Pickard produces formal set unique to Obama presidency By Jude Kaider CORRESPONDENT
It might be safe to conclude that most residents of Antioch and surrounding area will never attend a state dinner at the White House. Antioch was, nonetheless, well represented at the state dinner held for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie on April 28. The just under 200 guests invited to the affair were served an elegant five-course meal celebrating the bounty of spring with such exotic creations as Toro tartare and Caesar sashimi salad, vegetable consommé en croute and Shikai Maki, American Wagyu beef tenderloin, silken custard cake on the menu. Japanese “Iron Chef” Masaharu Morimoto was enlisted as guest chef to assist in the preparations. The meal was served on the new Obama State China Service made by internationally known, and Antioch’s very own, Pickard China, 782 Pickard Avenue. Long an Antioch fixture, the company was founded by Wilder Pickard in Edgerton, Wis., in 1893. Four years later, he moved operations to Chicago. Originally, Pickard hired artists to hand decorate china blanks produced by other companies, many of which were overseas. Today, 80 percent of antique Pickard artworks can be identified as Limoges
pieces from France. It was Wilder Pickard’s son, Austin, who convinced his father to change the company’s focus from hand decoration of gift pieces, such as vases and bowls, to the production of the fine china sets for which the business is now known. To this end, the company moved to its present location in Antioch, formerly the home of the Corona Pen Company, in 1930. For the next seven years Austin Pickard worked to perfect the art and science of manufacturing fine china. Despite this steep learning curve and another handicap known as The Great Depression, he succeeded in reinventing the company. Factory production of the china began in 1937. Pickard’s address still houses their
