Vinyl spins Not-so-Polar Plunge true for local store owner

When David Prucha decided to leave the auto sales business 17 years ago to open a record store in Antioch, his wife Christine thought he was crazy.

With the rise of the compact disc and subsequent advancements in technology that allows people to download digital music, no one could blame her.

However, since Prucha opened Track One Vintage Stereo in Antioch, he has bucked the trend and reports business continues to boom.

“I have got customers that come from Indiana, Green Bay, Rockford and Madison – everywhere,” Prucha said.

“It is hard to find a store like this.”

Prucha has about 8,000 records, mostly priced at $5, with the highest at around $40.

While he sells compact discs, he said customers still come in for records, citing 20 records for every CD sold.

“There is probably more customers now than when I opened. It is about sound quality,” he said. “Nothing sounds like a piece of vinyl.

The nice thing about records

is that you can’t beat it.”

Antioch resident Gig Gluck is one customer who prefers records over CDs, noting the sound has a wider range.

Contrary to popular belief, there are new vinyl records being produced, with an average price of $40, Prucha said.

The age of Prucha’s customer base is between 40-50, but he has a customer who is 11 years old, with his oldest in the upper 70s.

“An 11-year-old comes in with his father and they buy records,” he stated.

Another method to maintaining a constant flow to his business is his repair service.

Prucha has an electronics repair certificate from Chicago’s DeVry Institute.

“I have evolved into a big repair shop because of my reputation and talent in the repair area,” he said. “Word started getting around about doing repairs well, and it took off.”

He said turntables on vintage record players are most durable, with the majority of repairs targeted toward replacement of needles and belts.

They were amongst the 300-plus participants in the 2016 Polar Plunge presented by the Law Enforcement Torch Run and GEICO. The Polar Plunge is a statewide initiative in support of Special Olympics athletes. Participants must raise $100 in donations and, in turn, get to jump into a frigid body of water in their Illinois locale. All proceeds collected by plungers benefit the 22,000 traditional athletes and 21,000 Young Athletes of Special Olympics Illinois. The Fox Lake event raised over $60,000 for the Special Olympians. Though air temperatures away from the lake flirted with both sides of the 60-degree mark, participants and the crowd on hand endured a strong wind off the waters making for a chilly experience, though still warmer than a typical February afternoon. The water temperature was in the mid-30s.

Responders to receive mental health training In a partnership with the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department, the Mental Health Board will provide four presentations that will guide law enforcement personnel in understanding and handling mental health-related situations.

Kent Williams, owner of Breach Point consulting, will present a variety of best practice approaches in addressing the challenges of dealing with mental health issues within a law enforcement culture.

Officers, sergeants and those who assist them will reflect upon the traumas and triumphs associated with modern law enforcement, and how these influence the pivotal balance between professional and personal relationships.

The Mental Health Board will also support Scott Naydenoff, Deputy Chief of Field Operations, in his effort to become a certified Mental Health First Aid Instructor.

Not-so-Polar Plunge

Upon certification, Naydenoff plans to conduct mental health first aid training for public safety personnel and first responders in McHenry County.

Mental health first aid is an evidence-based public education program that helps non-mental health professionals learn to defuse crisis, promote mental health literacy, combat stigma, enable early intervention, and connect people to care, according to the Mental Health Board.

The course provides more options to help public safety personnel and first responders to help them de-escalate incidents and better understand mental illness so they can respond to mental health-related calls appropriately.

29 submit applications for open judge position Community briefs Twenty-nine area attorneys have filed applications for the associate judge vacancy created by the appointment of Christopher R. Stride as Circuit Judge by the Illinois Supreme Court.

In the coming weeks, the applicants will be interviewed by the current circuit judges and they will also be evaluated by members of the Lake County Bar Association’s Judicial Selection and Retention Committee, according to the office of Chief Judge Jorge Ortiz.

The Bar Association will also conduct a poll with their membership on all candidates’ qualifications.

The public will have the opportunity to comment by letter, which should be addressed to the Office of the Chief Judge, Lake County Courthouse, 18 N. County Street, Waukegan, IL 60085-4359. These letters will be accepted until March 11.

After the review process is completed, the nominating committee of circuit judges will select the names of two candidates to be placed on a ballot.

All circuit judges will receive individual ballots naming the two finalists and will submit their ballots to the Administrative Office in Springfield. The ballots will be tallied by the Administrative Office of the

“If I can make a deal with them, I would take it,” Prucha said. “I buy as many records as I don’t buy, because a lot of people will store it in a damp basements or a garage, where the jackets get wet, I will not buy it.”

After nearly two decades owning the shop at 348 W. North Ave., Antioch, Prucha said he wouldn’t trade it for his prior job of selling vehicles. He also reported that he is still married.

“One day I left the car dealership, went home and told my wife I was going to open an electronics store,” he said. “She said I was crazy, but the rest is history.”

29 submit applications for open judge position Twenty-nine area attorneys have filed applications for the associate judge vacancy created by the appointment of Christopher R. Stride as Circuit Judge by the Illinois Supreme Court.

In the coming weeks, the applicants will be interviewed by the current circuit judges and they will also be evaluated by members of the Lake County Bar Association’s Judicial Selection and Retention Committee, according to the office of Chief Judge Jorge Ortiz.

The Bar Association will also conduct a poll with their membership on all candidates’ qualifications.

The public will have the opportunity to comment by letter, which should be addressed to the Office of the Chief Judge, Lake County Courthouse, 18 N. County Street, Waukegan, IL 60085-4359. These letters will be accepted until March 11.

After the review process is completed, the nominating committee of circuit judges will select the names of two candidates to be placed on a ballot.

All circuit judges will receive individual ballots naming the two finalists and will submit their ballots to the Administrative Office in Springfield. The ballots will be tallied by the Administrative Office of the Illinois Courts who will advise

Chief Judge Ortiz of the name of the candidate who received the majority of the votes cast.

Eggcellent Easter Parade & Egg Hunt The Antioch Parks & Recreation Department is sponsoring the 24th Annual Eggcellent Easter Adventure on Saturday, March 26, 2016. The Parade is set to begin at 10:30 am.

Immediately following the parade, (approximately 11:00 am) the Easter Egg Hunt will begin at Williams Park for children 1 - 10 years old. Children will receive a bag to collect 10 eggs in and have a chance to win 1 of 3 Easter baskets in their age division. The age groups are 1-2 years old, 3-4 years old, 5-7 years old and 8-10 years old. The cost is $3.00 per child.

Wristbands can be purchased at the Parks office located at 806 Holbek Drive, Antioch.

The week of the event the wristbands will be $5.00 each. THERE WILL BE NO REGISTRATION THE DAY OF THE EVENT THIS YEAR. Limited to 700 children total. The Easter Bunny will be on hand to greet the children at the parade and at the hunt.
