Antioch Fire Chief John Nixon has taken a job as chief for the smaller community of Fox River and Countryside Fire Rescue District in St. Charles in Kane County. Matt Tabar, First Fire Protection District 1 board member said, “This is a smaller district and it is closer to Chief Nixon’s home in Algonquin.” Nixon informed Village of Antioch officials and fire protection district board last week of the move. His last day will be Sept. 2. Nixon has served as Antioch fire chief for more than six years. His new district has two fire stations that are each staffed 24/7 by four firefighter/paramedics. Tabar said fire district board met in closed ses-
sion to discuss replacement methods and a possible interim fire chief. individuals “Several have expressed interest in the position,” Tabar said. The district board met with the Antioch Village Board in a closed session after the Village Board’s regular meeting on Aug. 8. “This is the first time that both boards have worked directly with each other,” Tabar said. “We will develop a joint plan as we move forward.” Antioch Mayor Larry Hanson said, “This was unexpected and the village and fire district will work together to maximize the talent we have, develop a short-term solution that will be in place while we create a process to find a long-term solution.” “We are a team,” he said.

In the late 1800s, visions of boats sailing across the lakes of the Chain O’ Lakes, with their white sails billowing, were a common sight. The speed of the boats was dependent on both the strength and the direction of the winds and the skill of the sailor manipulating the sails. Sailors were kindred spirits so it was not surprising that many of these groups, often weekend sailors, who came to their summer homes on the chain, would form sailing or yacht clubs. These clubs became centers of sailing competition and social activities. One of the very active Yacht Clubs was the Pistakee Yacht Club founded in 1897 by a group of Pistakee residents headed by Henry L. Hertz. A clubhouse became the next item on the yacht club’s agenda. On a piece of property – which today is still the home of the Pistakee Yacht Club – owned by Mary P. Hertz wife of Henry, a clubhouse was built. It was used as a social gathering place in the summer including a dance pavilion where members and their spouses would gather after a day on the water. In the winter, it stored members’ sailboats. Fundraisers such as dances and men’s smokers, popular in the early 1900s, helped pay off the club’s debt. In spite of fundraising efforts the club still owed the Hertz family for the purchase of the land. The time is now to help
Family struggles after father’s heart surgery Dear W.C., My daughter, son-in-law and grandchildren are in desperate need of your help. My son-in-law recently had heart surgery and has been unable to return to work after several complications. His health insurance has a very high deductible and co-pays that they will be struggling to pay their portion of. His doctors think it will be several months before he can safely return to work. His unemployment is not nearly as much as he was earning before. I know they are struggling much more than my daughter is telling me because she does not want me to worry. Last time I stopped by their house they had hardly any food in the kitchen and they were not running their air-conditioning, even though it was very hot outside. I wish I could help them but I am barely getting by on my Social Security. Please help them as they are very hard working good people. Dear readers, We receive letters each week from hard-working, good people – people struggling because of their health, senior citizens, our fellow Americans with mental and physical challenges and women with children. It is always hard to choose who is the most deserving or most in need. We do our best to investigate each situation to ensure our assistance is given to those in the most desperate need first.

the husband. He filled me in on some more details of his valve replacement surgery and the delay in his recovery. His job was physically demanding so he would need more time to recover before returning to work. I talked to him about the importance of a healthy diet, and the man agreed. He knew the diet they were consuming was not helpful to his heart condition, but it was all they could afford. The husband told me how his wife had gone to the food pantry a few times and was happy with what they brought home but the fresh foods did not last all month. The husband looked down at his work-worn hands and said, “These hands have always worked so hard to take care of my family. Now they are useless. I have put my family in this position because of my health. I don’t know how to correct this until I can at least return to work. The doctor said that could be another month at least. My wife is already working so hard taking care of me and now she is getting a job waitressing at night to help too. I feel like such a burden.” I watched as those work-worn hands wiped tears of frustration and shame from his eyes. When the wife returned I saw the husband quickly hide his tear-filled eyes. As I looked over their bank statements, noting the lower income over the past few months compared to in the past, the wife again tried to make the husband more comfortable. I saw the large medical bills that they would be responsible for a portion because of their high deductible health insurance plan. The husband and wife both said they regretted having chosen that plan to save money each month on their premiums. At the time they picked the plan for their family, they thought they all were healthy and young enough to not worry too

much about major surgeries or illness. It is a gamble many people take each year when they choose their health insurance plans. I looked through their household bills and noted their utilities were all delinquent. I also noted the car repairs I seem to find throwing off everyone’s budgets these days. The combination of serious health problems, car repairs and lowered income can quickly put any family in a terrible position financially. I knew they needed our help to turn their situation from one of fear and poverty to once again being able to support themselves financially. I also knew this assistance would help the husband recover quicker as we removed the constant financial stress he was living with and they were able to eat healthier as well. I laid out a plan to help this family get on their feet once more. The wife said she would continue to work as long as was needed to help her family. We would bring their utilities up to date and pay a month into the future to provide them with a financial cushion. We also provided some much-needed fresh produce and healthy foods to help with the husband’s recovery. Their car was repaired completely rather than the small fixes they had been doing to get by. They owned the modest home and their mortgage payments were more reasonable than paying rent elsewhere. We brought their payment up to date and a month ahead as well. All this assistance you provided was what they needed to get by until the husband could return to fulltime work once more. After going over this plan with the husband and wife, I could see they both were hiding tears. We also noticed three older children all watching us from the doorway to the kitchen. They all had smiles on their faces and ran into the room to hug their mother and father. The oldest boy said, “Mom and Dad, did you think you were keeping this secret from us? Do you think we did not notice when you ate less than us and turned off all the lights and air-conditioning? We are not little children anymore. We’ve seen The Time Is Now to Help talk at our school and even help other people at our school. We never thought they would

be helping us one day.” The woman hugged her son and said, “We never thought we would need help either, but thank God they are here to help us. We will not keep this from you any longer.” We all were in tears now. After many hugs of gratitude, I was on my way to begin their assistance. After several weeks of our support this family was able to move on unaided. The father was recovering much quicker without the constant financial stress and shame wearing him down. He even made a commitment to exercise regularly and follow a heart health-diet. This diet was made much easier thanks to all of you. Their car was reliable and safe. Their utilities were not in danger of disconnection. Thanks to all of you this family was able to recover completely from this medical and financial disaster. These are the good people we are helping each day with your support. My dear friends, together we continue to remove the pain and suffering of poverty for our good fellow creations who need and deserve our help. I cannot do this alone. It takes all of us together. Slices of life It’s over. The wedding. My daughter and her new husband tied the knot last Saturday in a whirlwind weekend of near perfection. The loving couple has been preparing for this for over a year. They were kind enough to allow me to enjoy an active role in the process. I am a planner by nature; my daughter inherited the planning gene. An upcoming wedding is pretty much the epitome of joy for planful persons like us. We dove into the process with gung ho glee. This daughter-mother duo had to-do lists. And lists of our lists. And sometimes lists

of the secondary lists, or lists of each other’s lists. We even learned to take photos of our lists so we wouldn’t have to worry about the unlikely (but horrifying) possibility of misplacing or losing one. There were spreadsheets of invitations sent, wedding registry items, meal choices and anything else we thought
might fit on a spreadsheet. We created the décor. Chose napkin colors. Designed programs and invites. Perused the web looking for dresses and cake flavors. Secured something old, new, borrowed and even blue. We had meetings with florists, musicians, the pastor and other nuptial aficionados. We scheduled dates for showers and bridal parties and myriad other wedding-related events. It consumed our days for months; each one was a 24hour planning opportunity and we were in our glory. We welcomed our roles as wedding plan warriors.
No job, no detail was too big or too small. We took on daunting tasks and embraced the insignificant. From tulle and flowers at the church to cupcakes in our freezer, we had it covered from veil to bustle to garter. It occupied our time and creative energy and became a priority over other regular mundane and menial activities. Weeds overtook the garden. Decluttering the basement could wait. We had important things to do. We had a wedding to plan! At first, it seemed the date was eons in the future. We counted down: the number
of months until the wedding. Then the weeks. And then we were counting the days. From time to time my husband expressed bewilderment at our vigor and busyness. As we got nearer to the date, our preparedness took on a new level of frenzy and he was even more perplexed. “You’ve been planning for months,” he said. “It seems like you should be done by now.” He didn’t understand the universal law of prepping for a big event: the closer you get, the more the activity level amplifies. Then we drafted him into service. For the two
days prior to the ceremony we kept him busy 24/7 and his steadfast and faithful hands-on experience converted him to the cause. And then the big day came. And went. And now it’s over. And I’m not sure what to do. Oh, there’s a certain amount of residual clean up to occupy me for a short while. But I’m so used to being terribly busy with the notion of planning for the Very Big Day that regular life is going to feel peculiar for a while. My daughter forgot a few things here at home

cluded wrestling matches, dice games and slot machines. Dog shows and cattle and fish exhibits were present to entertain the fairgoers. The fair raised $2,500, allowing payment of the mortgage and a ceremonial burning of the mortgage papers by Hertz. The prosperity of the club was short lived as interest in sailing decreased during World War I and the clubhouse fell into disrepair. After the return of soldiers from the war, interest in sailing resumed and the yacht club again grew and prospered. The Pistakee Yacht Club was a charter member of the Inland Lake Yachting Association, which was formed in 1898. Together with 16 yacht clubs from Illinois and Wisconsin they formed the group of original members. The association set rules and standards for races and even designated that only one yacht per member club could be entered in the annual association regatta, causing a break in its membership and the formation of a new organization, the
(Continued from front page) Northwestern Yachting Association, in 1908. Some of the clubs, including the Pistakee Yacht Club, maintained membership in both associations. Racing was the favorite pastime and each weekend members of the local yacht clubs participated in the regattas held at the local clubs. Regattas are composed of a series of boat races. A special Regatta called the Blue Chip Regatta was started at the Pistakee Yacht Club in 1960, the work of member John Loose. The Blue Chip was originally limited to the very best boaters in their class based on current season’s performance. The Blue Chip Regatta continues to be held each year, but is no longer held at Pistakee but at the Pewaukee Yacht Club in Wisconsin. Life on Pistakee during the 1950s and ’60s included sailing and other water activities during the day and dinners and dances at the yacht club in the evening. Just as today in the Chain O’ Lakes community, lake activities dominated the summer.
Today there are fewer white sails seen on the Chain O’ Lakes than before as speedboats have become more popular. But not everyone has given up on sailboats. For years the yacht club held a sailing school to introduce children and other adults to the sport. While not officially a part of the yacht club, the school came about thanks to several members who were concerned at the decreasing interest in sailing. The Community Sailing School of Pistakee offers instruction in sailing to children and adults. With new equipment and competent instructors, the sailing school holds classes at the Pistakee Yacht Club. Today the Pistakee Yacht Club continues to stand on the shores of Pistakee although membership is much smaller than in days of old. It is no longer the hub of weekend races but perhaps with the sailing school encouraging more new sailors to the sport interest in sailing on Pistakee will grow.

Library’s spot in county system is in peril By Gail Peckler-Dziki CORRESPONDENT
The Kenosha County, Wis., Library System Board has sent letters to the village presidents of Paddock Lake, Twin Lakes and Silver Lake and the town chairmen of Randall and Salem, warning the budgeting process for next year is to begin and the Community Library isn’t in the picture. Some time after the birth of the Community Library in Western Kenosha County, the law changed regarding the representation of libraries with a multiplicity of owners. The Community Library began with an intergovernmental agreement between the villages of Silver Lake and Paddock Lake and the Town of Salem. In the early 1990’s, the Village of Twin Lakes and Town of Randall joined the effort. Salem is the largest municipality in the system, with more than 12,000 residents. Twin Lakes is next in size, followed by Randall, Paddock Lake and Silver Lake. One way the municipalities sought to keep things on an even keel was for each to have two board members with the one state-required representative from the high school districts in the area. Wilmot would appoint one representative for three years, then Central would have its turn. The Community Library is part of the Kenosha County System. That could be about to change. State law regarding representation on the Community Library Board has changed, requiring the municipal membership be allotted by population. That change would give the Town of Salem more members than the other communities.
This creates some difficulties. First, in the past a long-term group of library leadership and board members created a situation where Salem appeared to be favored in the allotment of services despite the fact that all communities contributed to the funding of the library. Second, since library board membership is voluntary and unpaid, it is hard to find residents who wish to sit on the board. In order to continue to receive the state funding needed and to keep its place in the county system, the five involved communities must develop an agreement setting up board membership that is compliant with state law. Last year, Salem developed an agreement that allowed the town to allocate some members to other communities. Town Administrator Pat Casey had a verbal agreement from the Department of Public Instruction, which oversees libraries in Wisconsin. Kathy Christensen, who is a member of both the Paddock Lake Village Board and Community Library Board, wrote to John DeBacher and requested a written approval of the plan. No written approval was received. Then Paddock Lake wrote an agreement that created a 10-member board, with a school district representative. All except Salem signed this agreement. Salem put forth another agreement with nine representatives, working with DPI to refine it. There has been no joint meeting of the municipal heads regarding the update of the agreement, as there was the last time in 2008.
