Antioch Community High School’s booster club, Sequoit Pride, is organizing its largest fundraiser of the year. “The Main Event” is a dinner-auction-concert that raises money to pay for unbudgeted activities for ACHS students. They popular event typically sells out. This year’s Main Event has a luau theme and will take place at the recently renovated VFW Hall on North Avenue in Antioch on Saturday, March 12. There are a limited number of tickets available. Tickets can be purchased online on a firstcome, first-served basis. Dinner tickets are $30 before Feb. 27 ($40 after) and include access to the live auction and concert entertainment. Auction-only tickets are also available ($15 in advance, $20 at the door). Dinner will feature a BBQ buffet. The menu includes pork roast, chicken kabobs, mostaccioli, rice pilaf, mixed vegetables, salad, rolls and assorted desserts. A full bar will be open as well. Attendees will have a chance to hear live music performed by the ACHS Jazz Band at the beginning of the evening plus a concert by No Question following the live auction.
A silent auction will begin when the doors open with rolling close times throughout the evening. A live auction takes place following the dinner. Past dinner/auctions have raised thousands of dollars to support programs and co‑curricular opportunities for ACHS students. Past auctions have featured items from hundreds of donors including Billy Joel concert tickets, a Door County vacation, autographed jerseys from the Bulls, Bears and Packers, reserved student parking at ACHS, a Harley-Davidson rental, spa weekends, tools, cooking school, furniture, gift certificates and much more. Visit www.sequoitpride. com/themainevent to see photos of some of the items that were part of past Main Event auctions. Here is the tentative schedule for the event: 5:30 p.m. – doors open, silent auctions begin; 5:30 to 6 p.m. – ACHS Jazz Band performs; 6 to 7 p.m. – drinks, conversation, silent auction items; 7 to 8 p.m. – dinner 8 p.m. – live auction, followed by a concert with No Question

A 24-year-old Fox Lake man received a $400,000 bond in Lake County Circuit Court Thursday on 16 felony charges, including seven counts of child pornography, after a two-week sting conducted by Lake County authorities. Joshua Hoffman is also accused of possessing marijuana, possessing marijuana exceeding 1,000 grams with intent to distribute, and having a loaded semi-automatic handgun without a state-issued Firearm Owners Identification Card. Additionally, Hoffman is charged with criminal fortification after authorities could not enter through the door during the search warrant, and four other drug-related felonies. Along with Hoffman, Lake County court officials charged 19-year-old Mariah Carlos with two felony counts – possession of marijuana, and possession of marijuana exceeding 1,000 grams with intent to
deliver. Carlos was released on $10,000 bond after Thursday’s court hearing. According to Det. Chris Covelli of the Lake County Sheriff’s Office, the county’s cybercrimes unit launched the investigation. “It was through an undercover online investigation, which proceeded into the search warrant,” Covelli said, noting one of the two defendants was the intended target of the investigation, but did not say whom. Authorities had difficulty entering the home in the 100 block of Riverview Avenue during the search warrant, citing a fortified door, but eventually got in. Covelli said Hoffman and Carlos did not resist arrest. “He and she were compliant once we made entry in the home,” Covelli said. As part of the investigation, authorities collected hundreds of videos containing alleged child pornography, in-

Officials note hike in people with flu-like symptoms

Although the prevalence of people in McHenry County testing positive for flu in 2016 is below last year’s level, there has been a slight increase in those visiting local emergency departments with influenza-like illness over the past week, according to the McHenry County Department of Health. Throughout Illinois, there have been reports of localized influenza activity, including some deaths. Health officials are advising people that it’s not too late to get the flu vaccine. According to MCDH Administrator Mike Hill, “Flu vaccine is readily available at physician offices, clinics, retail pharmacies and many grocery stores throughout the County. People can also call the Health Department at (815) 3344510 and request a flu shot.” Flu can make anyone, including the healthiest, seriously ill. Symptoms include fever, cough, sore throat, runny/ stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, according to department officials, who advise people to consult a physician if they think you have the flu. Even those who don’t develop symptoms can pass the virus to others like pregnant women, young children, those with compromised immune systems (from conditions like asthma, diabetes, heart disease) and people 65 and older. If those who have not gotten the flu shot, the best protection is to practice the 3 Cs – clean your hands, cover your cough and contain your germs by staying home when sick, health officials said. Flu season normally peaks between December and February, but cases often occur through May, according to the Centers for Disease Control. For more flu information, visit www.mcdh.info.

It didn’t take police in Burlington, Wis., long to find some measure of justice for the community’s beloved statue of Abraham Lincoln. Jacob Hinds, 22, of Burlington, was arrested and charged after allegedly using a tow strap and his pickup truck to pull the Lincoln statue – which belongs to the City of Burlington and has been in place for more than 100 years – from its pedestal at about 6 a.m. Jan. 30. Hinds was charged with felony criminal damage to property last week. He was in jail on a $5,000 bond. For a good part of Jan. 30, the statue lay sideways in the snow next to its pedestal across from the Burlington Area School District offices, the former Lincoln School. It was later removed to the city’s Department of Public Works. Mayor Bob Miller said in the criminal complaint filed against Hinds that repairs to the statue will likely cost more than $2,500 due to having to hire a specialist to fix the damage, as well as locate a crane to put the statue back in place. At the Feb. 2 City Council meeting, Miller said the statue was being sent for repairs, and that he had received numerous calls from people wanting to donate to help restore the statue. When asked if there could be some sort of cer-
emony when he was placed back on his pedestal, Director of Public Works Jim Bergles said that could happen this month. According to the police, they received a report of a possibly disabled vehicle at the intersection of North Kane Street at about 6 a.m. Saturday morning – a twotoned dark and cream-colored truck with two males in their 20s nearby. Police spoke with a man who had called police, and he said the vehicle had pulled up on the ground the statue is located on. The man told police he stopped to ask if the driver of the vehicle was OK, and the driver answered yes. But when the man left, he looked back and “it appeared the truck did not pull away in a normal manner,” the com-

Charities targeted in latest scam Charities are designed to serve others, and now some scammers have decided they are the ones who want to be served. These scamming thieves have set their sights on not-for-profit organizations in the hopes of taking advantage of these groups in much the same way as scams steal from consumers. The Better Business Bureau serving Chicago and Northern Illinois has received reports
from several areas about charities receiving emails from “Ken McFarlane” or “Kenneth McFarlane” with offers of a five-figure donation. Some charities received and deposited $39,850 in checks. “McFarlane” a short time later reaches out to the charities claiming that a mistake had been made. Only $29,850 was the intended donation, and he asks that $10,000 be sent back. The initial checks turned out to be fraudulent.
organiza “Not-for-profit tions need to be on the lookout for checks in large amounts followed by emails asking for refunds,” said Steve J. Bernas, president and CEO of the Better Business serving Chicago and Northern Illinois. “The format of this scam is not new, but unfortunately the target of the scam is new.” Bernas explains that the more commonly seen process is where a scammer places a
large order with a business, claims there was a mistake and that the order was too big and asks for some money to be returned. The business believes the order is real. It sends back the requested portion of the “mistaken” order and processes the remainder only to find out a couple days later that the initial check was fraudulent. “This scam hits organizations twice,” explains Bernas. “First, they lose the money they
return, then second they find out the lesser amount they believed they had does not exist when the check bounces. These scammers are heartless enough to make the charity think they still have a large donation, even when asked to return some of the money. And this is what may convince an organization the donation is real.” Charities should be wary of any request for money back, especially given the time it
takes to detect whether a check is fraudulent, notes Bernas. If an organization believes it has been targeted, Bernas recommends contacting the Illinois Attorney General, and going to the BBB Scamtracker webpage at www.bbb.org/scamtracker/ chicago to report the scam. “Large donation checks to charities are tempting, and many charities want to believe these are real,” Bernas explains.

Rescue Squad donates remaining funds to community After more than 75 years of service to the Antioch community, the Antioch Rescue Squad has formally dissolved and donated its remaining funds to various entities in the Antioch community. After the payment of any taxes and the costs of dissolution, the squad and its related non-profit foundation have made a donation totaling $245,746 to the Village of Antioch and the First Fire Protection District. The donation will be used to provide emergency medical services within the area served by the Antioch Fire Depart-
community and materially aid the timely, professional delivery of services to those in need. The Antioch Rescue Squad also donated additional funds totaling $245,746 in varying proportions to the Antioch Open Arms Mission, the PM&L Theater, the Antioch Historical Society and the Antioch Area Healthcare Accessibility Alliance. In winding down the squad’s business, squad leaders said it was important to them to continue the generous spirit of volunteer group that has served for 75 years.
ment. The Village Board and the board of the First Fire District are expected to announce plans for the use of the donation in the future. Among the potential uses for the funds include putting new ambulances and power-assisted cots into service. Emergency medical services are among the most costly public services. Providing adequate funding for ambulances, cots and related equipment is an obligation that strains budgets in virtually all municipalities and fire districts throughout Illinois. This donation will help meet the critical medical needs of the

Sheriff’s Office offers $500 scholarship
Historical Society set to kick off 30th annual lecture series
The McHenry County Historical Society and Museum’s 30th Annual Sampler Lecture Series, beginning March 7, spans a myriad of topics – from beer to boxcars, waterways to where you can find some of the best fish fries across the Wisconsin border. Here’s a look at the series: • 7 p.m., Monday, March 7 – My Kind of Booze Town. Presented by Liz Garibay. Chicago is a city built on alcohol. From foundation to fires and fairs, beer and booze have played pivotal roles in the development of our town. Beer and tavern historian, Liz Garibay, will discuss how alcohol helped shape Chicago. She is the founder of History on Tap, a project that connects drinking history to global history. While heading up the education department at the Chicago History Museum, she created and led History Pub Crawls, the most successful public program to date. She is the only American
to ever have been invited to join the prestigious and boozy organization known as the Pub History Society of the United Kingdom. • 3 p.m. Monday, March 21 – The River as Time Machine. Presented by Fox River laureate and ecologist Brian Ellis of Bishop Hill. Travel through geological history to witness the origins of Illinois’ great rivers. Paddle along with Père Marquette and the French explorers as they contact Native Americans, and meet keelboat captain Mike Fink and steamboat captain Henry Detweiller. This musical ramble through history will explore how humans have shaped the rivers, how the rivers have changed through time, and the importance of rivers in the layers of human history. • 3 p.m. Monday, April 18 – The History of Mexican Railroad Boxcar Communities in the Chicago Area and the Midwest. Presented by Antonio Delgado. Between 1910 and 1950s
in the United States, particularly the Midwest, railroads employed a large number of Mexican immigrants to lay track. These immigrant railroad workers and their families literally lived on railroad property, in railroad boxcars and “section houses,” year-round. The program not only underscores the important contributions these laborers made to the area–with the use of photos, maps, political cartoon and other period images. friendly, loyal customers who have been dining at their favorite places for so many years. Wisconsin’s original supper clubs may have begun in the 1920s as gangster hangouts, but following the repeal of Prohibition these same roadhouse restaurants– located outside city limits–were the first to receive liquor licenses. In “Wisconsin Supper Clubs–Another Round,” slated for release in June, Faiola highlights 50 more of the finest establishments, including Fitzgerald’s in Genoa City and the Colony House Restaurant in Trevor. All programs are at the Society museum, 6422 Main St. in Union. Series tickets are $35, $30 for Society members. A $10 donation is requested for individual programs. Spotlight shines on ‘Westosha’ area
Romance on the trail
People can watch ‘Around the Corner’ episode online
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
Hundreds of people, including elected officials, attended the advance screening of “Westosha-Western Kenosha County” Feb. 1 at the Wilmot (Wis.) Union High School auditorium. The episode, which is part of Milwaukee Public Television’s “Around the Corner with John McGivern,” highlights several facets of the sprawling western Kenosha County area. McGivern is an Emmy-award winning host who played the role of Bruce Macintosh in the 2001 film “The Princess Diaries.” McGivern selected the area, citing his connection with Paddock Lake resident Mary MacDonald Kerr, an actress who has performed in Milwaukee and Chicago for several years. “She had a house on Paddock Lake and I was excited to have her on the show,” McGivern said. Both actors starred alongside each other in Waterwalk, produced in 2012, which portrayed a true story involving a family in the Midwest. The show’s host and crew of three other people, including producer Lois Maurer, explored all communities after receiving feedback from area Chambers of Commerce, local neighborhood associations and business associations. Additionally, Maurer exchanged ideas with Kenosha County Sheriff David Beth and County Executive Jim Kreuser. “When you head west of the Interstate, you can feel your blood pressure drop, and simply say it’s beautiful here,” said Maurer, about her conversation with Beth. When McGivern, Maurer, a crewmember hit the ground in July, they engaged in conversations with members of each community, but a few items stood out in McGivern’s mind. “The (Wilmot) Speedway was great and I talked to the racers, I had no idea that it was there,” McGivern said. “Bristol Renaissance Fair was a trip, when we had to leave, I didn’t really want to.” Maurer, a Milwaukee native, said the show
Bong will host hike for Valentines By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
The Richard Bong State Recreation Area in Brighton, Wis., will host its annual Romantic Hike Feb. 13. According to Naturalist Beth Goeppinger, the event has been held for at least 10 years and is reserved for adults only. “It is a very relaxing event and walking the trails is optional,” she said. Featured at the event held 7-9 p.m. are two live bands and a variety of desserts spread out along two tables. Hot cocoa is the beverage of the evening. Goeppinger said both music groups, Brodere Recorder Group and Silverland Flute Trio, are expected to play soothing romantic music at the Visitor Center. Additionally, guests can walk the 0.7-mile recreation trail, which is optional, and huddle together for a bonfire. Goeppinger said interested people must register for the event, with a $6 paid admission and vehicle admission sticker. A day pass is $8 and a yearround vehicle admission sticker is $28, but Goeppinger noted the year-round sticker allows guests to access all of Wisconsin’s state parks. To register, call (262) 878-5601.
offers the audience a different perspective on Kenosha County, where visitors typically veer east of Interstate 94. She rarely turned west when travelling through the area. “I had no idea that western Kenosha County had so much here – it is so pretty. It is kind of like country,” Maurer said. “There are beautiful farm fields and we met a lot of friendly people.” After Monday’s screening, every Public Broadcast System station in Wisconsin viewed the show Thursday, followed by showings in Minnesota and Chicago. The regional and national attention offers western Kenosha County an opportunity to showcase the community, according to Dennis DuChene, President of the Kenosha Area Convention and Visitors Bureau. “It is always great to promote the Kenosha area, not only regionally, but nationally,” DuChene said. The collaboration between visitors bureau and McGivern is not the first, however, with the show’s host chronicling eastern Kenosha County in an earlier screening. The visitors bureau assisted MPTV and McGivern’s crew in coordinating locations throughout the taping of the segment in July. Kreuser is pleased the show opted for western Kenosha County. “This is absolutely wonderful that Westosha was selected for this, we have an opportunity to showcase a great corner of Kenosha and Southeastern Wisconsin,” Kreuser said. The show could attract one newcomer to the community, Sue Higgins of Mount Pleasant, an avid fan of McGivern’s show. She has often planned her summer vacations around McGivern’s travels. “I catch all of his shows and watched his theater, so I wanted to show up and see what this community is all about,” Higgins said. “I am looking for hidden gems and come back to experience them.” Those interested in watching the show can access it online any time at www.mptv.org.

Health problems create financial mess The Time Is Now to Help has been blessed with a new matching grant opportunity. Generous and compassionate donors have come forward to provide the Family Foundation $30,000 matching grant to begin immediately. Please help us show our overwhelming appreciation for their charitable giving. The good works we will do together with these matching grant funds will help many of our poverty stricken neighbors in the weeks to come. Dear W.C., My grandmother and I are in desperate need of your help. We both have medical problems and are struggling to make ends meet. I am writing to see if you can help us with our rent and utilities this month. We have had several unexpected expenses from an emergency room visit for myself, and our car is on its last leg. We have had to put our rent money into keeping the car running so I can take both of us to our doctor’s appointments and my grandma to therapy. She

full of desperation each week in our mailbox. We also are flooded with phone calls and emails requesting emergency assistance. Each week we also receive letters requesting information about our charity, phone calls and emails from potential volunteers and generous people who want to donate furniture or clothing. I apologize we are not able to answer each and every letter, email or phone call because we are very busy taking care of people suffering in the pains of poverty. Our focus has to be on providing the desperately needed poverty assistance to those who are in greatest need. At this time we have a waiting list for volunteer opportunities. We are so grateful for our volunteers who give of their time and energy. Most have been with us for many years. We also do not have the time to answer every letter or phone call asking questions about our charity. We could spend eight hours a day on that task alone. had a stroke three months ago, and it has been a long recovery. I moved in with her to care for her after her stroke and to keep her from being all alone. This arrangement has worked out well for both of us. I had to give up my job due to my grandma needing much more care than I thought. I could not leave her alone while I went to work. I am a Type 1 diabetic, which means I have been diabetic since I was a child. My grandmother raised me when both my parents died at a young age. I feel it is my turn to take care of her. We have no one else left in our family. It is just the two of us. Could you please help us catch up on our rent and utilities? Dear readers, There are so many letters
be answered by visiting our website, Facebook page or by just reading this column. We believe our mission statement explains everything you need to know about our charity, “The Time Is Now exists solely for the purpose of alleviating the suffering of those who find themselves facing economic hardship. The Time Is Now’s continuing goal is to make sure every cent donated is utilized to provide goods and services such as food, clothing, utilities, toiletries, automobile assistance and shelter assistance to help the extremely povertystricken children, senior citizens, disabled, veterans and families live more comfortably, improve their quality of life, and remove their pain and suffering.” That is where every penny of your donation is being used. That is how we spend every minute of our day to help those in need. We are extremely grateful that we have you, our wonderful donors, and our generous matching grant providers beside us on this mission to
remove the pains of poverty. This granddaughter and grandmother are just one of the many letters we have received requesting our special kind of assistance. Each letter is read and recipient is researched before we call or arrive at their doorstep. These women were found to be truly in need of our help. I put their letter in the top of the pile for home visits that either I or volunteers would visit that day. I arrived at the door of the grandmother’s apartment. The door was quickly answered by who I assumed was the granddaughter. After I provided my identification, she invited me inside. She led me in the apartment and introduced me to her grandmother seated on the sofa. She sat with a walker in front of her, and I could see there was some paralysis in her face. She tried to reach out for my hand so I stepped forward to take it. I sat down next to her on the sofa as I could see she was struggling to look up. She slowly said, “Thank you
for coming to visit. It has been so long since I had a visitor.” The granddaughter loudly repeated who I was, explaining her grandmother had some hearing loss. I could see the grandmother was happy I was there. The granddaughter asked if I would mind talking in the kitchen as her grandmother might be upset if she knew they were having financial problems. She kindly asked the grandmother if she needed anything and then put the television on for her. Once the grandmother was watching TV comfortably, we went to the kitchen to talk. The granddaughter gave me a quick review of their situation, explaining their financial dilemma and their health difficulties. She told me about her worsening health problems due to her diabetes, even though she had an insulin pump and followed a strict diet plan. We talked about her grandmother’s stroke and her slow recovery. The grandmother had Type 2 diabetes, which added to her

Genevive Klimala shows off her backyard chickens at her home on Browns Lake in the Town of Burlington.

rule the roost More people raising egg-layers in urban settings nowing what By Jason Arndt you eat and costSTAFF WRITER effectiveness. Those are the primary motivators to raise backyard chickens for Genevive Klimala and Brian Schaefer of the Town of Burlington, Wis. “While we can’t afford to raise cattle and hogs, and things of that nature, we can raise chickens to get eggs from,” Klimala explained. According to the University of WisconsinExtension, more people are becoming interested in raising poultry in urban areas. Klimala and Schaefer have raised chickens for the last five years. Initially, they started because Klimala wanted to know what she was eating. “The initial reason was because of when you learn about how your food is produced and how it is raised, you learn that there is a lot of cruelty and inhumane methods that are used to raise our livestock,” Klimala said. It does not take a rooster to raise chickens solely for laying eggs, according to the UWExtension. Klimala – formerly of Chicago – said she
first came up with the idea when approached by another resident in the Town of Burlington who wanted to sell a flock of birds. Total cost of the first flock, at seven months old, was about $25. While Klimala was eager to pursue it, Schaefer was skeptical about cost saving measures, but went along with the idea. “I was not in favor of the chickens. I figured I could finally get her to give up on the idea,” said Schaefer, who took meticulous notes. “I kept detailed records of what everything cost, how many eggs we got and kept it all on a spreadsheet,” he said. “I was surprised the data showed that they paid for themselves.” Each chicken lays an average of 300 eggs per year, and through the personal experiences of Klimala and Schaefer, it is more than enough to help other families and friends. The flock of six birds produces about 36 eggs per week, with some getting disbursed to members of Schaefer’s family. “Our flock is more than enough to do Sunday breakfasts and daily stuff and then share with his parents and his brother,” Klimala said. “You got five people that are consistently receiving cruelty-free eggs.” However, raising chickens comes with
responsibility. By the third year, chickens stop producing eggs. Chicken owners then need a humane plan to use the animals, and then deal with the arrival of a new flock – what Klimala calls “an end plan.” It is illegal to dump chickens, but she has heard stories of the animals dropped anywhere from the local animal shelter to the side of the road to farm property. For Klimala and Schaefer, the two cull the chickens and use them for food consumption – which is what they did with the first flock. Schaefer ordered a batch of 26 that included 20 broiler hens from a hatchery in Waterloo, Wis., at $2 per hen. The difference between layer and broiler is the total weight, with layer hens topping out at four pounds, while broiler hens can go up to eight. Schaefer cited postal service requirements, which note hatcheries require bulk shipments, and the birds need to stay warm in transit. “Because they ship through the post office, we need a minimum order. They have to stay warm so we bought 20 broiler chicks, so they can ship them,” Schaefer said, noting an order less than six requires in person pick-up.
HOW THEY STARTED AND PROPER CARE
When the two began, Schaefer constructed an eight-by-eight foot pen with recycled plywood and chicken wire, with costs estimated at less than $100. Both acknowledged it has been relatively simple to raise the chickens properly and humanely. “I take care of the chickens, they are very easy to take care of,” Schaefer said. “You take them home, put them in larger boxes, with warming lamps, change the bedding out every two days, they pretty much raise themselves,” Klimala said. Additionally, Schaefer said noise is minimal. “The neighbors are fine, because we only have hens, so they do not crow,” Schaefer said. “But somebody else in the neighborhood had a rooster that would crow.” However, there are two challenging points in raising the flock of birds – winter and during peak egg production. While chickens can survive outdoor temperatures near zero degrees, it is important to keep them dry and free of moisture to prevent frostbite.

raising chickens for 4-H projects are allowed to keep the birds, according to Village Administrator Jennifer Frederick. But it appears the trend may be moving to change those local laws. “While many cities and municipalities have restrictions on urban poultry – or prohibit it outright – the strength and popularity of the local foods movement means that in many areas these ordinances are being reconsidered,” the UW-Extension noted.
