It’s Elsa, the albino raccoon JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Adam Ring gently holds a rare albino raccoon, thought to be about three-weeks old, at the A-Action Pest Control offices, 487 Orchard St., in Antioch, on Wednesday, May 13. According to Ring, owner of A-Action, the company removed the albino kit along with its mother and two siblings from a client’s attic. The animals were subsequently placed in the hands of a licensed veterinarian who is also a registered Illinois DNR wildlife rehabilitator. After a six-week rehab period, a decision will be made as to whether the raccoon family will be able to survive in the wild. Another option would be to place the animals in the care of a wildlife preservation organization, if one can be found. Ring’s daughter named the albino baby Elsa after the Snow Queen in the movie “Frozen.” Inset: Elsa is shown with her brother, who has normal coloring.

First Fire Protection District 1 member Matt Tabar encouraged the Antioch area Joint Safety Committee to move forward with steps toward the consolidation of the district and the Antioch Fire Department at a May 13 meeting. Tabar chairs that committee and reminded members that both the village and township had signed on to a vision statement that has a goal of a consolidated department. Since the fire district would annex the village emergency services department, village residents could see a referendum regarding funding for that as early as March 2016. One constant concern expressed by village representatives on the Joint Safety Committee is the need for village representation on the fire district committee. Fire protection district attorney Dan Venturi said, “After a consolidation, those village boundaries disappear because all will be part of the fire district.”

When presented with a possible timeline for the consolidation, Antioch Village Administrator Jim Keim pointed out that the village is in a tenuous financial situation. The First Fire Protection District taxes separately for its service, but the village takes the $750,000 it spends on fire service from the general fund. Antioch Township Trustee Peter Grant asked if the village could lower its tax rate and do a dollar-for-dollar exchange for the $750,000. “Our revenue for fire service is not strictly from property taxes,” Keim explained. “We also have revenue from income and sales tax. Those amounts can fluctuate.” Village officials, including Mayor Larry Hanson and village attorney Robert Long all agreed that a consolidation would mean increased taxes for village residents. While Tabar encouraged the group to consider moving
