‘Meet Me in St. Louis’ begins run See it through Feb. 22

PM&L Theater’s production of “Meet Me in St. Louis” opened on Feb. 6, and will run two more weekends in Antioch. Most musicals start on the stage and make their way to Hollywood. “Meet Me in St. Louis” turned that tradition on its ear when it first opened on Broadway, 45 years after the 1944 film hit the silver screen. Director Mark Badtke brings the story of the happy Smith family, anticipating the wonders of the 1904 World’s Fair, to life on PM&L’s stage. Featuring song standards such as “The Boy Next Door,” “Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas” and “The Trolley Song,” the show is suitable for all ages. “Meet Me in St. Louis” will run Fridays and Saturdays, Feb. 13, 14 and 20, 21 at 8 p.m. and Sundays, Feb. 15 and 22, at 2:30 p.m. Tickets are available online at www.pmltheatre. com and are $16 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve your tickets directly through the box office, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to noon and one-and-ahalf hours before curtain on show dates. PM&L Theatre is at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch.

With the arrival last week of measles in Northeastern Illinois, the debate over vaccinations now hits close to home. Doctors, parents and politicians all over the nation are offering their opinions following the measles outbreak that began at Disneyland in California. Top health leaders have linked the outbreak to children who were not vaccinated for the disease. Public health officials in Illinois are still trying to determine the source of the disease that infected five babies at a Palatine day care center. As of Monday there had been six confirmed cases of measles in the state, according to reports. Dr. Lainna Callentine, who volunteers at clinics for the underserved in Illinois, said it’s crucial that parents and their child’s pediatrician have an open dialogue about the reasons they are choosing – or not choosing – to vaccinate. “As a pediatrician, my role is to educate and to empower parents to make healthy decisions on behalf of their children,” she said. “But I have to respect that a parent has a right, ultimately, to make that decision, and that is not my

personal right on their behalf.” According to a Pew Research Center report, about 68 percent of Americans say vaccines should be required, and 30 percent say vaccines should be a matter of personal choice. Parents may choose to not vaccinate or delay vaccinating children for many reasons including religious beliefs, medical issues, poverty or a lack of access to medical care. Some doctors refuse to accept patients whose parents are anti-vaccine. Callentine said that is sending the wrong message.

Finally some snow!

Last week’s snowstorm, which dumped double-digit totals of snow over the area, prompted plenty of children to get out and enjoy the white stuff. At right: Central student Luke Blair leaps over Leah Blair. Far right: youngsters slide at Christ Lutheran Church near Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division and Special Investigations Unit participated in a nationwide operation that specifically targeted customers of prostitutes, better known as “Johns.” A coalition of local and federal law enforcement agencies joined together in a continuing campaign to suppress the demand for “purchased sex.” The operation is defined as a Web-based reverse sting meaning that the prostitutes are actually Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies. “We do not desire to be the morals police, however, prostitution is illegal,” Lake County Sheriff Mark C. Curran Jr. said. “Further, prostitution is not a victimless crime and the sex trade and sex slavery are evils that we will fight with all we have.” The two-day operation was conducted in southern and northern Lake County where Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies posed as prostitutes with Discover the

an “escort” advertisement on a social media site that has been used frequently to transact prostitution. When the Johns arrive and offer money to the undercover deputies for sex, they are arrested and transported to the Lake County Jail. Nelson, 52, of Vernon Hills; John Coldea, 48, of Lincolnwood, Dana M. Oberlin, 59, of Northfield; Dimitar I. Dimitrov, 49, of Schiller Park; Jerome W. Sekulich, 55, of Waukegan; Jose L. Bever-

Many thanks to all who have helped

Dear readers, We have been very busy answering the pleas for assistance. We want to thank you, our donors, and those who are busy helping us answer these pleas and for helping us make our mission of relieving the pains of poverty a success. The work that all of us do together to help those in desperate need also has a very rewarding effect on those who know the people we help. This past week we have received several touching thank you notes – one from a supporter, one from a friend of one of our recipients and one from a senior citizen recently helped thanks to all of you. We want to share with all of you their own words of heartfelt gratitude and appreciation for what we have been accomplishing together through The Time Is Now to Help. Posted on a supporter’s Facebook page: So, most of you know about the non-profit organization that I have been donating to since last March, The Time Is Now to Help, from Lake Geneva, Wisconsin. With my high school friend Harry passing away last year at the end of February, and with going to Harry’s funeral, I was introduced to the founder of

By

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

this organization and his wife, Sal and Corinne Dimiceli. This organization is more than amazing. They helped Harry, who was a quadriplegic, for years, but I had no clue that they were because Harry never told me. Sal to Harry was a friend. The cool thing about The Time Is Now to Help is that the money that you donate to their organization? All of your money that you donate goes directly to helping people in need. Every single cent. Yes. Every single cent. So, I started donating $25 every paycheck to this organization since early March of 2014 because of what they do for people here in southeastern Wisconsin and especially for what they did for my friend, Harry. Now, fast forward to April 2014. My friend Heidi was diagnosed with lung cancer. Heidi beat breast cancer in 2010. So, in May I approached Heidi and asked if I could share her story with Sal and Corinne at The Time Is Now to Help. Heidi didn’t want to ask for help because she was too proud

to ask. But, she wasn’t going to be able to work both of her jobs anymore. She finally agreed for me to share her cancer story. The Time is Now to Help did an amazing thing for Heidi. Heidi was able to no longer work at both jobs. They paid for four months of rent for her and wrote out a personal check to Heidi for her to take care of whatever needs she had and she was then able to spend time with her family and friends until she passed away the day before her 50th birthday at the end of June 2014. The reason I share my story here is because two close friends of mine who passed away were helped by this awesome organization, The Time Is Now to Help. Today I went through my letters from this organization where they personally send a thank you for your donation and heartfelt words with every donation. I have been writing out a $25 check every two weeks when I get paid in memory of Harry and in memory of Heidi. I always enclose a little note with my check saying my donation is in memory of them and always write God bless and thank them for all they do. Wow, when I totaled my donations this afternoon, since March 5 through Dec. 27, 2014, I have donated $500 to The Time Is Now to Help.

And you know what? I never even missed that $25 every two weeks. But to know that my donation has directly gone to help those in need? I feel more than blessed. I thank Sal and Corinne and all of their volunteers and those who donate to help. If you get a chance, please check out their website. Sal’s story is amazing. The very first picture that comes up on the site, where Sal is leaning over a man in a wheel chair, that’s my high school friend, Harry. I will be continuing to donate $25 every two weeks because I believe in you and your organization that strongly. God bless you Sal and Corinne for all that you do with your organization, The Time Is Now to Help. Letter from a friend: Hello, my name is -------. I live in Illinois. My best friend lives in Walworth County. For the last year she has been struggling with just about everything in her life. Besides the many hardships she faced, her financial problems had driven her to a deep depression. For months I’ve feared that when we hung up, it might be for the last time. I honestly thought she would commit suicide. Every time she seemed so close to doing it, we’d talk for hours. It was the only thing

NATIVE AMERICAN & SOUTHWESTERN CULTURE ANTIQUES, COLLECTIBLES, FURNITURE & HOUSEHOLD AUCTION

I could do. I could not offer financial support as my family lives paycheck to paycheck. This friend took me in while I was in my third trimester of pregnancy. At the time I had two very young children already and was taking nursing assistant classes. We’ve been through a lot together and my heart broke every time I heard the desperation in her voice. I didn’t know how to help other than listen to her and allow her to vent and cry. My husband and I offered to allow her to come to stay with us upon her eviction. But you stepped in and are doing so much for her! I’ve prayed for her for so long but even in my prayers I never imagined the kind of help she’s receiving from you. Thank you doesn’t seem like enough, but I do, with all my heart, thank you. To hear of all of this is amazing! You truly are God’s love in action. This is an amazing blessing and I pray one day she sees this as her testimony! God bless you and your organization.

Letter from a senior: Dear Mr. Sal, If you only knew how I so appreciate your God-given life to have the opportunity to help people who can’t help themselves at the time of their dilemma. I thank God for you looking out for me! I really needed to heal. It’s good to know God’s people are around, you just have to seek and you shall find! I still can’t say enough! Words cannot express my thankfulness to you for being God’s instrument, letting him use you to know when you hear the cry and the ones who really need your help. Thank you to your donors that help you be in the position to give like your organization does. One day when God blesses me, I want to sow back into your ministry. Thank you to The Time Is Now to Help for helping me go to the dentist and get my teeth fixed. Thanks to The Time Is Now to Help my mouth feels good again. I can eat again and not be in the constant terrible pain I was living in every day. I cannot say in words the relief I feel not being in pain before, during and after I eat. Thank you again. God bless you. Love, PH These are just a few of the letters that have touched us deeply in the past week. We do not often get a chance to share the thank-you notes we receive with all of you. These letters and all the others we receive help to remind us why we do what we do, removing the pains of poverty for those that turn to us in desperate need. I will continue to reach out to our vast group of volunteers calling upon you to help in our mission of doing God’s work of loving our fellow creations. Thank you to Richard H. People have their bucket lists – things they want to do before they, you know, kick the bucket. And, people have lists of goals – also things they want to do. But how about a list of “I nevers?” You know, things you’ve never done, and probably never will – but you never know. I started this list a while ago, and then happened to see it played as a game on a TV talk show where the guests answered honestly whether they’d never been to a nude beach, never been arrested or never seen one another naked. My nevers are decidedly less movie-star and more G-rated. Although I never have been to a nude beach.

I’ve never chopped down a tree. I’ve never eaten chopped liver. A person could go on forever with their nevers. I hope I’ve encouraged you to think about it yourself. What have you never done? This process has helped me realize there are some things on the list that I hope I get to, eventually. Especially the trips to Hawaii and the Grand Canyon – but probably not the tattoo or lipstick on the pig. Then again, I’ve learned to never say never. Chris Wells, a sophomore at Elkhorn Area High School, appreciates the importance of providing fish plenty of places to hide and the role of water movement in helping them exercise. Inset: Wells’ tank provides plenty of cover for his fish, such as the Coeruleus, a cichlid from Malawi Lake in Africa, pictured here peeking out from an alcove.

F

or some people throwing a goldfish into a bowl full of water, then adding colored gravel and fake plants is enough to say they have an aquarium. For others like Chris Wells – a sophomore at Elkhorn Area High School

– owning one fish is not enough and it all soon blooms into a full-blown hobby. Wells took up the hobby, starting with a small 10-gallon tank and the help of a family friend who cleans and maintains fish tanks around the area. Wells has now moved up to a 50-gallon tank set up in his bedroom, stocked with Ahlis and Coeruleus, a bright yellow cichlid that comes from Malawi Lake in Africa. “I’ve had everything from guppies to cichlids,” he said. His first tank is now on display in one of the high school’s science rooms.

All sorts of variety

Wells said the different colors of the fish, fiddling around with the tank and maintaining it are only a few of the many things that keep his passion burning. “Some people don’t like cleaning the tank, but it’s something I love doing because I’m a hands-on guy,” he said. Wells thinks aquariums have become a bigger hobby over the past few years, including saltwater tanks – often containing live coral. Wells said many are

downsizing their captive coral collections, though, in an attempt to stop harvesting of coral from reefs in the world’s oceans. People who own live coral are breaking it down into smaller pieces and selling it among other hobbyists. Steering away from saltwater tanks means many are starting to collect freshwater fish. “I think the freshwater hobby is really booming right now because a lot of people are getting into it, it’s fairly easy, inexpensive and it’s just a lot of fun to have,” he said. Wells said he would definitely recommend a smaller freshwater tank for any family, due to its fairly easy maintenance and low cost. Though he said he’s not pursuing it as a career path, Wells said he plans to always have a fish tank in his house. “It’s a fun thing to look at. It’s a relaxing thing and if you get really good at it, you can breed the fish,” Wells said, pointing out a batch of young Coeruleus he recently hatched and is raising for his tank. “You can sell the babies and get more money for the hobby. It’s a cycle.”

Setting up a tank

To date, Wells has tried his hand at both fresh and saltwater tanks. While saltwater tanks have become more popular in recent years now that smaller tanks are more feasible, Wells recently took his down because they can get quite expensive. Wells said aqua-scaping – the way plants, rocks and the sand/gravel base are laid out – can play an important role in the activity of the fish. By giving the fish more places to hide, Wells said the fish will actually be more active, spending more time in sight because the fish feel more secure. “The more hiding places you have, the less they will hide,” he said. Wells said it took him some time to set up the rocks in a way that is both aesthetically pleasing and serves a purpose, stacking and restacking several times. While he said it might look like a bunch of stacked rocks, he set it up so the fish had alcoves and crevices to dip in and out of. Additionally, he had to keep in mind the fish he keeps actually dig out a sand bed below overhangs, carrying sand

HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, FEB. 11, 2015 • 11 in their mouth to another location in the tank. “It takes a little effort,” he said. Lighting also plays an important role in keeping a successful aquarium. Wells currently uses a 40-inch 50/50 fluorescent one-bulb fixture, giving a nice mix of blue and white light. Wells said blue bulbs can have a nice effect in saltwater aquariums, while white bulbs are beneficial when trying to grow live plants in an aquarium. Wells has two SunSun Wavemaker pumps that can be hooked up to a Wavemaker box, causing the pumps to pulsate giving the tank a more natural flow and feel. While only one is a necessity, Wells said he has two, which adds to the flow of water in the tank. Wells said while water flow is more important in saltwater tanks, water flow in a freshwater tank also has its purpose – not only providing a pleasant aesthetic aspect, but also giving fish a current to swim against, giving them exercise and keeping them active. “It’ll keep them moving around, swimming against the current,” he said. Additionally, Wells said heaters and filters play important roles in an aquarium, helping to keep the water at a safe and comfortable temperature for the fish and keep the tank clean and wastefree.

Selecting livestock

Wells said when selecting fish for a tank, there’s many options of not only what kind of fish to get, but also where to get them. Wells said he’s purchased fish from stores like Petco and PetSmart in the past and has even gone through breeders in the Lake Geneva area. However what’s more important is doing a little research before throwing a bunch of fish together in a tank.

more regular basis. “You have to try it first and see how much they’ll eat,” he said. “If there’s excess food, don’t feed them a second time, let them pick it off the bottom.” Wells said a tank should typically be cleaned once a week, cleaning the glass, sand and changing out a portion of the water with clean water during the process.

Wells said fish come in three levels of compatibility: community, semiaggressive and aggressive. He said it’s advisable not to mix fish from different levels. “If you put a community fish with an aggressive fish, guess what’s going to happen,” he said. “The aggressive fish are going to kill the community fish. “You can mix and match some fish, but you have to do some research.” Wells suggested looking up a compatibility chart to see which fish will mesh well with each other. Some fish species also can be more difficult to care for and might require extra attention or special treatment. Wells also said it’s important to research how large a fish can get and how many gallons a fish needs for movement and gaining territories for itself. Finally, Wells said while ordering fish online is possible, he doesn’t suggest it as there’s no guarantee the fish will survive shipment. Going to a local pet store allows buyers to make sure the fish is healthy, find out what and how much the fish is eating per day, what the fish need to thrive and receive immediate answers to any questions they might have about caring for the fish.

“You just have to ask around,” he said. “Go to your local pet store. They know what they’re talking about.” He said he can’t emphasize enough that it takes a little effort to make an aquarium a positive experience. “If you don’t put in a little effort, you won’t enjoy it, you won’t get the full gist of what it’s going to give you,” he said. “It’s like a car; you take care of the car, the car’s going to take care of you. You take care of the fish tank, the fish tank’s going to take care of you.”

Words of Wisdom

Finally, Wells said when questions come up, the best way to find help is to ask.

Maintaining a tank

Once a tank is set up, it’s not going to take care of itself and there is still work to be done, such as cleaning and feeding, Wells said. When it comes to feeding, Wells said it’s important to monitor the activity of the fish and how much they eat, as overfeeding can have a negative effect on the tank. Too much food in the tank leads to more waste and more work, as the filter will have to be cleaned on a

According to Wells, adult male and females can be distinguished by their color. The male pictured is a bright blue, while the female’s color is much simpler.

Parents may choose to not vaccinate or delay vaccinating children for many reasons including religious beliefs, medical issues, poverty or a lack of access to medical care. Some doctors refuse to accept patients whose parents are anti-vaccine. Callentine said that is sending the wrong message.
