Retiring after 39 years on the highway Town commissioner retires; son tabbed to fill out term

Mark Ring will tell you that a highway commissioner is only as good as the crew that works with him.

And he is proud of his crew.

“We’re the biggest township system in Lake County, have the smallest number of employees and receive the least amount of tax dollars per mile,” he said.

The Illinois township road commissioner handles a separate levy, budget and, in Antioch, 86 miles of road to keep safe and in good repair.

After 39 years with Antioch Township, Ring says is ready to retire and spend time with his family – especially his four grandchildren who range in age from 5 to 18 months.

Since Ring’s term is not up until April 2017, the Antioch Town Board unanimously appointed Ring’s son, Eric, as road commissioner to complete that term. He does plan to run for the job in April and says his biggest challenge is proving himself capable of managing that job. Eric Ring

has worked on the township road crew for 10 years and began at the bottom, with plowing, mowing the sides of the roads, putting up signs and dealing with flooding issues.

Six years ago, Eric Ring computerized all records and saved time and money by improving the efficiency of departmental record keeping.

Memories will follow Mark Ring said he carries many memories with him into retirement.

“I began working here in 1977. I started at the bottom, running large equipment, plowing the snow in the winter, mowing grass along the roadsides in the summer and helping to prepare four to six miles of road for blacktopping every year.”

“My dad, Blaine Ring,” he continued, “was elected road commissioner in 1981 and died before the first year of his four-year term was up.”

The township board appointed a township trustee, Dave Heath, to finish out Blaine Ring’s term.

Venetian Night is Aug. 6 on Pistakee Lake Boat parade will be followed by fireworks display

The ninth annual Venetian Night will be held Saturday, Aug. 6, on Pistakee Lake at West Grand Avenue.

This year’s theme is “It’s 5 o’clock Somewhere on the Chain.”

The block party begins at 6 p.m. with the parade of boats to follow at 7:30 p.m. (boat parade leaves from Famous Freddie’s) and a fireworks finale at 9:30 p.m.

Prizes will be awarded to boats based on creativity,

costumes, decorations and lighting.

• First place – $500 • Second place – $300 • Third place – $200 Advanced registration is required. Cost is $25 per boat.

husband. She does not have any money to get her own apartment yet. Her utilities are disconnected, and their home is foreclosed on. Her husband is still using heroin so she has put new locks on her room to lock herself and our grandson in at night. It is a very scary situation right now.” It sounded like it was indeed a very scary situation that we needed to help this mother and child out of.

After speaking with the woman for some time, I set up a time to meet with them and their daughter at the parents’ apartment. The following day, I arrived to find them all at the small apartment. The daughter, her parents and an 8-year-old boy all squeezed in on the couch and they gave me what looked to be the only other chair in the apartment. The grandparents asked the boy if he would like to watch some TV in their room. He was more than happy to accommodate his grandparents’ wishes. The adults all sat to talk without worrying about overwhelming the child with stress over his father’s addiction and their financial difficulties.

The daughter had brought over her bank statements and bills as I had requested.

I looked through these and saw the withdrawals and sometimes negative balances brought on by the husband’s removal of their funds. The wife told me how she had been saving funds in the savings account for a vacation and to have emergency funds available. Those were all gone along with the funds needed to pay their mortgage and utilities. The daughter told me how her husband had been changing, but she never suspected a drug addiction. She thought he was in pain yet from his shoulder, and her husband had sometimes complained about the amount of stress he was in at work. The woman told me how she had been physically sick when she had found all the empty prescription bottles and even drug paraphernalia in her husband’s car. The woman said, “If my husband could become as addicted as he is now, let his whole life and everything he loved go, this can happen to anyone.” I

After our assistance, this woman and her son were able to move on without the constant strain and worry of living with an addict. They now had an apartment with utilities. They now have food in their refrigerator. We provided new beds and several pieces of furniture for their apartment. We had her car repaired and also put new tires on to ensure safe transportation to and from work. We provided first month’s rent and security deposit to ensure they were safely out of the empty foreclosed home. They were able to live independently in their small apartment. When I called the woman to check in on them, she sounded much happier. The woman said, “My husband left me a voicemail saying he looked at the packet of information you left him.

He said he will look into the drug rehabilitation center you suggested. I know it is too late for our marriage to be saved, but I do thank you for at least trying to save his life.

Hopefully one day he will be able to thank you. I will not talk to him again until he has checked himself in to one. I am focusing my life around my son now. We no longer have to lock ourselves in our room and put on a radio to drown out the sounds my husband made while using drugs. We are finding happiness again. We are going to church again. I can never thank The Time is Now

Dear readers, I have said many times that The Time Is Now to Help is not equipped to help people dealing with addictions. We do not have counselors or the training to give our fellow creations the help they need to overcome these powerful addictions. We do however help the loved ones and innocent children who have been affected by those caught in the throes of an addiction. While this letter written by a worried parent did not provide many details of the assistance needed for this woman and child, I thought it would be good to look into this situation further.

I called the parent who had written this letter to find out more information. When I called, the phone was answered by the mother who had written the letter. She was very happy to talk with me about her daughter’s situation and grateful I had taken the time to call. We discussed the present living arrangements for the daughter and grandchild. The woman told me her daughter and grandson stayed with her once or twice a week but because of her living in a senior housing complex, they were not allowed to live there fulltime. She also told me they lived in a one-bedroom apartment and with her daughter and grandson there, it was very cramped for everyone. The woman said, “Right now she is living in her home with her

told the parents and daughter how many times I have helped families affected by drug addictions. It is a huge problem in our country and not just in inner cities or poverty stricken areas. I have been seeing it in families just like theirs, well-adjusted loving families, for many years.

After reviewing all her outstanding bills and discussing her job and income, we worked out a plan for her and the son. I felt the mother and child truly needed to get out of the home they were sharing with the addicted husband as his behavior had been becoming more and more erratic as he fell further and further into his addiction. I knew of a small one-bedroom apartment that was very reasonable and, most importantly, was available immediately to get them out of their dangerous living situation. When I discussed this with the woman and her parents, they were all very excited to have her make this move. The woman told me she would like to pack up as much of her belongings as she could, at least the ones her husband hadn’t ruined or sold. She told me she would call when she was ready to leave her home, when her husband was not home to cause a scene for their child to see.

Two days later, the woman called and said she was ready to go. Her parents had helped her load her belongings in her car and theirs. The husband had not even noticed as she packed up her dishes, pans and toiletries. Her son’s toys had been packed in several boxes and put in his closet along with his suitcase of clothing. I looked around what had once been a nice family home but now showed signs of neglect and abuse, holes in the walls that the woman told me were from her husband’s angry fists and burn marks on the counters and walls from her husband’s drugs and cooking mishaps.

As the woman looked around the house one last time, I saw her wiping away her tears. She said, “I had so many hopes and

By the time our daughter found out all the details of this secret he was hiding, he had already emptied their savings and checking accounts. Popular Chicago-based rhythm and blues band R-Gang entertains the crowd during the “It’s Thursday” concert held at the Brook Bandshell, 900 Skidmore Dr., earlier this summer. The Melloncamp concert scheduled for July 21 had to be cancelled when a brief but powerful thunderstorm raced through the area. With just three more concerts on the schedule, this year’s season is winding down. The Parks and Recreation Department series, which began in mid-June, will conclude Thursday, Aug 11. The final three concerts will feature Dancing Queen: An ABBA Salute (July 28), The Blooze Brothers along with the annual classic and custom car show (Aug 4), and Hillbilly Rockstarz (Aug 11). won that election and seven more after that.

The road crew is the reason for his longevity, Ring said. “They didn’t work for me, they worked with me and together we worked for the public to keep the roadways safe.”

The crew consists of eight full-time and one part-time worker and the road commissioner. “We never had a secretary,” Ring said. “We shared those duties and everyone was cross-trained to handle any job that needed to be done.”

Ring was often the one sitting at the desk or answering the phone when the public came calling.

“When residents come in

to the office,” he said, “I’m right there to give them definitive answers.”

“I answered the phone,” he continued, “and wasn’t trying to figure out messages. A big part of the road commissioner’s job is to work with the public.”

With 86 miles of road to maintain, the smaller budget didn’t allow for a secretary, since all hands were needed on the road during inclement weather.

“There are times when we work for days,” Ring recalled.

The winter of 1978-79 was the worst that Ring remembers. “We had 20 inches of light, feathery snow and it was very cold,” “Every time the wind

would change,” he continued, “the snow would blow and drift in a different direction. First the wind blew out of the west and the north and south roads were covered. We moved that snow.”

Then the wind direction changed, blowing out of the north and that same snow now covered the east and west roads.

The weather is a huge factor when attempting to make plans to repair roads.

“Inclement weather causes crews to deal with flooding, fallen trees or huge amounts of snow,” Ring said. “Any plans to repair roads and prepare roads for blacktopping are tentative, as weather allows.”

Passing the written exam at the end of this class allows youth ages 12 to 16 to operate a watercraft on their own. This course is primarily designed to train young people between the ages of 12 and 16. Students younger than the age of 11 may not participate in the exam to receive certification.

Her prospects are soaring Jackson a pioneer in Central Aviation Club

When Nicole Jackson was a freshman at Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake, Wis., she played basketball and supported the Falcons as a cheerleader, but the recent graduate never envisioned becoming a pioneer in flight.

Jackson, who crossed the stage to accept her diploma in June, became the first student to conduct a solo flight on the Falcon One airplane, assembled by her and other Central STEM Aviation Club classmates.

Falcon One, an RV-12 aircraft is a two-seat plane equipped with a 100-horsepower Rotax engine, was made possible through a donation made by nonprofit organization Eagle’s Nest along with program mentor James Senft. Jackson, last year’s club co-president with Olivia Rasmussen, stated the 13-month project is fortunate to have the support of Senft and Eagle’s Nest.

“Eagle’s Nest, our sponsor, has been so amazing to us,” Jackson said. “Aviation is very hard to get into with the large cost that comes with it.”

Total price for the plane kit, which had been a simple box of parts, was $70,000 with an additional $30,000 for supplies.

Jackson commended Senft, who spent several months helping students, for maintaining an orderly flow.

“I don’t know who else could organize all this and not go crazy,” Jackson stated. “The amount of hours Mr. Senft has in this club really shows his passion of

spreading aviation.”

An early passion The passion spread to Jackson, who said the stratosphere had always been a curiosity, and wanted to learn more.

Jackson stated she often went to the planetarium, and through her time with a Kenosha County 4-H Club, she attended a SpaceCamp before her freshman year at Westosha Central.

The school’s STEM Aviation Club only intensified her passion.

“It wasn’t really until high school that I really became interested in airplanes,” she said. “This club told me that this would be the right ca-

After three years, opportunity knocked when she along with 16 other club members received the airplane kit, bringing more benefits beyond building.

One benefit was an ability to obtain a pilot’s license and fly the aircraft when completed.

First in flight Jackson had been the first among all students to take control of plane June 13, with Rasmussen following suit, taking her flight June 15.

The first experience pushed Jackson’s adrenaline, and took time to absorb her emotions as she lifted off the runway.

“I started to get those nervous jitters, but as soon as I got off the ground they went away and it was kind of this feeling of, ‘Is this really happening?’” Jackson recalled.

“I felt a mix of excitement at the thrill of being up there alone, and peace from just being able to enjoy my new freedom.”

Two days later, before Rasmussen took her solo flight, Jackson recalled giving her advice.

“The biggest thing I had to say was how much quicker you takeoff,” Jackson said. “The weight of only one person allows the plane to be more responsive.”

“This is one thing that took me by surprise when it first took off. It also allows you to climb very quickly,” Jackson added.

Traveler’s checklist Since Jackson’s first flight, she has embarked on four flights, all close to Burlington’s airport as part of training.

Her most recent mission was a night flight.

“I recently completed a night flight with stops in Madison and Watertown and I think that has been one of my favorite flights so far.

Seeing Madison’s lights from above was extremely pretty,” she said.

After she completed the night flight, she embarked

on a short solo flight to Monroe Municipal Airport, leaving just two items left on her list.

The two items are the long solo cross-country and check ride with an examiner.

Future endeavors As she checks off all items on the list, she plans to pursue a career in aerospace engineering at Milwaukee School of Engineering in the fall.

But, given her experience at Westosha Central, she could be well ahead of

the game with her future classmates. The experience is something she could not have imagined when she entered Westosha Central.

“I don’t think anyone four years ago could have imagined this happening. A group of high school aged kids building an airplane sounds like something that couldn’t be done,” Jackson said. “When I started high school, I was a cheerleader and a basketball player. As soon as I heard this club was starting, I knew I had to do this club instead.”

Late Virginia Gnat honored for her service to seniors

Love and dedication were two of several qualities that Virginia Gnat exhibited, which earned her a spot July 18 on the Outstanding Citizen flagpole at Central Park in Twin Lakes, Wis., according to friends and family members.

Along with her family and friends, elected officials, including Trustee Tom Connolly, were on hand to commemorate the honor.

Connolly always remembered her appearances at Village Board meetings, where Gnat expressed excitement over the Twin Lakes Senior Club, an organization she founded in 2006.

“She provided a lot of trips, different activities for the seniors, that was her main thing and she cared about all of them,” Connolly said. “I have been on the board since 1997 on, and off, she has been there every year, telling us about the seniors and what they need and what they are going to do.”

Gnat, the late Twin Lakes/ Westosha Report seniors columnist, penned 672 “Young at Heart” columns geared towards helping more than 200 members of the Twin Lakes Senior Club before her passing Feb. 15 at 85.

Betty Loranger, 82, a member of the Senior Club since 2004, recalled how proud Gnat was of her family consisting of three adult children, six grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.

“Her family was so important to her, and (she) was so proud of every one of her kids, grandkids and great grandkids,” Loranger stated.

“We may not know which is which, but we know that her grandkids are around.”

One of her grandchildren, Chris Nelson, a Wilmot Union High School graduate and current quarterback at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater, was surprised when members of her Senior Club approached him at her funeral.

“I thought it was pretty cool, even at her funeral, some people I never even knew before, know just as much about me as my whole family,” Nelson said.

Gnat, who spent her last years listening to Nelson’s games on the radio, had her dream of seeing him play in person at Whitewater’s Perkins Stadium for her 85th birthday.

The first-hand experience was enough for Gnat to fondly recall the moment in one of her columns.

as a surprise. He said she always exhibited a passion for the family.

“It just goes to show how much she liked to talk about us, and it goes to show how proud of her family she was,” Nelson stated.

Cheryl Nelson, Chris’ mother and daughter of Virginia, stated Gnat not only loved her family and the senior community, but the village as a whole.

Gnat’s love of the community prompted her move to Twin Lakes from Chicago in 1992 along with her husband, Lawrence, who died in 2006.

“She loved Twin Lakes and wanted to do everything she could for Twin Lakes,” Cheryl Nelson stated.

With the passing of her husband in 2006, she opted to serve the community, establishing the Senior Club, and later became the columnist for the Twin Lakes/Westosha Report.

As she battled cancer for 22 years, Gnat still demonstrated the passion to help coordinate trips and community events, engaging the senior community.

“She worked really hard to get on that plaque and she was

very proud of what she did for the Senior Club, and I am very proud of what she did,” said her son Larry, who owns Touch of Class, just feet from the flagpole bearing her name.

Jeralyn agreed with her brother, adding that the Senior Club was her second family.

“The seniors were her second family and they loved her as much as she loved them.

She did it for them,” Jeralyn stated.

Loranger felt Gnat’s love since her arrival to Twin Lakes eight years earlier, and will always remember the moments she had.

“She was one of the most caring people that I have ever had the privilege of knowing,” Loranger said. “She has done so much for the seniors in making sure we were going out and we were active.”

The honor did not come as a surprise for Chris Nelson, who remembered his grandmother talking about her Senior Club as he was growing up.

“She is definitely deserving of this award,” Chris Nelson said. “I know she has done a lot for the seniors in the community and a lot of us saw it coming.”

Highway F in Kenosha County was the scene of another crash July 16 when a vehicle rolled over, resulting in the driver being airlifted to Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa, Wis. Officials said he is expected to survive.

Highway F in Western Kenosha County, Wis., was the site of another crash July 16, according to the Kenosha County Sheriff’s Department, but there were no fatal injuries in the most recent accident.

Deputies responded to the scene at about 11:15 p.m. where they discovered a vehicle had rolled over and the driver had been ejected.

On scene, a Kenosha County Sheriff’s Deputy stated Flight For Life had been called to transport the 32-year-old, and referred additional comments to Sgt. Daniel Ruth.

Ruth, who confirmed the crash Monday, said the 32-yearold driver, Raymond Casey, is recovering following treatment at Froedtert Hospital in Wauwatosa.

“He was flighted to Froedtert Hospital with possible life-threatening injuries, Raymond was unconscious,” Ruth said. “I understand that Mr. Casey is now doing better and recovering from his injuries.”

On the go with a smartphone craze It’s all the rage and a cutting-edge craze – sweeping not only the nation, but the entire world. If you don’t have an inkling of understanding about what the verve is all about, chances are you’re aware of the buzz about Pokémon Go. And, if you’re like me, you wish you had the foresight to invest in the Nintendo Company a couple of months ago.

Pokémon Go is a new game played on mobile devices. On July 12, less than a week after it was first released, the app became the most active mobile game in the United States ever with 21 million users. This thing is bigger than Candy Crush Saga.

Mobile apps are a dime a dozen (or often free, as is the case with Pokémon Go).

Except this game is different from the others in one major way. It is location-based.

in your living room. The game requires that you go out. Into the real world. To find and catch imaginary Pokémon (animal-like cartoon creatures) and hatch their eggs.

Makes perfect sense.

Hatching eggs requires a couple of things: a virtual incubator and walking.

If kids (and kids who have already technically grown up) want to hatch an egg, they first place it in an incubator located on their phone. Then they get moving. In the real world, in real time. Eggs take anywhere from two to 10

kilometers to hatch. For those of you not living on the metric side of things, one kilometer is a little more than half a mile.

The app keeps track of the distance you’ve traveled and hatches the egg accordingly.

And don’t even think about cheating the system.

Distance counting stops when a player exceeds a certain speed, so driving in a car doesn’t count toward egg hatching. You’ve got to hoof it.

Players travel between places like PokeStops and PokeGyms (located at various places around town) to capture and battle – all while they are outside, exercising without even realizing it. Here’s the Poké magic: they just think they are having fun. There’s hasn’t been anything this ingenious since kick-the-can.

perspective. Pre-Pokémon, I was the one battling – to get my kids off the couch and away from the screen. Now they’ve still got the screen, but at least they are off the couch. Playing outside.

Nothing this popular can skate (or walk) by without some amount of criticism. People walking or biking while staring at their phone screens is like distracted driving without the car. Walking the streets after dark may put kids at risk of not being seen by motorists. And, players hunting Pokémon at places like museums, cemeteries, memorial sites and fire stations aren’t always embraced by the nonplayers visiting or working at those sites.

Still, I’m a proponent.
