The family was one of many who attended one of the two breakfast sessions that were held. The event was co-sponsored by the golf club and the Antioch Parks and Recreation Department. Each child had a chance to meet with Santa Claus. A reprise of the event will be held Dec 12 at the same location with three separate breakfast times scheduled. Prior to 1939, the 88 acres that is now Lake Antioch was pastureland and slough. In 1939, Bill Brooks and some other area business leaders collaborated to develop the area into Lake Antioch. Lake Antioch is fed mainly by storm water run-off and the main inlet comes from property on Beach Grove Road. The Friends of Lake Antioch is a non-profit homeowners association that has cared for Lake Antioch since the late 1990’s. This man-made lake provides benefits to the surrounding area. According to Ken Adamski, previous president of the Friends of Lake Antioch and manager of the current project to stabilize the dam that runs near Harden Street, “Without the dam that created it, the storm water that flows through the area would take out Harden Street, Route 59 and the main lift station that serves 500 homes in Antioch.” In 2010, the Friends of Lake Antioch learned that animals burrowing into the

847-395-6216

earthen dam in Lake Delton, Wis., ruined the dam. The group launched an investigation into the Lake Antioch earthen dam that is on the northwest side of Harden Street and discovered the same problem. In 2011, the Friends of Lake Antioch discovered damage to the outflow culvert that goes through the dam and completed the repair in 2012 with help of partial funding from the Lake County Storm Water Management Commission. In 2013, heavy April rains caused the lake to rise and the dam wads overrun by the rising lake and the water began to cut a path across the top of the dam at a low spot. Friends of Lake Antioch members responded with a sandbag repair, averting a possible breach. Adamski said, “This was the same rain event that caused the loss of Wolf Lake in the Bong Recreation area in Wisconsin. Their lake was comparable in size also with an earthen dam and was lost

To reduce the risk of illness, the Lake County Health Department Community Health Center and public health departments across the state are encouraging residents to get a flu shot during Vaccinate Illinois Week, through Dec. 12. Vaccinate Illinois Week is a statewide observance focused on educating the public about the importance of flu vaccine during the fall and winter months. “Influenza is a serious disease that can lead to hospitalization and sometimes even death,” said Tony Beltran, Executive Director of the Lake County Health Department. “The single best way to protect against the flu is to get vaccinated each year.” Public health officials recommend that everyone 6 months of age and older should be vaccinated against influenza, especially pregnant women, young children, people 65 years of age and older, and anyone with underlying health conditions like asthma, diabetes, or a weakened immune system. A flu vaccine is

needed every year because flu viruses are constantly changing. “Flu vaccination can reduce the risk of more serious flu outcomes, like hospitalizations and deaths,” said Karyn Lyons, an advanced practice nurse and coordinator of the Health Department’s Immunizations Clinic. Several flu vaccine options are available for the 20152016 flu season, including traditional flu vaccines made to protect against three flu viruses (called trivalent shots), and vaccines made to protect against four different flu viruses (called quadrivalent shots). An egg-free shot for those who have egg allergies has also been approved for people 18 years of age and older. People with flu can spread it to others as far as six feet away. Most experts think that flu viruses are spread mainly by droplets made when people with flu cough, sneeze or

Fire displaces eight residents Turkey fryer is cause of Spring Grove blaze

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

A three-alarm blaze in the Village of Spring Grove left eight people displaced, with total damages estimated at $250,000, according to fire officials. The fire, attributed to an unattended turkey fryer, occurred shortly before 2:30 p.m. Nov. 29, required nearly two-dozen departments from Northern Illinois and Southern Wisconsin. Robert Tobiasz, Spring Grove Fire Chief, said the 6316 Johnsburg Road property was a challenge and needed mutual aid. “Many of them were called for water, as this is a rural area with no hydrants and a very large building,” Tobiasz said. The building, which was formerly a three-story dairy barn, was recently converted to a single-family home. According to Tobiasz, the

homeowner heated cooking oil in the tool room, formerly a milk house. That area of the home now has a second story connecting it to the kitchen area. The fire began on the lower level, spreading to the second floor of the tool room, and trickled into the main portion of the home. After the owner fell asleep, smoke became visible from a neighbor’s home, who then alerted the man and his family to evacuate the building. “There were no injuries or fatalities,” Tobiasz said. “Eight people have been displaced. The Red Cross came to the scene to assist with living arrangements for the owner and his family.” The owner’s insurance company and the McHenry County Planning and Development Department will determine whether the home is a total loss.

Search finds body of missing man, 69 An 8-hour search of a mixed-use area north of McHenry on Dec. 1 resulted in the finding of a body matching the description of a 69-year-old mentally handicapped man who had been reported missing from his home along the Fox River the previ-

The time is now to help

Turkey dinner donation brightens lives We would like to say a big thank you to Dimitri and Michael Anagnos, owners of Popeye’s on Lake Geneva for their generous Thanksgiving contributions of time and food. Dimitri personally spent the day cooking 10 full turkey dinners for clients of The Time Is Now to Help. Their generosity to those in need in our communities was greatly appreciated by those who would have done without. We would like to share with you a few of the people who were helped by this generous donation of delicious food. After meeting Dimitri at Popeye’s, taking several photos for the newspaper and social media, and loading the 10 boxes of full turkey dinners in the back of my truck, I was off to my first delivery. Each box contained enough food for six to eight people including turkey, mashed potatoes, gravy, corn casserole, coleslaw, rolls and pumpkin pie. It was a veritable feast for those who usually can only afford cheap canned foods or fast food. What was even better was that it was already cooked so those living in motels without access to an oven could still enjoy a home-cooked turkey meal. Most families had enough for several days’ meals. My first stop was to a local motel where several people are receiving emergency shelter by The Time Is Now to Help. These are people who lost their homes, and now we are helping them to find employment and set a budget that will allow them to afford their own rental. They are fellow creations of all ages in need of our compassion. I knocked on the door of a recently evicted family of six – four children and two parents. The children’s eyes danced with excitement when they saw and smelled the box of food. They hadn’t seen that much food for one meal in a very long time. I watched as the mother prepared each plate and warmed them in the microwave one at a time. While very grateful the mother commented, “I hate not having any food or an oven to cook for my

fears being hungry again. With a promise to come back in a few days for other assistance needs I had noted and to bring more food, I was on my way again. My next stop was to a family with three young children. This family was living in a different mobile home park, but they had many of the same needs. The father had been without work because of illness and had caused this family to fall on hard times. The mother was working when she could between caring for her husband and young children. It was not enough to keep them from falling behind in their bills and making Thanksgiving dinner much too expensive to prepare. The children crowded around their box of food and there was a cheer when I showed them the pumpkin pie. One of the children said, “That is my favorite food at Thanksgiving dinner. I never thought someone would give us my favorite pie.” Everyone laughed at this child’s observation. After checking in with the husband who was resting in the adjacent room, and again declining to join the family in their turkey dinner, I went to deliver my remaining half box I had split for the senior gentleman. This last visit was to a widowed senior woman

• Time is now Dimitri who cooked all this food at his restaurant, Popeye’s. When I pulled out the contents of the box one by one she exclaimed, “I can’t believe he cooked all this food. I haven’t had a Thanksgiving meal in years.” How sad that one of our fellow creations had not eaten a Thanksgiving meal in years. Not only that, she did not even have anyone to eat it with. This time when she offered to share some of her meal I accepted, telling her just a little, because I did not want her to eat alone. After the food was warmed, we sat and ate. I watched as she ate, smiling when she continued to say, “Mmmm,” with every bite. When she offered me some leftovers to bring home I declined telling her she could eat that for the next few days and share with her beloved pets. I had watched as she slipped both the dog and cat

turkey tidbits throughout the meal, knowing she probably shared all her food with them. I made a note to send a volunteer with groceries in a few days and some pet food. I asked about her bills and she showed me her utility bills and a recent dentist visit she was trying to pay on. I took these from her and told her not to worry, knowing she did not have enough for all these things. She hugged me when I left, with fresh tears in her eyes again. Her parting words were, “Tell that wonderful Dimitri thank you for that delicious Thanksgiving meal. I haven’t eaten anything that good in years. And make sure you spend some time with your family. You never know when they will all be taken from you.” I hugged her again knowing it had probably been years since she had even felt a hug. Then I

went to do exactly what this senior woman told me to do. I went home to share the remainder of this day of Thanksgiving with my loved ones. Hunger is felt every day, not just on holidays. Homelessness is traumatic every day, not just on holidays. Basic needs are needed every day, not just on holidays. We are most grateful for all of you who support our mission to remove the pains of poverty not just during the holidays but every day of the year. You are our blessing, our Thanksgiving. God bless you for your support of our mission and all our good works we accomplish together. Health and happiness, God bless everyone, W.C./ Sal Please help: There are many coming to us in desperation. Our good

fellow creations need our compassion. Together we make a big difference. Make checks payable to The Time Is Now to Help, P.O. Box 1, Lake Geneva, WI 53147. Dickens statues beheaded Baseball bat beatings lead to murder charges Two $1,000 reward offered in vandalism case

A mother and son are dead and another woman was injured after a Beach Park man allegedly beat them with a metal baseball bat in a domestic abuse incident Nov. 29. Armando Trejo, Jr., 47, of the 10200 block of West Bairstow Avenue, Beach Park, was transported to the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigations Division after police responded to a 911 call and found a blood-spattered crime scene. Trejo allegedly admitted to Lake County sheriff’s detectives he struck his wife, Lailani Uy Trejo, 43, and her son, Patrick K. Cruz Uy, 14, numerous times on the head and body with a baseball bat. Lake County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Technicians processed the crime scene. A metal baseball bat containing what appeared to be blood and other evidence was collected at the scene. Armando Trejo has been charged with two counts first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. He is currently being held in the Lake County Jail on a $5 million bond. According to various reports, authorities believe Armando Trejo was beating his wife with the bat when his mother, 68,

attempt to intervene and was subsequently struck and suffered a broken arm. Trejo’s stepson then attempted to stop him and was beaten to death, authorities allege. According to the Lake County Sheriff’s office: On Nov. 29, at approximately 2:45 a.m., Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to the residence owned by Trejo’s parents. Sheriff’s deputies discovered five people inside the residence. Two of Armando Trejo them – a woman and her son – were deceased. Both had obvious signs of significant trauma and both appeared to be victims of a homicide, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Trejo’s mother was transported to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries. She has since been released. Trejo’s father was also in the residence at the time of the incident, but due to medical limitations was not involved in the altercation, according to reports. Trejo’s next court date is Dec. 22, at 1:30 p.m. in Lake County courtroom C-120.

Ken Adamski, previous president of Friends of Lake Antioch and manager of the current project to stabilize the dam that runs near Harden Street, stands on the flat area created when the Lake Antioch earthen dam was repaired and stabilized. The group is seeking a variance to construct a chain link fence to keep trespassers out.

• Lake Antioch in less than 24 hours. It is now a prairie.” So the group raised half of the approximate $50,000 needed to undertake the project to stabilize the dam. The other 50 percent came in a matching grant from the Illinois Department of Natural Resources. Now that the project is complete, there is a flat and easy way for trespassers to enter the lake and the Friends of Lake Antioch group wishes to put up a six-foot-high, 50-foot-long fence along the

Since Antioch ordinances prohibit any fence to be built on a lot without a primary building, the group must apply for a variance at a cost of about $2,500. There are 200 homes in the 100-acre watershed area, half on the water and half with water rights. All the land around the lake is privately owned, providing no public access to Lake Antioch.

These members pay annual dues for the Friends of Lake Antioch total budget of about $14,000. Approximately $10,000 to $12,000 is spent every year for weed treatment. The rest is spent on algae treatment and administration costs. Volunteers provide labor. The Friends of Lake Antioch came into being in 1999 and since that time the group has put $300,000 into protecting and preserving Lake Antioch, according to members.

Silo fire caused by composting effect No injuries reported on Salem property

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Authorities ruled a silo fire on a Town of Salem farm Nov. 29 was a result of a composting effect. The contents of the 70-foot-tall silo were smoldering, based on reports from the owners of the property in the 23300 block of 60th Street near highways EW and K. Town of Salem Fire and Rescue responded to the first call shortly after 11 a.m., After assessments, they deployed the Mutual Aid Box Alarm System, citing the structure size. “We needed tankers and everything seemed to work out really well,” said Mike Murdock, Town of Salem Battalion Chief. The eight total tankers, including of one each from Burlington, Paris, Twin Lakes, Randall and Silver Lake needed nearly four hours

and about 60,000 gallons of water to extinguish the blaze. Kansasville provided an engine truck while Randall officials assisted with a ladder truck. Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputy Christopher Schneider, who responded to the blaze at about 12:30 p.m., said there was no evidence of foul play. “There really was nothing suspicious about it,” Schneider said. “It just took awhile to put out.” Schneider said there were no injuries to people or farm animals. The property owners needed to move cattle a few feet to open the property to fire officials. “There was an area south of the silo that had cows,” Schneider said. “They just had to move the cattle back to get our equipment in,” Murdock said.

Firefighters from Randall watch as their ladder truck pours water on a smoldering silo fire in the Town of Salem Nov. 29. The blaze was caused by a “composting effect” of the silo’s contents, according to officials.

New home loan program offered for veterans The Wisconsin Housing and Economic Development Authority has authorized $10 million to fund VALOR, a new reduced home loan interest rate program for qualified veterans. The Veterans Affordable Loan Opportunity Rate, or VALOR, home loan program is now available on a first-come, first-served basis through WHEDA’s network of participating lenders.

“Veterans who choose to make Wisconsin their home after completing their military service now will have an easier time owning their own home thanks to this new program,” said Wisconsin Department of Veterans Affairs Secretary John A. Scocos. “This program is yet another example of how Wisconsin is the most progressive state in the nation for veterans’ benefits and helps our veterans

realize their own part of the American dream.” Eligibility requirements for the VALOR home loan program include: • Must be a military veteran with an honorable discharge or release; • the property must be owner occupied for the life of the loan; • borrowers cannot own any other residential property; • first-time homebuyer re-

The Kenosha History Center is decorated and celebrating the holidays with new exhibits throughout the museum. The spotlight exhibit, “Back to the 20s,” features the 95th Anniversary of Snapon Tools and includes eight vehicles and memorabilia

from the 1920s. The center will also celebrate the opening of the 1960s Snap-on garage, which includes a 1965 Rambler American. Other new exhibits include an pipe display and a private collection of antique radios. Some owners of the 1920s ve-

hicles and memorabilia will be present to answer questions about the exhibit. There will be an area for children’s hands-on activities. The area will feature discovery boxes with items that range in time frame from pioneer times up until the 1950s.

Residents living along the Fox River in Kenosha County dodged a bullet late last month when a flood warning didn’t materialize. The Fox River did not reach flood stage as anticipated Nov. 28, resulting in the National Weather Service canceling the flood warning issued a day earlier. The flood warning followed two inches of rain k that caused the River to reach 9-1/2 feet. Meteorologists anticipated that the river would eclipse 11 feet by Nov. 28, affecting properties along the river in the towns of Wheatland and Salem and the Village of Silver Lake.

However, the River stayed a shade below 11 feet at 10.9 inches. “We were expecting the River to reach flood stage by (Nov. 28), but it reached 10.9 feet,” said Sarah Marquardt, Meteorologist of the NWS in Sullivan.

Initial projections on Nov. 27 reported that the river would crest at 12.2 feet. Marquardt said floodwater forecasts are unpredictable. “The River flooding forecast is very tricky, with recent rains we expected it would rise,” she said.

Baseball bat beatings lead to murder charges A mother and son are dead and another woman was injured after a Beach Park man allegedly beat them with a metal baseball bat in a domestic abuse incident Nov. Cruz Uy, 14, numerous times on the head

and body with a baseball bat. Lake County Sheriff’s Office Evidence Technicians processed the crime scene. A metal baseball bat containing what appeared to be blood and other evidence was Armando Trejo collected at the scene. Armando Trejo has been charged with two counts first-degree murder and one count of aggravated battery. He is currently being held in the Lake County Jail on a $5

22, at 1:30 p.m. in Lake County courtroom C-120.

if you cannot attend a clinic, call the Health Department at (815) 334-4510. The department of health offers the following information regarding the flu vaccine: • Fact: Even if you never feel sick, being exposed to the flu germ means you can get others sick. According to the Harvard School of Public Health, 20 to 30 percent of people who carry the influenza

virus never experience symptoms, yet they are still contagious. To quote Dr. Claire McCarthy, Faculty Editor for Harvard Health Publications, “You … might weather the flu just fine, but you could easily pass it to others around you. Vaccination doesn’t just protect you; it protects everyone around you. By getting the flu shot, you can literally save lives.”

Remains of meth lab found in area

How lovely are your branches – whack! JILL PERTLER Columnist

traumatize the entire forest with this murderous chatter, dad takes the axe and takes action. Talk about brutality – right in front of the children (and often family pets). A quick kill would be bad enough but prolonging the agony is another part of the merriment. After chopping down the innocent tree, dad drags it out of the woods and mounts it on the top of the family minivan with twine and bungee cords. The family heads for home, traveling 60 miles per hour on the Interstate while the bitter wind whips through the tree’s branches, threatening to pull them apart limb from limb. Inside the warm and cozy vehicle the family sings “Oh Christmas Tree” and “Joy to the World.” The irony of this

suddenly one morning and tears the colorful wrapping from the packages. Not one gift is left for the tree and in a final act of torture, the family drinks eggnog and forgets to give the evergreen any water that day. The tree, sapped of any energy and overcome with despair, begins dropping its needles. In response, the family (usually dad or mom) drags the tree out to the backyard where it sits until February or March when, in a blaze of glory, it is burned in a bonfire while the children roast marshmallows over its flames. ‘Tis the season of joy – unless you are an evergreen. Then, it’s a season of torment and terrible treatment of trees. You probably never thought of it that way. But I bet you would – if you were a tree. Jill Pertler is an awardwinning syndicated columnist, published playwright and author. She invites readers to follow the Slices of Life page on Facebook.

is not lost on the Scotch pine riding atop the van. Once home, the tree is propped in a vertical fashion in the living room where the family bedecks and bedazzles its branches in gaudy fashion with bows and garlands. In an ultimate act of humiliation, a star or other such adornment is ceremoniously placed on the treetop of our simple woodland giant and a mad celebration ensues – for everyone but the tree. At this point, the overt abuse ends, but the suffering continues as the tree is left to die a slow and tortuous death, the immediacy of which is postponed by daily doses of water administered in quantities just large enough to keep it alive – but barely. In the coming days, bright and festive boxes and bags are placed at the tree’s base. The tree, in its weakened and fragile state goes out on a limb and hopes perhaps the gifts are for him. Reality hits when the family descends upon the living room

It’s the time of year dreaded by spruce and pine alike. People take to the malls to hunt for bargains, but they also take to the grocery store parking lot to hunt for freshly slaughtered Fraser firs. It’s open season on evergreen trees and unlike forest critters with legs and camouflage capabilities, the trees have nowhere to hide. I’ve witnessed the tree victimization practice for decades and typically participate in the violence myself. Parking lots offer the perfect tree for the taking but some over-achieving families seek to intensify the hunt by carrying through with the actual execution themselves. They venture into the woods, engaging in what they call “quality family time,” while dad just happens to be carrying an axe. Mom and kids loudly and enthusiastically discuss the pros and cons of various specimens: balsam or blue spruce, tall or short, thin or stout and wasn’t last year’s tree the best ever? After they

While searching for a man who was wanted on a probation warrant Nov. 23, police discovered the remains of a methamphetamine laboratory in Bloomfield, Wis. The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office, the Walworth County Drug Enforcement Unit and the Village of Bloomfield Police Department were given information that Nathaniel L. Bailey, 31, was wanted on a felony apprehension request through the Wisconsin Department of Corrections probation and parole office. Officers went to Bailey’s residence at W850 Myrtle Road in the Village of Bloomfield, and searched the house, but did not find Bailey. However, deputies located the remains of a meth lab cook, according to the sheriff’s department. Deputies requested the Drug Enforcement Agency Clandestine Lab Team respond for clean up, and the Walworth County Circuit Court granted a search warrant for the residence. During that time, deputies received information that Bailey was at Walmart in Lake Geneva where he was taken into custody on the Department of Corrections warrant, according to the sheriff’s department. In the search of Bailey’s house, the DEA Clandestine Lab Team recovered paraphernalia used to manufacture meth and 16 grams of methamphetamine. Charges will be forwarded to the District Attorney’s Office against Bailey for possession of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine waste, manufacturing of methamphetamine, possession of methamphetamine paraphernalia and maintaining a drug house.

Area antique shops offer one-of-a-kind shopping

By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

What to get for the person who has everything? It depends where you look and there are several places in Western Kenosha County that might have that special item for a gift or Christmas decor. Here’s a look at several area specialty shops: Every cloud has one Silver Linings Consignment opened last July 4 in Silver Lake at the corner of East Lake Street and South Second Street. Proprietor Moira Toner was ready for the change from the corporate world to a world of her own. “I spent 20 years working in technology, marketing and public relations,” she explained, “and I prefer working for myself and with my team of consigners and great friends.” She spent a few years, working in a bed and breakfast on Mackinac Island, surrounded by vintage and antique items. Her sister, Shauna Dietz, was an antique dealer who left her indelible imprint on Toner. She has jumped into her business and the community with both feet, promoting the Silver Lake Commerce Club and other area businesses while putting heart and soul into her shop. Since Silver Linings is consignment, she able to pick and choose what customers see in her shop. “I try to say yes to everything,” Toner said, “but make sure my customers have quality choices.” The discerning shopper will find vintage and collectibles merchandise at prices ranging from $2 to $2,500. Toner recently highlighted some choice items for possible Christmas gifts. The shop has a Halston mink vest. “That was quite a find,” Toner said, “and its in perfect condition.” A Red Riding Hood cookie jar is a copy of a classic 1930’s cookie jar and reasonably priced. The Three Little Pigs are depicted in copper over plaster. For the table, there is a milk glass luncheon set and a Stetson Queen Anne pattern china set decorated with 22 Karat gold. Silver Linings also features handmade items by Wisconsin craftsmen. You will find crocheted slippers, dishcloths, hot pads as well as goat’s milk soaps and lotions. Tired of the same old gift-wrapping? Silver Linings has different types of boxes, baskets and other types of packaging to make gifts stand out under the tree. Silver Linings is open Thursday and Friday from 4 to 9 p.m., Saturday from 10 a.m. until 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 9 p.m. You can visit the Silver Linings Facebook page or call (331) 422-9333 for more information.

ters Barb Fischer-Galley and Mary Fischer-Tracy, advertise their establishment as a unique shop full of vintage antiques, vintage home decor and furniture. Like Toner, Fischer-Galley and Fischer-Tracy quit corporate jobs and started Piccadilly in January 2013 in Silver Lake, in the same building that is now home to Silver Linings. The sisters were successful and moved to a larger space in a schoolhouse at 7427 156th Avenue, at the intersection of Highways 50 and MB in Bristol in May 2014. The move gave Piccadilly more indoor and outdoor space and the three floors of space hold many styles of furniture, vintage items, antiques, collectibles such as Fenton glass and items crafted by folks from your hometown.
