Surrounding Brady are Mason Lobodzinski, 9, Keith Dietrich, Brady’s father, and goalie, Ron Lobodzinski, Mason’s father. The Parks and Recreation Department officially opened the skating facility on Jan 21, later-than-usual due to mild temperatures the first month of winter. The facility is open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. daily. Hockey hours are 8 a.m. to 10 a.m. and 8 p.m. to 10 p.m. daily. A 66-year-old Antioch man died Jan. 18 when he was struck by a car while walking across Highway 173. Daniel R. Rieck, of the 400 block of Orchard Street, Antioch, was attempting to cross the highway near Walmart when he was struck, according to police. The Antioch Police Department responded to 474 East Highway 173 about 5:15 p.m. for a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash, according to a release from the department. The release said the driver of a Ford sedan was traveling east on the highway when it struck Rieck. Preliminary investigation revealed Rieck was crossing Highway 173 from the north to the south near the entrance to Walmart when he was struck. The driver of the Ford told police Rieck was standing in the marked median, holding something in his hands. The driver said Rieck suddenly appeared in front of the car after it switched from the median traffic lane to the curb lane. Rieck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital and was released after treatment. An investigation of the crash is being conducted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Antioch Police Department.

A 77-year-old Antioch woman died after apparently losing control of her car and colliding with another in Ingleside Jan. 20. Jaclynn E. Vos, of the 39800 block of North Long Drive, Antioch, was pronounced dead at the scene. She was not wearing a seatbelt, according to Lake County sheriff’s deputies who responded to the crash about 8:49 a.m. According to the Sheriff’s Office, deputies were dispatched to Highway 59 just east of Wilson Road, Ingleside, for a traffic crash with injuries. Deputies found two vehicles with significant damage. Preliminary investigation shows a 1998 Subaru Outback driven by Vos was traveling westbound on Highway 59. It appears the driver of the Subaru lost control and swerved into eastbound lanes of traffic, according to the Sheriff’s Office. Vos’ car struck a 2013 Chevrolet Sonic, which was traveling east on Highway 59. The driver of the Chevrolet was transported to Centegra Northern Illinois Medical Center, McHenry, with non-life threatening injuries. The crash remained under investigation by the Lake County Sheriff’s Office Technical Crash Investigations Unit last week.

A 17-year-old from Richmond was left in critical condition Jan. 19 after the car she was driving struck a tree and ended up on its roof in unincorporated Richmond Township. According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation indicates that around 9:05 p.m., a 2007 Toyota Matrix driven by the girl was northbound in the 7400 block of Pioneer Road, south of West Solon Road, when the driver lost control. The vehicle left the east side of the roadway, colliding with a tree, then overturning onto its roof. The driver was treated by Richmond Fire Protection District, then flown by Flight for Life helicopter to Advocate Condell Medical Center in Libertyville, where the she was listed in critical condition the day following the crash. The driver was the sole occupant of the vehicle and was wearing a seatbelt. The front driver’s airbag deployed in the crash. The Sheriff’s Office said drugs and alcohol were not a contributing factor and the pavement was clear of ice and snow. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of the McHenry County Conservation District Police assisted with traffic control.

Tax scams are tops in area, according to BBB The IRS has begun accepting tax returns for 2015, both filed electronically and those filing paper returns. The Better Business Bureau warns tax scams are as inevitable as taxes themselves. After reviewing both inquiries and complaints received in 2015, the BBB of Chicago and Northern Illinois concluded that the IRS telephone tax scam was the No. 1 scam

in the area. The most recent federal figures are from 2014 and they show, according to the Federal Trade Commission, more than 55,000 people filed IRS scam complaints. That number is dwarfed by the figures from the U.S. Treasury where in the past two years more than 400,000 complaints were received. In addition, the Treasury Inspector General for Tax Adminis-

tration says 10,000 new scam calls are made every week. “From January to December last year we saw a steady stream of calls about the IRS scam, and there is absolutely no reason to think that won’t continue,” says Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “Unfortunately, across our service area alone, we

expect there will be thousands of consumers who will become victims of this scam.” Bernas points out, “Our concern is that consumers are prepared to act, if or when they get a call or an email, and especially what to do if they fall victim.’ The IRS predicts this year there will be 150 million individual returns filed. For scammers that

number represents a fertile hunting ground. However, it is not difficult for consumers to protect themselves: • For calls - Hang up. The IRS does not contact taxpayers by phone to demand payment, And would never ask that it be sent via wire transfer or prepaid debit card. • For emails - Delete it. Like calls

Four acclaimed international films from 2014 will be presented for free on Friday nights by the College of Lake County Center for International Education. The spring semester films are: “Force Majeure” on Feb. 5; “Calvary” on March 11; “Timbuktu” on April 1 and “Clouds of Sils Maria” on May 6. Films begin at 7 p.m. in Room A162 (Anderson Lecture Hall) on the CLC Grayslake Campus, 19351 W. Washington St. They have subtitles when necessary, include adult content and are not suitable for children. Here’s a close look at the featured films: • Feb. 5: “Force Majeure” (Sweden, 2014). A privileged Swedish family enjoys a fantasy ski vacation in the Alps, only to see the father’s self-confidence shattered with the speed and force of an avalanche. Subsequent attempts to heal wounded pride and restore trust soon reveal the fragile, illusory nature of the relationships we rely on most. A darkly funny experience, the film moves seamlessly from cringe-worthy comedy to anguished marital melodrama and incisive satire of bourgeois middle age. • March 11: “Calvary” (Ireland, 2014). Father Lavelle, a small-town Irish priest, receives a striking confession: a man who was sexually abused at the hands of clergy plans to kill the innocent Lavelle as a form of cosmic retaliation. Dry verbal wit and the highest of spiritual stakes coexist throughout director/playwright John Michael McDonagh’s fiery script, enhanced immeasurably by haunting coastal cinematography and the authoritative Brendan Gleeson as the weary believer. • April 1: “Timbuktu” (Mauritania, 2014): The premise of this Oscar nominee – a rural village in Mali is forced to adapt when militants begin

imposing sharia law – belies its gentle, humane tone. Defying bans on cigarettes, music and football, the town’s residents display a quiet, even playful dignity in the face of fundamentalism. When a conflict turns violent, however, a legal nightmare exposes the tragic dimensions underlying the new regime. • May 6: “Clouds of Sils Maria” (France, 2014). Maria, an internationally acclaimed actress navigating middle age, is invited to revisit the play that made her a star in her youth – only now she’ll be playing the

lead character’s mother, facing off against a new rising talent. A warm, witty tribute to female friendships, the craft of acting and the impact of Hollywood on European Cinema, Clouds of Sils Maria features assured, multi-layered performances from Juliette Binoche as Maria and Kristen Stewart as her personal assistant. For more information, contact Chris Cooling, CLC film instructor, at (847) 543-2623 or ccooling@clcillinois.edu. Or visit the series’ Facebook page at www.facebook.com/CLCInternationalFilmSeries.

PM&L to stage ‘Uncommon Women and Others’ Wendy Wasserstein’s first play, “Uncommon Women and Others,” will open at PM&L Theatre, Antioch, on Friday and will run Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays for three weeks. “Uncommon Women and Others” is a dramatic comedy telling the story of alumnae from Mount Holyoke College meeting for lunch in 1978 to talk about their experiences – some raunchy, others sobering. Regina Reynolds (previous PM&L directing credits include “Censored on Final Approach” and “Once Upon a Mattress”) directs. Other memorable works by noted 20th century playwright Wasserstein include “The Heidi Chronicles” and “The Sisters Rosensweig.” Because of adult content and language, the show is recommended for audiences aged 16 and older.

“Uncommon Women and Others” will run Fridays, Jan. 29, and Feb. 5 and 12 at 8 p.m.; Saturdays, Jan. 30, and Feb. 6 and 13 at 8 p.m.; and Sundays, Jan. 31, and Feb. 7 and 14, at 2:30 pm. Tickets are available online at www.pmltheatre. com and are $15 for adults and $13 for seniors and students. To reserve tickets directly through the box office, call (847) 395-3055. The box office is open Monday through Thursday, from 6 to 8 p.m.; Saturday, 9 a.m. to 12 p.m.; and one and a half hours before curtain on show dates. The box office will open on Jan. 18. PM&L Theatre is at 877 N. Main Street, Antioch. PM&L is a nonprofit, community-based volunteer organization. Visit www.pmltheatre.com for show announcements, news, and more.

Local residents warned against ComEd scam ComEd is warning Fox Lake customers to be on the alert for scam artists claiming to be a ComEd representative seeking payment. Over the last few weeks, the company has seen a rapid increase in reports from small businesses and some residential customers who have been contacted by scam artists. From November to December 2015, ComEd saw a 260 percent jump in the number of reported scams. When compared to December 2014, the number of reported impersonations increased more than eight times the previous year’s figure. Scammers are contacting customers by phone and

in-person claiming to be ComEd representatives and telling them their service will be disconnected unless payment is made. They instruct the individual to wire funds or buy a prepaid credit card and call them back with the personal identification number. Variations of the scam include stories that the customer’s billing cycle has changed and payment is needed immediately, or that the account is past due and immediate payment is required to avoid disconnection of service, or that the customer’s previous payments were not accepted or processed. “ComEd wants to protect its customers from these types

of deceptive schemes. It’s not current practice for ComEd to ask a customer to purchase a prepaid credit card or to make a payment on a bill,” said Fidel Marquez, senior vice president of Governmental and External Affairs, ComEd. “If customers are ever unsure about the status of their accounts, they should always contact ComEd for verification.” ComEd is committed to keeping our customers informed and provides scam alert information via a variety of communications channels including website, social media outlets, press notifications and direct marketing materials. As a result of the height-

ened scam reports, the company will look at increasing its communication efforts and continue working with the Illinois Commerce Commission (ICC) to advise customers on the appropriate way to prevent scam situations. The ICC is advising customers that in most cases utilities are required to provide advance notice prior to disconnection of service and when in doubt customers should call the utility or visit its website to verify their account status and the utility’s authorized payment methods. People who believe they have been a target of a phone

scam are urged to contact the Illinois Attorney General’s office toll free at 1-800-3865438 (TTY 1-800-964-3013) or visit the Illinois Attorney General’s web site at www.illinoisattorneygeneral.gov and click on the link “Protecting Consumers.” ComEd reminds its customers that scammers may call or come to your home. Representatives from ComEd always carry proper identification and never ask customers for cash or personal financial information. Customers can avoid being scammed by taking a few precautions: • Never provide your social

security or personal information to anyone initiating contact with you claiming to be a ComEd representative or requesting you to send money to another person or entity other than ComEd. • When in doubt, check it out. Be skeptical of individuals wearing clothing with old or defaced company logos. If you have any doubts, ask to see a company photo ID. • Never make payment for services to anyone coming to your door. If customers ever have concerns about the status of their account, they can contact ComEd at 1-800-EDISON1.

Pedestrian dies after he’s struck by car A 66-year-old Antioch man died Jan. 18 when he was struck by a car while walking across Highway 173. Daniel R. Rieck, of the 400 block of Orchard Street, Antioch, was attempting to cross the highway near Walmart when he was struck, according to police. The Antioch Police Department responded to 474 East Highway 173 about 5:15 p.m. for a vehicle vs. pedestrian crash, according to a release

from the department. The

driver said Rieck suddenly appeared in front of the car after it switched from the median traffic lane to the curb lane. Rieck was pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Ford was transported to a local hospital and was released after treatment. An investigation of the crash is being conducted by the Lake County Major Crash Assistance Team and the Antioch Police Department.

Woodstock teen killed in Phoenix

The McHenry County Department of Health is sponsoring a cardiovascular screening in recognition of American Heart Month. The screening will take place from 9 to 11 a.m. Wednesday, Feb. 10, at the Woodstock Public Library, 414 West Judd Street. A Woodstock teen reported missing from earlier this month was the victim of a murder-suicide in Arizona, according to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Department. Authorities said Faith Kies, 16, died from a gunshot wound apparently fired by Alex O’Neill, 25, also of Woodstock. According to reports, O’Neill shot Lies and then fatally shot himself as police closed in on them in Phoenix. On Jan. 14 the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office took a missing juvenile report from a residence in unincorporated Woodstock. The parents Kies reported that their daughter left the residence sometime during the overnight hours of Jan. 13, into Jan. 14. Through the course of the investigation, members of the Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division were led to believe that the juvenile was heading west to an address in Phoenix, Ariz., with O’Neill. The National Center for Missing and Exploited Children was contacted to assist with disseminating information. Detectives contacted law enforcement agencies between Illinois and Arizona, including the Phoenix Police Department. Detectives also requested a check to be conducted at a residence Phoenix. Phoenix Police advised that they had initially gone to the residence at 7 p.m. Jan. 15 to search for O’Neill’s vehicle, which was not there. Officers returned at around 9:15 p.m. and located the vehicle. While police were talking to the suspect’s parents, two shots were heard from inside the home. Officers entered and found Kies with a critical gunshot wound and O’Neill with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Kies, who had been shot in the head, was transported to a hospital, where she later died. O’Neill was declared dead at the scene. He was a family friend of the missing juvenile, according to authorities.

terol. Only one out of every three adults with high cholesterol has the condition under control. Having high cholesterol puts people at risk for cardiovascular disease (includes heart disease, stroke, and high blood pressure), which is the number one killer in the United States. Certain lifestyles such as being a smoker, being overweight and lack of exercise

can also put people at a higher risk for developing heart disease. If you have high cholesterol, there are no signs or symptoms but it is treatable. Getting your cholesterol checked once every five years keeps you knowledgeable about any changes in your levels. It is important to discuss your cholesterol levels with your doctor in order to develop the best plan for your health.

Residents urged to monitor radon The McHenry County Department of Health encourages residents to test their homes for radon. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has designated January as national Radon Action Month. Radon is the leading cause of lung cancer deaths among nonsmokers in the United States as reported by the EPA. Radon is a colorless, odorless, tasteless gas that results from the breakdown of uranium in

soil, rock and water. Radon test kits are inexpensive and can be purchased at the McHenry County Department of Health for $6. Test kits can also be found at most hardware stores and online. Exposure to radon is a preventable health risk. If high radon levels are detected steps can be taken to help reduce unnecessary exposure. Questions regarding radon should be directed to the Division of Environmental Health.

Staff is available to provide education on a variety of topics to individuals, community groups or organizations and students of all ages. Contact the Division of Environmental Health at (815) 334-4585 Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. For after-hours and weekend emergencies, call (815) 344-7421. Visit www.mcdh. info, www.illinois.gov/iema and www.epa.gov for additional information on radon.

PM&L is a non-profit, community-based volunteer organization. Visit www. pmltheatre.com for show announcements, news, and more.

the IRS will not send an email. All contact is via U.S. Post Office. Bernas also notes, “Consumer should also understand the IRS doesn’t threaten people with arrest, revocation of their driver’s license or deportation. And, it doesn’t request payment of an outstanding bill without offering taxpayers the opportunity to appeal the bill.” Tax-related identity theft is a major concern for both the IRS and the Illinois Department of Revenue. Tax I.D. Theft occurs when someone uses your stolen Social Security number to file a tax return claiming a fraudulent refund. Victims of tax ID theft should follow these steps: • If you receive a letter from the IRS saying two (or more) returns have been filed in your name or that your identity has been stolen, call the number in the letter immediately. • Contact one of the three major credit bureaus to place a ‘fraud alert’ on your credit record.
