Sealing the ol’ mill
Signs of struggle noted at crime scene

Buttrick’s Mill gets a coat of weather sealant applied in time to take on the upcoming winter, at Depot Street and Cunningham Drive on Saturday in Antioch. Volunteers from the Chain of Lakes Community Bible Church, NorthBridge Church, CrossView Church, Hope Community Church took on the task of applying the weatherproofing. The current incarnation of the mill was built in 1976. It is a replica of the original mill, which stood a few hundred feet downstream. The mill, located at the south end of Gage Brothers Park, is one of Antioch’s most photographed landmarks.

Fox Lake Police Lt. Joseph Gliniewicz was shot and killed with his own weapon following what appeared to be a struggle, investigators in the case said Thursday. Authorities are continuing to investigate the case as a homicide, Commander George Filenko of the Lake County Major Crimes Task Force told those gathered for a press conference in Fox Lake last week. “There were indications there was a struggle at the crime scene,” Filenko said, however, he did not expound on what those indications were. Gliniewicz, a 30-year veteran of the department, was shot twice – the first shot hitting his protective vest at his side and the second, fatal shot, piercing his upper left chest, Filenko said. The first shot was deemed incapacitating by forensic experts investigating the case, he said. “It would be similar to that of a sledgehammer hitting you in the side,” Filenko said. Gliniewicz, 52, died while on duty early Sept. 1. According to the dispatch, Gliniewicz radioed in at 7:52 a.m. on the morning of his death to say he was pursuing three males – two white, one black – who appeared to be acting suspicious near the in-
tersection of Highway 12 and Sayton Road in Fox Lake. The area where the shooting took place is described as desolate with empty fields and abandoned buildings. Gliniewicz was pursing the three men on foot when d i sp a t c h e r s lost contact Lt. Joseph with him. His body Gliniewicz was found by responding officers just after 8 a.m. The two responding officers immediately began to search for the suspects. Gliniewicz’s service pistol was missing when he was found. The firearm, which had been fired, was recovered near the scene two days later. A manhunt was launched shortly after Gliniewicz’s body was discovered and the effort utilized over 400 additional police focusing on an area of approximately two square miles. The search, which included helicopters and military style equipment, concluded over 14 hours later. The suspects in the case remained at large as of early this week.

Text-based crisis line expanded in county LEAD, a Lake Forest-based nonprofit, is expanding its 24/7 anonymous Text-a-Tip program to include all communities in Lake County. After successfully launching in the Lake Forest/Lake Bluff area the system has been extended to include towns along the North Shore and recently became available in McHenry County. Text-A-Tip provides a 24/7 anonymous text-communication system to youth needing immediate mental health assistance for themselves or a friend. Members of the community can send a text message to a dedicated number and receive an immediate response from a licensed clinician while remaining anonymous. The anonymity makes it a comfortable place for students to share and provides a safe outlet for voicing concerns about themselves and others. “Thanks to the efforts of LEAD, Text-A-Tip has been hugely successful in offering youth an innovative way to seek help,” said Michael G. Nerheim, Lake County State’s Attorney. “I am excited to bring this program to the entire county and provide the people of Lake County a vehicle by which they can get support anonymously. This will, without a doubt, save lives.” “Text-A-Tip was created to give young people an outlet for anonymous, immediate help for themselves or their friends,” said Andy Duran, executive director of LEAD. “Whether struggling with depression, drug or alcohol abuse, bullying or challenging family issues, we allow them to reach out for help using their preferred method of communication – text messaging.” How It Works: Each community receives a unique ID which routes messages, in real-time, to a local on-call response team. All messages are sent through an off-
site-cloaking server that keeps the communication completely anonymous. Anyone in Lake County wishing to use the system will simply text the phrase “LAKECO” to 274637. The Response Team for Lake County consists of licensed/certified mental health professionals from Barrington Behavioral Health and Wellness who are on-call 24/7 to respond to messages. On-call clinicians from both their Barrington and Lake Zurich offices are responsible for responding appropriately to each communication and for following up whenever necessary. In the case of a life-threatening condition or criminal activity, emergency
responders will be notified. LEAD is proud to partner with the Lake County Health Department/Community Health Center, Lake County Opioid Initiative, Lake County Regional Office of Education, Barrington Behavioral Health and Wellness and The Child, Adolescent and Family Recovery Center to bring this initiative to the whole of Lake County. Carol Calabresa, Lake County Board Vice-Chair, was responsible for securing funding for the expansion of Text-A-Tip into Lake County through the Lake County Board. For more information, visit www.leadingefforts.org or call (847) 295-9075.
County offers flu shots The Lake County Health Department Community Health Center is encouraging residents to get a flu shot this fall. While anyone 6 months of age or older can receive the shot, the nasal spray vaccine is for healthy persons 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant. A high-dose vaccine is available for the elderly and a vaccine manufactured without the use of eggs is available
for those with egg allergies. The cost of the flu vaccine for people 18 years of age and younger is covered by All Kids and Medicaid. Medicaid covers the vaccine cost for some adults and Medicare Part B covers the cost of the flu vaccine for all cardholders. For more specific information visit: http://health.lakecountyil.gov or contact the Health Department at (847) 377-8470.

On Sunday at 8:30 p.m., six World War II and 17 Korean War veterans are coming home from their Lake County Honor Flight trip to Washington D.C. The veterans will be welcomed by a crowd of family, friends and loved ones at the North Chicago Veterans Memorial, 1801 Sheridan Road, North Chicago. The welcome home ceremony is open to the public and local residents are encouraged to attend. Byron Kinney, a B-29 pilot who flew a POW rescue mission at the end of WWII to reach Louis Zamperini’s camp in Japan, will be one of the many coming home on the Honor Flight. The saga of Zamperini, a 1936 Olympian, was captured in Laura Hillenbrand’s best-selling book “Unbroken” and film by the same name. “A half dozen friends of mine have already been on an Honor Flight and return with high compliments on their experience,” Kinney said. “Every detail is taken care of to honor each veteran and make their trip a highly memorable event. Seeing the great memorials built by a grateful nation to honor the military service and sacrifice of millions is a huge honor.” In addition, State Rep. Rita Mayfield will be joining the Honor Flight crew.

There are many families who may be late to register. These will become part of a small selection of gifts for parents to choose from for their children. These gifts can be brought to the Center anytime up to Dec. 21, though earlier in the month is better. For a sponsor application visit the Center in person at

The Sharing Center – western Kenosha County’s resource center and food pantry – is currently seeking sponsors to “adopt” children this holiday season. Secret Shoppers and Center children are paired anonymously, with shoppers providing a child’s most basic identified needs, and a gift. Suggested items to consider in a sponsorship include two articles of clothing and an educational gift for each child. Sponsored children gifts should be delivered no later than Dec. 1. Be sure to

Rules to follow Most dog parks have regulations that must be followed for the safety and well being of pets and their owners. All dogs must have a current license from their municipality and be up to date on the required vaccines. Annual dog tags for the parks can be purchased by county residents for $20. Non-residents pay $25 or visitors may pay a daily fee. Owners are asked to keep dogs on the leash until they are within the fenced-in area of the park. Leashes should be removed once inside the park as leashed dogs tend to become aggressive when there are other dogs running loose. Certain dogs do not do well in a dog park. Dogs that are not social and friendly are not allowed in the dog parks for their safety and the safety of the other dogs and owners in

There was a time when going to the park meant taking your children out to play. Today, however, it isn’t only children meeting up with friends in the park, it is often the family dogs that have a play date in the park. There are parks with playgrounds for children and now there are parks with playgrounds especially for dogs. Dog parks are a relatively recent addition and one of the fastest growing segments of city and county parks. Exercise is important for humans to maintain a healthy body and so it is with dogs. While most dogs lead a relatively inactive life while families are busy with work and school they still need exercise and socialization to remain healthy. A visit to the dog park allows them to have off-leash exercise in a controlled environment. On a recent Monday morning, I visited a local dog park to see firsthand if people really take advantage of having a special park for their dogs. Surprisingly at 10 a.m. the Warren Close Dog Park in Twin Lakes had several dogs making themselves at home as they ran up and down the hill and around the fenced-in enclosure. A group of four dogs with two owners were leaving as

the area. Excessive barking is also prohibited and will result in the owner being asked to remove the dog from the park. Aggressive dogs and those that cannot be controlled by their owner are not allowed. Toys such as Frisbees and balls are allowed but should be taken home after each visit. It is recommended that people bring water for their pets, especially on hot days. No food, smoking, alcoholic beverages, glass containers, strollers, or bicycles are allowed inside the park. Owners are also responsible for cleaning any waste left by your pet. Puppies under the age of four months or female dogs in heat are not allowed in the parks. Prior to a first visit to a dog park, people may want to stop by the park without their pet. It will give them time to get the lay of the land and watch how the animals interact. Owners can then decide if their dogs have the right temperament to play well with others. Here are the off-leash dog parks in the Kenosha area. The first three listed are supported by the county and are maintained by donations and the annual fee. The last two are supported by the city of Kenosha and the Village of Pleasant Prairie.

I arrived, to be replaced by a single owner with her dog and two owners with three dogs between them. The dogs were anxious to pass through the double entry and have their leashes removed. They immediately began to rush up and down the hills of the park, barking and chasing each other in a friendly, playful way. Geri Wilson and Morgan James of Genoa City meet at the park several times a week with their dogs Charlie, Bella, and Marla. “It is great for the dogs,” Wilson said. “They enjoy being let loose off their leashes and (being) able to run.” In addition to exercise for the dog, playing with them in open space is good bonding for owners and dogs Wilson and James said.

The tools of success Gateway donations boost tech ed. programs
staff writer
A seminar that Gateway Technical College hosted in July has proven beneficial for area high schools. Kenosha, Westosha Central and Wilmot high schools all had representatives at the “train-the-trainer” event July 22 and 23, which trained technical education teachers at all three schools in Snapon torque instruments used in a variety of industries. Burlington, Waterford Union and Union Grove Union and several other area high schools participated as well. Following the completion of the program, each high school received more than $700 in tools plus other donations from Gateway to help with technical education. “They’re awesome,” said Burlington High School teacher Nick Schilleman, adding that last year Gateway donated about $4,000 total in tools. “For the students, it gives them a lot of
tools we otherwise wouldn’t be able to afford.” This year, the schools got three electronic torque wrenches, a $1,000 subscription to Shopkeypro.com – a diagnostic website – and a handful of shop supplies and tools. Schilleman said he has more than 100 students in his automobile classes at BHS. Gateway instructor Matt Janisin, said the in-depth training helps both instructors and students by giving new equipment and life to curriculums at the schools. “Empowering instructors with challenging new content can recharge a teacher’s batteries and give them something they are excited to share with their students – and not just something else to teach,” Janisin said. “The instructor sets the tone in the classroom. If they are excited, so too will the students.” Other area teachers involved included Nick Baldwin of Union Grove and Jake Ruff at Waterford. The
session was the same certification training Gateway has offered to instructors since 2008. Ruff said that Waterford typically offers three automotive classes a year, with an average of about 20-plus kids. “It’s really nice, just because Matt Janisin … he understands where we’re coming from as instructors,” explained Ruff, adding that Janisin has taught at the high school level. “He really understands what’s good for us.” Ruff stressed that the donations by Gateway help programs that wouldn’t otherwise be able to purchase the equipment. “We can use them, and the kids see Gateway wants to help us out,” Ruff said. Baldwin said, “Gateway has given us the ability to keep up with the changing times in automotive repair.” “They have kept us abreast of the new technology,” Baldwin said.
Salem looks at TIF, suspending license By Christopher Rainey Correspondent
A special meeting of the Salem Town Board Sept. 21 addressed two different but potentially important topics. The Town Board outlined the money involved in creating Tax Incremental Finance District No. 1 – which will encompass the town business park – and also addressed a planned Oct. 12 open session meeting regarding the possible revocation of the liquor license for JP Liquor & Foods. Ehlers & Associates, a financial planning consultant, stated that there would be approximately $6 million borrowed for the TIF at an interest rate that is believed to be less than 2.25 percent. There will be the use of an
anticipation note, which allows for a short three-year obligation with a single maturing payment before the long term refinancing. Ehlers & Associates representatives explained that option would allow for a better assessment of the TIF before making a long-term financial decision. The current estimates are $700,000 less than what was initially projected. The Town Board directed Ehlers & Associates to collect and present the bids on Oct. 19. Liquor license debate JP Liquor & Foods was given multiple citations, which led to the business exceeding the demerit limit within a 12-month time
frame. JP Liquor & Foods did not go to court in relation to those citations, and instead decided to just pay them. The Town Board decided to request a representative of the business meet with officials on Oct. 12 to discuss the possible implications. Other matters The alternate entrance to the new Town Business Park that is being discussed will be named after Joe Meier, a long time Town Board Supervisor and school teacher. The road will be named Meier Parkway. Chairwoman Diann Tesar said this would be a great way to help honor and preserve his long Town of Salem commitment and legacy.
State installs warning device at intersection The Wisconsin Department of Transportation recently installed new warning signs with yellow flashing beacons. The device is to reduce crashes at a rural intersection in Kenosha County. The western intersection of Highways 50 and W – in the Town of Wheatland – has a history of severe crashes with northbound motorists not yielding the right of way to eastbound drivers. There will be two yellow warning signs for eastbound motorists on Highway 50 at the T-intersection. The message on the signs reads, “Watch for Entering Traffic.” Each sign will have two yellow beacons that will flash when traffic on County W is approaching or stopped at the intersection. Flashing signs like these with slightly different configurations and messages are being used throughout
the country in an effort to reduce the number of high speed T-bone crashes. These crashes often result in severe injuries and fatalities at locations like these with a free-flow mainline, and a side road controlled by stop signs. These flashing signs, or intersection conflict warning systems, are relatively low-
cost options that have the potential to prevent injuries and save lives. The Department of Transportation will continue to monitor the crashes at this intersection and at another proposed location in northern Wisconsin as it works toward a goal of zero traffic deaths in Wisconsin.
Wilmot School Board to fill vacant seat
The Wilmot Union High School District is currently seeking applicants to fill a vacant board position. Qualified applicants must establish residency in the district by Oct. 7, 2015, and be at least 18 years old. Applicants should send a letter of application to Daniel S. Kopp, District Administrator, Wilmot Union High School District, P.O. Box 8, Wilmot, WI 53192, no later than Oct. 14. Additionally, all applicants are asked to report to Room 180 of Wilmot High School at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 28, for a board meeting during which they will be interviewed by the members of the Board of Education.

Welcome reception set for Honor Flight vets and film by the same name. “I am thrilled to join Lake County Honor Flight on trip number five as a guardian. I’m sure this trip will have a great impact on me,” she said. “Our nation’s heroes are the very reason this country represents freedom across the globe. Traveling with our heroes is
an honor, and witnessing their smiles will forever resonate in my heart.” Attendees are encouraged to make posters, bring American flags and dress in red, white and blue. The ceremony will be held outdoors, rain or shine. The North Chicago Veterans Memorial is at the 1800 block of Sheridan Road in North Chicago, about one and a half miles north of Naval Station Great Lakes. Parking is available at the memorial site. “Thanks to the efforts of LEAD, Text-A-Tip has been hugely successful in offering
youth an innovative way to seek help,” said Michael G. All messages are sent through an offsite-cloaking server that keeps the communication completely anonymous.
In the case of a life-threatening condition or criminal activity, emergency responders will be notified. County offers flu shots The Lake County Health Department Community Health Center is encouraging residents to get a flu shot this fall. Last year, six deaths and 49 intensive care unit admissions were associated with complications brought on by influenza in Lake County. “Those six months of age or older should get a flu shot, especially children younger than 5, adults 65 years of age and older, and those with conditions such as asthma or diabetes,” said Tony Beltran, the Health Department’s Executive Director. “Influenza is a respiratory illness that is highly contagious and it can take a severe toll on an individual’s health, keeping
them away from work, school or recreational opportunities. “A flu shot not only protects you, but also those around you.” People with flu can spread it to others up to about six feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or talk. These droplets can land in the mouths or noses of people who are nearby or possibly be inhaled into the lungs. Less often, a person might also get the flu by touching a surface or object that has flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth or nose. The Health Department offers the following recommendations:
Roberts Road to close for roundabout construction The Lake County Division of Transportation will close Roberts Road to through traffic on Monday from Darrell Road to Highway 59. River Road will remain closed, north of Kelsey Road, to through traffic as part of this phase of construction. A new roundabout will be constructed during the closure, which will last approximately 20 days. When the road reopens, motorists will be driving through the new roundabout. The designated detour routes are: Roberts Road Detour Route: Roberts Road, to Darrell Road to Highway 176 to Highway 12 to Highway 59. River Road Detour Route: River Road to Kelsey Road to Highway 59. Local traffic will have access to residences and businesses within the closure area up to the intersection. For additional information regarding this project, visit www.riverroberts.com.
• The most important step in protection against the flu is getting an annual flu vaccine. • Take everyday preventive steps, such as staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. • If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others. The Health Department is offering the flu vaccine by appointment only at the Immunizations Clinic at 2303 Dodge Avenue in Waukegan. The flu vaccine is available through a needle or a nasal spray. While anyone 6 months of age or older can receive the shot, the nasal spray vaccine is for healthy persons 2 to 49 years of age who are not pregnant. A high-dose vaccine is available for the elderly and a vaccine manufactured without the use of eggs is available for those with egg allergies. The cost of the flu vaccine for people 18 years of age and younger is covered by All Kids and Medicaid. Medicaid covers the vaccine cost for some adults and Medicare Part B covers the cost of the flu vaccine for all cardholders. Public health nurse Floral Design Show set honored for TB work “I was just doing my job,” Stephenson said. “This is what I’ve been trained to do. We all pitched in” Susan Karras, Communicable Disease Coordinator for the Health Department and Stephenson’s supervisor, said, “Karen is a very experienced TB nurse and we’re lucky to have her. Karen and the CD staff were on top of what needed to be done every step of the way.” Tuberculosis is a reportable airborne bacterial disease, which, even though serious, is normally treatable with proper medication. Although contagious, TB is difficult to transmit and can only be spread when someone with an active case is coughing or sneezing. Symptoms of TB can mimic other illnesses and include weight loss, night
sweats, weakness and chronic coughing (which may or may not be tinged with blood). “In McHenry County we typically see several cases of TB each year. Although the number of cases in the United States is lower than in some other countries, the disease won’t be eradicated because of the mobile society in which we live,” said Michael Hill, Administrator for McHenry County Department of Health. McHenry County Department of Health conducts TB testing for county residents when it is necessary for their job or if an individual has been exposed to the disease. For more information about TB, call (815) 334-4500 or visit the Nursing - Communicable Disease section of the Health Department website (www.mcdh.info).
Third rabid bat found in county Health officials have confirmed a third rabid bat in McHenry County. According to Dr. Lisa Lembke, Veterinary Public Health Manager for the Health Department, there was no human exposure, however, two dogs were in contact with the bat. Because the dogs had received the rabies vaccine prior to exposure, they are quarantined at home. The Health Department reminds residents that vaccinating cats and dogs is their best protection against this deadly virus. McHenry County requires the rabies vaccine and registration for all dogs that are four months or older. Unvaccinated cats (even indoor cats) are susceptible if exposed to the rabies virus. Veterinarians can vaccinate dogs and cats as early as 12 weeks old. Re-vaccination is required every one to three years. The best way to avoid rabies is to avoid exposure. During the fall, many bats are migrating and others are looking for winter quarters, which may be in peoples’ attics. While bats have mainly beneficial effects,
with some species able to eat up to 600 insects in an hour, keeping bats out of your house is the best protection. Regularly inspect the exterior of your home for signs of small openings in the roof, siding or around doors and windows. Be sure your home is free of bats before sealing any holes. Consider contacting a professional. Bats sometimes get inside a house accidentally. If a bat finds its way into your house, it could spread rabies to your cat or dog. If your pet is not current on its rabies shot and it plays with or bites a bat, euthanizing or quarantining your pet in an approved kennel for six months may be necessary. Signs of a rabid bat include a bat that is active by day, found in a place where bats are not usually seen (such as in your home or on the lawn) or is unable to fly. To learn more about rabies prevention, visit the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) at www.cdc. gov/rabies/ or contact the MCDH Communicable Disease Program at (815) 334-4500.

on Saturday, Oct. 17, at its Crystal Lake facility, 100 N. Virginia St. Doors will open at 11 a.m. Do not bring animals that are in heat. All pets must be leashed or in carriers. Rabies vaccinations are $10 for one year or $25 for three years. Registration tags are required by law. Registration fees are separate and required at time of rabies vaccination. Discounts for senior residents apply and for pets who have been previously spayed or neutered when purchasing registration tags. Microchips are $15. A pet has a better chance of being reunited with its family if it has a microchip for quick identification and a current rabies vaccination record. Unlike dog tags and collars, which can fall off or be removed, microchips are a more permanent form of pet identification. Animal microchips are about the size of a grain of rice and are typically implanted just beneath the surface of the skin between the shoulder blades. The process is similar to receiving vaccination through a needle. Adoptions ($80) will also be available and include age-appropriate vaccinations, spay/neuter, FELV and FIV testing, microchip, heartworm and free first veterinarian visit at participating veterinarians. To view available pets, visit www. petfinder.com.

Karen Stephenson is the recipient of the 2015 Tuberculosis Service Award, presented in Springfield in September by the Illinois Council on Tuberculosis. Awarded annually, this achievement is given to an individual exemplifying a noteworthy service achievement in the fight against Tuberculosis. Stephenson, a nurse with the McHenry County Department of Health, received the award for quickly identifying a rare case of drug-resistant TB in the county last spring. Along with other members of the department’s Communicable Disease team, Stephenson worked to ensure proper patient care precautions were in place and that the Illinois Department of Health and the Centers for Disease Control were notified.

Grant helps 300 poverty-stricken people our work with the funds already donated. Sal and his team of volunteers have been busy providing assistance to many senior citizens, children, working poor families, single mothers, the handicapped and veterans in our communities. More than 300 of our neighbors in need have been helped since we began this matching grant on July 21. Those are 300 people who will not have to suffer through eviction, utility disconnection, lack of transportation resulting in job loss, lack of basic necessities, toiletries and food. Thinking of these 300 people I cannot think of one of them that I could envision living in desperate poverty. If I had to pick and choose which one of the children or senior citizens we helped who could have survived just fine without our assistance I can’t think of any. It would break my heart to have had to tell these people, “Sorry but we cannot help you right now. Do you think you can wait until next month when we have more donations? homes and change their lives forever. Some of the comments in recent letters are: I am a young woman with kidney disease. It is so hard both working and managing my health. I have a young daughter that I need to provide for. I am behind in my car payment and rent due to a recent set back in my health that kept me from work for a few weeks… My utilities are about to be disconnected. I have two children that both have asthma and severe allergies. I cannot be without electricity to run our air purifiers and airconditioning. I lost my job due to the many times I had to take my children to the emergency room. I have since gotten another job but can’t seem to catch up on our bills… I know a senior citizen that is really struggling to get by. She lives very frugally on her small social security. She had money stolen from her by her grandson, even though he denies it. He uses drugs and has taken stuff from her in the past. She now does not have money to pay her rent and utilities. I know she is not

vehicle. We also provided emergency housing for two families as they were evicted and living in cars. Can you imagine the fear and distress of living in a car at any age, much less as a senior citizen or a child? This is a reality for people in our community. So many people walk around our beautiful communities and ask themselves, “How can poverty be here?” Poverty can be in any community. It does not discriminate due to age, religion, location or race. It causes pain and suffering to all it touches. It happens behind closed doors and in every neighborhood. Thanks to all of you we are removing those pains every day. We are erasing the suffering and returning smiles to the faces of scared, hungry children. Thanks to all of you and the Barnabas donors we will be doing this for many more people this coming year. As I write this column I am looking upon a stack of requests waiting for their turn to be touched by the generosity of the Barnabas donors and all of you. We will enter their

for a few more weeks or wait until after your eviction to receive help?” Thanks to all of you I did not have to say those words. We together were able to lift these fellow creations up and out of their despair of living in poverty. Just this past week we have been able to help a single mother who was struggling after her teenage son was in the hospital for over three months with a life threatening illness. She received much needed utility and rent assistance. We also helped a senior citizen with household repairs and volunteer assistance with food shopping and taking her pet to the veterinarian. We then helped another single mother with car repairs and gas. A disabled vet was provided with rent assistance, food and household necessities. A working poor family was given help with gas, food and toiletries. We repaired several cars this week, including new tires for a woman driving her car on a donut tire, and a handicap accessible van was restored to good running order for a disabled woman. A large truck with room for several wheelchairs and walkers was purchased for a family with handicapped children. Thank you to Gregg Kunes and Kunes Country Ford Lincoln of Delavan for their generous help with the purchase of this

As we go about the dayto-day running of our charity The Time Is Now to Help, we often get so caught up in the tasks at hand, providing the immediate needs of one of our fellow creations suffering in poverty, the entering of donations, writing and mailing thank-you notes, applying for grants, all our state and federal requirements to maintain our 501©3 status, we often forget the big picture. Our effect on our communities is not something we contemplate on a regular basis. When we took a moment this week to actually look at the numbers, to review the assistance we have provided this year to date, we were able to truly appreciate the effect our generous matching grant donors and all of you are having on our organization and the people we help. Due to this we thought it is something that we should reflect on this week in our column. We thought it appropriate to share with you how these funds have been helping to ease the desperate pains of poverty. After all, it is you who has made these matching grants a success. We are nearly half way to our goal of $61,000 in matching funds for the Barnabas matching grant. While we patiently wait for the donations to match this grant 100 percent, we are continuing

Area clerks see potential of e-poll books Correspondent
An electronic poll book, or e-poll book, is the computer and program that replaces a paper-based poll book. State law allows municipal clerks to maintain both paper and electronic poll books. And while some local clerks have seen the benefits of e-poll books, most agree there needs to be statewide policy on their use. “I’ve been doing my homework on this new tool and I believe it will save time for poll workers by making the process more efficient,” Town of Salem Clerk Cindi Ernest said, In July 2013, a research team was assembled and put into action by state Government Accountability Board Director Kevin Kennedy to study the feasibility of e-poll books. In 2014, the staff that conducted the research presented two recommendations to the GAB. The first was to direct staff to continue to research and develop standards for approval of electronic poll books. The second was that staff should conduct an analysis of the costs and benefits of developing in-house a custom electronic poll book system for use in Wisconsin. Both recommendations failed and it seemed that the
e-book idea was dead in the water. At an April 2015 meeting, Manitowoc County Clerk Jamie Aulik requested that the GAB revisit the idea and develop standards for e-poll books. Aulik presented a letter signed by 107 municipal and county clerks requesting the same. At a June 2015 meeting, both voter advocates and election officials spoke in support of developing standards for the approval of e-poll books for use in Wisconsin. The GAB staff surveyed the clerks to determine their level of support for development of standards and the actual use of electronic poll books. More than 800 of the state’s nearly 2,000 municipal and county clerks responded and a majority said they supported the development of standards and procedures for e-book use. While the majority of those who responded have not attended an e-poll book presentation, a majority did report that they were interested in learning about e-poll books and were interested in having the option to use e-poll books. E-poll books allow election officials to review and/ or process voter information during an election but does

good tool for clerks and the handling of voter registration. Racine County Clerk Wendy Christensen said that she has attended one demonstration. “I know that county clerks want to see standards and procedures developed but only if the use of e-poll books is optional. Not all municipalities have the ability to use them.” Burlington City Clerk Diahnn Halbach said, “I had a glimpse at the Wisconsin Municipal Clerk Association conference in August. I saw some pros and have yet to see the cons. It’s really new and more research must be done.”

Wounded veteran awarded for positivity
Delavan man is ‘Mr. Congeniality’ of mountain-biking excursion By Vicky Wedig

STAFF WRITER
Delavan veteran wounded in Afghanistan was awarded for exuding positivity during a mountain-biking event in Utah last month. Mark Duran, 42, who describes himself as “an artsy fartsy ski coach,” took part in the first off-road Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride in Park City, Utah, from Sept. 2-6. Duran was surprised when, at the end of the three biking days of the event, he was presented with the sole award issued at the first-time camp – the Mike Roman award. Mike Roman was not a veteran but a Missouri man whose leg had to be amputated after it became severely infected after knee surgery in 1994. Roman endured such extreme pain, he asked his wife to help him end his life, Duran said. His wife refused, of course, Duran said, and, as a last resort to manage Roman’s pain, he began to use a nerve stimulator. The stimulator – Duran also uses one – improved Roman’s pain level so much, he gained a new zest for life and wanted to do all kinds of things including car racing. He did, and as a result became an inspiration for others particularly wounded veterans and was nominated in 2012 for a Wounded Warrior Project Carry Forward Award. Duran was issued a plaque that
features a picture of Roman, who died in 2012 at the age of 45 from cancer, standing on his single leg next to his race car. The Trek Bicycle Corp. also provided a new mountain bike. Duran said the award is essentially the Mr. Congeniality designation of the event, given to the person who invokes a spirit of positivity. Reflecting on how he invoked positivity among the 20 wounded veterans who took part in the camp, Duran shrugs his shoulders. “When you’ve been through really, really horrible things, every day is a gift, and you pass it on,” he said. Duran’s mom, Toby Case, 73, of Williams Bay, jokes that her son’s humility is in part from SUBMITTED PHOTOS Hi-Liter being raised with a bossy big Wounded veterans stop for a photo during the first off-road Wounded Warrior Project Soldier Ride sister. The road to service Case is from Williams Bay and attended Beloit College, but Duran was born in New Mexico and raised in Utah. The family spent summers in Williams Bay and on Geneva Lake. Today, after suffering traumatic brain and spine injuries in 2005, Duran finds solace on the water. “Being on the lake is very therapeutic,” he said. Duran obtained his bachelor’s degree in Alaska and his master’s degree in education at the University of Oregon. He also attended art school in Europe and was coaching skiing and teaching art in Utah when the “artsy fartsy

He was sent to Germany where he was stationed from 2000 to 2002 and again from March 2003 until August 2007. From April 2005 to January 2006, Duran did a tour in Afghanistan as part of a military police unit. On Sept. 7, 2005, a suicide bomber drove into his troop’s convoy in a marketplace in the Afghan village of Gereshk. Eight people died in the blast, including a small boy on a bicycle who was in the middle of the road,
and 27 people were injured, nearly all Afghan locals, Duran said. Duran was the only American fully exposed to the blast. Protective gear absorbed most of the shrapnel, he said, but Duran suffered traumatic brain injury and fractures to multiple vertebrae, and his internal organs were collapsed by the blast. He was flown by helicopter to Kandahar Air Field where he spent two weeks under observation and was given the option of returning to Germany but declined. “I wanted to be with my unit,” he said.
After a few months back with his unit, Duran said, he was not doing well physically or emotionally and was sent back to Germany and medically retired from the Army in 2007. He was awarded a Purple Heart. The road back home Duran returned to Williams Bay in August 2007, worked at a regional office of the Veteran’s Administration and obtained a therapeutic recreation degree from George Williams College. In 2013, he went back to New Mexico and applied for the Homes

Living the fantasy
My daughter and I live with a bunch of guys, so it wasn’t much of a surprise when they suggested a family fantasy football league. They are good at thinking up ways to beat us in various competitions – and not watching chick flicks. The fantasy league wasn’t such a bad idea. I figured it would generate a friendly atmosphere of competition and provide a shared sense of engagement during the big games. Plus it might even garner me a spot on the couch on Sunday afternoons. I was all in. We started with the draft. This is where you pick your team, not get ready for war. Since my knowledge of professional football fits comfortably on the tip of a very sharp pencil, I was a little apprehensive. My sons showed me there are apps for that. Besides, none of this has ever been about the game; it’s about the fantasy. Win or lose, I’m just glad I got invited. It’s allowing me the opportunity to spend quality time engaged in sports talk with my guys as well as enjoying an ongoing date with them every Sunday afternoon through at least the first week in February.
