Antioch’s historic downtown shops seek revitalization By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
One by one, various downtown Antioch businesses are sprucing up their image. Recently, the Antioch Theater, under the leadership of Tim Downey and with the aid of the village and other downtown business owners like Something Sweet, refurbished and expanded the Antioch Theater. Downey took the aging structure, restored it to the 1920’s vintage look and moved the technology into the current year as well as adding a smaller theater. “It’s been a great success,” he reported to the village board at the recent committee of the whole meeting. Downey said 40,000 tickets sales were sold last year and birthday parties and other special events were well received. “I was concerned that parking could be an issue,” he said, “but I have not heard one complaint this entire years.” Something Sweet mother and daughter owners Michele Michel and Ashley Michel were one of the local businesses that sponsored the Antioch Theater improvements. And all would like to see even more cooperation between the downtown businesses. During a recent interview

with Downey and the Michels from Something Sweet, all pointed out that however far any downtown customer walks from a parking space to a business, its not as far as walking from the parking in a mall or large box store. And all three are looking forward to future improvements in the downtown area that will entice customers to visit establishments other than the one that is their goal. “I have been here over 18 years, Michele Michel said, “and its been good. People want to come downtown and we could give them more reason to be here.” The three business owners praised the efforts of the chamber and the village in organizing events like the carnival and wine and beer walks that bring folks from the surrounding area into the village. All were encouraged about six months ago when the village, under the leadership of Dustin Nielsen, began an exploration of how to revitalize the downtown. Nielsen has left the village, but now current Economic Development Director Michael Garrigan has begun the process again. The first meeting was scheduled for March 28 at

Saturday’s parade was followed by an Easter egg hunt and the rubber duck race at Buttrick’s Mill. Chilly temperatures in the mid-40s did little to dampen the enthusiasm of those gathered. Polson’s Natural Foods and Dairy Queen are two Antioch businesses that have recently spruced up facades to make downtown Antioch more appealing.
• Downtown
(Continued from front page)
around noon. Garrigan said he started with a smaller group of business leaders and will soon expand the discussion. Michele Michel shared some of her ideas during a recent interview. “We have so much local talent,” she said, “that various businesses could offer music during the weekends.” Another idea is to develop consistent business hours. “We had various groups come through to view the Dicken’s characters,” she
said, “but sometimes very few stores were open.” She would like to see businesses develop those hours and then the chamber could include that information when advertising the Dickens characters between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Some businesses have already begun updating building facades. Recently, Polson’s Natural Foods updated the façade with attractive, natural stone and a new sign. Downey and Michels said
they believe when the downtown business owners, village and chamber pull together, things will only continue to improve. It almost seems like Antioch is Lake County’s historic undiscovered gem. Downey said he would like to see signs on Highway 173 that let passers-by know how close they are to Antioch’s charming hometown downtown. As things move forward with a future downtown revitalization, that could happen.
Traveling Closet giveaway set for Sunday
The Antioch Traveling Closet is hosting another clothing/toiletries giveaway from 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. on Sunday April 3, at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbeck Drive. Families in need can come and get clothing, shoes, toiletries and haircuts all for free. The closet served about 60 to 70 in December.
Tickets for the luncheon are $39. Jeans are not allowed in the dining room. Remember it’s for the animals. All proceeds go toward the operation of the no-kill shelter. For more information, call (815) 455-9411 or visit http:// www.Assisi.org.

What color is your cat?
I never planned to be the mom of a black cat. I might have chosen a different color, had there been a choice. But there was only one kitten available for adoption the day I went to the rescue shelter five years ago. I could have waited a couple of days for another fur ball to become ready, but patience has never been my strong suit. Our little princess is sweet, friendly and brings a unique personality to our home. She’s also something of a looker, with her sleek ebony coat, jet-black button nose and sea-green eyes. My kitten is none of the above. Well, maybe just a little weird on days ending in Y, but who among us isn’t a little weird some or all of the time? Historically, black cats have gotten a bum rap and I’m here today to set the record straight. There are many reasons to own a black cat (or allow them to own you). I could come up with at least 13, but today, I’ll stick to an even seven. No. 1. Black cats can free you from irrational superstitions. When you live with a black cat, she will

Second man identified in snowmobile incident By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER
The Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources last week released the name of an Illinois man who survived a snowmobiling incident last month that resulted in the death of his riding companion. Brian J. Terry, 49, of Long Grove, survived the Feb. 14 incident in which the snowmobile he was operating on Geneva Lake, Wis., hit open water. Mark G. Reninger, 53, of Wheeling, who was riding with Terry, was pronounced dead at a hospital Feb. 14 after the incident at about 9 p.m. in the Town of Linn. The state Department of Natural Resources, which handled the incident because it occurred on a waterway, initially declined to identify Terry. DNR warden Juan Gomez said Reninger and Terry had traveled across the lake on snowmobiles from Fontana to Lake Geneva earlier the evening of Feb. 14 to have dinner. Terry and Reninger were returning from Lake Geneva back to Fontana, presumably along the same route, at about 9 p.m. when they found themselves in the middle of the lake in open water, Gomez said.

The men were traveling west and encountered open water north of Williams Bay and south of the Lake Geneva Yacht Club. Gomez said a large portion of the lake from Williams Bay almost to Fontana was not frozen at that time. Terry accelerated his snowmobile enough to water skip, and, when he realized the machine was sinking, jumped off the snowmobile on to an ice shelf and called 911, Gomez said. By the time rescue workers arrived, Reninger had been in the water half an hour to 40 minutes, Gomez said. Rescue workers used a Town of Delavan hovercraft to get to the men. Rescue workers got Terry to the shore, and he was taken to a hospital with hypothermia, Gomez said. Rescuers retrieved Reninger from the water, and he was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead. An airboat was also sent from a Fox Lake department. Gomez said both snowmobiles sank and are at the bottom of the lake, which is about 100 to 130 feet deep in that location. Reninger’s death was the sixth snowmobile fatality of the season, according to the DNR.

Story time for all the senses
New library program geared for children with special needs
By Gail Peckler-Dziki
“The presenter, Renee Grassi,” Buesing continued, “is a librarian from Illinois who presents workshops on serving patrons with special needs.” The activities are varied and presented in a regular structure to each program and Nordigian and Buesing present the program every time. The story time starts and ends with a song and during the free time, participants engage in some physical activities and coloring. The leaders use a variety of visual aids to help children focus their attention. There is a schedule board and as each portion of the program is complete, it is noted on the board. A flannel board is used to display figures as the story is told, giving the children a visual aid in addition to seeing the pictures as the story is read. A regular feature is the Mystery Box. When the children arrive, the box is covered. At playtime, it is opened and the children may explore whatever is inside. Attendees are asked to register since the program is currently limited to 10 children with a caregiver. A smaller group allows children and families to feel comfortable in the room without overwhelming or over-stimulating the children, according to the leaders. People can register for the program by calling (262) 877-4281 or visiting the Community Library website, www.communitylib.org and click on the program registration tab.
Last January, Corinne Nordigian and Tara Buesing launched the Sensory Story Hour once a month on Saturday mornings from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Twin Lakes, Wis., branch of Community Library. The next is scheduled for April 16. There is room for 10 students and one caregiver per student. The intended audience is children from ages 2 to 5 with a wide variety of disabilities from physical to emotional to intellectual. The goal of this program is to include children and families who may not otherwise attend story time programs. And the program is planned with them in mind. The stories and activities target tactile, auditory, visual taste and smell senses. past few years.” Trustee Mike Culat, who has a real estate business in Antioch, Ill., said that he thought those who attend the public hearings regarding this issue should make the decision of how to pay. “We should pay attention to those who show up and the public hearings and informational meetings,” he stated. Faber said he preferred a referendum to be scheduled for the November presidential election. “The taxpayers need to decide what they would like to do,” he said. Culat commented that he believed having quiet crossing would improve the resale value of properties along the railroad tracks. The plan is to hold a public hearing first and then an informational meeting. The information will be sent out via the town newsletter, press releases and then letters to those within a quarter mile of the tracks.

There are nine railroad crossings within the Town of Salem that need to be upgraded in order to become train horn-free quiet zones. Eight of them are at 76th Street; Highway AH/276th Ave; 272nd Avenue; 258th Avenue; 104th Street; 264th Avenue; Highway C/Wilmot Road; and Highway JF/119th Street. The first four would require four-quadrant gates, which are two gates on each side to prevent any car from crossing once the gates have come down. The next four require non-traversable channelized medians. These must extend 100 feet on the road from the crossing. Since the first four have either driveways or other roads intersecting them within that 100 feet, the four-quadrant gate is needed. The railroad crosses one private road at 100th Avenue, which would require flashing lights and gates, one
per approach. Town Administrator Pat Casey and Town Engineer Len Roeker have worked on the study and Casey said at the March 21 Committee of the Whole meeting that the improvements would cost the town about $2 million. The board discussed ways to pay for the project. The cost could be spread throughout the town, with the additional amount put on property tax bills. That would add $270 per parcel. There could be a special assessment for those living within a quarter mile of the tracks, which would be at a cost of $2,125 per parcel. Trustee Dennis Faber lives close to the intersection on Highway AH in Camp Lake and commented that when he moved there 30 years ago, there were 23 trains a week and now there are 30 a day. “Thanks for digging into this,” Faber said to Casey. “We have had a number of requests for this over the

Saturday’s parade was followed by an Easter egg hunt and the rubber duck race at Buttrick’s Mill. Chilly temperatures in the mid-40s did little to dampen the enthusiasm of those gathered.
