Local volunteers deliver meals for Thanksgiving
The celebrity of the season
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
Having just arrived in town, Santa Claus gives a high five to one of his many admirers, with Antioch Chamber of Commerce Executive Director, Barbara Porch looking on at the 41st annual tree lighting ceremony of Antioch’s Christmas tree in front of the Village Hall, 874 Main St., on Friday, Nov. 25. Inset: Santa’s helpers Scott McIntyre (back row, from left), Dionne McIntyre, Antioch trustees Mary Dominiak and Ed Macek; and (front row) junior helpers Zor’Nelle Duffie, 11, Zymphony Duffie, 5, and Jenna Lamberty, 10, collectively throw the switch at the tree lighting ceremony. The McIntyres achieved the distinction of “official tree lighters” by winning this year’s Village of Antioch Christmas Ornament Decorating Contest sponsored by the Parks and Recreation Department. Their winning ornament is one of many now hanging on the tree. The event followed the Christmas parade which featured the arrival of Santa Claus.
Charitable groups in Antioch stepped up once again to provide for the community’s needy during Thanksgiving. Antioch Township put together 30 Thanksgiving dinner baskets that were distributed to recipients at the township office on Nov. 19 to pick them up. “Dave Karczewski, owner of Piggly Wiggly, is a great help every year,” Antioch township Supervisor Steve Smouse said. “He shops for all the food we need to get the best prices.” On Nov. 20, members of the Rotary Club delivered baskets to 60 homes. The volunteers gathered at the loading dock of Piggly Wiggly to place assembled baskets into the cars of those who delivered the meals. According to Rotarian Jim Menzer, “Most (of the volunteers) are Rotarians, but some are family or just friends of Rotary. We’ve been doing this for over 25 years.” A number of people helped deliver dinners to families. The complete list includes Connie and Mike Schwert, Rick Kuehn, John and Cathy Phillips, Steve Smouse, Roger Sorenson, Steve DeRue, Matt Tabar, Ed Dominiak, Dennis Cardiff, Jack and Chrys Larson, Dean and Linda Peterson, Chris

A 57-year-old Fox Lake woman reported missing and endangered by her son Friday was found dead at Nippersink Lake the following day, according to the Fox Lake Police Department. “(We) are spearheading an ongoing investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death of a 57-year-old Fox Lake woman,” a news release issued by the department states. Mary Anton was reported missing by her son later that evening when she was not at her home in the 100 block of Arthur Street when he checked on her. “Her son told investigators that he went to her home to check on her, but discovered that she was not there and that her dog was missing as well,” the release stated. Following dialogue with neighbors, authorities determined Anton was last seen at about noon Friday, and that her cellular phone and purse were still inside the home. The next day, authorities reported her missing, placing a missing/endan-

Column has shared news of 700 of the 6,500 people the Time is Now has helped As I began this week’s column I noticed it was our 700th column. We have shared with all of you 700 letters sharing the lives of those who have been touched by our mission over the past 13-plus years we have been writing this column. You have read both the hardships and the positive changes we have made. You have shed both sad and happy tears with all of us. You have helped us fulfill our mission to remove the pains of poverty for our fellow creations. While every week you have been given a glimpse into the lives of these 700 families, senior citizens, the handicapped, veterans and children turning to us in desperate need of assistance, we have helped about 6,500 of our fellow Americans that you did not read about. They have been quietly helped behind the scenes, no newspaper column or camera was there to capture their plight, but all of you were there with us every step of the way. We always feel your love and support that keeps us motivated to continue our mission. When we began our column, our original goal was to bring attention to the fact that there are many people living in extreme poverty. We also wanted to spread the word to the povertystricken that there are people who care and are willing to help. When we began our column many asked how there could be such poverty in our area. Having just moved our organization from the Chicago area to southeast Wisconsin, we knew what signs of poverty to look for. We did not have to look far to find our elderly neighbors living without electricity, children sleeping on floors, handicapped individuals needing basic daily necessities, empty refrigerators and cabinets, families on the verge of eviction or already living in cars. Without The Time Is Now to Help, they would have been left in their pain and suffering, living in fear, without the daily necessities of life, and living without hope of ever receiving help. All of you were not willing to let that happen. You helped to spread the word about our charity that used 100 percent of its donations to provide poverty relief. To this day, every penny of your donations are spent on the necessities of daily life for the poverty-stricken including food, clothing, utilities, toiletries, transportation and shelter assistance. Word soon spread to the media, and the good works we achieved together were shared by CNN, CBS Evening News, CBS Sunday Morning, Fox News and others. But soon after the media left our area, our support returned to all of you, the loyal readers of our weekly newspaper column. You are the lifeblood of what makes The Time Is Now to Help so great. You are what helps us achieve what we have shared in the past 700 weeks of newspaper columns along with the 6,500 people we helped in that same time period that were also in

desperate need. Some of the people we helped years ago are no longer with us. Thanks to all of us working together, these people were able to die with dignity. Their last thoughts in this life were not hunger, fear and pains of poverty. The children we helped 13 years ago are now adults and hopefully following our example of hard work and love for our fellow creations. We hope and pray they followed our example of caring and sharing for their neighbors in need. Our wish is their lives were made better thanks to all of us working together to remove their childhood pains of poverty. This past week we have received many letters requesting our assistance. The need continues to be great. A working poor family is struggling because of the mother being on mandatory bed rest during a high-risk pregnancy. The father had missed work to care for her and the younger child, and the mother had to give up her job. They are being given help with rent and utilities to get them through this temporary financial and medical emergency. A man recently diagnosed with a debilitating genetic disorder is struggling to adjust to his new life in a wheelchair. We helped him to make modifications to his home and provided a handicap accessible van. These are all changes he could never make on his own, yet they have greatly improved his quality of life. Another woman struggling with disabilities was provided a washer and dryer along with food and toiletries. She finds it extremely difficult to leave the home to get to the Laundromat as she has an embarrassing bladder disorder. Now she can wash her bedding and clothing daily to keep up with her personal hygiene. She sent a letter stating, “I don’t know how I would have made it this far if God did not put you in my life. Although I am weathering a tougher storm than most, I still keep my head high and I know there will be brighter days.” Even with her many difficulties in life, our assistance helps her to remain positive. Many hours, every day, are spent fighting poverty, investigating to make sure every penny we give, together, goes to good people in genuine need. Facing all the challenges and despair of the poverty stricken would be too difficult on my own. Thank God I have all of you sharing your strength through your letters, your kind words, and support to The Time Is Now to Help. Together we make a big difference helping our fellow creations of God. I thank all of you for your support over the past 700 weeks that we have shared together in the plight of the poverty stricken. Your kindness, your caring and sharing with the less fortunate
in our communities has been far-reaching and touched many lives over the years. We together have been and will continue to be a blessing to many. We will continue to do our good works for as long as all of you are there standing by our side in this mission. We look forward to hopefully another 700 weeks of columns to celebrate doing good works helping our fellow creations. Please consider donating to the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant. Your funds continue to be desperately needed to provide the poverty-stricken senior citizens, the handicapped, working poor families, children and veterans in our communities with shelter assistance, utility assistance, transportation assistance, food, toiletries and the many other daily necessities. Every dollar of your donation will be matched by the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant, doubling your donation and the poverty relief you provide. Thank you, thank you for your support in helping our fellow Americans in desperate need. God bless you for your compassion and caring and sharing for God’s creations.

Two local stores cited in compliance checks Sheriff aims to curb sale of tobacco to minors
Of 65 Lake County businesses canvassed during the third round of tobacco compliance checks for 2016, four sold to a person younger than 18 years old, according to a Lake County Sheriff’s Office news release. The Sheriff’s Office, which reported a business in Antioch and Volo both sold to minors, states the goal is to reduce health risks associated with selling tobacco to area youth. “There are so many risks to children using tobacco products,” Lake County Sheriff
Mark Curran stated in the news release. “We will continue conducting compliance checks in 2017 to ensure businesses are not selling tobacco to anyone underage.” The last round of compliance checks revealed that three of four businesses in violation did not ask for identification, and the other sold tobacco to someone despite identification noting they were underage. In Antioch, Citgo Gas Station, 41082 North Highway 83 received a citation on Nov. 15. Nine days earlier, Phillips 66 Gas Station at 31727 North
Highway 12 in Volo was cited. Lake County Undersheriff Ray Rose, said he hopes businesses take notice of the violations. “The Lake County Sheriff’s Office takes the requirements of the sale of tobacco and alcohol seriously. We expect our Lake County businesses to do the same, and ensure they are verifying the age of those they sell to,” Rose stated in the news release. The other two cited businesses were Mel’s Amoco in Long Grove and the other was Mobil in Beach Park.
Sheriff seeks man who robbed gas station at gunpoint The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sunday morning armed robbery in unincorporated Lake Villa of a BP Gas Station, where a man brandishing a handgun demanded cash, and fled the scene. According to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Office, the armed robbery happened at about 12:15 a.m., when authorities responded to the business at 36044 North Highway 45. Discover the
The suspect is described as a thinly built, 5-foot, 4-inch darkskinned man wearing a black North Face jacket, black hat, black ski mask, blue jeans and black gloves. “The male pointed a black handgun at the clerk and demanded money from the cash register,” the release states, “He fled the gas station after obtaining an undisclosed amount of money.” The canine unit from the
Lake Villa Police Department responded, tracking the suspect’s scent to a nearby lot, where the trail turned cold. Lake County Sheriff’s Detectives responded and continue to investigate the armed robbery. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Lake County Sheriff’s Office at (847) 549-5200 or Lake County CrimeStoppers at (847) 6622222.

The Lake County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a Sunday morning armed robbery in unincorporated Lake Villa of a BP Gas Station, where a man brandishing a handgun demanded cash, and fled the scene. According to a news release issued by the Sheriff’s Office, the armed robbery happened at about 12:15 a.m., when authorities responded to the business at 36044 North Highway 45.

Wind-blown leaves ignite house fire Family in need of assistance
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
While there were no injuries reported, a Twin Lakes, Wis., family of five is displaced following a residential fire Nov. 18 that remains under investigation, according to Twin Lakes Police Capt. Dennis Linn. And a relative of the family is seeking funds to help offset losses, including basic necessities on a GoFundMe web page. Linn, who offered an excerpt from the Twin Lakes police logs, said investigators are working on finding the origin. According to the police log, a woman reported there were leaves on fire and due to high winds, they blew on to the roof of the home in the 100 block of West Spring Drive. When the Twin Lakes Volunteer Fire Department and Rescue Squad arrived to the scene at about 3 p.m., they discovered the home was engulfed with heavy, black smoke polluting the air, which resulted in a mutual aid request from five other departments. At the scene, Deputy Fire Chief Don Schemenauer stated that all people within the home escaped. “As of right now, there were no injuries,” he said. Additionally, according to a GoFundMe page set up by Susie Porps Lavery – a relative of the family – the Twin Lakes family lost everything. “My cousin’s house caught on fire yester-

The Walworth County Department of Health and Human Services would not release information about the welfare or whereabouts of Michael Donahue’s children – a boy who is now 15 years old and a girl who is now 16 years old. The Donahues’ convictions stem from incidents reported in 2013 when Michael Donahue’s father called authorities to report that Michael and Carrie Donahue would lock the boy, who was then 12 years old, in his bedroom for 12 hours at a time and then yell at him for urinating in the room. The boy’s grandfather
day. Everything was lost,” the GoFundMe page states. “She was home with her 3-yearold twin boys. Their dad was at work and her 15-year-old son was not home from school yet.” “Everyone and the pets made it out safely. The fire started outside and with the high winds…the fire spread very quickly,” the post added. Twin Lakes firefighters received mutual aid from the towns of Randall, Wheatland and Salem in Wisconsin. Two departments from Illinois, Spring Grove and Richmond, also responded to the scene. In addition We Energies and Wisconsin Power came to shut off power to reduce fire hazards. Pending a thorough investigation by the Kenosha County Fire Investigation Task Force, Schemenauer was unable to offer further information. “We haven’t made a determination, but we are in the process of making that determination,” he said. “The Kenosha County Fire Investigation task force is on its way, and until they make a determination, we cannot give out any further information.” How to help To donate to the family, visit the GoFundMe page at www.gofundme.com/7zhouse-fire

said the boy would curl up into a fetal position as a result of the emotional abuse he suffered from his father and stepmother, according to the complaint. Child Protective Services officials spoke to the boy and family members who reported various concerning behaviors by the boy including problems with urination and defecation, the need to wear Pullups (a type of diaper), keeping his fingers in his mouth until his mouth bled, not eating or showering, having urinesoaked socks and shoes, sitting in a cold, dark room at a bar and standing for long periods of time, according to the criminal complaint. The girl, who is 14 months older than her brother, told a Tree House interviewer that her brother had a lock on his door that kept him in. She said the boy would sometimes be locked in his room from 7 p.m. to 8 a.m. and she and her stepsister were prohibited from letting him out of his room. On Dec. 17, 2013, the boy
told the Tree House interviewer that the last time he ate was Dec. 13. The night before, he said, he was required to stand next to the dinner table, and when everyone was eating in front of him, he got a plate, and Carrie Donahue dumped his plate in the sink and would not let him eat because he snuck food, according to the complaint. A counselor at Lake Geneva Middle School, where the boy was enrolled from Sept. 13 to Nov. 27, 2013, also reported concerns to the county Department of Health and Human Service about the boys coming to school disheveled, wearing dirty clothes and asking for food in the morning because he was hungry. The boy told social workers that on one occasion in October 2013, he pooped in his pants, and Carrie Donahue made him eat it, according to the complaint. The boy said he tried to spit it out, but Carrie Donahue told him to swallow it and said she would hurt him if he didn’t do what she said.

A rejuvenated spirit
Stage Stop to re-open as family continues 168-year tradition Jason Arndt
BY STAFF WRITER
hen the Wilmot Hotel opened its doors in 1848, the San Francisco Gold Rush was one year away, Wisconsin was not yet admitted into the United States and the telegraph was in its infancy. Since then, the Wilmot Hotel, now known as Wilmot Stage Stop has stayed in the same family for seven generations as they saw the United States grow into 50 states and countless technological innovations. As the United States grew, the Stage Stop, 30646 113th St., Wilmot, Wis., in western Kenosha County, continued to maintain the historical integrity of the threestory building consisting of a restaurant, museum and third floor where settlers traveling by horse stayed in the 1800s. The 168-year-old history came to an abrupt end in July, but following an outpouring of community support and overwhelming response, the family vowed to re-open with a rejuvenated spirit. According to Jill Wood, daughter of fifth-generation owners Ron and Nancy Hackett, the support gives the family strength to plan a re-opening on Jan. 17. “The response, not only from the local community, but the surrounding communities to reopen the doors was a magical response,” Wood said. “It gave you the motivation and the enthusiasm that the family needed to carry on the tradition.” The enthusiasm, she said, included phone calls, handwritten letters and customers showing up to the property in tears. “There was a lot of emotion, not only from the (customers), but the family,” Wood said. “After 168 years of being open seven days a week, it was a great opportunity to close the doors for six months and concentrate on the quality of what we had.” For the past six months, Wood and her staff have assessed not only the food and service quality, but for ways to improve the overall customer experience. Known for its steak, Stage Stop upgraded to Certified Angus Beef, replaced the T-bone and top sirloin with a 20-ounce bone-in ribeye and butcher steak. Those are not the only upgrades, however, with the Stage Stop adding a vegetable of the day and a new addition to the menu. “We have added the Ahi tuna steak and then we have taken two steaks off and replaced them with two different steaks,” said Wood. “We’ve also added a vegetable of the day because that is what people had been requesting.” Although they improved the menu options, some of the old
website, the second floor was primarily used as a ballroom, where travelers in the 1800s sought a night of fun and relaxation as they ventured between Kenosha and Galena, Ill. en route to the Wilmot Grist Mill. While travelers had a warm meal on the first floor, and danced the night away on the second floor, they needed an overnight resting spot. Enter in the third floor, which consists of 13 cubicles, where travelers slept. “When (Ephraim) Wilcox constructed the 13 small sleeping rooms on the third, he felt quite confident that Wilmot would serve as the perfect location for his hotel on the stage line between Kenosha and Galena,” the website states. Today, nearly all of the artifacts are viewable through a tiny window. Noting its mission to enhance the quality of the guest experience, Wood said, she opted to make the third floor child friendly, noting the small window is unreachable for them. “On the third floor, I put a lot of additional artifacts in the rooms,” she stated. “I also took photos of all those rooms so that children could see what was in them as well, because there was always that small window.” For guests with physical limitations, Wood opted to bring both the second and third floor to the first floor, with a photo scrapbook for everyone to peruse.
Jill Wood, daughter of Wilmot Stage Stop owners Ron and Nancy Hackett, and her husband Craig have taken a hands-on role in reopening of the seven-generation business.
customer favorites are slated to stay the same, including homemade desserts and the trademark baked potato with a stick of butter. “That is definitely going to be still here,” Wood said, in regards to the baked potato. Furthermore, for the last six months, the family opted to add more historical features to the building and hired a new chef and master mixologist. Personnel changes One of the reasons for the July closure was staff turnover, but Stage Stop found two new employees they believe can make a remarkable impression on guests. Stage Stop added Ashley Rupp, who is a pioneer in the 168-year-old history of the business. “We are bringing in the first woman chef to ever be behind the grill,” Wood said. “She has culinary degree.”
Along with a new chef comes a master bartender, Wood said, noting Cory Ludwig delivers several years experience as both a bartender and a teacher. Under Ludwig, who plans to keep up with today’s trendiest cocktail concoctions, guests will have a diverse array of choices, Wood explained. “We have taken the time to update our cocktail menu with mixing old classic cocktails with today’s trends,” said Wood. “We have a master mixologist, I would call him.” “(Ludwig) has worked for a bunch of liquor companies that has done a whole bunch of training and teaching,” she added. Historical appreciation As guests enter the doors in January, they should expect the same physical structure and more, including enhancements for both children and those with physical limitations.
“The goal was to increase the customer experience. That is what we really concentrated on,” Wood explained. “With that being said, we closed down the gift shop and added more historical representations from the family, including the original bar that we brought back in.” The original bar, still in storage, was replaced on the first floor with new counters decades earlier. Wood added historical information from multiple eras on to the original bar, which is now on the second floor, where the gift shop was located. Instead of a gift shop, staff plan to guide guests through the building, offering a more interactive opportunity. “We are now going to be doing history museum tours upstairs, so people can actually hear the story behind the family and the artifacts, instead of just visually seeing them,” she said. According to the Stage Stop
Next generation While Wood has taken the reins in the day-to-day operations of the business, there is a seventh generation entering the business, with her three children showing an interest in maintaining the family tradition dating back to John and Anna Hegeman. “My parents still own it, they are still in ownership,” said Wood, mother of 11-year-old Maci, 13-year-old Erik, and Molly, who is 16 years old. “Two of my children have a lot of interest in it,” said Wood. “They were, I want to say, part of the motivation to reopen as well. They were pretty heartbroken when it was closed.” For more information Wilmot Stage Stop reintroduced an overhauled website Nov. 18 and includes details on the updated menu along with more historical information. Additionally, Wilmot Stage Stop plans to start taking reservations Dec. 1 in anticipation of the Jan. 17 re-opening date. Holiday gift certificates are available, and guests can receive them in-person at Wilmot Stage Stop Monday through Friday between 8 a.m. and 3 p.m. To place a reservation, place a call to (262) 862-6212. The website is found at www. wilmotstagestop.com.

Neither did my husband. If someone had told us marriage might be challenging and difficult, we wouldn’t have believed them. How could loving another person be difficult? (Ha!) Thank goodness for our naivety. And optimism. Now, all these years later, I think we’d both say marriage can be challenging (not to mention a bit of hard work). But it is good work, and challenges are opportunities for growth. And when done right, it gets easier and more fulfilling as the years pass. Most days. chaos of the rest of your day proceeds. 6. Always kiss each other goodbye. It’s also nice to kiss hello and goodnight and happy Groundhog’s day, but goodbye is the one to make a priority. You never know if a goodbye will be your last, and you’d regret forever if you hadn’t paid enough attention to seal it with a kiss. 7. Realize you do not have to agree on everything. Chances are even after decades you won’t have come to terms about the thermostat. It’s the bane of many a great marriage and a war that can’t be won. There are countless similar battles involving laundry folding techniques, vacation destinations, parenting practices and driving habits (which could be a category in itself). 8. Falling in love is easy; staying there not always so. Work to keep things new. Don’t be distracted by the multitude of life experiences that could come between you and your spouse. This includes your job and your children. There are more (there always could be more) but eight is enough for one day. When we got married years ago, our pockets may have been empty, but our hearts were as full as our hair was big. Now we relive those emotions (but not the hairstyle) through our daughter and son-in-law and we are glad for times when life comes full circle.
