5:30 a.m. for a report of a head-on crash involving the semi-truck and a sport utility vehicle. An investigation into the crash indicates a westbound, 2008 Chevy sport utility vehicle, being driven by a 33-year-old Richmond man left its lane and struck the eastbound 2003 Mack semi-truck, which was carrying approximately 46,000 pounds of sand, according to police. The crash resulted in the semi-truck erupting in fire,

and becoming fully engulfed. Several explosions could be heard following the crash, which were later determined to be a result of the semi-truck’s batteries exploding, according to police. Vehicles parked along Highway 173 at a nearby car dealership were damaged as a result of the heat from the fire. The driver of the sport utility vehicle was cited for improper lane usage and unlawful use of an electronic communication device.

Jenna Wietbrock, 8, (upper photo, left) and brother Zach, 6, apply the finishing touches to their scarecrow, during the annual Harvest Celebration at the Christian Life Fellowship Church, 41625 N. Deep Lake Rd., Antioch, on Saturday. Young artists Katurah Kienast, 5, (above, left) and sister Gabby, 9, apply a big smile to their scarecrow. Children picked out clothes for the scarecrow they helped to build and decorate. The finished work was put on display for all to see until it left for home with their young artists. The activity came about largely through the efforts of church member Gloria Dircks of Salem, Wis. Dircks supervised the craft as well as provided the hay and wooden frames to construct the scarecrows.

Lake County law enforcement officers collectively issued 888 citations during the Drop It and Drive/Stay Alive enforcement campaign, which ran July 26 through Labor Day. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office deputies and police agencies throughout the county worked collaboratively in an attempt to educate motorists about the dangers of distracted driving. During the campaign law enforcement focused on enforcing the cell phone ban. Lake County law enforcement officers conducted traffic stops on more than 1,600 drivers who were illegally using a cellular phone while driving, during this campaign. In addi-

Sheriff Mark Curran said, “Of the 888 citations issued in Lake County, over 140 of them were issued by Lake County Sheriff’s Deputies. The Lake County Sheriff’s Office will continue making distracted driving awareness and enforcement a priority, and we hope parents will continue setting a positive example, teaching their children to #DropItAndDrive.” Undersheriff Ray Rose added, “I look at this enforcement effort as having potentially
