The land recognized today as Lake County took a diverse route from early Indian land to present day area. The county was once part of Cook County and later McHenry County until it became the area we know today. While Illinois achieved statehood in 1818, it was not until 1831 that Cook County was organized. The area designated as Cook County covered approximately 2,464 square miles with a population of 100 residents. The area itself covered the counties we know today as Lake, McHenry, DuPage, Kane, Will, and present Cook County. Cook
County was named in honor of Daniel Pope Cook, the first Illinois Attorney General. Cook also served as the second United States Congressman from Illinois. The first Cook County Board met in 1831 and consisted of three members, two from Chicago and one from a western suburb known as Naperville (now a part of DuPage County). The county’s population continued to increase, allowing the state legislature to further divide it. In 1836, residents in the west and northwest section of the county found access to Chicago to be difficult and petitioned the state legislature to form a separate county with
a more local county seat. The legislature approved the petition and created the new county of McHenry, which extended from Lake Michigan west to present Boone County, south to today’s Kane County, and North to the Wisconsin border. The county was given the name of McHenry in honor of Major William McHenry for his service in the Indian War of 1812. The town of McHenry was chosen as the county seat because of its location in the center of the county and its proximity to the Fox River. A small courthouse was built on McHenry’s town

Agency needs help caring for disabled
Dear readers, Together we help change the lives of many of our fellow creations, those who are suffering in the pains of poverty and those living in fear, depression and loneliness. Our caring and sharing hearts, led by our love for God, are especially needed for those who are handicapped. I received a letter from an employee of a wonderful place that cares for the handicapped and multiplechallenged fellow creations. The certified nursing assistant told me about an individual who was in a terrible accident and became paralyzed. The person never had any visitors and would cry almost all the time while awake. When asked she were in pain, the answer was, “I wish there was, but I have no feelings in this paralyzed body. I’m so alone and scared.” Most of you reading this can imagine that fear but thank God have not had to endure it or live with it the rest of your life. It is our mission at The Time Is Now to Help to make a difference, a big difference, in the lives of those suffering. I communicated with some very understanding volunteers and finally found four who would commit a few hours each week, long term. This creation of God, whose mobility was taken away by a drunken driver, needed life friends. Four friends who routinely visited, talked and listened, with
handicapped by my cousin who worked at a specialty daycare for the handicapped and poverty stricken. This daycare provided specialty care services for children and adults with multiple disabilities to allow the parents to go to work. Most of the clients could not walk, many were on feeding tubes and could not talk. I would visit them regularly, often providing wheelchairs, clothing and other necessities. We also provided bus trips for outings that the handicapped children and adults would never have had the opportunity to enjoy. The smiles and laughter are what I remember now, not the suffering because of living in extreme poverty while being multiple handicapped. At each visit we would be greeted by name by those who could speak. For those who could not speak, we were greeted by a smile of recognition. They knew if we were there, they would not feel alone and scared, trapped in bodies that did not work. Over the years we have developed friendships with many people struggling with disabilities and challenges. Many of them we have watched as their disabilities progressed. The one common element in all these fellow creations we have helped is their need for friendship. They all were afraid and lonely when we first met them. When we took the time to share our lives with them, they then shared their lives

wonderful hearts that would create a relationship over time. This handicapped person began to look forward to the four different visitors and spending a few hours with each new and growing friendship every week. All had great faith and felt the direction of love by our gracious Lord. After a month, this person was much happier, still living in the same body with the same challenges, but full of stories to tell. A new purpose emerged as she shared in each new friend’s life. She felt cared for, loved and now the extreme loneliness was gone. And all this took was a few hours a week shared by gracious volunteers. I visited many more times and now I saw laughter and joy. What had been an impossible situation was turned into a positive lifechanging one, and this was all because of the wonderful God-loving people who cared. The Time Is Now to Help has provided assistance to many of our handicapped fellow creations over the years. When I first began this mission, I was led to help relieve the suffering of the

with us, including sharing their challenges. Some were afraid as their diseases progressed and voiced these fears to us. Just voicing these fears out loud seemed to help to ease their fear. Just having someone to talk to and someone to listen made a huge difference in their lives. We have a place in need of our friendship and support in our community. It is Inspiration Ministries. It is a non-profit organization that houses and cares for up to 80 handicapped residents. I visited and toured this God-loving, caring facility several months ago. I found Inspiration Ministries to be a clean and orderly community where our fellow creations can live and receive the care they need. The people who work there and the volunteer board members are a Godloving group of people giving their best. The two areas I found them in need of our help are their budget shortfalls and their need for additional staff. Where do they need additional staff? They need a group of social workers who not only love their job but also their clients. They need to let their caring and sharing hearts go out to all the residents and spend time removing their fears of loneliness by being longterm friends. This would be a small-specialized group that would be there year round. The residents will get to know them and spend anticipated, scheduled time
with, knowing that they are not alone. They would have visitors who care for them and joy to look forward to. This will also create four new positions, giving employment to those who are in need. Not every resident at Inspiration Ministries has family or friends that visit. Many spend their time alone. Residents need friends they can count on to visit them several times a week, friends who will listen and friends who will share their own stories. The positions of these social workers will bring life and love back to those suffering in loneliness. The life given back to those who are physically challenged will feed their minds with wellbeing, just like the handicapped woman and the many multiple-challenged students we helped. So how can all of us help? Well we came up with a way to bring Inspiration Ministries budget up to meet all the necessary requirements to house, feed and clothe its residents, provide utilities, maintain the property and buildings and provide the best care. The way we together can help this wonderful ministry is by supporting their resale shop. Many people do not even know they have a resale shop. It has been floundering at best. Together we can make it a great success. Every one of our supporters, readers and friends can help. We all have too much stuff. Every one remodels their homes

Slices of life
Two times the excitement (and stress) Life can be exciting. And stressful. And sometimes exciting things – even though they are good things – create stress. Even though you promise yourself you won’t let them this time. You know you shouldn’t complain. Excitement is excitement after all. You are aware you should take it all in. Don’t sweat the small stuff (it’s all small stuff) and simply enjoy the milestones that are headed your way. Your logical mind knows this. But knowing and doing are two different things and when you wake up at 2 a.m. worrying about invitation lists, plus-ones, napkin colors or whether a popcorn bar beats out a candy buffet you understand that you are not

doing well at the celebratory portion of your impending celebration. My son will graduate from high school in a month. Yay. He made it! Whew! My daughter will get married two months after his graduation. Yay. She and her fiancé made it! Whew! Graduations and weddings are delightful, festive, wonderful occasions. They signify the end of a successful journey and the promise of a new beginning.
They are days to enjoy and celebrate. But, before I can break out the champagne for a welldeserved toast, we still have things to do. So many things to do. We have to get the announcements (graduation) and invitations (wedding) ordered and we have to pick a theme for the party (graduation) not to mention the food and my boys will need suits and shoes (for the wedding) and we’ll want to find some lawn games and extra chairs (for the graduation). Speaking of that we need to rake the lawn and weed the garden before the (graduation) party and we have to come up with
centerpiece ideas for both events and we’ve yet to decide between cake or cupcakes (wedding) while cookies might be an option (graduation) and I’ve still got to choose a dress (for the wedding) not to mention a dress for the bride and bridesmaids and flower girls and so many other things that need to get decided and get done. Deep breath. Normally one big celebration is enough to keep me up at night. But two? That’s enough to put a gal way over the edge. Or not. Come on girl, get a grip. I have two major life celebrations in the coming months. How lucky can a person get? I realized
yesterday I was focusing on the tasks involved and ignoring the joy that I should be feeling about these upcoming events and that’s simply no way to celebrate. At least not if you want to celebrate successfully – which I most assuredly do. What would be the point otherwise? The days will come – and go. Someone might notice if all the napkins don’t match or if the cake leans slightly or if we run out of pulled pork, but I doubt it. And even if something does go wrong (and it probably will) and someone actually notices (and they probably won’t), I doubt they’d care enough to even notice that they noticed. Because when we
celebrate, we don’t come to the party for the decorations or the games or the music or even the pulled pork. We come together to congratulate and wish the graduate or the bride and groom all best. Because we care. It’s as simple as that. Anything beyond is just icing on the cake – or cupcake, depending on which way we decide to go. square miles are land and the other 935 square miles are water. Water plays an important part in both the economy and style of life in the county. The many lakes, more than 90, attract visitors throughout the summer as do the activities held on Lake Michigan in the communities which front the lake. Summertime swimming and boating can be found throughout Lake County. Open land has been preserved by Lake County in their many forest preserves which offer residents and visitors great opportunities to enjoy the outdoors through the seasons. Golf courses are open to the public and historical homes are preserved throughout the county. Lake County Historical Societies work to preserve the history of the area. Today, both Lake and McHenry counties have preserved their own identities offering a more open, pastoral feeling when compared to the heavier populated eastern reaches of the area.

In October 1875, a fire broke out in the courthouse destroying much of it. At this time proposals were again made to move the county seat back to Libertyville or to the community of Highland Park. Some also suggested that a location more central to the county be chosen. Waukegan prevailed and the courthouse was rebuilt and continues to be the expanding center of county business. The county seat was moved to a more central location in 1844 originally platted to be called Centerville, but in 1845 its name was changed to Woodstock. Woodstock continues to be the McHenry County seat. As Lake County became an entity of its own, it needed a new county seat. Independence Grove which is now known as Libertyville, was the site chosen. a local business. McHenry’s term as county seat was short-lived. The State Legislature further divided the McHenry County on March 1, 1839, when it separated the county into two separate ones. The eastern half became Lake County while the western half remained McHenry County. McHenry did not remain its county seat of the smaller McHenry County for long. It remained the county seat until 1841 when citizens voted to remove Independence Grove as the county seat and named Little Fort, now known as Waukegan, as the county seat. Land was purchased from the State of Illinois as a site for the courthouse. The first courthouse in Little Fort was built on this land in 1844, at a cost of $4,000. The building was used as a courthouse and a jail until a county administration office was built in 1853. In October 1875, a fire broke out in the courthouse destroying much of it. Defining the meaning OF
life
Area couple BY Gail
Peckler-Dziki
CORRESPONDENT
hey were high school sweethearts, prom dates who had gone their separate ways. After graduating from Wilmot (Wis.) High School in 2001, B.J. Rayniak moved to Chicago to study film directing at Columbia College. Angie Fieblekorn graduated from Wilmot in 2002 and stayed in her hometown, working at Wilmot Mountain Ski Hills as office manager. From Chicago, B. J. ended up in Los Angeles for a few years and moved back home in 2007. One evening, B. J. went to Wilmot Mountain with some friends and he and Angie met once again. The rest is history. And as with all history, there were easy parts and difficult parts. “Our son, was born three years after we were married and it was an exciting time,” B.J. said. John “Johnny” Francis Rayniak IV was born on Oct. 2, 2014, and lived most of his life at Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin in Milwaukee. B.J. and Angie spent a lot of time there and stayed at the Ronald McDonald House. B.J. and Angie’s newborn child suffered a myriad of medical problems, each one

on its own a major challenge and together, these proved an insurmountable obstacle. “We were able to take him home for a few hours one night in December,” B.J. said. “But had to return to Children’s Hospital the next morning. Johnny died on Jan. 2, 2015. On the way out, hospital staff told them a frightening statistic.
They told us that many couples who share an experience of having a newborn die end up in divorce. We weren’t willing to let that happen.”

“They told us that many couples who share an experience of having a newborn die end up in divorce,” B.J. said. “We weren’t willing to let that happen.” “We needed to find a greater common
goal, something we could work toward together,” he explained. To move forward, B.J. and Angie reached into the past for friends and dreams. “Richard (Blake, son of Jack Blake who taught junior high science at Riverview Grade School) and I had been making films since we were in grade school,” B.J. said. “I took classes at Wilmot with Deb Fragale, who taught me about film making and nurtured my love for it.” Richard Blake is a working actor and aspiring scriptwriter who lives in Los Angeles. Fragale remembers B.J. and the creative work he did while studying in her classes. “B.J. and the other students in that class were the best,” she said. “They were all so personable. The film B.J. made for class was called, ‘The Bassett Hound Project,’ a spoof of ‘The Blair Witch Hunt,’ popular at
the time.”
A dream reawakened B.J. has always had a passion for filmmaking and he and Angie decided that would help them move forward. Angie added her particular skills and passions of painting and photography. B.J. had numerous scripts he had written over the years and one in particular seemed suited for this new purpose. It was about a man named Jake Riley who became terminally ill. “His life-long dream had been to make a film,” B.J. said. “And then he discovered he had 12 months to live, so he decided to make his dream come true.” With a little tweaking, he and Angie developed a script about a couple that
HI-LITER • WEDNESDAY, MAY 11, 2016 • 9 experienced the loss of their newborn son. B.J. and Angie drove from their home in western Kenosha County to Los Angeles. They filmed in Frisco, Colo., and Las Vegas on the way. When they reached Los Angeles, the scene with Richard and B.J. was shot and “The Definition of Life” was one of the last films to be shot in the old Los Angeles Herald Examiner building, which was an independent movie studio prior to its recent conversion into condominiums. Various locations in southeastern Wisconsin were also used. The Red Geranium restaurant in Lake Geneva was the location for the dinner scene when Jack (B.J.) and Alice (Angie) decided to go on the road trip. The fictitious film festival at which the film the couple produced in the movie is shot outside Antioch Theater and inside the Wilmot High School auditorium. Both Fragale and Blake have parts in this film that tells how Jack and Alice (and B.J. and Angie) came to see the definition of life through the death of their son. It took a year to shoot the nearly 30-minute film. It was difficult, B.J. said, and there were times when they needed a break from the filming and editing. The entire cast was friends, co-workers and close family, including B.J.’s parents, John and Mary Rayniak. Other local sites were Children’s Hospital of Wisconsin, Siebert’s Pub and the Lynch car dealership in Burlington. Angie’s mom Barb Fiebelkorn helped get permission to film a scene in the reception area at Riley Construction one weekend.
Shawn Roby and Lee Shannon at the Village of Antioch worked to get Lake Street closed for one evening for the filming in front of the Antioch Theater. The first showing of the film was at the Plaza Theater in Burlington and the second at the Community Library in Salem. B.J. has entered the film in various film festivals around the United States and overseas and is waiting to hear which festivals will show the film. The couple spent $1,500 to make the film and rent The Plaza for the first showing of this project. The filming of their story brought closure to one chapter and opened another, the beginning of a new business and the birth of their second son, Miles Parker. He is happy and healthy.
Coming soon Another fruit of their labor is a new venture Rayni Day Productions LLC. The digital-media company focuses on creating a stronger visual presence for business and producing independent films. And B.J. and Richard are gearing up for their second independent production, “The Rocket.” The movie is based on a true story about a local high school star football player who was injured and could no longer play football. He saw his dream of athletic greatness slipping away. That is until the cross country coach encourages him to become a runner to further develop his athletic abilities. This is planned as a full-length film and the duo is seeking to raise $25,000 to

Ryan says it will take work to unify his party House Speaker also announces mobile office stops
By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER
Speaker of the House Paul Ryan said Monday morning that unifying the Republican Party before the November elections is of utmost importance. It’s why he spoke honestly about his support of Donald Trump last week in Burlington, Wis. Ryan, in an interview with CNN’s Jake Tapper, said, “I’m just not ready to do that at this point. I’m not there right now.”
He was referring to backing Trump as the Republican Party’s presidential candidate, and later added that he hoped to be able to back Trump and unify the part. Unity, Ryan said Monday in an interview with Southern Lakes Newspapers, is the party’s biggest issue right now. “We can win up and down the ticket,” Ryan said. But, he added, in order for that to happen, Trump and the leaders of the Republican Party will have to find common ground.

“I feel good, because I was being honest,” Ryan said of the CNN interview, which was filmed at Veterans Terrace in Burlington. Ryan came to the area for a kickoff rally on behalf of Republican Sen. Ron Johnson, who is also seeking re-election this fall. Ryan said he hadn’t expected the race to the Republican presidential ticket to end as soon as it did, and said pretending that there was unity would be ignoring the problems that exist. Following the interview over the weekend, former 2008 Republican vice presidential nominee Sarah Palin blasted Ryan, saying his political career was “over” and that she would back Ryan’s primary challenger in Wisconsin, Paul Nehlen. Ryan said he wasn’t worrying about those comments, though, as “people here know who I am, what I stand for,” and he would rather endure an “awkward moment” than sit
of media interviews to tout his mobile office, which was headed out Monday. “I love this part of our office,” Ryan said. “This helps me get out to every community in this district.” Ryan said the mobile office allows him to see constituents that might not otherwise be able to get to his offices in Racine, Kenosha and Janesville. He said this is important for senior
citizens who may need help resolving issues with Medicare. “We can take their documents, scan them, and bring them back to our offices to deal with them,” said Ryan, who added that the mobile office also allows his staff to spend more time in small towns and rural areas. He has stops scheduled in several area communities in May and June.
Crash claims life of Bristol woman, 21 By Jason Arndt control, veered off the road- lease stated. STAFF WRITER
A one-car crash early Sunday morning claimed the life of a 21-year-old Bristol, Wis., woman, according to a Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department news release. Alyssa D. Lass, the lone occupant in a 2007 Chevrolet Malibu, had been traveling south on Highway W/Fox River Road in the Town of Randall. Wis., when she lost
way, and struck a tree, the release said. Responders, including Silver Lake and Salem rescue personnel, arrived to the scene in the 10600 block of Highway W at about 3:30 a.m., where Lass was later pronounced dead by the Kenosha County Medical Examiner’s Office. “The cause of the accident is under investigation,” the re-
It is the second fatality along Fox River Road in a little more than two weeks, with the first April 22, when a 50-year-old Spring Grove man died when his Ford pickup truck left the road and ended up in a nearby pond. Cause of that crash, which occurred near the American Girl facility in the 12400 block of Fox River Road, is still under investigation.

Area teacher to attend national historical conference Trevor-Wilmot (Wis.) Consolidated School teacher Jason Reinholz is one of four teachers in the United States to receive The Civil War Trust scholarship. The Civil War Trust works to preserve America’s highly important battlefield land, and educate the public about the significance of those battlefields in U.S. History, according to a release issued by Trevor-Wilmot’s Director of Curriculum and Instruction Tracy Donich. Reinholz, who teaches seventhand eighth-grade social studies, has an opportunity to attend a national conference in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. The scholarship is available to “current teachers who are enthusiastic
about teaching about the Civil War in their classrooms.” During the trip, Reinholz will have an opportunity to meet the three other teachers and network with site experts to learn more about battlefields. The group will take part in walking tours of Gettysburg and listen to elite historians, while absorbing the sights, sounds, and emotions connected to various key battles. Reinholz will bring that experience and new understandings of the Civil War back for the benefit of students at Trevor-Wilmot, Donich said. The scholarship covers all fees related to the four day experience in early June.
