Antioch police parking lot designated a safe internet exchange zone By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
From Calgary, Canada to Meridian, Idaho, local police departments are inviting people to complete online transactions in police department parking lots. The Antioch Police Department is following suit and has made the front (south) parking lot a convenient place for residents to complete internet exchanges, like those typically made on Craigslist. “Antioch village Trustee Mary Dominiak approached the chief with the idea after several Antioch residents inquired to her,” Antioch Police Sgt. Geoff Guttschow said. The benefit for such a “safe place” is that instead of having a stranger come to your home or meeting the stranger at his home or in a vacant parking lot, residents can complete internet transactions in full public view.
The front, or south, parking lot at 433 Orchard St. has been designated for the completion of such transactions and no prior permission is needed. While an officer may not always be present in that parking lot, the proximity of the police department affords security to both parties on the transaction. Should either party of the transaction require police assistance, it’s a quick call away. Any issues that arise out of any transaction, short of a criminal act, will be considered a civil matter between the parties and not be investigated by the police department. Although transactions may occur on village property, the village assumes no liability for matters arising from transactions conducted in the police department parking lot.

Enjoying summertime on the water By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
It’s summertime and the living is easy. It’s a time to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors. Fishing, boating, and swimming become the priorities of the day as the temperatures rise. What better place to be than along the Fox River and the many lakes that are a part of the Chain O’Lakes? The Fox enters Illinois at Antioch and meanders through Lake County, through the Chain O’ Lakes and into McHenry County before it continues to make its way on its own down to the Illinois River.
The Chain O’Lakes is the result of the melting of the Wisconsin Glacier, which left a unique landscape in northern Illinois. The Fox River winds its way down from Wisconsin through Antioch where it connects to a series of lakes, 15 in all. These lakes, known as the Chain O’Lakes collectively, cover more than 7,000 acres of water and includes 500 miles of total shoreline including nearly 50 miles of river shoreline according to the Chain O’Lakes Waterway Agency in their yearly newsletter. The agency oversees the main-
