Fire department moves ahead on strategic plan By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

JUDE KAIDER The Hi-Liter

The Blau children, Jamie, 12, (from left) Josie, 6, and Benjamin, 5, capture their share of treats from Linda Callahan on Winsor Drive in Antioch on Saturday. An all-day, misty rain coupled with chilly autumn temperatures caused all but the most hearty ghosts and goblins to remain at home pondering what might’ve been. Nonetheless, some of the village’s younger residents did make it outside for the annual tradition of gathering candy from their neighbors.

The Antioch Fire Department Deputy Chief Jon Cokefair presented the first year of the department’s strategic plan to the members of the Joint Fire Committee on Oct. 21. Cokefair said it took some time for the department to hammer out the document. The first part is the mission statement, “To serve our community through dedication, determination and honor.” The vision statement presented is: “It is the vision of Antioch Fire Department to be recognized as an exceptional provider of emergency services by recruiting, developing and retaining high quality personnel. “We shall continue to build community trust and remain responsible and creative in our fiscal and operational planning to deliver the highest caliber of services while being mindful of the community interests.” Cokefair said the department intended to develop three- and a five-year plans next and this would be the product of the members. Leadership would continue

to develop a 10- and 20-year plan. The plan itself highlights the strengths of the department such as sustainable funding, youthful and energetic staff, resilience and an active training division. Cokefair reported that after the ambulance referendum passed, the department had 30 new members in June and July. Those new recruits bring active membership to nearly 130. Some weaknesses and threats identified in the plan overlap, including the fleet equipment and lack of experience. Cokefair said issues with the fleet have been “kicked down the road” and plans to maintain the fleet properly should be made. The lack of active participation in the county’s Strategic Response Team is another issue. Antioch has only two members on that Lake County team. The Strategic Response Team is a group that responds to specific issues such as water recues and hazardous material situations.

Local students invited to MCC open house High school students and adult students from the Richmond, Johnsburg, Spring Grove area can see just about everything McHenry County College has to offer during MCC Night. The annual open house event is scheduled from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, Nov. 11. All prospective adult students, as well as high school juniors, seniors and their parents are encouraged to attend the event, which will take place in the Commons area in Building B on the main campus, located at 8900 Highway 14 in Crystal Lake. More than 40 programs will be represented, including nursing, automotive technology, criminal justice, fire science, digital media (including game design), robotics, horticulture, culinary and graphic design. Information on MCC’s associate’s degrees and certificates, financial aid and athletics will also be available. The event will feature workshops on financing a college education, how to apply for scholarships, college classes for high school students (dual credit), how to transfer college credits, and

services for students with disabilities. “Students can walk around and talk to faculty about programs or classes they’re interested in taking,” said Kellie Carper, manager of new-student transitions. “In today’s economy, students and their parents should look at all their options, Carper said. “We have excellent programs and instructors and MCC students who transfer do just as well or better than students who start at four-year universities as freshmen.” Other highlights include sweet treats made by MCC baking and pastry students and pottery-making and jewelry-making demonstrations, along with welding demos, giveaways and a remote radio broadcast from Star 105.5. MCC Night is free and open to the public. No registration is required. During this event only, the application fee will be waived for all high school seniors and prospective adult students who apply to MCC for the summer and fall 2016 Semesters. For more information, visit www.mchenry.edu/mccnight, or contact Kellie Carper at (815) 455-8670.

When you no longer have a dog the world is a different place. The barks of other dogs resound and seem louder than they were before. When a neighbor’s dog barks and wakes you in the early morning or late night it doesn’t so much annoy, but provokes a twinge of sadness. When you no longer have a dog you don’t have to worry about dog-hair dust bunnies or running out of dog treats. You don’t ever have to read the label on dog food for the hundredth time to make sure real meat is the number one ingredient. You can save money at the grocery store because dog food is expensive. When you no longer have a dog you notice other people with their dogs. It seems as though everyone else has one. They are walking on the street or playing fetch or posting cute dog photos on social media. Sometimes you scroll through them, other times you try not to. When you no longer have a dog you can walk freely through your yard without

Vets Day project set for Wednesday At 9 a.m., on Veterans Day, Wednesday, Nov. 11, approximately 30 veterans from World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War will meet at the Lake County Courthouse for a reception and ceremony and to have their oral histories recorded by official court reporters. The typed transcripts will be archived at the Library of Congress for use by researchers and to serve as an inspiration for generations to come, making accessible the personal accounts of American war veterans, so that future generations may hear directly from the veterans. The County of Lake, the Lake County Bar Association, the Lake County Bar Foundation, the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, the Lake County Public Defender’s Office, Nicasa, the Tri-County Marine Corps League and many individuals have all provided resources, including volunteers, on what would otherwise be a court holiday. Court reporters from Lake County and other courthouses and from the private sector donate their time to attend and transcribe the wartime experiences. Lawyers from Lake County (including several veterans) will serve as interviewers. Attorney Tom Sbertoli, with the law firm of Riewer & Collins, LLC, is a Vietnam era Marine Corps veteran. He has volunteered on Veterans Day to assist with the Project and said, “The Veterans History Project focuses atten-

tion on the veterans who served their country. I am proud to volunteer with these patriots, who are ordinary men and women, who gave up a lot to help when help was needed. The entire county should be proud of this event.” The veterans who will be interviewed include at least 20 veterans of World War II. One man is a former B-24 crew chief with 10 battle stars for the war over Europe. Also scheduled to give his testimony is a Marine who battled on Guadalcanal and Iwo Jima. Others served at Okinawa, the land war in Europe, including the Battle of the Bulge and the Black Forest, in North Africa, India, China and Burma. In addition, there are veterans of the Korean War and the Vietnam War, including one Navy Corpsman who is a veteran of both wars. The program will include commemoration of a plaque in honor of well-known courthouse reporter Tony Gordon, who died in 2012. Gordon served in the Army and was awarded the Army Distinguished Service Cross, one Silver Star, three Purple Hearts, and the Vietnam Campaign Medal. Breakfast, which will include the military favorite chipped beef on toast, will be served to those in attendance. All of the military services will be represented in the participants. The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office’s Children’s Advocacy Center will host a fundraiser for its Healing Garden next month. The fundraiser will take place at the Glen Flora Country Club 2200 N. Sheridan Road, Waukegan, on Dec. 3, beginning at 5:30 p.m. Lake County State’s Attorney Michael G. Nerheim summoned a group of people to learn about the needs of the center and to help educate the community on its existence. As a result, the CAC Friends Committee was developed and has begun the process of helping to raise funds for the CAC Healing Garden. The garden will be located at the CAC in Gurnee. It will allow children and their families to reflect in a safe space, free of shame and fear. The

space will be available for children who come to the CAC to interact, as well as learn that they are not alone in their healing process. The goal of the CAC Friends Committee is to build a healing garden that will be enjoyed by children for years to come. The Lake County Children’s Advocacy Center has been in existence since 1988 and it was founded by former Chief Judge Fred Foreman. The Center works in conjunction with the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office and local Lake County police departments to investigate children who have been physically and sexually abused in Lake County. The non-profit organization provides a safe environment to children when

being interviewed. The CAC is also focused on creating fewer traumas for child victims, and serves as the first step for children in their healing process. All proceeds from this fundraiser will benefit the Children’s Advocacy Center’s (CAC) Healing Garden. Ticket prices are $40 and will include hors d’oeuvres. A silent auction will be held and will include hundreds of items that have been donated by local businesses, families and organizations. For tickets and information, contact the Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office, Carrie Flanigan at (847) 377-3000 or by email at cflanigan@lakecountyil.gov.

Nov. 6 (Seniors only): 9:45 to 11:15 a.m., Senior Services, 110 W. Woodstock St., Crystal Lake • Tues. Nov 10 (must be 9 or older): 4:30 to 6 p.m., MCDH Crystal Lake 100 N. Virginia St., Crystal Lake Flu is a serious and contagious illness – even healthy people can get it, according to health department officials. A flu shot protects you and those around you like pregnant women, young children, people with chronic health conditions (asthma, diabetes, heart disease,

etc.) and people 65 and older who are especially at risk for complications from the flu. The CDC recommends getting a flu shot early because the flu season is long and unpredictable. It takes two weeks for antibodies to develop to pro-

vide protection. Simple ways to protect against the flu include covering a cough, washing hands and staying home when sick. For more information on influenza, visit the CDC www.cdc.gov/ flu/protect/preventing.htm.

Suspect charged in abduction attempts A Kenosha man was jailed on $200,000 bond after he was charged Oct. 26 with attempting to abduct a woman and a girl the previous week. Leroy E. Johnson, 61, allegedly admitted to his involvement in the abduction attempts, according to Kenosha Police. Johnson appeared in Kenosha County Circuit Court Monday on charges including two counts of attempted kidnapping while armed, one count of attempted abduction of a child while armed, one count of child enticement while armed and one count of false imprisonment while armed. On Oct. 22, at approximately 4:43 p.m., officers of the Kenosha Police Department responded to the area of 50th Street and 16th Avenue in reference to an armed abduction attempt of a 52-year old Kenosha woman. The victim indicated that a black four-door vehicle pulled next to her as she walked westbound in the 1300 block of 50th Street, and the lone black male driver of the vehicle asked for directions, according to police. As the victim approached the vehicle, the operator pointed a pistol at her and told her to get into the car, police contend. The victim ran away from the car, and the suspect fled west on 50th

Street. The victim provided officers with a partial license plate number and a description of the suspect. At 7:25 p.m. on the same date, officers responded to the 400 block of 44th Street in reference to another attempted abduction that appeared to involve the same Leroy Johnson suspect and vehicle. This instance involved a 14-year old Kenosha girl who was walking west on 44th Street from the lakefront. The suspect was outside of his car when the victim walked past. The suspect approached her, asked for directions, then grabbed her by the shirt collar and tried to force her at gunpoint into his vehicle. The victim pushed the gun away, kicked the suspect and then ran westbound screaming for help. Officers checked video from surrounding businesses and were able to identify the type of vehicle and license plate number. Officers and detectives responded to the address of the registered owner and arrested Johnson. A preliminary hearing in the case is scheduled for Nov. 5.

also a viable service, “ Slover continued. Both the Silver Lake Rescue Squad and Fire Department will be first responders, handling issues of patient care until Town of Salem units arrive. Salem will pay Silver Lake Rescue Squad $30,000 annually for service to cover the current area of Salem and the Village of Silver Lake. Slover also said Silver Lake Fire Department members who wish to continue serving would need to apply to Salem Fire Department. Part of this application process is to develop personnel records and learn about the Silver Lake firefighters, what the department needs and what additional training is needed for each member. The Town of Salem fire chief or his designee will be the officer in charge of all incidences. They will be the ones who decide if advanced life support is needed.

The Salem Town Board approved contracts covering fire and emergency medical services for the Village of Silver Lake at a special board meeting Oct. 20. The first contract enables Salem to provide fire service to Silver Lake. The second contract allows the Sliver Lake Rescue Squad to continue providing services in Silver Lake and the Town of Salem Both contracts begin on Jan. 1 and will give Silver Lake residents a paramedic response to all medical calls. Town of Salem Fire and Rescue Chief Mike Slover said in a post-meeting interview, “Silver Lake Rescue is a viable EMS service. They already provide first response in the Town of Salem close to Silver Lake’s borders with the town and we had no intention of disrupting that.” “The fire department is

Sectors currently recognized within the Green Masters Program include construction, energy, retail and finance and insurance. Participating in this program gives Paddock Lake access to more resources that will allow the village to improve in all areas. The council hosts annual events to bring business and other leaders together to exchange best practices, sponsors programs designed to help businesses and organizations measure and track their progress, and prepares reports and case studies to help guide the sustainability conversation in Wisconsin.

ed that our village could do well. So I applied and we did do well.” Popanda completed the online application and the village scored 273 points. Areas covered included energy, carbon, waste management and education and outreach. The maximum achievable points is 604 and Popanda was pleased the village received 273 points in its first application to the program. One contributing factor was the distance that employees live from the workplace. Most employees live within 10 miles, making travel time and carbon emissions low. The application also asked for information on how employees were paid and what sort of benefits they received. Paddock Lake scored above the average for this category. Program scores were cal-

A first superintendent Upon her return to Kenosha in 1910 she was appointed Superintendent of the Kenosha Public School System, the first woman superintendent in the state and one of few woman superintendents in the nation. Bradford was known for many changes to the public school system, that today are standards in the school system. Kindergarten was instituted under her leadership. Special classes, including vocational classes and household arts were offered. Breakfast at school was made available for needy students. Perhaps because of her own inability to complete high school, Bradford added evening classes and summer classes to the public school calendar and introduced voca-

tional schools to the district. She added basic health and sanitation classes to the curriculum bringing in dentists and nurses to teach them. Instead of offering the same salary to all teachers, Bradford established a system that paid teachers based on their education and experience. She is also said to have begun a system of recordkeeping of each student’s classroom work. Bradford was an author who wrote many books on education. Her memoirs included much information on the growth of education in Wisconsin. In 1921, Bradford retired as superintendent with plans to travel the world. In honor of her work with the school system, Kenosha’s high school was named Mary D. Bradford High School and today has an enrollment of approximately 1,700 students. Bradford died in Kenosha on Feb. 3, 1943, at the age of 87. She is buried in Green Ridge Cemetery.

Within 30 days of the execution of the agreement, personnel from both Silver Lake Rescue and Salem Fire and Rescue will be trained to operate the equipment that each has and taught where each piece of equipment is housed. The training coordinators from both departments will develop orientation for new members to provide interoperability of each service’s capability. Both departments will also operate under the direction of the same emergency services director. Both services will work with the medical director to make sure medical protocol, patient care reporting, quality control and trainings are standard. Silver Lake Rescue will have authority to enter into mutual aid agreements with departments outside the jurisdiction of the Salem department. Silver Lake Rescue already provides services to the towns of Randall and Wheatland. This is another big change the current Silver Lake Village board has made. The first was signing a contract with Kenosha County Sheriff for police service and disbanding the Silver Lake Police Department. Policing costs have gone down in Silver Lake, but fire costs have risen. The annual fee paid by the village to the town will be $160,000 and reduced by $37,000 for 10 years for the purchase of equipment from Silver Lake. The town will also reduce the annual fee an additional $6,000 to cover rent for the fire station. Previously, the village had funded the fire department at about $50,000 a year. “The Silver Lake Fire Department has been underfunded for years,” Silver Lake Village President Bruce Nopenz said. “And a few years ago, the police department was half our budget. The costs are coming into line with how they should be.” “Now its up to us (the Village Board) to budget properly,” he said.

A single mother with children was moved from her car to a motel to temporarily house them while we found a more permanent solution to their homelessness. The children cried happy tears when they realized they did not have to sleep in the cold cramped car any longer. Several handicapped

individuals were provided rent assistance. One of these families is dealing with the father progressively losing more and more abilities as time goes by. Eventually he will lose his life to this disease that has not only affected him but his whole family. When he could no longer work the wife took on more hours. Now he is in need of round the clock care so the wife is only able to work limited hours when either the children or a nurse cares for the husband. The mother tirelessly works, cleans, cooks, lovingly cares for her husband and rarely sleeps. For this family, with two children still living at home,

to become homeless would be a tragedy. For us to allow it to happen would be shameful. We together made sure this and many other families remain safely in their shelter. Senior citizens and veterans did not know where to turn when they were given eviction notices. When they were referred to The Time Is Now to Help their lives were changed forever. We not only lifted their financial burdens, we lifted their hearts and spirits as well. As one senior woman told us, “I didn’t think anyone cared. You made me feel like I mattered again.” All life matters to us at The Time Is Now to Help. We all are creations of God

Last week we shared the good news that the Barnabas $61,500 matching grant was successfully matched. This week we are ready to share where every penny was spent in this matching grant to relieve the pains of poverty in our communities. We are filled with gratitude for the Barnabas donors and all of you who matched their generous donation. The need was great and all of you came together to answer the plea of the poor. Thank you and God bless you. The Barnabas donors and all of you made the following assistance possible:

Beds – $1,937 Two handicapped senior gentlemen were provided double beds after we learned from their caseworkers that they were sleeping on recliner chairs. A senior couple that is enduring some very difficult medical problems was provided with a muchneeded mattress. They told us that this bed is making their painful surgeries and treatments much easier to bear. A good restful night sleep is very important to our health and even a positive outlook. Thank you to the Barnabas donors and all of you for providing these health benefits and the positive attitude needed to get through tough times. Household necessities – $1,577.78 Together we have provided our fellow creations with blankets, towels, sheets, pillows, vacuums, cleaning supplies, dishes, pots and pans, light bulbs, and all the many items needed to make a house a home. When we move a family from a motel to an apartment there are usually many things needed. Our senior citizens and the handicapped are often using old and broken household items. Working poor families and single parents usually do not have the funds in their budget to

purchase these items. All of us together have made life easier for these people turning to us for desperately needed household necessities. Dental care – $1,687.25 Three people can again smile and eat without pain thanks to our caring dental assistance. A poverty stricken woman living with multiple disabilities was provided with her first dental care in many years. Three people were provided the dental assistance needed to remove their pain and restore a pain free quality of life. I know all areas of our assistance are appreciated but dental assistance has the added benefit of actually removing physical pain. School supplies – $768.10 Pens, pencils, paper, folders, glue, markers, crayons, calculators, backpacks, lunch boxes … The list of supplies needed for most children is long. If you do not have money for rent you certainly cannot buy these items either. Every child needs a chance to obtain an education. We want to encourage and inspire our children to put their best effort forward. A good education is essential in our fight against poverty. Our children wanting to go to school because they have the supplies they need is the beginning of this motivation to be educated. Preventing children from being discouraged and embarrassed due to their inability to purchase the school supplies they need is what all of you and the Barnabas donors have done. The children and all of us at The Time Is Now to Help thank you for your generosity.

For a working poor family or single mother choosing between homelessness, food, utilities, or toiletries, you know which items they are going to live without first. Many people

make the decision to do without these items every month. All of you and the Barnabas donors have allowed us to share these items with those that are doing without. People of all ages without a toothbrush or toothpaste will have to endure dental pain or suffer due to the dental disease that they cannot afford to treat. Personal hygiene is extremely important for employment. Babies should not have to do without clean diapers. Thank you for providing these most important toiletry items.

Handicap assistance – $3,520 A handicapped single mother was provided assistance with obtaining some of the tools needed to make her disability easier to manage. A senior citizen with disabilities was provided with help making her home more accessible so she could continue to live independently. A young cancer patient was given the assistance he needed so he could safely return home. A single mother that has a disability that often leaves her hospitalized was given the help she needed to be able to manage her disability at home. The handicapped in our communities struggle daily to live independently, all while paying for rent, food, cars and utilities. Caring for a handicapped child or spouse also puts our fellow creations at an increased risk for becoming poverty stricken. All of you and the Barnabas donors have made this struggle a little easier for these four fellow creations and their families.

Museum aims to preserve Walworth County’s military history By Kellen Olshefski • STAFF WRITER

I

n Elkhorn, the Walworth County Historical Society’s most recent addition, Heritage Hall, has become much more than just another location for the society; it’s a home to the war memorabilia of Walworth County’s veterans. Previously the Betts Funeral Home at the corner of Washington and Rockwell streets, the building now serves as a military museum, featuring a plethora of donated war memorabilia ranging from photos, models and medals to World War II uniforms and flags flown over Afghanistan. According to Walworth County Administrator David Bretl, the plan all came together shortly after the county aided the historical society in its purchase of the building, providing them with an about $100,000 interest-free loan to purchase the building that sits across the street from the society’s Webster House Museum and Doris Reinke Resource Center. Bretl said Bob Webster Sr., who ran the weekly Walworth County Support Our Troops Rally for a decade alongside his wife, Lavonne, had shown a great interest in finding a way to preserve Walworth County’s rich historical heritage. “He was really concerned because a lot of the memorabilia of war veterans was

ending up at rummage sales or even in the trash when the veteran passed away,” he said. Bretl said Webster was concerned with this, as many times families might not have understood the true significance of these types of items. Through his conversations with Bretl, Webster eventually made contact with Doris Reinke of the Walworth County Historical Society and, together, they were able to get the ball rolling on what is now Walworth County’s very own veterans museum. “I couldn’t think of two nicer people in the county beside Bob and Doris and the contribution they make,” he said. “They’ve really laid out a nice display there.” The community came together to create the museum, donating not only items to be

‘Lest we forget’ Civil War Museum memorial puts spotlight on commonality amongst the citizen soldiers

By Kellen Olshefski STAFF WRITER

As visitors arrive at the entrance of a dimly lit room at the Civil War Museum in Kenosha, a single label greets them saying, “Lest we forget.” When the Civil War Museum in Kenosha

opened in 2008, the idea was to focus on the seven Midwestern states that sent about 1 million soldiers off to the battlefields of the Civil War, making up about half of the Union Army. However, Executive Director Dan Joyce said as they planned the museum, talk turned

Just off to the side of the central fire pit at the Kenosha Civil War Museum, a statue of a World War II soldier faces a modern-day female soldier, as if the two are sharing and bonding over their stories. Executive Director Dan Joyce said it’s not uncommon for veterans of different eras who were strangers to each other when they walked in to engage in conversation, as if they’re joining the soldiers portrayed in the memorial.

as if they had fought side by side. Joyce said it has proven to be an emotional experience for many visitors, even bringing veterans together who might not have ever known each other otherwise to chat about and share their experiences, just as if they were a part of the memorial themselves. “It’s the commonality of experience,” Joyce said. “One might be a World War II or Korea vet and the other might be a Vietnam vet or even more recently. “I’ve seen that a few times in there and there’s kind of an instant bonding.” With no placards or explanations in the entire area, visitors are left to take in the memorial, experiencing it in their own individual ways. “Everybody thinks it’s wonderful,” he said. “They might not understand all the nuances of what we’re trying to put across, but they certainly get the effect of the memorial itself and feel that it’s effective in honoring the soldiers’ service. “It’s really all about remembrance of these individuals who have one way or another sacrificed or served their country.” As for Veterans Day, while Joyce said they’re not having a ceremony on Nov. 11, they will be holding a Veterans Day brick dedication at 11 a.m. on Nov. 7 on the terrace outside of the Civil War Museum. On that day, they’ll dedicate bricks to be placed in the terrace, which family, friends and loved ones have purchased and had engraved to honor the veterans in their lives. The Civil War Museum in Kenosha is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Saturday, and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays, with the exception of major holidays. There is no fee to visit the Veterans Memorial Gallery at the museum.

put on display, but time, services and money. However, it’s not just the historical significance that makes the museum special in it’s own right, but the strong local significance it holds. It’s stocked full of items with ties to local men and women who have served

their country. “I think the local connection is what makes it special,” Bretl said. “Many of the items in there have a local story from someone in the area who has served.”

Veterans Day 2015 This year, the Walworth County Historical Society will continue a new tradition with its third annual Veterans Day program to be held at 1 p.m. on Nov. 11 at Heritage Hall, 103 E. Rockwell St.,

Elkhorn. The keynote speaker for this year’s event will be retired U.S. Air Force Maj. Gen. Grant Mulder. Mulder joined the Air Force in 1964. He served in Vietnam and then was commander of the 64th Tactical Airlift Squadron. In addition,

he served as mobilization assistant to the director for logistics of the U.S. Atlantic Command retiring in June 2001. Mulder has received multiple military awards for his service. The program will conclude with the introduction of veterans or

current military personnel. The Walworth County Historical Society Veterans Museum will be open for visitors and refreshments will be served. For more on Heritage Hall and the Walworth County Historical Society, visit walcohistory.org.

to honoring all veterans of all wars throughout the years. And thus, the Veteran Memorial Gallery was born. Upon entering the room – a free memorial at the museum designed to simulate a starry night – it often takes visitors a moment for their eyes to readjust to the darkness. However, when their sight returns, they’re in the midst of a deeply moving statement. Monoliths line the wall, listing all of the major conflicts and wars the United States has been involved in over the years. Statues of soldiers from different eras, surround a faux-fire pit in the very center of the room with a group of Civil War soldiers. With an open layout, visitors are able to move in and amongst the figures and monoliths occupying the room. “This is a memorial, it’s not an exhibit,” Joyce said. “It’s very moody. We wanted to evoke emotion as people came in and observed what’s going on.” All of this, according to Joyce, is to not only honor America’s citizen soldiers, but to help visitors understand the commonality among the men and women who serve and have served this country since it’s fight for independence from the crown. “It’s about making people realize when you take the technology out of war, the experience is the same through time,” he said. “There’s a commonality of experience that’s no different from the Revolutionary War to today. Training, boredom, gossip, sharing a cup of coffee, being hungry, being cold, being afraid … it’s all the same no matter what, if you take away the technology.” Statues of soldiers from different eras stand side-by-side, face-to-face, as if they’re sharing their stories, bonding over their commonality

It’s a play where the actors and directors make mistakes, on purpose, for comedic value. That will be this year’s fall play production by 25 Wilmot Union High School students. The show is slated to open Nov. 5 “Play On” chronicles the adventures of a theater group attempting to produce a play in which everything that could go wrong, does. Faculty director Kareen Heelein, who is in her third year in the position, said the play will fill the school’s auditorium with laughter. “It is a comedy and it has been a lot of fun,” Heelein said. “There are three acts, and things just keep getting worse and worse.” The production, which chronicles, the rehearsal, dress rehearsal and the play itself, will be a murder mystery. All students will have an equal role, Heelein said. “It is a murder mystery, and at some point, the director does not even know there was a murder in her own play,” Heelein. Senior Jessica Baker will be the director on the auditorium stage. Baker, who was part of last year’s production, delivered a promise to those

who attend. “I love the comedy in it, I think it is really funny, and the audience is going to enjoy it,” Baker said. Baker acknowledged the biggest challenge is the memorization of all the lines. However, the challenge for sophomore Maggie Gerlach is adjusting to different tones of voice. Gerlach, who will perform the role of playwright Phyllis Montague, plans to perform unusual acts during the production. “I get to mess with people and be really annoying, and I find that very fun to do,” Gerlach said. “I get to enter in through the back of the auditorium and say all of these weird things.” Aside from the unorthodox behaviors of its bickering actors, interfering playwrights and frustrated director, the twisting and turning plot line could bring an unexpected result. “The whole thing is twisting and turning and, at the end, there will be a surprise,” Heelein said. The production written by Rick Abbott and produced by special arrangement with Samuel French, Inc., is slated for 7 p.m. Nov. 5 and 6 at the school auditorium. Additionally, there are
