‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ begins run See it through Feb. 22
PM&L Theater’s production of “Meet Me in St. Louis” opened on Feb. 6, and will run two more weekends in Antioch. Most musicals start on the stage and make their way to Hollywood. “Meet Me in St. Louis” turned that tradition on its ear when it first opened on Broadway, 45 years after the 1944 film hit the silver screen. Director Mark Badtke brings the story of the happy Smith family, anticipating the wonders of the 1904 World’s Fair, to life on PM&L’s stage. Featuring song standards such as “The Boy Next Door,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Trolley Song,” the show is suitable for all ages. “Meet Me in St. Louis” will run Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 13, 14 and 20, 21 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, Feb. 15 and 22, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.pmltheatre. com and are $16 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve your tickets directly through the box office, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon and one-and-ahalf hours before curtain on show dates. PM&L Theatre is at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch.

With the arrival last week of measles in Northeastern Illinois, the debate over vaccinations now hits close to home. Doctors, parents and politicians all over the nation are offering their opinions following the measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in California. Top health leaders have linked the outbreak to children who were not vaccinated for the disease. Public health officials in Illinois are still trying to determine the source of the disease that infected five babies at a Palatine day care center. As of Monday there had been six confirmed cases of measles in the state, according to reports. Dr. Lainna Callentine, who volunteers at clinics for the underserved in Illinois, said it’s crucial that parents and their child’s pediatrician have an open dialogue about the reasons they are choosing – or not choosing – to vaccinate. “As a pediatrician, my role is to educate and to empower parents to make healthy decisions on behalf of their children,” she said. “But I have to respect that a parent has a right, ultimately, to make that decision, and that is not my

personal right on their behalf.” According to a Pew Research Center report, about 68 percent of Americans say vaccines should be required, and 30 percent say vaccines should be a matter of personal choice. Parents may choose to not vaccinate or delay vaccinating children for many reasons including religious beliefs, medical issues, poverty or a lack of access to medical care. Some doctors refuse to accept patients whose parents are anti-vaccine. Callentine said that is sending the wrong message.
