With thanks and remembrance
Six World War II veterans (above, from left) Earl Kelly, Frank Kraft, Tom Atchinson, Marvin Ryan, Norbert Pischke, and Don Martin, are recognized for their service at the Veterans Day ceremony held at the Veterans Memorial, 2301 E. Sand Lake Rd. in Lindenhurst, IL on Friday, Nov 11. Despite stiff winds and chilly temperatures, area residents, including 120 first graders from the B.J. Hooper Elementary School in Lake Villa, filled the memorial site. Speakers included Veterans Memorial Commission Chairman, Paul Baumunk, Lindenhurst Mayor Dominic Marturano, veterans’ advocate Julie Tevenan, and retired Col. Michael Peck. The Lakes Community High School Band entertained those gathered with patriotic music. Presentation of Colors was done by the Lindenhurst-Grayslake Police Explorer Post 2008 Color Guard. Rev. Jamie L. Lowery delivered the invocation. Near the completion of the ceremony, the first graders (at right) surprised the veterans, presenting each with handmade cards and flowers. Members of the Lake County Detachment 801 of the Marine Corps League fired off a 21-gun salute to conclude the event. PHOTOS BY JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
