Communities throughout northern Illinois will offer Christmas events and tree lighting ceremonies to kick off the holiday season.

Different events throughout the area include: • Christmas Walk from 12:30 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 19, and from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 20, in Downtown McHenry, 1114 N. Green St., McHenry.

Sand Lake Rd. in Lindenhurst, IL on Friday, Nov 11. Despite stiff winds and chilly temperatures, area residents, including 120 first graders from the B.J. Hooper Elementary School in Lake Villa, filled the memorial site. Speakers included Veterans Memorial Commission Chairman, Paul Baumunk, Lindenhurst Mayor Dominic Marturano, veterans’ advocate Julie Tevenan, and retired Col. Michael Peck. The Lakes Community High School Band entertained those gathered with patriotic music. Presentation of Colors was done by the Lindenhurst-Grayslake Police Explorer Post 2008 Color Guard.

Rev. Jamie L. Lowery delivered the invocation. Near the completion of the ceremony, the first graders (at right) surprised the veterans, presenting each with handmade cards and flowers. Members of the Lake County Detachment 801 of the Marine Corps League fired off a 21-gun salute to conclude the event.

Holiday events set in Richmond

The Village of Richmond will have a “Christmas of Yesteryear” holiday-filled weekend from Friday, Dec. 2, to Sunday, Dec. 4, at varying times and locations. There will be a different slate of activities on each day. Among them are: • Tree lighting ceremony which will include Santa giving stockings to children, crafting ornaments, silent auctions and face painting at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 2, at Stevens Park, at the northeast corner Broadway and Main.

• St. Joseph’s Church Cookie Walk, crafters, a continuation of the silent auctions, telling of “Origin of Santa,” Ballet performance, Holiday Shop, bake sale, photo opportunity with Father Christmas, face painting and hayrides from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 3, at Memorial Hall, 10308 Main St., Richmond.

Slices of life

What happens when order is interrupted?

“We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit.” – Aristotle I strive for an orderly life. It’s less chaotic that way. Besides, with order comes power. The power of predictability. With predictability comes calmness and reduced stress.

And that leads to order.

You see how that came full circle? Just like the circle of life.

Which is exactly where my quest for order originated: with my offspring. With each addition to our family, my husband and I found our power wane and our grip on an orderly household slip further away, just beyond our grasp.

any semblance of order had slid into the abyss of that great entity known as quality family time.

And then, out of pure necessity, we got organized – or made an attempt anyway. It was either that or surrender my sanity or never find a pair of matching socks ever again.

I had more gimmicks and schemes for organizing my household than I had LEGOs on the living room floor – and that’s saying something. Each member of the family had an assigned

color, which correlated to drinking cups, storage bins, toothbrushes, towels, T-shirts and any other number of household necessities that can and do get misplaced and messed up in untidy households.

Likewise, a busy, organized household must establish a proficient way of managing and maximizing time. Morning showers, for instance, are scheduled to the millisecond in order to accommodate each person and ensure that the last shower-taker of the day has access to the luxury of the limited commodity known as hot water.

This is important. I should know. I am often the last shower-taker.

Morning routines are critical to successfully getting everyone out the door and to

where they need to be by the designated time they need to be there. My morning routine is a well-established, artfully executed work of time management. I move from task to task with the proficiency of a ninja warrior on the hunt, except without any swords or nunchucks.

My hands are my weapon of choice – for grooming, dressing, making the bed and, most importantly, holding my cup of coffee.

My tasks are performed in an orderly order. One leads to the other like a welloiled machine. Unless – as I recently discovered – the order is interrupted.

This happened one day last week. I don’t remember the reason for the exact interruption. I do know it was initiated by one of the offspring I alluded to earlier.

Suffice to say it was 7:13 am and someone needed something by 7:14 and only mom could find this critical article. And it was an emergency. Of course it was.

I leapt to my child’s rescue like a supermom, sans cape. I found the lost item, probably in the exact spot where it was supposed to be. Then I returned to my routine.

Griffiths), a bitter old miser, who receives visits from his former business partner, Jacob Marley (Chris Riter), and the Ghosts of Christmas Past (Garrett Christiansen), Present (Jim McClure), and Yet to Come, and becomes a kinder, gentler, transformed man because of the encounters.

A century of change A look back at the strides to modern day

Have you ever given thought to the changes that have occurred in the lifetimes of those born in the early 1900s? They were born at a time when the life expectancy of males was 47 years and females could expect to live to 49 years.

Life expectancy increased to 75 years for men and 80 years for women born a century later. Life expectancy was not the only thing that would change during their lives. While there are always changes in the ways of living, this group born in the early 1900s saw more changes in everyday life than any other period of time.

In the early 1900s, streets in the Chain O’ Lakes area were few and far between.

They were not paved as most major roads are today but generally were dirt, many following the old Native American trails. Travel along these roads was primarily by horse drawn wagons as farmers

Automobiles were first introduced in the 1880s by Oldsmobile but they were owned only by the extremely wealthy. In 1903 Ford began to mass-produce autos at a cost of a few hundred dollars, far above the financial means of most citizens. By the 1920s family automobiles became more common but it was only one auto per family.

Today, according to a research study by Experian, 35 percent of households own three or more automobiles.

Those living in the 1900s also saw a change in travel.

Cross-country travel in the early 1900s went from train travel to the family automobile excursion to airplane travel across the country. And while this travel was not open to ordinary people, space travel was introduced. The astronauts traveled to outer space, to the moon, and the established a multi-national space station by the end of the century.

Changes at home Homes at the beginning of the 20th century did not have the amenities that are expected in homes today. Indoor plumbing, electrical lights, and furnaces were not common in homes built before 1900. These amenities were seen only in the homes of the very wealthy.

Most of the homes in the Antioch area were farmhouses, which were year-round homes, or summer cottages built along the many lakes of the area.

As the century progressed indoor plumbing was introduced in more homes and electric lights replaced the oil lamps used to light the homes.

While individual homes may have lacked indoor plumbing, the Mineola Hotel in Fox Lake was one of the exceptions. In 1891 this 100-room hotel on the shores of Fox Lake was known for having indoor plumbing, including hot water.

had very little insulation or furnaces for year round occupancy. In the early 1900s houses were often heated by fireplaces, some of which were also used to cook meals.

When furnaces were installed most were coal burners. Residents had to shovel the coal into the furnace to keep the fire from going out.

Later, oil-burning furnaces replaced some of the coal burners and did not need to be stoked through the night. Today most furnaces are fueled by natural gas.

Air conditioning did not begin to appear until the 1950s and most of those were window units. Today many new homes are built with whole house air conditioning.

The kitchen, which is always the heart of the home, has undergone many changes.

Wood-burning stoves have been replaced by gas or electric stoves. Microwave ovens are now in almost every kitchen along with a dishwasher and a garbage disposal. Many of today’s children have never had to wash the nightly dishes, a chore often reserved for children in the first half of the 1900s – instead they load the dishwasher.

The ice man cometh Food was stored in underground or basement food cellars. Iceboxes held the food that had to be refrigerated.

The icebox was exactly as its name. A block of ice was delivered to the house and placed in the icebox by the ice man. In the winter ice was harvested from the lakes and the Fox River and provided not only for the local area but was also transported to Chicago by train to provide for the city’s needs.

Radios and newspapers were the only ways that news was shared. In the middle 1900s television began to make its way into family homes. Today giant screens are found in homes and many homes have more than one television, often one in each room.

Although developed in the late 1800s, telephones made their way into homes in the 1900s. Developed in the late 1970s, the cell phone began to make its way into everyday life several decades later.

While originally there was one phone for the household, today each member of the family has his or her own cell phone.

Computers were introduced in the 20th century and

by the end of the century the personal computer made its way into many homes.

Enjoy the movies? The movies have changed from black and white silent films to the onset of the “talkies.”

Gifts, especially plates or cups and saucers, were often given as premiums to encourage regular movie attendance.

Many homes had complete sets of china collected from visits to the movies.

Later, color was added to movies and screens increased in size. A trip to the movies included a news report, cartoons and usually two movies.

Today movies can be enjoyed at the theater or streamed at home on the computer or television.

People born in the early 1900s experienced many advances to make life easier and better but they also suffered through the depression, the bombing of Pearl Harbor, World Wars I and II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. With all the advances made in the 20th century, what can be expected as we continue into the 21st Century? Will those who were born in 2000 see as many changes and growth to their lives as those born a century earlier?

Community briefs Grant will help create Donation event to sensory garden help girls become The Village of Fox Lake re- Girl Scouts cently received a $2,400 Think Green Grant from Waste Management.

This grant program is a part of Waste Management’s national effort to encourage local environmental solutions that build sustainable communities.

Representative Mike Brink presented the grant to the village at the Nov. 8, Village Board Meeting.

The grant will be used to create a sensory garden for individuals who deal with sensory issues.

“Loud noises and chaos at most parks create an unsafe environment for people with sensory issues and our garden will provide a calm and relaxing oasis where senses can be stimulated,” said Community Development Director Donovan Day. Plans are already being made for the sensory garden.

A century of change A look back at the strides to modern day

Have you ever given thought to the changes that have occurred in the lifetimes of those born in the early 1900s? They were born at a time when the life expectancy of males was 47 years and females could expect to live to 49 years.

Life expectancy increased to 75 years for men and 80 years for women born a century later. Life expectancy was not the only thing that would change during their lives. While there are always changes in the ways of living, this group born in the early 1900s saw more changes in everyday life than any other period of time.

In the early 1900s, streets in the Chain O’ Lakes area were few and far between.

They were not paved as most major roads are today but generally were dirt, many following the old Native American trails. Travel along these roads was primarily by horse drawn wagons as farmers came into town to purchase Discover the

Automobiles were first introduced in the 1880s by Oldsmobile but they were owned only by the extremely wealthy. In 1903 Ford began to mass-produce autos at a cost of a few hundred dollars, far above the financial means of most citizens. By the 1920s family automobiles became more common but it was only one auto per family.

Today, according to a research study by Experian, 35 percent of households own three or more automobiles.

Those living in the 1900s also saw a change in travel.

Cross-country travel in the early 1900s went from train travel to the family automobile excursion to airplane travel across the country. And while this travel was not open to ordinary people, space travel was introduced. The astronauts traveled to outer space, to the moon, and the established a multi-national space station by the end of the century.

Changes at home Homes at the beginning of the 20th century did not have

the amenities that are expected in homes today. Indoor plumbing, electrical lights, and furnaces were not common in homes built before 1900.

These amenities were seen only in the homes of the very wealthy.

Most of the homes in the Antioch area were farmhouses, which were year-round homes, or summer cottages built along the many lakes of the area.

As the century progressed indoor plumbing was introduced in more homes and electric lights replaced the oil lamps used to light the homes.

While individual homes may have lacked indoor plumbing, the Mineola Hotel in Fox Lake was one of the exceptions. In 1891 this 100-room hotel on the shores of Fox Lake was known for having indoor plumbing, including hot water.

The lakeside houses were built for summer use, so they had very little insulation or furnaces for year round occupancy. In the early 1900s houses were often heated by

Area couple shares their devotion for animal with the public

A dozen years ago, Ed and Darlene Geiser decided to make a monumental professional change in their lives. They traded lawn treatment for the close cousin of the llama.

The Geisers’ business, Earthcare Suri Alpacas, is situated on their 20-acre property near Burlington, Wis. In addition to raising Suris — one of two alpaca breeds — the couple has transformed Earthcare into a business offering tours and talks.

They also sell an assortment of knitted and crocheted items that come straight from the alpacas.

As the Geisers contemplated retiring their lawn care business, Darlene said she and her husband

mulled over bringing animals onto their land.

“Since we have a large piece of property, we thought we should look at having animals,” Darlene said, reflecting on that pivotal moment.

A light bulb went off in 2003 when they had the opportunity to interact with alpacas at a town festival. They immediately began researching the species, visiting farms and attending seminars. In short succession, they began raising 20 of the animals on their land.

“They’re so easy to take care of and interact with,” Darlene said, pointing out why she and her husband have an affinity for the four-footed wonders. “If I come home from a bad day, they’ll bring a smile to my face. I just melt inside.”

Building a business

The Geisers’ love affair with alpacas has been evident by the evolution of their business.

They have forged close ties with a number of organizations, including the Alpaca Owners Association and the Texas-based North American Coop, where a portion of their knitted, woven and crocheted products are sold.

The Geisers’ Suris also have gone on tour, visiting such disparate venues as nursing homes and children’s centers.

The animals’ appearances have included stops at the Discovery Barn within the Walworth County fairgrounds.

Darlene said the reason she and Ed take their Suris out on the road is simple: “They’re great therapy animals because of their gentle ways. They’re good for so many things.”

Knowing that animals have a profound way of enriching humans’ lives, Darlene said, she and Ed have made it a mission to use their animals as a mechanism toward promoting peace, harmony and similar virtues. The couple are quick to point out they happily open their doors to persons of all walks of life, and their diverse Suri herd is a reflection of this mantra.

“We have alpacas in almost all colors,” Darlene said. “They are animals for all income levels and

interests.”

The breed’s general temperament also lends to the onthe-road visits, as the Geisers have learned over the years.

“Alpacas are easy to handle and transport in a van,” Darlene said.

“This livestock animal promotes a stress-free lifestyle. Their easygoing nature relaxes even the most stressed person.”

In addition to their on-the-road adventures, the Geisers’ 20 Suris take part in a number of activities on their Rochester property, which is open to the public throughout the year. The couple has created a series of alpaca-themed activities, including obstacle courses for children and adults, as well as costume contests.

Through their affiliation with the Alpaca Owners Association, the Geisers also offer fleece and halter classes for persons interested in learning more about both practices, which are possible from the fibers that make up alpacas’ coats.

New generations

As Earthcare has come into its own the past decade, the Geisers have used the business and their land as a springboard for birthing new Suris. As with so many

aspects of their operations plan, Ed and Darlene have allowed the public to have a bird’s eye view into this fascinating process.

Earthcare features a birthing room. It serves as a place of sanctuary for mother and the baby, which is more technically referred to as a cria. While both roam freely in optimal conditions, Darlene said, the birthing room is especially useful in the winter and when bad weather strikes.

Commercially, the Geisers sell their Suris as the new cria morph into young adults. The couple also offers custom breeding for persons seeking out a specific type of Suri, which is noted for its varying appearance.

For would-be owners with the available land or appropriate accommodations, Darlene said it is not difficult listing alpacas’ many virtues, which have become strong selling points over the years.

“They are clean, quiet, intelligent, safe and disease resistant,” Darlene said.

Anyone who has raised animals knows all too well that waste management can be a messy part of the process. But Darlene said

While the Suris themselves take center stage at Earthcare, there is quite a bit going on behind the scenes. In addition to their gentle persona, alpacas have another notable selling point: their fibers. For centuries, textile manufacturers have adored alpacas because of the many ways the species’ coats can be used to create high-quality articles of clothing.

“Alpacas produce one of the world’s finest and most luxurious natural fibers,” Darlene said. “It is soft as cashmere, and is warmer, lighter and stronger than wool and by nature water repellent.”

The fibers also provide great value, Darlene said, pointing out, “We use every part of our alpacas’ fiber — even the rough stuff.”

The Geisers’ herd is sheered once annually, and the outgrowth of the culled fiber is sold through a variety of outlets, most notably through Earthcare’s partner, the North American Coop.

That relationship means the alpacas’ fibers are available to merchants and consumers in far-reaching locales.

A small shop is also situated on the Geisers’

farm. The couple sells a variety of products made entirely of Suris’ fibers, including socks, rugs, horse saddle pads and blankets, hats, gloves, fur-created toys, sweaters and vests. Raw materials made of the fibers are also available, including skein, roving, felt and raw fleece.

Suri alpacas have a life expectancy of about 20 years. They stand about 36 inches tall and weigh around 150 pounds.

Looking ahead

As she and Ed consider the future, Darlene said she looks forward to Earthcare’s continued evolution, although the couple does not intend to alter their business’ overall mission statement.

“We are a small farm with a big heart,” Darlene said.

Earthcare is open yearround by appointment.

The farm also is open at times during general days and times for public tours and information sessions.

In the months ahead, the Geisers are holding a series of open houses this fall and early winter. Snacks will be served, and special deals will be offered.

The farm will have the open houses from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 3 and Sunday, Dec. 4.

How can so many people still be living in poverty in our communities? I hear this question all the time. I continue to find senior citizens unable to make ends meet on their Social Security after an unplanned expense such as a dental visit, car repair or illness devastates their well-planned budget. These senior citizens will cut back on food and other daily necessities to avoid the shame and fear of being evicted. I also continue to find working poor families, those that live paycheck to pay check working lowwage jobs, lose everything when someone gets sick or a car breaks down. A large portion of our population lives this close to poverty every day. No one plans on cancer or other lifethreatening illness to strike, but, when it does, it can quickly devastate any of our fellow creations, both physically and financially.

Thanks to all of you and the Barnabas donors, we have been able to remove some of the financial devastation being felt by our neighbors in desperate need.

These past weeks, while raising the Barnabas $50,000 matching grant funds, we have been helping many of our fellow creations. We only share with you one letter each week, but during an average week, we answer four to five requests for assistance. Since we began

distributing the donations from this matching grant on Sept. 20, 2016, we have helped more than 60 of our fellow creations. Here is a summary of some of the people given help thanks to the Barnabas $50,000 matching grant and all of you joining in on the caring and sharing.

A friend wrote us a letter asking for help for her best friend. This woman, a young mother, had been diagnosed with cancer during her second pregnancy. As she chose to wait to treat the cancer to give the unborn child a few more weeks to develop, the cancer had spread. Now she is in the fight for her life, all while caring for a premature infant. We are so grateful to all of you that we did not have to ignore this friend’s request for assistance. We were able to provide food, rent and transportation assistance to ease their financial burden.

A teacher wrote for assistance for a family going through a difficult time after the death of the father. The widowed mother was not only trying to get through her grief over the loss of her spouse, she was also trying to get by financially without the support of her husband.

With our new budget, changes made to their expenses, and first month’s rent and security deposit on a more affordable rental, this woman will be able to

get by when she begins her new job next week. What would have happened to this woman and children if a caring teacher had not brought her to our attention?

Would they have become homeless and hungry?

Thanks to all of you and the Barnabas donors, we did not have to find out. They are on their road to healing from both their loss and their financial disaster.

A woman wrote in requesting assistance for her family. Her husband had become ill several months ago and had ultimately lost his job. After many tests and hospital procedures, they finally found the cause for his continued health crisis. The woman worked full-time but did not earn enough to pay all the expenses for their family of three children.

They fell behind in their rent and were on the verge of eviction when The Time Is Now to Help stepped in to provide our caring assistance. We provided rental assistance, utilities and food to ease their temporary financial burdens.

Once the father was fully recovered from his surgery and feeling well enough to work, he was able to resume his job and support his family once more. What if we hadn’t been there to provide a helping hand during this health crisis? I thank God we were all there

It would have been a downward spiral they would not have been able to get out of on their own.

A handicap ramp was provided along with some much needed updates and modifications for a handicapped gentleman.

Providing accessibility in a handicapped individual’s home is priceless. After becoming handicapped because of an accident, this man was not able to afford to make the necessary changes to his home. Being carried up stairs and not being able to reach sinks or easily navigate the bathroom is more than a hardship. Because of the handicap modifications made in his bathroom he was even able to take his first shower in months. His gratitude was so great, it showed through his tears for the positive changes we were able to make in his life. Thanks to all of you, the Barnabas donors and a very caring contractor we were able to make his life accessible once more.
