Local veterans groups, schools plan observances
Veterans Day began after WWI, but honors vets of all wars
Here’s a look at local Veterans Day observances: Antioch According to Bill Oerly of the Antioch VFW Sequoit Post 4551, the Veterans Day program will be held on Friday, Nov. 11, at the VFW Post, 75 North Avenue, Antioch at 11 a.m. The program’s timing is in keeping the memory of the cessation of fighting in World War I, with the firing of weapons followed by the playing of taps. A Navy Commander is scheduled to speak. Following the official ceremony, hot dogs will be served in the VFW hall. The public is welcome to attend. The Antioch American Legion Post 748 will also hold a service on Friday. It will be held at Community High School, 1133 Main Street, Antioch, at 10 a.m. Organizers invite local veterans and their families to attend. The ceremony will last about one hour. Those interested may contact the Legion at (262) 359-1348 for further information.

Each year on Nov. 11, the nation celebrates Veterans Day. It is the holiday that recognizes the importance of those who have fought to preserve our freedoms throughout the years of our country’s existence. Veterans Day was first known as Armistice Day, a day to commemorate the end of World War I or as it was originally known, the Great War. A temporary cessation to the fighting was attained on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month in 1918, between the Allied Forces and Germany. This was not the official end of the war as the Treaty of Versailles, which signaled the war’s official end, was not signed by Germany and the Allied Nations until June 28, 1919. Allied interests were represented by British Prime Minister David Lloyd, French Premier George Clemenceau, and U. S. President Woodrow Wilson. For the families and soldiers, however, the end of the War remained Nov. 11 as that is when the fighting and killing ended. The holiday was first proclaimed as Armistice Day in November 1919. On this first Armistice Day business was halted at 11 a.m., just as the war halted at 11 a.m. on Nov. 11, to allow all to honor the service men.
