Fire department needs itemized Personnel, equipment top list By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT

Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon detailed Antioch Fire Department needs to the Antioch Area Fire/Rescue Joint Committee on March 9. This was not a budgeting session, but a look at future needs for the department. According to committee members, there will likely be a village referendum in November to annex the fire department into First Fire Protection District 1 and subsequently an elected board would replace the Joint Fire Committee and Antioch Village Board involvement. At that point, the new board, which could be expanded to five members, would take over decision making for the fire department. This recent meeting was intended to look at the future needs of the department to help plan ahead to make sure the Antioch Fire Department can meet community fire and rescue needs. The group met at Fire Station 1 for the first time and Antioch Village Board Trustee Scott Pierce requested that future meetings be held there as well. Nixon explained that the roof on Station 1 is original and needs to be replaced soon. He also talked about needing a full-time deputy chief, shift commander staffing and other

staffing needs. Vehicle replacement is also on the list, along with cardiac monitors, dive gear and finishing updates to the bunkroom. The department now has more 120 employees and Nixon said that the two part-time, volunteer deputy chiefs do not have availability to handle the human resource and policy development now required. A full-time deputy chief, according to Nixon, would provide for leadership development and succession planning. Nixon did a market analysis and discovered that in this area, that position pays $80,000 plus benefits. The department pays $30,000 for the two current part-time deputy chiefs, Chris Leinhardt and John Cokefair. Both would retain the rank and would have fewer duties, so their current pay would be reduced accordingly. Nixon also said the department lacks a fire prevention officer that could begin as parttime at a rate of $25,000 a year. The existing duties for the training and medical officers are currently handled in a random fashion because those individuals have limited time to dedicate to the positions. Nixon also explained the vehicle, equipment and facility needs with a summary sheet of
