Some worry about possible impact on downtown
By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
Matt Petro, a representative from Retail Strategies, a national retail recruitment company, pitched his company at the Antioch Village Board Committee of the Whole meeting on March 16. Current Antioch Director of Economic Development Michael Garrigan worked with this company in Plainfield and said they have a good track record of recruiting and closing deals. Petro said the country is experiencing a strong retail recovery and that Antioch is in a good position to recruit for the downtown and outlying corridors. Petro explained Retail Strategies connections with national recruiting conventions held in Las Vegas and Chicago and his company’s ability to market Antioch in those areas. He also explained the firm’s use of research and mobile data collection to help Antioch plan for its economic future. Board discussion did not include a cost for the service. Village Administrator Jim Keim said he would

soon be starting the budgeting process and this program could be included. Several representatives of downtown businesses expressed concern about promotion of that area. Those who spoke appeared to be concerned a retail headhunter might be good for larger stores and national chains but do nothing for existing or potential businesses. Tim Downey, the developer who purchased, updated and expanded the Antioch Theater in 2014 reported the venture a success. “We sold 40,000 tickets the first year,” he reported at the March 16 meeting, “and we have already repaid one loan.” Downey mentioned he was in a theater in another municipality and said that Antioch theater tickets are half the price of others. “We are the best deal,” he said. The challenge Downey faces is that the smaller, secondary theater could use six to 10 more seats. “Its tough to hear someone’s child crying because the theater is full. I’ve been considering

Mayor hopes to make it a destination spot
A food truck operated by Big Daddy Dogs and Creamery will serve food at Fox Lake’s Lakefront Park during the summer of 2016, according to village officials. The seasonal food vendor was recently approved by the village. The food truck will serve the park beginning May 28 and running through Aug. 28. The truck’s hours will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Items served include footlong and standard hot dogs, nachos, chips, pickles on a stick, pop, water and other items. The owner of Big Daddy Dogs and Creamery, Julie Shields, told village officials she is excited for the season to begin. Fox Lake Mayor Donnie Schmit said the food ser-
vice will help make the park a destination spot for local residents and visitors. “Locals love Big Daddy Dogs and Creamery and their added daily presence in Lakefront Park will further brand Fox Lake as a destination to celebrate,” he said, in a news release issued by the village. “We believe Fox Lake is the heart of the Chain and we are doing everything we can in terms of convenience and entertainment to bring in people from Fox Lake and all surrounding communities to celebrate.” The Fox Lake is commonly known as the “Heart of Chain O’Lakes.” Schmit said the community “embraces its rich tradition and history, but also looks to the future for our residents and businesses.”

Those not wishing to use the paper yard waste bags can obtain a 95-gallon yard waste container for $3 per month from Prairieland. Local leaders attend economic summit County seeks ‘one voice’ approach to foster success
McHenry County hosted an economic development summit last month to present incentive programs, new developments and discuss strategies for building collaboration. More than 50 local government leaders, managers and economic development staff attended to learn about how the county can assist their efforts to compete for employers who offer primary jobs to county residents. Encouraging a countywide and “one voice” approach to
economic development will position McHenry County and local governments to be more attractive to business and industry, according to local economic development officials. Jonathan Burch from the Chicago Metropolitan Agency for Planning reviewed the Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy, which is a joint plan for economic development with McHenry, Winnebago and Boone

Mother worries about daughter and grandkids
Dear readers, Because of the grave nature of the request, I went to visit these women and children as soon as possible. I could feel the urgency the grandmother was feeling as her cancer progressed. The time to help definitely was now. I arrived at the grandmother’s small old home. I walked to the door and knocked softly, not wanting to disturb the woman if she was resting. I heard children’s voices and a woman telling them to be quiet because their grandma was sleeping. In a moment, the door was opened by a woman whom I assumed was the daughter. I introduced myself and presented my identification. After we spoke a moment, the woman invited me inside. She told me her mother was resting but we
would have to give up her mother’s home. I asked the daughter how By much time the doctors said SAL her mother had left. The DIMICELI Columnist daughter shared that the doctors said the mother only had a few months at most. This brought on more tears could talk. The woman told as the daughter said, “I don’t me how her mother had told know what I am going to do her about writing a letter to without my mother. She has The Time Is Now to Help. After looking over the home and the amount of repairs that would be needed to make it hospitable for the women and children, I realized sadly she

necessary. I have prayed and prayed you would come in time.” I continued to hold the mother’s frail hand as she caught her breath. “I can finally rest now that I know you are here. I read about The Time Is Now to Help, and I just had a feeling you were the answers to all my prayers.” The mother and I spoke together, and she shared with me her long struggle. She was a young widow and had raised her daughter on her own. Life had not been easy for the mother, but she had always managed to get by. The mother said, “I do not want to leave my daughter and grandchildren in poverty. I know my daughter is hiding some of the financial stuff from me because she does not want to worry me. I know I don’t have much time left. I just want to know they will be OK when I’m gone.” Silent tears were going down her face and I watched as the daughter wiped them away with tissues saying, “Don’t cry, Mom. We will be fine. I already told you I will be getting my old job back with a raise. You just rest and try to relax.” The mother’s grasp on my hand was getting weaker and weaker, so I set her hand down on the bed. I could see she was already struggling to keep her eyes open. The daughter said, “Mom, you can rest now. Sal and I will take care of everything.” The daughter said to me, “She is very tired from the medicine I just gave her. She will sleep some more now. Let’s go talk in the kitchen again.” The daughter and I finished going over their budget and the assistance we would provide. In addition to the refrigerator, we would also pay their overdue utilities to prevent disconnection and having the daughter’s car repaired.
After I looked over both cars, I noted the daughter’s car was in better shape and worth repairing. We provided them with grocery and gas gift cards. The daughter was very excited to hear of the assistance we would be providing. She said, “I can’t wait for my mother to wake up and hear the news. She will be overjoyed. We can’t thank The Time Is Now to Help enough. God bless you.” I told the daughter to keep in touch and promised we would be there in the future to help them get back on their feet. Three weeks passed before I heard from the daughter again. The daughter tearfully told me how her mother had passed peacefully at home with her and the children by her side. The daughter read to me a note the mother had left saying, “Dear Sal, there are no words that can express how grateful I am to you and your organization. I am finally able to let go and join my dear husband in heaven. I can go to heaven knowing my daughter and grandchildren are safe and will be fine when I am gone. God bless you for this priceless gift you have given my family.” The daughter and I were both crying after she finished reading the note. When I could finally speak again, I told the daughter about the plan I had worked out over the past few weeks for her and the children. The daughter was returning to her job the following week. Her car was repaired and now a safe, reliable vehicle to get her to her job. The daughter and children would stay in the mother’s home until the beginning of the next month when we would provide security deposit and two month’s rent so they could move into an affordable

told the daughter when the foreclosure was final, we would be there to help them with first month’s rent and security deposit. We also would trade a donated refrigerator for their broken refrigerator to get them through the next few months with refrigerated food. The daughter began crying again, this time happy tears. She said, “You have no idea how much this is going to help us. We have been eating boxed food for weeks. We have been using powdered milk and eating peanut butter sandwiches for dinner. My mom does not feel like eating any of those foods. I can finally get some good food in the house that my mom will hopefully want to eat.” Just then I heard a weak voice calling the daughter’s name through a baby monitor. The daughter explained she used the baby monitor to listen to her mother in case she needed her. The daughter excused herself and rushed to help the mother. After a few minutes, I heard the daughter call me in to see the mother. I followed her voice to what I assumed was the mother’s bedroom. The daughter was helping the mother to sit up with the help of some pillows and tucking the blankets lovingly around her. She helped her mother take a sip of water from a glass with a straw. Just then the mother looked up and met my eyes. I saw the ravages of the disease that was slowly stealing her life away. I also saw the look of relief that crossed her face when she realized we were there to help. The mother reached out for my hand, and I hurried over to take it. The daughter pushed over a chair she said she used to sit with her mother at night. I sat down next to her and introduced myself. The mother said weakly, “There are no introductions

Dear W.C., I am not writing this letter for myself, I am writing for my daughter. I am at the end stages of breast cancer. I have been fighting this for over four years. I do not have much time left, but I desperately need to know my daughter and grandchildren will be able to survive once I’m gone. I know I am the reason she is struggling to get by. I have had multiple surgeries and rounds of chemo and radiation. After my mastectomy and when I began chemo, I became so ill she insisted on moving in to my home to care for me. She had to take many days off work to take care of me. Last year she gave up her job completely as I became more and more incapacitated. We are only getting by on the small amount of child support she receives and my small Social Security. Her unemployment ran out several months ago. We are behind in our utilities. My daughter’s car died and we could not afford to have it fixed, so she is now driving my 16-year-old car that we are surprised still starts. I know I do not have much time left. I do not want to leave this world knowing I am the reason my daughter and grandchildren will be struggling in poverty. Can you please help my daughter get back on her feet so I can leave this world in peace?

County event geared to support crime victims
Treasure hunters
The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office was recently as awarded $5,000 for its 2016 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week event. This year’s observance is April 10 to 16. The theme – Serving Victims, Building Trust, Restoring Hope – underscores the importance of early intervention and victim services in establishing trust with victims, which in turn begins to restore their hope for healing and recovery, according to organizers. Every April, the Office for
Victims of Crime helps lead communities throughout the country in an annual observance of the rights afforded to victims of crime. The award received by the county office was made available by Community Awareness Project funding. The State’s Attorney’s Office project was selected after consideration of 221 applications. The National Association of VOCA Assistance Administrators recommended the proposal’s acceptance based on the efforts to raise public
awareness of crime victims’ rights as well as the services available to victims of crime in Lake County. Final approval of the proposal was made by the Office for Victims of Crime. This is the second year that the State’s Attorney’s Office has received this funding. Plans are underway for an event open to the entire county. Event information will be posted on the office’s website, www.lcsao.org, and the Twitter page @saolakecountyil.

The national accreditation program, jointly supported by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation, sets standards against which the nation’s more than 3,000 governmental public health departments can continuously improve the quality of their services and performance. To receive accreditation, a health department must undergo a rigorous, multi-faceted, peer reviewed assessment process to ensure it meets or exceeds a set of quality standards and measures. “Whenever you see our seal of accreditation, you will know that (the health department) has been rigorously examined and meets or exceeds national standards that promote continuous quality improvement for public health,” Beltran said. “By continuing to improve our services and performance, we can be sure we are meeting the public health needs of those we serve as effectively as possible.” Public health departments play a critical role in protecting and improving the health of people and communities. County event geared to support crime victims The Lake County State’s Attorney’s Office was recently awarded $5,000 for its 2016 National Crime Victims’ Rights Week event.

April. This year, GSNI is celebrating by putting hands and hearts to work at their own beloved camp property, Camp McCormick. Through a generous donation, a forestry plan was conducted at both Camp McCormick and Camp Dean, located at Big Rock, Illinois. The plan included a tree inventory that identified both native and invasive species on the properties. It also provided a comprehensive look at the overall health of the forest systems, and recommendations on how to improve forest viability and biodiversity. With donor funds, GSNI was able to purchase 2,200 native tree species to be planted on Camp McCormick grounds in accordance with the forestry plan. Why is planting trees important? Trees provide solutions to air and water pollution by acting as natural filters. They also play an important role in reducing storm water runoff and soil erosion. Girl Scouts founder, Juliette Gordon Low, was a famous lover of nature. Today, Girl Scouts continues to hon-
or her legacy by promoting respect and love of the great outdoors. This includes developing girls to be stewards of our natural environment across the globe. Girl Scouts has a long history of fostering environmental stewardship by getting girls outdoors to experience nature first-hand. According to the Girl Scout Research Institute, girls who attend camp make lasting memories, form friendships, and build important leadership skills. Girls who attend camp report they are twice as likely to take future actions to protect the environment. Girl Scouts who re-register to be Girl Scouts while at the event and participate in the festivities will have the opportunity to earn an Arbor Day fun patch as well as a re-registration fun patch. For more information on resident and summer camp opportunities offered by the GSNI visit, www.girlscoutsni. org or call (815) 962-5591 to request The Little Book of summer events and camp guide.

Mayor hopes to make it a destination spot A food truck operated by Big Daddy Dogs and Creamery will serve food at Fox Lake’s Lakefront Park during the summer of 2016, according to village officials. The seasonal food vendor was recently approved by the village. The food truck will serve the park beginning May 28 and running through Aug. 28. The truck’s hours will be 8 a.m. to 7 p.m. daily. Items served include foot-long and standard hot dogs, nachos, chips, pickles on a stick, pop, water and other items. The owner of Big Daddy Dogs and Creamery, Julie Shields, told village officials she is excited for the season to begin. Fox Lake Mayor Donnie Schmit said the food service will help make the park a
destination spot for local residents and visitors.

Area lakes were key to growth of Antioch
By Sandra Landen-Machaj
CORRESPONDENT
In the early 1800s, the area known today as Antioch was the homeland of the Pottawatomi Indian Tribe. The Pottawatomi were a semi-nomadic tribe that could be found moving through northern Illinois and southern Wisconsin, hunting and fishing to provide food for their families. This area with its rolling landscape and many glacial lakes was especially rich with wild fowl and fish that lived in and along the lakes and rivers prominent in the area. Life for these Native Americans was good, until the arrival of the white man. As the settlers worked their way west from the east coast, they began to establish settlements along the way. The first recorded settlement in what was to become Antioch was a log cabin built along Sequoit Creek, a tributary of the Fox River. It was on this spot that brothers, Darius and Thomas Gage built the first permanent building – a small cabin – shortly after the winter of 1837. In order for a community to grow, one of the first businesses to be built was often a sawmill and Antioch was no exception. One was quickly built
by Hiram Buttrick in 1839 to provide the lumber needs for the growing community. Many early settlers to the area were members of the religious sect known as The Disciples of Christ or later as the Church of Christ. The name Antioch was chosen in 1843 as Antioch was the name of a city in Turkey, which was known as a center of early Christianity. The town was officially founded prior to the beginning of the Civil War. Lumber is key The town began to grow with small shops to meet the needs of the local residents. A steam gristmill was built by John Elliott in 1856. Settlers continued to arrive, many from Germany and England, establishing more farms in the area. Because of its religious connections, the community was known as a regional center of the abolitionist movement and became a stop on the Underground Railroad. With a strong belief in abolitionism, the village sent a large number of young men to fight in the Union Army during the Civil War. Shortly after the end of the Civil War, the town of Antioch chose to end its incorporation. Many members of the
religious community moved from the area while many of the young men never returned from the war. This was not, however, the end of the community. 1892 saw a rebirth of Antioch as the community reincorporated as the Village of Antioch. With the arrival of the railroad in 1886, Antioch became a local center for vacationers. The tourists made their way here because of the presence of the lakes, which can be found throughout the area. Local farmers began to take in boarders and some added rooms to their homes to accommodate guests, increasing their income. Later hotels and summer cottages were built along the lakes of the area. Both visitors and local residents enjoyed hunting, fishing, boating and other outdoor activities. Gangsters, growth While every community in the area has a story of mobsters living, visiting, or just being seen in the area, it is said that Al Capone owned a summer home on nearby Bluff Lake. Like most communities of the late 1800s and early 1900s, Antioch’s buildings were built of wood. Fires were very common in the area, and often the entire community would burn. After a series of fires, which continued to 1904, the village began to build more brick Apartments buildings and installed a pubANTIOCH/ZION, 2 BR., 1ST FLOOR carpet, gar., all appl + w/d, d/w, lic water system to aid in con$850, $875. Wilmot Mountain upgrades cause ripple effect in community
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
New Wilmot Mountain owner, Vail Resorts, Inc. of Colorado, unveiled a multi-million dollar transformation plan this month, creating a ripple effect in the community on the Wisconsin-Illinois border. The new owner, which purchased the ski hill in January from Stopa LLC, expects to start the $13 million project in the summer. General Manager Taylor Ogilvie, a 38-year-old Lincolnshire, Ill., resident, spent the first two months assessing the ski hill. “Right now we are just doing clean up and getting ready for renovations,” said Ogilvie, who replaced Dennis Sheen upon Vail’s acquisition in January. According to a press release, the company is replacing three ski lifts, upgrading snowmaking equipment, renovating the base lodge and adding new features. Features include a parents’ lounge, a new kids ski and snowboard school facility and an upgraded terrain park. Ogilvie, who used the ski hill as a child, hopes renovations bring in more families. “It is all built to make a

great place for families,” he said. “It is taking a holistic approach for the kids to make it as fun as posTaylor Ogilvie sible.” Citing the age of the three ski lifts, Vail plans to replace them and add a high-speed rope tow in the terrain park and two new surface conveyer lifts. Upgrades to the lifts could increase capacity 45 percent. The base area transformations includes 400 seats, more food and beverage options and Wi-Fi in the bar and lounge areas. The Kids Ski and Snowboard School expects to have a lunch and break room with places for parents to supervise activities. Rob Katz, Chairman of Vail Resorts, Inc., said through a press release that guests can expect a better experience. “We think our guests from Chicago and Milwaukee will be thrilled with the investments we are making at Wilmot for the 2016-17 ski season,” Katz said.
A ripple effect With Wilmot Mountain set for renovation in the summer, Wilmot Mountain Flea Market is relocating to the Kenosha County Fairgrounds, according to several sources. The originally offered alternative at Wilmot Mountain was deemed inadequate by the Flea Market. “We simply offered them the use of the tubing area,” Ogilvie said. “But they said it was too small.” The Flea Market informed
people via social media last month of a potential move, with approval from the Kenosha County Fair Board two weeks later. Phone calls and emails to contacts listed on the Flea Market website went unreturned. “Vail Properties purchased Wilmot Mountain and will be undertaking a huge renovation project in the summer of 2016. Vail Properties tried to accommodate the market by offering us the use of the tubing area parking lot,” the website stated. Kelly Ladyga, vice president of corporate communications for Vail Resorts, Inc., said changes were inevitable, citing January’s news release. “As we had indicated in our acquisition announcement of Wilmot, we plan to completely transform the experience at the ski area over the coming months and in time for the 2016-2017 winter season,” Ladyga said. Subsequently, the Wilmot Union High School Board voted 4-0 in its regular meeting last week to allow the Fairgrounds use of the student parking lot every weekend, with exception to graduation.

While crews at Wilmot Mountain are cleaning up in preparation for upgrades, Vail Resorts is drawing up renderings, Ogilvie said. “We have been engaging with architects and engineers and we should have artist renderings,” he said. “A lot of pieces have to come together.” Following completion of renderings, general contractors can bid on the project, Ogilvie said. “Our practice in this project is to definitely go local,” he said.

Program allows students to bench bullying behaviors By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
he Buddy Bench not only raises awareness of schoolyard bullying, but can also reinforce positive behaviors in area schools. Jim Scherrer, CEO of Scherrer Construction, launched the nonprofit organization Scherrer Cares Buddy Bench Program in 2014 as a means of giving back to the community. “Due to our heavy involvement in school construction as well as personal experiences from myself and other employees, we decided to take a stand against bullying by launching the Scherrer Cares Buddy Bench Program,” Scherrer said. After the organization donated its first bench at a school in Omro, the Burlingtonbased business reached out to local schools that include Randall Consolidated, Lakewood School in Twin Lakes and Silver Lake’s Riverview. Both Randall and Lakewood unveiled the Buddy Bench in assemblies at their schools.
Schools introduce the benches in different ways including presentations on bullying, guest speakers and student involvement. “Theater skits are done by the older students to teach the younger students how to use the Buddy Bench,” Scherrer added. Joseph Sellenheim, Director of Student Services at Randall, believes the bench is symbolic and emphasizes kindness among students. “Any time you can put something tangible in the building that helps you convey the message to students that are positive, it is a real asset to the school,” Sellenheim said. Randall fifth-grade student Allie Andersen, who is a junior representative, was part of the all-school assembly Andersen said the buddy bench offers a place of refuge for her fellow students, and it also encourages her classmates. “I think that the Buddy Bench is a really good way to stop bullying and make people a lot happier,” Andersen said. “If you have

Bullying is most prevalent when students are isolated, officials said. “It is setting up those safe zones for students to have an opportunity to express a need, and gives people an opportunity to step in help somebody in need,” Price said. Sellenheim agreed, stating it fosters friendship and unity at Randall School. “If a kid is sitting at the bench, and if they feel left out and need a friend, then it’s someone’s cue to go over there and help,” Sellenheim said. “The Buddy Bench is a nice symbol as an antibullying tool, and is a physical reminder for kids to be kind to others and be inclusive.” The anti-bullying tool is expanding, with several more schools anticipating their own benches, according to Scherrer. Locally, orders are in from Salem Grade School, Bristol School, Williams Bay, Wheatland Center School, Winkler School of Burlington and Tibbets Elementary of Elkhorn.
