Meetings to outline ambulance service funding proposal

A fitting honor for a community servant

Referendum on matter set for April 7 By Gail Peckler-Dziki The Village of Antioch and the First Fire Protection District have scheduled town hall meetings to disseminate information about the April referendum proposal for funding for ambulance service. The Wednesday, March 4, meeting will take place at 7 p.m. at Fire Station No. 3, 24675 W. Grass Lake Rd. This is the fire station wholly owned by FFPD1. The Thursday, March 19, meeting is scheduled for 7 p.m. at Fire Station No. 1, 835 Holbeck Dr., in the village. On April 7, all residents of Antioch, both in the village and unincorporated area, will face another referendum to fund ambulance service in their community. They will vote on a proposal to create a .25 percent tax rate to provide ambulance services. According to Matt Tabar,

member of the fire protection district board, “This is not about what has happened in the past. This is about what people want to see in heir community now.” “For this year,” Tabar explained, “through April 30, ambulances are operating in the village and district.” “The district is using financial reserves to pay for the services this fiscal year,” Tabar continued. “That option will not be available in the future, as the funds will be depleted.” All three stations were open from May 9 through Dec. 1, 2014. When the last referenda failed, Station No. 3 was closed and three personnel slots were cut back because of lack of funding. The fire protection district did purchase a used ambulance last May. It was equipped and put in service with district and Foreign Fire Insurance funds.

The Antioch Chamber and the Antioch Junior Woman’s Club have joined forces to present an evening of food and entertainment on Saturday, March 7. The event will be held at Dockers North, 955 N. Highway 59, Antioch. Cash bar begins at 5:30 p.m., followed by a dinner buffet at 6:30 p.m. Comedy enter-

tainment will be provided by Mission Improvable. Tickets must be purchased in advance and are $35 per person. Only 150 tickets will be sold. All proceeds benefit Open Arms Food Pantry. Tickets are available online at www.antiochchamber.org or from any AJWC member or chamber director.

Pall bearers step up to remove the casket carrying the body of Mabel Lou Weber from the vintage 1932 fire engine that transported the longtime Antioch resident to her funeral in late January. Weber was the first passenger to ride on the truck at age 4 in 1932 when her father – a firefighter – picked up the truck from its manufacturer.

The body of Mabel Lou Weber is brought to Antioch Methodist Church for her funeral Jan. 28. She served as an organist for the congregation for 70 years.

In 1932 at the age of 4, Mabel Lou Weber had the privilege of being the first passenger to ride in Antioch’s shiny new fire engine. It was fitting then that her final ride 82 years later came aboard that same truck. Weber, who died Jan. 24 at the age of 86, was transported to her final resting place atop the well-preserved fire engine. On Feb. 16, the Antioch Village Board formally recognized Weber with a proclamation honoring her life and legacy of service to the community. “Mabel Lou enriched the Antioch Community with her fervor and gusto, which earned her the nickname ‘Gus,’” the proclamation reads. “Mabel Lou could energize a room just by entering it, and was a blessing to those who ever met her. She

had a dynamic spirit and a true love for her community, which is unparalleled by any other.” According to the proclamation, Weber’s education in community service began at a young age. She went with her father, Elmer Hunter – a 50-year member of the Antioch Fire Department – to pick up the 1932 Stoughton fire engine in Wisconsin. She also learned community service from her mother, Martha, who served as village treasurer. Mabel Lou Weber then went on to establish a long record of community service that included 70 years as organist at the Methodist Church in Antioch, 16 years as a village trustee and stints on numerous community-service
