Gun rumor proves false School was placed on lockdown Concerns about a possible weapon at Antioch Community High School resulted in a “soft” lockdown of the school Thursday, according to Antioch police. Police, however, said they found no credible evidence to support the concern. At approximately 10:40 a.m., Antioch police were requested at the school for a delayed report of a possible weapon that was seen on school grounds. While conducting that investigation with school administration, at 1:09 p.m., there was another call received stating a possible weapon had been seen in a classroom.

Administrators conducted a “soft” lockdown of the students in order to investigate the report, police said. After speaking with several students officials determined there was no weapon at school, only a passing discussion overheard by students while walking to class. The students also mentioned some type of game going on in the school involving a water pistol. After completing the investigation, school administrators lifted the lockdown. Antioch police remained at the school for the remainder of the day to provide assistance.

Household chemical waste collections set The Solid Waste Agency of Lake County will host two separate household chemical waste collection events this month. The first is on Saturday, March 14, and the second is on Monday, March 23. Both are at the SWALCO facility, 1311 N. Estes St., Gurnee. Appointments are required. Collections are for residential waste only. No business waste will be accepted. The event is free for Illinois residents only. Visit www.swalco.org to schedule

Making it disappear

Not to be outdone by any magician, Ben Svoboda (above), 10, makes a chicken breast disappear in front of his date for the day, his mother Karen, at the Mother-Son Magic Show and Luncheon held at the Antioch Senior Center on Sunday. The first-time event, sponsored by the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department, sold out both of its seatings. Round Lake magician Magic Dave (at right) provides the entertainment with his award-winning magic show, which included levitating one of the young volunteers in attendance, Liam Perkins, 4.

an appointment. Items that can be brought include: CFL bulbs, unwanted prescription drugs, over-the-counter medicines and supplements, household cleaners, gasoline, garden chemicals, pesticides, oilbased paints (no latex) and varnishes, as well as other household chemicals. Taxpayers urged to use free state tax services With the April 15 tax-filing deadline approaching, state Rep. Jack D. Franks, D-Marengo, is encouraging taxpayers to use state resources that assist with processing tax returns and tracking refunds. “Tax season is already a stressful time, so paying unnecessary fees to file tax returns should not add to the irritation,” Franks said. “Often times, preparation services sell taxpayers free processing on federal returns while hiding the large fees they charge to process state returns.”

By visiting www.tax.illinois.gov and following the links that correspond to their filing status, Illinois residents can file their state income tax returns for free. After filing, taxpayers can sign up to receive text message or email updates concerning the status of their refund by visiting www.myrefund.illinoiscomptroller.com. The Illinois Department of Human Services also offers free tax preparation assistance at locations throughout the state for families earning less than $50,000 per year and individuals with yearly

incomes under $25,000. Locations can be found by visiting: http://tax.illinois.gov/ News/2015FreeTaxAssistanceProviders.pdf. “Illinois provides electronic and community-based resources that make paying preparation fees unnecessary,” Franks added. “I hope everyone will take advantage of these services and take some of the sting out of paying their taxes.” For more information, please contact Franks’ fulltime constituent service office at (815) 334-0063 or email jack@jackfranks.org.

Pet vaccination clinic is Saturday The Lake County Health Department Community Health Center’s Animal Care and Control Program will offer a low-cost pet vaccination clinic on Saturday. The event will take place from 9 a.m. to noon at the Lake County Fairgrounds, 1060 E. Peterson Road in Grayslake. The clinic is a convenient and affordable way for Lake County residents to keep pets up to date with shots and rabies tags. Vaccination costs are as follows: • For pets that are spayed or

neutered: One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag, $20; one-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper, $25; distemper complex only, $10; microchip, $15. • For pets that are not spayed or neutered: One-year rabies vaccination and Lake County tag, $60; one-year rabies vaccination, tag and distemper, $65; distemper complex only, $10; microchip, $15. • For an additional $5 donation, groomers with the All in Ag 4-H club will provide nail trims. Pets will be taken on a first-

come, first-served basis. All animals brought to the clinic must be at least four months old. Dogs must be leashed and cats placed in carriers. Only cash will be accepted on site. The Health Department’s Animal Care and Control Program tracks pet vaccinations and rabies tags, investigates animal bites and complaints of nuisance and neglect, as well as impounds stray animals. For additional information, contact the Health Department’s Animal Care and Control facility at (847) 377-4700.

the trend Robotics clubs in one local area attract more girls than boys By Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER

he statistics say young women aren’t entering STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) fields at the same rate as young

men. In fact, the Department of Commerce’s “Women in STEM: A Gender Gap to Innovation” (August 2011) showed only 24 percent of the STEM workforce is made up of women, even though women earn on average 33 percent more when they work in those high-growth fields. “One of the things that I really strongly believe in is that we need to have more girls interested in math, science, and engineering,” President Barack Obama said in 2013. “We’ve got half the population that is way underrepresented in those fields and that means that we’ve got a whole bunch of talent … not being encouraged the way they need to.” The movement to increase female participation in the STEM fields trickles down from the White House all the way to local schools. In East Troy, there is a concerted effort in the School District to get all children more involved in STEM clas-ses. Every sixth grader at East Troy Middle School has been required to take the robotics class since the 201314 school year. There are also elective robotics class offered in seventh and eight grade, which are very well attended, said Amy Foszpanczyk, director of curriculum and instruction in the district. The Patronum Bots, one of the robotics teams in East Troy, assists in these classes. “We have at least two (sometimes three) team members helping in the classrooms every day to assist the teachers and students,” Shawn Hunter, club advisor, said. The other robotics club in the district is eTREC (East Troy Robotics and Engineering Club). While the rest of the nation struggles to get more girls interested in things like robotics, the East Troy clubs have far more girls participating than boys. The Patronum Bots is an allgirl team with Caitlin Hunter,

seventh grade; Brianna Fridley, 10th grade; Rachel Hunter, 11th grade; Emerson Dignan, 10th grade and Lauren Hunter, ninth grade. The eTREC team is at three members with two boys and one girl – Joey Finch, eighth grade; Tim Zinniker, 11th grade; and Meghan Griffin, 10th grade. Nik Prusinski, who attends St. Francis High School in Milwaukee, left the team after its season ended, but may be back next year. But it’s Griffin who’s the unofficial leader of the eTREC group. “I think it’s because she’s so passionate about it,” Tim Griffin, eTREC advisor and dad to Meghan, said. “She just gets so excited by what they’re doing and naturally takes the lead.” Meghan, who has hopes of attending MIT and becoming a mechanical engineer, said she loves to work with her hands and watch the progression of the team’s work throughout the season. “This is something we need to promote in our schools,” Tim Griffin said. “We need to encourage the girls to get involved. There are women in the field that aren’t just reaching the glass ceiling, they’re breaking through and our girls need to know they can too.” Both the Patronum Bots and eTREC teams have been competing in the 2014-15 FIRST Tech Challenge (see related article on this page). The worldwide challenge, Cascade Effect, was put to the students last September, and the teams began work immediately. The goal this season was to build a robot that could pick up balls in the challenge court and deposit them into a storage container. The teams followed the engineering process beginning with brainstorming on how they might solve the problem, building a prototype then a proof of concept (a functional build), tweaking that concept in the final design stage and then moving on to the final build. The eTREC team used things such as 3D printers to custom make parts of their robots and had to record their progress each step of the way in a project notebook that goes with them for every competition.

TRACY OUELLETTE Hi-Liter

Above: eTREC (East Troy Robotics and Engineering Club) teammates Meghan Griffin and Joey Finch demonstrate how the team’s robot “Borg” operates. The team of Griffin, Finch, Tim Zinniker (from left) and Nik Prusinski constructed the robot for the FIRST Tech Challenge 2014-15 competition season. At right: Griffin, Zinniker and Finch work on the club’s summer project, an automated soda dispenser.

“It’s our specialized Book of Knowledge that teaches us everything we need to know,” Finch said. It’s a time-consuming process that takes the kids months to complete before heading into the competition phase in January and February. The eTREC team brought home the Inspire Award from the FIRST FTC Wisconsin Qualifying tournament in Madison Jan. 25 and advanced to the state tournament in Milwaukee Feb. 7. The team’s season ended at the state tourney, when their robot “Borg” wasn’t able to complete the challenge and they did not advance. But that’s okay with the kids. “We learn so much more from our mistakes than our successes,” Meghan said. “We really do.” “Borg had a very good record of crawling up the wall like Spider-Man and flopping over in shame,” Finch said, explaining the problem the team had with the robot and how it kept catching on part of a ramp and ending up on its side.

The eTREC teammates took it all in stride and say the things they learned this year will help them next year and it was worth all the hard work they put into it. “I was impressed when they showed the same enthusiasm and sense of accomplishment after coming in last at the second tournament as they did when they received the Inspire Award, at the first tournament,” Tim Griffin said. “They have come a long way and are very eager to do it all again next year.” Tim Griffin has the kids working on a summer project to keep their skills sharp for next season. They’re building an automated soda dispenser, which has to include parts from this season’s challenge project and be programmable. Patronum Bots still competing The Patronum Bots are still in the run for a FIRST Tech Challenge championship. They recently won the Inspire Award (which automatically advances them to the next round) at the Iowa’s Wild Card Qualifier.

The team competed at the Iowa FTC Championship March 6-7; results were unavailable at press time. The Patronum Bots will travel to Des Moines, Iowa, March 26-28 to compete in the FTC North Super Regional where 72 teams will compete for one of 25 invitations to participate in the FTC World Championship. “If the Patronum Bots qualify, we will then travel to St. Louis from April 22-25 to compete at the FTC World Championship, where only 128 out of over 3500 FTC teams worldwide get a chance to compete against the best teams from around the world,” Hunter said. “At the start of the season the girls set some very challenging goals for themselves. However, they have positioned themselves well to be able to achieve those goals at the Super Regional and (hopefully) World Championship competitions. The girls have worked hard to earn the success they have achieved so far and we are excited to see how the rest of the season unfolds,” Hunter added.

The Cascade Effect challenge FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), an international, K-12 not-for-profit organization founded by inventor Dean Kamen to inspire young people’s interest and participation in science and technology, launched its 2014-15 FIRST Tech Challenge season with an online game reveal last fall. FTC teams gathered at 52 international kickoff events to get a first glimpse of this season’s game: Cascade Effect. An estimated 44,500 students on 4,450 teams around the world participated in the

2014-15 FTC season. FIRST Tech Challenge is a robotics program for grades 7 through 12 that promotes project-based learning. Using a proven formula to engage student interest in science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), FTC is one of the fastest-growing programs of its kind. FTC is scalable and easily integrates into the classroom with measurable results. FIRST teams collaborate with business, engineering, and science professionals, and working together, become a focal point of the

community in which they live. “Like all FIRST programs, FIRST Tech Challenge is about more than robots,” said Donald E. Bossi, FIRST president. “Through their participation, students learn the value of hard work and creative problem-solving. As they tackle Cascade Effect this season, FIRST Tech Challenge teams must work together, share ideas, and understand that failure is part of the road to success – much like a ‘real-world’ engineering project they would encounter in the workforce.” Using a combination of motors,

controllers, wireless communications, metal gears, and sensors, including infrared tracking and magnet seeking, students will program their robots to operate in both autonomous and driver-controlled modes on a specially designed field. The object of the 2014-15 game was to score more points than an opponent by placing balls into rolling goals and then moving goals into scoring areas. Points can also be awarded when balls are shot into a center goal. For more information, visit www.usfirst. org.

Lindenhurst honors its the year

SUBMITTED PHOTO Hi-Liter

Police Officer Hugo Robles (center) is honored recently by Mayor Susan Lahr and Police Chief Kevin Klahs as the village’s Police Officer of the Year for 2014.

With the April 15 tax-filing deadline approaching, state Rep.

The Illinois Department of Human Services also offers free tax preparation assistance at locations throughout the state for families earning less than $50,000 per year and individuals with year-

ly incomes under $25,000. Locations can be found by visiting: http://tax.illinois. gov/News/2015FreeTaxAssistanceProviders.pdf.

Visit www.swalco.org to schedule an

appointment. Items that can be brought include: CFL bulbs, unwanted prescription drugs, overthe-counter medicines and supplements, household cleaners, gasoline, garden chemicals, pesticides, oil-based paints (no latex) and varnishes, as well as other household chemicals. For a more detailed list, visit SWALCO’s website at www.swalco.org. Visitors can sign up to receive occasional announcements about SWALCO programs and events.

Community happenings Round Lake to host block party

The Round Lake Chamber is hosting a Community Block Party on Saturday, March 14, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. There will be a business showcase, crafters and entertainment, including Enchanted Elsa and her favorite snowman. Visitors will have a chance to watch an exotic animal show, meet former Chicago Bears player Eric Kumerow,

jump in a bouncy house or ride a mechanical bull. There is no admission fee. The event will be held at Round Lake Beach Sports Center, 2004 Municipal Way. For more information, visit: www.rlchamber.org or call (847) 546-2002.

Society will host a show and tell session at its March 21 meeting. The meeting begins at 9:30 a.m. at Grant Hall Museum, 411 Washington St., Ingleside. Non-members are welcome. Refreshments will be served. Grant Hall Museum is Historical Society open the first and third Sunof the month from 1 to to host show and days 4 p.m. and for special group tours on request. tell For more information, The Fox Lake-Grant Township Area Historical call (847) 587-0544.

Sheriff doubles budget savings With a quarter of the fiscal year gone, the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office has cut spending by $2.4 million over the same three-month period last year, according to Sheriff Bill Prim. When he took office last Dec. 1, Prim inherited a budget that was smaller by about $1 million than the previous fiscal year, according to a department press release. Since then, the Sheriff’s Office more than doubled the amount it needed to cut from the annual budget. Total expenditures at the close of the quarter stood at roughly $6.3 million, while the same budget period last year saw expenditures of $8.7 million. “Budget figures may ebb and flow depending on many factors, and there may be unforeseen challenges that either

speed up or slow down our progress for the rest of the fiscal year, but we are doing well out of the starting gate,” Prim said. “We are working to achieve the maximum effective deployment of taxpayer dollars across all sectors of the Sheriff’s Office, and the results, while still early, are encouraging.” A major factor is the decline in overtime pay. The period saw reductions of 27 percent in administration bureau overtime, 25 percent in jail overtime, and another 25 percent in court security. “Any law enforcement administrator knows that the bulk of his budget goes to salaries, consisting of both regular and overtime pay,” Prim added. “If you can show improvement in either category, the effects are significant. We have improved both.”

Spring floral design show set for March 24 JUDE KAIDER HI-Liter

The Richmond Garden Club will host its Spring Floral Design Show on Tuesday, March 24, at 7:30 p.m. at the Richmond-Burton High School, 8311 Highway 31, Richmond. Twice a year, the club hosts shows to feature local floral designers as they create spring and holiday-inspired centerpieces on stage. All creations are raffled at the end of the show. Many audience participants get to leave the show with a centerpiece of their own.

Admission is $10 and includes a raffle ticket. The money raised from the show helps fund a college scholarship for Richmond-Burton High School students. The club also donates each year to the local food pantry, the Nippersink Library, the Silver Trees Retirement Community and the public schools. Those interested in joining the Richmond Garden Club can call Sandy Mahoney at (815) 678-7929 or visit www.richmondgardenclub.info.

Students visit Springfield

State Rep Jack D. Franks (left) meets with students from Johnsburg High School during their visit to Springfield on Mar. 3. The students learned about state government and civic engagement during a question and answer session hosted by Franks.

Girl Scout donates cookies to food pantry Local residents who use the Richmond-Spring Grove Food Pantry will get free Girl Scout Cookies the next time they visit thanks to Daisy Girl Scout Emma Reule of Spring Grove. Pantry director Char Kania received a donation of 35-plus boxes from Reule of Daisy Troop 1270, Richmond. The cookies were donated by

friends and family of Reule, who purchased them to help her meet her sales goal. For more information on the Girl Scouts, call the Northern Illinois Council at (847) 741-5521. Anyone interested in donating to the Richmond-Spring Grove Food Pantry should contact Kania at (815) 6784351.

Sheriff’s presentation on scams is today The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office is teaming up with Senior Services to present information on current scams in McHenry County. The presentation is Wednesday, March 11, from 10 to 11 a.m., at the McHenry Township Senior Services offices, 3703 N. Richmond Road in Johnsburg. As part of the sheriff’s quarterly educational series, this presentation aims to provide information on tax scams and other scams observed in the last three months. Tips will be given on what to watch for, how to

Sheriff’s Office to target drunken drivers for St. Patrick’s Day The McHenry County Sheriff’s Office will conduct special patrols in the days associated with the St. Patrick’s Day holiday to crack down on drunken drivers. In addition to looking for drunken drivers, deputies will be stepping up seat belt enforcement particularly at night when seat belt usage rates are lowest. The Sheriff’s Office offers the following tips for those who are hosting a St. Patrick’s Day party: • Remember, hosts can be held liable and prosecuted if someone they serve is in-

volved in a drunken driving crash; • Make sure guests designate a sober driver in advance or help arrange ride sharing with other sober drivers; • Serve lots of food and include non-alcoholic beverages at the party; • Keep the phone numbers for local cab companies handy and take the keys away from anyone who is thinking of driving drunk. For those attending a St. Patrick’s Day party: • Designate a sober driver before the party begins and give that person the car keys;

• Ask a sober friend for a ride home, call a cab, sober friend or family member, or stay the night; • Never let a friend leave your sight if they are about to drive while drunk; • Always buckle up – it is the best defense against a drunken driver. The St. Patrick’s Day Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over crackdown is funded by federal traffic safety funds from the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and administered through IDOT’s Division of Transportation Safety.
