Attempted murder The Lake County Sheriff’s Department responded to a reported stabbing Jan. 9 at the Century Theater, 21600 W. Field Parkway in Deer Park, Jan. 9. According to a press release from the Sheriff’s Office, the call came in at about 8:45 p.m. and deputies found the victim, Katherine M. King, 24, of Vernon Hills, suffering from numerous stab wounds. She was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where she was treated for at least 20 Daniel J. Dion stab wounds, lacerations to her face and neck as well as both lungs being punctured. King is in the intensive care unit in critical condition. The offender, Daniel J. Dion, 18, of Des Plaines, was located a short time later and was treated for cuts to his hands at Advocate Good

Shepherd Hospital. Dion was later transported to the LCSO Criminal Investigations Division where he was interviewed and confessed to attacking King while inside her vehicle in the parking lot of the theater. The preliminary investigation indicates Dion met with King under the ruse that they would be going to a movie together, according to the press release. Dion then attacked King inside her vehicle while in the parking lot of the Century Theater. King was able to escape and run into the lobby of the theater for help. Dion told Sheriff’s Office detectives that he woke up in the morning with the intent to kill King because she annoyed him. Dion was charged with attempted murder, aggravated battery with a deadly weapon, aggravated battery great bodily harm and aggravated battery on a public way. Dion is being held in the Lake County Jail with no bond. Dion’s next court date is scheduled for Feb. 2 at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom C-202.

Selfish son puts elderly mother at risk

Dear W.C., Can you please help my friend? She is a senior citizen who I feel is being taken advantage of by her son. He stays at her apartment without helping to pay rent or utilities. He eats her food and then leaves her with nothing. She is on a very small fixed income but her son has no problem taking what little she has. I worry when he takes her car without her permission to go out to bars. I hear him come home drunk as my friend lives in the apartment down the hall from me.

By

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

He is loud and I hear him shouting at his mother. The management has already told him he is no longer welcome in our apartment complex but he does not care. They are now threatening to terminate her lease. I don’t know what to do. Is there anything you could do to help my friend? Worried Neighbor

Dear Readers, As you all know I get very upset when I hear of any of our fellow creations being taken advantage of or mistreated. I especially get disturbed when I hear it is a senior citizen, a child or the handicapped, those that cannot fend for themselves. When there is alcohol or drugs involved it always makes the situation worse. I called the concerned friend to set up a time when we could plan an intervention. She was excited to hear from me and told me her friend had been praying for help knowing if she lost her senior citizen

housing she would have nowhere else to go. The friend agreed to meet me at the door of the secure apartment building so I could knock on the door of the senior woman’s apartment. The door was opened by a senior woman that looked to be in her late 70s. When she saw her friend standing next to me she anxiously welcomed us in. Once we were seated at a small table in the even smaller apartment I pulled out her friend’s letter and read it aloud. The elderly woman looked ashamed and had tears in her eyes. I told

her, “There is nothing to be ashamed of. This is not your fault.” The woman wiped her eyes and began to share with me all the troubles she had been having with her adult son. “I don’t know what has happened to him. He used to be such a good son but now all he does is take whatever he can from me,” she said. I listened as she shared all she had been through over the past several months. The elderly, widowed woman went into detail about her sons drinking, and how his personality completely

changed when he drank. He would swear at her, push her aside, take her purse against her will, and take what little money she had in her purse and her car keys. When she told him “no” he would yell at her, “Shut up.” “When I told him to keep his voice down so he would not disturb my neighbors he would get louder and swear and yell,” she said. “I told him several times I would not have enough to pay my utilities because he was taking what little I had but he would ignore me. When I started hiding my money

Her rent and utilities were

both overdue. I told the woman we would help her with these late bills as long as we were able to finally stand up to her abusive son and tell him he would no longer be taking anything from his mother. I asked for the son’s cell phone number and his mother listened as I talked to him. After I gave him a lengthy introduction I asked if he was available to meet me at his mother’s. He hesitated and told me no. I confronted him with the details of the ongoing abuse, as told to me by the neighbors, the management and his own mother. He was very quiet. I informed him he would no longer be welcome to use his mother’s apartment as a drunken crash pad, use her gas and damage her car, eat her food and all the other abuse he had been doing to his mother. The woman looked frightened as I spoke with him on the phone. I told him, “I and others, including the authorities,

will be checking on his mother several times a day. If your abuse happens one more time I will make sure you are prosecuted.” The son was silent until I was done. I asked him if he would be willing to enter a rehabilitation program. He answered, “I am not ready for any program. Don’t worry I won’t be bothering my Mom anymore,” and hung up the phone. We helped this woman to pay her overdue rent and utilities. We also provided food, gas for her car and a much-needed repair to her brakes. I and others checked in on her several times a day for weeks. When I asked if she had heard from her son she said she had not. She was saddened by this but knew her son needed to deal with his addiction before he was in her life again. I spoke to the friend that had requested our assistance for her friend and she confirmed the son had not been to his mother’s apartment. The woman was again

helping her neighbors with rides to the doctor or grocery store now that her son was not taking her car and her gas. Several months later when I spoke to her, she was happy to share her son had called her and finally decided he needed some help. He was attending meetings almost daily to help with his addictions and had a change of heart. The woman even tearfully shared her son had apologized several times for his behavior. I made a special appointment to see the son before he actually saw his mother. To my surprise he

was very open and actually thanked me. God bless everyone, W.C./Sal Please help: Make checks payable to: The Time Is Now to Help, P.O. Box 1, Lake Geneva, WI 53147. Holiday crackdown results in three drunken driving arrests 158 citations issued by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Results are in from the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over holiday crackdown on drunk drivers. During the holiday season, reducing the deadly dangers from drunk drivers was a top priority as the Lake County Sheriff’s Office was out in force to arrest those who put themselves and others on the road at risk. From Dec. 19 to Jan. 4 the

Lake County Sheriff’s Office made three drunken driving arrests. In addition, 60 seat belt citations were issued. Ninety-five other citations were also issued during the crackdown. “Drunk driving is deadly and people can get too wrapped up in the excitement of the holidays and make some seriously bad decisions,” Lake County Sheriff

Mark Curran said. “The bottom line is if you have been drinking alcohol, you don’t belong behind the wheel. Never drink and drive.” The recent law enforcement crackdown was funded by federal traffic safety funds through the Illinois Department of Transportation and is part of the Drive Sober or Get Pulled Over and Click It or Ticket campaigns.

Even during the best times, life is not meant to be perfect. I’ve discovered over the years that good can be great and so-so might be the best you’re going to get, depending on the day. But even when it’s two steps forward, one step back, you are making the effort and that counts for something – whether you are monogrammed, tattered or, like most of us, somewhere in between. And when you have friends and family who love you, tatters and all, it begins to make sense and you understand there’s no need to hide behind a monogram. Not really. Even though I still do sometimes. But I’m working on it. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She welcomes having readers follow her column on the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

They sat indiscriminately on the clearance rack marked down like a thousand percent from their initial price. Hand towels. Not your everyday, ordinary, run-of-the-mill hand towels. These happened to be emblazoned with the letter “P” as in the first letter of my last name. I contemplated my good fortune for a millisecond before tossing a pair in my cart. A couple bucks later, I returned home with monogrammed towels. Monogrammed towels! I figured I’d finally hit the big time. Never mind they cost like a dollar apiece. It’s not everyday you find yourself confronted with the possibility of a monogram. A monogram practically sings your name – at least the first letter of it. Monograms are snazzy and jazzy and they look like they were made just for you – or for someone who shares your initials. I hung them in the bathroom and waited for company to come over. Meanwhile, I took the old, worn and tattered towels that had previously hung in the bathroom and tossed them in the back of a cupboard. No need for friends, family or visiting strangers to witness our tatters. I took another proud look at my new monograms and the metaphor hit me: People are like towels. (Which I realize is actually a simile, but bear with me here.) We display our monograms for the world to see and hide the tatters in places where they aren’t as likely to be noticed. Whether it’s a monogram on a towel, a logo on a purse, a label on the back of jeans or a brand name on the back of a vehicle, we work hard to show only our best side when the world’s camera comes in for our close-up.

Equine-assisted therapy part of Veterans’ PTSD recovery al therapists have long appreciated the value of using horses to help Veterans coping with mental and physical health challenges and have been bringing longterm care residents, as well as mental health patients, to BraveHearts for the past seven years, said Suzanne Brunner, PTSD recreational therapist at Lovell FHCC. “It fills them with a sense of pride that ‘I did it,’ and a sense of accomplishment they get out of being able to do this, to get on a horse,” Brunner said. “Often they haven’t done it before, or they rode when they were a child, and it was something that got left behind. Being on this very powerful animal, or even just being around the horses, rekindles their sense of freedom.” Brunner accompanied seven PTSD patients of varying ages on a cool autumn night to BraveHearts, where they were met by instructors, certified therapists and trained volunteers. The Veterans broke into smaller groups; some inside to the stalls to tack up the horses, others to outside corrals for activities that included getting in the ring to handle a formerly wild mustang.

While Motley waited for his turn to drive the carriage, he told a story about what he thought his life was going to be. “I wanted to make the Army a career,” he said. “I loved the Army. I felt like a superhero in uniform.” Instead of retiring from the Army, he had to get out in 2012 after a decade of service and seek treatment for PTSD. Motley said his mental health therapist recommended Lovell FHCC’s PTSD treatment program. “I did my research, and talked it over with my family before coming here,” he said. Motley was not the only one in the group a long way from home. Dallas resident and Army Veteran Mitchell Reno also expressed gratitude for the chance to go to BraveHearts and praised the treatment he received at Lovell FHCC. “This is an incredible PTSD program,” said Reno, who served four years in the infantry. He also spent 10 months at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center in Maryland after he was injured in combat. The experienced rider said being back in the saddle reminded him of good times of riding in Texas. Army Veteran Cecil Stroud stood in awe in a small paddock with BraveHearts Director of Operations Paddy McKevitt, who demonstrated free lunging and natural horsemanship with a spirited mustang before leaving the enclosure to allow Stroud a try. Under McKevitt’s instruction, Stroud slowly approached the horse and used body language to successfully direct it to follow him around the ring. The veterans leaned on the fence and listened intently as McKevitt explained that horses, being animals of prey, seek out a leader in the herd to follow. Horses have an uncanny ability to sense humans’ moods, McKevitt said, and will trust and respond to a confident, but passive, human leader. “I loved it,” Stroud said. “It was the absolute best thing to date that I’ve done in the program.” Veteran Chris Lerch agreed with Stroud that

Afghanistan and Iraq Army Veteran Tyrone Motley relaxed into the carriage seat, took the reins and so skillfully steered the horse around the ring that onlookers couldn’t believe it was his first time. “It was awesome,” said Motley, beaming after his turn at carriage driving at BraveHearts Therapeutic Riding & Educational Center in Harvard, Ill. “I was comfortable and confident; it was fun.” Driving a carriage, and later that night riding a horse for the first time, were steps toward recovery for the Indianapolis resident, who traveled far from home to seek treatment at Lovell FHCC in North Chicago, Ill., for post-traumatic stress disorder. The therapeutic riding session at BraveHearts was just one part of a 35-day residential treatment program designed to help Veterans like Motley recover and get back to living life fully. “I’m getting skills so I can go out by myself in a crowd,” Motley said. “I’m learning breathing and coping skills so I can transition successfully back into being a civilian.” Lovell FHCC recreation-

working with the mustang topped his experiences in the PTSD program. “The way the horse followed you and did what you said was amazing,” said Lerch, who deployed to Iraq twice in six years with the Marine Corps. “This is great. I’m really glad to be here. These people are awesome,” Lerch said, referring to BraveHearts staff and volunteers. Brunner brings Lovell FHCC PTSD patients to BraveHearts twice a month. She said it is personally rewarding and satisfying to see their progress. “Teaching them to drive the carriage, to ride, showing them how to bond with these magnificent animals, they learn it’s not physical power that is important but trust… This helps them get back to who they are as individuals, beyond the PTSD,” Brunner said. Recreational therapists also bring Lovell FHCC Community Living Center residents, many with substantial physical limitations, to BraveHearts for equine-assisted therapy. As outlined in a BraveHearts pamphlet, the

stable has a range of adaptive equipment. Patients unable to use their hands can use equipment that allows them to control horses with their wrists. Patients unable to walk are helped into the saddle using a special lift apparatus – the Sure Hands Lift. Once they are in the saddle, the movement of the horse’s gait is similar to a human’s walking motion and strengthens core muscle groups. Brunner has only the highest praise for BraveHearts, which serves hundreds of veterans a year. “The staff here have been very excited about working with our patients and have accommodated us completely, whether it’s working with us for scheduling, or giving us access to their kitchens so we can hold cookouts, and being willing to come to North Chicago to talk to our staff,” Brunner said. BraveHearts is aligned with PATH International (Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship) Equine Services for Heroes, an organization that facilitates collaboration between

VA medical centers and PATH International member centers, instructors and therapists to provide equine-assisted therapies and activities to Veterans. BraveHearts has developed a longstanding relationship with several Department of Veterans Affairs Medical facilities, including the Milwaukee VAMC and Jesse Brown VAMC and Hines VA Hospital in Chicago. With the help of grant money, BraveHearts serves Veterans free of charge. Veterans are allowed to return to the stable as often as they wish to ride and/or take care of the horses. For Motley, the outing to BraveHearts was therapeutic because of what the experience lacked: stress. “It was relaxing … I wasn’t scared,” Motley said. In place of panic, Motley said he felt pleased and proud. Before the night was over, he borrowed a smart phone to share with his 13-year-old daughter smiling photos of himself astride a horse. Patients desiring information on Lovell FHCC’s PTSD treatment programs may contact the Mental Health Clinic at (224) 610-3744.

She was transported to Northwest Community Hospital in Arlington Heights where she was treated Daniel J. Dion for at least 20 stab wounds, lacerations to her face and neck as well as both lungs being punctured.

2 at 1:30 p.m. in courtroom C-202.

utility room near the hot-water tank or clothes washer. Unfreezing pipes If the pipes do freeze up, use a hair dryer set on low, heat lamp or light bulb to gradually warm and thaw the frozen pipe. Too much heat in one spot, however, can burst the pipe, so be sure heat is evenly distributed over a large area of the pipe. Be extremely cautious when using any electrical appliance to thaw a pipe. The appliance could become wet, increasing your danger of electrocution. Do not use a blowtorch or any type of flame to thaw a frozen line. In addition to the danger of fire, extreme heat could thaw the pipe too rapidly, causing it to burst and resulting in potential injury. Rubbing the pipes with warm damp rags may slowly thaw the line, as well. If the water is off for an extended period of time, turn off the gas to the hot water heater. If it’s not possible to locate the freeze and no water is coming out of any tap, there is a chance the service line or meter is frozen. If the service line to the home is frozen a plumber may need to be called. For any questions regarding frozen pipes or other utility issues, call the Sewer and Water Department weekdays from 7 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at (847) 587-3506. For emergencies, call (847) 587-3100.

With temperatures venturing into the sub-zero range recently, the Fox Lake Sewer and Water Department reminds residents to take precautions to prevent frozen plumbing. Tips to keep things operating smoothly include: • Set the thermostat at 55 degrees or higher; • Insulate pipes that are prone to freezing, such as those near an outside wall, in unheated areas of the home, or that are exposed, such as outside spigots. In an emergency, several layers of newspapers or rags can be used for temporary insulation; • Keep the cover to the water meter box securely in place to prevent the meter from freezing during cold periods; • Avoid cold drafts by the water meter or exposed pipes by replacing broken windows, caulking holes in foundations and window frames; • In extremely cold weather, leave cabinet doors under sinks open to keep warm air circulating; • When temperatures are severely cold, run the cold-water faucet at a minimal rate to maintain water movement through your piping to prevent freezing; and • Locate the home’s main valve so the water can be temporarily shut off if a line does break. The master valve is typically located where the water line from the meter enters the house. This can be in the crawl space under your house or in the

Rudolph display extended Because of public demand and the unseasonably cold weather, the McHenry County Historical Society and Museum is extending its Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer display another week until Jan. 16. Christmas aficionado Dave Harms is once again spearheading the annual display, which marks the 75th anniversary of Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer’s birth, courtesy of author Robert L. May, and the 50th anniversary of the airing of the Rankin/Bass television special. Montgomery Ward directed its department store marketing department to create an original Christmas story to supplant the more expensive coloring books the retailer had given away to kids in the past. Robert L. May got the job and his efforts were an immediate hit. More than 2 million storybooks were given out to Wards’ customers in 1939 alone. A decade later May’s brotherin-law, songwriter Johnny Marks (who also penned “Rockin Around the Christmas Tree,” “Holly Jolly Christmas” and “Silver and Gold”) put the story to music. Harms said it has been recorded by more than 400 artists – led by the “original singing cowboy” Gene Autry. Harms attributed Rudolph’s popularity to his association with Santa Claus – everyone’s favorite jolly ol’ elf. Also, the Horatio Alger element to the story – downtrodden deer makes good – struck a chord with many, Harms said. And there was the added push provided Autry and big record label – Columbia – that released the song. By the time Max Fleischer cre-

ated his colorized, seven and a half minute Rudolph cartoon in 1948, the red-nosed reindeer’s place in history was secure. Ironically, it has outlasted the company that created it. “I think it’s a combination of all those things. You had World War II and the Depression, and here is this uplifting song,” Harms said. “It’s all part of our social fabric.” Harms, 63, of Crystal Lake, has been a devotee of Christmas his entire life. But his passion became a hobby after he joined the Golden Glow of Christmas Past, a worldwide club for collectors of antique Christmas items, more than 30 years ago. Today, he wouldn’t even hazard a guess how many pieces of Rudolph-related memorabilia he owns. The exhibit features everything from irons to shirts, blankets to furniture; a magnetic dartboard and a West German metal top. Visitors also can view a rare papier-mache Rudolph head, furniture, a wooden riding stick and a rare children’s ride also will greet visitors. For a donation to the Society, bring your camera and take a picture seated on or standing by a motorized, vintage Rudolph, coin-operated ride. Introduced in 1953 by the Exhibit Supply Co. of Chicago, Harms said it no doubt sat just inside or outside a Ward’s department store – rocking back and forth with its nose blinking. Rides cost 10 cents. The display is open from 1 to 4 p.m. Tuesday through Friday. If you are unable to attend during those hours and wish to schedule a special viewing, contact the museum at (815) 923-2267.

Tutoring scheduling is flexible to meet people’s busy schedules, including those who are retired or working full time. “People looking to make a difference in the life of an Adult Education student should come to an orienta-

tion session to learn about this rewarding opportunity,” said Marie Day, coordinator of Adult Ed and Literary Support Services. Additional information sessions are offered at 6:30 p.m. March 4 and at 9 a.m. March 7. For more information or to register for an orientation or training session, call Marie Day at (815) 4558542. The college is located at 8900 Highway 14m Crystal Lake. The project was made possible in part by a grant awarded by the Illinois State Library, a Division of the Office of Secretary of State, using state funds designated for literacy.
