. And while such projects can be costly, homeowners who stay disciplined can still get their dream homes without busting their budgets.

and you’ll be able to enjoy your home’s updated outdoor appearance long before cooler temperatures push you inside for good. Here are five projects you can get started on today: Close the cracks This is a wonderful time to seal cracks in your driveway before temperature fluctuations can make the damage any worse. Start by cleaning the area and then applying the proper sealer. The sealer you choose depends on the size of the cracks. You can use concrete patches or paints, caulk, grout or vinyl patches to seal smaller cracks while larger cracks commonly require a combination of cement and grout. Apply the sealing solution to the crack and then let it dry before smoothing it over.

FIVE fabulous fall upgrades

can extend your deck time this year

Who says you have to give up time on the deck you love just because summer is over? Whether you’re just relaxing or tackling home improvement projects, time outdoors is a great way to recharge at the end of a hectic day or tiring week.

Add decorative touches like post caps and privacy lattice Just having a deck adds value to your home, but you can easily make yours more appealing and enjoyable by adding some decorative touches. Post caps are an easy-to-install way to dress up an ordinary deck railing. Deck product manufacturers like Deckorators offer extensive post cap options, including wood designs, metal and decorative caps that incorporate stained glass, metal accents and even solar lighting. Lattice is another way to add interest to your deck, while creating privacy at the same time. Durable plastic lattice from Deckorators allows you to visually shield

areas of your deck, or block off the space beneath your deck to keep animals from slipping under it. Not sure how the decorative element of your choice will look on your deck? Deckorators’ website provides a deck visualizer to help you understand how your design choices might look on your deck. Visit www.deckorators.com to learn more.

Light the way to longer hours of enjoyment As summer winds down, days grow shorter. Adding lighting to your deck can help you enjoy fall evenings outdoors. Low-voltage LED lighting can help illuminate steps, accent your deck railing and create areas of interest – all while using less electricity to save you money. Deckorators offers an LV light system that easily clips onto deck railings, making installation quick and easy for most DIYers.

Plant the seeds of great seasons to come Landscaping adds value and relaxation to a deck area. Wooden planters are a great way to enhance a deck’s visual appeal. Building a planter is an easy weekend project, and provides you the perfect location to plant some fall veggies as well. Add a removable lid to the planting box and you can turn it into additional seating when the growing season is over. When spring comes, remove the lid and you’re ready to plant spring vegetables or flowers.

Warm up the decor Fall is a great time to score deals on outdoor decor. Deck furniture, outdoor area rugs and decorative items all go on sale as summer ends – even though in many areas of the country there will be plenty of warm days and evenings left in which to enjoy your outdoor spaces. Simply

replacing worn furniture and adding an area rug can make your deck feel warmer and more inviting.

Heat up your outdoor space Of course, your outdoor environment will eventually get chilly as fall settles in. Why not add an outdoor heater to extend your deck time even longer? Home improvement and lawn and garden stores sell a variety of patio heaters in a range of designs to fit every space, taste and need. A single, well-placed heater can provide enough warmth to keep your entire deck comfortable on a chilly fall evening. Need an additional source of warmth to supplement your patio heater? Fire up the grill and fill the fall air with the aroma of grilled treats. Don’t let fall drive you indoors too soon. A few simple updates can allow you to enjoy your deck throughout the autumn months.

INTERIOR

SMALL SPACE

doesn’t mean no creativity No matter where you live, you want to make the most of your available living and storage space. This is especially true for residents in urban areas who typically have smaller living spaces. And urban living is on the rise. As of 2010, more than half of all people lived in an urban area, and by 2030 it is anticipated that six out of every 10 people will be living in a city, according to the World Health Organization. But less space doesn’t mean that you have to go without, say experts. “A few simple adjustments can help you maintain your comfort in a small home,” says Robin Wilson, celebrity interior designer with expertise in creating healthy spaces. There are plenty of ways to “open up” your living spaces to create more room.

THE LIVING ROOM

Choose furniture for a small living room that is appropriate for the space. For example, avoid sofas with skirts and select couches which are raised off the floor to create a more open look. A large, strategically placed mirror can also help create the illusion that your living room is actually much larger than it is. The same goes for lack of clutter. Be sure to keep a small space organized with a daily once-over.

STORAGE

Living simply can go a long way toward making your home feel larger. Every season, go through your closet and toss aside items that are worn out, no longer fit, or are out of style. Use creative storage solutions to make more space. For example, an ottoman that doubles as a trunk is a great place to store old photos and keepsakes. A bike rack that mounts to the wall can clear valuable floor space in your foyer.

THE KITCHEN

The kitchen is often the heart of the home, particularly if you like entertaining or love to cook. Unfortunately, kitchens can get overcrowded quickly by excessive gadgetry. “If counter space is at a premium, consider highly functional appliances that have multiple uses,” says Wilson. For example, the Panasonic Genius NN-SD681S microwave is equipped with inverter technology, which gives this kitchen essential the ability to function like an oven and ensures every dish is cooked evenly throughout. Though it is compact in size, it still maintains a spacious interior and comes with an optional trim kit that easily converts this microwave to a builtin, freeing up counter space while giving a stylish accent to cabinetry. More information can be found at www. Panasonic.com.

THE BATHROOM

Give the illusion of space by decorating with pale or pastel colors on the walls and floor. Avoid using bolder colors, except on towels and ornamental pieces

THROUGHOUT THE HOME

Ensure that you have lighting at floor, table and eye level to help limit shadows. Another trick is to use a tall lamp to draw eyes upwards and add height to the room. (STATEPOINT)

Make home projects

A FAMILY AFFAIR

Tackling home improvement projects with kids in tow can be challenging. But if kids are old enough, moms and dads can enlist their youngsters’ help when working on projects around the house. Not only can adults keep closer tabs on kids’ activities, but involving kids in home projects also lets parents instill important and practical lessons at the same time. When asked to pitch in on home projects, young kids may feel proud they can lend a hand with such a “grown-up” task. With the right instruction, children of all ages can get involved with fix-up projects and learn new skills in the process. Include children from the start When beginning a project, parents can make their kids a part of the design and planning process, welcoming the input of younger members of the family, especially if renovations will impact spaces they use directly. Draft a list of supplies and ask questions of the kids regarding what supplies they think will have to go into completing the project. Shop as a family Although it may slow you down, take children along to the home improvement store so you can purchase supplies together. Let youngsters help you as you choose materials for the project. This way they can see how the raw materials will turn into the finished renovation. Emphasize safety

Children should understand that tools serve a distinct purpose and that they are not toys. Identify and explain the dangerous pieces of equipment and instruct children that they should not touch or turn on tools without an adult nearby. Go over the proper ways to handle the tools and explain the purposes of each device. Make sure everyone is wearing safety equipment, including eye protection, gloves and ear protection, while handing the tools. Demonstrate and then let kids try Children will not have the skills to perform more intricate tasks, but older kids can hammer some nails, mix paint or even cut wood with supervision. Assign tasks based on the child’s age. For example, a preteen may be able to saw wood, while a kindergartener can hand over nails and tools. Illustrate the correct way to get things done and then have children mirror your actions. Attempt an easy project first Painting a room, building a planter box, or another less complicated project can help parents gauge their kids’ abilities. Involving children in home improvement projects can teach then new skills, give them a greater appreciation of the work that goes into maintaining a house, instill a sense of pride in youngsters, and provide a great chance for kids and their parents to spend quality together.

Replace your garage door If you’re like most people, you probably don’t think much about your garage door or the impact it has on how your home looks and feels. Yet the garage door is a huge surface area that directly affects your home’s curb appeal and its ability to retain heat in the winter. A great deal of warm air can escape a home through an uninsulated garage door. What’s more, when the garage gets cold, it can affect the comfort of rooms around and above it. Have a game room over the garage that’s chilly in winter? The garage door could be to blame. Replacing an old, uninsulated garage door with a new insulated model can improve heat retention. KITCHEN & BATH

Tips for improving your

KITCHEN for entertaining If your home is the one your family and friends gravitate to for parties and seasonal celebrations, you need to make sure it can handle all that attention. Upgrading your kitchen can be one of the most rewarding home improvement projects for those who entertain frequently. Here are a few upgrades that can improve your kitchen’s visual appeal and utility for better entertaining.

Open and shut Is your kitchen storage bursting at the seams? Do those cabinets that once looked so great now seem tired? Today’s top kitchens employ a combination of open shelving and closed cabinetry to deliver stunning looks and top functionality. Install open shelving for things you use the most and for visually appealing dishes and glasses. It’s easy for you to grab what you need and for guests to know where to turn for an extra plate or tumbler. And open shelves are terrific for showcasing that favorite set of after-dinner glassware or that sleek new cappuccino maker. But a well-designed kitchen also needs large cabinets to hide clutter and clunky appliances that

consume precious counter space.

Upgrade your range Upgrading your range is a simple way to take entertaining to the next level. And these days, designs that combine sleek industrial lines with classic retro touches are all the rage. But form needs to be matched by flexible function. Look for a range that comes in dual fuel, gas or electric, with choice of a single or double oven, such as the 36-inch professional style ranges from Verona, a luxury Italian brand from EuroChef USA. Their new Classic Collection line comes in three colors, including stainless steel, matte black and gloss red, with a color-matched control panel, featuring teardrop control knobs, beveled doors, rounded handles and elegant plinth legs. More information is available at veronaappliances.com/veronaclassic. No matter what range you choose, opt for one with high BTU sealed burners and easy glide oven racks for easy access to your meals. And be sure to look for such advanced features as an infrared broiler and/or convection setting so you can cook quickly and precisely.

FILE PHOTO Fall Home Improvement

Your range should be the centerpiece of your kitchen, in terms of design and function.

Proper prep and cleanup Double-basin sinks and dual drawer dishwashers don’t just look luxurious, they help speed prep work and cleanup. If you have the space, nothing beats a tandem sink where you can use one basin for preparing

the next course and the other for dirty dishes. That second sink is also great for a helpful friend to start cleanup. Dual drawer dishwashers can help you complete post-meal chores faster. You can have one load of dirty dishes in progress

while you enjoy dessert, and be able to fill up a second drawer with cutlery, coffee cups and dessert plates after the meal. The key to upgrading your kitchen is to streamline it to make your life easier as host. (STATEPOINT)

Three smart, sensational ways to customize your shower experience Any real estate agent will tell you great bathrooms help sell homes. But what if you’re not planning to sell any time soon and still want to have a memorable, attention-grabbing room? Start by upgrading your shower; it’s the heart of creating an amazing bathroom. A relaxing shower at the end of a tough day is one of the fastest, most effective ways to unwind. And an invigorating shower in the morning can set the stage for a positive day. No other element in the bathroom provides a better chance to pamper yourself with luxury, while still serving a vital, practical purpose. Creating a custom shower experience – tailored to your tastes and needs – doesn’t have to be as pricey as you think. Showers are actually among the least costly parts of the bath to upgrade. Nor does it have to involve extensive renovation. A few simple changes can help you achieve a top-notch shower experience without taking a bath on costs. Multi-spray, single-spray, rainfall, shower arms and hand showers can work together in virtually any combination you choose. FILE PHOTO Fall Home Improvement

The power of the showerhead The showerhead is, of course, the heart of the shower. Simply replacing a utilitarian showerhead with one that features multiple settings can be a major step up, but why stop there? Manufacturers like Danze, Inc. offer an array of showerheads and accessories that make changing a showerhead the quickest (and possibly easiest) way to transform your shower experience. Showerheads can be mounted on the wall or ceiling, depending on the model you choose, and many Danze showerheads feature air injection technology that provides a powerful spray even when water pressure is low (or strictly regulated). Various models are water efficient, so while you’re doing something for yourself, you’re also helping the environment by conserving water. Most showerhead changes can operate off existing plumbing, but consult a plumbing professional when you feel a bit in over your DIY head. Visit www.danze.com to learn more.

MODERN design tips to set your home apart

If it’s time for a remodel – or even just a refresh of your home’s dated décor – it may be time to think modern. Innovations in technology and design can offer your home efficiency, luxury and sophistication, and even improve your home’s resale value. Here are a few trends to consider. New kitchen Whatever purpose your kitchen serves, be it simply a workplace for meal prep or the hub of the home, you can give the room a clean modern look while retaining its functionality and aesthetic appeal. Stainless steel appliances and hardware coupled with butcher block countertops harmonize nicely and are beautiful design elements that lend themselves to both modern form and function. Modern design is all about streamlined simplicity, so use this opportunity to rid your kitchen of clunky, clutter-causing gadgets you don’t use – especially those that don’t match your updated look. The fireplace The hearth has been, and continues to be, the heart of the home. While fireplaces may no longer serve as the primary way people heat their homes, they continue to be a focal point, both aesthetically and as a gathering place for family and friends, even in spaces characterized by modern design. New gas fireplace designs are replacing logs with materials like crushed glass, and metallic fronts. For a high-end look, the MEZZO unit features a modern, see-through front. Also consider incorporating a fireplace into your kitchen, bathroom, master bedroom

New gas fireplace designs are focusing on clean lines, sometimes replacing logs with materials like crushed glass, and the traditional masonry look with metallic fronts.

or anywhere you want to create ambiance with a stunning focal point. Check out options specifically designed to fit smaller rooms or unique spaces – like the REVO, which is only 7-inches deep and features venting technology that opens up opportunities for installation in places and homes previously thought impossible. From a resale perspective, a fireplace adds $3,600 on average to the value of a home, and

creates a design focal point that sets it apart from the rest of the inventory on the market. Hidden storage For a modern look, the more devoid your space is of clutter, the better. And this goal in minimalism is informing many homeowners’ design decisions. Look for spaces that can serve as hidden, unique storage solutions, like carve outs or drawers that extend from under

• SHOWER Continued from Page 9 Showering with light and sound Light and music have a powerful effect on mood, so it makes sense to incorporate their emotional impact into your shower experience. Shower lighting now goes way beyond a single recessed canister light set in the ceiling above the shower. Dimmable lighting allows you to control the amount of light stimulation – from low and relaxing to bright and invigorating. Ceiling-mounted chromatherapy lights use the color spectrum to further enhance mood in your shower. Cables of LED lights at the top or bottom of a shower enclosure can accent the space and provide gentle, low-level light. Sconces and overhead lighting can help fully illuminate the shower when needed. Waterproof radios first introduced Americans to the idea of musical accompaniment to their shower experience. Now it’s possible to plug your iPod into your home’s audio system and stream your favorite music directly into the bathroom. If your home’s not that high-tech, you can still listen to your tunes in the shower

by simply adding portable and waterproof speakers in the bathroom. These Bluetooth enabled speakers let you stream the music directly into the shower. The perfect resting spots Seating in the shower is no longer just for older folks. Stylish, portable shower seats now make it possible to rest while you’re relaxing in the shower. You can also opt for a wall-mounted seat that folds flat to the wall when not in use. Short on space in the shower? Opt for a corner seat – you can find removable corner stools or wallmounted options. Consider adding a footrest to make shaving easier. Again, options range from wall-mounted designs that match your shower’s existing hardware, to portable options that can be removed and tucked away when not in use. The shower isn’t just a place Americans go to get clean, it’s an important part of your home that can directly impact your mood and sense of wellbeing. (BPT)

LAWN & GARDEN

Why you should aerate your lawn this fall Fall is a great time to aerate the lawn. Whether you do it yourself or hire a lawn care professional to do it for you, aeration at least once per year provides a number of benefits to your lawn, say experts. The main benefit is to relieve compaction and increase pore space, which promotes gas exchange and microbial activity in the soil and creates a better, more supportive environment for lawn health and vitality. Aeration also promotes better soil drainage, which helps keep disease at bay and allows more water to percolate into the soil from rain or irrigation, meaning less runoff and more water getting where it needs to go. “Ideal aeration timing depends on turf type and geography,” says Lloyd Von Scheliha of Exmark Manufacturing, a manufacturer of turf care equipment. “But annual aeration provides valuable agronomic benefits to virtually any turfgrass.” With that in mind, here are some tips from the experts at Exmark to get the most benefits from aeration: Timing Ideally, aeration should take place during times of active growth to help with recovery. Avoid aeration during times of heat stress or times preceding dormancy. It’s typically best to aerate cool season grasses in the spring or fall, while with warm season grasses, it’s best to aerate in late spring or early fall. Follow-up After aeration, it’s a good idea to water the lawn, as well as a good time to apply fertilizer or overseed if needed. Be careful not to apply a pre-emergent if you plan to overseed, however, as it will prevent the new seed from growing. Don’t let this important, but often-overlooked lawn care task escape your attention this season. At the ideal time for your lawn, either take it upon yourself or hire a professional to give your grass a better chance at thriving. (STATEPOINT)

Fall pruning can stimulate growth in plants preparing for winter dormancy, threatening their ability to return next spring and summer.

PRUNE your plants properly

BEFORE WINTER As the leaves fall off the trees and greenery thins out for the season, exposing branches and undergrowth along the way, homeowners may be tempted to prune their trees and shrubs. But while autumn pruning may seem like a good idea, many gardening experts say it is often best for homeowners to wait until winter or early spring before pruning. Although pruning does thin out branches and tame spent blooms, which can be eyesores, pruning also stimulates new growth. Pruning in the autumn, when plants are naturally preparing to go dormant, can weaken the plants considerably. This can compromise their chances of surviving into the next growing season. Fall temperatures also can be deceiving. While it may be warm during the day when the sun is shining, temperatures can quickly drop overnight. Pruning during the warmth of day, when the sap has risen in the plants, may deplete energy from the plant. When the mercury drops at night, the plant can suffer. If you must spend time in the yard in the fall, tend to the leaves and debris that have already fallen to the ground rather than focusing energy on fall pruning. If you have been diligent during the spring and summer, your shrubs and other plants likely won’t need pruning at this time of year. Wait until winter before taking out the shears. At this point, the woody parts of many plants are dormant and will not be harmed or primed to grow by the pruning. Chances are you won’t prune too much as well, as chilly temperatures will keep you

from spending too much time outdoors. When it’s time to prune, consider these other pointers. Keep tools clean and in good working order You risk injury if your tools are dull and in poor shape overall. Spend time sharpening pruners and keep manual tools oiled and clean. Debris can lodge itself in clippers, making it more difficult to open and shut them. Wash and dry tools after use, especially when dealing with diseased plants. Otherwise you risk spreading disease to healthy plants. Cut back stems completely It’s usually a good idea to prune branches back to the main stem. Leaving a portion sticking out can catch on people or animals and produce a gathering spot for bacteria and insects. Take out thinner, smaller shoots first before moving on to any dead or dying branches. Prune dry branches Do not prune when plants are wet. Pruning damp plants encourages the growth of microbes that can infiltrate the plant. This is not as significant a problem in the winter, when microbes have already been killed. Ask an expert If you are unsure of how and when to prune particular plants, consult with an expert at a nursery or wherever you buy your plants.

FALL HOME IMPROVEMENT

Cleaning gutters in the fall can prevent roof damage resulting from winter rains and snowfall. FILE PHOTO Fall Home Improvement

WINTERIZE

to safeguard your home from harsh weather Autumn is a beautiful time of year marked by welcoming cooler temperatures and the natural beauty of leaves changing colors. Autumn also has a tendency to fly by, as if the powerful weather of winter simply cannot wait to make its presence felt. With such a seemingly short time between the end of summer and the dawn of winter, homeowners know they don’t have too many weekends in between to prepare their homes for the potentially harsh months ahead. But such preparation, often referred to as “winterizing,” can make a home more comfortable when the mercury dips below freezing, while saving homeowners substantial amounts of money along the way.

gutters are not cleared out before the first winter storm, the results can be costly and even catastrophic. Winter rain and snowfall needs a place to go upon hitting your roof, and gutters facilitate the travel of such precipitation from your roof into street-level drainage systems. If gutters are backed up with leaves and other debris, then ice dams may form, forcing water to seep in through the roof. That damage can be costly and can even cause the roof to collapse inward in areas with heavy snowfall. Clean gutters throughout the fall, especially if your property has many trees, and be sure to check gutters one last time before the arrival of winter.

Clean the gutters Leaves falling in fall can be a beautiful sight to behold, but many of those leaves are likely finding their way into your gutters, where they can lodge and cause a host of problems down the road. If the leaves and additional debris, such as twigs and dirt, that pile up in your

Tend to your attic Homeowners who have attics in their homes might want to add some extra insulation up there, especially those who recall feeling cold inside their homes last winter, which is often a telltale sign of improper insulation in a home. A good rule of thumb when determining

if your attic needs more insulation is to look for the ceiling joists. If you can see the joists, then you need more insulation. Address leaky windows and doors Sometimes attic insulation is not the culprit when it comes to a cold home. Oftentimes, leaky windows and doors are the real bad guys in a drafty home. Fall is a great time to inspect for leaky windows and doors, as the wind outside can serve as your partner. When the wind outside is blowing, take a tour of your home’s windows and doorways, standing next to them to determine if there any holes or leaks that are letting outdoor air inside. If you notice any leaks beneath exterior doors, install some door sweeps to keep outdoor air where it belongs. Leaks around windows can be snuffed out with caulk or weather stripping. Test the furnace Homeowners typically do not devote much thought to their furnaces in spring, summer and fall. But with winter on the horizon, fall is the time to test the furnace to

make sure it’s ready for the months ahead. Expect a somewhat foul yet brief odor to appear when starting the furnace. That odor should dissipate shortly, but if it does not go away, then your furnace is likely in need of repair. But even if the smell does not stick around, you might want to have the furnace cleaned by a professional anyway. Such cleanings ensure the furnace works efficiently throughout the winter. Clean the garage You might not mind parking in the driveway during the warmer months of the year, but why subject your vehicles to harsh winter weather if you don’t have to? Clean the garage in the fall so you have an indoor parking spot throughout the winter season. Protecting your car from the elements can add years to its life and also saves you the trouble of digging your car out of the snow. Fall is a time of year for homeowners to spend a weekend or two preparing their homes for the often harsh weather that awaits when winter arrives.

SMART HOUSE: Five ideas to raise your home’s IQ

Remember the first time you met that “out of this world” family, the Jetsons? Fastforward to today, and it suddenly isn’t all that far-fetched. While we may not have flying cars or robot maids just yet, the idea of a “smart home” is real. These five upgrades can go a long way to boost the intelligence of your house. High-tech hub The kitchen is the hub of the home and it sees much more than just meal prep and dinnertime. From homework to casual conversation, your family expects more from this already hard-working space. In fact, the kitchen is the number one room where homeowners would like to incorporate technology, according to a recent research study by Moen. • One-third of homeowners charge devices in the kitchen, according to the Moen study. You can make this task simpler and cord-free with new countertops, such as the Corian line from DuPont, which features wireless chargers seamlessly embedded into its surface. Or install a docking and charging station with a built-in USB power strip to maximize the number of devices you can charge at once. • A hands-free faucet is one for your wish list for good reason. For the convenience of a faucet that senses what you’re trying to accomplish, and with a wave of your hand immediately responds to your needs, check out the slim and sleek new STo pulldown kitchen faucet from Moen with MotionSense.

In addition to the traditional handle, you can activate the faucet by waving your hand over it to turn it on and off, or by placing your hands or an object under its spout. For more information, visit moen.com/motionsense. Tech-savvy details • Worried about what your appliances are up to when you’re gone? Whirlpool Smart Appliances with 6th Sense Live technology now allows consumers to access appliances remotely. You can manage refrigerator temperature or lock the dishwasher control console and see when the washer cycle is complete, all from a connected application on a smart device. • Long gone are the days of shuttling a portable stereo from room to room. A smart system of HiFi wireless speakers and audio components can unite a digital music collection. With a Sonos speaker, for example, you can control what’s streaming from any device, and the music can be heard in any room. • You can transform the mood of a room at the touch of a button with new smart LED light bulbs that allow you to change the color or brightness any time, even from your smartphone. Studies show that light can affect mood, productivity and eyestrain. By optimizing lighting for each activity, you can live better and enjoy your home more. Being among the first to embrace new technologies in your home can make it the smartest in the neighborhood.

How to conduct a DIY home energy audit This fall, why not consider making needed improvements in your home to help increase energy efficiency and save big in the long run? Here is a short checklist for a DIY home energy audit.

SEAL AIR LEAKS According to the U.S. Department of Energy, sealing air leaks around the house can save up to 30 percent of energy costs annually. To find leaks, conduct a thorough visual inspection for gaps and cracks by baseboards, where the walls and ceiling meet, around door frames, and near cable and phone line wall plates. Spot a gap? Caulk it. Use painter’s tape for a cleaner job. Hold the caulking gun at an angle for best results, and apply in a continuous stream. Improve insulation around windows and doors with weather-stripping.

Measure the gap you need to fill to identify the width of weather-stripping needed and determine whether you should apply it from the inside or outside. Before starting, read the package instructions to ensure you’re using the right materials. Cut to size and install. Lastly, check if your fireplace flue is open. If so, close it when not in use for additional savings.

MAKE SMART UPGRADES One quick way to check your windows for inefficiencies is to look for condensation, frost and other moisture. The Department of Energy also recommends closing your windows on a dollar bill. If you can easily pull the bill out, the window might be losing substantial energy and may require repair or replacement. Additionally, ENERGY STAR reports

that homeowners who choose windows that have earned the ENERGY STAR save an average $101-$538 a year when replacing single-pane windows. If it’s time for an upgrade, look for ENERGY STAR qualified windows that offer innovative technologies and improve energy efficiency. Exterior remodeling companies like Window World, an ENERGY STAR partner, offer more high-performance options featuring technologies like a Warm-Edge Spacer System, which blocks escaping heat between glass layers. Additionally, the company sells windows made with high-performance Low Emissivity Glass, featuring a microscopic silver coating that actively blocks heat gain during the summer and heat loss during the winter. To further improve efficiency, Window World’s replacement windows also contain Argon gas between their glass layers.

Because Argon is denser than air, it acts as an ideal insulator. For information about innovative and cost-saving energy efficiency options, visit www.WindowWorld.com.

CHANGE BEHAVIOR Do an audit of not only your home’s features, but of the occupants as well. Are lights left on in empty rooms? Is the television on when no one is watching it? From switching to cold water laundry cycles to taking advantage of sunlight for warmth and light – modifications of energy and cost-saving resources don’t need to be a sacrifice. To save energy, improve the comfort of your home and do your part to be more environmentally conscientious, conduct a do-it-yourself energy audit. You’ll likely discover many areas in your home that should be improved. (STATEPOINT)

If you have hard water, there are significant benefits to having a traditional salt-based water softener in your home. Use a home water testing kit to test for water hardness or have a water treatment professional do the testing.

ousehold bacteria can be a serious issue affecting your health. In fact, the very steps we take to eliminate harmful bacteria may be spreading it. Everyone washes their fresh fruits and vegetables, but the water in your pipes may contain even more bacteria, especially if you have hard water. The problem isn’t only in the kitchen. When you take a hot shower, the steam you are inhaling can also contain the same microbial contamination that is in the rest of your plumbing, exposing you to pathogenic bacteria such as Legionella, which can cause Legionnaire’s disease. The piping used in home plumbing, whether it is copper or PVC, has very smooth interior surfaces which don’t permit bacteria to settle and grow. However, hard water, which contains high levels of calcium and magnesium, results in scale formation on the interior surfaces of those pipes, which provides a perfect home for bacteria. Researchers at the School of Sustainable Engineering at Arizona State University found that bacteria may grow at the same rate in pipes filled with both hard and soft scale. This is important new information as some forms of water conditioners produce this soft scale. The only solution to this problem is to remove the scaling in the pipes entirely, which only a traditional salt-based water softener can do. This type of water softener works by running the incoming hard water through a resin filter that traps the calcium and magnesium in the water, as well as any iron, manganese or radium ions, and replaces them with sodium ions. Bacterial growth in plumbing is well documented and can cause serious hygienic problems in water systems, especially in hospital buildings and hotels. Factors like water flow and plumbing materials influence the growth rate of bacteria, but once it’s in your pipes, it’s distributed throughout your home each time you turn on the faucet. The fact is that salt not only helps remove and prevent the hard water scaling in home plumbing, it is also a natural antibiotic. Throughout history, people have used salt as a vital food preservative to keep bacteria from growing on cured meats and cheeses. New research form the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine shows that salt acts as an antibiotic in the body as well. In the case of a skin infection, the body naturally moves more salt to that spot to fight the infection. The extra salt also helps the body’s defensive systems more effectively fight infection. For more information on water softening and salt health visit www.saltinstitute.org. (BPT)

Certain home appliances and features have a reputation for being energy and money wasters; everyone knows the air conditioner draws more electricity and old, leaky windows boost utility bills. But are you aware of the room in your home that uses - and wastes - the most water? Americans use more water in the bathroom than any other room of the house, according to the Environmental Protection Agency. The average family of four uses about 400 gallons per day, and most of it goes down the drain in showers, toilets and sinks. All that water use costs about $1,100 per year, the EPA says. With warm weather arriving and dry conditions occurring across the country, conserving water not only saves you money, it can help preserve the water supply, too. State water managers are predicting shortages in 40 states over the next 10 years, according to a 2013 report by the United States Government Accountability Office. It’s very likely Californians won’t be the only Americans facing water restrictions in the coming years. This summer, why not take steps to reduce the amount of water your family uses in the bathroom – and save yourself some money at the same time? These tactics can help:

Choose high-efficiency fixtures Toilets account for nearly 27 percent of a household’s overall water use, the shower nearly 17 percent and faucets nearly 16 percent, the EPA says. Switching to WaterSense-labeled fixtures can reduce the amount of water you use in the bathroom and save you $350 per year, according to EPA calculations. Switching to a high-efficiency toilet can have a significant impact. If your toilet is older, it may be using as much as 3.5 to 7 gallons of water per flush. Standard modern toilets use between 1.5 to 2 gallons per flush, but high-efficiency toilets use much less. For example, the dual-flush Sanicompact and Sanistar by Saniflo use as little as 1 gallon per flush to remove liquid waste, and just 1.28 gallons for solids. What to know before upgrading

your home’s HVAC SYSTEM

Not all home upgrades require a ton of research. But for more complicated repairs and replacements, being informed can help you make better decisions. For example, replacing your home’s HVAC system is one thing you want to get right, as a good decision can benefit both your comfort and pocketbook for years to come. “Before talking to a contractor, homeowners should be prepared with questions,” Karl Zellmer, VP of Air Conditioning at Emerson Climate Technologies, said. According to Zellmer, here are some important factors to consider and questions to discuss with your contractor: • What size or capacity system is right for my home? • What is the expected life span of my current system? • How much should I plan to pay for a new system if mine has to be replaced? • How much will my monthly energy bill be reduced with a new system? Are there ways to reduce it even more? • Will the new system reliably produce the desired air temperature EMERSON CLIMATE TECHNOLOGIES Fall Home Improvement and humidity levels evenly When speaking to an HVAC contractor, be prepared to ask the right questions. If it’s time to throughout my home? replace the system, it can save money in the long run. • What maintenance will

the new system require? Will it automatically notify me when it needs servicing or repair? • What are the contractor’s qualifications? Can they provide referrals from previous customers? • Is my system environmentallyfriendly? Are there any government and utility rebates available for buying certain “high efficiency” equipment? • Am I going to be adequately covered by a warranty and how long will I be covered? • Am I purchasing the most upto-date technology available? For example, will I be able to remotely monitor and control my home’s climate via the internet or a mobile device? To view the results from recent homeowner research, and to learn more about what type of system might be best for your home, free resources are available at www. ac-heatingconnect.com. If you own an older, problem prone system, it might be time to skip the repairs and opt for a replacement instead. No matter your priorities, long-term reliability, modest operating costs and great year-round performance are key features to seek in your next HVAC system. (STATEPOINT)

How to improve indoor air quality in your home

Clean the floors regularly Dirty floors take their toll on a home’s indoor air quality. Dust that’s allowed to settle on floors may contain harmful chemicals and allergens that can lead to respiratory problems and additional uncomfortable health conditions. Clean your floors at least once per week

during the winter months, ideally with a vacuum that’s equipped with a HEPA filter. The HEPA filter is important because it can prevent dust and dirt from being blown back out of the vacuum in the exhaust. After you have vacuumed, mop the floors as well, as even the most effective vacuums leave potentially harmful dust particles behind. A once-over with a mop and some hot water can remove any lingering dust left behind by the vacuum. Place a floor mat near every entrance Winter is a messy season, and it’s easy to bring in the great outdoors when you enter your home during cold weather seasons. Dirt that sticks to your shoes may contain potentially harmful chemicals, so place a floor mat near any door where people routinely enter your home and politely ask that all who enter wipe off and remove their shoes before moving about the house.

leaky plumbing fixtures to prevent mold growth and making sure your clothes dryer is vented to the outside of your home. Choose naturally scented laundry products Everyone wants their freshly cleaned clothes to smell good, but the price you pay when using laundry products that employ synthetic fragrances may be far more steep than you realize. Such synthetic fragrances emit dozens of chemicals into the air, so choose naturally scented detergents, fabric softeners and dryer sheets when possible.

Avoid plug-in air fresheners Unless otherwise noted on the packaging, plug-in air fresheners likely contain volatile organic compounds, or VOCs, which contain a variety of chemicals that can negatively impact both short- and long-term health. With winter on the horizon, homeowners who live in locales with harsh winters are preparing their homes for a season spent largely indoors. Unlike the other seasons of the year, when homeowners can comfortably air out their homes by opening windows, winter offers no such opportunities to let nature improve indoor air quality. Such a reality can make a home uncomfortable as winter drags on. But that discomfort pales in comparison to the health risks presented by poor indoor air quality. Radon, volatile chemicals from fragrances used in conventional cleaners and lead from house dust are just a few of the many sources of indoor air pollution commonly found in homes, and these pollutants can be especially harmful in winter, when many people spend more time indoors thanks to harsh weather. But while you might not be able to change the weather so you can open windows in the wintertime, you can take steps to improve indoor air quality in your home.

Connected home technology can help homeowners stay safe and secure. FILE PHOTO Fall Home Improvement

IN THE CONNECTED HOME

Homeowners can stay safe and secure with connected home technology. Connected home technology offers a variety of benefits, especially when installed in a space such as the garage, which homeowners use almost every day. A recent study by iControl Networks found that 90 percent of homeowners view personal and family security as one of the most important reasons for installing a connected home system. If you’re looking to integrate connected home devices into your house, and specifically the garage, keep these tips in mind for added safety, security and convenience. 1. As you examine potential devices, keep an eye out for products that improve home accessibility and convenience. Seventy percent of homeowners use the garage as the main point of entry to and from the house, and with

LiftMaster’s MyQ technology, they can open, close and control their garage door opener anytime, from anywhere. Plus, with MyQ, homeowners have the added convenience of controlling home, garden or garage lighting systems all from the MyQ app, and no longer have to worry about stepping into an unlit house. 2. When searching for the best connected home device, be sure to choose one that can work with multiple operating systems and devices. A device that works with both Apple and Android systems, gives you greater flexibility when integrating additional devices and apps in and around your connected home. 3. The garage door can often be the heaviest moving object in the house, and it’s very important to make sure it operates safely. Look for connected devices integrated with signaling capabilities – either visual or audio warnings – to ensure those nearby are aware when a garage door

is closing or opening. 4. Finally, think about apps and devices that can help increase your home’s security. Chances are, you already get alerts on your phone for a variety of reasons. Now you can receive an alert on that same device when the garage door is left open. MyQ technology sends homeowners text alerts on the status of their garage door for added security and peace of mind. “You can check if your garage door is secure anytime, from anywhere, whether you’re at work, running errands, or on vacation,” said Juan Lopez, director of marketing, Connectivity and Controls at LiftMaster. With these helpful tips, homeowners can take the first steps to making their home a safe and secure connected home.

• WATERContinued from Page 21 or adding a new one in a basement, garage or attic, the up-flush technology of the Saniflo products delivers an additional bonus – lower installation costs. Installing a macerating toilet with above-floor plumbing eliminates costs like breaking through and repairing concrete for basement installations, or cutting through drywall and installing ventilation in other areas of the home. Both the Saniflo high-efficiency toilets are designed to be aesthetically pleasing, and hide the macerating mechanism within the base of the toilet. You can also curb water consumption

in the shower by switching to WaterSenselabeled products. EPA says standard showerheads use 2.5 gallons per minute, and the Alliance for Water Efficiency says the average American spends 8.2 minutes under the spray every time he or she showers. That means the average person uses a whopping 20 gallons of water in a single shower. A WaterSense showerhead can cut your family’s bathroom water consumption by 2,900 gallons per year, the EPA says. Adopt water-saving habits Even if you have zero budget to update your bathroom with water-efficient fixtures,

you can still reduce your water consumption simply by making some lifestyle changes: • Check existing fixtures for leaks, which are significant bathroom water wasters. Repair leaky faucets, dripping showerheads and toilets that run constantly. • Make a bath an occasional treat, rather than a weekly or even daily cleansing ritual. A bath uses far more water than a five- to eight-minute shower. • Take shorter showers. Five minutes should be enough time to get the job done for most people, and trimming your shower time by just three minutes could save 7.5 gallons of water per shower.

• If you aren’t able to replace your older toilet with a high-efficiency model, try placing a brick in the tank to displace water. The tank will fill with less water and you’ll use less per flush. • If you can’t replace an older faucet, see if your model can be fitted with a new aerator that will reduce water flow. • When brushing your teeth, turn the faucet off after you’ve dampened your toothbrush, and keep it off while you’re brushing. Fill a glass with water and use that to rinse your mouth, rather than taking water directly from the faucet.

Minimizing the mess How to keep a clean home with kids

No doubt about it, Americans like their “stuff.” We like to accumulate and surround ourselves with material things. The late George Carlin summed it up when he quipped, “A house is just a place to keep your stuff while you go out and get more stuff.” The problem is that stuff creates a mess, and most people also like to be neat and organized. Unfortunately, the two concepts do not necessarily align, which is why companies like The Container Store boast close to billion-dollar bottom lines. And when you have kids? Fugehdaboutit. The potential for messiness multiplies tenfold. For those wannabe organized families who would like to declutter (or at least keep the detritus at bay), look no further than the tips below:

FIVE SIMPLE DESIGN TRICKS to revamp your home Whether you’ve just moved into a home or you’ve lived there for years, it might be time for a design tune-up. While many may think tackling their home décor takes a bundle of time, money and expertise, it doesn’t have to be so frightening. You don’t need to spend a fortune or go to design school to breathe a little life into your home. “It’s all about simplicity,” says Susan Yoder, interior design expert for Clayton Homes. “A little goes a long way when it comes to home décor and living spaces. Only a few simple changes can make a big difference and allow you to create a room you’ll be itching to show off to friends and family.” Yoder offers a few of her design tips that will help any homeowner revamp their space: POPS OF COLOR “Nothing livens up a room like a bright pop of color,” Yoder says. If you have neutral-toned furniture, try sprucing up the room with lamps, curtains and accessories in bold hues. If you’re up for a painting challenge, an accent wall is a great way to incorporate color into a space. Choose your favorite color from a throw pillow or wall-art piece in the room to pull the look together. VARYING TEXTURES Try varying the fabric types on your sofa and curtains. Add in some metal or wooden accents to draw the eye around the room. You can even play with lighting to reflect off certain objects and create visual interest.

ANTIQUE FEATURE Choose an antique or unique piece of décor to be the inspiration for the room. This could be a rug, lamp, chair or even a chandelier – anything that gets you energized and motivated. Get creative and run with the theme it creates. Or if your style is more on the modern side, an antique object will stand out among your contemporary décor. SYMMETRICAL YET FUNCTIONAL The furniture collection in a room should form a restful, symmetrical layout. It’s all about balance. There should be between three and 10-feet between each seat. Additionally, instead of pushing each piece up against the wall to create more space, give your furniture a bit of breathing room a few inches from the wall. This makes the room appear open and airy. CLUTTER-FREE ORGANIZATION Getting rid of clutter is a grand challenge for most homeowners. When you decide to take on the mess, drawers and cabinets are your best friends. Take some time to go through your belongings and decide what to keep, donate or throw away. Store any leftover items that can cause clutter in an organized, out-of-sight area. Use these tips to revitalize your space and you’ll be ready to confidently host gatherings and enjoy your home instead of shying away from your living space.

(BPT)

Buy bins These plastic tubs can be a godsend for parents whose kids either refuse to throw (or give) anything away, or who want to try and teach their kids to organize their things at an early age. It keeps the mess to a minimum and makes cleaning simple for both parents and children. Cue the cubbies These three-drawer organizers can be stored in the closet, don’t take up much room and allow kids to store odds and ends that might otherwise be everywhere but their bedroom. Have an inbox A parent of any school-age child knows the amount of paperwork that comes home is obscene and overwhelming. To that end, having one place for all incoming papers is paramount. Use hangers and hooks These minimally priced inventions that hang on the backs of doors helps keep towels, scarves, coats and other items off the floor. Similarly, a shoe rack that hangs in the closet can also be a great organization tool for little ones. And for the grown-up smokeless tobacco users, consider a portable spittoon. Companies like FLASR, creators of smokeless tobacco accessory products, can help. For more information, visit www.flasr.com. (NEWSUSA)

Quick, inexpensive ways to give your home a fall facelift A seasonal home makeover doesn’t need to cost a fortune or be difficult to execute. Quick, easy and innovative ideas can give your home the fall flair needed to celebrate the season. “Seasonal décor updates should jive with your home’s style, while also adding something extra to the mix,” says Eric Cohler, who has been listed as a top international designer by House Beautiful and Elle Décor magazines. “Keep it easy though, so that when the season is over, you won’t end up with a lack of motivation to refresh and a space that feels passé.” To add autumn elements to your home without completely revamping your interior, consider these ideas: Rotating gallery A digital photo display is the easiest way to showcase seasonally suitable photos of friends and family. In fall, that means Halloween portraits, autumn picnics, trips to the pumpkin patch, and back-to-school photos. Consider rotating the artwork displayed in your home to highlight seasonal colors. Whether you want to get spooky for Halloween or focus on fall’s natural hues, this task won’t take long to do and will

greatly impact the look and feel of each room. Pops of color “With relatively little effort, you can add bright, bold colors to your home by swapping out the knobs and handles on your cabinets, credenzas and other furniture,” says Cohler. Seasonal sets of cabinet hardware can keep the look fresh in your home. All you need is a screwdriver and a few hours. A free web-based application, Splash by Amerock, offers a new interactive design and shopping experience by allowing you to truly customize hardware for cabinets and furniture. The interactive site and first of its kind product line allows you to test various colors and shapes of cabinetry hardware and view the different looks on different style and color cabinets. From kitchens to bathrooms to bedrooms and living areas, you can make your rooms pop with bold colors. Think orange, purple and black for Halloween flair, or greens, reds and browns for a natural effect. Hardware is easy to swap out and you can give your home a fun, fresh fall makeover inexpensively and without

much hassle. To check out 20 unique color options, visit www.Amerock.com. Curtains Another easy way to make a quick lookand-feel change to a room is by swapping out curtains. It’s a great way to customize a space to better fit the mood of the season. What’s more – a quarterly rotation of window treatments presents a much-needed

opportunity for a good cleaning. Be sure to store your freshly laundered linens in a sealed bag so they don’t collect dust. When they make their appearance the following year, they will be vibrant and fresh. Fall can be a particularly busy time of year; however, a few easily implemented ideas can go a long way to add a festive vibe to your home. (STATEPOINT)
