Truck, personnel top fire department list By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The times are changing and with it, so do the needs of the Antioch community and the equipment needed by the Antioch Fire Department. The Antioch Joint Fire Committee recently discussed needs that should be planned for and met in a three-year period. Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon reported that the new used ambulance is being equipped and reviewed by the
Illinois Department of Health and will be ready soon. A ladder truck is currently up for sale and, as Nixon explained to the committee at the Feb. 17 meeting, the best replacement is a quint combination pumper truck. According to Nixon, this truck is smaller and more easily maneuvers through subdivision roads and has five functions: pump, water tank, fire hose, aerial device, and ground ladders. The ladder truck, Nixon

The ladder on the ladder truck is 102 feet and the ladder on the quint is 75 feet, so this better serves needs in the Antioch community. A tanker is needed with the ladder truck and together those cost $1.2 million. The quint costs about $750,000 and serves both purposes. Nixon also explained that

just inside the main door. The lower level contained offices that would be used over the years for a variety of organizations. Prior to the building of Memorial Hall, Village Board meetings were held either at the Richmond Bank Building or in the office of the Richmond Gazette, the village newspaper. In 1908, Memorial Hall became the official home for village board meetings. That was also the year the local high school began to use the auditorium for physical education classes. By 1930, for the school to use the auditorium space for basketball games, renovations were needed to make the court regulation size and to add showers. The renovations were completed without expense to the village due to a grant received by the school. With the completion of the renovations, the stage had been reduced in size as well as the dressing rooms and the balcony had also been reduced in size so as not to extend over the basketball court. For many years, the auditorium was the home of a popular touring company, the J. B. Routnar Players. This group was well known throughout Wisconsin and northern Illinois for its production of family entertainment. Melodramas, popular from the 1920s to the 1940s, were among some of their most loved performances. The stage curtain was a unique affair on which local businesses could have an advertisement hand-painted. The advertisers paid $1 per week for their ads. Memorial Hall has been the home of almost every organization found in Richmond through the years. The village clerk’s office was on the lower level, as was the police department. New facilities have since been built as the village has grown. Until 1930 two jail cells on the lower level were available for police use. The American Legion, the senior citizens

Alexander Garcia, of Twin Lakes, Wis., is slated to appear at a pre-trial hearing Friday following arraignment in Kenosha County Circuit Court Thursday. Garcia, 25, is facing a felony charge of aggravated battery causing great bodily harm, stemming from an alleged Christmas morning attack of 58-year-old Thomas Eppers Sr. at his Twin Lakes home. The 25-year-old Garcia was bound over for trial at a Jan. 15 preliminary hearing where Court Commissioner Jon Mason found probable cause a crime occurred. In the preliminary hearing last month, two Twin Lakes police officers testified, stating that Eppers Sr. was unconscious when authori-
ties arrived at the residence in the 1100 block of Pebble Beach Court. An aluminum baseball bat was allegedly used in the beating, according to testimony from Twin Lakes officer Matthew Yusten. Citing the extent of injuries, Twin Lakes Fire and Rescue transported Eppers Sr. to Aurora Memorial Hospital in Burlington, where Flight for Life helicopter airlifted him to Wauwatosa’s Froedtert Hospital. At the preliminary hearing, Officer Katie Hall reported to court officials there was resentment brewing between Garcia and Eppers Sr., noting a prior altercation in La Crosse. During that incident, Garcia allegedly became unruly toward Eppers, resulting in Garcia getting pushed into

Where’s the peanut butter? It was a normal unassuming typical Tuesday, the day the peanut butter went missing. I couldn’t believe it myself. Although looking back, it shouldn’t have been too big a surprise. But I’m jumping ahead of the story. I enjoy a piece of peanut butter toast on occasion. Last Tuesday was going to be one of those occasions. I took out the bread and the toaster and opened the cupboard to fetch the peanut butter. It was gone. I was puzzled at first, thinking perhaps someone put the peanut butter in an alternate location. I looked behind other items on the shelf but the tea bags and hot cocoa were not hiding the peanut butter. I checked the likely places in the kitchen: the fridge, pantry and cupboards and came up empty. I went to my boys’ bedrooms and looked on the dressers, bookshelves and under the beds. There wasn’t a ground peanut to be had. I even rummaged through the garbage. Maybe someone tossed the peanut butter in there. Stranger things have happened. I’ve found cutlery, plates and cups in the garbage on prior occasions (but that’s another article). After all my searching, I remained – in a word – peanutbutterless. (And hungry.) I was perplexed. We don’t purchase the little snacksize peanut butter. Our jar is economy-grade and hefty. There weren’t many places one could stuff a large jar of peanut butter. Nor did I think someone had eaten the entire jar. That would take some doing.

The people living with me are capable of enormous consumption. They are mostly teenage boys and teenage boys are notorious for their eating aptitudes. I don’t want to brag, but my boys can down an entire box of Triscuits while waiting for the oven to preheat so they can cook and eat a whole pizza (or two). And that’s just an after-school snack. But a nearly full economy-size jar of peanut butter would be a little much – even for boys with gargantuan snacking talents. Still, I knew I hadn’t touched the peanut butter. It had to be one of them. It was a mystery, and my middle name is practically Scooby Do, so I did what any ordinary, 2016 CSIinclined mom would do. I sent a group text: “Who took the peanut butter?” I typed in the frustrated-face emoji to further communicate my angst. My husband, who is well versed in our weird and wacky life because he has also retrieved forks and spoons from the garbage, replied with the smiley face emoji. That guy gets me. I had to smile. Over the years we’ve learned sometimes you have to laugh at the oddity of any given situation. It’s either that or go crazy. And if we went loco, who’d be around to search for the peanut butter? Within three minutes of sending the first text, I’d heard from all the innocents, who were adamant about their peanut butter deficiencies. Then I got the message I’d been waiting for. The confession. Indeed, one child did take the entire jar of peanut butter – for a school project. What can a mom say to that? School projects trump breakfast any time of the day. I beamed with pride; my son went to the effort of remembering he had a school project. Then I reached for the strawberry jam. My stomach was rumbling and the toast was just about ready. In celebration of the cookie Area Girl Scouts to highlight 2016 sales campaign
This weekend, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will participate in National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, a celebration of the annual sales of Girl Scout Cookies. The event gives girls in northern Illinois a chance to show off their cookie-selling skills by participating in booth and direct sales throughout the area. It also gives the regional organization an opportunity to highlight its most innovative and successful cookie entrepreneurs and what they plan on doing with their cookie funds to benefit their communities. Through the program’s “5 Skills,” each young #cookieboss develops creative and resourceful ways to sell cookies. The more cookies girls sell, the more money they have to invest in community service projects, learning experiences and travel opportunities. The program teaches girls basic business skills and is intended to instill a lifelong sense of civic responsibility that creates leaders, according to area leaders. One hundred percent of the net revenue raised through Girl Scout Cookie sales in northern Illinois stays with the Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois and its troops, according to the organization.

Wind whipped
A section of a light pole, victim of Friday’s heavy winds, hangs precariously in the Toft Avenue village parking lot between Orchard and Lake streets on Sunday in Antioch. Barricades were placed around the pole in order to redirect traffic. Wind gusts of around 50 mph blew through Lake County last Friday causing wind damage across the area. Downed power lines and trees caused traffic delays in several areas and the roof was blown off of a Waukegan apartment building.

Training on overdose reversal meds offered Area residents have a chance to get trained on the use of drug overdose reversal medications. The opioid overdose reversal drug, naloxone, has been used by emergency medical personnel for decades and is now being used by police of-
ficers in Lake County, who are often first on the scene and can administer the drug to an overdose victim, significantly increasing the chance of survival. Live4Lali offers naloxone trainings at its free walk-in clinic along with peer-to-peer support services, substance
use education, group therapy programs and more. Recently, the Lake County Opioid Initiative’s Police Naloxone Program marked its 50th life saved. Learn more about the resources available at www. live4lali.org.

“National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend is one of the most exciting events on the Girl Scout calendar,” said Anna Maria Chávez, CEO of Girl Scouts of the USA. “It’s our opportunity to speak with one unified voice and tell the story of the Girl Scout Cookie Program, and everything it does to help prepare the next generation of female leaders. “To help girls unlock their own leadership potential and realize the difference they can make in this world is at the heart of the Girl Scout mission,” she said. “For nearly a century, our cookie program has been one of the most powerful and successful tools in transforming girls into leaders who make a positive impact on their communities.” During National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, cookie customers also get the chance to try the newest Girl Scout Cookie, the gluten-free Toffee-tastic, making its return this year. Classics like Thin Mints, Samoas, and Tagalongs will also be available. Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois cookie booth sales will continue at community locations until March 20. the cabinet capacity on the quint allows the truck to hold extrication equipment needed in cases of severe car wrecks. The department has had two offers for its current ladder truck. One was so low, Nixon said, that it wasn’t even considered. The other offer is still a possibility. The other need mentioned during the joint committee meeting was for personnel. Nixon said he is in need of a full-time second in command and he is having trouble filling supervisor/duty chief positions. The Antioch Fire Department currently has six personnel in dive school. Nixon said that most of the calls for water emergencies occur in the Antioch area, since the largest
number of lakes is here. “We have two active divers,” he said. “We have boat drivers, but most of our divers come from the other communities.” The goal is to eventually have 10 divers. The diving equipment that AFD has is old and deteriorating. It costs about $8,000 to equip one diver and the diving suits are personnel specific. “The suits are totally encapsulating, since we don’t know what they are diving into,” Nixon said. And since the water in the lakes is murky and vision is restricted, several divers are needed for each call for safety. Nixon also talked about automatic aid agreements with other communities.

In celebration of the cookie Area Girl Scouts to highlight 2016 sales campaign This weekend, Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois will participate in National Girl Scout Cookie Weekend, a celebration of the annual sales of Girl Scout Cookies.

Woman injured when car hits horse Coral Road when at 6:13 p.m. her vehicle struck one of two horses that had gotten loose from a local farm. Popp-Steinke was flown by Flight for Life to St. Anthony’s Hospital in Rockford, where she was listed in stable condition. Popp-Steinke had been wearing her seatbelt, her front airbag had deployed, and neither drugs nor alcohol are suspected as having played a role in the
crash. The owner of the horse arranged for it to be euthanized at the scene, due to injuries suffered in the crash. The investigation is ongoing by the McHenry County Sheriff’s Traffic Crash Investigations Unit. Members of Marengo Fire Protection District, Union Fire Protection District, and Illinois Department of Transportation also responded to the scene.

A 52-year-old woman was evacuated by helicopter from the scene of a crash after her vehicle collided with a horse Feb. 17 in unincorporated Coral Township. According to the McHenry County Sheriff’s Office, preliminary investigation indicates that a 2002 Honda CR-V, driven by Lollie Popp-Steinke of Marengo, was traveling east in the 8000 ANTIOCH STUDIO 2nd Fl. reblock of Highway 20 east of

An area resident ponders the costume worn by Marlon Brando in the 1953 movie Julius Caesar now on display at the Lake County Discovery Museum, 27277 N. Forest Preserve Rd., Wauconda, on Feb 16. The costume serves as a compliment to the current major exhibit, Shakespeare’s First Folio. The museum is serving as the exclusive Illinois host institution for the exhibition, on national tour from the Folger Shakespeare Library in worldwide observance of the 400th anniversary of Shakespeare’s death in 1616. Without the First Folio, 18 of his plays could’ve been lost, including Macbeth, Julius Caesar, Twelfth Night, The Tempest, and As You Like It. All 18 appeared for the first time in print in the First Folio. There is still time for area residents to see this bedrock of Western literature, one of only 233 copies known to exist. The exhibit will continue though Feb. 28.

Alternative Prosecution Program announces first success Lake County’s Alternative Prosecution Program has yielded the first successful participant. The participant has completed all the conditions and requirements under his alternative prosecution agreement and court order and exhibited commitment in achieving his goal of a successful termination, according to the office of State’s Attorney Michael Nerheim. “The program was launched in July 2015, and I knew then
that it would be successful,” Nerheim said. “This revolutionary diversion program allows those that qualify an opportunity to learn from their conduct, and pay their debt to society. After completion, they have the ability to re-enter the community as a productive member without the weight of a felony conviction following them for the rest of their life.” The Alternative Prosecution Program was created for first-time, nonviolent felony
offenders who, in exchange for accepting responsibility for their criminal conduct, have the opportunity to keep a criminal conviction from being permanently entered on their record. Defendants must pay a $70 fee to apply to the program. The applicant is interviewed by an assistant state’s attorney and, if approved, he or she is required to appear before the State’s Attorney’s Citizen Panel to explain the offense, and provide reasons why he or she
deserves a second chance. The Citizen’s Panel is comprised of 16 volunteers from the Lake County community. After the panel deliberates, a recommendation is made to the state’s attorney regarding the applicant’s acceptance into the program. If the applicant is accepted, the panel will suggest requirements and conditions necessary for the defendant’s successful completion of the approximately yearlong program. Defendants admitted into
the program are ordered to pay restitution, if applicable. Fees and costs of the program include: a fee up to $1,500, a drug test monitoring fee and an anti-crime program contribution. There are no additional costs for to Lake County taxpayers. Upon successful completion of program requirements and payment of all costs and fees, the state’s attorney dismisses the charge in the criminal case, and the participant is eligible to file for an expungement.
However, if a defendant fails to successfully complete the program, the case is returned to court for sentencing on the original case. This diversion program holds offenders accountable, yet allows deserving defendants to have a second chance, according to the state’s attorney’s office. For more information regarding this program, contact Assistant State’s Attorney Lisa Connelly at (847) 377-3000.

group, Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts held meetings at Memorial Hall. It has been used as a polling place and for graduation ceremonies for the local grade schools. The Richmond Public Library used the old police department space as its first home. Although it moved in the 1940s to a portion of the drug store building located on Broadway and Main, it returned to Memorial Hall in 1972, taking over the auditorium as its home until 1990 when a new library was built. At one time village members would gather at Memorial Hall to watch movies. Films are no longer shown here because the projection booth, which was in the balcony, was removed during renovation. Live entertainment continues to be seen at Memorial Hall. A new production company, Theatrebolt, has
plans to make Memorial Hall its home. “Memorial Hall remains the center of activity for Richmond,” said Village Clerk Karla Thomas. “It is where the village residents enjoy activities including local ballet productions, school plays, craft fairs, and live theater. The building can be rented for private corporate events and family gatherings. As stated in the original deeding from McConnell’s bequest, there is still no charge for church or school groups. “ The National Register of Historic Places recognized Memorial Hall as a building of historical significance in 1993. For more than 100 years, Memorial Hall has served as the heart of the Village of Richmond and it appears positioned to do so for many more years.
