Pickard produces formal set unique to Obama presidency By Jude Kaider CORRESPONDENT
It might be safe to conclude that most residents of Antioch and surrounding area will never attend a state dinner at the White House. Antioch was, nonetheless, well represented at the state dinner held for Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe and his wife Akie on April 28. The just under 200 guests invited to the affair were served an elegant five-course meal celebrating the bounty of spring with such exotic creations as Toro tartare and Caesar sashimi salad, vegetable consommé en croute and Shikai Maki, American Wagyu beef tenderloin, silken custard cake on the menu. Japanese “Iron Chef” Masaharu Morimoto was enlisted as guest chef to assist in the preparations. The meal was served on the new Obama State China Service made by internationally known, and Antioch’s very own, Pickard China, 782 Pickard Avenue. Long an Antioch fixture, the company was founded by Wilder Pickard in Edgerton, Wis., in 1893. Four years later, he moved operations to Chicago. Originally, Pickard hired artists to hand decorate china blanks produced by other companies, many of which were overseas. Today, 80 percent of antique Pickard artworks can be identified as Limoges
pieces from France. It was Wilder Pickard’s son, Austin, who convinced his father to change the company’s focus from hand decoration of gift pieces, such as vases and bowls, to the production of the fine china sets for which the business is now known. To this end, the company moved to its present location in Antioch, formerly the home of the Corona Pen Company, in 1930. For the next seven years Austin Pickard worked to perfect the art and science of manufacturing fine china. Despite this steep learning curve and another handicap known as The Great Depression, he succeeded in reinventing the company. Factory production of the china began in 1937. Pickard’s address still houses their

vice, as seen in the boardroom of Pickard China. Missing from the photo is the individual tureen and its liner plate. The company, a longtime Antioch fixture, had the distinction of producing the Obama State China Service, which made its first appearance at the state dinner held at the White House April 28.

and a relief of pinwheels and leaf fronds inspired by a design used in the 1806 service set of James Madison when he was secretary of state. Two pieces, the service plate which is the first seen at each state dinner, and the dessert plate, the last seen, bear the presidential seal in their center. The teacup also has a small seal on its side. The plates were also designed to have a narrower physical border and a wider-than-normal well to allow for more contemporary decorating and plating options. “There have been generations of people from Antioch and the area who have worked for Pickard. I’m sure they are all very proud of what we accomplished even if they haven’t been here while we worked on this project. We have had entire families working at Pickard, several generations at the same time,” he said. “Over the years, we’ve watched Antioch grow around us while we, as a company, have grown. Working on the presidential china is something all of our employees are proud of, I’m certainly proud of, and all of the Village of Antioch can be proud of, as well.” A setting of the Obama State China Service, as well as other historic Pickard china settings, is on display at the Pickard Museum at the company’s Antioch address. The museum and adjoining outlet store are open to the public Monday-Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Decals create vision Once the digital designs were completed, a process using “cold decals” began. These decals, which can be created on any printer, are applied to physical china pieces. “They don’t show any of the color or the relief but what they do show is the sizing,” Morgan noted. “We went through several generations of cold decals adjusting the bandwidth,” he added. Once the bandwidth had been approved, “proofing decals” were used to make several generations of physical samples showing what the final pieces would look like, including color and correctly sized presidential seals. One piece held a particular intrigue for the team. “The individual tureen took us a year to make because it was a new shape,” Morgan said. “One of our teams was tasked
An 11-piece set Each setting in the new presidential china service is comprised of 11 pieces. These include the largest item in the set, the service or “charger” plate, a pasta/lobster bowl, a salad plate, two identical plates, one referred to as a fish plate and the other used as a liner plate for the pasta/lobster bowl, a dinner plate, a dessert plate, and a tea/coffee cup and saucer. Rounding out the set are two items unique to all prior presidential china services, a covered individual tureen and its liner plate. White House Executive Chef Cristeta Comerford had hoped to add soup, small entrees, ice-cream desserts, and possibly a few culinary surprises to state dinner menus but felt there was no proper way of serving these items. After consultations with First Lady Michelle Obama it was decided to add the tureen to the setting. The design for the service came from the mind of Smith, whom the Obamas selected to redecorate the White House. The First Lady provided her input and approval throughout the process. White House curator William Allman worked with the team providing historical background to the pieces. Comerford did the same from a kitchen perspective. At a previewing of the service the day prior to the state dinner, Allman said, “Mrs. Obama’s main goal was to create a modern service that is completely compatible and interchangeable and usable with all the historic china services.” There were a few departures, however, from traditional settings with the hope of adding a contemporary flair to the setting. The First Lady hoped to move away from the primary colors of red, green, blue, and yellow that have been used for recent state services. Most of the new pieces have a narrow band of greenish blue along the perimeter which Michelle Obama named “Kailua Blue” after the color of the Hawaiian waters found in the president’s home state. Allman referred to the color as both modern and fresh, one which had not been seen before in presidential china. Each item containing the new color is further edged in a thin gold pattern. Exceptions to the Kailua Blue banding are the service plate, which has a wide band of matte gold around its perimeter, and the dinner plate, white with a thin gold banding COUPON
A complicated process As one might imagine, there is a bit more that goes into producing a china service for the White House than running to Target and buying a set of melamine plates off the shelf. Nor is the process an overnight task. Planning for the Obama service began in 2011. It was designer Smith who eventually chose Pickard to produce the settings, making them the first Illinois company to be so honored. “(White House interior designer Michael S. Smith) kind of kicked the tires a bit. We were asked a series of questions about our capabilities, particularly if we could make new shapes for them. That was critical,” recalled Andrew Morgan of the selection process, which began in 2012. That Smith should select Pickard China to produce the presidential setting is no great surprise. The company is no stranger to the higher echelons of government and had worked with the White House before. The State Department chose Pickard to manufacture the official china service used by U.S. embassies and diplomatic missions around the world. Pickard has also been commissioned to produce custom china for Air Force One, Blair House, Camp David, the George Bush Library, Queen Elizabeth, the King of Saudi Arabia, and the Hilton, Marriott, and Sheraton hotel chains. Additionally, they produced the first “informal” White House china setting for Laura Bush and her designer, Anna Weatherley. Smith’s office gave Pickard a design brief with an overview of what was desired in the setting. It may be no surprise that the early stages of development took place digitally using such software as Adobe’s Illustrator and Photoshop. “We could superimpose images on pictures of our ware. We went through multiple rounds of digital editing in order to come up with the right look,” said Morgan. “The color was very specific and that had been assigned by Michael Smith.” Creating the new color was only one of the considerations facing Morgan and his team, however. “The one area we spent the most time focusing on was the gold edge,” explained Morgan while holding one of the White House plates. “We looked at some of the past border patterns we had used and eventually chose an antique Pickard pattern that was acid etched. It’s a very small part of the design but unique to Pickard.”
to work on the piece. They would come in early each day on their own time, anxious to see the test piece coming off the kiln. We went through trial after trial after trial to get it right. It was interesting to see all of the care and the pride that went into that piece. I think it is one of the signature pieces of this china set.” Three final proof sets of each item in the service were eventually created. Each was approved and initialed by Smith, Allman, and Morgan, with one of the proof sets going to each. The proof set then becomes the standard set upon which production settings are based. “If there is ever any question on a reorder not being correct, you’d pull out your ‘standards’ piece and compare it to the new piece. We guarantee each piece to match a proof standard,” Morgan said. Pickard employees produced a total of 320 place settings for the White House consisting of 3,520 pieces at a cost of $367,258. The entire order was paid for through a donation from the White House Endowment Trust, administered by the White House Historical Association.
