Rita (from left, played by Jaime Churchill), Samantha (Gwen Shehorn), and Muffet (Samantha Hawley) rehearse a scene from PM&L Theater’s production of “Uncommon Women and Others.” The play will open at PM&L Theatre, Antioch, on Jan. 29 and will run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for three weeks. The play is a dramatic comedy telling the story of alumnae from Mount Holyoke College meeting for lunch in 1978 to talk about their experiences – some raunchy, others sobering. Regina Reynolds (previous PM&L directing credits include “Censored on Final Approach” and “Once Upon a Mattress”) directs. Tickets are available online at www.pmltheatre.com and are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve tickets directly through the box office, call (847) 395-3055.
St. Ignatius Episcopal is the oldest church in Antioch and still a vital part of the community. The parish partners with St. Stephen Lutheran and the Antioch Methodist Church to coordinate numerous activities. And St. Ignatius operates God’s Will Resale Shop, which provides clothing and household items to the needy at a discount price or with a voucher from an area charitable group. The church’s website explains it this way: “Our mission is to raise money for outreach programs in the Lake County Illinois area. We are run by members of the St. Ignatius Episcopal Church of Antioch. Donate where it makes a difference in the community through our ministry and outreach. Our selection is updated weekly so you never know what treasures you may find.” Many people shop there,

Built on prayer and a promise Two local chapels are steeped in history

Driving through the Village of Johnsburg, it’s difficult not to notice a small white building on the corner of Ringwood Road and Wilmot Road. Placed alone at the corner of a field, devoid of decoration except for a small cross topping the building and a plaque from the McHenry County Historical Society designating this building as an historical landmark, the chapel looks much the same as it did when built in 1878. The history of this chapel begins long before it was built. The story begins in the mid 1800s when Peter and Maria Nett Miller made their home in the area that was to become Johnsburg. Like many of the German immigrants who settled this area they made their living by farming, an arduous life that required hard work by the couple and their children. As the children grew, they took their place beside their parents in the fields. The family was blessed with six children: John, Anna Marie, Marie, Catherine, Justin, and Matthew. Unexpectedly, Peter died in 1863 leaving Maria with children to raise and a farm to manage. Being a religious person, Maria took on the task while asking for God’s help. It is said that one day while
working in the fields, she prayed to the Blessed Virgin Mary and asked for her intercession with God to allow her to raise her children “in the fear and love of God.” In return she promised to build a chapel. The years passed and Maria’s children grew up. Her oldest son, John, took over the farm and remembering Maria’s promise to build a chapel, gave her a plot of land for the chapel. In 1878, just 15 years after the death of Peter, Maria’s promise came to fruition as the small chapel was built on the land given to her by John. The chapel is simply decorated with a main altar. A large statue of Mary the Mother of God is surrounded by other statues of Mary. A white pew and several benches line the center of the chapel with two side pews. The chapel is small – nothing more than a place to reflect and pray. It is said that people still bring their petitions to the chapel to ask for Mary’s intercession with God. Family gatherings While writing the book, “Johnsburg and Pistakee Bay,” I met with several descendants of the Miller family who shared their family traditions, which centered on the Miller Chapel. According to Trudy Schuch

Four area men drown on Wisconsin lake They went canoeing in middle of the night, never returned
By Tracy Ouellette STAFF WRITER
Four men from the Winnetka area drown Jan. 3 on a southern Wisconsin lake after taking a canoe out on the frigid water in the middle of the night, according to authorities. The body of the fourth and final man who went missing in Mill Lake in East Troy, Wis., was recovered Friday afternoon, according to a press release from the Walworth County Sheriff’s Office. He was identified as Patrick M. Wetzel, 21. Two of the bodies were recovered the afternoon of Jan. 3 and have been identified by as Lanny Patrick Sack, 20, and Christopher J. McQuillen, 21. The third body, recovered Jan. 4, was identified as Mori Weinstein, 21. Mill Lake is on northern end of the Lake Beulah chain of lakes in East Troy township. According to authorities investigating the drownings, friends last saw the four men at about 2 a.m. Jan. 3. They had been staying at a home on Lake Beulah in a group of about a dozen friends and had been drinking before they disappeared, said Wisconsin De-
partment of Natural Resources Warden Jason Roberts. “We talked to everyone in the house and the witnesses stated they were all drinking,” Roberts said. “They were together at a friend’s lake house.” Roberts didn’t say alcohol was the cause of the tragedy but said it was probably a factor. “It takes a special skill set to survive in 34-degree water and none of these men had those skills,” he said. “And they weren’t wearing personal floatation devices, which should always be worn when on the water.” When the friends at the house realized the four men hadn’t returned by about 11 a.m., they called the police, Town of East Troy Police Chief James Surges said at a press conference held Jan. 3. Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources led the investigation into the drownings, assisted by Walworth County Sheriff, the Town of East Troy Police Department and the Walworth County Medical Examiner, according to a press release from the DNR. A lesser person might find this discouraging. Not me! I am optimistic about my goal-setting and maybe even someday goal-completing capabilities. So what if I’ve been losing the same 10 pounds since the last century? At least I’m goal-driven and goal-oriented. That should count for something. I suppose it does, just not on the bathroom scale. As with most things in life, my husband and I have differing opinions about resolutions. I adopt them; he ignores them. In his eyes, resolutions are a waste of time. He doesn’t need no stinking resolution to get the job done. It’s infuriating.

him what his resolutions were he said, “Not to make any resolutions.” When I heard his response, I gave a silent cheer. Because when you think about it resolving not to resolve could be considered a resolution in itself. I’m choosing to label it as such and therefore have already met one of my goals for the year. But don’t tell my husband I said so. He doesn’t believe in resolutions.

Take the weight thing. I can work for two years to meet a fitness goal. He skips dinner one night and is down seven pounds the following morning. And he tells me about it. (Of course he does.) I yearn to clean all the junk out of our lives. He yearns to clean the garage on Saturday afternoon. I plan for (and worry about) the future. He lives in the present. Together we make a complete human being. However, I remain resolved – to convince him of the advantages of New Year’s resolutions. It’s been a goal of mine for years. He’s yet to be persuaded. I’m one of those annoying people who enjoys coming up with goals for selfimprovement, personal growth and poundage loss. I type them up and put them in a folder aptly named, “goals.” Each year at this time I take a peek to check my progress over the last twelve months. And then I write new goals, which are often similar to the old goals that I never quite met the year before – or the year before that. I enjoy coming up with goals; I never claimed I had the aptitude for achieving them.

It’s a new year – a time when many of us consider changing more than our calendars. It’s time to get trim around the midsection. Redecorate the bedroom. Read more. Complain less. Join the gym. Clean out the junk drawer. Drink more water and less chardonnay. Take the planking challenge. Learn a new language. Grow our hair out. Get a haircut. Get a promotion. Get a job. Be kinder, less judgmental and less critical of everyone – including ourselves. It’s time to make a resolute resolution to fix, firm and duct tape all the things in our lives that are chipped, chubby or

Lake County Sheriff’s Office dogs Dax, Diesel and Duke recently received donated body armor.
Sheriff’s dogs receive donated body armor Lake County Sheriff’s Office dogs, Dax, Diesel and Duke, have received bullet and stab protective vests thanks to a charitable donation from non-profit organization Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. Each vest will be embroidered with the sentiment “In memory of K9 Rocco Pittsburgh Bureau of Police.” Delivery is expected within eight to 10 weeks. Sheriff Mark Curran stated, “We are grateful to the folks at Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. establishing a non-profit focused on the safety of K9s. The donated vests will keep our K9s safe and save Sheriff’s Office close to $6,000.” Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. is a non-profit charity located in East Taunton, Mass., whose
mission is to provide bullet and stab protective vests and other assistance to dogs of law enforcement and related agencies throughout the United States. The organization was established in 2009 to assist law enforcement agencies with this potentially lifesaving body armor for their fourlegged K9 officers. Since its inception, Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provided over 1,700 protective vests, in 49 states, through private and corporate donations, at a cost of over 1.6 million dollars. All vests are custom made in the USA by Armor Express in Central Lake, Mich. The program is open to dogs actively employed in the U.S. with law enforcement or related agencies who are cer-
tified and at least 20 months of age. New K9 graduates, as well as K9s with expired vests, are eligible to participate. The suggested donation to provide one protective vest for law enforcement K9 is $1,050. Each vest has a value between $1,795 to $2,234 and a five-year warranty, and an average weight of 4-5 lbs. There are an estimated 30,000 law enforcement K9s throughout the United States. For more information or to learn about volunteer opportunities, call (508) 824-6978. Vested Interest in K9s, Inc. provides information, lists events, and accepts tax-deductible donations of any denomination at www.vik9s.org or mailed to P.O. Box 9 East Taunton, MA 02718.

Box 9 East Taunton, MA 02718.

of Crystal Lake, the family participates in a Mass on the first Sunday in October. Originally, a priest from St. John the Baptist parish in Johnsburg celebrated the Mass. But as years went by the parish priests were often too busy on Sundays tending to their congregations. Now the family often turns to retired priests who are willing to come to the chapel for this family event. Because the chapel is small, family members can often be seen outside the building during the yearly Mass, standing in the fields that Maria once plowed. The size of the gathering has become smaller in recent years as family members have moved out of the area. Still there is a good-sized congregation for the event, larger than the chapel’s capacity. According to Schuch, there are at least 40 family members in attendance. On some occasions families have held christenings and first communions in the chapel. The Mass is followed by an outdoor picnic in the field for family members. While it is a family reunion and a time to enjoy the legacy of family, it is also a time to distribute assignments for the care of the chapel for the next year. Jobs such as cleaning the chapel, planting flowers, painting, grass cutting and organizing the following year’s Mass and family gathering are but a few of the needs that are shared by the local descendants of Maria Nett Miller. Building small chapels to thank God for answering prayers was a common practice in Europe and was often done America as the new residents overcame hardships they felt were not possible to survive without the help of God. In the 1800s there were many hardships to overcome.

Twin Lakes man formally charged in beating He was staying at residence with victim’s daughter
By Jason Arndt
STAFF WRITER
A 25-year-old Twin Lakes, Wis., man was formerly charged Friday in Kenosha County Circuit Court with felony aggravated battery, use of a dangerous weapon and domestic abuse in connection with a brutal Christmas morning beating. Alexander Garcia, accused in the attack of 58-year-old Thomas Eppers Sr., was held on $25,000 bond by the
Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office. If convicted, he faces maximum imprisonment of 15 years. According to the criminal complaint, Garcia was allegedly intoxicated when he struck Eppers in the head and torso multiple times with a baseball bat, which rendered Eppers unresponsive when authorities arrived to residence in the 1100 block of Pebble Beach Ct., Twin Lakes.
The complaint contends that Garcia said he did not “remember whether there had been an altercation, and that is what happens when people drink.” Garcia, who was staying at the residence with Eppers’ daughter, Abigail, had a previous altercation with Eppers, the complaint alleges. Twin Lakes Rescue transported Eppers to Aurora Memorial Hospital in Burlington, where Flight for Life helicop-
ter airlifted him to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. Last week, the Kenosha County District Attorney’s Office extended Garcia’s temporary bond, with hopes that Eppers could give a later statement. “He is still at Froedtert, and he is not able to speak to anyone at this time,” said Kenosha County Assistant District Attorney Andrew Burgoyne. “He has been diagnosed with multiple fractures to his face
and requires facial reconstruction surgery.” Although Eppers is able to identify family members, there could be permanent injuries, the complaint stated. “He is currently incapable of providing personal care, and this incapacity is likely to be permanent,” Burgoyne told Court Commissioner David Berman Friday. “He requires 24-hour supervision and on-site skilled nursing care.”
During the hearing, Garcia’s state-appointed public defender Carl Johnson requested a $1,000 signature bond, but it was denied. “My take on this is that there are a lot of gaps in this incident,” Johnson told Berman, noting the case is largely circumstantial. Berman refuted it, citing the injuries were “grave.” Garcia is due for a preliminary hearing Jan. 15 at Kenosha County court.
