Area’s history springs to life at museum Former schoolhouse is home to Lakes Region Historical Society By Sandra Laden Machaj CORRESPONDENT

JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter

A visit from the general

General Ulysses S. Grant, a.k.a. actor/impersonator Wayne Issleb, recounts his memorable life for a full house at The Meeting House, 977 Main St., in Antioch, on Sunday. The Lakes Region Historical Society sponsored “An Afternoon With General Ulysses S. Grant” with the hope of raising funds in order to get The Meeting House, Antioch’s oldest extant structure (1863), a needed fresh coat of paint. Issleb, as Grant in full military uniform, entertained the audience with stories of his youth, his education at West Point and subsequent rise through the military ranks to be appointed commander of all Union armies by Abraham Lincoln. After a brief intermission, Issleb returned in period clothing as an aging President Grant (pictured above) and took the audience through his election as the youngest president of the United States up to that time, and through his sometimes scandal-plagued two terms in office, his retirement, and death three days after finishing his autobiography.

The building at 965 Main Street in downtown Antioch began its life in 1892 as a four-room schoolhouse, built to educate the children of Antioch. In 1915 two major changes occurred, one to bring the school building into the 20th century, and the other to bring new education opportunities to the students. Indoor plumbing was installed and high school classes were added. The classes added were only for the first two years of high school. “After two years, if the students wished to continue with high school, they had to go to Waukegan, quite a distance,” said Ainsley Wonderling, a volunteer at the Lakes Region Historical Society. A new school was built adjacent to this building. By 1971 all classes except for band were moved to the new space. The band schedule can still be seen posted on the wall on the second floor in the room that has been preserved as a classroom. The Lakes Region Histori-

cal Society was formed in the early 1970s with the first official meeting being held at the Antioch Township Library on Aug. 16, 1973. According to Wonderling, interest in a historical society was placed on the back burner as plans for the bicentennial celebration of the nation became the focus of attention. Meanwhile, the 1892 school building, no longer used for classes, was boarded up, the interior painted green and it became a storage building.

A call to action Early members of the Historical Society were concerned that the history of both Antioch and the Chain O’ Lakes was becoming lost as families moved and people died or just plain cleaned out years of accumulation. They realized that the time was now if they were going to preserve these items from long ago. They began to collect items relating to the history of Antioch and the Chain O’ Lakes area. Area to host ‘mud runs’

Beginning next weekend, the Richmond-Spring Grove area will host a pair of “mud runs,” which are competitive fitness events in which participants are challenged by a series of obstacles over a mud-soaked course. Here are four of the area obstacle course runs this summer that have turned mud, sweat and tears into something many competitors look forward to: • June 11-12 – Spartan Race, Richmond, Ill. – Spartan Races are timed competitions that include natural and manmade obstacles specifically designed to test mind and body fitness. With three different races at varying distances, Spartan Races have an option for any fitness level. Each version of the race will have competitors climbing, lifting, crawling, rolling, swimming and balancing their way to the end. With the motto “You’ll Know at the Finish Line,” Spartan Races bond athletes through the collective challenge of completing a mud run. • July 23 – Dirt Runner, Marseilles, Ill. – This four-mile night race starts at dusk, so bring a headlamp. Armed with glow sticks along the trail, those who are brave enough to take on the Dirt Runner will encounter more than 1,200-feet of total elevation change, a trail that runs through ravines and a relentless series of short steep hills. With over 30 permanent obstacles to race throughout the course, the Dirt Runner is no easy feat. • July 30 – Savage Race, Spring Grove, Ill. – The Savage Race prides itself on featuring the most obstacles per mile, with 25 obstacles over the course of an intense 6-7-mile run. Participants will find their inner barbarian while powering through a course filled with freezing cold ice baths, rows of fire and plenty of mud. Run alone or grab some friends and create a team to power through this race. • Aug. 6 – Dirty Girl Mud Run, Ottawa, Ill. – Filled with laughter, excitement and tons of mud, the Dirty Girl Mud Run is perfect for women of all ages who are looking for a day of fun and muddy exercise. Not a ‘race’ in the traditional sense, the Dirty Girl Mud Run is designed to encourage women to go beyond their comfort zones and form teams to help everyone make it to the finish line. I’ve read a few of your columns but my situation is probably different than most.” I told her, “Every situation is different. The only commonality is that everyone I visit is need of some kind of financial assistance, whether it is with rent or utilities, food or in your case dental surgery.” The woman looked surprised that I knew exactly what she needed help with. She said, “I was wondering how you knew about this terrible pain I am in. I remember when I saw my neighbor in the laundry room last week I was crying and she was very concerned. I did not want my grandmother seeing the pain I was in, so I went to do laundry down the hall.” I asked the woman if she had a budget and any other substantiating documents such as bank statements, bills, etc. The woman went to the kitchen cabinet and grabbed a box of documents. She set them on the table in front of me excusing herself, and rushing to the other room as she said, “Here is everything. You are welcome to look through them.” I was a little confused about her quick departure but began to go through her documents, making notes. I saw in her

bank statements the amounts being deposited for their assistance. I also saw the payments for rent, utilities and some medical bills. The woman came back shortly and apologized for her quick departure. I could see she was embarrassed but did not want to question her. Instead I questioned her about several of the bills and expenses. The woman shared the surgery she had endured and her disabilities. I also asked about her dental problems as this was the main reason I had come to visit. I had noticed her flinching in pain several times during my visit. The woman told me she had not seen a dentist in years, as it was a luxury and not something she could ever afford. The woman told me how she had not been able to eat properly for the past month, as the pain seemed to grow daily. “It’s getting very hard to hide it from my grandmother, but I do not want to distress her. She would just worry about me.” I made a call to one of our wonderful dentists to have her seen as soon as possible. While the woman was very grateful for the dentist appointment, I could tell the woman wanted to tell me something else but may be having difficulty saying it. I asked her, “Is there something else you want to tell me?” Her face got red and she looked down as she said, “Because of my surgery I have become incontinent. I have to wear an adult diaper all the time. I am embarrassed to go out in public because I never know when it will happen, like it just did when you first got here. That is why I had to run to the bathroom.” I reassured the woman she had nothing to be embarrassed about, “You certainly are not the first person we have provided assistance to that has incontinence. We have helped people of all ages that struggle with your condition.” The woman looked relieved to have told me the full extent of her condition. I asked about the grandmother and what care she provided. The granddaughter told me she provided all care for her grandmother including managing her diabetes, bathing and incontinence care. The granddaughter said, “I love my grandmother with all my heart. She raised me

Dear W.C., My neighbors who live in our apartment building need your help. There is a woman in her 30s who cares for her elderly grandmother. The woman had an operation several years ago that left her incontinent. She also has other physical challenges that make it impossible for her to work. She lives with and cares for her 81-year-old grandmother. I have observed how lovingly she cares for her grandmother and how they both struggle. I found my neighbor crying yesterday because she is in so much pain because of needing dental surgery. They just do not have the money for something so expensive. They live very frugally. It would be wonderful if The Time Is Now to Help could help this woman with the constant pain she is enduring. Thank you.

when my mother died when I was 6 years old. She is all I have for family. We have always done everything together. Now that she needs to be taken care of, I am not going to leave her on her own. She needs me now just like I needed her when I was a kid.” I asked about their food and toiletries. The woman shared their need for laundry detergent, wipes, body wash, toothpaste and shampoo. “There are months we just run a little short due to medical bills or other needs that come first. I do so much laundry, and detergent is so expensive.” I asked to see the apartment. The woman gave me a quick tour of the small two-bedroom apartment. I noticed the sagging old beds and tattered bedding. When the woman saw me looking at the sorry-looking beds she again flushed in embarrassment. She explained, “Our bedding gets so worn out from the constant washing I have to do.” I asked about their uncomfortable-looking beds and the woman told me how badly both she and her grandmother’s backs hurt most days. She confessed they had these same mattresses since she was a child when she grew up with her grandmother. I knew this woman and her grandmother would need new mattresses and bedding in addition to the dentist and toiletries. After a thorough review of their budget and expenses, I could see they could get by if we paid their rent one month ahead and provided the dental treatment, mattresses, toiletries and bedding. Just about the time we were finalizing our visit the neighbor walked over to speak to us. She said to the woman, “I hope The Time Is Now to Help was able to help you with your pain you’ve been suffering. I have been so upset ever since I saw you crying in the laundry room. I just couldn’t let you go through this alone.” The woman hugged her neighbor and began to cry. “You are the best neighbor anyone could ask you. Thank you for writing to ask for help for me. You and The Time Is Now to Help are godsends.” They both hugged each other for a few minutes before the neighbor said her goodbyes. Once the neighbor left, I went to speak to the grandmother before saying my own goodbyes. The woman said, “Grandma, this wonderful man said he is going to bring you a new bed, sheets and blankets. What do you think about that?” The grandmother got a big smile on her face and answered, “A new bed? I’ve never had a new bed in my whole life. And new blankets? It will be like a dream to sleep like that. Am I dreaming?” I reassured the grandmother she was not dreaming. I told both of the women about how all of you make many dreams come true for our fellow creations suffering in poverty. They both were filled with gratitude and appreciation for all the fulfilled dreams you make possible. Several weeks later, the woman is halfway through

IF YOU FIND SOMETHING YOU FALL IN LOVE WITH, ASK FOR HELP.”

– Olympic hopeful Emily McClellan

mily McClellan has had plenty of dreams come true. First, a state title as a high-school swimmer at Delavan-Darien (Wis.) High School. Then, multiple All-American awards as a swimmer at the University of Wisconsin–Milwaukee, including a runner-up finish in the 100 breaststroke as a senior in 2014. Olympic Trials competitor? She can check that off too, finishing sixth in the 100-meter breaststroke in 2012, though only two swimmers from the country qualify in each event. Now, with another Olympics approaching, McClellan recently spoke with students at the Wisconsin School for the Deaf in Delavan, Wis., about setting and achieving goals. “If you find something you fall in love with, ask for help,” McClellan told students at WSD on May 24. McClellan fell in love with swimming at an early age and set and achieved the goal of winning a state championship with the encouragement of her high school swim coach who believed in her abilities, she said. The 2014 UW-Milwaukee graduate

now has her sights set an another goal – qualifying for the 2016 summer Olympics. McClellan tried for the Olympics four years ago, finishing sixth in her best event. Simply qualifying is an achievement in and of itself. More than 150 swimmers qualified in the 100 breaststroke at the 2012 Olympic Trials. The top 16 swimmers in preliminaries go to the semifinals, with the top eight making the cut for the finals. The top two become Olympians.

CONNECTIONS

McClellan talked to students about her connections to the Wisconsin School for the Deaf. Both her maternal grandparents, Leonard and Ruth Peacock, are deaf and attended school and worked at Wisconsin School for the Deaf. McClellan’s mother, June, is the oldest of Leonard and Ruth Peacock’s four children. The Peacocks’ kids had seven children, three of whom are hearing, two of whom are deaf and two of whom are hard of hearing. McClellan said she was born deaf in her left ear and grew up learning to

sign. She said June McClellan taught her and her sister to swim in a pool in their backyard when she was about six months old. June McClellan was a coach of the Delavan Dolphins, a community swim team, and believed strongly in teaching her kids to swim, Emily McClellan said. In high school, McClellan was a three-sport athlete, swimming in the fall, playing basketball in the winter and softball in the spring. She said her high school coach was confident in her swimming ability and told her to set her goal at winning state. She initially thought the goal was unattainable, but McClellan then qualified to state as a sophomore. Though she didn’t place at state that year – she finished 16th in the 200-yard individual medley and 13th in the 100 breaststroke – McClellan kept working toward her goal. Her junior year, she again made it to state, and, and this time, earned a spot on the podium. She placed fourth in the 200 individual medley and fifth in the 100 breaststroke. McClellan kept striving to improve, and, in her final appearance at state as a senior, finished first in the 100 breaststroke.

“My senior year, I had done it,” McClellan said. “It was the first time I’d set a goal and achieved it. That feeling was incredible.”

ON TO COLLEGE

After winning state, McClellan competed at nationals and colleges began to recruit her, she said. McClellan chose UW-Milwaukee where she balanced a college course load with 20 hours of swim training. Her freshman year, she qualified for the National Collegiate Athletic Association national meet but finished last. By her senior year, she placed second at NCAAs, and her time was the third fastest in the history. In 2012, McClellan went to the Olympic trials. While she didn’t make the team, qualified for the 2013 World University Games in Kazan, Russia, where she and her teammates won a bronze medal in the 400-meter medley relay. She graduated from UW-Milwaukee in 2014 with a major in American Sign Language studies. McClellan continues to train and will try out for the 2016 summer Olympics. She encouraged WSD students to set goals and chase their dreams.

It soon became apparent that all the collected historical memorabilia required a home and the 1892 Schoolhouse used by Antioch School District No. 34 as a storage unit would be the perfect home for the museum. After contacting the district administration, an arrangement was made that would allow the museum to rent the building at a nominal fee. Turning the building from a storage facility into a museum required many volunteer hours and backbreaking work as they removed the green paint and began repairing and often reconstructing the building room by room, according to Wonderling. “It was not an easy job. Old time lath and plaster walls had to be replaced with wallboard,” she said. The museum opened on a small scale. First in 1981 they served punch and cookies at the Fourth of July parade. Family killed in rural Wisconsin crash

Judge steps away from Twin Lakes beating trial Move due to conflict of interest, prosecutor says

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

The trial of a Twin Lakes, Wis., man accused of a Christmas morning beating has been put on hold, after a Kenosha County (Wis.) Circuit Court judge stepped away, citing conflict of interest according to Assistant District Andrew Burgoyne. Alexander Garcia, 25, was bound over for trial on charges of felony aggravated battery with intent to cause great bodily harm on allegations he beat 58-year-old Thomas Eppers Sr. In Friday’s final pretrial hearing, Circuit Court Judge Mary Kay Wagner excused herself from the case after realizing she could be related to the victim, Burgoyne said. “Judge Wagner recused herself from the case and concluded it was in the best interest of the parties,” Burgoyne said. “I think it was the right thing for her to do.” Garcia, who remains in jail, was intoxicated when he allegedly struck Eppers with a bat, according to a criminal complaint. The complaint contends that Garcia repeatedly beat Eppers in the head and torso, which rendered him unresponsive by the time officers arrived.

Discover the

The complaint contends that Garcia said he did not “remember whether there had been an altercation, and that is what happens when people drink.” Twin Lakes Rescue transported Eppers to Aurora Memorial Hospital in Burlington, where Flight Alexander for Life helicopter airliftGarcia ed him to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa. Garcia, who was staying at the residence with Eppers’ daughter, Abigail, had a previous altercation with Eppers, the complaint alleges. In a January preliminary hearing, officers testified that the altercation took place in La Crosse, where Garcia was allegedly rude to the family. Eppers Sr. responded, with claims he threw Garcia into a nearby body of water. While there have been no updates on Eppers’ status within the last two months, he most recently was able to walk, according to the Caringbridge website set up by his family. If convicted, Garcia faces maximum imprisonment of 15 years.

but was taken by Flight for Life to an area trauma center with critical injuries. Preliminary investigation revealed that a fully loaded semi-truck and trailer was northbound on Highway K approaching the intersection with Townhall Road, according to the department. The semi had the right of way as there is no stop sign for traffic on Highway K at that intersection. Both occupants of the semi – the driver, Jerry Morris, 52, of Elkhorn, and a passenger, Kevin Grethe, 46, of Sparta – survived but were taken to area trauma centers with multiple injuries, according to a press release. The semi collided with the passenger side of the pick-up in a “t-bone” manner. A third vehicle, which was a 2006 GMC Envoy, was southbound on Highway

K and was also involved in the crash. The driver Carol Terry, 67, of Rockford, died. The passenger, her husband, Mark Terry, 68, of Rockford, was in critical condition last week at an area trauma center, according to the sheriff’s department. The Walworth County Sheriff’s Office Crash Investigation Unit and the Walworth County Medical Examiner’s Office continue to investigate the incident. Three members of Delavan family that occupied the pickup truck died – Carlos Venegas, 26, his wife, Maria, 28, and their 2-year-old son, Carlos Jr. The Venegas’ daughter, Giselle, 6, survived the crash

Sheriff implicates boyfriend in explosion deaths By Jennifer Eisenbart STAFF WRITER

In shadows created by burnt trees and low cloud cover June 2, Tamara Burgos and friends and family were gathering plants and flowers from amid the charred rubble of the family home at 29235 Ketterhagen Rd., in Burlington, Wis. Burgos said her family plans to transplant those, which were originally planted by her mother, Kimberly Howe, at the home – which was leveled by a fire and explosion on May 14. It is all Burgos has left of Howe, her biological mother. She said that the fire investigation team identified her mother from a small tissue sample. “If it’s my mother, give me something to bury,” Burgos said. The Racine County Sheriff’s Department announced Wednesday that it believes Howe, her son, Nicholas Chaulkin, and her boyfriend, Craig Lambert, had perished May 14, in a murder-suicide perpetrated by Lambert. Those events culminated in a spectacular fire and explosion that reduced the home to splinters. According to a news re-

Daughter has difficult time accepting conclusion

lease issued by the Sheriff’s Office, a medical examination showed that Chaulkin had suffered a gunshot wound to the back of his head, and was dead before the fire because there was no evidence of smoke in his lungs. “…Autopsy results did reveal the presence of smoke in Craig Lambert’s lungs, which is consistent with him being alive after the fire began,” the release states. The bodies of Lambert and Chaulkin were found the day after the explosion, and identified through dental and DNA records. After a week of searching by investigators, other human remains collected from the site were later identified as Howe. “The injuries sustained by Lambert and Howe in the fire were so severe that the Medical Examiners Office was unable to determine the exact manner of death,” the release states. While the exact cause of the fire could not be determined due to the level of destruction, the release states “…evidence at the scene indicated the intentional removal of an LP gas line in the basement allowing the home to fill will gas and ex-

plode upon introduction to an ignition source.” “The sad and unfortunately reality is Kimberly Howe and her son are both victims of the ultimate act of domestic violence,” Racine County Sheriff Christopher Schmaling wrote in a text correspondence Wednesday. The Women’s Resource Center of Racine was scheduled to hold a vigil Thursday night at 5:30 p.m. at Echo Park in Burlington, with special activities planned for teens. Difficult for daughter Burgos absorbed what the Sheriff’s Department released Wednesday – and came to a far different conclusion. “They never found her teeth,” Burgos said of Howe. “They never found the jewelry on her body. “The second body that they’re claiming is my brother? They even stated to the family that the DNA did not match,” she added. “It can’t be my brother if the DNA doesn’t match.” However, Schmaling said his department reacted properly according to the evidence, as did the Wisconsin Crime Lab.

“These are human remains that were found,” the sheriff said. “Those are our three victims, and there’s no disputing that. “The extent and the scope of the search was massive,” he added. Burgos claimed there were clues that her mother and her brother didn’t return to the house following a domestic incident days prior to the fire and explosion. She said that Lambert loved her mother deeply, and would have been incapable of killing her mother, much less reducing her remains to the point where investigators only found a small tissue sample. But she also said that Lambert had confronted Howe about another man kissing her on May 11. The fight turned physical, Burgos explained, and her mother and brother left the house the morning of May 12. Burgos said she spoke to her mother via text message the day before the fire, and felt her mother was nervous about returning to the home. That, she said, would have kept Kimberly Howe from returning without someone to protect her. Lambert’s daughter, Kay-

Body found along Lily Lake shoreline By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

A man found dead along the Lily Lake, Wis., shoreline May 28 was involved in an earlier domestic dispute that required the Sheriff’s Tactical Team. According to Sgt. Daniel Ruth of the Kenosha County (Wis.) Sheriff’s Department, Richard L. Warnke Sr. became distraught after the May 23 domestic dispute with his wife at a residence in the 7800 block of 336th Ave. Wheatland, Wis., and later turned up missing. “He had been involved in a domestic dispute with his wife earlier in the night and had been seen with a gun by his wife and neighbor,” Ruth stated. “He fled the scene prior to the Sheriff’s Department’s arrival in an unknown direction, apparently despondent over domestic issues.” Ruth reported the Kenosha Sheriff’s Department Tactical Team canvassed the area from 8 p.m. to 1:30 a.m. When Warnke Sr. failed

Department press release, a local resident discovered his body along the shoreline of Lily Lake near the 7700 block of 334th Avenue early Saturday afternoon. Authorities were unable

to positively identify Warnke Sr. until Tuesday when a medical examiner’s autopsy confirmed his identity. Ruth stated Warnke had been “missing for about five days total.”

Sequoit Sidekick member John Kasbohn, 16, passes the Flame of Hope torch to his running mate, Antioch police officer Zack “Z” Johnson at the beginning of Leg 6A of The Law Enforcement Torch Run at Main Street and Highway 173 in Antioch on Sunday. Beginning at 6 a.m., the Sequoit Sidekicks and Antioch police carried the torch to Highway 83 and Grass Lake Road where they handed it over to members of the Lake Villa police force who continued the run southward. The Torch Run is the single largest year-round fundraising event benefiting Special Olympics Illinois. Approximately 3,000 officers representing every branch of law enforcement across the state from local police officers to FBI agents will carry the Flame of Hope nearly 1,500 miles, running through thousands of Illinois communities to its final destination, the Opening Ceremony of the Special Olympics Illinois Summer Games later in June in Normal, Illinois.
