While the area is perhaps best know for its lakes, the large amount of land that has been retained for outdoor recreational activities also draws vacationers. One of these areas is the Chain O’ Lakes State Park which is bordered by Wilmot Road and Highway 173 between Antioch and Richmond. In 1946 the State of Illinois purchased 840 acres of undeveloped land to form the Chain O’ Lakes State Park. The land was adjacent to the original Chain O’ Lakes Conservation Camp which became the Chain O’ Lakes Conservation Area in 1930. This land was incorporated into the state park in 1957. Further growth occurred in 1969 when the Department of Conservation purchased the Stevens Farm. The Stevens family had a history of ownership dating back to 1843 when it was received by the family under a land grant. Today the state park, which borders three lakes of the Chain O’ Lakes – Lake Marie, Nippersink Lake, Grass Lake – and the Fox River consists of 2,793 acres with an adjoining 3,230 acre conservation area. In addition there is a 44-acre lake within the park’s boundaries. This park offers a wide variety of outdoor activities. From the open lands to the canopies formed by the trees, the beauty of nature comes to the forefront during a drive along the park’s picturesque, winding roads. A favorite park activity is camping. Camping at Chain O’ Lakes can be as rustic or as high-end as one wishes. The park provides a Class A campground with 150 sites. This area includes flush toilets, electricity and shower facilities. For the more adventurous there are 3 Class B campgrounds with an additional 87 sites, which have fewer amenities. The park also offers Rent a Camp units which provide a tent or cabin and the basics to get novice campers through their first experience. Even for those who are not interested in sleeping in the park, there are many daytime activities. Bring a boat and launch it here to enjoy a ride down the Fox River or into the Chain O’ Lakes. The trails are lined with a variety of trees including oak, hickory, cherry, birch, sumac and spruce. While bicycle riding is allowed on the trail, riders are cautioned to be wary of hikers. Visitors will also likely encounter wildlife, from nesting birds in the native prairies to a variety of woodland animals including deer, rabbits, ground squirrels, chipmunks, mink. More than 200 species of birds have been identified in the park. Visitors are invited to pick up a checklist in the office to tally how many can be discovered. “Oliver!” set for threeweek run at PM&L

“Oliver!,” a family-friendly musical about a roving band of orphans and their crooked leader opens its three-weekend run in Antioch on July 22. Mosquitoes test positive for West Nile virus in county A batch of mosquitoes sampled June 23 in Highland Park tested positive for West Nile virus, according to Lake County health officials. The mosquito pool is the first confirmed indicator of the disease’s presence in the county in 2016. In 2015, five human cases of West Nile virus were reported in Lake County. In addition, 68 batches of mosquitoes and one bird tested positive for the virus. “This is the time of year when we begin to see mosquito pools testing positive for West Nile virus,” said Mark Pfister, the Health Department’s interim executive director. “Now that hot summer weather is finally here, it is especially important to protect yourself against mosquito bites by following the four D’s – Drain: regularly empty water from outdoor containers; Dress: cover skin by wearing long sleeved shirts and pants; Dawn and Dusk: stay indoors during early evening and morning hours; and

Defend: use insect repellent that contains DEET.” The Health Department maintains a West Nile virus hotline for county residents to report areas of stagnant water (which are conducive for mosquito breeding), or to obtain more information on the signs and symptoms of West Nile encephalitis. The West Nile hotline number is: (847) 377-8300. Information can also be found at: www.fightthebitenow.com. Recommendations to prevent mosquito breeding include: • Discard old tires, buckets, drums or any water holding containers. Poke holes in tires used as bumpers on docks; • Keep roof gutters and downspouts clear of debris; • Keep trash containers covered; • Empty plastic wading pools at least once a week and store indoors when not in use; • Drain unused swimming pools; • Fill in tree rot holes and hollow stumps that hold water;

• Change the water in bird baths and plant urns at least once a week; • Store boats upside down or drain rainwater weekly. Recommendations to prevent mosquito bites include: • Whenever possible, limit outdoor activity at dusk; • Wear light-colored clothing that minimizes exposed skin and provides some protection from mosquito bites; • Make sure door and window screens fit tightly and that all holes are repaired; • Apply insect repellent that includes DEET, picaridin,

The Health Department conducts a multi-faceted mosquito surveillance program in Lake County. Beginning in late spring and continuing into the autumn, a series of traps are set around the county, including within the Lake County Forest Preserves. At each site a pool, or batch, of mosquitoes is tested weekly for West Nile virus. Areas of stagnant water are also investigated throughout the season for the presence of mosquito larvae, specifically from the

Culex mosquito, which is the primary carrier of West Nile in Illinois. Finally, the locations of dead birds are monitored to assist in the assessment of potential West Nile virus activity. The Health Department works closely with the municipalities, townships, and the Lake County Forest Preserve District in monitoring the mosquitoes that may pose a public health threat. Additional information about WNV can be found on the department’s website at: www.fightthebitenow.com.

Antioch Parks and Recreation staffer Toni Galster, standing, right, takes a bag of items from Jesse Larsen, 7, that she collected in a scavenger hunt during the third annual Camping Under the Stars event held at Pedersen Park, 660 W. Highway 173, Antioch, on Saturday. The scavenger hunt was one of several children’s activities held at the campsite which also featured crafts, singing, storytelling, and meals. More than 20 tents of varying sizes were pitched as a part of this year’s adventure in mod-

ern-day roughing it, some equipped with amenities that would make a Davy Crockett or Daniel Boone green with envy. Families camped for two nights at the park pitching their tents Friday evening and breaking camp Sunday morning enjoying ideal weather the entire weekend. Accused bookkeeper set for hearing Blueberries will be here!! Woman allegedly stole from two Wisconsin school districts By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

A former bookkeeper who is accused of embezzling funds from two school districts is scheduled for a July 15 preliminary hearing in Kenosha County (Wis.) Circuit Court. Mary Anderson, 55, posted a $20,000 signature bond following a court appearance June 28. The bond is contingent on conditions, including no contact with personnel and students of Wheatland Center School and Salem Grade School, according to online circuit court records. Anderson faces two counts of theft of movable property, greater than $10,000 for allegedly taking money from both schools starting 2006, a criminal complaint stated. The complaint contends Anderson paid herself $17,000 while serving as a bookkeeper of Salem (Wis.) Grade School from 20062014, when she voluntarily resigned. “Near the end of her (term) as a bookkeeper for the school district, her supervisors discovered numerous financial irregularities in the payroll records, general ledger reports and disbursements, all of which were maintained by the defendant,” the complaint states. When Salem’s new business manager, Susan Jarvis, arrived in December 2013, becoming Anderson’s direct

supervisor, she discovered problems February 2014 when Anderson allegedly refused to do assigned work. “The defendant was refusing to perform her duties, her deposits were short and her check balances were wrong and not matching up,” according to the complaint. Nine months after Anderson’s departure, Salem Grade School retained forensic accounting firm Balanced Edge to investigate her performance, revealing that she allegedly paid herself $18.02 per hour, instead of $13.42 per hour from 2010-2014. Additionally, Anderson allegedly upgraded her hotel package while attending a conference at the Kalahari Resort in the Wisconsin Dells, where she is accused of making two unauthorized transactions costing the district an extra $80. Furthermore, Anderson, responsible for preparing deposits to the district’s bank accounts, had allegedly shorted two different banking institutions by more than $500. The forensic audit revealed Salem Grade School suffered a $17,000 loss. While Balanced Edge conducted its investigation, Anderson took a position at Wheatland (Wis.) Center School, where she was the Human Resource Finance Specialist. Through Anderson’s tenure at Wheatland, she allegedly used a district-issued credit card to make personal purchases, and when District Administrator Marty McGinley confronted her, Anderson claimed “that she mixed up the school credit card with her

own card.” The complaint states McGinley closely monitored the account, and discovered seven unauthorized transactions were made, totaling $1,043. Of the $1,043, Anderson allegedly spent $600 for vehicle repairs at Meineke Car Care. McGinley, again, confronted her following the seven unauthorized transactions in a tape-recorded conversation, where Anderson allegedly admitted making the purchases and forging his name. “She claimed that she had used the wrong card to make the purchases, even though the district card looks nothing like her personal credit cards,” the complaint explained. “She acknowledged that her behavior constituted stealing and was immediately terminated.” Following her termination, Wheatland conducted several audits, and discovered a total loss of $11,607, the complaint contends. According to the criminal complaint, evidence suggests Anderson had been under financial distress, citing several civil judgments the last six years and a bankruptcy filing. On two occasions, authorities met with Anderson at the Kenosha Public Safety Building to “discuss these matters.” Anderson reportedly became emotional, telling investigators she planned to sell her home to help repay her debts, and “wanted to cooperate to resolve these matters.” The complaint contends, however, that Anderson has since hired an attorney and has not cooperated further.

Daughter struggles with caring for her mother By

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

my mother needed to go to the dentist. I had to sign up for a payment plan for her dental visit and had to get her medications to even get her to the dentist. Our car is in need of tires and some repairs. It has all just become overwhelming so quickly. Dear readers, Just as this devoted daughter stated in her letter, we do not often talk about mental illness in our communities. With estimates of more than 13 million Americans having serious mental illnesses, it would be expected that some of the clients we bring our assistance to would suffer from this kind of illness. It can indeed be very disabling and limit a person’s capability to be employed and maintain shelter. I have also seen the effects of some of the medications that are used to help make our fellow creations’ lives more normal. For some they are a godsend. For others, they have a long list of side effects that can be almost more

disabling than the mental illness they are supposed to treat. This daughter and her mother were willing to share their experience of living in poverty while struggling with a mental disability with all of you. I called the daughter to arrange a time to visit. I know from past experience that an unexpected visitor could throw off a person that suffers from bipolar disorder or schizophrenia. This phone call would give the daughter time to prepare the mother for the stress my visit would no doubt bring. My goal for the visit was to remove some of the stress from their lives, not increase it. I drove up to the mobile home to find a very old trailer. I could see they had tried to make it look more cheerful by the addition of several flower pots and two old plastic chairs outside, but the need for some repairs couldn’t be hidden. I noticed the curtains on the window pulled aside and saw an older woman looking at me. When I waved, she looked away and closed the curtain. That gesture was enough to let me know my visit was not welcomed by both women. The daughter greeted me at the door, and, after I introduced myself and showed my identification, she invited me inside. The

mobile home was small and I stepped right into the kitchen area where the mother sat at a table next to the window. The daughter tried to introduce me but the mother looked away and refused to make eye contact. When the daughter asked if I would like to sit down the mother said, “Why is this man here? I don’t want him here.” The daughter began to apologize but I told her not to worry, I completely understood. The daughter said, “Most people don’t understand why she acts the way she does. I appreciate your understanding.” The mother got up and turned on the television in the adjoining living room, obviously not wanting to be part of our conversation. The daughter said, “Well at least she is not in a complete tailspin. She is mad you are here but not yelling at you or me, so that is good. You were right about me letting her know you were coming. It gave her time to try and accept it.” I told the daughter about the many visits I have made over the years to homes where one or more members of the family struggle with a mental illness. These years of experience have given me a chance to know what sometimes works and what sometimes does not. A surprise visit has never been

Dear W.C., My mother and I have lived together most of our life. She is now 74, and I am 55 years old. My mother has struggled with her mental health her whole life. It was not something someone talked about when she was young, and it seems like it still is a subject that is hard to bring up. I have heard people tell her to just snap out of it or to take a pill and you will be fine. After watching her daily struggle for as many years as I can remember, I can tell you it is not that easy. She was married very young as her parents did not understand her special needs. My father only stuck around until I was 4 years old and then he left. As far back as I can remember, I have been the only one to help calm my mother when she becomes agitated or loses her grip on reality. People do not understand why I can’t work. I used to work full-time, sometimes leaving her with caregivers. I would either come home to find my mother missing or arguing with her caregiver. Now I have to watch my mother around the clock, and she cannot be left alone. We have lived in our motor home for the past 18 years. It is in very poor condition. Our lot rent and utilities are overdue because

about the mother’s aversion to strangers. She then told me how she could do most of the repairs herself if she had the materials. I looked at her with surprise as she said, “Don’t look so shocked. I know how to fix almost anything. I have had to be self-sufficient my whole life. I have kept this old trailer going for years.” We put together a list of items from the home improvement store that would fix many of the repairs I noticed. When it was time for me to leave, I said goodbye to the mother. She still refused to look me in the eye but this time she did lift her hand to wave goodbye. The daughter said, “That was nice, Mom. Thank you for letting W.C. visit us today.” The mother looked just at the daughter and smiled. I saw what that smile meant to the daughter. I knew that acknowledgement of love was probably few and far between. As I prepared to leave, the daughter followed me outside. We looked at their older model car and, though it was old, I saw it would be a good car to repair and put new tires on. The daughter turned to me

and said, “I know you have a lot of people that read your column and donate. Please tell them thank you for helping us. If it wasn’t for all of them, we would definitely have become homeless. I also would like you to write a column about my Mom. It is hard for people to understand mental illness sometimes, and I think it would help if they heard it from you.” I promised her I would do both things. I share this gratitude for our life-changing assistance with all of you. The stress of poverty has been removed for these two fellow creations thanks to you. We have always been fine. Tell him not to touch my things.” I answered the mother, “Don’t worry I will not touch any of your things. I am just making sure you have enough food and toiletries.” As I quickly looked over their few belongings, I could see they lived quite frugally. They had some food but not any of it was fresh fruit or vegetables. I made a list of necessary food and other items as I made my way around the trailer. I noticed the row of prescription bottles that the daughter explained were for the mother. She said, “I do not like to give her all these medications because they make her so drowsy and she has so many other bad side effects. I only use them when she has to go somewhere, like the dentist, or if she is working up to an episode. Sometimes they can come on quickly and other times it may take a few days.” I asked the daughter if she was taking any medications at this time and she showed me the medications she took on a regular basis. She said, “These were prescribed by her psychiatrist years ago and they do seem to make a difference.” The daughter showed me the small room she and her mother shared. I noticed the two twin beds were the only things that fit in the room. The daughter explained, “I had to move my mother’s bed in here because due to her illness there are times she does not sleep. I need to be able to keep an eye on her when she is in her manic states because otherwise she could harm herself or wander off. I sleep very lightly during those times.” I asked if she needed any help, as I know the strain being a constant caregiver can be. The daughter said, “No. She is my mother and I do not mind caring for her. I have cared for her my whole life, and I am the only one she trusts. Every other caregiver I have tried does not know how to keep her calm and unstressed.” I asked if she would like help from a volunteer, but she declined. I understood her refusal as I had seen how her mother responded to me being there. I did tell her a volunteer would drop off some fresh food, household necessities and a variety of toiletries I had noted. I told her I would instruct the volunteer to leave the items at her door and not come inside. The daughter looked very relieved when I told her this saying, “I try very hard to keep my mom healthy. I usually make her a fruit and vegetable at each meal, but we have not been able to do that for the last few weeks. I can see the difference it has made in her behavior.” The daughter also told me she and her mother walk nearly every day the weather is decent as regular exercise helps her disposition as well. After reviewing her bills, checking account and expenses, I saw how the dentist payments overwhelmed their already very tight budget. I saw the overdue lot rent notices and utility bill late notices. I made a list of bills we would help these two women with. I also noted a few repairs on the trailer that needed to be completed. When I mentioned this to the daughter, she reminded me

Michelle and Izzy Meikes are both members of the Browns Lakes Aquaducks ballet line, which has won numerous awards over the years. Below: (left) Olivia Rzonca, 15, and her sister, Greta, are part of a family involved in the Twin Lakes Aquanuts.

More than just water skiing Area ski shows become second family for some

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

how skiing is a water sport where families are formed and strengthened, according to the Meikes of Burlington and the Rzonca crew in Twin Lakes. The sport – a competitive, fulllength show comprised of several elements that include a ballet/swivel line, pyramid building and jump skiing – started with the fathers of both local families. Alan Meike, who grew up on Lauderdale Lakes in Elkhorn, started with his hometown team, before taking his family – including wife, Michelle – to the Brown’s Lake Aquaducks the last three years. Pete Rzonca started with the Twin Lakes Aquanuts in 1982 and later met his wife, Nancy, on the team. Since then, both couples had three children of their own, with two participating on their respective teams. The two families mutually agreed show skiing draws them closer together, extending beyond their immediate relatives and creating lasting friendships. Additionally, show skiing closes the generation gap, giving all ages an opportunity to go shoulder-toshoulder to win competitions.

Where it all began

When Alan, now 49, was 7 years old, his family had a summer home on Lauderdale Lakes, where he

developed a passion for water sports. “I grew up on the lake and skied over there since I was seven,” said Alan, originally from Hoffman Estates, Ill. During his tenure with the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers, he reconnected with Michelle, who he knew earlier, and eventually married in 1994. “(Lauderdale) is where the love started,” Michelle said. Rzonca joined the Twin Lakes Aquanuts at the urging of his friends when he was 16 years old. He later was part of the group’s 1984 national championship. “I joined when they had tryouts in August of 1982, I was 16,” Pete said. “I just enjoy water skiing, had a lot of friends on the team as well, encouraging me to join. It was a really great motivator” A year later, he met his wife Nancy, who said she grew up watching the Aquanuts on Lilly Lake. In 1986, she joined the team, skiing for three years. Currently, Nancy is the alumni advisor for the Aquanuts, keeping the history alive for former members dating back to the 1970s.

Building a family About 20 years ago, the Meikes moved to Burlington for their jobs, but still commuted to Elkhorn to ski for Lauderdale Lakes. However, when their children, starting with 17-year-old Payton, expressed an interest in show skiing, the Meikes switched to the Aquaducks due to proximity.

“We took a year break from it, but got back into it. The kids wanted to get into a club that was closer,” said Alan, who also has 14-year-old Isabel that skis. The Meike’s third child, 11-yearold Alex, is still exploring the potential of joining the Aquaducks, according to Michelle. “Alex is younger, so he is tiptoeing around doing the junior team program,” Michelle said. “He loves to help the show, running speaker wires and everything else.” Pete and Nancy Rzonca began a family with the birth of 15-yearold Olivia, followed by non-skiing member Jake, 11, and 9-year-old Greta, who stands atop the pyramid. Like Alan Meike, Pete Rzonca took time off, but returned when his children wanted to hit the water for the Aquanuts. “All the kids learned to ski when they were young,” Nancy said. Greta filled a crucial need for the

Aquanuts, Nancy stated. “They needed smaller girls to build pyramids, so she started that a year and a half ago.”

Bolstering bonds When Pete returned to the Aquanuts, it gave his children an opportunity to view him differently, he stated. “For me, the kids get to see me in a different light, rather than just dad at home,” Pete said. “That draws us closer. We get to do pyramids together.” Olivia, also part of last season’s national champion Aquanuts, said it has drawn her closer to sister Greta. “It is just a lot of fun. We are always at practice and always all together and having a good time,” Olivia said. “Greta climbs on me and we have a really good time.” Added Nancy, “Olivia worked really hard so she can try out for the

team, and then Greta started pyramid building.” Meanwhile, for the Meikes, show skiing provides a quality opportunity traditional youth sports don’t allow. “It is something we can do together. It is a unique sport, where parents and kids can ski side-by-side and work together and learn new things,” Alan said. “The time we spend together is something other youth sports do not allow.” Additionally, working side by side has closed the generation gap, Michelle explained. “As our daughter Isabel was younger, Alan would do doubles with her, and now he skis side by side with his son,” Michelle said. “It is really neat that at certain points, the generation gap is not really noticeable.” While both families see the benefits in their household, time spent with other members have created a second family.

The Aquaducks perform their final pyramid.

“You spend a lot of time with each other, so a lot of times, you have your biological family, and then a lot of people in the show skiing community becomes your second family,” Michelle said. Nancy agreed, outlining the Aquanuts’ practice schedule. “We are at practice on Tuesday, a show Wednesday, and practice Thursday and a show Saturday,”

Nancy explained. While the families have enjoyed their seasons on the water, the offseason is a little different.

Season in transition While Pete admits the fall and winter are difficult, the Rzoncas substitute water skis with snow skis. “There is that emptiness, so I

think in September and October are pretty tough to transition into different sports,” Pete said. “We do snow skiing so that keeps us together.” In the off season, the Meikes look ahead to the next season, starting with Michelle, who designs the Aquaducks costumes. Entering the year, she was involved in the creation of 160

costumes and revamping 55 others, but acknowledged it takes a team to put it all together. “We actually have a cut-a-thon day, where there are about 20 other various younger girls and moms that come together and cut them all out,” Michelle said. “I think it takes about 8-1/2 hours to cut them out. We start that in January.”

Aquaducks celebrate four Aquanut Watershow Team decades on the water

The nationally ranked Browns Lake Aquaducks perform on Thursday nights at Fischer Park, 30400 Durand Ave., Burlington, until Labor Day. The Junior Show is at 5 p.m., which is followed by the Main Show at 6:30 p.m. Each show is about an hour long with a brief intermission halfway through. Performances are free. For more information, visit www.aquaducks. org. The ski team took second place at nationals last year with first place rankings in ballet and towboat driving. The Aquaducks have won nationals in 1999, 2000, 2013 and 2014. The ski team is celebrating its 40th anniversary this season and will have a special reunion show at 6 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 20. The Aquaducks began in 1976

when two water skiers decided they wanted to form a team. There have been about 400 members of the Aquaducks since its creation. The Brown’s Lake Aquaducks Junior Show program is known to be one of the best programs in the area for young skiiers, according to their website. Children as young as eight years can join the program, whether they know how to ski or not. With the lesson of how to water-ski, they learn team building skills, communication, and practice their talents to advance as a water skier. They are taught everything from showmanship to dancing, to putting up three-high pyramids. The Junior Show is about one hour in length with acts ranging from two-ski line, drop-a-ski line, pyramids, doubles, conventionals, ballet line and more.

Aquanut Water Shows was formed in 1972 by Gary Borowski, Karl Schuberth and Kent Yunker, opening its first season in 1973 on Edgewater Beach. The following year, the Twin Lakes Village Board approved the conversion of a swampy area next to Lance Park Beach, the future home of the Aquanuts. Facility improvements were noted throughout the 1980s including seating expansion and more lighting. However, three straight national titles from 1982-84 highlighted the decade, which included multiple top individual finishes. In the 1990s, they underwent several changes, that included a new jump ramp, a sign at the entrance of Lance Park, landscape upgrades, a new staging area. Throughout the 1990s, the team performed its first four-level pyramid in 1991. In honor of the 20th anniversary in 1992, the team invited several alums back for another ride along the lake. After several years, the Aquanuts snapped a 31-year skid in 2015 when they won the national title. Performances are held at 6 p.m. On Wednesdays and Saturdays at Lance Park, 55 Lance Drive, Twin Lakes. The team will not have a show July 23, because of the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Tournament in Wisconsin Rapids. For more on the Aquanuts, visit www.aquanutwatershows.com.

The LAS Water Ski Show Team, formerly known as the Lauderdale Aqua Skiers, was started in the 1950s when a group of young skiers decided they wanted to perform for neighbors and friends. In the beginning, the group performed a single, annual show in front of the Sterlingworth Motor Hotel on the Lauderdale Lakes chain in conjunction with Lauderdale Regatta Day. In the 1960s the team continued to grow, adding costumes and more acts, including a two-person high pyramid. With the invention of ski boats, the team bought it’s own boat in the 1980s and began competing in the Wisconsin State Show Ski Tournament. More than 60 years later, the non-profit organization continues to perform and compete, all while being an integral part of the community serving as an educational and charitable organization. The group holds numerous fundraisers throughout the year and even offers an adaptive water ski clinic for children with disabilities. While the team previously performed on Lauderdale Lakes, in 2015 the group worked with the City of Elkhorn to bring its shows to Elkhorn Lake in Elkhorn’s Babe Mann Park. While the team still performs on Lauderdale Lakes, practices and Saturday evening shows are now held on Elkhorn Lake. Performances are held at 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays on Elkhorn Lake in Babe Mann Park, 960 Proctor Dr., Elkhorn. The performances are free and open to the general public. The team will not have a show on Saturday, July 23, because of the Wisconsin State Water Ski Show Tournament, held at Lake Wazeecha. Slices of Life

The painful hobble of a thrill seeker I’ve been moving slowly during the last few days. My steps are labored, my movements deliberate. My muscles ache in places I never knew muscles existed. I am bruised. I am sore. I am on vacation. Lots of people think vacations are supposed to be relaxing. Actually, the term relaxing vacation is often an oxymoron because when you are shelling out big bucks at a resort or amusement park to make sure you and your family have a good time, you want to get your money’s worth. So what do you do? You overdo. You work muscles not in use since you tried out for the gymnastics team back in eighth grade. And then, your body pays for your indulgence and you ache. For me, this journey started on a Jet Ski.

You know, my family. like some people want to When my family visits an climb Mount Everest or ride amusement park, just about a gondola in Venice before everyone makes a beeline they die. Now I could say

I rode a Jet Ski. In some strange way, I thought it would serve as vindication, making me seem like less of a thrill-seeking wimp. My friend promised a slow, safe, risk-free ride. It would be as easy as falling out of bed, except I hoped there wouldn’t be any falling involved. I climbed on and held on – for dear life. She started out across the lake and did her best to avoid any waves or turbulence, but I soon realized that was practically impossible. The itsy, bitsy, teeny, tiny little watercraft bounced and jostled with every movement of the water beneath us. I thought we were dead for sure, or at least at risk of getting seriously wet. I held onto the Jet Ski handles like they’d never been held before, closed my eyes and waited for the end – of the

ride or my life, whichever came first. Our little excursion lasted forever, or at least the better part of 10 minutes. As we were heading for the shore, she turned and asked, “Want to go around once more?” I could only manage to squeak out a one-word answer, “Done!” Once we stopped, I had to consciously will myself to let go of the handles. They’d been stretched and mangled beyond their original shape, and even though they were made of rubber, it was unlikely that they’d ever spring back. The same could be said of about 90 percent of the muscles in my body. They’d been flexed and tightened to capacity throughout the duration of the ride, although I really wouldn’t know – or feel – it until about 24 hours later.

Which brings me to the here and now. I limp down to the beach, trying not to wince – at least not so anyone can see. For the moment, I am one of the Jet Skiing crowd. I’ve become a thrill-seeker, someone who lives life on the wild side. When you are vacationing on a lake, there’s a certain amount of status with that. Today, I walk with my head held high, and an air of caution-be-damned in my pain-laden hobble. For me this will go down as the summer I survived the Jet Ski. Been there. Done that. So glad it’s over.
