Brady Dietrich, 5, of Antioch, second from left, looks to be in midseason form as he lets a slapshot fly with a stick longer than he is tall at the Antioch village ice rink, in the Toft Avenue parking lot on Jan. 23. Surrounding Brady are Mason Lobodzinski, 9, Keith Dietrich, Brady’s father, and goalie, Ron Lobodzinski, Mason’s father. The Parks and Recreation Department officially opened the skating facility on Jan 21, later-than-usual due to mild temperatures the first month of winter. The facility is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Hockey hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. For more information, contact the Parks and Recreation Department at (847) 395-2160.
A 66-year-old Antioch man died Jan. 18 when he was struck by a car while walking across Highway 173. Daniel R. Rieck, of the 400 block of Orchard Street, Antioch, was attempting to cross the highway near Walmart when he was struck, according to police. The Antioch Police Department responded to 474 East Highway 173 about 5:15 p.m. for a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash, according to a release from the department. The release said the driver of a Ford sedan was traveling east on the highway when it struck Rieck. Preliminary investigation revealed Rieck was crossing Highway 173 from the north to the south near the entrance to Walmart when he was struck. The driver of the Ford told police Rieck was standing in the marked median, holding something in his hands. The driver said Rieck suddenly appeared in front of the car after it switched from the median traffic lane to the curb lane. Rieck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital and was released after treatment. An investigation of the crash is being conducted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Antioch Police Department.
