Antioch police parking lot designated a safe internet exchange zone By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
From Calgary, Canada to Meridian, Idaho, local police departments are inviting people to complete online transactions in police department parking lots. The Antioch Police Department is following suit and has made the front (south) parking lot a convenient place for residents to complete internet exchanges, like those typically made on Craigslist. “Antioch village Trustee Mary Dominiak approached the chief with the idea after several Antioch residents inquired to her,” Antioch Police Sgt. Geoff Guttschow said. The benefit for such a “safe place” is that instead of having a stranger come to your home or meeting the stranger at his home or in a vacant parking lot, residents can complete internet transactions in full public view.
The front, or south, parking lot at 433 Orchard St. has been designated for the completion of such transactions and no prior permission is needed. While an officer may not always be present in that parking lot, the proximity of the police department affords security to both parties on the transaction. Should either party of the transaction require police assistance, it’s a quick call away. Any issues that arise out of any transaction, short of a criminal act, will be considered a civil matter between the parties and not be investigated by the police department. Although transactions may occur on village property, the village assumes no liability for matters arising from transactions conducted in the police department parking lot.

Enjoying summertime on the water By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT
It’s summertime and the living is easy. It’s a time to kick back and enjoy the great outdoors. Fishing, boating, and swimming become the priorities of the day as the temperatures rise. What better place to be than along the Fox River and the many lakes that are a part of the Chain O’Lakes? The Fox enters Illinois at Antioch and meanders through Lake County, through the Chain O’ Lakes and into McHenry County before it continues to make its way on its own down to the Illinois River.
The Chain O’Lakes is the result of the melting of the Wisconsin Glacier, which left a unique landscape in northern Illinois. The Fox River winds its way down from Wisconsin through Antioch where it connects to a series of lakes, 15 in all. These lakes, known as the Chain O’Lakes collectively, cover more than 7,000 acres of water and includes 500 miles of total shoreline including nearly 50 miles of river shoreline according to the Chain O’Lakes Waterway Agency in their yearly newsletter. Shaw, 45, a fugitive of justice, prosecutor said
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
When Sheree Ann Shaw failed to appear at a June 7 court appearance in Illinois, the Twin Lakes woman accused in a fatal crash became a fugitive of justice, according to a McHenry County prosecutor. Shaw’s run ended when the U.S. Marshals service arrested her in Las Vegas June 22, courtesy of a local tip to Twin Lakes law enforcement. “Ms. Shaw was arrested in Las Vegas (June 22) and is in custody,” McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs said. “The state’s attorney’s office will extradite her to Illinois for prosecution.” Shaw, 45, allegedly was under the influence of heroin when she crashed her Ford Taurus into a Harley Davidson Road Glide, operated by Amy Thornton and her husband on North Richmond Road May 6. Initially, Shaw faced a charge of driving without a valid license, but when Thornton died of injuries suf-
fered in the wreck May 15, prosecutors added the felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence causing death on May 20. After McHenry Police failed to locate Shaw in Twin Lakes, they sought help from the U.S. Marshals service, who took her into custody on May 26 and transported her to the Walworth County Jail in Elkhorn. The next day, Shaw was released on a $2,500 bond, contingent on terms and conditions. Terms and conditions included abstaining from alcohol, no possession of illegal drugs and not operate a motor vehicle, with a June 24 extradition hearing scheduled. However, when she failed to appear at a June 7 hearing in McHenry County, authorities issued a warrant for her arrest. According to the Chicago Tribune, Thornton’s family questioned Walworth County’s decision to free Shaw on a minimal bond, noting U.S.

Twin Lakes woman accused in fatal crash arrested in Vegas Shaw, 45, a fugitive of justice, prosecutor said
By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER
When Sheree Ann Shaw failed to appear at a June 7 court appearance in Illinois, the Twin Lakes woman accused in a fatal crash became a fugitive of justice, according to a McHenry County prosecutor. Shaw’s run ended when the U.S. Marshals service arrested her in Las Vegas June 22, courtesy of a local tip to Twin Lakes law enforcement. “Ms. Shaw was arrested in Las Vegas (June 22) and is in custody,” McHenry County Assistant State’s Attorney Michael Combs said. “The state’s attorney’s office will extradite her to Illinois for prosecution.” Shaw, 45, allegedly was under the influence of heroin when she crashed her Ford
Taurus into a Harley Davidson Road Glide, operated by Amy Thornton and her husband on North Richmond Road May 6. Initially, Shaw faced a charge of driving without a valid license, but when Thornton died of injuries suffered in the wreck May 15, prosecutors added the felony charge of aggravated driving under the influence causing death on May 20.
Marshals involvement in her May 26 arrest in Twin Lakes. Combs declined to comment on the Walworth County decision in a phone interview June 24. After more than two weeks of searching for Shaw, the trail turned cold, until a Twin Lakes
Sister Hazel at Blarney Island Platinum-selling group, Sister Hazel, will be performing at 7 p.m. on Friday, July 1 at Blarney Island, 27843 W. Grass Lake Road in Antioch, kicking off the big holiday weekend. The show will debut some of the brand-new Sister Hazel songs like “Kiss Me Without Whiskey” as well as popular

Left: Logan Jozefiak, 12 (from left) shows his midseason form as he collects flying flapjacks flipped by firefighters Evan Locklear, his father, Shannon Locklear, and Logan’s grandfather, Ted Jozefiak, at the Antioch Firefighters Association annual pancake breakfast on Sunday. Above: Jaclyn Bartell assists her son, future firefighter Dylan Moehrke, 2, as he anxiously tries to knock down wooden blocks representing flames at the pancake breakfast. Thousands of pancakes and sausages were served to area residents during the gathering’s five hours of operation. In addition to the food, there were games for children and area residents had the opportunity to inspect a number of different firefighting vehicles, both old and new. The pancake breakfast serves as the main fundraiser for the Firefighters Association, with proceeds going toward the purchase of equipment and fire safety materials.

ly enjoy being able to travel through the Chain and into the Fox River. Since boating horsepower is unrestricted here it is a favorite spot for high-powered boats. For fishing and swimming the smaller lakes are favorites where there is less boat turbulence. Whatever your favorite outdoor activity, plan a visit to the Chain O’Lakes and enjoy this unique area.

tenance of the water and the management of the boat traffic. Not an easy job as the Chain O’ Lakes has more boat usage per acre than any other inland waterway in the United States. Of the 15 lakes, 10 are connected by the Fox River. These are Lake Catherine, Nippersink Lake, Lake Marie, Grass Lake, Bluff Lake, Fox Lake, Pistakee Lake, Channel Lake, Petite Lake, and Redhead Lake. The other 5 lakes are Duck Lake, Long Lake, Spring Lake, Dunns Lake, and Brandenburg Lake. These last five are connected to the chain, not by the Fox River, but by small canals and channels. Navigation of the Chain O’Lakes from Lake Catherine all the way down to Pistakee Lake is a favorite summertime boat trip for many recreational boaters. The area was once the home of the local semi-nomadic Indian tribes. French trappers and traders including fur trader Louis Joliet and Father Jacques Marquette were said to have explored the area in the mid 17th century although no lasting settlements were recorded. The area, which is roughly equidistant from Milwaukee and Chicago, did not quickly become the home of European settlements due to the difficulty in traveling to the area. With the railroad making its way first to McHenry then to Fox Lake, visitors to the area became more plentiful and the beginning of the area as a recreational destination began. The lakes offered a variety of different activities as each lake is different. The two largest lakes, Fox Lake and Pistakee Lake at about 1,700 acres each provide space for open boating and fishing. Originally Pistakee was a shallow lake full of marshes and waterfowl, a great place for hunting. The creation of the dam in McHenry, increased the depth of the lake. Fox and Pistakee were known for boating and in the 1900s especially for sail boat races. With Yacht clubs on each of these lakes the sight of sailboats was a constant. Grass Lake the next largest lake is estimated to cover 1360 acres, but was considered the shallowest of the lakes with an average depth of 3 feet, according to the Fox Lake Waterways. Grass Lake is best noted for its visitors in the early 1900s who came to see the Lotus beds. While the beds are no longer plentiful, they are beginning to reappear. Growth of resorts along the lakefronts increased dramatically with the arrival of the Milwaukee Road railroad to the area in 1901. The railroad crossed the lakes between Pistakee Lake and Nippersink Lake where Route 12 now

Delavan man hit by Independence Day blast in 2006

Beginnings
Hubbard, 37, of Delavan, grew up in Darien where he lived until his late teens. He attended Delavan-Darien and Williams Bay high schools and the Alternative High School in Elkhorn but didn’t graduate when he was 18 years old. He obtained his general education development, or high school equivalency, diploma when he was 21, and joined the military at 23, serving in the Wisconsin National Guard out of the Whitewater armory. In Hubbard’s first weekend in the Guard, during a pre-basic training tutorial, he tore his rotator cuff and was put on medical leave for a year. “Too many push-ups, I guess,” he said. After basic training, Hubbard had been back in Delavan for a month or two when he got a deployment letter saying his company was going to Saudi Arabia to guard a rest-andrelaxation camp where soldiers go for reprieve from battle. On the battery’s flight to Kuwait, its orders got suspended, so the unit showed up in theater in November
“I volunteered to take any guys’ shifts I could to give them a break,” he said, “I was still happy because I knew I was going home.”
Independence Day
July 4, 2006, was no different. Hubbard’s company was required to supply a man to guard a gate at a facility, the function of which News from home Hubbard said he can’t disclose. aymond Hubbard considers the day he nearly died – or died and was revived as the case might be – to be one of miracles. A pessimist might say the opposite. Hubbard wasn’t even supposed to be there that day in Iraq when insurgents detonated a bomb that riddled him with holes, blew his leg off below the knee and left him with a traumatic brain injury. He volunteered. The mission that sent his company to the Middle East to begin with had been suspended. The reason he was there was a formality – he’d been granted a “compassionate reassignment” to Whitewater and was required to return to the Middle East to travel with his military-issued weapons. But Hubbard sees miracles – a double supply of donated blood on hand at two locations, without which he wouldn’t have survived; a newly built shanty to house military guards that might have somewhat shielded the blast; and the happenstance that other military personnel typically in the area at that time weren’t there on the day of the explosion. That day was July 4, 2006. Monday will mark 10 years since the day of what some would call a tragedy. Hubbard and his military colleagues call it his “survival anniversary.”
Wedig • STAFF WRITER 2005 without a mission, Hubbard said. The group stayed in Kuwait until January 2006 when it was tasked with accompanying special forces in Iraq as an attachment company. “That was a lot of weight to put on National Guard soldiers, but we did what we were asked to do,” Hubbard said.
but is now the site of the Department of Homeland Security. His mom, stepdad and then-wife were there. Hubbard couldn’t talk or move his right side (blood clots had caused a stroke), he didn’t remember what had happened, what mission he was on or his kids’ names, he said. He was told he had died and been brought back multiple times. He looked down at his bed and noticed the lack of shape under the covers below his left knee. He gave his wife an inquisitive look, and she told him his leg was gone. Hubbard said he merely shrugged, taking the amputation in stride. Hubbard learned he’d been in hospitals in Balad, Iraq, and Germany and flown back to the United States on a C-130 – essentially a mobile hospital, four or five days after the explosion. And, he learned why he was alive.
Resupply day
On the top of a hill that overlooked the area where the explosion occurred was a command center where a medical truck was stationed, Hubbard said. On that day, the truck was scheduled to resupply its donated blood – dispose of old blood and replace it with new blood, he said. That, he said, was another miracle. The old blood had not yet been disposed of, but the new blood was on hand in the truck and at the Diplomatic Hospital of Baghdad International Airport where Hubbard was taken – two double supplies, all of which Hubbard needed. “I used all the blood on the medical truck and at the hospital,” he said. Hubbard’s left leg suffered what is known as “traumatic amputation” – it was blown off below the knee. On his right leg, 90 percent of his calf muscle was obliterated, but the leg was in tact, and doctors were able to save it. A tuning-fork-shaped laceration to Hubbard’s upper left
thigh required 120 stitches to close, five holes the size of baseballs were blasted in the left side of his torso, and his left arm had an open wound. His elbow and his head hit a concrete wall that the gate he was guarding was on. Hubbard said he was fortunate that shrapnel that tore open his torso in front – leaving a scar the length of his midriff – went in sideways, sparing his internal organs. Both femoral arteries and his carotid artery were severed. One doctor at the facility was tasked with keeping his hand in Hubbard’s neck to stop the blood flow from the carotid artery, Hubbard said. He had no pulse, and the doctor made Hubbard keep talking to gauge whether he was alive, he said. Hubbard recalls the most painful part of his ordeal was the treatment of the open wounds in his torso. Because flesh was missing, the wounds couldn’t be closed but had to be allowed to heal and treated with wetdry dressings. Even though he was heavily medicated, he said, he would scream in pain when the dressings were changed. Traumatic brain injury resulted from his head hitting the wall and blood rushing so quickly from his brain, he said.
10 years later
Today, Hubbard is three years clean from opiates – painkillers he became addicted to after his injuries. To combat depression and posttraumatic stress disorder, he does yoga and keeps the company of his service dog – the second in the nation to be issued through Canines for Combat Veterans. He helps at the Veteran’s Administration Hospital in Milwaukee and is applying for grants to travel to different cities and offer companionship to other wounded veterans. “Find guys who are hurting (and) do one-on-one stuff that gets brushed aside a lot,” he said.
