A quartet of 10-year-old cheerleaders (from left) Sydney Osgood, Faith Francke, Jazzy Fisher, and Olivia Moisa let out a cheer as items are unloaded in preparation for the fourth The Antioch Traveling Closet at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Saturday. Coach Dave Moisa arranged for the cheerleaders along with 19 members of his Pac 10 Middleweight Antioch Viking football team, and many other volunteers to assist in the loading and unloading of the Piggly Wiggly truck that was filled with boxes of clothing, shoes, and personal hygiene products. The distribution event was held on Sunday. A line, eventually 50 strong, began to form at 9:45, almost two hours prior to the scheduled opening. Police arrest teen for threats against school

A 19-year-old Franklin Park man, who was apparently upset over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, is accused of threatening to carry out a violent attack at Antioch Community High School last week, according to local police. At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16, the Antioch Police Department was alerted by the parents of a Community High School student of threats made to carry out a violent attack at the school, Antioch Police said in a news release. Officers learned the student had received multiple threats by text messaging from an ex-boyfriend, who made direct threats against students of the high school. According to police, the investigation revealed the threats stemmed from the suspect being upset over a recent breakup with the student. Through an overnight investigation, the suspect was identified as Nicholas Stevens, of the 2700 block of Elder Lane in Franklin Park. At approximately 1 a.m. Stevens was taken into custody at his home, and he was taken to the Antioch Police Department where he was charged with the following: • Harassment through elec-

tronic communication, a Class 4 felony; • Disorderly conduct, transmitting a threat of destruction or threats of vioNicholas lence against Stevens persons at a school, a Class 4 felony. In Illinois a Class 4 felony is punishable by up to three years in prison for each offense, and up to a $25,000 fine. Police said they were engaged in regular communication with Community High School District administration during the investigation and will continue to work together to ensure the safety of students and staff. “It has been determined that there is currently no risk to the school stemming from this event, and parents, students, and staff can feel comfortable carrying on daily academic routines at the school,” the news release stated. Stevens appeared in Lake County Court last week for a bond hearing, where the judge remanded him to the Lake County Jail with his bond set at $50,000.

Bill Price has a history of mentoring kids in the area. He spent 40 years coaching baseball and gymnastics at Westosha Central High School in Paddock Lake, Wis., and was also a volunteer baseball coach at Wilmot (Wis.) Union High School. He is beginning a new chapter in that history and taking his passion for mentoring and coaching kids in gymnastics to Spring Grove where he and business partner, Jill Clark Matta, have opened Westosha Legacy Athletic Club at 2449 Pierce Drive in Spring Grove. Price graduated from Central High School in 1970. He has six brothers and sisters who also graduated from Central. Clark-Matta is from Twin Lakes, Wis., and has two girls in the program, Alayna Matta and Hannah Clark. The girls are students at Randall School. The space for WLAC is more 10,000 square feet. This is a much larger space than where Price coached previ-

ously. “The area is wider than a regular gym floor,” Price explained during an open house last month. “It is 42 feet wide.” That is plenty of room to accommodate the gym kids after school program for boys and girls from kindergarten to eighth grade. There are gymnastic and tumbling classes for all levels of skill, from beginners to advanced to high school. The sessions run for eight weeks and the first began on August 1. Registration for each term begins five weeks prior to the start of the term. WLAC will take registration at any time and prorate fees for those who start after a term has begun. Classes are scheduled for Monday through Friday afternoons and Saturday mornings. For a complete schedule and list of fees, visit the website, westoshalegacyac.com. The office is open Monday through Friday from 3:30 to 6 p.m. and the telephone number is (815) 675-3005. The

Summer Vacation Letters Hi, I’m Pamela Miceli and I live in Springfield, Wisconsin. I am 15 years old and going into 10th grade. This summer, I have done a lot for others and with my family. One of my favorite things to do is go to work with my step-mom. She is a nurse’s aid and takes care of a man that has MS. I help her out with feeding him, sweeping and mopping, doing the dishes and much more. On Wednesdays, me, my nephew and my step-mom go to the movies to spend time together. My step-mom’s friends, Judy and Terri, are getting ready to move. I helped them clean out their whole basement! They were very grateful and I was glad to help. Sometimes, when we don’t have much to do, my step-mom, my nephew and I go to Monkey Joes to play and have fun. We love taking my nephew to a hotel called Timber Ridge in Lake Geneva. They have a big water park that my nephew just loves. Recently, I helped out at a bible school. There were many little children there and a few adult staff members. I was considered a junior staff member. I help keep the kids safe, along with passing food out and helping with crafts. Me and my step-mom had a garage sales. We wanted to make money to buy some school clothes for the upcoming year. When it’s nice outside, my step-mom, my sister, my nephew and I go to the beach for a good portion of our day. I enjoy playing in the

water and building sand castles with my nephew. He also loves when I bury him. I’m not great at it, but I really love to skateboard. I’ve done that during my free time. I’m getting better and better at it. My grandpa lives in Arkansas and we don’t get to see him much so we took a trip down there! It was a long car ride, but it was completely worth it. We played lots of cards, took walks and spent lots of time together. After visiting my grandpa, we flew to Florida where my sister is! It’s very hot all the time there, but it was a blast! We went to this very big beach, took walks, ate at new places and spent as much time as we could in the sun. I somtimes get the chance to babysit my nephew. We play with lots of toys and jump on the trampoline. I own many sorts of books. I’m a big fan of reading. When I’m not skateboarding you can find me reading a book! When my best friend came to spend the night, we walked on a bike trail next to where I live. We walked at least 10 miles! Sometimes my sister, my nephew, my step-mom and I go on picnics at the park. I really enjoy this! We also went to the fair in East Troy! They had some cool rides and I rode them for at least 9 hours with my best friend. I’ve done so much this summer, I can’t even pick my favorite! I’ve learned new things and had many obstacles. I hope there are many more wonderful summers to come!

My summer vacation has been very busy. One of the first things we did on my summer vacation was help my great grandma move from Crivitz to Muskego. We went to my great grandma’s apartment to celebrate my grandma’s birthday. My mom and my brother and I gave her flowers. Not too long ago I went to Six Flags Great America. First we went on Batman and the line was very long. Finally we got on the roller coaster and took a lot of tight turns. We also went to another Batman but this Batman literally went upside down. Here’s all the rides we went to East River Crawler, River Rocker, Demon, Buccaneer Battle, Little Batman, Big Batman and the carousel. I’m also looking forward to horse camp and football. So that’s how my summer is going so far.

Bristol to fill the boot Aug. 27 Fire department hopes to make it annual event

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Even though the Jerry Lewis Labor Day telethon came to an end in 2015, the battle against muscular dystrophy continues, and some area fire departments have stepped up to raise funds. The 24-hour telethon that ran for 61 years stopped production last year, citing a need for new and creative fundraising methods including the now famous Ice Bucket Challenge, according to several national news sources. Bristol, Wis., Fire and Rescue is looking to raise awareness and funds on Saturday, Aug. 27 at highways 45 and 50 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. All proceeds from the department’s Fill the Boot campaign go directly to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, according to Bristol Firefighter/EMT Chris Medlock. “Every penny raised through Fill the Boot goes directly to MDA, and all personnel participating in collecting donations are volunteers,” Medlock said. “This event does not financially benefit the fire department in any way.” The proceeds, he said, will bolster research efforts, maintaining educational materials, and enhance clinical trials and new medications. While fire departments have participated in the campaign for about 60 years, Bristol Fire and Rescue looks to make it an annual event, after they raised more than $5,000

last year. “Bristol Fire and Rescue has been participating intermittently for a number of years, but decided in 2015 to participate annually moving forward,” stated Medlock, who has been with the department for eight years. The Fill the Boot campaign is not their only contribution, however, after the department pitched in at an MDA camp at Lake Wonderland in Camp Lake earlier in the summer. At Camp Wonderland, Medlock reports that Department coordinator Karla Creuziger and another Bristol member offered interactive activities to children and adults, including a tour of some fire trucks. “They brought our Rescue Engine to participate in the Camp’s parade, and were able to spend the morning fishing, playing baseball and looking at area fire apparatus alongside some of the campers,” Medlock stated. As they contribute to the cause in several ways, Medlock acknowledged their efforts are just a small part of a larger picture. “Standing on the corner collecting donations in a fire boot is the very least we can do to support these individuals,” he said. Another area fire department, Town of Salem Fire and Rescue, held their Fill the Boot campaign earlier. However, it was cut short due to weather, Salem Fire Chief Mike Slover reported.

The time is now to help

Sister moves to help struggling brother Dear W.C., I am writing in hope you can help my brother. He lives alone out of state and is going through treatment for cancer. It started out as prostate cancer several years ago and just seems to keep spreading even though he has been through many treatments. Now it has spread to his bones and lungs. He is starting chemotherapy again and radiation but I worry about him living all alone with no one there to help him. I have been trying to get everything settled in my life here so I can move to live with my brother and care for him. We both just need a little help to make this all work out. My brother is behind in his utilities and rent because of some of the alternative therapies he is using to try to control the pain and make the chemotherapy tolerable. Of course, they are not covered by his health insurance even though they make a huge difference in his ability to live through this next round of treatment. I need to have my car repaired so I can drive there safely and have a vehicle to transport him to his medical appointments. There are no organizations like The Time Is Now to Help where he lives so you are our only hope. Dear readers, It saddens me to think we are the only organization that would help this man while

SAL DIMICELI Columnist

he is putting up the fight for his life. We have helped many people while they undergo treatment for cancer. It is oftentimes grueling and very debilitating. It takes every ounce of our fellow creations’ strength to get through these treatments and try to just get through the day. Getting to work is most often not even possible. If there are alternative therapies that can possibly make a cancer patient’s days more tolerable, reduce pain, relieve some of the symptoms from chemotherapy and give them the will to live once more, we should be embracing these therapies. Instead our health insurance chooses to only cover the expenses of surgeries, chemotherapies and radiations, the traditional routes to killing cancer. If you are fighting for your life, you will be looking beyond just killing the cancer, you will be looking to achieve a quality of life you cannot just tolerate but still hopefully enjoy. The out-of-pocket expense for these alternatives is often worth it to many cancer patients because of the enhanced quality of life it allows them to have. I have

seen people sell all their possessions and go through a lifetime of savings because they still have hope that they will beat this terrible disease. I called the sister who wrote this letter of request for her sick brother. We agreed to meet at her apartment to talk about any options of assistance we could provide to prevent the brother from becoming homeless and also to see if there was a way we could help the sister move to care for her brother. The sister was already crying when we began our conversation on the phone. I knew this would be an emotional home visit. I arrived at the townhouse where the sister lived. She met me at the door, as I wanted to meet her outside and look at her car in need of repairs. We introduced ourselves as we walked to her garage. I started her car and made some notes with questions for our mechanic. The car was not in bad shape. I noted the tires needed replacing. After looking over the car, I asked the woman if she would like to sit and talk at a picnic table I noticed outside. She agreed, so we moved over to the table to speak. I asked the woman if she had any pictures of her brother. She said, “I have many pictures as he has been sharing with me from his phone all he is going through.” I asked

about her brother and their relationship. The woman said, “I think my brother and I are so close because we are twins. We are both 60, never married and have no children. It is strange how many similarities we have.” The woman showed me many pictures of her brother from the time they were younger to the present. I could see the cancer had taken a toll on him physically over the past two years. The weight loss was dramatic. I asked the woman why she had not moved sooner and she said she had been looking for a job by her brother. “I have been always careful with my income and have lived very frugally. My brother did also, but he has had to use all his savings to pay for his co-pays and for the other therapies he has tried. He had to sell his condo because he could not keep up with the payments and just broke even, so now he is renting. Now he is behind in his rent and utilities. I can’t afford to pay both my bills and his, so I must move out there as soon as possible.” I asked why she did not consider moving her brother here. She shared that her brother did not want to change doctors at this point in his treatment. I asked the sister about her plan for moving. She had someone who was interested in purchasing her townhome when she was ready to move. She was planning on

selling most of her furniture. She would have a little left over once she paid off her mortgage. These funds she planned on using for her moving and living expenses until she began her new job and to help pay rent and utilities with her brother. The woman said, “It is really my brother I wish for you to help. He needs to have the threat of eviction and utility disconnection removed from his daily worries. I also worry about my car making the long trip to Oregon. I will just feel so much better once I’m there and able to help. He has no one to cook for him or drive him to appointments. We both know this next round of treatment is his only hope for survival, but he is hesitant to do this on his own.” I thought how frightening and sad it would be to have to go through something so difficult all alone, without any help from family. Thanks to all of you this brother would have his sister by his side as he tried to fight for his life. I asked the woman to call her brother so I could talk to him on the phone. She said, “I told him about you but he really didn’t believe there was such an organization like The Time is Now to Help. I told him to go to your website and he couldn’t believe it. He will be so surprised when I put you on the phone.” She dialed the phone and after

speaking to her brother for a few minutes, she put me on the phone with him. I put the phone on speaker so the sister could hear our conversation. I introduced myself and asked the brother how he was feeling. After a few minutes of polite conversation, I could hear the brother was crying. I watched as the sister heard this too, and her own eyes filled with tears. The brother said, “I try to be strong for my sister. There are many times I wanted to give up and not go through any more treatment, but she has encouraged me to continue on. When I was all alone, couldn’t pay my bills and was living in constant pain, I wondered why I was still here. I never thought it would be possible for my sister to move here to help me. I can’t believe I have never met you, yet you want to help me too. You are giving me the strength to fight again. I thought it was gone, but now I have something to look forward to. God bless you and your organization.” We all were crying then and the brother was crying so hard, he could no longer speak. After a minute I said, “It is time for us to wipe our tears and get to work.” We all found it difficult to do that, but there was much information I needed yet to complete our financial assistance. After a long phone

History lesson for a new year Local school district dates to 1843 By Sandra Landen Machaj CORRESPONDENT

When students throughout the Antioch area returned to class this week, they were keeping alive a local commitment to education that dates back to the birth of Illinois. As another school year begins for local students and teachers, it’s a good time to look at the history of education in Antioch and Illinois. In the year 1818, Illinois became the 21st state. Its population was noted to be less than 50,000. Education was quickly addressed by the new state. The Enabling Act of 1818 provided the establishment of state government. One of the early actions was the requirement that the 16th section in each congressional township be set aside for school support. That land was to be sold, rented, or farmed with the proceeds used within the township for the support of schools. Discover the

Just one year later, its first academies, considered to be the forerunners of our current high school system were established in three locations in southern Illinois, Edwardsville, Belleville and Carlyle. School districts created When the Illinois Legislature passed the Free School Act in 1825, it called for common schools to be provided in each county. The counties were thus given permission to create school districts and levy the taxes needed to support these schools. This law also allocated 2 percent of all state income to be used for school support. Voters of the district were to meet annually to establish the tax rate for the school, not to exceed 0.5 percent and not to exceed $10 per person per year. The schools were to be overseen by three trustees. Each school district had to contain a minimum of 15 families. Around 1843, Antioch established a school district and built a school in downtown Antioch near the site

of the current elementary school. This small school was sufficient to meet the needs of the community until 1892. At that time the second school in Antioch was built. The new school was a two-story brick building with four separate rooms, two on each floor. In 1915, 23 years after the completion of the new modern school, officials decided that they needed to bring the building into the 20th century where indoor plumbing was becoming the standard. Also that year marked the beginning of high school classes being offered in Antioch. Only the first two years of high school subjects were offered previously. High school is built A separate high school was built in 1915 at 1133 Main Street. The high school was originally named Antioch Township High School and was dedicated on March 24, 1916. In June, six students who had been attending high school classes in the grammar school building graduated as the first class.

The name of the school was changed to Antioch Community High School as the area from which it drew students increased. By 1927 the school had grown to 184 students and a two-story addition was added at a cost of $65,000. Growth of the Antioch area and interest in completing high school continued to increase requiring additions to the school in 1953, 1962, and 1972. By 1972 more than 1,300 students were enrolled. The original building was razed in 1998 to accommodate more additions and even more students. The number of students enrolled in kindergarten to eighth grade also continued to grow as nearby residents petitioned to detach from their school districts and annex into Antioch District No. 34. After World War II more families settled in the Antioch area further increasing the number of children to be educated. On March 17, 1945, an election was held to form a consolidated school district. By a vote of 88-7 the measure passed and the Antioch Consolidated School District No. 34 was created. Today the district contains four schools. Hillcrest School is the home school

Using the trampolines gives them a sense of what

they can do.” Gymnastics tends to be the smallest sport in high school, but many young people benefit from this sport. And Westosha Legacy is the place for a good beginning for girls as young as five, according to Price. “There are four gymnastic events for girls,” he said, “and five for boys. Westosha Legacy is geared toward girls, but

younger boys can get a start here.” There are uneven bars, a high bar, a horse (pummel) and balance beam. There is plenty of space for many tumblers and numerous trampolines for drills. Future plans include The Ninja Zone, adult fitness and mixed martial arts. And the facility can be rented for birthday parties.

Honored for heroism Local girl, 12, helped save her father’s life

By Jason Arndt STAFF WRITER

Within the confines of Salem (Wis.) Grade School, Katelyn Hannah is an honor student who mentors younger children, and enjoys activities like most 12-year-old girls. But on a fateful day in November, Hannah was hailed a hero, helping save the life of her father who suffered a household accident. To recognize her efforts, the Girl Scout Cadette received The Girl Scouts of the USA Lifesaving Medal of Honor Award. The award ceremony was held at Camp Pottawatomie Hills in East Troy, Wis., on Aug. 9. The award is a rare occurrence, according to Chief Executive Officer Christy Brown of Girl Scouts Wisconsin Southeast, who delivered the presentation before hundreds of girl scouts and Hannah’s family members. “This year, only 22 Girl Scouts had received this award, so it is a very prestigious award,” said Brown, adding there are more than 2 million scouts nationwide. “It is earned by a member who has saved or have attempted to save someone’s life and they have done this in a way that is beyond their training, or beyond their age,”

Brown stated. Katelyn’s award stemmed from an accident last November, when she and her family were cleaning their garage, and upon completion of the project, her father went to the attic to determine the cause of a roof leak while she went to the living room. In the living room, Katelyn heard a loud crash coming from the porch, immediately went to the area and discovered her father fell through the attic and landed on a concrete floor. Chris Hannah was bleeding from the head and not responding to verbal cues. Katelyn asked her 9-year-old brother, Alexander, to alert their mother, Tracy, and called 911. On the phone with the dispatcher, Katelyn relayed information from Tracy, as paramedics arrived. Katelyn, who knew paramedics would arrive, then ushered her three siblings to a neighbor’s house to shield them from their father’s injuries. Her other two siblings are Emmalyn, 7, and Madelyn, 5. Chris Hannah spent a week in the intensive care unit as he was treated for a punctured lung, head lacerations, 11 broken ribs and a broken collar-

bone. Today, Chris reports a substantial improvement and credits his daughter. “I am a lot better, I won’t be 100 percent healed, but I am pretty much back to my normal routine,” said Chris, who does not recall much from the November accident. “From what I heard, I was highly impressed by her actions,” he said. “She helped out with my wife in getting towels for my head, she helped out with the kids because it was traumatic for the younger children.” Katelyn’s response drew praise from Brown, who noted her maturity and calm demeanor in a stressful situation, another of the qualifications for the award. “It is about being resourceful, about being skilled and about being competent and having the presence of mind to be of service to others,” Brown said. Future Leader Katelyn’s response did not come as a surprise to her parents, who noted the incoming eighth-grader has taken on leadership roles in the community, including involvement in the Bristol Challenge 4-H Club. “She has always been a

natural. She is a very caring and compassionate person,” Tracy said. “And I think all of her training that she has gotten through the years, a lot of it is with Girl Scouts and 4-H, prepared her for it.” Through several projects with both programs, she volunteered her time at Sharing Center in Trevor and Salem Community Library, mentoring younger children during the summer. Tracy states her daughter’s role at the library has been remarkable.

“They did not have to turn any of the kids away from summer programs,” Tracy said. Like the stressful situation in November, Katelyn had the same calm approach when accepting the award, staying modest, but eventually cracked a wide smile. “I am just a very calm person about certain things and I keep going, telling myself ‘It’s going to be OK,’” Katelyn said. Chris Hannah knows what she is capable of, and it

reinforces his belief. “I was very proud of her, I was not surprised, she has been a natural born leader for years,” Chris said. “She has always exemplified being calm in tough situations.” However, while she has exemplified leadership, Katelyn Hannah has hobbies similar to her peers. “I really enjoy doing crafts and doing things outdoors,” said Katelyn, adding her favorite animal is the chicken.

Slices of life

Stuck between he and mini-he They are the same person, in two different-sized bodies, born a generation apart. They might have been twins, had they not been father and son. They are my husband and our youngest. They share similar personalities as well as a sharp sense of humor, affection for storytelling, tendency for voicing strong opinions, a love of debate and an unwillingness to back down from a disagreement (especially with each other). They are information gatherers, knowledge sponges, trivia fact hunting hounds and conspiracy theorists. Now that our nest is thinning, I find myself spending more time with just the two of them – an introvert sandwiched between two extroverts. Heaven help me. This weekend, we did a little yard work. There were a number of branches littering the sidewalk in front of the house and my husband called upon our boys to help pick them up. It was a reasonable request. The two older boys went to work. My husband and youngest son proceeded to bicker – about anything and everything one can find to bicker about related to sticks on the sidewalk. They disagreed on stick gathering technique and how many sticks should be gathered in one armload. Whether gloves were a necessity or hindrance. About the proper way to transport

sticks and the best place to put the sticks after they were removed from the sidewalk. Whether the sticks would make good kindling. Where the sticks came from. If a stick fell on the sidewalk and no one was around, would it make a sound? And so on. So many sticks so little time. I heard their banter from my crouched position in the garden (pulling weeds) and tried not to listen. As far as I was concerned, nothing (NOTHING) they said had any depth of meaning. Still, neither would give in to the other’s suggestions and/or arguments. This happens all the time. Sometimes I think they’ll drive me bonkers. Sometimes I think they already have. I plead with them to stop. But they enjoy themselves too much to heed my requests. Simply put, their bickering is a game they love to play and to which I’m not privy to the rules or enjoyment factor. On other days, the situation is completely the opposite. They are the best of buds with the same viewpoints and expressions and opinions on everything from fantasy football draft picks to the best fast food French fries to the

fundamentals of politics. They feed off each other’s energy no matter what the topic. They were born with curious minds and fire off questions like they are conducting an interrogation. My son throws out question after question and my husband delights in providing the answers at breakneck speed. All the verbalizations floating in the air only serve to make me feel unsettled and unable to focus. When my son attempts to grill me in such a manner (and he does), I can’t keep up. “One question at a time,” I say. “Mom needs to think.” My husband and son are peas in a pod or dueling banjos – depending on the day. They debate and dispute and discuss and deliberate and I’m not sure which of them enjoys himself more. As for me, I’m like the creamy center of an Oreo – stuck in the middle playing either the role of odd mom out or referee. It can be dizzying, but despite my complaints, I’m sandwiched between two of my favorite cookies. I’ve got my own double stuff, and it’s pretty sweet. Work turns to play for climbing couple By Vicky Wedig STAFF WRITER

Customers of Peter Jenkins’ treetrimming business thought the Atlanta man looked like he was having fun doing his job 33 years ago. “His customers were seeing him having a good time up in the tree tops and said, ‘Why don’t you teach me how to climb?’” said Jenkins’ wife, Patty Jenkins. The suggestion prompted Peter Jenkins to begin Tree Climbers International in Georgia in 1983. Patty Jenkins said the founding of the organization marked the birth of recreational tree climbing, and the couple has been training and hosting climbers since. She said Peter Jenkins was a rock climber turned tree climber for work and now, at 68 years old, inspects trees as an International Society of Arboriculture-certified arborist. Patty Jenkins said tree-climbing requires some skill, and participants must be trained to use the equipment safely, but, mostly, she said, it’s purely about enjoyment and connecting with nature. “They do it for fun,” she said. “Some corporate groups do it for team building, but the kids do it just for fun. Peter Jenkins trains tree workers and trains members of Tree Climbers International from around the world who want to open their own recreational tree-climbing businesses.

“We are the go-to for tree-climbing,” Patty Jenkins said. “We wrote the standards.” The couple operates a tree-climbing club in Atlanta, and Peter Jenkins continues to climb trees for fun. “I have a picture of Peter hanging from two giant sequoias at 350 feet” – 33 feet shy of the tallest coastal redwood, Patty Jenkins said. “These are gorgeous trees.” But any type of tree will do for climbing if it will accommodate the equipment needed to climb safety, she said. Some people go up into the tree and find a branch where they can sit and read a book and others walk around on the branches, Patty Jenkins said. Climbing requires lots of ropes, a saddle, a helmet and a carabiner – a metal clip that connects the saddle to the rope. “This is safer than walking across the street,” Jenkins said. “Anyone who uses the TCI method of climbing, among the hundreds of thousands, at this point, of people around the world … there’s never been an accident.” She said facilitators should know how to properly train people to use the equipment. “People have to know how to put a rope into a tree, tie the knots, make sure everything is good before they go up,” Jenkins said. “They have to learn all the safety methods and do this properly.” Photos and videos can be found at treeclimbing.com.

reminded her that our name is The Time is Now to Help. For the first time, I saw a smile on her face as she said, “It certainly is.” Two weeks later, I called the sister to see how her move had gone. She shared her car had been very reliable and safely transported her and her belongings across the country. She said, “Thank God you had replaced my tires. I ran into many heavy rainstorms on my journey but my car handled the rain and the mountains just fine. I would never have made it without your help.” I asked about her brother, and the woman told me how he was struggling with the chemotherapy. She told me about some of the alternative therapies they were using, and it was incredible how much they were helping him achieve a better quality of life. With our help with rent

and utilities and the sister’s help going forward, the brother would now be able to afford some of these therapies. He also was able to eat some of the healthy food the sister prepared for him. The sister told me how they spent time every day praying and meditating. She also drove him to his daily treatments and to some group therapies she had encouraged him to join. The sister said, “The change in my brother is huge. He has gone from wanting to die to now feeling he has a chance to beat this. Thank you and your donors for making this even possible. You are incredible.” I agree, you are incredible. Thank you for removing the stress of poverty that hung over this man and made him lose his will to live. Secure shelter and utilities have restored this man’s hope for the future. It has rekindled his belief in a cure and in the kindness of others. conversation, I could hear the fatigue in the brother’s voice. It had been a tiring conversation reviewing all his expenses and past history. Both the sister and I said our goodbyes after many repeated “thank yous” from the brother to all of you. I put together a plan and timeline for the sister to get on the road as soon as possible. With our help, the sister could be on the road sooner and could leave before the sale of her townhome was complete. The car was scheduled for service and rather than selling some of her belongings or paying to transport them, she was going to donate them to another family in need. This left just her personal belongings and household necessities that could all fit in her car. The sister was incredulous over how quickly I put things together for her departure. I
