JUDE KAIDER Hi-Liter
A quartet of 10-year-old cheerleaders (from left) Sydney Osgood, Faith Francke, Jazzy Fisher, and Olivia Moisa let out a cheer as items are unloaded in preparation for the fourth The Antioch Traveling Closet at the Antioch Senior Center, 817 Holbek Dr., on Saturday. Coach Dave Moisa arranged for the cheerleaders along with 19 members of his Pac 10 Middleweight Antioch Viking football team, and many other volunteers to assist in the loading and unloading of the Piggly Wiggly truck that was filled with boxes of clothing, shoes, and personal hygiene products. The distribution event was held on Sunday. A line, eventually 50 strong, began to form at 9:45, almost two hours prior to the scheduled opening. In addition to the clothing and toiletries, five professional hairdressers were on hand to cut hair for no charge. Lisa Fisher, who conceived and organizes the charity event has put out a request to anyone with storage space available to assist in her keeping items safe for the next time the Traveling Closet visits. Police arrest teen for threats against school
A 19-year-old Franklin Park man, who was apparently upset over a recent breakup with his girlfriend, is accused of threatening to carry out a violent attack at Antioch Community High School last week, according to local police. At approximately 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 16, the Antioch Police Department was alerted by the parents of a Community High School student of threats made to carry out a violent attack at the school, Antioch Police said in a news release. Officers learned the student had received multiple threats by text messaging from an ex-boyfriend, who made direct threats against students of the high school. According to police, the investigation revealed the threats stemmed from the suspect being upset over a recent breakup with the student. Through an overnight investigation, the suspect was identified as Nicholas Stevens, of the 2700 block of Elder Lane in Franklin Park. At approximately 1 a.m. Stevens was taken into custody at his home, and he was taken to the Antioch Police Department where he was charged with the following: • Harassment through elec-
tronic communication, a Class 4 felony; • Disorderly conduct, transmitting a threat of destruction or threats of vioNicholas lence against Stevens persons at a school, a Class 4 felony. In Illinois a Class 4 felony is punishable by up to three years in prison for each offense, and up to a $25,000 fine. Police said they were engaged in regular communication with Community High School District administration during the investigation and will continue to work together to ensure the safety of students and staff. “It has been determined that there is currently no risk to the school stemming from this event, and parents, students, and staff can feel comfortable carrying on daily academic routines at the school,” the news release stated. Stevens appeared in Lake County Court last week for a bond hearing, where the judge remanded him to the Lake County Jail with his bond set at $50,000.
