Traveling Closet returns
Hundreds of needy area residents (below) were on hand for the return of The Antioch Traveling Closet to the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Sunday. The purpose of the event is to offer to those in need a wide selection of donated clothing, toiletries, cleaning supplies that they can put to good use, all free of charge. At left: Volunteer Leah Meltzer teaches the importance of left vs. right when putting on shoes to Payton Cameron, 3, at the Antioch Traveling Closet. In addition to clothing and cleaning supplies, five hairstylists were available to offer free haircuts and members of the Lake County Campus Emergency Medical Services program offered free blood pressure readings. To find out more about the next Antioch Traveling Closet scheduled for April 2017, to volunteer, or to make a donation, email founder Lisa Fisher at lisa@limericklounge.com.

Inspired by their grandparents’ hobby of dealing antiques, the sister and brother duo of Heather Fenzel and Ben Purrazzo Jr. have carried on the tradition as co-owners of Family Heirloom Antiques in Antioch. Family Heirloom Antiques, 1098 Main St., opened six months ago following more than a year of restoration efforts on a home from the early 1900’s. “Our grandmother and grandfather were antique dealers, so my brother and I were raised going to flea markets, garage sales, estate sales.” said the 32-year-old Fenzel, who worked alongside her brother selling antiques out of malls and on their eBay website before an opportunity presented itself about two years ago. “And we decided, ‘Why don’t we do this on our own?” Fenzel said. “So then we purchased this property almost two years ago and then flipped it into an antique store.” The home-turned-store has a history of its own. The original owners bought the property in the late 1800’s. “It is considered an American

Christmas trees glow with family tradition By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
During the holiday season there are many activities to be completed before the main event, Christmas Day, arrives. There is shopping, baking and the most important activity of decorating the home. It is the Christmas tree that becomes the prime focus of home decoration as it requires the most work. So many decisions go into the tree. Will it be a live tree with the family taking a trip to a local tree farm and selecting a growing tree and cutting it down themselves? Or one purchased from a tree farm that has been harvested by them? There are so many types and sizes of trees including Douglas firs, Frazier firs, balsams, and spruce to name a few that are available for sale. Trees range in size from table top to 15 feet or more for those with high ceilings. Each family has its own preference and sometimes each person in the family tends toward a different tree. Artificial trees are the favorite of many families and especially for those who are displaying a Christmas tree in a business setting. Often fresh trees are prohibited in public places so the choice is really not a choice. For families that choose an artificial tree it is often a matter of bringing it up from the basement or down from the attic, removing the

Sailors from the Great Lakes Naval Station dig into their meals during the annual Christmas Dinner held in their honor at Antioch VFW Post 4551, 75 North Ave., Antioch, on Dec 4. They were a few of the 350 sailors along with 100 veterans from the Hines VA Hospital in Hines and the Lovell Federal Health Care Center in North Chicago who attended the fete. VFW members and volunteers were on hand to
serve the military personnel a dinner of ham, turkey, dressing, sweet and mashed potatoes, vegetables, dessert, and more. Dave Karczewski, owner of the village’s Piggly Wiggly, both supplied the menu items and managed preparation of the meal. The Tavern Owner’s Association of Lake and McHenry County once again sponsored the event.
The time is now to help
More people helped during holiday season we possibly can. Our volunteers make this possible. Your donations make all this possible. I have yet to find a day when I do not see the inequality of wealth in our world. For 27 years I have had it front and center in my life every day. What we do with the gifts we are given is a true measure of our integrity in this world. I am blessed to be surrounded by others of incredible integrity as well. I am extremely thankful for your part in making the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant a success and the many lives that will be touched by your generosity. Your donations will help us to spread the true meaning of Christmas to those most in need. Please consider donating to the Fox Charities 2016 Christmas wish $25,000 matching grant. Your funds continue to be desperately needed to provide the poverty stricken senior citizens, the handicapped, working

We all work together as a team that allows victory over poverty. While we cannot remove all pains of poverty, we certainly can help to ease those pains. We can use our energy to provide love, compassion and support. Our world is sorely in need of these attributes, and I am proud to be able to share them in our communities. We feel blessed and grateful that Richard Driehaus, the Fox Charities donors, the Barnabas donors and all of you help us to share this love and compassion to as many of our fellow Americans as

As we begin our busy holiday season filled with blessings, there are also many struggling to provide their families with basic needs. As I and my volunteers usually spend our time in both worlds we truly get to see the stark differences first-hand. While my volunteers dropped off food and other necessities to those living without, some commented how they felt blessed to have their own hot meals waiting for them at home. I have shared that same feeling of disparity over the past 27 years I have been bringing our caring and sharing assistance to those in need. To remove that disparity is what drives us to continue our good works. What helps to fuel my drive to bring our assistance to the senior citizens, the handicapped, the working poor and children in our communities, is knowing you are there beside me every step of the way. And that support is what has allowed us to successfully match the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant on Thanksgiving Day. How fitting to receive a call from a generous supporter that follows our good works even while visiting in California, called on Thanksgiving Day wanting to donate to our mission. His donation along with all of your donations will be allowing us to receive Richard’s matching funds that will bring so much help to our fellow creations in need. We cannot express how grateful we are to have received both the Richard H. Driehaus $30,000 matching grant opportunity and your donations that made this a success. This Thanksgiving we also have been blessed to have Fox Charities once more provide us with a new

four-square and it was finished in 1915,” said Fenzel. “The woman that we purchased it from, her grandfather built this home. She was born here with four other siblings, so there were seven people in this tiny home with one bathroom.” Purrazzo Jr., 33, estimates the original owners bought the property in 1870. Following restoration efforts, the two co-owners opened the business doors to customers, who are often surprised by their youthful appearance and the evolving inventory. “People don’t necessarily correlate our age with people that like antiques,” said Fenzel, who often learns from the customers who walk through the doors. “We have a gentleman who is very knowledgeable about fountain pens – there is a Fountain Pen Association, we would have never known that – so he comes in and tells us about the fountain pen and what we are looking for.”

Plenty of items From sports memorabilia, to sterling silver, glassware and clothing, the store boasts an extensive inventory throughout the former home. The outside features several concrete lawn ornaments, along with larger items housed in the garage showroom. Along with the outside, and interior items, there is
something for everyone, Fenzel said. “We have so much, and what is crazy is that this is not all we have,” Fenzel said. “We have two warehouses full of other things, so we bring in stuff every week.” Since they opened, Fenzel and her brother have swapped out inventory on four occasions, which usually gives customers a refreshed perspective when they return. “We have switched over four times, people come here twice a month, and see something different or something has changed,” said Fenzel. “We don’t want to be static, we want to keep the ball rolling in the direction of change.”
miscellaneous items, including clothing. “They should expect a really fun, family atmosphere, things are always changing and we have a wide variety of items,” said Fenzel. The family atmosphere includes Fenzel’s two children, Clark, who is 2 1/2 years old, and 4-month old Addison. Fenzel reports her son already knows how to a rotary phone works. “My son is probably the only 2-year-old that knows how to use a rotary phone,” she said. Another element of the business is that Purrazzo Jr. spends time fixing and restoring items brought in by customers.
Neatly structured Fenzel, also an interior designer, spends her time maintaining an orderly flow of the business, organizing all of the rooms according to historical era and categories. Along with the first floor living room, they have three second-floor bedrooms filled with a variety of items, including furniture. “(Customers) think it’s really clean and they like the organization,” she said. “There are three bedrooms upstairs. One room is for the ’50s and ’60s and then one is for all of the kitchen type of things, everything from China to porcelain, all the way up to sterling silver.” The third bedroom has
Online Even after the store closes at 5 p.m., business is still accessible online at their website, eBay or Etsy. “It’s almost like a 24-hour store,” said Fenzel. According to the eBay page, they have operated from the online auction website since 2012, and have drawn 68 positive reviews. Hours of operation are Wednesday through Sunday from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m. For more information, Family Heirloom Antiques is accessible at www.familyheirloomantiques.com, on Facebook at Family Heirloom Antiques along with eBay. cover and snapping the branches into place. The newer artificial trees are often able to be stored intact and often have the lights already in place saving a lot of time and work. A reflection of family While the trees decorated in homes in the Chain o’ Lakes area will most likely not be as large as the official trees or decorated with as many lavish ornaments as the official White House trees, the trees in the family homes of the area have a distinct advantage – they are decorated with family love and often share the ornaments that depict a lifetime history of the family. From ornaments created by the children to those purchased on family trips, and including ornaments from past generations, these eclectic trees provide a memory of Christmases of the past. In other homes a tree may have a specific theme, such as a Victorian motif, or one that depicts the family’s interest whether it be star wars, automobiles, trains, or miniature dolls. Whether elegantly or casually decorated, the tree celebrates the traditions of the family. A long history The tradition of the decorated Christmas tree was first described in the 1500s in Germany. The first trees decorated were not always evergreens but often other types of trees such as cherry trees and Hawthorne trees, which were more prevalent in the area. The early decorated Christmas trees were not in individual homes as we expect today but were outdoors using live trees. There was often one tree for a village or a church and the decorating would be shared by the community. The practice of lights on a tree did not begin until the 17th century and it was done with small candles attached to the branches. While the candles gave a beautiful glow to the trees, they also caused many fires. It was Thomas Edison’s assistant Edward Johnson who suggested using electric lights on the tree in the 1880s. The first mass-produced Christmas lights made their appearance in 1890. In the United States, it was in the 1900s that large department stores began to erect large illuminated Christmas trees to encourage shoppers to feel the joy of the season and encourage gift giving thus increasing revenue. The City of Chicago’s first official Christmas tree was in Grant

Park in 1913 and lit by the Mayor Carter Henry Harrison II. In New York, the famous Rockefeller Center tree first appeared in 1933. The New York tree since 2004 has been topped by a 500-pound Swarovski Crystal star and, since 2007, has been lit by 30,000 energy-efficient LED lights powered by solar panels. Presidential pines Nationally, Franklin Pierce was the first president of the United States to place a Christmas tree in the White House. Teddy Roosevelt banned the Christmas tree from the White House citing environmental concerns. President Coolidge began the National Tree Light-
ing Ceremony on the White House lawn in 1923. In 1963 the National Christmas Tree on the White House lawn remained dark until December 22, as the nation observed a 30-day period of mourning following the assassination of President Kennedy. Since 1966 the National Christmas Tree Association has given a Christmas tree to the president and first family for display in the Blue Room of the White House. The tree arrives by wagon and is met by members of the first family. The theme of the tree is determined by the First Lady working with a team of designers and the tree is decorated by volunteers following the design created.

Santa Claus, a.k.a., Mike Culat of Remax Realty in Antioch, explains his second thoughts about shaving off his beard so close to Christmas to hairstylists and part-time elves Terry Amanti (from left), Nichole Bustamante, and Melissa Trawin at the return of The Antioch Traveling Closet to the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Sunday. The event was an early Christmas present for those less fortunate courtesy of the organizer of the Traveling Closet, Lisa Fisher, and the many volunteers and contributors who work with her to make the affair a success. Sunday’s event, the fourth edition of the ATC, was again bursting with articles of clothing, including tables full of shoes and personal hygiene products. A total of five hairstylists offered free haircuts to all wanting to look their holiday best. Making their first appearance at the ATC were volunteers from St. Stephen Lutheran Church who collected and distributed household cleaning supplies, and members of the Lake County Campus Emergency Medical Services program offering free blood pressure readings. To find out more about the next Antioch Traveling Closet scheduled for April 2017, to volunteer, or to make a donation, email Fisher at lisa@limericklounge. com.

Moses Walugembe, of Uganda-based television network NBS, delivers a broadcast in front of the capitol in Washington, D.C.
Traveling journalist puzzled by election protests He contrasts U.S. vote with Uganda’s
By Gail Peckler-Dziki
CORRESPONDENT
“I knew that there would be free and open elections here,” Moses Walugembe, Ugandan television journalist who covered the recent U.S. presidential elections said in a recent interview. Walugembe, a 33-year-old news reporter for NBS Television in Uganda, was a media fellow at WKOW 27 in Madison, Wis., several years ago, when his formal introduction to U.S. He came through the Professional Fellows Program, a U.S State sponsored program, which brings together emerging leaders in the fields of legislative process and
governance, civic engagement, journalism, economic empowerment and entrepreneurship from around the world. Walugembe was covering the Clinton campaign on election night, and in turn, sent interviews with her supporters to Uganda. “Washington D.C. was completely silent,” he said, “when the election results came in.” Shortly after the election, the protests started, when he was still visiting Wisconsin. “I don’t understand why they are protesting,” he said. “There was an open election.” Elections in Uganda are different. Walugembe said the nation has been marred by turmoil since its independence from Britain in 1962. Yoweri Museveni, in power for 30 years, rules Uganda as president. Since its independence, Uganda has not had a peaceful transition of power, because
every leader who comes in ascends with the power of a gun. Museveni, who waged war against the Obote regime in 1981, has been re-elected every five years, having convinced the legislature to change the constitution regarding term limits. According to Walugumbe, In 2005, Museveni’s campaign paid each parliamentary member to vote to amend Article 105 of the Constitution to remove the presidential term limits. It was done in minutes. When opposition candidate Kizza Besigye attempted to campaign prior to the elections, police cracked down on reporters who attempted to cover that campaign. “I have been pepper-sprayed, tear-gassed and picked up by police and left to sit in a jail cell without being charged,” Walugumbe said. “It happens to all reporters,” he said. “And
their families are at high risk and threatened on politically motivated charges.” The Election Commission oversees the elections and President Museveni appoints the electors. Uganda uses only paper ballots, one for each office, which are placed in ballot box for counting later at the village level. “Sometimes people wait all day to vote,” he said, “only for the ballots to arrive at the polling place just before it closes.” There is no early voting in the clerk’s office in Uganda and no Ugandans who live outside the country may vote. After the votes are counted at the villages, they are transported to the Election Commission central counting location. And then the counts change, according to Walugembe, and Museveni and his colleagues win every time.
Man pleads guilty to lesser charge in sex assault case An area man charged with having sex with a 12-yearold girl in Lake Geneva, Wis., pleaded guilty last week to a lesser sexual assault charge. At a pretrial conference Nov. 29 in Walworth County, Wis., Circuit Court, Adam Michael Rhodes, 23, of Kildeer, Ill., plead-
ed guilty to second-degree sexual assault in lieu of facing trial on two charges of first-degree sexual assault and Adam Rhodes possession
of marijuana. Those charges were dismissed Nov. 29, and Rhodes is scheduled to be sentenced Feb. 27 on the second-degree assault charge, which carries maximum penalties of 40 years in prison and $100,000 in fines. According to the criminal complaint, the girl told a forensic interviewer that she
met a man she knew as Adam on a phone app called Kik Messenger with the account name “Daddy.” The girl said “Adam” told her he was 18 years old, and the two met twice in Lake Geneva and had sexual intercourse each time, according to the complaint. On the first occasion, Oct. 9, 2015, she said, “Adam”
picked her up in a silver car and they parked in the Badger High School parking lot and had sexual intercourse and oral sex in the car, according to the complaint. On the second occasion, Oct. 14, 2015, she said, “Adam” picked her up in a different car and they parked near the Showboat Theater and had sex in the car,
according to the complaint. A detective logged into the girl’s Kik Messenger account and arranged to meet “Daddy” at Big Foot Beach State Park on Oct. 19, 2015. Rhodes arrived in the second vehicle the girl described, and marijuana was found in the car he was driving, according to the complaint.

The holiday letter Greetings! Like the Terminator, we are back! You may have missed our holiday letter last year because we didn’t send one. We weren’t trying to be naughty and I hope our lack of communication didn’t get us knocked off your Christmas card list. In case it did, I am sending our greetings early this year so you will have time to fire off a card to us after receiving ours. Our lack of holiday note last year was due to a family vacation. You may have seen the 547 photos we posted on Facebook chronicling our adventure. It was an exhausting trip. I spent so much time taking and posting pictures I hardly had the chance to enjoy the

beach or my family. I planned to send a card out after the New Year, but since I took the time off for vacation, I had to play catch up with work. Luckily the trip gave me lots of writing ideas. You probably read about some of them here. I thought about sending a Valentine’s letter, but one of the kids caught the flu. Then another. And another. And so on. By the time it was time for me to get sick, the entire long month of
February had passed and March was marching in like a lion. This year, we’re all getting flu shots. Maybe you saw the statistics I posted about the efficacy of immunizations. I considered sending a spring greetings card, but we had toilet and laundry issues and I didn’t think anyone would want to read about them – although they did make for column fodder. I’m not sure about the logic there and probably don’t want to go into a big explanation. Let’s just say we are glad to be flushing again. Before I knew it, June rolled around and we were planning for high school graduation. (Yes, they let
number three graduate!) I sent out announcements, and surely hope you received one. Still, a simple graduation announcement cannot take the place of an informative holiday card, so my apology continues. After high school comes real life. Or in our case, a wedding. Not for the graduate, but for his big sister. I would have sent out a late summer holiday greeting, but for the plethora of tasks involved with planning a wedding. (That’s a letter in and of itself.) Hopefully you were able to check out the 1,000+ photos we posted on Facebook. It would have been hard to narrow them down to a few hundred; it was such a big,
real estate
big day. I now consider myself an expert in cupcake preparations. After the wedding I took a few weeks to recover and eat leftover cake. Besides, school was starting and I had to buy a bunch of glue, number 2 pencils and peanuts (for the squirrels). I help the kids prepare for class and the critters prepare for winter. As the autumn leaves were blowing, I (along with the rest of the nation) found myself in the middle of a highly contested, highly opinionated election season. I got so tied up in being swayed and influenced by online political articles (fake and true), postings and rants that I missed my last best chance to get last year’s holiday letter in the

mail. That brings me to present day and I guess I officially missed the holiday note last year because it is now this year. In 2016 we’ve been good. We had a graduation and a wedding, which you probably already figured out. We added a son-inlaw to our family and are planning another trip in the near future. Don’t worry. I’ll post photos.
